All right, good morning, everyone. As Steve said, my name is Kyle. I'm the student pastor here at Grace. And before I get started, not for nothing, when Aaron announced that we're starting kids back, your woos were very weak. So, I mean, I was just like, just sitting and just listening to a lot of weak woos. So you owe Aaron a much more hearty woo after the service is over. That's all I have to say. But I'm thrilled to be able to be up here this morning. I'm thrilled to be able to go through James as we are doing so as a church. I'm thankful to Nate who, you know, since I'm the student pastor, kind of tossed up the softball of being able to have the opportunity to talk about taming the tongue. I mean, certainly a very easy thing to be discussing and going through. Obviously, I'm kidding. But that's kind of as is the way of James. This morning, we're going to be going through James 3, mostly focusing on verses 3 through 8. If you have your Bible or if there's a Bible in front of you, I would love for you to grab that. I would love for you to go ahead and open up to that section as that is where we are going to be parked for this morning. As the video talked about last weekend that we watched in our introduction to James, the Bible Project put it as, James is a beautifully crafted punch to the gut. And I hate to tell you, but this is certainly no different. As we get into this, it's going to be pretty overwhelming to read, but I think we're going to get through it. So hopefully we can get through it together. Let me see some thumbs up. Yeah, good, good. Glad to hear it. Glad to hear you're with me. Let's go ahead and jump in. We're going to start with verse 3. Go all the way through verse 8 of James chapter 3. When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one's life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. So I'm just going to let us all take a quick collective breath as we just read all of those verses together. That is certainly strong language. Those are certainly incredibly powerful images basically saying that the tongue is like the small bit inside of a horse that steers the horse and makes it turn anywhere you want it to go. That it's the rudder, the tiny rudder on a ship that regardless of wind, regardless of sea, you can change the direction of an entire ship with this small rudder. It's like a small spark that creates a giant forest fire that it can corrupt every part of us and it can corrupt anyone else who's around to get burned. And it's funny because these are beautiful illustrations, but they're pretty heightened. They're pretty strong, but as I read them, and the first time that I read through this, my response wasn't, man, James is wilding out right now. My response was, yes, certainly this is a lot, but I don't see any hyperbole here. As I read that, I kind of just shrugged, nodded my head and said, yeah, he's right. The tongue has immense and incredible power to do evil. I imagine that you guys probably feel the same way as I just got done reading and as you just got done reading along with me. I bet that none of you were like, okay, that seems a little bit intense. I can almost guarantee you everyone in here fully agrees with everything he just said. Why? Because we've experienced it. We've experienced someone using just a few words to completely light us on fire. We've experienced being completely broken down to our core because of a simple phrase uttered to us. Even more of a bummer, we know we've done it to other people. That in a moment of frustration, in a moment of a lack of willpower, whatever it may be, we slip up, we say something that you probably have those things that ring back in your mind right now that you still regret that you said five years ago. The author William Barclay, who wrote a commentary on James, puts it this way. He says, Once again, that's a big and that's a bold claim, but I don't see any lies there. The sin that comes out of our mouth is something that can have dire consequences, not only in that moment, but for years to come. And as he starts it, and as I think is so beautifully put, there is no sin into which is easier to fall, right? Because when we're wronged, when we're angry, when we're upset, when something happens to us, we want, and so often our knee-jerk reaction is to respond. Setting ablaze a large fire by a small spark. So what do we do? I mean, with how heightened this language, with how heightened this diction is, it feels like the only thing that we could possibly do is just stop talking altogether, right? The classic, if my tongue causes me to sin, let me cut it off. And I'm going to walk over here, as Nate has taught me, I'm going to go over here to say that while this is certainly not the purpose and the point of what I'm talking about, I do believe and I do think that there is very distinct and very clear merit and wisdom that comes from all human beings, but especially believers, knowing when to respond in silence, when to simply be quiet, when to simply hold their tongue and respond in listening as opposed to responding with being the first to say something. I don't say that to put you guys on blast. I say that to put myself on blast. If you look around and find anyone who I've ever been in a small group with or who's ever sat in a staff meeting with me, you will see emphatic nodding because Kyle is at the top of that list of people slash believers who needs to learn sometimes how to just be quiet. Thank you for that amen in the back. I love being made to feel great by my fellow staff members. But obviously we can't do that, right? Obviously we can't stop talking, we can't just cut out our tongues because that would hurt. But obvious issues of practicality aside, there's other issues with that. There's other issues with simply stopping and abstaining from talking. The main one is that the tongue's immense power isn't limited to evil, but also to do substantial good. Paul reminds us of this in Ephesians 4.29 as he writes, What Paul encourages us to do here and is all through Scripture. Every writer and the Lord himself and Jesus, they are encouraging us not simply to give up our evil discussions and our evil talking, but instead to replace those with good. Instead to replace those with speaking life and speaking love and speaking encouragement to any and every one of us around, and that doesn't happen if we just stop talking. The same commentator, William Barclay, puts it this way. He says, I'll say that again. Abstention from anything is never a complete substitute for control in its use. Simply abstaining from speaking isn't enough. The goal is not to be quiet. The goal is to be able to control the things that come out of our mouth so that not only are we getting rid of the evil that comes out of our mouths, but we are replacing it with good and with love and with all great things. So the question obviously is how? Because I know, I'm 100% certain that every person in this room, every person watching at home, every person wherever you are, has done just as I've tried to do in trying to do it, in trying to tame the tongue, in trying my very hardest to hold back the things that I'm feeling and instead to change those and to still show love to people, still encouraging people even when I don't want to. Trying my best to speak humility even though I feel a sense of arrogance or ego. Trying my best to live by the old saying of if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. But what happens? We try to be silent or we try to replace our speech. We try to replace and hold back how we actually feel to instead be uplifting and encouraging, instead being loving. And that just builds up and it erodes our insides, it erodes our heart. And then at some point, whether it be the person who's actually causing you anger and frustration, or whether it just be the first person to look at you wrong that you just blow up on, right? Small words, huge fires. So what do we do? James in verse 8 literally says, no human being can tame the tongue. It would be incredibly unwise for me to stand up here and try to argue to you guys that he's wrong. It'd be unwise for me to say, yeah, you're the half-brother of Jesus, you wrote James, which is in the Bible, but I think, you know, like, I'm Kyle, I know more. But, what I will argue is I think that this statement, this claim that he makes is a bit more nuanced than how it sounds by simply reading it once. Growing up, if me, if myself, my brother, and my dad were all riding together in my dad's car, we were almost always listening to one of two cassette tapes. The first, License to Ill by the Beastie Boys. I think it probably won't surprise you that that's not the one that we're going to focus on this morning. We can talk about that afterwards. I'll pass you the mic and you can show me what you got. The other, probably the exact opposite, I guess, was this old sermon from 1995 by this pastor named Tony Evans that he gave at some men's conference. I'm sure anyone who's sitting here listening to me run my mouth, especially if you've never heard a sermon before today or like why in the world would anyone ever want to re-listen to a sermon? But I can assure you that this is a sermon to be listened to. This is a sermon to get excited about. Tony Evans has a way with illustrations and a way with both telling stories and connecting stories to this greater and larger point that I think is unparalleled and unmatched. This sermon is as entertaining as it is powerful. And as a three-year-old child, I'm sitting in this car just quoting along with Tony Evans this sermon. I'm hyping it up a lot. Reach out to me and I'll send it to you because I promise you I will not do this justice. But as I went through this and as I was preparing, I kept coming back to this story that Tony Evans opens his sermon by telling. The story starts off by him having a problem in his bedroom because he's got a crack in the wall of his bedroom. Can I get an aww? Yeah, that's a bummer, right? But hey, you know, easy fix. He reaches out to a painter. The painter comes. He says, my man, I've got a crack in the bedroom. Can you fix it? He said, yeah, of course. He does what he does to fix a crack in the wall. He replasters it. He paints it. It's all good. Beautiful wall. Zero cracks available. Everything's great. Pays him along the way. A month later, guess who's back? The crack. The crack is back. And so as he so eloquently puts it, somewhat evangelically ticked off, he calls the painter back. He says, sir, the crack is back. Can you please come fix it? So he apologizes. I'm sorry. I'll come and fix it. He goes, does his thing, replasters, paints it. Good to go. Month and a half goes by and the crack reappears. As he says, this time, this crack that is in the wall has been visited by all of its nieces and nephews. There are now a family of cracks living on his walls. So out of frustration, he goes, okay, clearly this painter has no clue what he's doing. Let me get another one. Calls another one. He's like, I've got cracks in my walls. Can you please come and fix it? The guy comes. He takes a look at the wall. He looks at him. He says, I can't help you. And he's like, sir, what do you mean you can't help me? You're a painter. He goes, yeah, but the problem is you don't have a problem with cracks in your wall. And to which Tony replies, to which Tony looks up quietly at the cracks in his walls. And as he says, he looks back at the crack standing in front of him, telling him he doesn't have a problem with cracks in his walls. And he says, sir, you see cracks. I see cracks. All God's children see cracks. How are you going to tell me I don't have a problem with cracks on my walls? And he says, I can fix this. I can replaster your wall. I can make it to where you don't have any cracks on your wall, but the problem is not with your walls. The problem is not with cracks. The problem is you have a shifting foundation. And until you fix your foundation, you will always be fixing cracks in your walls. Until you fix your foundation, you will always be fixing cracks in your walls. When it comes to our tongue, we try so hard. We try to edit our language. We try to replace how we feel with what we say. We try so hard to bury all of that down so that we can be as kind and as godly as possible when we have interactions and when we have conversations. We hold back our actual thoughts and our feelings. But the problem is that we don't have a problem with our tongue. And when we think we do, it's never going to be eradicated. You see, taming the tongue has nothing to do with the tongue. The tongue is simply a vehicle for the heart to speak. We attempt to tame our tongue through our own willpower and we focus so much on what comes out. We focus on the outside. We focus on the words that leave our mouths when our foundation, our hearts, are corrupted. If our hearts are harboring ill will, if they're harboring hatred, helplessness, negativity, arrogance, impatience, curses, and or doubts, we don't have a willpower that is strong enough to prevent the tongue from slipping up and expressing these things. If that evil rests inside of our hearts, at some point it's going to make its way out of our mouths. And until our hearts begin to reflect God's heart, we will never be able to control our tongues. And so the goal becomes our hearts. We have to fix our hearts or we can never fix our tongues. Taming the tongue is no longer about our speech. It's not about changing your speech. It's about allowing God to change our hearts. It's about allowing God to mold our hearts. It's about allowing Christ to come and to shape our hearts into what it should be. We give our hearts to Christ. We learn, we realize, and we continue to grow in our joyful understanding of the fact that God created every one of us. And even though we sin, even though we deserve hell, we deserve eternity in hell, God sends his perfect son to live and then to die in our place. All so that we can live forever with him in a relationship with him, our hearts are changed. And as our hearts are changed, they continue to be molded as we realize that this gospel truth that God created us, that God sent his son to die for me. That same gospel truth is also true of literally every single person you will ever make contact with. In the same way God created you, in the same way God loves you, in the same way that Christ died for you, he also did all of those things for every single person you will ever interact with. And when we start to look at people that way, as God's children, as our hearts are being molded into seeing people the way that God sees them, our tongues are going to respond in kind. No pun intended, because I think our tongues are going to also respond with much more kindness. And as we continue to read through the Gospels and read through Jesus's life and with the memory and with the knowledge that Jesus not only died for us, but he lived on earth to give us a measure of this is what it should look like for you to live. This is how you glorify God through your language. This is how you glorify God with the way that you see and the way that you treat people with the openness and with the grace that you show people and the love that you show each and every person. And our goal becomes just trying to be more Christ-like. And that starts at the heart. And it all culminates with constant prayer. As Nate talked about, what, two or three weeks ago, that we continue to keep God at the center of our hearts and we continue to think through and pray with him and have him on our minds, meditating in scripture and meditating in prayer so that God is always at the forefront because if God is at the forefront of our hearts and if he is at the forefront of our minds, I think it means we are going to speak differently. And when we allow God to change and to mold and to shape our hearts in this way, we are able to replace both in our hearts and in our speech, ill will and hatred with love, helplessness with hope, negativity with positivity, arrogance with humility, impatience with patience, curses with blessings, and doubt with faith. And most importantly, when our hearts have been transformed by the gospel of Christ, our tongues have no choice but to rejoice and to proclaim that gospel. Will you pray with me? Lord, I pray that as we try to glorify you in our words, in our actions, as we try to glorify you through our prayers to you, but God, also our words and our prayers, our words and just the way that we interact with any and everyone. The way we talk to people, the way that we talk about people, the way that we talk about ourselves. Lord, I pray that we put aside and we stop worrying about and we stop trying to fix our tongues by simply our own power and our own willpower because, God, we know it's never going to work. God, instead, allow us to come to you. Allow your heart to shape, mold, impact our hearts, God. Allow our hearts to look more like yours so that our speech can do the same. We love you. Amen.

In the same way God created you, in the same way God loves you, in the same way that Christ died for you, he also did all of those things for every single person you will ever interact with. And when we start to look at people that way, as God's children, as our hearts are being molded into seeing people the way that God sees them, our tongues are going to respond in kind. No pun intended, because I think our tongues are going to also respond with much more kindness. And as we continue to read through the Gospels and read through Jesus's life and with the memory and with the knowledge that Jesus not only died for us, but he lived on earth to give us a measure of this is what it should look like for you to live. This is how you glorify God through your language. This is how you glorify God with the way that you see and the way that you treat people with the openness and with the grace that you show people and the love that you show each and every person. And our goal becomes just trying to be more Christ-like. And that starts at the heart. And it all culminates with constant prayer. As Nate talked about, what, two or three weeks ago, that we continue to keep God at the center of our hearts and we continue to think through and pray with him and have him on our minds, meditating in scripture and meditating in prayer so that God is always at the forefront because if God is at the forefront of our hearts and if he is at the forefront of our minds, I think it means we are going to speak differently. And when we allow God to change and to mold and to shape our hearts in this way, we are able to replace both in our hearts and in our speech, ill will and hatred with love, helplessness with hope, negativity with positivity, arrogance with humility, impatience with patience, curses with blessings, and doubt with faith. And most importantly, when our hearts have been transformed by the gospel of Christ, our tongues have no choice but to rejoice and to proclaim that gospel. Will you pray with me? Lord, I pray that as we try to glorify you in our words, in our actions, as we try to glorify you through our prayers to you, but God, also our words and our prayers, our words and just the way that we interact with any and everyone. The way we talk to people, the way that we talk about people, the way that we talk about ourselves. Lord, I pray that we put aside and we stop worrying about and we stop trying to fix our tongues by simply our own power and our own willpower because, God, we know it's never going to work. God, instead, allow us to come to you. Allow your heart to shape, mold, impact our hearts, God. Allow our hearts to look more like yours so that our speech can do the same. We love you. Amen.
Good morning. My name is Nate. I get to be one of the pastors here. If I haven't gotten a chance to meet you, I'd love to do that. As I always say on holiday weekends, and just want to reiterate for you, God does love you more because you're here in church, especially in the rain. He loves you double today. So good job. If you're watching online from your beach house or wherever, He does not love you the same as he loves the people here. I'm sorry. That's just how it goes. It's in the Bible somewhere. This is the last part in our series called Big Emotions, where we've been looking at blow ups and blow outs in the Bible and learning how God responds to the emotions of his children, learning how God would have us manage and navigate some of our bigger emotions. And as we wrap up the series, I thought it would be appropriate to focus on the big emotions of God, on one of God's biggest emotions. And it's interesting to me that God is the one that tells us this about himself. A lot of the descriptions of God in the Bible are people, the authors of the Bible, telling us who they understand God to be, how they've experienced God. But it's not very often in scripture that God comes out and is interested in describing himself to us and telling us more about him and even especially ascribing emotions to himself. And if I were to ask you, how does God feel about you? What's the first way that he says he feels about you in the Bible? I would be willing to bet, now some of you know, but I would be willing to bet that jealousy is not what you would say first. You probably do know that God is a jealous God. I'm sure you've heard that. But it's interesting to me that God, who holds back so much in describing himself and allows us to kind of pursue him and learn who he is through experience and through others, that it's important to him to come out of the gates and say, I am a jealous God. He says this in Exodus chapter 20, verses 3 through 5. This is what things, but he describes himself as a God. Now he goes on from there and talks about more things, but he describes himself to us as a jealous God. He is, and what he's jealous of is you. He's jealous of your affection, your attention, your devotion. He wants you to be focused on him. God knows that we all wake up in the morning thinking about something. There's something that's driving us. There's something that we want to pursue, and God wants to be the thing that we wake up thinking about. He wants to be the last thing we think about when we put our head on the pillow at night. God is jealous of our affection and devotion. This is interesting to me, not only because it's kind of the attribute that God leads with as he introduces himself to us at the beginning of the story, but it also kind of flies in the face of everything else that the Bible has to say about jealousy. There's a lot of passages about envy and jealousy in the Bible. God typically does not shed a positive light on that. We're not pro-jealousy. We don't raise our children to be jealous. The exact opposite. And so there's a lot of passages that I could go to to say, hey, this is pretty much what the Bible has to say about jealousy. But I found the one that synopsizes it the best for me is in James tells us, there will be disorder and every vile practice, all the corruption, all the greed, all the selfishness, wherever it exists. And yet it exists in God. So how can these things be true? How can we marry God describing himself as a jealous God for us? And also that where jealousy exists, so does every vile practice. Those two things don't seem to line up. And as I thought about it, and thought about what jealousy is, jealousy is wanting someone's attention or devotion for yourself. And it's acknowledging that when we are jealous of something, we place desire on that thing. What occurred to me with the nature of jealousy and why it's good for God to be jealous and it's bad for us to be jealous of other things besides God, is that God's jealousy is rooted in what he wants for you, not from you. God's jealousy for you is rooted in what he wants to see come about for you, not what he wants to get from you. And when we think about the things that we are jealous of, when we think about the things that we give our affection to, we are hoping to get something from them, right? When we pour ourselves into a person, we want that affirmation to come back to us. When we pour ourselves into career, we want the things that come along with that to come back to us. I saw it very clearly this week. The early part of the week, I had an opportunity to go down to Miami and stay in a resort on South Beach, which is, that's where I belong. I mean, that makes sense. I got a great body for that. I got, you know, the $20 Casio watch. I fit right in down there. I was definitely the country mouse. I got a buddy that I didn't just decide to go to Miami. Like, you know what I'm going to do? I'm going to go to a resort. I got a buddy that travels for work, and sometimes the company that uses him puts him up in the La Quinta, and other times they put him up at the nicest resort on South Beach and he gets a suite and he says, dude, you should come with me. And I'm like, all right, I'll go free Miami. So I go. And I don't know. Last time I was in Miami was 20 years ago. My grandparents lived down there and it was Boca Raton. I didn't see Miami. But now, I've seen Miami. And that's a whole scene. I don't need to go back to Miami. But as I'm down there, I'm thinking about this sermon, and the things that we're jealous for, and God's jealousy for us. And I'm just looking at this world down there that's different than Raleigh. And thinking about how easy it would be to get caught up in what that place is selling. How easy it would be to live there, to visit there, to look around, to see the yachts in the harbor. And they go, I want one of those. To see the nice watches, the nice jewelry, the beauty, the success, the wealth, the power, the affluence. It costs $300 to rent a circular bed for a day on the edge of the pool. And people paid it. And then they just sat there all day long. That's just dumb money. That's just, hey, look, everybody, I got money. I'm spending it on a lawn chair for the day. A cabana was $3,000. It would be easy to look at that stuff and to say, I want that. And to give that our attention and our affection and our devotion. And to begin to build our life around the inquirement of those things. And now here in Raleigh, in our lives, it's not as in your face. It's not as overt. But suddenly those forces still play on all of us, don't they? We get out of college, we get a job, people around us get promoted. We want to get promoted, so we put our head down and we work hard for that. We get a little older, our friends start getting nicer cars, we want nicer cars. Our friends start taking nicer vacations, we want nicer vacations. Oh, dude bought a lake house? I want a lake house. And we just start to work for it. Or we want someone who's beautiful to tell us that we are. We want someone that we're attracted to to tell us that we are attractive. Or we pour ourselves into learning or into knowledge or into whatever it might be, but we give our affection and our devotion to the things of this world. And we give it to them because of what we want it to do for us. We pour ourselves, we idolize this relationship because this relationship makes me feel secure and whole. So we pour ourselves into it. We pour ourselves into career because from career, I get status, I get power, I get wealth, I get a sense of accomplishment. I get whatever I get. We pour ourselves into family because our family growing up let us down and I don't want to do that for my kids, and so it's my idol. I'm just going to pour myself into being the best parent that I can possibly be at the sake of everything else. And all of those things are, for the most part, good desires and have their place. But when we're jealous for those things, for what the world has to offer us, our affection and devotion is misplaced. See, we give things our affection hoping that they will satisfy our souls. That's why we do it. The things we think about when we wake up in the morning, the next thing on the horizon that we want to accomplish, the way we spend our money and our time, we pour ourselves into those things hoping that they will satisfy our souls. And the thing is, they never do. They never do. It's this empty black hole tunnel that we can pour all we want into it, and our souls will never be truly satisfied. They will always be restless. They will always be wanting. They will always crave more and drive us further. And this gets to, for me, the heart of what it must feel like for God to be jealous for us. I picture it like this, and this is why I say God is jealous for us because of what he wants for us. I'm not thinking of anyone in particular. This is a total hypothetical situation. I do not have a story to go with this, but I was thinking this week trying to understand the jealousy of God as he watches us give our attention and affection to things other than him. I was thinking about a 16, 17-year-old girl and her parents watching that life. And let's assume that she's pretty and that she's charming and that she's smart and that she's capable and that she's ambitious and she's got the world at her fingertips, right? But when she's 16, 17 years old, she meets a boy. And she makes that boy her world. And she wakes up thinking about him and she goes to bed thinking about him. And she begins to make her choices around her affection for this boy and her desire to feel affection from him. The way that she dresses, The color of her hair. Maybe the classes that she chooses in school. What she chooses to be involved with after school. Whether or not she engages in this or that extracurricular or works at this or that place. And then maybe her affection for that boy is so great that she allows that to heavily inform her college decision and she doesn't go to the place where she could have gone. How painful must it be for those parents to watch that girl misplace her affection and devotion and so squander her potential on something that essentially does not matter. Dating is fine. I'm not here to criticize it or critique it. But I will say that for the most part, if you're dating in high school, you ain't getting married to that one, okay? So just relax. Just chill out. If you are going to get married to them, they'll still be there in six years. Like, it's not a big deal. I used to teach high school and do student ministry, and I would tell all the kids, whoever you're dating, you're not going to marry. One of you is going to break up with the other one. It's just going to happen. So conduct yourselves accordingly in the relationship. Every now and again, I'm wrong, and high school sweethearts get married, and that's fine, but to watch your daughter with the world at her fingertips, to squander away that potential because of affection for a boy must be a uniquely painful thing. To watch a son who's incredibly capable, who has the world at his fingertips, to squander that potential on a girl or on something else that doesn't matter, that takes his attention off of what he could do and who he could be, has got to be a pretty painful thing for a parent to walk through, to see your hopes and dreams of this child and to see what they're capable of and to watch them squander that on something that doesn't matter and will not return the affection that they need. That's what it must be like for God to watch us fritter our lives away on things that don't matter. That's what it must be like for our Father in Heaven to watch us as we put our head down and just think about career and wealth and money and status. As we make the next God in our life the beach house or the promotion or the job or the company. As we make the God in our life our marriage. shepherd their daughter through the season. I think you would want to ask the question, what is actually worth our primary affection? Mom, dad, where would you have her put her affection and devotion? What do you want her waking up thinking about? School? Class? Job? Building a resume? What do you want her thinking about? And then for us, what is it that we should wake up thinking about? What is it that should be most important to us? I would contend and direct us to the Bible telling us so, that only God can satisfy our souls. If we're to say, what is worthy of that girl's affection and devotion? What is worthy of her life's pursuit? God alone would say, I am. Because in me she will find satisfaction. In me she, she will find affirmation. In me, she will find love. In me, she will find identity. In me, she will find what she needs. I will be enough for her. In God, you will find affection. In God, you will find affirmation. In God, you will finally feel like you are enough. In God, you will finally see your identity and know who you are and what he created you to do and be. In God, you will find the affection that he lavishes on you so that you can lavish it onto others. In God, you will find the love that allows you to be the spouse that you've always wanted to be. In God, you will find the affection that you need to pour out on your kids when they need it the most. In God, we find all we need for all the other things. In God, our restless souls finally find rest. I think that's part of what Jesus was talking about when he says this in Matthew chapter 11. He says, God is jealous for us, for our affection and our devotion because he knows that it is only in him that our restless souls can rest. He knows it is only in him that our greatest needs can be met. So our God is a jealous God, not because of what he wants from you, but because of what he wants for you. And what God wants for you is for your soul to rest. What God wants for you is found in Psalm 1611. At his right hand there are pleasures forevermore. In his presence there is fullness of joy. What God wants for you is John 10.10 that you might have life and have it to the full. What God wants for you is that you would know what love is and it abounds so much that you never have to question yourself or your identity ever again. What God wants for you is for you to be a conduit of his grace and love and affection from him onto others. And so God is jealous for you. When he sees you prioritizing things in your life over and above him, when he knows you're waking up thinking about things that are not things of God, that are not him, that are not in your life because of him. When he knows that you go to bed thinking about things that are not in your life from God, that are not there because of him, he's jealous for you. Not because he's petty and envious and he somehow needs your attention. No, he sees you squandering your affection and devotion on things that cannot satisfy your soul. So he's jealous for you for your sake so that you can be who he created you to be, so that you can experience the love that he created you to experience, and so you can express the love that he created you to express. So when we think of our God and we say that he is a jealous God, it's important to me that we understand that jealousy not to be petty jealousy like we have where we want something from the object of our affection. No, no. It's an altruistic jealousy where he knows he is the only worthy object of your affection and devotion. And when we offer it to him, everything else falls into place. He's jealous for you because he wants you to find rest in him. As we have a day off tomorrow with our families or our friends, I hope that we'll take part of today and part of tomorrow in rest and reflect on what we have been jealous of. Reflect on where we have placed our affection and our devotion. And maybe let's take this holiday weekend to recalibrate and place our affection and devotion back on God and the things of God because he is jealous for us, for our sakes. Let's pray. Father, thank you for being jealous for us. Thank you for wanting what's best for us. I pray, God, that we would see you as the only thing that is worthy of our life's devotion. May our souls find satisfaction and rest in you. May we be encouraged by you. May we feel loved and seen by you. God, I am the most guilty of placing my priorities on other things, of seeing the shiny thing and chasing after it, of waking up and thinking about myriad things, of seeing the shiny thing and chasing after it, of waking up and thinking about myriad things that are not related to my devotion to you. And so, God, I pray for my brothers and sisters who might be like me, that we would recalibrate this weekend, that we would slow down and make you the object of our affection. When he knows that you go to bed thinking about things that are not in your life from God, that are not there because of him, he's jealous for you. Not because he's petty and envious and he somehow needs your attention. No, he sees you squandering your affection and devotion on things that cannot satisfy your soul. So he's jealous for you for your sake so that you can be who he created you to be, so that you can experience the love that he created you to experience, and so you can express the love that he created you to express. So when we think of our God and we say that he is a jealous God, it's important to me that we understand that jealousy not to be petty jealousy like we have where we want something from the object of our affection. No, no. It's an altruistic jealousy where he knows he is the only worthy object of your affection and devotion. And when we offer it to him, everything else falls into place. He's jealous for you because he wants you to find rest in him. As we have a day off tomorrow with our families or our friends, I hope that we'll take part of today and part of tomorrow in rest and reflect on what we have been jealous of. Reflect on where we have placed our affection and our devotion. And maybe let's take this holiday weekend to recalibrate and place our affection and devotion back on God and the things of God because he is jealous for us, for our sakes. Let's pray. Father, thank you for being jealous for us. Thank you for wanting what's best for us. I pray, God, that we would see you as the only thing that is worthy of our life's devotion. May our souls find satisfaction and rest in you. May we be encouraged by you. May we feel loved and seen by you. God, I am the most guilty of placing my priorities on other things, of seeing the shiny thing and chasing after it, of waking up and thinking about myriad things, of seeing the shiny thing and chasing after it, of waking up and thinking about myriad things that are not related to my devotion to you. And so, God, I pray for my brothers and sisters who might be like me, that we would recalibrate this weekend, that we would slow down and make you the object of our affection. As I always say on holiday weekends, and just want to reiterate for you, God does love you more because you're here in church, especially in the rain. He loves you double today. So good job. If you're watching online from your beach house or wherever, He does not love you the same as he loves the people here. I'm sorry. That's just how it goes. It's in the Bible somewhere. This is the last part in our series called Big Emotions, where we've been looking at blow ups and blow outs in the Bible and learning how God responds to the emotions of his children, learning how God would have us manage and navigate some of our bigger emotions. And as we wrap up the series, I thought it would be appropriate to focus on the big emotions of God, on one of God's biggest emotions. And it's interesting to me that God is the one that tells us this about himself. A lot of the descriptions of God in the Bible are people, the authors of the Bible, telling us who they understand God to be, how they've experienced God. But it's not very often in scripture that God comes out and is interested in describing himself to us and telling us more about him and even especially ascribing emotions to himself. And if I were to ask you, how does God feel about you? What's the first way that he says he feels about you in the Bible? I would be willing to bet, now some of you know, but I would be willing to bet that jealousy is not what you would say first. You probably do know that God is a jealous God. I'm sure you've heard that. But it's interesting to me that God, who holds back so much in describing himself and allows us to kind of pursue him and learn who he is through experience and through others, that it's important to him to come out of the gates and say, I am a jealous God. He says this in Exodus chapter 20, verses 3 through 5. This is what things, but he describes himself as a God. Now he goes on from there and talks about more things, but he describes himself to us as a jealous God. He is, and what he's jealous of is you. He's jealous of your affection, your attention, your devotion. He wants you to be focused on him. God knows that we all wake up in the morning thinking about something. There's something that's driving us. There's something that we want to pursue, and God wants to be the thing that we wake up thinking about. He wants to be the last thing we think about when we put our head on the pillow at night. God is jealous of our affection and devotion. This is interesting to me, not only because it's kind of the attribute that God leads with as he introduces himself to us at the beginning of the story, but it also kind of flies in the face of everything else that the Bible has to say about jealousy. There's a lot of passages about envy and jealousy in the Bible. God typically does not shed a positive light on that. We're not pro-jealousy. We don't raise our children to be jealous. The exact opposite. And so there's a lot of passages that I could go to to say, hey, this is pretty much what the Bible has to say about jealousy. But I found the one that synopsizes it the best for me is in James tells us, there will be disorder and every vile practice, all the corruption, all the greed, all the selfishness, wherever it exists. And yet it exists in God. So how can these things be true? How can we marry God describing himself as a jealous God for us? And also that where jealousy exists, so does every vile practice. Those two things don't seem to line up. And as I thought about it, and thought about what jealousy is, jealousy is wanting someone's attention or devotion for yourself. And it's acknowledging that when we are jealous of something, we place desire on that thing. What occurred to me with the nature of jealousy and why it's good for God to be jealous and it's bad for us to be jealous of other things besides God, is that God's jealousy is rooted in what he wants for you, not from you. God's jealousy for you is rooted in what he wants to see come about for you, not what he wants to get from you. And when we think about the things that we are jealous of, when we think about the things that we give our affection to, we are hoping to get something from them, right? When we pour ourselves into a person, we want that affirmation to come back to us. When we pour ourselves into career, we want the things that come along with that to come back to us. I saw it very clearly this week. The early part of the week, I had an opportunity to go down to Miami and stay in a resort on South Beach, which is, that's where I belong. I mean, that makes sense. I got a great body for that. I got, you know, the $20 Casio watch. I fit right in down there. I was definitely the country mouse. I got a buddy that I didn't just decide to go to Miami. Like, you know what I'm going to do? I'm going to go to a resort. I got a buddy that travels for work, and sometimes the company that uses him puts him up in the La Quinta, and other times they put him up at the nicest resort on South Beach and he gets a suite and he says, dude, you should come with me. And I'm like, all right, I'll go free Miami. So I go. And I don't know. Last time I was in Miami was 20 years ago. My grandparents lived down there and it was Boca Raton. I didn't see Miami. But now, I've seen Miami. And that's a whole scene. I don't need to go back to Miami. But as I'm down there, I'm thinking about this sermon, and the things that we're jealous for, and God's jealousy for us. And I'm just looking at this world down there that's different than Raleigh. And thinking about how easy it would be to get caught up in what that place is selling. How easy it would be to live there, to visit there, to look around, to see the yachts in the harbor. And they go, I want one of those. To see the nice watches, the nice jewelry, the beauty, the success, the wealth, the power, the affluence. It costs $300 to rent a circular bed for a day on the edge of the pool. And people paid it. And then they just sat there all day long. That's just dumb money. That's just, hey, look, everybody, I got money. I'm spending it on a lawn chair for the day. A cabana was $3,000. It would be easy to look at that stuff and to say, I want that. And to give that our attention and our affection and our devotion. And to begin to build our life around the inquirement of those things. And now here in Raleigh, in our lives, it's not as in your face. It's not as overt. But suddenly those forces still play on all of us, don't they? We get out of college, we get a job, people around us get promoted. We want to get promoted, so we put our head down and we work hard for that. We get a little older, our friends start getting nicer cars, we want nicer cars. Our friends start taking nicer vacations, we want nicer vacations. Oh, dude bought a lake house? I want a lake house. And we just start to work for it. Or we want someone who's beautiful to tell us that we are. We want someone that we're attracted to to tell us that we are attractive. Or we pour ourselves into learning or into knowledge or into whatever it might be, but we give our affection and our devotion to the things of this world. And we give it to them because of what we want it to do for us. We pour ourselves, we idolize this relationship because this relationship makes me feel secure and whole. So we pour ourselves into it. We pour ourselves into career because from career, I get status, I get power, I get wealth, I get a sense of accomplishment. I get whatever I get. We pour ourselves into family because our family growing up let us down and I don't want to do that for my kids, and so it's my idol. I'm just going to pour myself into being the best parent that I can possibly be at the sake of everything else. And all of those things are, for the most part, good desires and have their place. But when we're jealous for those things, for what the world has to offer us, our affection and devotion is misplaced. See, we give things our affection hoping that they will satisfy our souls. That's why we do it. The things we think about when we wake up in the morning, the next thing on the horizon that we want to accomplish, the way we spend our money and our time, we pour ourselves into those things hoping that they will satisfy our souls. And the thing is, they never do. They never do. It's this empty black hole tunnel that we can pour all we want into it, and our souls will never be truly satisfied. They will always be restless. They will always be wanting. They will always crave more and drive us further. And this gets to, for me, the heart of what it must feel like for God to be jealous for us. I picture it like this, and this is why I say God is jealous for us because of what he wants for us. I'm not thinking of anyone in particular. This is a total hypothetical situation. I do not have a story to go with this, but I was thinking this week trying to understand the jealousy of God as he watches us give our attention and affection to things other than him. I was thinking about a 16, 17-year-old girl and her parents watching that life. And let's assume that she's pretty and that she's charming and that she's smart and that she's capable and that she's ambitious and she's got the world at her fingertips, right? But when she's 16, 17 years old, she meets a boy. And she makes that boy her world. And she wakes up thinking about him and she goes to bed thinking about him. And she begins to make her choices around her affection for this boy and her desire to feel affection from him. The way that she dresses, The color of her hair. Maybe the classes that she chooses in school. What she chooses to be involved with after school. Whether or not she engages in this or that extracurricular or works at this or that place. And then maybe her affection for that boy is so great that she allows that to heavily inform her college decision and she doesn't go to the place where she could have gone. How painful must it be for those parents to watch that girl misplace her affection and devotion and so squander her potential on something that essentially does not matter. Dating is fine. I'm not here to criticize it or critique it. But I will say that for the most part, if you're dating in high school, you ain't getting married to that one, okay? So just relax. Just chill out. If you are going to get married to them, they'll still be there in six years. Like, it's not a big deal. I used to teach high school and do student ministry, and I would tell all the kids, whoever you're dating, you're not going to marry. One of you is going to break up with the other one. It's just going to happen. So conduct yourselves accordingly in the relationship. Every now and again, I'm wrong, and high school sweethearts get married, and that's fine, but to watch your daughter with the world at her fingertips, to squander away that potential because of affection for a boy must be a uniquely painful thing. To watch a son who's incredibly capable, who has the world at his fingertips, to squander that potential on a girl or on something else that doesn't matter, that takes his attention off of what he could do and who he could be, has got to be a pretty painful thing for a parent to walk through, to see your hopes and dreams of this child and to see what they're capable of and to watch them squander that on something that doesn't matter and will not return the affection that they need. That's what it must be like for God to watch us fritter our lives away on things that don't matter. That's what it must be like for our Father in Heaven to watch us as we put our head down and just think about career and wealth and money and status. As we make the next God in our life the beach house or the promotion or the job or the company. As we make the God in our life our marriage. shepherd their daughter through the season. I think you would want to ask the question, what is actually worth our primary affection? Mom, dad, where would you have her put her affection and devotion? What do you want her waking up thinking about? School? Class? Job? Building a resume? What do you want her thinking about? And then for us, what is it that we should wake up thinking about? What is it that should be most important to us? I would contend and direct us to the Bible telling us so, that only God can satisfy our souls. If we're to say, what is worthy of that girl's affection and devotion? What is worthy of her life's pursuit? God alone would say, I am. Because in me she will find satisfaction. In me she, she will find affirmation. In me, she will find love. In me, she will find identity. In me, she will find what she needs. I will be enough for her. In God, you will find affection. In God, you will find affirmation. In God, you will finally feel like you are enough. In God, you will finally see your identity and know who you are and what he created you to do and be. In God, you will find the affection that he lavishes on you so that you can lavish it onto others. In God, you will find the love that allows you to be the spouse that you've always wanted to be. In God, you will find the affection that you need to pour out on your kids when they need it the most. In God, we find all we need for all the other things. In God, our restless souls finally find rest. I think that's part of what Jesus was talking about when he says this in Matthew chapter 11. He says, God is jealous for us, for our affection and our devotion because he knows that it is only in him that our restless souls can rest. He knows it is only in him that our greatest needs can be met. So our God is a jealous God, not because of what he wants from you, but because of what he wants for you. And what God wants for you is for your soul to rest. What God wants for you is found in Psalm 1611. At his right hand there are pleasures forevermore. In his presence there is fullness of joy. What God wants for you is John 10.10 that you might have life and have it to the full. What God wants for you is that you would know what love is and it abounds so much that you never have to question yourself or your identity ever again. What God wants for you is for you to be a conduit of his grace and love and affection from him onto others. And so God is jealous for you. When he sees you prioritizing things in your life over and above him, when he knows you're waking up thinking about things that are not things of God, that are not him, that are not in your life because of him. When he knows that you go to bed thinking about things that are not in your life from God, that are not there because of him, he's jealous for you. Not because he's petty and envious and he somehow needs your attention. No, he sees you squandering your affection and devotion on things that cannot satisfy your soul. So when we think of our God and we say that he is a jealous God, it's important to me that we understand that jealousy not to be petty jealousy like we have where we want something from the object of our affection. No, no. It's an altruistic jealousy where he knows he is the only worthy object of your affection and devotion. And when we offer it to him, everything else falls into place. He's jealous for you because he wants you to find rest in him. As we have a day off tomorrow with our families or our friends, I hope that we'll take part of today and part of tomorrow in rest and reflect on what we have been jealous of. Reflect on where we have placed our affection and our devotion. And maybe let's take this holiday weekend to recalibrate and place our affection and devotion back on God and the things of God because he is jealous for us, for our sakes. Let's pray. Father, thank you for being jealous for us. Thank you for wanting what's best for us. I pray, God, that we would see you as the only thing that is worthy of our life's devotion. May our souls find satisfaction and rest in you. May we be encouraged by you. May we feel loved and seen by you. God, I am the most guilty of placing my priorities on other things, of seeing the shiny thing and chasing after it, of waking up and thinking about myriad things, of seeing the shiny thing and chasing after it, of waking up and thinking about myriad things that are not related to my devotion to you. And so, God, I pray for my brothers and sisters who might be like me, that we would recalibrate this weekend, that we would slow down and make you the object of our affection. I am super excited for this sermon this morning. If you let me, I think I could go for about 90 minutes, so buckle up. Thanks for being here. Thanks for joining us online. I'm so glad to get to be with my church family, with faces that I know and love, some of whom love me back after this week. It's been a week, man. It's been arduous. And I've been excited for this sermon since we outlined this series. And I opened up my Bible and I was reading through James and breaking it out into sermons and trying to figure out which parts we get to talk about and which parts we'll have to save for the next time we go through James. And when I arrived at this passage in chapter 3, chapter 3, verses 13 through 18, I was just excited to get to share the message from James with you guys, with my church. Because I don't know how you guys have felt about all the divisiveness and contention in our culture, racial and political and otherwise. But it's been wearying to my soul. It's been hard on my heart. It has grieved me that our culture has been this divided. It's been at least 50 years since our country has seen division like this. And as a pastor, it hurts my heart. And it hurts my heart in part because it's just a lot. But it also hurts my heart because I believe that Jesus' bride, the church, has a part to play in this, in this divisiveness. We actually have a role that God wants us to step into, that he asks us to step into. We have a role in our culture right now of who we should be and what we should do, and I believe that James speaks directly to that role and gives us hope and purpose in the midst of this contention. So I'm excited to talk with my church about that this morning. So let's look at James chapter 3, verses 13 through 18. I'm going to read them all, and then we'll talk about the passage. James writes this, Who is wise and understanding among you? By his conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. I love that phrase. James has this flourish for writing that Paul, who wrote most of the New Testament, does not have. Paul writes his books like an engineer would write their book. It's very matter-of-fact, systemic, like this is how we're doing it. James has this flourish, and so he brackets this idea, which, by the way, he's extracting this idea out of the Sermon on the Mount. The Sermon on the Mount was Jesus' first recorded public address. This is almost like a commentary on the things that Jesus taught in that sermon. And Jesus says, blessed are the meek for they will inherit the earth and blessed are the peacemakers. And so it's like James is pausing to say, yeah, let's talk about those people and why they're needed and how we become like them. And so he opens up with this great phrase that the good works in the meekness of wisdom, and then he brackets it with that great phrase at the end, and harvest a righteousness s is it that wisdom has to be meek? Why is wisdom meek? Why did he choose to pair those things up together? Why did he couple them together in that way? Why is wisdom meek? And so to answer that question, I started thinking about, well, who's the person that I know or that I've seen? What's the example or the personification of someone who lets themselves show, whose good deeds are shown in the meekness of their wisdom. And since I don't like to use myself as an example, I'm just kidding, I'm terrible at this. I thought of my mom-mom. My grandmother on my mom's side, I think personified someone who walked in the meekness of wisdom. Her husband, Don, my papa, I'm very southern, so those are their names, was loud and bombastic. He was a phenomenal storyteller. He was the guy that if you went to dinner with a group of friends and he got sat on the opposite end of the table as you, you were bummed out. Because you're talking to whatever boring person is over here, and you're like, I wish I could listen to that guy. That was my grandpa. That was my papa Don. And Linda was quiet. She was diminutive. She was happy to stay in the background. She didn't really want any of the focus on her. And I didn't appreciate it when I was a kid, because I didn't really understand all those dynamics. But as an adult, as the years progressed, particularly towards the end of her life, when she and I were in the habit of having coffee together every other Monday morning and just chatting for a while, I got to see the ways that her quiet strength and gentle, meek wisdom had carried her through so many seasons of her life. And so I thought, well, she's the example to me of the meekness of wisdom. Then what made her meek? So I thought about her life. She grew up in rural Baton Rouge. I have a great uncle named Dodie Sandifer. All right, that's how Cajun we are. She grew up in a very racist home. Racism was so ubiquitous in her family that when my mom was a little girl, she used racial slurs without understanding what they were. Mama grew to disdain that part of her heritage. She grew to see the evil in it. And when I did her funeral, in her retirement years, she was a bank teller. And when I did her funeral, many of her co-workers, her African-American co-workers, came to the funeral and told me how much they loved my mama and how much she meant to them and how well she loved them. She changed over the course of her lifetime. When my mom was eight, they did a church called Forest Hills, did a bus ministry where you used to be able to do this. Can you imagine? They just drove a bus through neighborhoods and just invited kids to get on. It doesn't matter. Do you have your parents' permission? We don't care. We're going to get you saved. Come to church. Do your parents know where you are? It doesn't matter. Let's go to church. They just went. I can't imagine just sending Mike Harris right here, just go get a bus and just drive around Falls River and just grab kids. It'll be fine. That's so weird. But they they did that in the 60s and so my mom went and praised God that she did because she accepted Christ. And because she accepted Christ, my mom and my papa started going to church with her. So here's a woman who grew up without a faith and she embraces a faith. She changes. But as she embraces that change, she got involved in what I believe was one of the worst kinds of churches. Super legalistic and damaging. I'm talking about super conservative, 70s, Southern Baptist, fundamental oppression. No going to movies, ever. Don't be seen at the movie house, is what it was called. No dancing. Girls wear skirts and dresses only. Always below the knees. None of this, none of this, none of this. It was just writ with legalism. And because she didn't know any better, that's the faith she taught her kids. But she grew up. She grew in wisdom. And she started going to churches that lived a more gracious faith. And she became more gracious in her faith. And she moved away from those old things that she believed. And I could talk to you and tell you story after story of ways that I didn't see at the time, but as I reflect back on her now and watching the scope of her life, ways that I saw her change, ways that I saw her grow in her wisdom. And it occurred to me that wisdom is meek because wisdom knows what it is to hold something ardently and fervently and fanatically in your 20s and be ashamed of it in your 50s. Right? Wisdom knows what it is to hold an opinion tightly and then to see the currents of change move through the community and hold it a little bit more loosely and regret how tightly you used to hold it and who you hurt in holding it that way. Wisdom has fallen on its face a few times. Wisdom knows that it has some shadows in its past and some skeletons in its closet, so it's not going to leap to beat you too hard with yours. Because wisdom has grown in grace. Wisdom has made mistakes. Wisdom has seen who they were when they were younger and been forced through introspection to offer themselves grace for their humanity and likewise is gracious towards others in their humanity. Wisdom is someone in their 60s who doesn't get super annoyed by the person in their 20s because they understand and they were that person too. That's what wisdom does. Because of that, I came to the conclusion that acquiring wisdom is a humbling process. That's why we pair meekness with wisdom because acquiring true wisdom is a humbling process. That's why we pair meekness with wisdom, because acquiring true wisdom is a humbling process. You don't grow in wisdom by just stridently thinking you're right all the time. I'll never forget when I was 18 years old, my dad took me to college. I went to Auburn University my freshman year. He drove me to college, he dropped me off, and he said, son, I'm bringing you here, and I hope that you get dumber. And I was a snot-nosed 18-year-old kid who thought he knew everything. And what he was telling me is you need to grow in wisdom, which, by the way, can you imagine how insufferable I was at 18? I would hate that guy. Like, good, find a new church, pal. I needed to grow in wisdom. I needed to be humbled. I needed to know that I wasn't right about everything. And I think that that's why James pairs meekness with wisdom. Because acquiring wisdom is a humbling process. And so, I want to offer this to you. You take it or leave it. Okay, this is Nate talking, not Scripture. This is just my opinion. You're smart adults. You take it for what it's worth. But I think that there's a litmus test for whether or not we're growing in wisdom, particularly growing in the meekness of wisdom. And I think it's this question. When's the last time you changed your mind about something important? For you as an individual, the things that you hold dear, the things that you hold firmly and stridently, when's the last time you changed your mind about something important? And I'm not talking about going to Winston's for lunch thinking that you're going to get the health nut salad and then calling an audible and getting the prime room sandwich with french fries. I'm not talking about that kind of mind change. I'm talking about the way that you used to feel about a community. Has that shifted? The way over the years that you viewed the other side of the aisle, has that grown more or less gracious? This person in your neighborhood that you can't stand, have you grown to be able to appreciate them a little bit more? The person that you were in their 20s, have you been forced to offer yourself grace for being that person? Have you changed your mind about something that's important to you? Because if you haven't, if you can't think of anything, there's only really two options. Either, dude, you're nailing it. Like, you're right about everything. And that's super impressive. Good for you. Let's have lunch. Or we're just walking in our strideful ignorance, refusing to learn anything that God is trying to teach us. Right? If our mind never changes about anything important, then we're not very open to growing in the meekness of wisdom. That's why just being old doesn't make one wise. Being old and learned and introspective and adaptable and malleable and impressionable and open to reason, like James says here, is how we grow in the meekness of wisdom. So I would ask this morning, are you growing in wisdom? And again, that's my litmus test. If you don't like it, throw it out. If it's helpful, use it. But I think it's important to understand how meekness and wisdom work together, because if we don't, if we can't be meek in our wisdom, then I don't think we can do what we're told to do in the rest of the passage. I want to pick it back up at verse 17. He finishes it this way. He says, but the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. I don't just want to blow by that verse because I think those things are so very important. It is pure. It seeks peace. And this is the thing that I love in here. It is gentle. True wisdom. God's wisdom from above. It's gentle. As I prayed before the sermon a few minutes ago, I prayed, God, let me be brave and let me be gentle. Bravery is not often what I struggle with. Gentleness is. True wisdom is gentle. It's open to reason. It's not convinced of its own correctness all the time. And then he finishes it this way with this great sentence. I just love it. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. And that sounds nice, but we might think to ourselves, what is a harvest of righteousness? I think it goes with the theme in the book of James. In the first week, remember I said that the reason that James wrote this letter was to help us, to help the church pursue wholeness, to help the church become this whole person with a sincere faith, to not live as two disjointed people, as the old nature and the new nature, but to walk in the person that God wanted us to become, to walk in the person that Jesus died to turn us into. We related to Romans 7 where Paul laments, the things that I want to do, I do not do. The things that I do, I do not want to do. Oh, wretched man that I am, who will deliver me from this body of death? That lament is why James was written. And so what he's saying is you will reap a harvest of righteousness. You will move towards that wholeness, towards being the person that God created you to be and died for you to become. A sowing peace by making peace. James is telling us that it's our role to make peace, that true wisdom makes peace. And so I thought, if it's our role to make peace, if that's what God has called us to do, what does it look like to make peace? What does a peacemaker do? I think it's an important question. The first answer, I think, is that a peacemaker values understanding over persuading. A peacemaker values understanding someone over persuading them. Often when we're in a conflict, when we're in a situation, in a relationship or a dynamic where we're not at peace. There's tension here. I think so very often we approach it trying to be persuasive. If they could only see my side, if they could only understand what I'm talking about, if they would only see it from my perspective, or if they would just be encountered with this list of facts, which by the way, 2020 has shown us that facts really are not argument winners anymore. We've all got our own set. We don't trust anybody else's. So that ain't it. Persuasion is not the goal. Understanding is the goal for a peacemaker. The other night, I had a moment in the house that I was very much not proud of. We've got a daughter named Lily, and Lily is the sweetest. She is the best when you see her. A lot of you have seen her on social media, or you might see her here in the church, and she is sweet and cute and adorable, and she's very quiet and meek in the church because she's scared of everyone, and that bodes well for us as parents because it looks like she has behaved. And she is. She is. But here's the thing with Lily. She has a will. She's found it, which is a fun part of parenting, I think. I've told Jen a few times, you're not raising yourself, sweetheart. I'm very sorry for this. You're raising me. And the other day, she expressed that will more than normal, and it got me frazzled. I was getting a little tired of it. And at night, it was time for her to go to bed, and I told her to clean up her room. She had taken some stuff out of a small Tupperware container or a plastic bin or something, and it was kind of all over the floor. It was like little magnets that you can dress girls up with or whatever. And I told her to clean it up. And she said, okay, Daddy. And then I walked out. I came back five minutes later. It was like two things in the bin. And I'm like, what are you doing? Like, clean up. Let's go. I told you to clean. And she's like, I know, but I'm doing it this way. I said, I don't care what way you're doing it. Clean up, sweetheart. Let's go. And I left. And I came back. And there was not adequate progress made. And so I get frustrated. I said, all right, that's it. I'm going to clean this up. You go to the potty, and then we're going to bed. That's it. And she starts to leave, but she says, but Dad, I want to do the other thing. And I said, I don't care. Go and come back. And things started to escalate. And they ended in tears on both sides. And I was not proud of myself at all. And the night ended with us hugging and falling asleep next to each other in her bed, and the world is good. But as I was thinking about it the next morning, she wasn't being defiant, at least not intentionally. She wanted to organize her toys. She didn't want me to put them all up together because she was in the middle of a task, and she just wanted to keep the things that she had separated, separated. She just didn't want me to mess it up. She wasn't trying to say, I'm not going to put it up. She just had a system and it was important to her because she was going to wake up in the morning and she was going to keep playing with it. And if I would have taken just a dang second to understand a four-year-old instead of trying to persuade her, it all could have been avoided. I could have made peace. Instead, I was an idiot. And it makes me wonder how many conflicts in our life would go away if we chose understanding over persuasion. If we just stopped for a minute and thought, am I really right about all the intentions and motives and stupidity that I'm reading into this instance? Or would it be worth it to talk to them and see what their side is? Would it be worth it to try to empathize? Those of us that have relationships in our life that are not at peace, how many of those could be made peaceful if we would simply choose understanding over persuasion? It's not a panacea, but it's a start, isn't it? Peacemakers make that choice. The next thing in your notes, it says that a peacemaker seeks harmony over victory. And that's well and good and that's fine and we can talk about that. But I actually, as I was thinking about it just this morning, it occurred to me that actually what a peacemaker does is they prize the victory over small victories. A peacemaker prizes the victory over small victories. Guys, we're a church. We're believers. The only reason we walk the earth after we come to faith is to share our faith with others. The only reason we still breathe is to bring as many people with us to heaven on our way as possible. That's it. We are here for the souls of men and women. That's why we're doing the whole thing. That's why the first thing in our mission statement is to connect people with Jesus. That's what we want to do. That's the victory. That's what this whole thing is about, is to unite people with their Savior. Yet sometimes we get so caught up in pursuing the small victory that we forsake the victory. Yesterday on Facebook, I posted something that I feel is true. And I just said to Christians that the way that we respond right now in light of the election matters a lot. And I just said, if you're a guy won, be gracious. If you're a guy lost, be gracious. And I wrote that. People started to comment or whatever. I went away. I had dinner with some friends and came back to my phone hours later. And when I came back to my phone, I scrolled down and there was a comment from a guy that actually I met the year that I went to Auburn. I don't know him very well, but we're Facebook friends, and he commented, what should I be if I didn't vote for either of them because I didn't like them, which I think that's not an unfair stance, and I said, you should be gracious, but before I could say that, under his comment, someone else that I know, I know him from back home. He's a good man. He's a loving man. I like this guy. I've since deleted these comments, so you can't go and look at them. He commented under my Auburn friend's thing this big paragraph about how could you think about voting for so-and-so when all of these reasons point that you should vote for so-and-so. Just demeaning him and tearing him down. And then my Auburn friend responded to that, don't come at me with that stuff and did his own paragraph with an article attached to make his point. I didn't read both of the comments. I deleted them immediately. But here's what I know. My Auburn friend is not a believer. The man from back home is. And when I saw his comment in my Facebook thread where he attacked this guy for the way that he felt politically, I thought to myself, what are you doing, man? What are you doing? What are you trying to win? All he has to do is click your name and he knows who you are and what you stand for. And you're going to turn him off to your savior so you can turn him on to your candidate. Who cares? He sacrificed the victory to try to win a victory. And it doesn't matter. Church, the victory is the souls of men. The victory is acquainting people with their Savior. The victory is that people would see Jesus in us and want that in them too. The victory is not in small political or otherwise silly arguments. We're the church. We pursue souls. We pursue the victory. And when we do this, when we make peace by prizing what's important, when we make peace by seeking understanding rather than persuasion, when we sow that peacemaking, we reap a harvest of righteousness. We walk exactly as the people that God designed us to be, which is why I think it's impossible to make true peace if we cannot walk in the meekness of wisdom. They go hand in hand. So here's what's vitally important to me at Grace. That we be peacemakers. That we walk in the meekness of wisdom, that we understand that the true victory is that people would see Jesus, not that they would see our side. So, Grace, let's be peacemakers. I'm going to pray for us. Father, would you make us whole? Would you heal our hearts? Would you heal our community and our country's division? Would you make us your agents of peace? Lord, I pray that we would reap a harvest of righteousness by making as much peace as we can and pointing people towards you. God, may we be brave about the things that matter and may we be gracious about the things that don't. Father, let us walk increasingly in the meekness of wisdom that comes from you And let us in that meekness point people towards your son. It's in his name that we pray. Amen.

And what he was telling me is you need to grow in wisdom, which, by the way, can you imagine how insufferable I was at 18? I would hate that guy. Like, good, find a new church, pal. I needed to grow in wisdom. I needed to be humbled. I needed to know that I wasn't right about everything. And I think that that's why James pairs meekness with wisdom. Because acquiring wisdom is a humbling process. And so, I want to offer this to you. You take it or leave it. Okay, this is Nate talking, not Scripture. This is just my opinion. You're smart adults. You take it for what it's worth. But I think that there's a litmus test for whether or not we're growing in wisdom, particularly growing in the meekness of wisdom. And I think it's this question. When's the last time you changed your mind about something important? For you as an individual, the things that you hold dear, the things that you hold firmly and stridently, when's the last time you changed your mind about something important? And I'm not talking about going to Winston's for lunch thinking that you're going to get the health nut salad and then calling an audible and getting the prime room sandwich with french fries. I'm not talking about that kind of mind change. I'm talking about the way that you used to feel about a community. Has that shifted? The way over the years that you viewed the other side of the aisle, has that grown more or less gracious? This person in your neighborhood that you can't stand, have you grown to be able to appreciate them a little bit more? The person that you were in their 20s, have you been forced to offer yourself grace for being that person? Have you changed your mind about something that's important to you? Because if you haven't, if you can't think of anything, there's only really two options. Either, dude, you're nailing it. Like, you're right about everything. And that's super impressive. Good for you. Let's have lunch. Or we're just walking in our strideful ignorance, refusing to learn anything that God is trying to teach us. Right? If our mind never changes about anything important, then we're not very open to growing in the meekness of wisdom. That's why just being old doesn't make one wise. Being old and learned and introspective and adaptable and malleable and impressionable and open to reason, like James says here, is how we grow in the meekness of wisdom. So I would ask this morning, are you growing in wisdom? And again, that's my litmus test. If you don't like it, throw it out. If it's helpful, use it. But I think it's important to understand how meekness and wisdom work together, because if we don't, if we can't be meek in our wisdom, then I don't think we can do what we're told to do in the rest of the passage. I want to pick it back up at verse 17. He finishes it this way. He says, but the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. I don't just want to blow by that verse because I think those things are so very important. It is pure. It seeks peace. And this is the thing that I love in here. It is gentle. True wisdom. God's wisdom from above. It's gentle. As I prayed before the sermon a few minutes ago, I prayed, God, let me be brave and let me be gentle. Bravery is not often what I struggle with. Gentleness is. True wisdom is gentle. It's open to reason. It's not convinced of its own correctness all the time. And then he finishes it this way with this great sentence. I just love it. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. And that sounds nice, but we might think to ourselves, what is a harvest of righteousness? I think it goes with the theme in the book of James. In the first week, remember I said that the reason that James wrote this letter was to help us, to help the church pursue wholeness, to help the church become this whole person with a sincere faith, to not live as two disjointed people, as the old nature and the new nature, but to walk in the person that God wanted us to become, to walk in the person that Jesus died to turn us into. We related to Romans 7 where Paul laments, the things that I want to do, I do not do. The things that I do, I do not want to do. Oh, wretched man that I am, who will deliver me from this body of death? That lament is why James was written. And so what he's saying is you will reap a harvest of righteousness. You will move towards that wholeness, towards being the person that God created you to be and died for you to become. A sowing peace by making peace. James is telling us that it's our role to make peace, that true wisdom makes peace. And so I thought, if it's our role to make peace, if that's what God has called us to do, what does it look like to make peace? What does a peacemaker do? I think it's an important question. The first answer, I think, is that a peacemaker values understanding over persuading. A peacemaker values understanding someone over persuading them. Often when we're in a conflict, when we're in a situation, in a relationship or a dynamic where we're not at peace. There's tension here. I think so very often we approach it trying to be persuasive. If they could only see my side, if they could only understand what I'm talking about, if they would only see it from my perspective, or if they would just be encountered with this list of facts, which by the way, 2020 has shown us that facts really are not argument winners anymore. We've all got our own set. We don't trust anybody else's. So that ain't it. Persuasion is not the goal. Understanding is the goal for a peacemaker. The other night, I had a moment in the house that I was very much not proud of. We've got a daughter named Lily, and Lily is the sweetest. She is the best when you see her. A lot of you have seen her on social media, or you might see her here in the church, and she is sweet and cute and adorable, and she's very quiet and meek in the church because she's scared of everyone, and that bodes well for us as parents because it looks like she has behaved. And she is. She is. But here's the thing with Lily. She has a will. She's found it, which is a fun part of parenting, I think. I've told Jen a few times, you're not raising yourself, sweetheart. I'm very sorry for this. You're raising me. And the other day, she expressed that will more than normal, and it got me frazzled. I was getting a little tired of it. And at night, it was time for her to go to bed, and I told her to clean up her room. She had taken some stuff out of a small Tupperware container or a plastic bin or something, and it was kind of all over the floor. It was like little magnets that you can dress girls up with or whatever. And I told her to clean it up. And she said, okay, Daddy. And then I walked out. I came back five minutes later. It was like two things in the bin. And I'm like, what are you doing? Like, clean up. Let's go. I told you to clean. And she's like, I know, but I'm doing it this way. I said, I don't care what way you're doing it. Clean up, sweetheart. Let's go. And I left. And I came back. And there was not adequate progress made. And so I get frustrated. I said, all right, that's it. I'm going to clean this up. You go to the potty, and then we're going to bed. That's it. And she starts to leave, but she says, but Dad, I want to do the other thing. And I said, I don't care. Go and come back. And things started to escalate. And they ended in tears on both sides. And I was not proud of myself at all. And the night ended with us hugging and falling asleep next to each other in her bed, and the world is good. But as I was thinking about it the next morning, she wasn't being defiant, at least not intentionally. She wanted to organize her toys. She didn't want me to put them all up together because she was in the middle of a task, and she just wanted to keep the things that she had separated, separated. She just didn't want me to mess it up. She wasn't trying to say, I'm not going to put it up. She just had a system and it was important to her because she was going to wake up in the morning and she was going to keep playing with it. And if I would have taken just a dang second to understand a four-year-old instead of trying to persuade her, it all could have been avoided. I could have made peace. Instead, I was an idiot. And it makes me wonder how many conflicts in our life would go away if we chose understanding over persuasion. If we just stopped for a minute and thought, am I really right about all the intentions and motives and stupidity that I'm reading into this instance? Or would it be worth it to talk to them and see what their side is? Would it be worth it to try to empathize? Those of us that have relationships in our life that are not at peace, how many of those could be made peaceful if we would simply choose understanding over persuasion? It's not a panacea, but it's a start, isn't it? Peacemakers make that choice. The next thing in your notes, it says that a peacemaker seeks harmony over victory. And that's well and good and that's fine and we can talk about that. But I actually, as I was thinking about it just this morning, it occurred to me that actually what a peacemaker does is they prize the victory over small victories. A peacemaker prizes the victory over small victories. Guys, we're a church. We're believers. The only reason we walk the earth after we come to faith is to share our faith with others. The only reason we still breathe is to bring as many people with us to heaven on our way as possible. That's it. We are here for the souls of men and women. That's why we're doing the whole thing. That's why the first thing in our mission statement is to connect people with Jesus. That's what we want to do. That's the victory. That's what this whole thing is about, is to unite people with their Savior. Yet sometimes we get so caught up in pursuing the small victory that we forsake the victory. Yesterday on Facebook, I posted something that I feel is true. And I just said to Christians that the way that we respond right now in light of the election matters a lot. And I just said, if you're a guy won, be gracious. If you're a guy lost, be gracious. And I wrote that. People started to comment or whatever. I went away. I had dinner with some friends and came back to my phone hours later. And when I came back to my phone, I scrolled down and there was a comment from a guy that actually I met the year that I went to Auburn. I don't know him very well, but we're Facebook friends, and he commented, what should I be if I didn't vote for either of them because I didn't like them, which I think that's not an unfair stance, and I said, you should be gracious, but before I could say that, under his comment, someone else that I know, I know him from back home. He's a good man. He's a loving man. I like this guy. I've since deleted these comments, so you can't go and look at them. He commented under my Auburn friend's thing this big paragraph about how could you think about voting for so-and-so when all of these reasons point that you should vote for so-and-so. Just demeaning him and tearing him down. And then my Auburn friend responded to that, don't come at me with that stuff and did his own paragraph with an article attached to make his point. I didn't read both of the comments. I deleted them immediately. But here's what I know. My Auburn friend is not a believer. The man from back home is. And when I saw his comment in my Facebook thread where he attacked this guy for the way that he felt politically, I thought to myself, what are you doing, man? What are you doing? What are you trying to win? All he has to do is click your name and he knows who you are and what you stand for. And you're going to turn him off to your savior so you can turn him on to your candidate. Who cares? He sacrificed the victory to try to win a victory. And it doesn't matter. Church, the victory is the souls of men. The victory is acquainting people with their Savior. The victory is that people would see Jesus in us and want that in them too. The victory is not in small political or otherwise silly arguments. We're the church. We pursue souls. We pursue the victory. And when we do this, when we make peace by prizing what's important, when we make peace by seeking understanding rather than persuasion, when we sow that peacemaking, we reap a harvest of righteousness. We walk exactly as the people that God designed us to be, which is why I think it's impossible to make true peace if we cannot walk in the meekness of wisdom. They go hand in hand. So here's what's vitally important to me at Grace. That we be peacemakers. That we walk in the meekness of wisdom, that we understand that the true victory is that people would see Jesus, not that they would see our side. So, Grace, let's be peacemakers. I'm going to pray for us. Father, would you make us whole? Would you heal our hearts? Would you heal our community and our country's division? Would you make us your agents of peace? Lord, I pray that we would reap a harvest of righteousness by making as much peace as we can and pointing people towards you. God, may we be brave about the things that matter and may we be gracious about the things that don't. Father, let us walk increasingly in the meekness of wisdom that comes from you And let us in that meekness point people towards your son. It's in his name that we pray. Amen.
I am super excited for this sermon this morning. If you let me, I think I could go for about 90 minutes, so buckle up. Thanks for being here. Thanks for joining us online. I'm so glad to get to be with my church family, with faces that I know and love, some of whom love me back after this week. It's been a week, man. It's been arduous. And I've been excited for this sermon since we outlined this series. And I opened up my Bible and I was reading through James and breaking it out into sermons and trying to figure out which parts we get to talk about and which parts we'll have to save for the next time we go through James. And when I arrived at this passage in chapter 3, chapter 3, verses 13 through 18, I was just excited to get to share the message from James with you guys, with my church. Because I don't know how you guys have felt about all the divisiveness and contention in our culture, racial and political and otherwise. But it's been wearying to my soul. It's been hard on my heart. It has grieved me that our culture has been this divided. It's been at least 50 years since our country has seen division like this. And as a pastor, it hurts my heart. And it hurts my heart in part because it's just a lot. But it also hurts my heart because I believe that Jesus' bride, the church, has a part to play in this, in this divisiveness. We actually have a role that God wants us to step into, that he asks us to step into. We have a role in our culture right now of who we should be and what we should do, and I believe that James speaks directly to that role and gives us hope and purpose in the midst of this contention. So I'm excited to talk with my church about that this morning. So let's look at James chapter 3, verses 13 through 18. I'm going to read them all, and then we'll talk about the passage. James writes this, Who is wise and understanding among you? By his conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. I love that phrase. James has this flourish for writing that Paul, who wrote most of the New Testament, does not have. Paul writes his books like an engineer would write their book. It's very matter-of-fact, systemic, like this is how we're doing it. James has this flourish, and so he brackets this idea, which, by the way, he's extracting this idea out of the Sermon on the Mount. The Sermon on the Mount was Jesus' first recorded public address. This is almost like a commentary on the things that Jesus taught in that sermon. And Jesus says, blessed are the meek for they will inherit the earth and blessed are the peacemakers. And so it's like James is pausing to say, yeah, let's talk about those people and why they're needed and how we become like them. And so he opens up with this great phrase that the good works in the meekness of wisdom, and then he brackets it with that great phrase at the end, and harvest a righteousness s is it that wisdom has to be meek? Why is wisdom meek? Why did he choose to pair those things up together? Why did he couple them together in that way? Why is wisdom meek? And so to answer that question, I started thinking about, well, who's the person that I know or that I've seen? What's the example or the personification of someone who lets themselves show, whose good deeds are shown in the meekness of their wisdom. And since I don't like to use myself as an example, I'm just kidding, I'm terrible at this. I thought of my mom-mom. My grandmother on my mom's side, I think personified someone who walked in the meekness of wisdom. Her husband, Don, my papa, I'm very southern, so those are their names, was loud and bombastic. He was a phenomenal storyteller. He was the guy that if you went to dinner with a group of friends and he got sat on the opposite end of the table as you, you were bummed out. Because you're talking to whatever boring person is over here, and you're like, I wish I could listen to that guy. That was my grandpa. That was my papa Don. And Linda was quiet. She was diminutive. She was happy to stay in the background. She didn't really want any of the focus on her. And I didn't appreciate it when I was a kid, because I didn't really understand all those dynamics. But as an adult, as the years progressed, particularly towards the end of her life, when she and I were in the habit of having coffee together every other Monday morning and just chatting for a while, I got to see the ways that her quiet strength and gentle, meek wisdom had carried her through so many seasons of her life. And so I thought, well, she's the example to me of the meekness of wisdom. Then what made her meek? So I thought about her life. She grew up in rural Baton Rouge. I have a great uncle named Dodie Sandifer. All right, that's how Cajun we are. She grew up in a very racist home. Racism was so ubiquitous in her family that when my mom was a little girl, she used racial slurs without understanding what they were. Mama grew to disdain that part of her heritage. She grew to see the evil in it. And when I did her funeral, in her retirement years, she was a bank teller. And when I did her funeral, many of her co-workers, her African-American co-workers, came to the funeral and told me how much they loved my mama and how much she meant to them and how well she loved them. She changed over the course of her lifetime. When my mom was eight, they did a church called Forest Hills, did a bus ministry where you used to be able to do this. Can you imagine? They just drove a bus through neighborhoods and just invited kids to get on. It doesn't matter. Do you have your parents' permission? We don't care. We're going to get you saved. Come to church. Do your parents know where you are? It doesn't matter. Let's go to church. They just went. I can't imagine just sending Mike Harris right here, just go get a bus and just drive around Falls River and just grab kids. It'll be fine. That's so weird. But they they did that in the 60s and so my mom went and praised God that she did because she accepted Christ. And because she accepted Christ, my mom and my papa started going to church with her. So here's a woman who grew up without a faith and she embraces a faith. She changes. But as she embraces that change, she got involved in what I believe was one of the worst kinds of churches. Super legalistic and damaging. I'm talking about super conservative, 70s, Southern Baptist, fundamental oppression. No going to movies, ever. Don't be seen at the movie house, is what it was called. No dancing. Girls wear skirts and dresses only. Always below the knees. None of this, none of this, none of this. It was just writ with legalism. And because she didn't know any better, that's the faith she taught her kids. But she grew up. She grew in wisdom. And she started going to churches that lived a more gracious faith. And she became more gracious in her faith. And she moved away from those old things that she believed. And I could talk to you and tell you story after story of ways that I didn't see at the time, but as I reflect back on her now and watching the scope of her life, ways that I saw her change, ways that I saw her grow in her wisdom. And it occurred to me that wisdom is meek because wisdom knows what it is to hold something ardently and fervently and fanatically in your 20s and be ashamed of it in your 50s. Right? Wisdom knows what it is to hold an opinion tightly and then to see the currents of change move through the community and hold it a little bit more loosely and regret how tightly you used to hold it and who you hurt in holding it that way. Wisdom has fallen on its face a few times. Wisdom knows that it has some shadows in its past and some skeletons in its closet, so it's not going to leap to beat you too hard with yours. Because wisdom has grown in grace. Wisdom has made mistakes. Wisdom has seen who they were when they were younger and been forced through introspection to offer themselves grace for their humanity and likewise is gracious towards others in their humanity. Wisdom is someone in their 60s who doesn't get super annoyed by the person in their 20s because they understand and they were that person too. That's what wisdom does. Because of that, I came to the conclusion that acquiring wisdom is a humbling process. That's why we pair meekness with wisdom because acquiring true wisdom is a humbling process. That's why we pair meekness with wisdom, because acquiring true wisdom is a humbling process. You don't grow in wisdom by just stridently thinking you're right all the time. I'll never forget when I was 18 years old, my dad took me to college. I went to Auburn University my freshman year. He drove me to college, he dropped me off, and he said, son, I'm bringing you here, and I hope that you get dumber. And I was a snot-nosed 18-year-old kid who thought he knew everything. He's a good man. He's a loving man. I like this guy. I've since deleted these comments, so you can't go and look at them. He commented under my Auburn friend's thing this big paragraph about how could you think about voting for so-and-so when all of these reasons point that you should vote for so-and-so. Just demeaning him and tearing him down. And then my Auburn friend responded to that, don't come at me with that stuff and did his own paragraph with an article attached to make his point. I didn't read both of the comments. I deleted them immediately. But here's what I know. My Auburn friend is not a believer. The man from back home is. And when I saw his comment in my Facebook thread where he attacked this guy for the way that he felt politically, I thought to myself, what are you doing, man? What are you doing? What are you trying to win? All he has to do is click your name and he knows who you are and what you stand for. And you're going to turn him off to your savior so you can turn him on to your candidate. Who cares? He sacrificed the victory to try to win a victory. And it doesn't matter. Church, the victory is the souls of men. The victory is acquainting people with their Savior. The victory is that people would see Jesus in us and want that in them too. The victory is not in small political or otherwise silly arguments. We're the church. We pursue souls. We pursue the victory. And when we do this, when we make peace by prizing what's important, when we make peace by seeking understanding rather than persuasion, when we sow that peacemaking, we reap a harvest of righteousness. We walk exactly as the people that God designed us to be, which is why I think it's impossible to make true peace if we cannot walk in the meekness of wisdom. They go hand in hand. So here's what's vitally important to me at Grace. That we be peacemakers. That we walk in the meekness of wisdom, that we understand that the true victory is that people would see Jesus, not that they would see our side. So, Grace, let's be peacemakers. I'm going to pray for us. Father, would you make us whole? Would you heal our hearts? Would you heal our community and our country's division? Would you make us your agents of peace? Lord, I pray that we would reap a harvest of righteousness by making as much peace as we can and pointing people towards you. God, may we be brave about the things that matter and may we be gracious about the things that don't. Father, let us walk increasingly in the meekness of wisdom that comes from you And let us in that meekness point people towards your son. It's in his name that we pray. Amen.
