Good morning and happy Easter. It's so good to see everybody. Thank you for joining us online. It's good to see a good crowd and Easter colors. I love Easter. It's my favorite day of the year. I love everything that it celebrates. It's such a victorious day. It celebrates not only the greatest victory ever won, but the greatest one to come. It gives us hope for a future. My favorite quote about Easter is actually from Pope John Paul II. He said, we do not give over, give ourselves over to despair. We are the Easter people and Alleluia is our song. And what a day to come together and celebrate our risen Savior and all that he won for us. As we do that, we are in the middle of our series called Greater, going through the book of Hebrews together, and we're going to continue right on with that here on Easter. So hopefully you've been able to follow along and you have kind of a loose awareness of what we've been talking about, but for the uninitiated, for those that got drugged here by friends or are watching in somebody's living room, just so that we all are caught up together. The book of Hebrews is a letter. We don't know who wrote it, but we do know that it was written to Jewish people who lived outside of Israel in a Greek context who had at some point in their life converted to Christianity. So they grew up as practicing Jews, practicing the faith of Judaism, and then at some point received the news about Jesus and his resurrection and placed their faith in Jesus and converted to Christianity. Because of that conversion, they faced persecution from within and without, from the Roman government and from their own community, both of whom were trying to encourage them in various ways to walk away from their newfound faith and to embrace their old way of life. And so the author of Hebrews writes this letter to those people, those converted Jews into Christians, to compel them to stay the course in their faith. And he chooses to try to compel them by painting this lofty, soaring picture of Jesus and who he is. And he paints this picture by way of comparison. He compares Jesus to different facets of the Hebrew faith, which is why we're calling the series Greater, because he was greater than the angels and the other messengers. He was greater than Moses and the law. We see that he's the great high priest we talked about a couple weeks ago. And this week, we see that he's the greatest sacrifice. Now, to appreciate the fact that Jesus is the greatest sacrifice, we need to understand a little bit about how the sacrificial system in the Old Testament worked. And I know that you might think to yourself, boy, this is a weird place to go on Easter, but hang with me, okay? We're going to get to where we're going, but we've got to move through here first. In the Old Testament, the way that you would be right with God, the way that you would have a good standing before God, in our New Testament vernacular, most of us probably think of it as being saved. So in the Old Testament, the way that you were saved, or really the way that you had right standing before God, is through the sacrificial system. In Leviticus, we're given 630 some odd laws, and you had to live your life trying to follow those as best you could. If you could follow them perfectly, then good news, God is happy with you. But just in case you fall short, which everyone but Jesus did, then there were sacrifices that you could make. So once a week, once a month, whatever your rhythm allowed, whatever your wealth allowed, the head of the household, the dad or the grandfather, would take a bull or a lamb or a goat or whatever the sins of that household required based on different parameters of sacrifices that we're not going to get into. But he would take an appropriate sacrifice to the local temple, and the priest would sacrifice this animal on your family's behalf. And as the animal was sacrificed, the father would lay his hands on the head of the bull or the lamb or the goat or whatever it was, and the sins of the family are symbolically transferred onto this animal that is now paying the penalty for your sins. And once you go through this ritual of sacrifice, now you're good. You and God are squared away. You're fine. All your past sins are forgiven. The problem with the animal sacrifice is it only covered your past sins. So if you planned on screwing up in the future, well, then you better plan on making some more sacrifices. And you would. So every week or month you had to go back and you had to make a new sacrifice for the fresh sins. And then once a year on the greatest day in the Hebrew calendar, on the day of atonement, the high priest would go into the tabernacle or into the temple, into the Holy of Holies in the very presence of God, offer a sacrifice for himself and for his sins, and then a sacrifice for the nation of Israel. And it was this system of sacrifices of sinning and repenting and offering sacrifice to give yourself right standing before God. It was this system of sacrifices, of sinning and repenting and offering sacrifice to make yourself, give yourself right standing before God. It was this system of sacrifices that kept you right before God, that kept you saved, right? And so in the Old Testament, they really focused a lot on doing the rituals the right way, on offering the sacrifice in the right way, of putting our hands in the right place. If you were here a few falls ago, we did a series called Feast, where we went through the Jewish festivals, and the biggest one is the Day of Atonement. We spent a whole Sunday morning on the pomp and the circumstance in the Day of Atonement, and when things are supposed to happen, and the ceremonial bath, and the robe that you're supposed to wear, and when this sacrifice happens, and who's allowed in this room, in this space, and it was all very choreographed and nuanced and detailed. And you see, that led them to this assumption in the Old Testament. In the Old Testament, they thought the rituals were the point. They thought the rituals were the point. If we can do everything just right, if I offer the sacrifice in the right way, if my priest is a good priest and he's doing it right, if the day of atonement goes well and that high priest performs his sacerdotal duties in the right way, then we're good. In the Old Testament, they thought that the rituals that they were following were the point. The problem is there's a little bit of Mr. Miyagi going on in these rituals. Now, I wanted to show you guys a clip from the 80s smash hit Karate Kid, but we can't. We're fancy now and we stream on YouTube and they would shut down our channel if we showed it, so we decided not to chance it. And now you'll be subjected to me describing to you a movie scene. So let's do this together. For those that don't know, Karate Kid is the predecessor to the really cruddy Cobra Kai that's on Netflix now and is a shadow of the former realities. But in Karate Kid, there's this great scene. There's a guy named, there's a little kid, or he's a teenager named Daniel, and he's getting bullied, okay? The kids are picking on him and he can't fend for himself and whatever, whatever. And so he finds this karate master named Mr. Miyagi. And he goes to Mr. Miyagi, and he says, will you train me? Teach me to do karate like you do karate. And Mr. Miyagi says, okay. But if you do karate, you got to do it all the way. You can't waver. If you do it, we'll squish you, he says. And Daniel's like, I'm in. And he goes, okay, great. And he puts a sponge in his hand and a rag in his hand, and he says, here's my cars. Wax on, wax off. Clean my cars. And he's like, what? And he goes, ah, no questions. You clean my cars. Daniel's like, all right, fine. So he starts cleaning the cars, right? And then the next scene over, he's like washing the car like this, and Miyagi sees him, and he's like, no, what are you doing? Wax on, and he takes his hand, and then wax off. And he moves it really intentionally. And he's like, what's the big deal with the waxing on and the waxing off? I'm cleaning the cars, right? And then he does this series of chores. He paints the fence, and he sands the floor, and he does all these repetitive motions. And it feels, for the first several weeks of of his training that Mr. Miyagi is really just using him for free labor, right? That he's just taking advantage of this kid's desire to learn karate and he's not actually learning anything. And then there's this great scene when Daniel gets ticked and he kind of confronts him. He's like, what's the deal? I want to learn karate and you're just making me do chores. And Mr. Miyagi's like, all right, wax on. And he's like, and he goes, no. And he takes his hand and he does it really intentionally. He goes, wax on. And then you hear Mr. Miyagi scream, hi, and he goes to punch him, right? And Daniel blocks the punch. And then he tries to punch him again and Daniel blocks the punch. And he's like, sand the floor and he blocks the kick. You know, paint the fence and he blocks the punch. And he's like, sand the floor, and he blocks the kick. You know, paint the fence, and he blocks the punch. And you realize in this moment, oh man, Mr. Miyagi really knows what he's doing. This is amazing. I'm all in on the karate master. This is like the smartest thing that happened in the 80s. And you can't believe it. And you're like, oh my gosh, all the things that he was doing, he was teaching him muscle memory. He was teaching him karate. Those were a form of what was to come. The waxing the floor wasn't the point. Waxing on wasn't the point. Sanding the fence wasn't the point. All the chores weren't the point. He was getting them to the point that he didn't understand yet. This is what's happening with the Old Testament rituals. They thought that the rituals were the point, that the cleaning of the actual floor, that the sanding the floor, the painting the fence, that that was the point. But they were really, through those rituals, getting in a much deeper reality. And the author of Hebrews actually writes about this reality and lays it out for them almost. I'm not willing to call it sarcastic and joking, but man what he's saying. He's saying, you guys went through these rituals all this time ago. And then he even comes out and he overtly says it. Those were shadows of the reality that was to come. Those rituals that you were doing that day of atonement was a shadow of the reality that was to come. It's not here yet. And then I love the way that he ends it. This is almost the sarcastic part for me. Maybe I just read my own personality into it. But it's like he leans in and he's like, did you really think the blood of bulls and goats is doing anything? Do you think there's anything magical going on in their blood? It's a symbol, guys. It doesn't make a difference. The ritual's not the point. And then he says this about Jesus. He says, those things weren't the point. They were a shadow of the realities to come. It's the reality of the ritual. And then he goes on and he says, and this is really the fulfillment of those rituals. This is why we did that. And he talks about Jesus in verses 11 through 14, when he writes, He says, that the high priest was pointing to our great high priest in Christ. You watched the sacrifices happen. You didn't realize that the sacrifice was a shadow of the reality that was going to come in Christ as he offered the ultimate sacrifices. And we've already acknowledged that the limited ability of the sacrifice of the animals was that they only covered the things that had happened in the past. But with the eternal sacrifice of Christ, you're not only forgiven for all the things you did up until the moment that you accept that sacrifice, but all the things that God knows you're going to do in the future, which is the remarkable thing about salvation. So he's saying that Jesus is the fulfillment of all of the rituals. And what we need to see is what he was trying to get them to see is that the real point of the rituals was to point to the point. Do you get the point? The real point of the rituals was to point to the point. Think about it. The point is Jesus. The law that they give him in the Old Testament, follow these rules and you can be okay with God. The point of those rules was never to make them okay with God. It was to show them their inability to ever earn their way into God's favor and so surrender to their need for God. The law was given so that we would acknowledge our need for Jesus. The sacrifices that he gives in the Old Testament, those point to the sacrifice of Christ one day. The role of the high priest, the imperfect high priest going into the Holy of Holies is a picture of Jesus as your high priest dying on the cross and then going to heaven and sitting at the right hand of God where we talked about a couple of weeks ago. He prays for you. He intercesses for you. He goes to the creator of the universe and he says, I have him. I have her. They're good. They can approach. He goes, he not only wins our salvation, but then he goes and he sits at the right hand of the throne of God and he ushers in our presence into the throne room so that anytime we want to, anywhere we are, we bow our heads and we say, dear God, and we are rushed right into the very throne room of God, into his presence, which is not a place that we would dare tread if we were not going in the name of Christ. That's what our high priest does for us. And what he wants them to see is that everything in the Old Testament, everything in your old way of life, the point of it is to point to the point. It's all pointing to Jesus. The prophets pointed to Jesus. The kingship of David points to Jesus. The priesthood of Melchizedek points to Jesus. All streams are running to Jesus. The point of everything is to point to Christ. And it would make sense to me if now you were thinking, okay, Nate, that's neat, but we don't live in the Old Testament. We don't do those rituals. So I'm glad I understand that, but what does that mean for me? I'm glad you asked. Don't you understand that we're still just waxing on and waxing off? Don't you understand that we're still just being Miyagi'd? That everything we do as a church is designed to point ourselves and others to the point? Don't you understand that everything we do as a church, as a church, everything we do is designed to point ourselves and others to the point. We come here and we gather together and we worship corporately. We sing praises to our God. Do you understand that that's a picture of heaven? That that's just this glimpse, just this sliver of our ability, the grace that God gives us to gather together with other people who are united in faith and come together as a body of faith and praise God to his throne. That that's a picture of what we're going to be doing in heaven. So that when we come and we praise God together, the point isn't to worship and be moved in your soul right now. The point is to understand that one day we will do this for all of eternity, that one day I won't just be singing next to the people I go to church with, but I will be singing with all saints for all of history. I will be praising next to Moses and David and my grandparents and Esther and Ruth and Naomi and all the heroes of our faith. We will come together and we will praise before the throne together. And what we do on Sunday morning is a shadow, a glimpse of the reality that is to come in heaven. We're pointing to the point. Don't you understand that when we take communion, it's not about the ritual? It's not about how we do it. It's not about if we dip it right or if we use the right bread. It's pointing to the point. As a matter of fact, I just heard before the service started, and I said, oh, that's great. I'm going to use it in the sermon. We did communion two weeks ago, and a single guy was watching online, and he wanted to participate in communion, and the best he could muster up was a tortilla chip and a glass of wine. Great. He participated in communion with his family. I would lean into that like the author of Hebrews did and say, do you really think there's anything magical going on in the bread? I think it matters whether you use Welch's or like whatever, Summer Home. It doesn't matter. I don't even know if that's a wine. I'm a bourbon guy. Somebody in between services, somebody tell me a good wine to use there, and I'll see if I can remember it in the second service. There's nothing special going on in those elements. It's a sign of the things to come. It's pointing to the point that one day we will be gathered around the table of God, of the King of the universe, and we are adopted sons and daughters of the King, and we are invited into that fellowship with Jesus. It is a reminder of what Jesus did 2,000 years ago, and it's a reminder of what he will do, what he has promised to do in the future. Do you understand that even the behaviors that Scripture admonishes in you are designed to point to the point? That faithfulness and goodness and kindness and gentleness and meekness, that God doesn't implore you to be gentle for gentleness' sake. He implores you to be gentle because when you are different from the world that we live in, when you are so gentle that it's noticeable, it orients your heart towards Christ and other people who watch you walk in your gentleness are oriented towards Christ as well. That he asks you to be forgiving, not for the sake of being forgiving, not for forgiveness's sake, but for the sake that with radical forgiveness, we mirror Christ and orients our heart to him and other people are pointed to Jesus as a result of our forgiveness. Go down the list. Goodness, love, mercy, charity. All those behaviors that are prescribed in the New Testament, we're not prescribed them for the sake of the behavior, but so that our hearts would be oriented towards Jesus and other people would see that in us and want to know our Savior as well. Even our marriages, these things that we go through for our lives, we choose a life partner, we stay married, we love them, and even the most holy of marriages, it's a ritual to point to the point. The marriage is used over and over and over again in scripture as a picture of the way that Christ loves the church, that we are the bride of Christ. Pure, unadulterated, marital love between the most holy of people who love Christ only serves to show the world around them how Christ loves the church. Marriage itself is designed to point us to the point. We're still just waxing on and waxing off. Even, I would say to you, fighting your own sin nature within yourself, striving and failing and striving and failing and feeling never good enough is intentional to point you to the point so that you'll come to the end of yourself and admit, I need Christ. Even our striving against ourselves in sin is serving to point us to the point. Not to mention baptism, what we just did. People get concerned about the ritual. Did we do it right? We were in the bathroom changing afterwards and Kyle said, did my head go all the way under? And I said, you're good, man. It took. That doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. That's not the point. Whether or not we did the baptism right is not the point. The point is that it points to Christ. In Romans 6 it says in baptism we are buried with Christ in death and we are raised to walk in newness of life. That's why the early church did it on Easter because it's a symbol of Jesus being put in the grave and when Kyle Kyle goes under the water, he's being put in the grave too. And his former self is passing away. And when he rises up out of the water, he is washed clean. He is sprinkled pure by the blood of Christ. He raises to walk in newness of life in eternity with Jesus. It's a picture of Easter. It doesn't matter if we do it right. The point is not the ritual. The point is to point us to Christ. And speaking of Easter, Easter, more than any other day, points us to the point. Easter, more than any other day, points us to Christ. It is amazing to me, the victory that was won on Easter. It is amazing to me that when Mary went and she found the tomb and she heard the greatest line in the Bible from the angel, why do you search for the living among the dead? He is not living. Or he is not here, he is living just as he said. In that victory, Jesus conquered hell and Satan. Jesus conquered death for us. Jesus conquered disease for us. When we gather on Easter, we remember those of us who have lost loved ones in the last year or even further away than that. We are reminded that the last time we said goodbye to them was not goodbye forever. It was goodbye for now. Easter reminds us of that reality. Easter reminds us of the hope that we have. Because Scripture says, death, where are your shackles? Sin, where is your sting? Like it's been defeated. Jesus won that for us because Jesus died on the cross and left the tomb empty and went to heaven as our high priest and now prays for us because he won us that salvation. We get together on Easter and we remember that reality. And because he did that, my friend Kyle, his father watched him from heaven get baptized with his little granddaughter and with his wife sitting on the row and his daughter-in-law that he loved so much. He watched that and participated in that. And when Kyle goes to heaven one day, he's going to hug him. That was one on Easter. Do you understand? We don't have to fear what everybody else fears. We have a tremendous hope. That's why Pope John Paul II said, we do not give way to despair. We are the Easter people and hallelujah is our song. We praise God no matter what. It's an amazing thing that was won on Easter. And here's the bigger deal. Not only on Easter do we remember the victory that Jesus won and be grateful for what it did to us and ushering us into heaven and uniting us with him for all of eternity? But his victory over death is the greatest victory that's ever been won, but it's not the greatest one that will be won because Revelation tells us that Jesus is coming back on a white horse and he's coming back to wreck shop and he's gonna set up his new kingdom and his new earth where there will be no more weeping and no more crying and no more pain anymore for the former things have passed away. Jesus is going to come back and win that victory. One day when we don't have to ask why do shootings happen and why do bad things happen to good people and why do bad people seem to thrive? Jesus is going to come back and he's going to make all that make sense. As Christians, that is the promise that we cling to. That is our hope that will not put us to shame. That is what we usher others to. So even Easter, as we celebrate it, the point is not only the resurrection of Christ, but also the greatest victory that he will win. It's his seal on his promise. I kept that promise. I sent my son. He died for you. He conquered death. He resurrected. He ascended to the right hand of the Father. He prays for you. And one day he's coming back and he's going to make everything right. And so on Easter, we celebrate the promise that we remember that has been kept and we celebrate the promise that we look forward to him keeping. It's still pointing us to the point. As we celebrate Easter with our families, and we do all the things that we do, let us remember the victory that Christ won for us. Let us acknowledge that just like the Old Testament church, they were simply waxing on and waxing off, that the rituals and the things they did were simply designed to point them to Christ, that so it is with us as we exist as the New Testament church, that all the things he asks us to do and all the rituals he's installed and all the behaviors in our life and all the faith that he asks from us is really designed to point us to the point. And let us remember that on Easter, we don't just celebrate a victory won, but one that we know will be won in the future. Let's pray, and we'll continue to worship together. Father, we are so grateful to you. We're so grateful for your son. Thank you for sending him to pay the penalty for our sins. Lord, I pray that if there is somebody who doesn't know you, that this would be the morning when they decide that they want to. If there's someone who hasn't felt your forgiveness, let this be the day that they feel it. God, let us accept more and more that everything in our life is simply designed to point us back to Jesus. That everything we do at the church, everything that you encourage us to do together, all the ways that you encourage us to love, all the ways that you love us, all the things that you let us struggle with are designed, Father, to point us to our need for your Son. God, I pray that we would have the best Easter, not only reflecting on the victory that you've won, but on the one that you promised to win too. And it's in that returning Savior's name that we pray. And then the next scene over, he's like washing the car like this, and Miyagi sees him, and he's like, no, what are you doing? Wax on, and he takes his hand, and then wax off. And he moves it really intentionally. And he's like, what's the big deal with the waxing on and the waxing off? I'm cleaning the cars, right? And then he does this series of chores. He paints the fence, and he sands the floor, and he does all these repetitive motions. And it feels, for the first several weeks of of his training that Mr. Miyagi is really just using him for free labor, right? That he's just taking advantage of this kid's desire to learn karate and he's not actually learning anything. And then there's this great scene when Daniel gets ticked and he kind of confronts him. He's like, what's the deal? I want to learn karate and you're just making me do chores. And Mr. Miyagi's like, all right, wax on. And he's like, and he goes, no. And he takes his hand and he does it really intentionally. He goes, wax on. And then you hear Mr. Miyagi scream, hi, and he goes to punch him, right? And Daniel blocks the punch. And then he tries to punch him again and Daniel blocks the punch. And he's like, sand the floor and he blocks the kick. You know, paint the fence and he blocks the punch. And he's like, sand the floor, and he blocks the kick. You know, paint the fence, and he blocks the punch. And you realize in this moment, oh man, Mr. Miyagi really knows what he's doing. This is amazing. I'm all in on the karate master. This is like the smartest thing that happened in the 80s. And you can't believe it. And you're like, oh my gosh, all the things that he was doing, he was teaching him muscle memory. He was teaching him karate. Those were a form of what was to come. The waxing the floor wasn't the point. Waxing on wasn't the point. Sanding the fence wasn't the point. All the chores weren't the point. He was getting them to the point that he didn't understand yet. This is what's happening with the Old Testament rituals. They thought that the rituals were the point, that the cleaning of the actual floor, that the sanding the floor, the painting the fence, that that was the point. But they were really, through those rituals, getting in a much deeper reality. And the author of Hebrews actually writes about this reality and lays it out for them almost. I'm not willing to call it sarcastic and joking, but man what he's saying. He's saying, you guys went through these rituals all this time ago. And then he even comes out and he overtly says it. Those were shadows of the reality that was to come. Those rituals that you were doing that day of atonement was a shadow of the reality that was to come. It's not here yet. And then I love the way that he ends it. This is almost the sarcastic part for me. Maybe I just read my own personality into it. But it's like he leans in and he's like, did you really think the blood of bulls and goats is doing anything? Do you think there's anything magical going on in their blood? It's a symbol, guys. It doesn't make a difference. The ritual's not the point. And then he says this about Jesus. He says, those things weren't the point. They were a shadow of the realities to come. It's the reality of the ritual. And then he goes on and he says, and this is really the fulfillment of those rituals. This is why we did that. And he talks about Jesus in verses 11 through 14, when he writes, He says, that the high priest was pointing to our great high priest in Christ. You watched the sacrifices happen. You didn't realize that the sacrifice was a shadow of the reality that was going to come in Christ as he offered the ultimate sacrifices. And we've already acknowledged that the limited ability of the sacrifice of the animals was that they only covered the things that had happened in the past. But with the eternal sacrifice of Christ, you're not only forgiven for all the things you did up until the moment that you accept that sacrifice, but all the things that God knows you're going to do in the future, which is the remarkable thing about salvation. So he's saying that Jesus is the fulfillment of all of the rituals. And what we need to see is what he was trying to get them to see is that the real point of the rituals was to point to the point. Do you get the point? The real point of the rituals was to point to the point. Think about it. The point is Jesus. The law that they give him in the Old Testament, follow these rules and you can be okay with God. The point of those rules was never to make them okay with God. It was to show them their inability to ever earn their way into God's favor and so surrender to their need for God. The law was given so that we would acknowledge our need for Jesus. The sacrifices that he gives in the Old Testament, those point to the sacrifice of Christ one day. The role of the high priest, the imperfect high priest going into the Holy of Holies is a picture of Jesus as your high priest dying on the cross and then going to heaven and sitting at the right hand of God where we talked about a couple of weeks ago. He prays for you. He intercesses for you. He goes to the creator of the universe and he says, I have him. I have her. They're good. They can approach. He goes, he not only wins our salvation, but then he goes and he sits at the right hand of the throne of God and he ushers in our presence into the throne room so that anytime we want to, anywhere we are, we bow our heads and we say, dear God, and we are rushed right into the very throne room of God, into his presence, which is not a place that we would dare tread if we were not going in the name of Christ. That's what our high priest does for us. And what he wants them to see is that everything in the Old Testament, everything in your old way of life, the point of it is to point to the point. It's all pointing to Jesus. The prophets pointed to Jesus. The kingship of David points to Jesus. The priesthood of Melchizedek points to Jesus. All streams are running to Jesus. The point of everything is to point to Christ. And it would make sense to me if now you were thinking, okay, Nate, that's neat, but we don't live in the Old Testament. We don't do those rituals. So I'm glad I understand that, but what does that mean for me? I'm glad you asked. Don't you understand that we're still just waxing on and waxing off? Don't you understand that we're still just being Miyagi'd? That everything we do as a church is designed to point ourselves and others to the point? Don't you understand that everything we do as a church, as a church, everything we do is designed to point ourselves and others to the point. We come here and we gather together and we worship corporately. We sing praises to our God. Do you understand that that's a picture of heaven? That that's just this glimpse, just this sliver of our ability, the grace that God gives us to gather together with other people who are united in faith and come together as a body of faith and praise God to his throne. That that's a picture of what we're going to be doing in heaven. So that when we come and we praise God together, the point isn't to worship and be moved in your soul right now. The point is to understand that one day we will do this for all of eternity, that one day I won't just be singing next to the people I go to church with, but I will be singing with all saints for all of history. I will be praising next to Moses and David and my grandparents and Esther and Ruth and Naomi and all the heroes of our faith. We will come together and we will praise before the throne together. And what we do on Sunday morning is a shadow, a glimpse of the reality that is to come in heaven. We're pointing to the point. Don't you understand that when we take communion, it's not about the ritual? It's not about how we do it. It's not about if we dip it right or if we use the right bread. It's pointing to the point. As a matter of fact, I just heard before the service started, and I said, oh, that's great. I'm going to use it in the sermon. We did communion two weeks ago, and a single guy was watching online, and he wanted to participate in communion, and the best he could muster up was a tortilla chip and a glass of wine. Great. He participated in communion with his family. I would lean into that like the author of Hebrews did and say, do you really think there's anything magical going on in the bread? I think it matters whether you use Welch's or like whatever, Summer Home. It doesn't matter. I don't even know if that's a wine. I'm a bourbon guy. Somebody in between services, somebody tell me a good wine to use there, and I'll see if I can remember it in the second service. There's nothing special going on in those elements. It's a sign of the things to come. It's pointing to the point that one day we will be gathered around the table of God, of the King of the universe, and we are adopted sons and daughters of the King, and we are invited into that fellowship with Jesus. It is a reminder of what Jesus did 2,000 years ago, and it's a reminder of what he will do, what he has promised to do in the future. Do you understand that even the behaviors that Scripture admonishes in you are designed to point to the point? That faithfulness and goodness and kindness and gentleness and meekness, that God doesn't implore you to be gentle for gentleness' sake. He implores you to be gentle because when you are different from the world that we live in, when you are so gentle that it's noticeable, it orients your heart towards Christ and other people who watch you walk in your gentleness are oriented towards Christ as well. That he asks you to be forgiving, not for the sake of being forgiving, not for forgiveness's sake, but for the sake that with radical forgiveness, we mirror Christ and orients our heart to him and other people are pointed to Jesus as a result of our forgiveness. Go down the list. Goodness, love, mercy, charity. All those behaviors that are prescribed in the New Testament, we're not prescribed them for the sake of the behavior, but so that our hearts would be oriented towards Jesus and other people would see that in us and want to know our Savior as well. Even our marriages, these things that we go through for our lives, we choose a life partner, we stay married, we love them, and even the most holy of marriages, it's a ritual to point to the point. The marriage is used over and over and over again in scripture as a picture of the way that Christ loves the church, that we are the bride of Christ. Pure, unadulterated, marital love between the most holy of people who love Christ only serves to show the world around them how Christ loves the church. Marriage itself is designed to point us to the point. We're still just waxing on and waxing off. Even, I would say to you, fighting your own sin nature within yourself, striving and failing and striving and failing and feeling never good enough is intentional to point you to the point so that you'll come to the end of yourself and admit, I need Christ. Even our striving against ourselves in sin is serving to point us to the point. Not to mention baptism, what we just did. People get concerned about the ritual. Did we do it right? We were in the bathroom changing afterwards and Kyle said, did my head go all the way under? And I said, you're good, man. It took. That doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. That's not the point. Whether or not we did the baptism right is not the point. The point is that it points to Christ. In Romans 6 it says in baptism we are buried with Christ in death and we are raised to walk in newness of life. That's why the early church did it on Easter because it's a symbol of Jesus being put in the grave and when Kyle Kyle goes under the water, he's being put in the grave too. And his former self is passing away. And when he rises up out of the water, he is washed clean. He is sprinkled pure by the blood of Christ. He raises to walk in newness of life in eternity with Jesus. It's a picture of Easter. It doesn't matter if we do it right. The point is not the ritual. The point is to point us to Christ. And speaking of Easter, Easter, more than any other day, points us to the point. Easter, more than any other day, points us to Christ. It is amazing to me, the victory that was won on Easter. It is amazing to me that when Mary went and she found the tomb and she heard the greatest line in the Bible from the angel, why do you search for the living among the dead? He is not living. Or he is not here, he is living just as he said. In that victory, Jesus conquered hell and Satan. Jesus conquered death for us. Jesus conquered disease for us. When we gather on Easter, we remember those of us who have lost loved ones in the last year or even further away than that. We are reminded that the last time we said goodbye to them was not goodbye forever. It was goodbye for now. Easter reminds us of that reality. Easter reminds us of the hope that we have. Because Scripture says, death, where are your shackles? Sin, where is your sting? Like it's been defeated. Jesus won that for us because Jesus died on the cross and left the tomb empty and went to heaven as our high priest and now prays for us because he won us that salvation. We get together on Easter and we remember that reality. And because he did that, my friend Kyle, his father watched him from heaven get baptized with his little granddaughter and with his wife sitting on the row and his daughter-in-law that he loved so much. He watched that and participated in that. And when Kyle goes to heaven one day, he's going to hug him. That was one on Easter. Do you understand? We don't have to fear what everybody else fears. We have a tremendous hope. That's why Pope John Paul II said, we do not give way to despair. We are the Easter people and hallelujah is our song. We praise God no matter what. It's an amazing thing that was won on Easter. And here's the bigger deal. Not only on Easter do we remember the victory that Jesus won and be grateful for what it did to us and ushering us into heaven and uniting us with him for all of eternity? But his victory over death is the greatest victory that's ever been won, but it's not the greatest one that will be won because Revelation tells us that Jesus is coming back on a white horse and he's coming back to wreck shop and he's gonna set up his new kingdom and his new earth where there will be no more weeping and no more crying and no more pain anymore for the former things have passed away. Jesus is going to come back and win that victory. One day when we don't have to ask why do shootings happen and why do bad things happen to good people and why do bad people seem to thrive? Jesus is going to come back and he's going to make all that make sense. As Christians, that is the promise that we cling to. That is our hope that will not put us to shame. That is what we usher others to. So even Easter, as we celebrate it, the point is not only the resurrection of Christ, but also the greatest victory that he will win. It's his seal on his promise. I kept that promise. I sent my son. He died for you. He conquered death. He resurrected. He ascended to the right hand of the Father. He prays for you. And one day he's coming back and he's going to make everything right. And so on Easter, we celebrate the promise that we remember that has been kept and we celebrate the promise that we look forward to him keeping. It's still pointing us to the point. As we celebrate Easter with our families, and we do all the things that we do, let us remember the victory that Christ won for us. Let us acknowledge that just like the Old Testament church, they were simply waxing on and waxing off, that the rituals and the things they did were simply designed to point them to Christ, that so it is with us as we exist as the New Testament church, that all the things he asks us to do and all the rituals he's installed and all the behaviors in our life and all the faith that he asks from us is really designed to point us to the point. And let us remember that on Easter, we don't just celebrate a victory won, but one that we know will be won in the future. Let's pray, and we'll continue to worship together. Father, we are so grateful to you. We're so grateful for your son. Thank you for sending him to pay the penalty for our sins. Lord, I pray that if there is somebody who doesn't know you, that this would be the morning when they decide that they want to. If there's someone who hasn't felt your forgiveness, let this be the day that they feel it. God, let us accept more and more that everything in our life is simply designed to point us back to Jesus. That everything we do at the church, everything that you encourage us to do together, all the ways that you encourage us to love, all the ways that you love us, all the things that you let us struggle with are designed, Father, to point us to our need for your Son. God, I pray that we would have the best Easter, not only reflecting on the victory that you've won, but on the one that you promised to win too. And it's in that returning Savior's name that we pray. Good morning and happy Easter. It's so good to see everybody. Thank you for joining us online. It's good to see a good crowd and Easter colors. I love Easter. It's my favorite day of the year. I love everything that it celebrates. It's such a victorious day. It celebrates not only the greatest victory ever won, but the greatest one to come. It gives us hope for a future. My favorite quote about Easter is actually from Pope John Paul II. He said, we do not give over, give ourselves over to despair. We are the Easter people and Alleluia is our song. And what a day to come together and celebrate our risen Savior and all that he won for us. As we do that, we are in the middle of our series called Greater, going through the book of Hebrews together, and we're going to continue right on with that here on Easter. So hopefully you've been able to follow along and you have kind of a loose awareness of what we've been talking about, but for the uninitiated, for those that got drugged here by friends or are watching in somebody's living room, just so that we all are caught up together. The book of Hebrews is a letter. We don't know who wrote it, but we do know that it was written to Jewish people who lived outside of Israel in a Greek context who had at some point in their life converted to Christianity. So they grew up as practicing Jews, practicing the faith of Judaism, and then at some point received the news about Jesus and his resurrection and placed their faith in Jesus and converted to Christianity. Because of that conversion, they faced persecution from within and without, from the Roman government and from their own community, both of whom were trying to encourage them in various ways to walk away from their newfound faith and to embrace their old way of life. And so the author of Hebrews writes this letter to those people, those converted Jews into Christians, to compel them to stay the course in their faith. And he chooses to try to compel them by painting this lofty, soaring picture of Jesus and who he is. And he paints this picture by way of comparison. He compares Jesus to different facets of the Hebrew faith, which is why we're calling the series Greater, because he was greater than the angels and the other messengers. He was greater than Moses and the law. We see that he's the great high priest we talked about a couple weeks ago. And this week, we see that he's the greatest sacrifice. Now, to appreciate the fact that Jesus is the greatest sacrifice, we need to understand a little bit about how the sacrificial system in the Old Testament worked. And I know that you might think to yourself, boy, this is a weird place to go on Easter, but hang with me, okay? We're going to get to where we're going, but we've got to move through here first. In the Old Testament, the way that you would be right with God, the way that you would have a good standing before God, in our New Testament vernacular, most of us probably think of it as being saved. So in the Old Testament, the way that you were saved, or really the way that you had right standing before God, is through the sacrificial system. In Leviticus, we're given 630 some odd laws, and you had to live your life trying to follow those as best you could. If you could follow them perfectly, then good news, God is happy with you. But just in case you fall short, which everyone but Jesus did, then there were sacrifices that you could make. So once a week, once a month, whatever your rhythm allowed, whatever your wealth allowed, the head of the household, the dad or the grandfather, would take a bull or a lamb or a goat or whatever the sins of that household required based on different parameters of sacrifices that we're not going to get into. But he would take an appropriate sacrifice to the local temple, and the priest would sacrifice this animal on your family's behalf. And as the animal was sacrificed, the father would lay his hands on the head of the bull or the lamb or the goat or whatever it was, and the sins of the family are symbolically transferred onto this animal that is now paying the penalty for your sins. And once you go through this ritual of sacrifice, now you're good. You and God are squared away. You're fine. All your past sins are forgiven. The problem with the animal sacrifice is it only covered your past sins. So if you planned on screwing up in the future, well, then you better plan on making some more sacrifices. And you would. So every week or month you had to go back and you had to make a new sacrifice for the fresh sins. And then once a year on the greatest day in the Hebrew calendar, on the day of atonement, the high priest would go into the tabernacle or into the temple, into the Holy of Holies in the very presence of God, offer a sacrifice for himself and for his sins, and then a sacrifice for the nation of Israel. And it was this system of sacrifices of sinning and repenting and offering sacrifice to give yourself right standing before God. It was this system of sacrifices, of sinning and repenting and offering sacrifice to make yourself, give yourself right standing before God. It was this system of sacrifices that kept you right before God, that kept you saved, right? And so in the Old Testament, they really focused a lot on doing the rituals the right way, on offering the sacrifice in the right way, of putting our hands in the right place. If you were here a few falls ago, we did a series called Feast, where we went through the Jewish festivals, and the biggest one is the Day of Atonement. We spent a whole Sunday morning on the pomp and the circumstance in the Day of Atonement, and when things are supposed to happen, and the ceremonial bath, and the robe that you're supposed to wear, and when this sacrifice happens, and who's allowed in this room, in this space, and it was all very choreographed and nuanced and detailed. And you see, that led them to this assumption in the Old Testament. In the Old Testament, they thought the rituals were the point. They thought the rituals were the point. If we can do everything just right, if I offer the sacrifice in the right way, if my priest is a good priest and he's doing it right, if the day of atonement goes well and that high priest performs his sacerdotal duties in the right way, then we're good. In the Old Testament, they thought that the rituals that they were following were the point. The problem is there's a little bit of Mr. Miyagi going on in these rituals. Now, I wanted to show you guys a clip from the 80s smash hit Karate Kid, but we can't. We're fancy now and we stream on YouTube and they would shut down our channel if we showed it, so we decided not to chance it. And now you'll be subjected to me describing to you a movie scene. So let's do this together. For those that don't know, Karate Kid is the predecessor to the really cruddy Cobra Kai that's on Netflix now and is a shadow of the former realities. But in Karate Kid, there's this great scene. There's a guy named, there's a little kid, or he's a teenager named Daniel, and he's getting bullied, okay? As a matter of fact, I just heard before the service started, and I said, oh, that's great. I'm going to use it in the sermon. We did communion two weeks ago, and a single guy was watching online, and he wanted to participate in communion, and the best he could muster up was a tortilla chip and a glass of wine. Great. He participated in communion with his family. I would lean into that like the author of Hebrews did and say, do you really think there's anything magical going on in the bread? I think it matters whether you use Welch's or like whatever, Summer Home. It doesn't matter. I don't even know if that's a wine. I'm a bourbon guy. Somebody in between services, somebody tell me a good wine to use there, and I'll see if I can remember it in the second service. There's nothing special going on in those elements. It's a sign of the things to come. It's pointing to the point that one day we will be gathered around the table of God, of the King of the universe, and we are adopted sons and daughters of the King, and we are invited into that fellowship with Jesus. It is a reminder of what Jesus did 2,000 years ago, and it's a reminder of what he will do, what he has promised to do in the future. Do you understand that even the behaviors that Scripture admonishes in you are designed to point to the point? That faithfulness and goodness and kindness and gentleness and meekness, that God doesn't implore you to be gentle for gentleness' sake. He implores you to be gentle because when you are different from the world that we live in, when you are so gentle that it's noticeable, it orients your heart towards Christ and other people who watch you walk in your gentleness are oriented towards Christ as well. That he asks you to be forgiving, not for the sake of being forgiving, not for forgiveness's sake, but for the sake that with radical forgiveness, we mirror Christ and orients our heart to him and other people are pointed to Jesus as a result of our forgiveness. Go down the list. Goodness, love, mercy, charity. All those behaviors that are prescribed in the New Testament, we're not prescribed them for the sake of the behavior, but so that our hearts would be oriented towards Jesus and other people would see that in us and want to know our Savior as well. Even our marriages, these things that we go through for our lives, we choose a life partner, we stay married, we love them, and even the most holy of marriages, it's a ritual to point to the point. The marriage is used over and over and over again in scripture as a picture of the way that Christ loves the church, that we are the bride of Christ. Pure, unadulterated, marital love between the most holy of people who love Christ only serves to show the world around them how Christ loves the church. Marriage itself is designed to point us to the point. We're still just waxing on and waxing off. Even, I would say to you, fighting your own sin nature within yourself, striving and failing and striving and failing and feeling never good enough is intentional to point you to the point so that you'll come to the end of yourself and admit, I need Christ. Even our striving against ourselves in sin is serving to point us to the point. Not to mention baptism, what we just did. People get concerned about the ritual. Did we do it right? We were in the bathroom changing afterwards and Kyle said, did my head go all the way under? And I said, you're good, man. It took. That doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. That's not the point. Whether or not we did the baptism right is not the point. The point is that it points to Christ. In Romans 6 it says in baptism we are buried with Christ in death and we are raised to walk in newness of life. That's why the early church did it on Easter because it's a symbol of Jesus being put in the grave and when Kyle Kyle goes under the water, he's being put in the grave too. And his former self is passing away. And when he rises up out of the water, he is washed clean. He is sprinkled pure by the blood of Christ. He raises to walk in newness of life in eternity with Jesus. It's a picture of Easter. It doesn't matter if we do it right. The point is not the ritual. The point is to point us to Christ. And speaking of Easter, Easter, more than any other day, points us to the point. Easter, more than any other day, points us to Christ. It is amazing to me, the victory that was won on Easter. It is amazing to me that when Mary went and she found the tomb and she heard the greatest line in the Bible from the angel, why do you search for the living among the dead? He is not living. Or he is not here, he is living just as he said. In that victory, Jesus conquered hell and Satan. Jesus conquered death for us. Jesus conquered disease for us. When we gather on Easter, we remember those of us who have lost loved ones in the last year or even further away than that. We are reminded that the last time we said goodbye to them was not goodbye forever. It was goodbye for now. Easter reminds us of that reality. Easter reminds us of the hope that we have. Because Scripture says, death, where are your shackles? Sin, where is your sting? Like it's been defeated. Jesus won that for us because Jesus died on the cross and left the tomb empty and went to heaven as our high priest and now prays for us because he won us that salvation. We get together on Easter and we remember that reality. And because he did that, my friend Kyle, his father watched him from heaven get baptized with his little granddaughter and with his wife sitting on the row and his daughter-in-law that he loved so much. He watched that and participated in that. And when Kyle goes to heaven one day, he's going to hug him. That was one on Easter. Do you understand? We don't have to fear what everybody else fears. We have a tremendous hope. That's why Pope John Paul II said, we do not give way to despair. We are the Easter people and hallelujah is our song. We praise God no matter what. It's an amazing thing that was won on Easter. And here's the bigger deal. Not only on Easter do we remember the victory that Jesus won and be grateful for what it did to us and ushering us into heaven and uniting us with him for all of eternity? But his victory over death is the greatest victory that's ever been won, but it's not the greatest one that will be won because Revelation tells us that Jesus is coming back on a white horse and he's coming back to wreck shop and he's gonna set up his new kingdom and his new earth where there will be no more weeping and no more crying and no more pain anymore for the former things have passed away. Jesus is going to come back and win that victory. One day when we don't have to ask why do shootings happen and why do bad things happen to good people and why do bad people seem to thrive? Jesus is going to come back and he's going to make all that make sense. As Christians, that is the promise that we cling to. That is our hope that will not put us to shame. That is what we usher others to. So even Easter, as we celebrate it, the point is not only the resurrection of Christ, but also the greatest victory that he will win. It's his seal on his promise. I kept that promise. I sent my son. He died for you. He conquered death. He resurrected. He ascended to the right hand of the Father. He prays for you. And one day he's coming back and he's going to make everything right. And so on Easter, we celebrate the promise that we remember that has been kept and we celebrate the promise that we look forward to him keeping. It's still pointing us to the point. As we celebrate Easter with our families, and we do all the things that we do, let us remember the victory that Christ won for us. Let us acknowledge that just like the Old Testament church, they were simply waxing on and waxing off, that the rituals and the things they did were simply designed to point them to Christ, that so it is with us as we exist as the New Testament church, that all the things he asks us to do and all the rituals he's installed and all the behaviors in our life and all the faith that he asks from us is really designed to point us to the point. And let us remember that on Easter, we don't just celebrate a victory won, but one that we know will be won in the future. Let's pray, and we'll continue to worship together. Father, we are so grateful to you. We're so grateful for your son. Thank you for sending him to pay the penalty for our sins. Lord, I pray that if there is somebody who doesn't know you, that this would be the morning when they decide that they want to. If there's someone who hasn't felt your forgiveness, let this be the day that they feel it. God, let us accept more and more that everything in our life is simply designed to point us back to Jesus. That everything we do at the church, everything that you encourage us to do together, all the ways that you encourage us to love, all the ways that you love us, all the things that you let us struggle with are designed, Father, to point us to our need for your Son. God, I pray that we would have the best Easter, not only reflecting on the victory that you've won, but on the one that you promised to win too. And it's in that returning Savior's name that we pray. Good morning and happy Easter. It's so good to see everybody. Thank you for joining us online. It's good to see a good crowd and Easter colors. I love Easter. It's my favorite day of the year. I love everything that it celebrates. It's such a victorious day. It celebrates not only the greatest victory ever won, but the greatest one to come. It gives us hope for a future. My favorite quote about Easter is actually from Pope John Paul II. He said, we do not give over, give ourselves over to despair. We are the Easter people and Alleluia is our song. And what a day to come together and celebrate our risen Savior and all that he won for us. As we do that, we are in the middle of our series called Greater, going through the book of Hebrews together, and we're going to continue right on with that here on Easter. So hopefully you've been able to follow along and you have kind of a loose awareness of what we've been talking about, but for the uninitiated, for those that got drugged here by friends or are watching in somebody's living room, just so that we all are caught up together. The book of Hebrews is a letter. We don't know who wrote it, but we do know that it was written to Jewish people who lived outside of Israel in a Greek context who had at some point in their life converted to Christianity. So they grew up as practicing Jews, practicing the faith of Judaism, and then at some point received the news about Jesus and his resurrection and placed their faith in Jesus and converted to Christianity. Because of that conversion, they faced persecution from within and without, from the Roman government and from their own community, both of whom were trying to encourage them in various ways to walk away from their newfound faith and to embrace their old way of life. And so the author of Hebrews writes this letter to those people, those converted Jews into Christians, to compel them to stay the course in their faith. And he chooses to try to compel them by painting this lofty, soaring picture of Jesus and who he is. And he paints this picture by way of comparison. He compares Jesus to different facets of the Hebrew faith, which is why we're calling the series Greater, because he was greater than the angels and the other messengers. He was greater than Moses and the law. We see that he's the great high priest we talked about a couple weeks ago. And this week, we see that he's the greatest sacrifice. Now, to appreciate the fact that Jesus is the greatest sacrifice, we need to understand a little bit about how the sacrificial system in the Old Testament worked. And I know that you might think to yourself, boy, this is a weird place to go on Easter, but hang with me, okay? We're going to get to where we're going, but we've got to move through here first. In the Old Testament, the way that you would be right with God, the way that you would have a good standing before God, in our New Testament vernacular, most of us probably think of it as being saved. So in the Old Testament, the way that you were saved, or really the way that you had right standing before God, is through the sacrificial system. In Leviticus, we're given 630 some odd laws, and you had to live your life trying to follow those as best you could. If you could follow them perfectly, then good news, God is happy with you. But just in case you fall short, which everyone but Jesus did, then there were sacrifices that you could make. So once a week, once a month, whatever your rhythm allowed, whatever your wealth allowed, the head of the household, the dad or the grandfather, would take a bull or a lamb or a goat or whatever the sins of that household required based on different parameters of sacrifices that we're not going to get into. But he would take an appropriate sacrifice to the local temple, and the priest would sacrifice this animal on your family's behalf. And as the animal was sacrificed, the father would lay his hands on the head of the bull or the lamb or the goat or whatever it was, and the sins of the family are symbolically transferred onto this animal that is now paying the penalty for your sins. And once you go through this ritual of sacrifice, now you're good. You and God are squared away. You're fine. All your past sins are forgiven. The problem with the animal sacrifice is it only covered your past sins. So if you planned on screwing up in the future, well, then you better plan on making some more sacrifices. And you would. So every week or month you had to go back and you had to make a new sacrifice for the fresh sins. And then once a year on the greatest day in the Hebrew calendar, on the day of atonement, the high priest would go into the tabernacle or into the temple, into the Holy of Holies in the very presence of God, offer a sacrifice for himself and for his sins, and then a sacrifice for the nation of Israel. And it was this system of sacrifices of sinning and repenting and offering sacrifice to give yourself right standing before God. It was this system of sacrifices, of sinning and repenting and offering sacrifice to make yourself, give yourself right standing before God. It was this system of sacrifices that kept you right before God, that kept you saved, right? And so in the Old Testament, they really focused a lot on doing the rituals the right way, on offering the sacrifice in the right way, of putting our hands in the right place. If you were here a few falls ago, we did a series called Feast, where we went through the Jewish festivals, and the biggest one is the Day of Atonement. We spent a whole Sunday morning on the pomp and the circumstance in the Day of Atonement, and when things are supposed to happen, and the ceremonial bath, and the robe that you're supposed to wear, and when this sacrifice happens, and who's allowed in this room, in this space, and it was all very choreographed and nuanced and detailed. And you see, that led them to this assumption in the Old Testament. In the Old Testament, they thought the rituals were the point. They thought the rituals were the point. If we can do everything just right, if I offer the sacrifice in the right way, if my priest is a good priest and he's doing it right, if the day of atonement goes well and that high priest performs his sacerdotal duties in the right way, then we're good. In the Old Testament, they thought that the rituals that they were following were the point. The problem is there's a little bit of Mr. Miyagi going on in these rituals. Now, I wanted to show you guys a clip from the 80s smash hit Karate Kid, but we can't. We're fancy now and we stream on YouTube and they would shut down our channel if we showed it, so we decided not to chance it. And now you'll be subjected to me describing to you a movie scene. So let's do this together. For those that don't know, Karate Kid is the predecessor to the really cruddy Cobra Kai that's on Netflix now and is a shadow of the former realities. But in Karate Kid, there's this great scene. There's a guy named, there's a little kid, or he's a teenager named Daniel, and he's getting bullied, okay? The kids are picking on him and he can't fend for himself and whatever, whatever. And so he finds this karate master named Mr. Miyagi. And he goes to Mr. Miyagi, and he says, will you train me? Teach me to do karate like you do karate. And Mr. Miyagi says, okay. But if you do karate, you got to do it all the way. You can't waver. If you do it, we'll squish you, he says. And Daniel's like, I'm in. And he goes, okay, great. And he puts a sponge in his hand and a rag in his hand, and he says, here's my cars. Wax on, wax off. Clean my cars. And he's like, what? And he goes, ah, no questions. You clean my cars. Daniel's like, all right, fine. So he starts cleaning the cars, right? And then the next scene over, he's like washing the car like this, and Miyagi sees him, and he's like, no, what are you doing? Wax on, and he takes his hand, and then wax off. And he moves it really intentionally. And he's like, what's the big deal with the waxing on and the waxing off? I'm cleaning the cars, right? And then he does this series of chores. He paints the fence, and he sands the floor, and he does all these repetitive motions. And it feels, for the first several weeks of of his training that Mr. Miyagi is really just using him for free labor, right? That he's just taking advantage of this kid's desire to learn karate and he's not actually learning anything. And then there's this great scene when Daniel gets ticked and he kind of confronts him. He's like, what's the deal? I want to learn karate and you're just making me do chores. And Mr. Miyagi's like, all right, wax on. And he's like, and he goes, no. And he takes his hand and he does it really intentionally. He goes, wax on. And then you hear Mr. Miyagi scream, hi, and he goes to punch him, right? And Daniel blocks the punch. And then he tries to punch him again and Daniel blocks the punch. And he's like, sand the floor and he blocks the kick. You know, paint the fence and he blocks the punch. And he's like, sand the floor, and he blocks the kick. You know, paint the fence, and he blocks the punch. And you realize in this moment, oh man, Mr. Miyagi really knows what he's doing. This is amazing. I'm all in on the karate master. This is like the smartest thing that happened in the 80s. And you can't believe it. And you're like, oh my gosh, all the things that he was doing, he was teaching him muscle memory. He was teaching him karate. Those were a form of what was to come. The waxing the floor wasn't the point. Waxing on wasn't the point. Sanding the fence wasn't the point. All the chores weren't the point. He was getting them to the point that he didn't understand yet. This is what's happening with the Old Testament rituals. They thought that the rituals were the point, that the cleaning of the actual floor, that the sanding the floor, the painting the fence, that that was the point. But they were really, through those rituals, getting in a much deeper reality. And the author of Hebrews actually writes about this reality and lays it out for them almost. I'm not willing to call it sarcastic and joking, but man what he's saying. He's saying, you guys went through these rituals all this time ago. And then he even comes out and he overtly says it. Those were shadows of the reality that was to come. Those rituals that you were doing that day of atonement was a shadow of the reality that was to come. It's not here yet. And then I love the way that he ends it. This is almost the sarcastic part for me. Maybe I just read my own personality into it. But it's like he leans in and he's like, did you really think the blood of bulls and goats is doing anything? Do you think there's anything magical going on in their blood? It's a symbol, guys. It doesn't make a difference. The ritual's not the point. And then he says this about Jesus. He says, those things weren't the point. They were a shadow of the realities to come. It's the reality of the ritual. And then he goes on and he says, and this is really the fulfillment of those rituals. This is why we did that. And he talks about Jesus in verses 11 through 14, when he writes, He says, that the high priest was pointing to our great high priest in Christ. You watched the sacrifices happen. You didn't realize that the sacrifice was a shadow of the reality that was going to come in Christ as he offered the ultimate sacrifices. And we've already acknowledged that the limited ability of the sacrifice of the animals was that they only covered the things that had happened in the past. But with the eternal sacrifice of Christ, you're not only forgiven for all the things you did up until the moment that you accept that sacrifice, but all the things that God knows you're going to do in the future, which is the remarkable thing about salvation. So he's saying that Jesus is the fulfillment of all of the rituals. And what we need to see is what he was trying to get them to see is that the real point of the rituals was to point to the point. Do you get the point? The real point of the rituals was to point to the point. Think about it. The point is Jesus. The law that they give him in the Old Testament, follow these rules and you can be okay with God. The point of those rules was never to make them okay with God. It was to show them their inability to ever earn their way into God's favor and so surrender to their need for God. The law was given so that we would acknowledge our need for Jesus. The sacrifices that he gives in the Old Testament, those point to the sacrifice of Christ one day. The role of the high priest, the imperfect high priest going into the Holy of Holies is a picture of Jesus as your high priest dying on the cross and then going to heaven and sitting at the right hand of God where we talked about a couple of weeks ago. He prays for you. He intercesses for you. He goes to the creator of the universe and he says, I have him. I have her. They're good. They can approach. He goes, he not only wins our salvation, but then he goes and he sits at the right hand of the throne of God and he ushers in our presence into the throne room so that anytime we want to, anywhere we are, we bow our heads and we say, dear God, and we are rushed right into the very throne room of God, into his presence, which is not a place that we would dare tread if we were not going in the name of Christ. That's what our high priest does for us. And what he wants them to see is that everything in the Old Testament, everything in your old way of life, the point of it is to point to the point. It's all pointing to Jesus. The prophets pointed to Jesus. The kingship of David points to Jesus. The priesthood of Melchizedek points to Jesus. All streams are running to Jesus. The point of everything is to point to Christ. And it would make sense to me if now you were thinking, okay, Nate, that's neat, but we don't live in the Old Testament. We don't do those rituals. So I'm glad I understand that, but what does that mean for me? I'm glad you asked. Don't you understand that we're still just waxing on and waxing off? Don't you understand that we're still just being Miyagi'd? That everything we do as a church is designed to point ourselves and others to the point? Don't you understand that everything we do as a church, as a church, everything we do is designed to point ourselves and others to the point. We come here and we gather together and we worship corporately. We sing praises to our God. Do you understand that that's a picture of heaven? That that's just this glimpse, just this sliver of our ability, the grace that God gives us to gather together with other people who are united in faith and come together as a body of faith and praise God to his throne. That that's a picture of what we're going to be doing in heaven. So that when we come and we praise God together, the point isn't to worship and be moved in your soul right now. The point is to understand that one day we will do this for all of eternity, that one day I won't just be singing next to the people I go to church with, but I will be singing with all saints for all of history. I will be praising next to Moses and David and my grandparents and Esther and Ruth and Naomi and all the heroes of our faith. We will come together and we will praise before the throne together. And what we do on Sunday morning is a shadow, a glimpse of the reality that is to come in heaven. We're pointing to the point. Don't you understand that when we take communion, it's not about the ritual? It's not about how we do it. It's not about if we dip it right or if we use the right bread. It's pointing to the point. Let us acknowledge that just like the Old Testament church, they were simply waxing on and waxing off, that the rituals and the things they did were simply designed to point them to Christ, that so it is with us as we exist as the New Testament church, that all the things he asks us to do and all the rituals he's installed and all the behaviors in our life and all the faith that he asks from us is really designed to point us to the point. And let us remember that on Easter, we don't just celebrate a victory won, but one that we know will be won in the future. Let's pray, and we'll continue to worship together. Father, we are so grateful to you. We're so grateful for your son. Thank you for sending him to pay the penalty for our sins. Lord, I pray that if there is somebody who doesn't know you, that this would be the morning when they decide that they want to. If there's someone who hasn't felt your forgiveness, let this be the day that they feel it. God, let us accept more and more that everything in our life is simply designed to point us back to Jesus. That everything we do at the church, everything that you encourage us to do together, all the ways that you encourage us to love, all the ways that you love us, all the things that you let us struggle with are designed, Father, to point us to our need for your Son. God, I pray that we would have the best Easter, not only reflecting on the victory that you've won, but on the one that you promised to win too. And it's in that returning Savior's name that we pray. Grace, this week there's a man named George Floyd who was killed by a police officer. George was a black man, and you can't help but think that his race was a white woman who, in a racially fueled fear, weaponized the black man's race against him in a threat. And those instances are the most recent that have come into the national conscience. But there are just more instances in a long string of events that have happened that have pointed to the fact that we live in a culture with simmering racial tension. We live in a place where racial inequality is real. And I didn't think it would be right to get up here and just start preaching about Acts as if those things hadn't happened this week. I didn't think it would be right to meet together as together as we can be on a Sunday morning now and not acknowledge those things and pray for the racial divide and the wounds in our country to heal. And I didn't think it would be right to start this Sunday as a church and not earnestly ask our God together, what can we do, what can grace do to be a part of healing this divide? What portions of it as a greatly and majorly lily-white congregation can we own? And how can we contribute to closing the divide that exists in our culture? So I wanted to take a minute as we begin and pray for George Floyd and his family and pray for the racial divide in our country and pray for wisdom, for grace, as we seek to find how the Lord would have us be an active part of the healing of these wounds. So would you please pray with me? Father, our hearts are broken that we live in a place where things like this happen. Our hearts are broken that these incidents are not isolated. They're just the ones that we see. We know that you see all the incidents. We know that you have seen all the injustice. And we know that your heart breaks over injustice far more than ours ever could. So Father, first we pray for your heart in the face of these things. Break ours with yours. Father, we pray for the family of George Floyd. We ask that you would bring a healing that only you could bring. We pray for the attitudes that underlie the fear of Amy Cooper. And ask that you would solve those and bring those to the fore so that we might confront them and deal with them with equanimity and with justice and with grace. And Father, we ask that you would guide the partners and the leadership of grace and show us how we are to contribute to closing this divide and healing these wounds. Show us the path forward as we grieve, Lord. In Jesus' name, amen. All right. This morning is part two of a sermon that I'm calling Early Church Distinctives. Last week was part one. Hopefully you have your notes and you've got them numbered one through three. This week is going to be four, five, six, and seven. And last week I opened up with a short fictional story, really a parable, about a boy that was firing arrows at a barn and the arrows would land in the midst of a sea of red and then he would walk up and paint a target around the arrow and go, look, I hit the bullseye. And we talked about how, you know, this happens and this is applicable in a lot of organizations and institutions. It's a good parable about the dangers of mission drift. And often we start things without even knowing what we're going for, without even knowing what the goal is, without even knowing what the target is. And so we are asking last week as a church, how do we know that we're hitting the target? Another way to think about it is if Jesus and Paul were to come into the church on a Sunday morning when that's allowed, would they look around grace and everything that we're doing and say, yeah, you guys are nailing it. This is exactly what you're supposed to be doing. This is the target that we painted for you. So last week we asked the question, how do we know that we're hitting that target? How do we know that what we're doing as Grace is right? That Sunday mornings and small groups and children's ministry and student ministry and the philanthropic ministries that we do, how do we know that all that is right and good? Well, in Acts chapter 2, verses 42 through 47, we have a seminal passage that defines the early church. It paints the target for us. It shows us these are the things that the early church was characterized by. What's going on in the passage is Jesus has gone into heaven. He's left the disciples with the keys to the kingdom. They've received the Holy Spirit. They went out and they preached to thousands of people this gospel of repentance. Repent of who you thought Jesus was when you killed him and accept and walk in faith in the fact that Jesus and when he challenged them to repentance, it says about 3,000 were added to their number. And then those 3,000 formed the church. And right after that, we get Acts 2, 42 through 47, and it tells us the very things that defined the church. So last week, we looked at the first three distinctives that we see as defining the early church. This week, I want to look at the next four, four, five, six, and seven. And we said last week, there's different ways to group these together. You could pull out four distinctives or nine, but we're doing seven. And so last week we talked about the fact that they were devoted to the apostles' teaching, meaning they were eager learners. They were devoted to fellowship, meaning they were devoted to Christ-centered time together, and they were devoted to prayers, meaning that they were committed to the spiritual disciplines that they expressed in that day. So this week, as we continue to ask, how do we know if we're doing it right? What does God expect of his church? I want to continue to look at these distinctives that define the early church. By way of review, I wanted to take a minute and read the breaking of bread at the prayers. This week I want to start out by looking at that phrase that they sold all that they had in common and gave to any who had need. And we want to sum that up by saying that the fourth distinctive, if you're keeping your list there, is that they were known for generosity. They were known for their generosity. And it's interesting what's happening in this passage because what's literally happening is as the church is formed, everybody is selling whatever they have and giving it to the church leadership and saying, here, this is for the greater good. You guys use it for whatever you need to use it for. Obviously, my family's going to have some needs, but we trust you to provide for those. Here's everything that we own. Please use it to provide for everyone here, which is a super high bar. That's really daunting. Can you imagine if when we had our new members class at Grace, when we did Discover Grace and we talked all about Grace and who we are, and then we got to the end of it and it was like, okay, if you want to be a partner, here are the requirements. You know, you need to commit to Sunday morning attendance. You should be a believer. We'd like to see you in a small group. Also, small thing, if you could just kind of sell everything that you have and write a check to the elders, we'll take it from here. That would be a pretty tough sell. That's a pretty tall order. But to understand what's happening here, we need to feel the freedom to apply the principle and not necessarily the practice, because the principle is far more important. First, we need to understand what's happening in ancient Israel, in Israel at the time of Christ. Israel is what we would think of as a third world country. There's lots of joblessness. There's lots of poverty. There's lots of hunger. There's lots of suffering. There's no medical system really to speak of. And so suffering and need and want in Jerusalem was great. And while it was great, there was no infrastructure to provide for those who had fallen through the cracks of society. And what we understand is that God has intentionally designed the institution of the church to undergird society as a safety net to catch those who have fallen through the cracks of familial care. God first assigns to care for others. He first assigns family to care for family. This is why over and over again in Scripture, God makes a point of saying that if you love me, if you want to express true religion, then you'll care for the widows and the orphans. We see this in James in the New Testament, that true religion is to care for the widows and the orphans. We see it in Isaiah in the Old Testament, where God says, if you really want to please me, then plead the cause of the fatherless and take up the case of the widow. And what he's saying there is, and even in Deuteronomy when he says, look out for the sojourners, for the aliens, for the ones that don't have a family and can't support themselves, what he's saying in all that is, the church needs to serve in society as a safety net to care for those who fall through the cracks of familial care. We're supposed to be there and be helping them. And when there is a need, we are supposed to meet it. God has designed the church as an institutional safety net for society. And so in that time, there was no government. There was no Medicare. There was no welfare. There was no food stamps. There was no health care. There was none of that. And so the church was the only hope for the person who didn't have a family and was in need and couldn't support themselves. But now in our culture, thankfully, we have another safety net, which is the government. We do have a societal infrastructure to watch out for people who fall through the cracks of familial care. But still, the church undergirds all of that, and people who cannot be cared for by their family and cannot be cared for by the government, God looks at us, the church, and says, now you, you care for them. So we're still there, and it's still our responsibility, which is why the point from this part of the passage is that we need to be generous. We need to be conduits of God's generosity. We need to have a grieving heart for those who hurt and reach out to help those who can't help themselves. We need to be glad providers for those that are not provided for by their family or provided for by the government. We need to rally around them and be generous in spirits and be conduits of God's generosity. Another way to think of it perhaps is like this. When I became a senior pastor, I learned eventually about a thing called a designated giving fund. I'd really never heard of that before. It might shock you guys to know that I'm not a financial titan. I don't really know all the ins and outs of all that stuff. It's all news to me. I just try to spend less than what I make. That's pretty much it. But I found out that there's these things called designated giving funds. And how this works is you have money and you give a portion of that money to this fund that a company or an individual manages. And a lot of people will give money to this individual and they manage all the money in a fund. And that money is earmarked for charitable donations, charitable causes. And whoever you give your money to, they just sit on it and they hold it for however long you want to. And then when something pricks your heart, when something touches you, when you see a need that you'd like to meet, you pick up the phone or you type the email and you let the person managing your money know, hey, I would like you to send this much money to this person because they need it. This matters to me. I'd like you to allocate my resources to that person or that institution for those people. That's how a designated giving fund works fundamentally. And what it's made me realize is that we're all God's designated giving funds. That's what stewardship is. We've heard about this idea of stewardship before, that everything we have is God's and not our own. We've heard about that. But the more I thought about it this week, I've realized we're all God's designated giving funds. He allocates a portion of money to us. He entrusts it to us. And every now and again, he picks up the phone or he writes the email and he taps us on the shoulder and he says, hey, this thing matters to me. I'd like you to allocate some of those resources to them. I'd like you to allocate some of those resources to these people. That's the principle of what's happening here in Acts chapter 2, is they're expressing the Lord's generosity. And I think increasingly, and I know that that's a tall order, and I know that you may be very far away from viewing everything you have as really belonging to God. And that's, I think, a progressive revelation as we understand God. But I think one of the marks of spiritual maturity in a church and in an individual is when the church and when the person understands that we're really just designated giving funds for God. He's allocated a portion of his resources to us as individuals and to us as a church. And every now and again, he taps us on the shoulder and he says, hey, this matters to me. I'd like you to shift some of those resources over there to them. And that's how we're to serve. It's the mark of the church to be generous. The fifth distinctive that I see in this text is that they were committed to gathering. It says they gathered day by day in the temple courts. It's this old school way of church. You know, when I grew up, we were there every time the doors were open. We went Sunday morning, we went Sunday night, we went Wednesday night, every week. That was the deal. The doors were open, we were there. That's kind of old school church. Now, increasingly, if someone is a regular church attender, it means they come to church maybe twice a month. But the early church was committed to the gathering. It mattered to them. It mattered to them to come together when they were able to be in the temple learning and praising and fellowshipping together. The early church intuitively and instinctively understood the power and efficacy of being around one another, the power and the efficacy of the gathering. This is why in Hebrews we're told to not forsake the assembling of ourselves together. Because there's something special about being in the same place. And if nothing else, that's what this time of pandemic and isolation has taught us. Across the board, across the country, almost universally, church engagement and virtual attendance is declining. And as we've talked about that as a staff, and I've talked about that with the elders, I've just made the point that, you know, online church, this ability to participate in church in our sweatpants and the comfort of our own home, that's been a thing for at least 15 years, maybe longer. And there's a reason why it hasn't taken off. There's a reason why it hasn't overtaken in-person church. Because even now in the 21st century, we understand that there's a power and an efficacy that's difficult to capture in simply being together, in experiencing the teaching together, in laughing together, in and worshiping together and sharing together in the lobby, we understand that that is important. It's why at Grace, if you do come to a Discover Grace class, that one of the things we do ask our partners to commit to is to prioritize Sunday morning service. Because we believe that the gathering matters. And I can't wait until we are able to gather again. It's a distinctive of the early church and it ought to define our church. The sixth distinctive is the one that, of all of them, probably fires me up the most. I get so excited about this, and I think that it defines the early church. They were defined by communion and community. They were defined by communion and community. We see in verse 42 that they were devoted to the breaking of bread. And then again in 46 that they gathered in one another's homes and they broke bread together. It happens two times. And then all throughout this passage, we see they, they, they, collective, collective, collective. It's always about others. And the church is a fundamentally communal institution. It is fundamentally involved with others. I've said often it is impossible to live out the Christian life on an island. It is impossible to grow closer to Jesus void of the influence of others in your life. We absolutely, our souls need to be surrounded by godly Christian community. That's why at Grace, our mission statement is to connect people to Jesus and to connect people to people because we believe that we cannot deepen our connection with Jesus void of connections with others. And I believe this so fervently that I would say to you, if you're listening this morning and you're not sure that you have Christian community in your life, ignore everything else that I'm saying. Put it all on the back burner. Just take it and set it aside for a later date and get Christian community in your life. Stop right now. Quit listening to me and pray that God would provide for you a community of faith who supports you, who love you, who have permission to tell you the truth about yourself and to tell you what Jesus says about you. We desperately need Christian community in our life. And the early church was a communal thing, and that persists to this day. But it wasn't just about community. It was about communion. We see that phrase, the breaking of bread, and we automatically think that this is an expression of community and hospitality, and it is. And for all of history, for all of history, that has been how we've expressed hospitality. Food has been the fundamental way that we've expressed community. Once you get to know somebody a little bit, maybe you have a common activity or something, but eventually you're going to say, hey, let's grab lunch. Let's get the wives together and let's go to dinner. Let's get the families together and y'all come over. And increasingly that means we go somewhere and we experience a food together, but the most intimate time, the most special times are when people are invited over to the home. When you invite people into your home, there's a special care taken. You clean up the house. You let them know that you care about them, that they matter to you. You try to think of the special thing that they like, of the appetizer that they went nuts over the last time, of the dessert that you can remember in conversation that they said they like. If you're making steaks and there's somebody who doesn't like steak, you make sure and you have chicken to make them feel thought for and cared for. You make sure that there's something for their kids so that they know that their kid is important to you as well. There's this special power of hospitality, of welcoming people into our homes and expressing community in that way. And when the tradition of communion started, that's where it started. It started in someone's home as Jesus and the disciples sat around and broke bread together. They sat around and they were having a meal together. They were expressing community. It was the Passover supper. And you know, we observe communion in our churches. Most churches observe it like grace does. At grace, we do it once a month in the service. The elders stand on either side at the end of the sermon. I'll go through the story of communion and when it started and we'll have a particular thought that we go with. Then we spend some time in prayer and then we line up and we get we get the bread, and we dip it, and we go back to our seats, and it's an austere, respectful time, and that's right and good. But communion didn't start that way. Communion started in community. Communion started around a table. When Jesus took the bread, and he looked at the disciples, and and he broke it and he began to hand it out. And this was not an unusual practice. Every home didn't have a knife. The way that you serve bread was to take the loaf and tear off a portion of it and give it to your guests. So what Jesus did was not a new thing. This wasn't unusual to the disciples or anyone else who could have seen it. It was a ubiquitous, common part of the meal. And in this moment, Jesus takes the thing that we do every time we express community and he imbues it with purpose. And he says, every time you do this, do what? Line up in church and get in the line and tear off the bread and dip it in the wine and spend some time praying? No, not that. Every time you do this, every time you gather in community with me as your focus and you break bread, you serve the bread to the people who are in your house. This common activity that was mundane until this moment. Jesus says, every time you do this from now on, I want you to remember me. I want you to remember that I'm the bread, that I'm the bread of life, that my body was broken for you. Similarly, he takes the wine and he pours it. It's a totally common mundane activity. It happens in every dinner party ever where the host takes the glasses and pours the drink. And Jesus says, whenever you do this, whenever you do what? Gather in church and dip the bread in the wine? No, whenever you experience community together and when you serve the drinks, I want you to stop and remember me and feel that and see that as my blood that is poured out for you. Remember my crucifixion and that I am the tie that binds here and that I am what brings you in common with one another and that I am what reconciles you with the heavenly Father. Remember that. Communion didn't start in church buildings. It started at dinner tables. It started in community. And Jesus took these mundane expressions that are a part of every communal gathering around the table, and he said, from now on, when you do these things, don't just let them be a passive thing where you just serve the bread and you serve the drinks and you move on. I want you to stop and I want you to remember me. That's communion. Communion is always an expression of community. Communion always draws us into community and community should always focus on communion. So I think the challenge for us at Grace, who love community very much, we're real good at community. That's one of my favorite things about this church. We love having people over. We love getting together. But the challenge for us is when we do, when that bread is served and when it's broken, when the drinks are poured, it is right and good and obedient to pause and to pray and to say, Jesus, thank you that you are this bread. Thank you that you are this drink. Thank you that you make tonight possible and that you make our relationship with you possible. We're having fun here tonight, Jesus, but we want to pause and we want to say thank you for making this possible and we want to remember you because that's the instruction of communion. Not once a month when you're in church, come to the front and take the bread and dip it in the wine. That is a shadow. That is a mimicry of the actual communion. And it is right and good to do it in church. But it is forgetful and wrong if we don't do it together in community. So let the challenge be to grace as we commune, as we gather, as we express hospitality and we all begin to fling our doors back open and have people over. Can we please take a moment in those times and do things in remembrance of Christ and make communion more a part of our community. Finally, the seventh distinctive is that this church had a contagious joy. I want to read for you the last portion of scripture so that you kind of know what I'm talking about. It says, They gathered together every day. They invited people into their homes. It's not a stretch to think that they would just invite their neighbors in too because there's a meal and you should come have fun with us. They gathered in the temple courts. They pooled their resources and gave to anyone who had need. No doubt that brought people in who had need, who experienced this genuine community and love for the first time in their life. And then in all of that, as they met with glad and happy hearts, they praised their God and it said that they won favor with all the people. Not just the people of the church, but the people around them, which means that the people of Jerusalem at large began to take notice of this infectious community of joy that was the early church. And because they began to take notice of that, because they won favor with the people surrounding them simply by being an expression of the church and exuding that contagious joy, because people saw that, this passage ends with, and the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. Their contagious and infectious joy led to the salvation of souls. It's really interesting to me that two weeks ago I talked in Acts 2 about the fundamental and foundational repentance of the church. It's a confession that I've been wrong about who I thought Jesus was and I'm going to walk in the belief that he is who he says he is. And out of that confession and repentance, 3,000 people were added to that number. And now in Acts 2, 42 through 47, we see more people being added to their numbers. And the confession and repentance is what drew people in at the beginning, but now at this point in the church, what's now drawing people in? Now what's drawing people in is the favor that their infectious joy is winning with all people. Now what we're seeing is the church cranking on all cylinders. We're seeing the results of what happens when people are devoted to the apostles' teaching and are eager learners, when they're devoted to fellowship in Christ and their time together, when they're defined by community and communion, when they're known for their generosity, when they're experiencing joy, and all of that is working together to cause the people of Jerusalem to look at the church and go, what's going on over there? That's different. I want to be a part of that. That's why when we have Grace's big night out, whenever we can do that again, I cannot wait. I always tell Compass Rose where we have them. They say, do you want to just rent it out? Should we shut it down and just invite Grace people? I always say, no way. I want the other folks of Raleigh to see our community because I believe our community is infectious. This is how the church ought to work. This is how we draw people in. And I believe, Grace, I absolutely do, that even though we are in a time of trial right now because we can't meet together, that as soon as we can fling the doors open and as we move forward, I think grace is going to be stronger than it ever has. And I think if we will commit ourselves to these seven distinctives, that if we will be eager learners, that if we will devote ourselves to Christ-centered time together, that if we will be known for our generosity, committed to spiritual disciplines, if we will be committed to the gathering, if we will see the importance of community and communion, I think if we will do all those things, it will produce in us an infectious and contagious joy that the people of Raleigh will notice and come to. And I hope that's what we will be. I hope that we will be a church in the 21st century that embodies all the distinctives of the church of the first century. And I'm so excited to see where we get to go from here when this season of quarantine is over. Let me pray for us. Father, you are so good to us. We can't fathom how you love us. We can't fathom how you look out for us. We are collectively thrilled that we get to be participants in your church, in your kingdom, in your bride that you came to rescue. Thank you for Jesus, who is the tie that binds us together and reconciles us to you. God, I pray that we would be every bit as unflinchingly the church in the 21st century as they were in the first century. Give us boldness to go where you would have us go. And it's interesting what's happening in this passage because what's literally happening is as the church is formed, everybody is selling whatever they have and giving it to the church leadership and saying, here, this is for the greater good. You guys use it for whatever you need to use it for. Obviously, my family's going to have some needs, but we trust you to provide for those. Here's everything that we own. Please use it to provide for everyone here, which is a super high bar. That's really daunting. Can you imagine if when we had our new members class at Grace, when we did Discover Grace and we talked all about Grace and who we are, and then we got to the end of it and it was like, okay, if you want to be a partner, here are the requirements. You know, you need to commit to Sunday morning attendance. You should be a believer. We'd like to see you in a small group. Also, small thing, if you could just kind of sell everything that you have and write a check to the elders, we'll take it from here. That would be a pretty tough sell. That's a pretty tall order. But to understand what's happening here, we need to feel the freedom to apply the principle and not necessarily the practice, because the principle is far more important. First, we need to understand what's happening in ancient Israel, in Israel at the time of Christ. Israel is what we would think of as a third world country. There's lots of joblessness. There's lots of poverty. There's lots of hunger. There's lots of suffering. There's no medical system really to speak of. And so suffering and need and want in Jerusalem was great. And while it was great, there was no infrastructure to provide for those who had fallen through the cracks of society. And what we understand is that God has intentionally designed the institution of the church to undergird society as a safety net to catch those who have fallen through the cracks of familial care. God first assigns to care for others. He first assigns family to care for family. This is why over and over again in Scripture, God makes a point of saying that if you love me, if you want to express true religion, then you'll care for the widows and the orphans. We see this in James in the New Testament, that true religion is to care for the widows and the orphans. We see it in Isaiah in the Old Testament, where God says, if you really want to please me, then plead the cause of the fatherless and take up the case of the widow. And what he's saying there is, and even in Deuteronomy when he says, look out for the sojourners, for the aliens, for the ones that don't have a family and can't support themselves, what he's saying in all that is, the church needs to serve in society as a safety net to care for those who fall through the cracks of familial care. We're supposed to be there and be helping them. And when there is a need, we are supposed to meet it. God has designed the church as an institutional safety net for society. And so in that time, there was no government. There was no Medicare. There was no welfare. There was no food stamps. There was no health care. There was none of that. And so the church was the only hope for the person who didn't have a family and was in need and couldn't support themselves. But now in our culture, thankfully, we have another safety net, which is the government. We do have a societal infrastructure to watch out for people who fall through the cracks of familial care. But still, the church undergirds all of that, and people who cannot be cared for by their family and cannot be cared for by the government, God looks at us, the church, and says, now you, you care for them. So we're still there, and it's still our responsibility, which is why the point from this part of the passage is that we need to be generous. We need to be conduits of God's generosity. We need to have a grieving heart for those who hurt and reach out to help those who can't help themselves. We need to be glad providers for those that are not provided for by their family or provided for by the government. We need to rally around them and be generous in spirits and be conduits of God's generosity. Another way to think of it perhaps is like this. When I became a senior pastor, I learned eventually about a thing called a designated giving fund. I'd really never heard of that before. It might shock you guys to know that I'm not a financial titan. I don't really know all the ins and outs of all that stuff. It's all news to me. I just try to spend less than what I make. That's pretty much it. But I found out that there's these things called designated giving funds. And how this works is you have money and you give a portion of that money to this fund that a company or an individual manages. And a lot of people will give money to this individual and they manage all the money in a fund. And that money is earmarked for charitable donations, charitable causes. And whoever you give your money to, they just sit on it and they hold it for however long you want to. And then when something pricks your heart, when something touches you, when you see a need that you'd like to meet, you pick up the phone or you type the email and you let the person managing your money know, hey, I would like you to send this much money to this person because they need it. This matters to me. I'd like you to allocate my resources to that person or that institution for those people. That's how a designated giving fund works fundamentally. And what it's made me realize is that we're all God's designated giving funds. That's what stewardship is. We've heard about this idea of stewardship before, that everything we have is God's and not our own. We've heard about that. But the more I thought about it this week, I've realized we're all God's designated giving funds. He allocates a portion of money to us. He entrusts it to us. And every now and again, he picks up the phone or he writes the email and he taps us on the shoulder and he says, hey, this thing matters to me. I'd like you to allocate some of those resources to them. I'd like you to allocate some of those resources to these people. That's the principle of what's happening here in Acts chapter 2, is they're expressing the Lord's generosity. And I think increasingly, and I know that that's a tall order, and I know that you may be very far away from viewing everything you have as really belonging to God. And that's, I think, a progressive revelation as we understand God. But I think one of the marks of spiritual maturity in a church and in an individual is when the church and when the person understands that we're really just designated giving funds for God. He's allocated a portion of his resources to us as individuals and to us as a church. And every now and again, he taps us on the shoulder and he says, hey, this matters to me. I'd like you to shift some of those resources over there to them. And that's how we're to serve. It's the mark of the church to be generous. The fifth distinctive that I see in this text is that they were committed to gathering. It says they gathered day by day in the temple courts. It's this old school way of church. You know, when I grew up, we were there every time the doors were open. We went Sunday morning, we went Sunday night, we went Wednesday night, every week. That was the deal. The doors were open, we were there. That's kind of old school church. Now, increasingly, if someone is a regular church attender, it means they come to church maybe twice a month. But the early church was committed to the gathering. It mattered to them. It mattered to them to come together when they were able to be in the temple learning and praising and fellowshipping together. The early church intuitively and instinctively understood the power and efficacy of being around one another, the power and the efficacy of the gathering. This is why in Hebrews we're told to not forsake the assembling of ourselves together. Because there's something special about being in the same place. And if nothing else, that's what this time of pandemic and isolation has taught us. Across the board, across the country, almost universally, church engagement and virtual attendance is declining. And as we've talked about that as a staff, and I've talked about that with the elders, I've just made the point that, you know, online church, this ability to participate in church in our sweatpants and the comfort of our own home, that's been a thing for at least 15 years, maybe longer. And there's a reason why it hasn't taken off. There's a reason why it hasn't overtaken in-person church. Because even now in the 21st century, we understand that there's a power and an efficacy that's difficult to capture in simply being together, in experiencing the teaching together, in laughing together, in and worshiping together and sharing together in the lobby, we understand that that is important. It's why at Grace, if you do come to a Discover Grace class, that one of the things we do ask our partners to commit to is to prioritize Sunday morning service. Because we believe that the gathering matters. And I can't wait until we are able to gather again. It's a distinctive of the early church and it ought to define our church. The sixth distinctive is the one that, of all of them, probably fires me up the most. I get so excited about this, and I think that it defines the early church. They were defined by communion and community. They were defined by communion and community. We see in verse 42 that they were devoted to the breaking of bread. And then again in 46 that they gathered in one another's homes and they broke bread together. It happens two times. And then all throughout this passage, we see they, they, they, collective, collective, collective. It's always about others. And the church is a fundamentally communal institution. It is fundamentally involved with others. I've said often it is impossible to live out the Christian life on an island. It is impossible to grow closer to Jesus void of the influence of others in your life. We absolutely, our souls need to be surrounded by godly Christian community. That's why at Grace, our mission statement is to connect people to Jesus and to connect people to people because we believe that we cannot deepen our connection with Jesus void of connections with others. And I believe this so fervently that I would say to you, if you're listening this morning and you're not sure that you have Christian community in your life, ignore everything else that I'm saying. Put it all on the back burner. Just take it and set it aside for a later date and get Christian community in your life. Stop right now. Quit listening to me and pray that God would provide for you a community of faith who supports you, who love you, who have permission to tell you the truth about yourself and to tell you what Jesus says about you. We desperately need Christian community in our life. And the early church was a communal thing, and that persists to this day. But it wasn't just about community. It was about communion. We see that phrase, the breaking of bread, and we automatically think that this is an expression of community and hospitality, and it is. And for all of history, for all of history, that has been how we've expressed hospitality. Food has been the fundamental way that we've expressed community. Once you get to know somebody a little bit, maybe you have a common activity or something, but eventually you're going to say, hey, let's grab lunch. Let's get the wives together and let's go to dinner. Let's get the families together and y'all come over. And increasingly that means we go somewhere and we experience a food together, but the most intimate time, the most special times are when people are invited over to the home. When you invite people into your home, there's a special care taken. You clean up the house. You let them know that you care about them, that they matter to you. You try to think of the special thing that they like, of the appetizer that they went nuts over the last time, of the dessert that you can remember in conversation that they said they like. If you're making steaks and there's somebody who doesn't like steak, you make sure and you have chicken to make them feel thought for and cared for. You make sure that there's something for their kids so that they know that their kid is important to you as well. There's this special power of hospitality, of welcoming people into our homes and expressing community in that way. And when the tradition of communion started, that's where it started. It started in someone's home as Jesus and the disciples sat around and broke bread together. They sat around and they were having a meal together. They were expressing community. It was the Passover supper. And you know, we observe communion in our churches. Most churches observe it like grace does. At grace, we do it once a month in the service. The elders stand on either side at the end of the sermon. I'll go through the story of communion and when it started and we'll have a particular thought that we go with. Then we spend some time in prayer and then we line up and we get we get the bread, and we dip it, and we go back to our seats, and it's an austere, respectful time, and that's right and good. But communion didn't start that way. Communion started in community. Communion started around a table. When Jesus took the bread, and he looked at the disciples, and and he broke it and he began to hand it out. And this was not an unusual practice. Every home didn't have a knife. The way that you serve bread was to take the loaf and tear off a portion of it and give it to your guests. So what Jesus did was not a new thing. This wasn't unusual to the disciples or anyone else who could have seen it. It was a ubiquitous, common part of the meal. And in this moment, Jesus takes the thing that we do every time we express community and he imbues it with purpose. And he says, every time you do this, do what? Line up in church and get in the line and tear off the bread and dip it in the wine and spend some time praying? No, not that. Every time you do this, every time you gather in community with me as your focus and you break bread, you serve the bread to the people who are in your house. This common activity that was mundane until this moment. Jesus says, every time you do this from now on, I want you to remember me. I want you to remember that I'm the bread, that I'm the bread of life, that my body was broken for you. Similarly, he takes the wine and he pours it. It's a totally common mundane activity. It happens in every dinner party ever where the host takes the glasses and pours the drink. And Jesus says, whenever you do this, whenever you do what? Gather in church and dip the bread in the wine? No, whenever you experience community together and when you serve the drinks, I want you to stop and remember me and feel that and see that as my blood that is poured out for you. Remember my crucifixion and that I am the tie that binds here and that I am what brings you in common with one another and that I am what reconciles you with the heavenly Father. Remember that. Communion didn't start in church buildings. It started at dinner tables. It started in community. And Jesus took these mundane expressions that are a part of every communal gathering around the table, and he said, from now on, when you do these things, don't just let them be a passive thing where you just serve the bread and you serve the drinks and you move on. I want you to stop and I want you to remember me. That's communion. Communion is always an expression of community. Communion always draws us into community and community should always focus on communion. So I think the challenge for us at Grace, who love community very much, we're real good at community. That's one of my favorite things about this church. We love having people over. We love getting together. But the challenge for us is when we do, when that bread is served and when it's broken, when the drinks are poured, it is right and good and obedient to pause and to pray and to say, Jesus, thank you that you are this bread. Thank you that you are this drink. Thank you that you make tonight possible and that you make our relationship with you possible. We're having fun here tonight, Jesus, but we want to pause and we want to say thank you for making this possible and we want to remember you because that's the instruction of communion. Not once a month when you're in church, come to the front and take the bread and dip it in the wine. That is a shadow. That is a mimicry of the actual communion. And it is right and good to do it in church. But it is forgetful and wrong if we don't do it together in community. So let the challenge be to grace as we commune, as we gather, as we express hospitality and we all begin to fling our doors back open and have people over. Can we please take a moment in those times and do things in remembrance of Christ and make communion more a part of our community. Finally, the seventh distinctive is that this church had a contagious joy. I want to read for you the last portion of scripture so that you kind of know what I'm talking about. It says, They gathered together every day. They invited people into their homes. It's not a stretch to think that they would just invite their neighbors in too because there's a meal and you should come have fun with us. They gathered in the temple courts. They pooled their resources and gave to anyone who had need. No doubt that brought people in who had need, who experienced this genuine community and love for the first time in their life. And then in all of that, as they met with glad and happy hearts, they praised their God and it said that they won favor with all the people. Not just the people of the church, but the people around them, which means that the people of Jerusalem at large began to take notice of this infectious community of joy that was the early church. And because they began to take notice of that, because they won favor with the people surrounding them simply by being an expression of the church and exuding that contagious joy, because people saw that, this passage ends with, and the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. Their contagious and infectious joy led to the salvation of souls. It's really interesting to me that two weeks ago I talked in Acts 2 about the fundamental and foundational repentance of the church. It's a confession that I've been wrong about who I thought Jesus was and I'm going to walk in the belief that he is who he says he is. And out of that confession and repentance, 3,000 people were added to that number. And now in Acts 2, 42 through 47, we see more people being added to their numbers. And the confession and repentance is what drew people in at the beginning, but now at this point in the church, what's now drawing people in? Now what's drawing people in is the favor that their infectious joy is winning with all people. Now what we're seeing is the church cranking on all cylinders. We're seeing the results of what happens when people are devoted to the apostles' teaching and are eager learners, when they're devoted to fellowship in Christ and their time together, when they're defined by community and communion, when they're known for their generosity, when they're experiencing joy, and all of that is working together to cause the people of Jerusalem to look at the church and go, what's going on over there? That's different. I want to be a part of that. That's why when we have Grace's big night out, whenever we can do that again, I cannot wait. I always tell Compass Rose where we have them. They say, do you want to just rent it out? Should we shut it down and just invite Grace people? I always say, no way. I want the other folks of Raleigh to see our community because I believe our community is infectious. This is how the church ought to work. This is how we draw people in. And I believe, Grace, I absolutely do, that even though we are in a time of trial right now because we can't meet together, that as soon as we can fling the doors open and as we move forward, I think grace is going to be stronger than it ever has. And I think if we will commit ourselves to these seven distinctives, that if we will be eager learners, that if we will devote ourselves to Christ-centered time together, that if we will be known for our generosity, committed to spiritual disciplines, if we will be committed to the gathering, if we will see the importance of community and communion, I think if we will do all those things, it will produce in us an infectious and contagious joy that the people of Raleigh will notice and come to. And I hope that's what we will be. I hope that we will be a church in the 21st century that embodies all the distinctives of the church of the first century. And I'm so excited to see where we get to go from here when this season of quarantine is over. Let me pray for us. Father, you are so good to us. We can't fathom how you love us. We can't fathom how you look out for us. We are collectively thrilled that we get to be participants in your church, in your kingdom, in your bride that you came to rescue. Thank you for Jesus, who is the tie that binds us together and reconciles us to you. God, I pray that we would be every bit as unflinchingly the church in the 21st century as they were in the first century. Give us boldness to go where you would have us go. Give us zeal and energy to get there. Give us a devotion to you to sustain us. Give us an infectious joy to draw others in. It's in your son's name we pray. Amen.
Grace, this week there's a man named George Floyd who was killed by a police officer. George was a black man, and you can't help but think that his race was a white woman who, in a racially fueled fear, weaponized the black man's race against him in a threat. And those instances are the most recent that have come into the national conscience. But there are just more instances in a long string of events that have happened that have pointed to the fact that we live in a culture with simmering racial tension. We live in a place where racial inequality is real. And I didn't think it would be right to get up here and just start preaching about Acts as if those things hadn't happened this week. I didn't think it would be right to meet together as together as we can be on a Sunday morning now and not acknowledge those things and pray for the racial divide and the wounds in our country to heal. And I didn't think it would be right to start this Sunday as a church and not earnestly ask our God together, what can we do, what can grace do to be a part of healing this divide? What portions of it as a greatly and majorly lily-white congregation can we own? And how can we contribute to closing the divide that exists in our culture? So I wanted to take a minute as we begin and pray for George Floyd and his family and pray for the racial divide in our country and pray for wisdom, for grace, as we seek to find how the Lord would have us be an active part of the healing of these wounds. So would you please pray with me? Father, our hearts are broken that we live in a place where things like this happen. Our hearts are broken that these incidents are not isolated. They're just the ones that we see. We know that you see all the incidents. We know that you have seen all the injustice. And we know that your heart breaks over injustice far more than ours ever could. So Father, first we pray for your heart in the face of these things. Break ours with yours. Father, we pray for the family of George Floyd. We ask that you would bring a healing that only you could bring. We pray for the attitudes that underlie the fear of Amy Cooper. And ask that you would solve those and bring those to the fore so that we might confront them and deal with them with equanimity and with justice and with grace. And Father, we ask that you would guide the partners and the leadership of grace and show us how we are to contribute to closing this divide and healing these wounds. Show us the path forward as we grieve, Lord. In Jesus' name, amen. All right. This morning is part two of a sermon that I'm calling Early Church Distinctives. Last week was part one. Hopefully you have your notes and you've got them numbered one through three. This week is going to be four, five, six, and seven. And last week I opened up with a short fictional story, really a parable, about a boy that was firing arrows at a barn and the arrows would land in the midst of a sea of red and then he would walk up and paint a target around the arrow and go, look, I hit the bullseye. And we talked about how, you know, this happens and this is applicable in a lot of organizations and institutions. It's a good parable about the dangers of mission drift. And often we start things without even knowing what we're going for, without even knowing what the goal is, without even knowing what the target is. And so we are asking last week as a church, how do we know that we're hitting the target? Another way to think about it is if Jesus and Paul were to come into the church on a Sunday morning when that's allowed, would they look around grace and everything that we're doing and say, yeah, you guys are nailing it. This is exactly what you're supposed to be doing. This is the target that we painted for you. So last week we asked the question, how do we know that we're hitting that target? How do we know that what we're doing as Grace is right? That Sunday mornings and small groups and children's ministry and student ministry and the philanthropic ministries that we do, how do we know that all that is right and good? Well, in Acts chapter 2, verses 42 through 47, we have a seminal passage that defines the early church. It paints the target for us. It shows us these are the things that the early church was characterized by. What's going on in the passage is Jesus has gone into heaven. He's left the disciples with the keys to the kingdom. They've received the Holy Spirit. They went out and they preached to thousands of people this gospel of repentance. Repent of who you thought Jesus was when you killed him and accept and walk in faith in the fact that Jesus and when he challenged them to repentance, it says about 3,000 were added to their number. And then those 3,000 formed the church. And right after that, we get Acts 2, 42 through 47, and it tells us the very things that defined the church. So last week, we looked at the first three distinctives that we see as defining the early church. This week, I want to look at the next four, four, five, six, and seven. And we said last week, there's different ways to group these together. You could pull out four distinctives or nine, but we're doing seven. And so last week we talked about the fact that they were devoted to the apostles' teaching, meaning they were eager learners. They were devoted to fellowship, meaning they were devoted to Christ-centered time together, and they were devoted to prayers, meaning that they were committed to the spiritual disciplines that they expressed in that day. So this week, as we continue to ask, how do we know if we're doing it right? What does God expect of his church? I want to continue to look at these distinctives that define the early church. This is why in Hebrews we're told to not forsake the assembling of ourselves together. Because there's something special about being in the same place. And if nothing else, that's what this time of pandemic and isolation has taught us. Across the board, across the country, almost universally, church engagement and virtual attendance is declining. And as we've talked about that as a staff, and I've talked about that with the elders, I've just made the point that, you know, online church, this ability to participate in church in our sweatpants and the comfort of our own home, that's been a thing for at least 15 years, maybe longer. And there's a reason why it hasn't taken off. There's a reason why it hasn't overtaken in-person church. Because even now in the 21st century, we understand that there's a power and an efficacy that's difficult to capture in simply being together, in experiencing the teaching together, in laughing together, in and worshiping together and sharing together in the lobby, we understand that that is important. It's why at Grace, if you do come to a Discover Grace class, that one of the things we do ask our partners to commit to is to prioritize Sunday morning service. Because we believe that the gathering matters. And I can't wait until we are able to gather again. It's a distinctive of the early church and it ought to define our church. The sixth distinctive is the one that, of all of them, probably fires me up the most. I get so excited about this, and I think that it defines the early church. They were defined by communion and community. They were defined by communion and community. We see in verse 42 that they were devoted to the breaking of bread. And then again in 46 that they gathered in one another's homes and they broke bread together. It happens two times. And then all throughout this passage, we see they, they, they, collective, collective, collective. It's always about others. And the church is a fundamentally communal institution. It is fundamentally involved with others. I've said often it is impossible to live out the Christian life on an island. It is impossible to grow closer to Jesus void of the influence of others in your life. We absolutely, our souls need to be surrounded by godly Christian community. That's why at Grace, our mission statement is to connect people to Jesus and to connect people to people because we believe that we cannot deepen our connection with Jesus void of connections with others. And I believe this so fervently that I would say to you, if you're listening this morning and you're not sure that you have Christian community in your life, ignore everything else that I'm saying. Put it all on the back burner. Just take it and set it aside for a later date and get Christian community in your life. Stop right now. Quit listening to me and pray that God would provide for you a community of faith who supports you, who love you, who have permission to tell you the truth about yourself and to tell you what Jesus says about you. We desperately need Christian community in our life. And the early church was a communal thing, and that persists to this day. But it wasn't just about community. It was about communion. We see that phrase, the breaking of bread, and we automatically think that this is an expression of community and hospitality, and it is. And for all of history, for all of history, that has been how we've expressed hospitality. Food has been the fundamental way that we've expressed community. Once you get to know somebody a little bit, maybe you have a common activity or something, but eventually you're going to say, hey, let's grab lunch. Let's get the wives together and let's go to dinner. Let's get the families together and y'all come over. And increasingly that means we go somewhere and we experience a food together, but the most intimate time, the most special times are when people are invited over to the home. When you invite people into your home, there's a special care taken. You clean up the house. You let them know that you care about them, that they matter to you. You try to think of the special thing that they like, of the appetizer that they went nuts over the last time, of the dessert that you can remember in conversation that they said they like. If you're making steaks and there's somebody who doesn't like steak, you make sure and you have chicken to make them feel thought for and cared for. You make sure that there's something for their kids so that they know that their kid is important to you as well. There's this special power of hospitality, of welcoming people into our homes and expressing community in that way. And when the tradition of communion started, that's where it started. It started in someone's home as Jesus and the disciples sat around and broke bread together. They sat around and they were having a meal together. They were expressing community. It was the Passover supper. And you know, we observe communion in our churches. Most churches observe it like grace does. At grace, we do it once a month in the service. The elders stand on either side at the end of the sermon. I'll go through the story of communion and when it started and we'll have a particular thought that we go with. Then we spend some time in prayer and then we line up and we get we get the bread, and we dip it, and we go back to our seats, and it's an austere, respectful time, and that's right and good. But communion didn't start that way. Communion started in community. Communion started around a table. When Jesus took the bread, and he looked at the disciples, and and he broke it and he began to hand it out. And this was not an unusual practice. Every home didn't have a knife. The way that you serve bread was to take the loaf and tear off a portion of it and give it to your guests. So what Jesus did was not a new thing. This wasn't unusual to the disciples or anyone else who could have seen it. It was a ubiquitous, common part of the meal. And in this moment, Jesus takes the thing that we do every time we express community and he imbues it with purpose. And he says, every time you do this, do what? Line up in church and get in the line and tear off the bread and dip it in the wine and spend some time praying? No, not that. Every time you do this, every time you gather in community with me as your focus and you break bread, you serve the bread to the people who are in your house. This common activity that was mundane until this moment. Jesus says, every time you do this from now on, I want you to remember me. I want you to remember that I'm the bread, that I'm the bread of life, that my body was broken for you. Similarly, he takes the wine and he pours it. It's a totally common mundane activity. It happens in every dinner party ever where the host takes the glasses and pours the drink. And Jesus says, whenever you do this, whenever you do what? Gather in church and dip the bread in the wine? No, whenever you experience community together and when you serve the drinks, I want you to stop and remember me and feel that and see that as my blood that is poured out for you. Remember my crucifixion and that I am the tie that binds here and that I am what brings you in common with one another and that I am what reconciles you with the heavenly Father. Remember that. Communion didn't start in church buildings. It started at dinner tables. It started in community. And Jesus took these mundane expressions that are a part of every communal gathering around the table, and he said, from now on, when you do these things, don't just let them be a passive thing where you just serve the bread and you serve the drinks and you move on. I want you to stop and I want you to remember me. That's communion. Communion is always an expression of community. Communion always draws us into community and community should always focus on communion. So I think the challenge for us at Grace, who love community very much, we're real good at community. That's one of my favorite things about this church. We love having people over. We love getting together. But the challenge for us is when we do, when that bread is served and when it's broken, when the drinks are poured, it is right and good and obedient to pause and to pray and to say, Jesus, thank you that you are this bread. Thank you that you are this drink. Thank you that you make tonight possible and that you make our relationship with you possible. We're having fun here tonight, Jesus, but we want to pause and we want to say thank you for making this possible and we want to remember you because that's the instruction of communion. Not once a month when you're in church, come to the front and take the bread and dip it in the wine. That is a shadow. That is a mimicry of the actual communion. And it is right and good to do it in church. But it is forgetful and wrong if we don't do it together in community. So let the challenge be to grace as we commune, as we gather, as we express hospitality and we all begin to fling our doors back open and have people over. Can we please take a moment in those times and do things in remembrance of Christ and make communion more a part of our community. Finally, the seventh distinctive is that this church had a contagious joy. I want to read for you the last portion of scripture so that you kind of know what I'm talking about. It says, They gathered together every day. They invited people into their homes. It's not a stretch to think that they would just invite their neighbors in too because there's a meal and you should come have fun with us. They gathered in the temple courts. They pooled their resources and gave to anyone who had need. No doubt that brought people in who had need, who experienced this genuine community and love for the first time in their life. And then in all of that, as they met with glad and happy hearts, they praised their God and it said that they won favor with all the people. Not just the people of the church, but the people around them, which means that the people of Jerusalem at large began to take notice of this infectious community of joy that was the early church. And because they began to take notice of that, because they won favor with the people surrounding them simply by being an expression of the church and exuding that contagious joy, because people saw that, this passage ends with, and the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. Their contagious and infectious joy led to the salvation of souls. It's really interesting to me that two weeks ago I talked in Acts 2 about the fundamental and foundational repentance of the church. It's a confession that I've been wrong about who I thought Jesus was and I'm going to walk in the belief that he is who he says he is. And out of that confession and repentance, 3,000 people were added to that number. And now in Acts 2, 42 through 47, we see more people being added to their numbers. And the confession and repentance is what drew people in at the beginning, but now at this point in the church, what's now drawing people in? Now what's drawing people in is the favor that their infectious joy is winning with all people. Now what we're seeing is the church cranking on all cylinders. We're seeing the results of what happens when people are devoted to the apostles' teaching and are eager learners, when they're devoted to fellowship in Christ and their time together, when they're defined by community and communion, when they're known for their generosity, when they're experiencing joy, and all of that is working together to cause the people of Jerusalem to look at the church and go, what's going on over there? That's different. I want to be a part of that. That's why when we have Grace's big night out, whenever we can do that again, I cannot wait. I always tell Compass Rose where we have them. They say, do you want to just rent it out? Should we shut it down and just invite Grace people? I always say, no way. I want the other folks of Raleigh to see our community because I believe our community is infectious. This is how the church ought to work. This is how we draw people in. And I believe, Grace, I absolutely do, that even though we are in a time of trial right now because we can't meet together, that as soon as we can fling the doors open and as we move forward, I think grace is going to be stronger than it ever has. And I think if we will commit ourselves to these seven distinctives, that if we will be eager learners, that if we will devote ourselves to Christ-centered time together, that if we will be known for our generosity, committed to spiritual disciplines, if we will be committed to the gathering, if we will see the importance of community and communion, I think if we will do all those things, it will produce in us an infectious and contagious joy that the people of Raleigh will notice and come to. And I hope that's what we will be. I hope that we will be a church in the 21st century that embodies all the distinctives of the church of the first century. And I'm so excited to see where we get to go from here when this season of quarantine is over. Let me pray for us. Father, you are so good to us. We can't fathom how you love us. We can't fathom how you look out for us. We are collectively thrilled that we get to be participants in your church, in your kingdom, in your bride that you came to rescue. Thank you for Jesus, who is the tie that binds us together and reconciles us to you. God, I pray that we would be every bit as unflinchingly the church in the 21st century as they were in the first century. Give us boldness to go where you would have us go. Give us zeal and energy to get there. Give us a devotion to you to sustain us. Give us an infectious joy to draw others in. It's in your son's name we pray. Amen.
Grace, this week there's a man named George Floyd who was killed by a police officer. George was a black man, and you can't help but think that his race was a white woman who, in a racially fueled fear, weaponized the black man's race against him in a threat. And those instances are the most recent that have come into the national conscience. But there are just more instances in a long string of events that have happened that have pointed to the fact that we live in a culture with simmering racial tension. We live in a place where racial inequality is real. And I didn't think it would be right to get up here and just start preaching about Acts as if those things hadn't happened this week. I didn't think it would be right to meet together as together as we can be on a Sunday morning now and not acknowledge those things and pray for the racial divide and the wounds in our country to heal. And I didn't think it would be right to start this Sunday as a church and not earnestly ask our God together, what can we do, what can grace do to be a part of healing this divide? What portions of it as a greatly and majorly lily-white congregation can we own? And how can we contribute to closing the divide that exists in our culture? So I wanted to take a minute as we begin and pray for George Floyd and his family and pray for the racial divide in our country and pray for wisdom, for grace, as we seek to find how the Lord would have us be an active part of the healing of these wounds. So would you please pray with me? Father, our hearts are broken that we live in a place where things like this happen. Our hearts are broken that these incidents are not isolated. They're just the ones that we see. We know that you see all the incidents. We know that you have seen all the injustice. And we know that your heart breaks over injustice far more than ours ever could. So Father, first we pray for your heart in the face of these things. Break ours with yours. Father, we pray for the family of George Floyd. We ask that you would bring a healing that only you could bring. We pray for the attitudes that underlie the fear of Amy Cooper. And ask that you would solve those and bring those to the fore so that we might confront them and deal with them with equanimity and with justice and with grace. And Father, we ask that you would guide the partners and the leadership of grace and show us how we are to contribute to closing this divide and healing these wounds. Show us the path forward as we grieve, Lord. In Jesus' name, amen. All right. This morning is part two of a sermon that I'm calling Early Church Distinctives. Last week was part one. Hopefully you have your notes and you've got them numbered one through three. This week is going to be four, five, six, and seven. And last week I opened up with a short fictional story, really a parable, about a boy that was firing arrows at a barn and the arrows would land in the midst of a sea of red and then he would walk up and paint a target around the arrow and go, look, I hit the bullseye. And we talked about how, you know, this happens and this is applicable in a lot of organizations and institutions. It's a good parable about the dangers of mission drift. And often we start things without even knowing what we're going for, without even knowing what the goal is, without even knowing what the target is. And so we are asking last week as a church, how do we know that we're hitting the target? Another way to think about it is if Jesus and Paul were to come into the church on a Sunday morning when that's allowed, would they look around grace and everything that we're doing and say, yeah, you guys are nailing it. This is exactly what you're supposed to be doing. This is the target that we painted for you. So last week we asked the question, how do we know that we're hitting that target? How do we know that what we're doing as Grace is right? That Sunday mornings and small groups and children's ministry and student ministry and the philanthropic ministries that we do, how do we know that all that is right and good? Well, in Acts chapter 2, verses 42 through 47, we have a seminal passage that defines the early church. It paints the target for us. It shows us these are the things that the early church was characterized by. What's going on in the passage is Jesus has gone into heaven. He's left the disciples with the keys to the kingdom. They've received the Holy Spirit. They went out and they preached to thousands of people this gospel of repentance. Repent of who you thought Jesus was when you killed him and accept and walk in faith in the fact that Jesus and when he challenged them to repentance, it says about 3,000 were added to their number. And then those 3,000 formed the church. And right after that, we get Acts 2, 42 through 47, and it tells us the very things that defined the church. So last week, we looked at the first three distinctives that we see as defining the early church. This week, I want to look at the next four, four, five, six, and seven. And we said last week, there's different ways to group these together. You could pull out four distinctives or nine, but we're doing seven. And so last week we talked about the fact that they were devoted to the apostles' teaching, meaning they were eager learners. They were devoted to fellowship, meaning they were devoted to Christ-centered time together, and they were devoted to prayers, meaning that they were committed to the spiritual disciplines that they expressed in that day. So this week, as we continue to ask, how do we know if we're doing it right? What does God expect of his church? I want to continue to look at these distinctives that define the early church. By way of review, I wanted to take a minute and read the breaking of bread at the prayers. This week I want to start out by looking at that phrase that they sold all that they had in common and gave to any who had need. And we want to sum that up by saying that the fourth distinctive, if you're keeping your list there, is that they were known for generosity. They were known for their generosity. And it's interesting what's happening in this passage because what's literally happening is as the church is formed, everybody is selling whatever they have and giving it to the church leadership and saying, here, this is for the greater good. You guys use it for whatever you need to use it for. Obviously, my family's going to have some needs, but we trust you to provide for those. Here's everything that we own. Please use it to provide for everyone here, which is a super high bar. That's really daunting. Can you imagine if when we had our new members class at Grace, when we did Discover Grace and we talked all about Grace and who we are, and then we got to the end of it and it was like, okay, if you want to be a partner, here are the requirements. You know, you need to commit to Sunday morning attendance. You should be a believer. We'd like to see you in a small group. Also, small thing, if you could just kind of sell everything that you have and write a check to the elders, we'll take it from here. That would be a pretty tough sell. That's a pretty tall order. But to understand what's happening here, we need to feel the freedom to apply the principle and not necessarily the practice, because the principle is far more important. First, we need to understand what's happening in ancient Israel, in Israel at the time of Christ. Israel is what we would think of as a third world country. There's lots of joblessness. There's lots of poverty. There's lots of hunger. There's lots of suffering. There's no medical system really to speak of. And so suffering and need and want in Jerusalem was great. And while it was great, there was no infrastructure to provide for those who had fallen through the cracks of society. And what we understand is that God has intentionally designed the institution of the church to undergird society as a safety net to catch those who have fallen through the cracks of familial care. God first assigns to care for others. He first assigns family to care for family. This is why over and over again in Scripture, God makes a point of saying that if you love me, if you want to express true religion, then you'll care for the widows and the orphans. We see this in James in the New Testament, that true religion is to care for the widows and the orphans. We see it in Isaiah in the Old Testament, where God says, if you really want to please me, then plead the cause of the fatherless and take up the case of the widow. And what he's saying there is, and even in Deuteronomy when he says, look out for the sojourners, for the aliens, for the ones that don't have a family and can't support themselves, what he's saying in all that is, the church needs to serve in society as a safety net to care for those who fall through the cracks of familial care. We're supposed to be there and be helping them. And when there is a need, we are supposed to meet it. God has designed the church as an institutional safety net for society. And so in that time, there was no government. There was no Medicare. There was no welfare. There was no food stamps. There was no health care. There was none of that. And so the church was the only hope for the person who didn't have a family and was in need and couldn't support themselves. But now in our culture, thankfully, we have another safety net, which is the government. We do have a societal infrastructure to watch out for people who fall through the cracks of familial care. But still, the church undergirds all of that, and people who cannot be cared for by their family and cannot be cared for by the government, God looks at us, the church, and says, now you, you care for them. So we're still there, and it's still our responsibility, which is why the point from this part of the passage is that we need to be generous. We need to be conduits of God's generosity. We need to have a grieving heart for those who hurt and reach out to help those who can't help themselves. We need to be glad providers for those that are not provided for by their family or provided for by the government. We need to rally around them and be generous in spirits and be conduits of God's generosity. Another way to think of it perhaps is like this. When I became a senior pastor, I learned eventually about a thing called a designated giving fund. I'd really never heard of that before. It might shock you guys to know that I'm not a financial titan. I don't really know all the ins and outs of all that stuff. It's all news to me. I just try to spend less than what I make. That's pretty much it. But I found out that there's these things called designated giving funds. And how this works is you have money and you give a portion of that money to this fund that a company or an individual manages. And a lot of people will give money to this individual and they manage all the money in a fund. And that money is earmarked for charitable donations, charitable causes. And whoever you give your money to, they just sit on it and they hold it for however long you want to. And then when something pricks your heart, when something touches you, when you see a need that you'd like to meet, you pick up the phone or you type the email and you let the person managing your money know, hey, I would like you to send this much money to this person because they need it. This matters to me. I'd like you to allocate my resources to that person or that institution for those people. That's how a designated giving fund works fundamentally. And what it's made me realize is that we're all God's designated giving funds. That's what stewardship is. We've heard about this idea of stewardship before, that everything we have is God's and not our own. We've heard about that. But the more I thought about it this week, I've realized we're all God's designated giving funds. He allocates a portion of money to us. He entrusts it to us. And every now and again, he picks up the phone or he writes the email and he taps us on the shoulder and he says, hey, this thing matters to me. I'd like you to allocate some of those resources to them. I'd like you to allocate some of those resources to these people. That's the principle of what's happening here in Acts chapter 2, is they're expressing the Lord's generosity. And I think increasingly, and I know that that's a tall order, and I know that you may be very far away from viewing everything you have as really belonging to God. And that's, I think, a progressive revelation as we understand God. But I think one of the marks of spiritual maturity in a church and in an individual is when the church and when the person understands that we're really just designated giving funds for God. He's allocated a portion of his resources to us as individuals and to us as a church. And every now and again, he taps us on the shoulder and he says, hey, this matters to me. I'd like you to shift some of those resources over there to them. And that's how we're to serve. It's the mark of the church to be generous. That's one of my favorite things about this church. We love having people over. We love getting together. But the challenge for us is when we do, when that bread is served and when it's broken, when the drinks are poured, it is right and good and obedient to pause and to pray and to say, Jesus, thank you that you are this bread. Thank you that you are this drink. Thank you that you make tonight possible and that you make our relationship with you possible. We're having fun here tonight, Jesus, but we want to pause and we want to say thank you for making this possible and we want to remember you because that's the instruction of communion. Not once a month when you're in church, come to the front and take the bread and dip it in the wine. That is a shadow. That is a mimicry of the actual communion. And it is right and good to do it in church. But it is forgetful and wrong if we don't do it together in community. So let the challenge be to grace as we commune, as we gather, as we express hospitality and we all begin to fling our doors back open and have people over. Can we please take a moment in those times and do things in remembrance of Christ and make communion more a part of our community. Finally, the seventh distinctive is that this church had a contagious joy. I want to read for you the last portion of scripture so that you kind of know what I'm talking about. It says, They gathered together every day. They invited people into their homes. It's not a stretch to think that they would just invite their neighbors in too because there's a meal and you should come have fun with us. They gathered in the temple courts. They pooled their resources and gave to anyone who had need. No doubt that brought people in who had need, who experienced this genuine community and love for the first time in their life. And then in all of that, as they met with glad and happy hearts, they praised their God and it said that they won favor with all the people. Not just the people of the church, but the people around them, which means that the people of Jerusalem at large began to take notice of this infectious community of joy that was the early church. And because they began to take notice of that, because they won favor with the people surrounding them simply by being an expression of the church and exuding that contagious joy, because people saw that, this passage ends with, and the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. Their contagious and infectious joy led to the salvation of souls. It's really interesting to me that two weeks ago I talked in Acts 2 about the fundamental and foundational repentance of the church. It's a confession that I've been wrong about who I thought Jesus was and I'm going to walk in the belief that he is who he says he is. And out of that confession and repentance, 3,000 people were added to that number. And now in Acts 2, 42 through 47, we see more people being added to their numbers. And the confession and repentance is what drew people in at the beginning, but now at this point in the church, what's now drawing people in? Now what's drawing people in is the favor that their infectious joy is winning with all people. Now what we're seeing is the church cranking on all cylinders. We're seeing the results of what happens when people are devoted to the apostles' teaching and are eager learners, when they're devoted to fellowship in Christ and their time together, when they're defined by community and communion, when they're known for their generosity, when they're experiencing joy, and all of that is working together to cause the people of Jerusalem to look at the church and go, what's going on over there? That's different. I want to be a part of that. That's why when we have Grace's big night out, whenever we can do that again, I cannot wait. I always tell Compass Rose where we have them. They say, do you want to just rent it out? Should we shut it down and just invite Grace people? I always say, no way. I want the other folks of Raleigh to see our community because I believe our community is infectious. This is how the church ought to work. This is how we draw people in. And I believe, Grace, I absolutely do, that even though we are in a time of trial right now because we can't meet together, that as soon as we can fling the doors open and as we move forward, I think grace is going to be stronger than it ever has. And I think if we will commit ourselves to these seven distinctives, that if we will be eager learners, that if we will devote ourselves to Christ-centered time together, that if we will be known for our generosity, committed to spiritual disciplines, if we will be committed to the gathering, if we will see the importance of community and communion, I think if we will do all those things, it will produce in us an infectious and contagious joy that the people of Raleigh will notice and come to. And I hope that's what we will be. I hope that we will be a church in the 21st century that embodies all the distinctives of the church of the first century. And I'm so excited to see where we get to go from here when this season of quarantine is over. Let me pray for us. Father, you are so good to us. We can't fathom how you love us. We can't fathom how you look out for us. We are collectively thrilled that we get to be participants in your church, in your kingdom, in your bride that you came to rescue. Thank you for Jesus, who is the tie that binds us together and reconciles us to you. God, I pray that we would be every bit as unflinchingly the church in the 21st century as they were in the first century. Give us boldness to go where you would have us go. Give us zeal and energy to get there. Give us a devotion to you to sustain us. Give us an infectious joy to draw others in. It's in your son's name we pray. Amen.
Good morning. My name is Nate again, and if I haven't got a chance to meet you, I would love to do that. You came on the perfect Sunday to meet people. It's Hootenanny Sunday. So after this, we go to that parking lot there and we just kind of celebrate God and his goodness, reflect on the year that we've had. This is something that we do every year. We call it the sometimes annual Hootenanny because COVID made us not have it. So it would be dishonest to call it the annual Hootenanny. And we care about honesty here. So it's this sometimes annual Hootenanny. And I hope that you'll stick around and talk to some folks and say, hey, and again, if I haven't gotten the chance to meet you, I would love to do that. This morning is going to look a little different. You can see I'm going to be talking to a couple of different folks within the church this morning about service and about volunteering. One of the things that we realized, I guess it was in August, I was talking with Aaron Winston, our children's pastor, and we realized that we hadn't highlighted service at Grace and volunteering at Grace in a really long time. And we said, it's high time we do this. And then we thought, well, how do we want to do it? Normally, you just preach a sermon about serving and servanthood. And God wanted us to partner with the local church and things like that. And I would bet 75% of you could predict most of the things that I would say in that kind of a sermon. And because of that, and also because I'm always looking for ways to get other voices up here and in front of the church so that we can hear from one another and learn from one another, we thought it would be good and interesting to do this kind of like Ministry Partner Sunday. So in the summer, we have Ministry Partner Sunday where we highlight the different ministry partners that we have outside the walls of the church, and I'll bring them up and talk to them about what they do. And so we thought we would do that with some of our volunteers this morning. Before we do that, just to kind of set up the conversation to set you guys up as you consider your role at Grace or any local church, I did have some thoughts from 1 Corinthians. So if you have a Bible, you can turn there, 1 Corinthians chapter 12. I'm going to start in verse 18. The idea of the church being a body is all over scripture. It's all throughout, particularly the New Testament, particularly the writings of Paul. And there's some seminal passages where he talks about this, but this or Romans are probably the two, and this has a little bit more detail. So in chapter 12, Paul is detailing the spiritual gifts. He talks about this idea that God has given each of us gifts that we are to use in his kingdom. One of the verses I highlight often and say to you guys often is Ephesians 2.10, where it says that we are Christ's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, that we should walk in them. And so the idea is that as we live the Christian life, we are trying to determine, God, what are my good works and how do I walk in them? What do you have for me to do and to walk in? And so that ties in here in this idea that we're all part of a body. We all have a part to play. We all have a role to fill. We all have something to do. And so it's incumbent upon us to figure out what that is. This is what Paul says. But as it is, he's just talked about the body and the ear needs the eyes and the eyes need the feet and the feet needs the hands and none of them can exist without the other. And then he says, but as it is in verse 18, God arranged the members of the body, each one of them as he says, of you, nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable, we bestow greater honor. I love this passage, particularly as a pastor, because I addressed this a few weeks ago, I think when we were talking about Hebrews in August. But we can make pastors more important than they should be, more valuable to the church than they really are. We can start to feel like staff, the people who work here, we're the most important people, and everybody else is kind of auxiliary, and they're helping. I know that when I grew up in my church, I kind of sensed that. And it's really important for me to point out, as often as I can, in God's kingdom, nobody's more important than anybody else. Nobody plays a more crucial role than anybody else. Leaders are to have a higher degree of accountability because it's our job to teach truth. But that's not a higher value in God's kingdom. And so I believe in grace. All of our partners are equally valuable. Everything we do is equally valuable in God's kingdom and in God's eyes. And so you can't, there's some, sometimes there are people who serve behind the scenes and I will get from them that they don't, that they feel like what they do is kind of small potatoes and it's not. It's hugely important. Everything that we do as the body of Christ is hugely important and matters in eternity and matters to God and is valued by God. Because of that, I wanted us to hear from different portions of our body that play different parts and different roles, and maybe we can relate to some of them. Maybe we'll be inspired to serve. We all have this sheet in our seat, and I'll be going through this at the end of the sermon time today. But I wanted us to hear from people in the church who serve and kind of get to know them a little bit. I felt like it was appropriate on Hootenanny Sunday because we're going out to talk and to be communal and to be a family. So this is kind of a family meeting this morning. Mike and Holly, if you guys want to go ahead and make your way up here and grab that microphone. Oh, you have it? Okay. Is there a microphone over there? There it is. Okay, good. I wanted you guys to hear from parts of the body as well. These are Mike and Holly. This is Mike and Holly Anderson. Just to kind of... I want to say wet your whistle a little bit, but that feels like I don't want to say that. Just at the Hootenanny, ask Mike and Holly what their email names are for each other, okay? I'm just going to, I learned that when they first started coming here. We met for lunch, and I saw what their email names were for each other, and they're great. So ask them what they are. I'm not going to say them from stage because there's children in the room, but just ask them what they are. Mike and Holly, you guys have been coming to Grace for how long? Two and a half. Two and a half years. Two and a half years. And in what capacity do you guys serve? So we fill your tummies every Sunday with yum, warm, yummy coffee. That's what we do. And what made you guys decide that we want to do coffee every Sunday? Because they literally do it every Sunday. I'm like, we can get you extra help. They're like, we're good. We like it. We'll do it every Sunday. So what made you decide, let's get involved, and let's get involved at the coffee level? Okay, so my wife and I, we own our own businesses. so we have an opportunity to do every year, like you do in corporate America, is we do a goal-setting session. And so we go through all of our business plans and all of our personal plans about what we want to get accomplished. And so we usually do that the end of November, early December, every year. And so the year that we were doing this, our personal plans was how do we invest more time, resources, money to Grace? That's kind of where we were. And this was our first. We were eight months, nine months into Grace at that point in time. And just trying to figure out where can we get plugged in? What can we do? How can we get more involved? Small group is definitely something we had just started. And we wanted to figure out how to get further more engaged and so the sunday of after setting those sessions on um that service was all about not being a consumer of grace and how do you be more of a provider as a partner and it really hit it hit us real quick and we shot nate a quick email you guys were just you were just leeching off the the system. We were just little leeching. Yeah, you were dead weight. And so we had lunch with Nate and we said, how can we help? What do we, we want to get plugged in somewhere somehow. And he tried to put us back there in that big old booth back there. And we know nothing about that booth. So we weren't going down that road. And so coffee, obviously with COVID and being very sensitive to what was going on in the world. We thought, you know, that would be a great way for us to kind of really get plugged in and start that back up and really move on. So we just kind of jumped on it and went from there. Now, tell me, Holly, I think it's helpful to get a little bit of y'all's background. Not like, how'd you meet? Not that, but you guys met doing a similar job, and I think that the job that you did contributes to how you guys approach how you do coffee. So what did you do when you met, and how does that help what you do here? Yeah, sure. So Mike and I met. We did sports tourism industry for a long time, so the hospitality industry. We worked for convention and visitors bureaus, and it's all about hospitality and service. And we approach everything in our life like that, our new career now. So we expect a high-level, high-touch service. And so it's the little things, like writing the messages on the cups and having a flavor of the month in creamer. So we never go here. We're always, like, way over the edge, sometimes too much. But it comes from our past and how we met and just high-touch customer service, and we wanted to bring just our love of that to the people that we love here at Grace. Yeah, and that's why you guys are discovering in real time right now that you're going to be planning the golf tournament for us in the spring when we do that. We've both done that before. They're perfect for it. And so they take their professional background and they apply it to coffee. Now, coffee is underwhelming. That is a small thing compared to what you normally organize. But one of the things I noticed right away is the writing on the cups. I don't know if you guys have noticed the writing on the cups, but we don't buy them like that. They do it. And which one of you does it? Mike does it. I have the worst handwriting ever. That's his penmanship on the cups. And I saw him back there this morning. He's got a note on his phone where he's typed up the little messages that he's brainstormed, and then he's just alternating as he's writing those on your cups, just bringing a little bit extra to it every Sunday morning. How have you guys, it's a combo question, so answer it however you like. How have you guys personally benefited from getting to do that for now, close to a year and a half, almost two years? And then most importantly, how have you watched God work to use that bit of service to bring you closer to him? Yeah, we kind of talked about how those kind of coincided, we felt like. And I think so much of it is we love coming here. We love sitting in this building with people that we've just really grown to see as family and friends. And it's been cool in the short amount of time we've been here. And so there's a selfish part of it that's like, I have to get up and go. Like, if I just want to put my PJs on and have coffee and watch Nate for my house, even though he'll give me business about it later, I at least, like, I can't even think that way, right? Like, I know that I have a reason to be here. So there's that selfish reason of I know I have to be because I've committed, but it's also because we want to be here. So I think it's helped that, and it's just helped plug us in. Like, just being here in the morning, I think we've gotten to know, you know, you guys and staff better, which has been really cool, but also the people that serve, too, and really get to see what it takes to make this all happen on Sunday. And it's been really, you know, really neat. We were talking that the church that I was most involved with when I was a little kid and my family was really involved. This is the first time as an adult that I've been plugged in. And it has just felt like the most perfect place. I call my mom all the time and I'm like, I can't believe God brought us here. This is just, it's perfect and amazing. And what I've been looking for for a long time. So That's great. That's great. I love to hear that. Well, we're grateful to you guys for serving. We're grateful to you for planning the golf tournament. And it'll be in the end of April. And we're grateful for the coffee. But if you want to sign up for coffee, they've agreed to relinquish some rights for Sunday mornings. Jacob and Elena are so committed that they drove straight from the beach this morning to be here to do this. Is that true? Yesterday. Yesterday. Oh, yeah, because their dog got a little bit of a struggle. There you go. They've been in here for two weeks. Elena couldn't be less interested in being on the stage right now. I couldn't believe. I knew that Jacob would be game. Jacob's fine. But I couldn't believe. I was like, if Elena wants to do it, I think people would benefit. And I knew that you were going to be like, no, not a chance. And then Jacob said, yeah, we'll be there. And I thought, okay, I'm not going to ask any questions. I didn't ask permission. Yeah, sure. Sure. So, um, a little bit of background on them and I didn't have time, nor did I think it was appropriate and sure service, but it would have been fun. Jacob is a huge birdwatcher. So if you like birds, talk to Jacob at the hootenanny and he will love to talk to you about it. I know. And I almost, I wanted to do a slideshow of birds and see if you could identify them, but maybe another time, maybe another time. But after they had been going here a while, Jacob and I got lunch and he told me a little bit about his background, and he kind of let it slip that he could play guitar, that he could lead worship. And whenever, in my position, you hear that someone's musically talented, you kind of go, okay, you want to get involved? I mean, that's a high skill position. That's pretty tough. But I kind of told him, like, I'm not going to tell Aaron. I'm just going to let you sit on it. You let us know when you're ready. And so Jacob's story, and it's one of the reasons I wanted you all to hear from him, is I'm kind of, I'm teeing this up for you a little bit. He had done it a lot, gotten burned out, found a new place, and wasn't sure when he wanted to re-engage and if he even trusted doing that. And so I thought his perspective on why you decided to like, yeah, let's go ahead and sign back up and play guitar and all that stuff. So if you kind of want to fill in the blanks there for that story, that's great. Yeah, sure. So, um, yes, long story short, I've been in praise and worship since seventh grade. So whatever, whatever age that is, 13, um, got burned out. I mean, every, every church I was involved with was a, was a plant we were tearing up, sitting down every Sunday. We were serving multiple roles. Um, and then adding onto that, I kind of got burned a little bit at church as well. So I kind of had a sour taste in my mouth. And we were out of church for a long time. And I was not playing for a long time. In fact, I think the first thing I told Aaron was I probably haven't played in a band setting in close to 10 years. So we can tell, but you're getting there. Oh, for sure. Yeah. Yeah, for sure. Yeah. Yeah. So my, my first practice Aaron, Aaron's like, yeah, come, come, come sit in. And then he's like, Oh, see you Sunday. I'm like, Oh, that wasn't at all talked about. Um, but, uh, but yeah, so for me, I guess leading up to it as a series of things, my wife dragging me here into church when I was stubbornly not wanting to be here, her volunteering to serve initially in the children's ministry, you know, just all these things that were poking me. My parents, my dad actually had been borrowing my guitar for over a year, and he brought it back to me at the beach vacation last year in September. And he's like, I think you're going to need this. And so everyone around me was seeing the writing on the wall, and I was feeling kind of the tug on my heart. And I think our conversation, which I was intentionally coming here and hiding. I didn't want to be known. I wanted to be unknown. Because the second you find out, you play guitar. That's right. Yeah, a need. Right. Um, so I was, I mean, and that was impacting my ability to connect. Um, I was, I mean, I think you even made the comments like, Hey, you've been like here for a year or more and I don't know a thing about you. I think that's how you preface like, let's get lunch. That sounds right. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But there was something else you said at lunch, um, that I think it was a week later. I talked to Aaron after service and I'm going to paraphrase it. And you probably said it much more eloquently than I'm going to do. Basically, basically you said you want grace to be a place to heal, but not hide somewhere along those lines. No, that's better than I would say. Yeah. You know, and I'm going to actually, and that was just like the final like stab of like, okay, you're, you're hiding you know, you're healed. You there's, there's writing all on the wall that you need to jump back into this. And so that was, you know, the series of events that led up to me jumping back into worship. But I think a couple months before that, I had worked as an usher a couple times, kind of dipped my toe back into the service realm. Yeah. Yeah. And, Miss Elena, in what ways do you volunteer here? This is active service for her to be here right now. Yes. Yes. Right this second is how she's doing it. I volunteer with the kids ministry. Yeah. Yeah. Elena does a kids' men, but we're going to bring up Shane and Carter to talk about that. You don't have to talk about kids' men. We don't even care about that. That's what on my notes are. Oh, that's okay. That's okay. I want your notes, but I also, one of the reasons that I think her perspective is so great is because if you are also a person who would literally hate to be sitting where she's sitting and having me talking about you right now, like my wife, Jen, everybody look at Jen. She hates this moment. Like if that's you, sometimes it feels like you got to be out front or whatever. And like you don't. Elena, she's remarkably crafty and creative. And so, yes, yes. And so two summers ago, and I hope I don't hurt anybody's feelings with this, but two summers ago, the Summer Extreme theme was Under the Sea. Is that right? And every week, every year, the week before Summer Extreme, the Sunday before, we decorate, and then we kind of add to it throughout the week, and then we do the stage. And when we did Under the Sea, I walked through here the Monday after they got done decorating and was like, who'd we hire? Like, what happened? Like, anybody who comes every year knows that was amazing. And they were like, Elena Farmer. And, like, she started coming. I was like, this was her idea? And so then we got her going on Summer Extreme for this year. Last year, I didn't even know she was going to do this. I don't know if you all remember, but the Christmas theme was Not Home Alone. And it's kind of a Home Alone feel. She did the auditorium in Home Alone stuff. There was paint buckets, and there was a war map on the drum thing. I didn't even know she was going to do it. I just showed up, and it was done. So quietly behind the scenes, she's using this gift and this skill to make the church better. And she's able to do it without ever having to do this or even get any public feedback for it. And then she's already working on the theme for next year's Summer Extreme, I heard. So we're excited about that. But, yeah, when you guys started coming, you jumped in pretty much right away, just kind of helping wherever you could help. What made you want to do that? I knew, so I guess we had, we'd been married for a while, but we had just had Wren, and so I think she was maybe a year or so. And I knew I wanted to have kids, our kids and future kids involved in church and growing up around church. I wanted them to see that God was like important in our family and to us, and it was a priority. I also knew that I wouldn't be committed and prioritized coming to church if I didn't get involved. So it was very important to me to jump in somewhere and get involved so I would be accountable to come. Now, which one is more fun for you? Is it the decorating part? Because there was one day this year where she and I think Faith and maybe Liz were here until like 1.30 a.m. decorating and getting it done. So y'all get after it. Like y'all work hard. And I would imagine there's an element of that that's fun. At least I hope there is. Absolutely. Which one do you find that you enjoy more? Do you enjoy them the same differently? What do you get from kids ministry? What do you get from doing that behind the scenes stuff? I absolutely love doing the decorating. Like that is, I think having a goal and an idea and just being able to plan it and then doing it with my best friends. Like it's just, it's like a girl's party at night at church and nobody's here with no kids. It's amazing. That's right. They tell their husbands, just need a couple more touch-ups. It's great. A few more clouds. Sometimes he brings ice cream. I mean, it's great. For the kids' side, I love it just because I don't know who I was telling, I guess maybe Aaron a few months ago, that it's amazing to hear the kids retell the stories that they hear and then just to know that you kind of had a part in that relationship that they're developing with God. So that's really cool to see and to be a part of. And what age kids are you with usually? So I am now back with two, three, but I had been with the K through, I guess three, K through two. Yeah, K through third. Yeah. And Jacob, or to either one of you, whoever wants to answer, she's very happy to give that up. How has God used stepping out in faith and serving, going, okay, for consistency's sake, I'm going to do this, or God, I feel like you're just pushing me in this direction. How has God used that to encourage you to draw you close to him, to, to build you up as a, as a believer? Yeah. So existing in that kind of rub or the friction that I was in coming to church, but not wanting to commit, I mean, intentionally, um, hiding, I wasn't, I don't think I was receptive to sermons. I was certainly not connecting to people. Um, and you know, you mentioned, I mean, intentionally, hiding. I don't think I was receptive to sermons. I was certainly not connecting to people. And, you know, you mentioned, I guess, what 1 Corinthians, but I think 1 Peter also mentioned something about gifts, about whatever gifts you received, you know, basically serve others and demonstrate God's grace in its various forms, paraphrased. That's good. But for me, I mean, the same reason I've always wanted to be a leader at work is the connection to people and be able to influence people and be able to connect with people to understand how I can best serve people. And that's foundational. I mean, that's arguably one of the biggest parts of my walk, period, right? I mean, I got saved in seventh grade. I started playing place in worship in seventh grade. So, I mean, it's been quite literally foundational to my walk. And so to connect back to that, you know, it's opened my heart in the sermons. It's opened my heart in prayer and quiet time. I found joy in understanding how I can serve others. And I think something else that we really hadn't discussed, but I was thinking about out there, is how his presence fills our home. My kids were six before they heard me play the guitar, right? So, or Wren was six years old. So, and now Praise and Worship is played constantly. I mean, they know what a metronome sounds like now and they probably hate it, but praise and worship fills our house every week. Even the weeks I don't serve, I enjoy tagging along and practicing and playing. So, I think an unintended benefit, right? And so my kids are singing along and they know more of the words to the songs that I play than I do. So that's great. It's unintended. And I think a huge benefit to kind of serving. I love hearing that. And is it just for the record is Aaron now writing you like a rented mule? I mean, are we just driving you right back to burnout? Oh, no, no, no, no. So, well, well, I don't know. Yeah, we have a real discussion here. So, you know, I had never played with in-ears, never played with tracks, you know, hadn't played with a band. He's like, you know, one week of practice and I'm on stage. And then he's like, part of the story, it was before Christmas and I think it was an acoustic set and it was Greg and Carly and Jordan up here. And I remember thinking the whole I was like I probably could play acoustic guitar would probably be nice and that was another thing that kind of pushed me on this journey and I mentioned that to Aaron and he wasted no time and giving me that opportunity to be the solo acoustic guitar up here so I mean I'm improving as a musician selfishly it's nice to have a praise and worship team that's pushing me there. And so, yeah, I enjoy it. And I guess kind of to connect further on to wanting to serve, and I guess people that are maybe apprehensive, everyone's super, super accommodating, right? I mean, I just took three weeks off. I just blocked entire months off, and he hates it, but I do it. And I send him pictures of all the fish I'm catching at the beach. And the birds you're seeing. And the birds, yeah, well, no one cares about that. In fact, if I could get as good as evangelizing the gospel as I could about birds, I think I would be in a better place. That's a separate service. Yeah, right. Yeah. Elena, what would you say, and the last question, what would you say to anybody who's considering serving, not just in kids, although you could, but anywhere who's not serving yet but they're thinking about it? This is more intimidating, sitting up here. I would say just do it. Try it, and if you don't like it, then try a different spot or try somewhere else. I don't know. I don't feel like... That's not what I had in my notes. That's not what I had in my notes. It's all geared toward kids. I don't know. You put me on... Yeah, you put me on the spot. Sorry, Elena. She's never doing this again. Never, ever, ever. This is the one time. No, but I think, and I think we would agree on this. There's a sense of accomplishment, right? There's like, there's plenty of days at work that I leave work and just battered and tired. And I'm like, what did I actually get done? I have no clue. But I think we both feel a sense of accomplishment. You know know we mentioned how we're impacting how she's impacting the kids and and the summer extreme and I doubt I'm impacting anybody musically but I have fun yeah but being part of a team right and and and and just having a sense of pride and what we're accomplishing here and what we're doing here at Grace. Yeah, I like that. Thanks, guys. I like that. You can leave, Elena. Shane and Carter. This is Shane and Carter Smith. They serve in children's ministry together. They've also served as small group leaders. Carter actually served on our architectural committee and helped us come up with the design of the floor plan for the building. So she was there for all the meetings. And really, we should just be talking to Carter. She's a lot more valuable to us than you. If we had to pick one. Carter does a tremendous amount behind the scenes. We have a few people who work behind the scenes that whenever I hear their name brought up for something else, I always say to the staff or to the elders or whoever, like, just be careful. Like, they do so much. Like, please don't ask them. Like, offer to take something else off their plate before we ask them to do this other thing. And Carter is one of those. She's, she's, do what? Yeah, right, right, to do this. And then Shane, Shane used to be a bouncer, so he's in charge of security all the time around here, and he's a Panthers fan, and we beat them two weeks ago, and that's great. Thanks for being up here. What's up, Wake Forest? Okay, Shane and Carter, where do you guys serve? Because you guys serve together. Carter, you're on the children's ministry leadership team too, correct? Okay, but you guys serve together. So I started out actually ushering, I don't know, five or six years ago as a way to kind of get involved. And then Erin kept sending us some nagging emails about how much help she needed on the children's side. So being a coach, I was like, I guess I can try helping over there. And I don't know, it was pretty fun serving over there too. Carter, for everyone else, can you tell us what over there is? We teach K-3, and that's the other wing. K-3, so kindergarten through third grade meet over there. Yes, so we teach the kids over there, large group and small group on Sundays. What does that typically look like? Because that can sound pretty intimidating to go teach. Sometimes know, sometimes it's eight, sometimes it's 20 elementary age kids. You get the lesson during the week. What kind of prep goes into it? Like, what are you guys doing behind the scenes so that you're ready for Sunday morning? And then how does a typical Sunday morning go? Well, Aaron and Julie set up absolutely everything and their team. They have a team behind them. They have everything set up. They email you the lesson plans. They email you kind of an outline for the morning and are available to offer and ask and answer any questions that you have. The kids come in. You do a little activity. You get to sing and dance with them and they get a lot more wild than we do in here. And then we teach them large group and then we break into small group for second and third grade and kindergarten and first grade. And sometimes it's five kids total and sometimes it's 25 total and we just get to all cram back in there. That's great. And Shane, besides Carter Volland telling you probably to do it, what made you decide? because one of the reasons I wanted us to hear from Shane is because we we get we get women to volunteer in the children's ministry more often than we do men and frankly men probably need to just step up to the plate because there's there's not for nothing there's there's there's two genders in all of classrooms, and they should probably be able to look up to both genders as they lead them and guide them and teach them about Jesus. So I think it's good for our boys to see men in their teaching. I think it's good for our girls to see women in their teaching and vice versa. And so we're always grateful when a dad steps up and says, yeah, this is something I want to be a part of. So what made you decide like, okay, yeah, I'm going to do that? Because I didn't, I didn't, I meant to mention this up front. I've asked the volunteers to come up in ascending order of difficulty. So Mike and Holly Anderson running the coffee, and I ran this by Mike beforehand. That's compared now, if we really wanted to get easy, we do like ushers. Okay. But I didn't bring up any ushers. But then the coffee team, right? And then there's the security team, which you just stand out there, and you don't have to listen to the sermon. It's a nice team, actually. And then being in the band, that takes some skill, but I think the hardest ask in the church, honestly, is what you guys do, the K-3. That's super intimidating. It's really difficult, And I think we just disqualify ourselves from the jump, but I don't think we need to. And so I just wanted to hear from you, what made you decide like, yeah, I'm going to take that plunge and go volunteer in that room. Yeah. I think again, just being involved with coaching, you know, coaching different baseball teams and football, I kind of knew what to expect from kids. And I felt like, you know, I could at least teach them. Like I said, Aaron makes it pretty easy on us. She gives you basically a sheet of paper, and as long as you read from it, you can pretty much teach kids a class. For me, I felt like it was almost a way to answer the question of being a disciple making disciples too because I don't feel like I'm ever going to be like a street preacher. I'm not going to go out there, and it's hard to talk to adults, you know, about those situations. But going over there and teaching the kids some of the basic stuff, I just feel like that's a way that you can grow. Just feel like you're, you know, making disciples, somebody else that's hopefully going to grow up and lead this church as well. I love that. I love that a lot. And, Carter, you know, I mean, you guys were here when I got here. Y'all, y'all, y'all been here a long time. You've been serving the whole time that y'all have been here. So it's a part of your DNA and who you are. What is it that makes you continue to serve, continue to come back, continue to sign up and let us put you up on stage and things like that? Like what, what's the joy that you get out of it? Why do you continue to do it? Um, I don't think Aaron would allow me to keep coming to Grace if I didn't serve in the kids ministry. No, we get, I used to teach first grade before I had my oldest son, Cason. So I think that's part of it is selfishly. It's something I do enjoy and I enjoy doing it more for an hour than a nine to five. But we get poured into here every Sunday and it's just a chance to pour into kids. And they are just like little sponges and so excited to be there and so excited to learn and learn about Jesus. They have no hesitation asking hard questions. They have no hesitation expressing their joy through dancing and singing. And they're just genuinely excited to be there. And I find that excitement contagious. And my favorite Sunday to teach back there is Easter Sunday. Oh, wow. Why is that? I mean, I've heard Easter sermons for 30 years. They're pretty good. They're pretty good over here. They're pretty great. The podcast is great. But no, they are so excited. And for some of them, it's their first time hearing it. For some of them, they've heard it for a few years, but each time, something new is clicking for them. The story is unfolding, and they are more excited about the Bible than most of the adults I know. I love that. And last question for you guys. How has God used your opportunities at service, whether it's leading a small group, serving on a leadership team behind the scenes, or serving in the kids? How has God been using that over the years to draw you closer to him and build up your faith? So, I mean, it's for us, obviously, it's been a way to get to know a lot of people in the church. You know, and it's also a way that we feel like, as Carter mentioned, you know, the church pours into us so much. It's a way that we can give back and really help this whole community grow. I mean, we're all here to try and, you know, promote the kingdom. So I feel like it's a way for us to be able to give back. And again, I'm not going to be up on stage doing any preaching anytime soon. So, you know, teaching the kids is a lot easier. Just let me know when you want to. For me, I think teaching takes the focus off of me. It makes me be less self-centered in when I'm getting ready to come to church on Sunday in my prayer life. I'm thinking about the kids, praying for them, praying over what I'm going to be teaching. And so I think any opportunity I can take to be less self-centered is a good one for me spiritually. Well, thank you guys. I appreciate it. Thanks for coming up and for sharing. As we wrap up the morning, just a couple of thoughts. And I say this with some hesitancy because I want to be careful with my words, and I don't want them to be self-serving. That's not my heart at all. But I do think that based on the body passages, body of Christ, spiritual gifts mentioned, he mentioned, Jacob mentioned some in Peter, they're in Romans, they're in Corinthians, they're in Ephesians. They're all over the place. Because we have good works to walk in, because God calls us to be a part of a local church, I don't think it's optional to serve in a local church. And when I say that, I say local church intentionally because I'm not trying to leverage this and the Bible to get you to guiltily serve at grace. But what I can tell you as a pastor and someone who cares about you is, it is God's will for you to be using your gifts to benefit his kingdom. I know that for sure. It is God's will for you to be using the gifts and the talents and the abilities that he gave you to grow his kingdom. Now, many of you are doing that outside the walls of grace, and that's great. I would not reduce serving God and using your gifts to things that can be done here. But I would say that there's a reason that we have partners and we don't have members. Members tend to consume, partners tend to contribute. One of the things I am so humbled by in this church is that it doesn't go with just staff. Unless people are giving of their time, talent, and treasure during the week to sit on elder boards, to sit on committees, to be thoughtful about the church. We have some people because of their professional backgrounds who kind of mentor or pour into or befriend different people on staff. I've watched people in the church come alongside Aaron and begin to help him and give him some advice. I've watched them come alongside Kyle or Aaron Winston or me. And so there's different ways to serve the church and they're not all reduced to this sheet, okay? But here's what I would say. You ought to be doing something. You ought to be doing something to allow God to use the time and the talents and the treasures that he gave you to serve his church and build his kingdom. I don't know why. Well, I would want you to be going to a local church that you love so much that you wanted to partner with them and serve in some way. That's what I would say. Now, what Jacob said is true. And Jacob, the way you said it is better than I said it. We do want grace to be a place for you to heal, but not necessarily to hide. I know that there are people here because I've spoken with you. You have been burned by church. You have been worn out by church. You have been chewed up and spit out and something hurt you or something wore you out or whatever. And this can absolutely be a place to come and rest. But it ought to be restorative rest so that when you're ready to go again, you get going. So I would ask you guys to prayerfully consider, and in a minute I'm going to pray, Tamir's going to come up and give us a little bit more instructions, and then we're going to have a song sung over us while we kind of look over this and think about what we might want to do. Really quickly, if you want to grab this sheet, anything that might not be clear, Worship Team Tech and Production is back there. Those are, besides sound, largely low-skilled jobs, so you can do them, all right? I was joking around with David. David's running the live feed this morning and, uh, there's somebody else here. He's, he's being, he's being, uh, shadowed. Somebody's watching him to make sure that David doesn't mess it up. David runs a software company. So I'm pretty sure he can handle the live stream. And I was joking around with him beforehand. Like, dude, if you get stressed and you need to take a minute and get out of the sound booth, like go ahead. And we were laughing about it. So if you want to get, if you volunteer back there, that's, that's great. You can do that, but that's what the tech and production team is. And it's a vital team that we need greeters and ushers. That's if you're new or you've been coming here for a while, but you're not really plugged in, join one of those teams. It's a great entry point to join one of those teams, start meeting new people. It really doesn't impact your schedule a whole heck of a lot. You get here 15 minutes before you normally would unless you're late all the time, then you need to get here 25 minutes before you normally would and then you don't necessarily have to stay later but you get to meet a bunch of people, learn a bunch of names, shake a bunch of hands. That's a great way to get plugged in and involved. The prayer team is pretty obvious. We send prayer requests out to that. The care team is a big one, too, because we don't want people slipping through the cracks with care. And so the way that care works at Grace is first your small group leader is kind of responsible for you but sometimes people require ongoing care sometimes people are not in a small group sometimes the need is greater than what a small group can provide and we like to have a team that we can call on to go visit people who aren't able to leave their house or where they're living to make some phone calls. We even have a wonderful team of people that serve in something called Stephen Ministry that exists throughout a bunch of churches. And they provide ongoing pastoral care in ways that pastors just simply can't and don't have time for. And there's a whole training process with them. And they do incredible, incredible addition to that things that are not on here we have committees we have a finance committee that helped with the with the money at grace to make sure that everything's happening the way it's supposed to happen we have a personnel committee that serves as kind of the HR department at grace while we're while we're healthy and the staff development department so if you have a background in that, that's a great way to serve. We have a missions committee that determines who we get involved with and what activities we do outside the walls of Grace. So there's different ways that we can help and different things that we can do. But my heart would be, and what I would ask is, if you call Grace home, then prayerfully consider how you might jump in if you're not doing that already. If you call Grace home, take a few minutes right now, and prayerfully consider, God, what would you have me do at the local church where I go, where I can pour myself into? Maybe it's not on here. This sheet is a starting point. Maybe it's something else. Maybe you want to have a conversation about it. That's fine. I'd love to have that conversation. Maybe you can make us a little note on this and tell us what you'd like to talk about or what you think you'd like to offer. That's great too. Good morning. My name is Nate again, and if I haven't got a chance to meet you, I would love to do that. You came on the perfect Sunday to meet people. It's Hootenanny Sunday. So after this, we go to that parking lot there and we just kind of celebrate God and his goodness, reflect on the year that we've had. This is something that we do every year. We call it the sometimes annual Hootenanny because COVID made us not have it. So it would be dishonest to call it the annual Hootenanny. And we care about honesty here. So it's this sometimes annual Hootenanny. And I hope that you'll stick around and talk to some folks and say, hey, and again, if I haven't gotten the chance to meet you, I would love to do that. This morning is going to look a little different. You can see I'm going to be talking to a couple of different folks within the church this morning about service and about volunteering. One of the things that we realized, I guess it was in August, I was talking with Aaron Winston, our children's pastor, and we realized that we hadn't highlighted service at Grace and volunteering at Grace in a really long time. And we said, it's high time we do this. And then we thought, well, how do we want to do it? Normally, you just preach a sermon about serving and servanthood. And God wanted us to partner with the local church and things like that. And I would bet 75% of you could predict most of the things that I would say in that kind of a sermon. And because of that, and also because I'm always looking for ways to get other voices up here and in front of the church so that we can hear from one another and learn from one another, we thought it would be good and interesting to do this kind of like Ministry Partner Sunday. So in the summer, we have Ministry Partner Sunday where we highlight the different ministry partners that we have outside the walls of the church, and I'll bring them up and talk to them about what they do. And so we thought we would do that with some of our volunteers this morning. Before we do that, just to kind of set up the conversation to set you guys up as you consider your role at Grace or any local church, I did have some thoughts from 1 Corinthians. So if you have a Bible, you can turn there, 1 Corinthians chapter 12. I'm going to start in verse 18. The idea of the church being a body is all over scripture. It's all throughout, particularly the New Testament, particularly the writings of Paul. And there's some seminal passages where he talks about this, but this or Romans are probably the two, and this has a little bit more detail. So in chapter 12, Paul is detailing the spiritual gifts. He talks about this idea that God has given each of us gifts that we are to use in his kingdom. One of the verses I highlight often and say to you guys often is Ephesians 2.10, where it says that we are Christ's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, that we should walk in them. And so the idea is that as we live the Christian life, we are trying to determine, God, what are my good works and how do I walk in them? What do you have for me to do and to walk in? And so that ties in here in this idea that we're all part of a body. We all have a part to play. We all have a role to fill. We all have something to do. And so it's incumbent upon us to figure out what that is. This is what Paul says. But as it is, he's just talked about the body and the ear needs the eyes and the eyes need the feet and the feet needs the hands and none of them can exist without the other. And then he says, but as it is in verse 18, God arranged the members of the body, each one of them as he says, of you, nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable, we bestow greater honor. I love this passage, particularly as a pastor, because I addressed this a few weeks ago, I think when we were talking about Hebrews in August. But we can make pastors more important than they should be, more valuable to the church than they really are. We can start to feel like staff, the people who work here, we're the most important people, and everybody else is kind of auxiliary, and they're helping. I know that when I grew up in my church, I kind of sensed that. And it's really important for me to point out, as often as I can, in God's kingdom, nobody's more important than anybody else. Nobody plays a more crucial role than anybody else. Leaders are to have a higher degree of accountability because it's our job to teach truth. But that's not a higher value in God's kingdom. And so I believe in grace. All of our partners are equally valuable. Everything we do is equally valuable in God's kingdom and in God's eyes. And so you can't, there's some, sometimes there are people who serve behind the scenes and I will get from them that they don't, that they feel like what they do is kind of small potatoes and it's not. It's hugely important. Everything that we do as the body of Christ is hugely important and matters in eternity and matters to God and is valued by God. Because of that, I wanted us to hear from different portions of our body that play different parts and different roles, and maybe we can relate to some of them. Maybe we'll be inspired to serve. We all have this sheet in our seat, and I'll be going through this at the end of the sermon time today. But I wanted us to hear from people in the church who serve and kind of get to know them a little bit. I felt like it was appropriate on Hootenanny Sunday because we're going out to talk and to be communal and to be a family. So this is kind of a family meeting this morning. Mike and Holly, if you guys want to go ahead and make your way up here and grab that microphone. Oh, you have it? Okay. Is there a microphone over there? There it is. Okay, good. I wanted you guys to hear from parts of the body as well. These are Mike and Holly. This is Mike and Holly Anderson. Just to kind of... I want to say wet your whistle a little bit, but that feels like I don't want to say that. Just at the Hootenanny, ask Mike and Holly what their email names are for each other, okay? I'm just going to, I learned that when they first started coming here. We met for lunch, and I saw what their email names were for each other, and they're great. So ask them what they are. I'm not going to say them from stage because there's children in the room, but just ask them what they are. Mike and Holly, you guys have been coming to Grace for how long? Two and a half. Two and a half years. Two and a half years. And in what capacity do you guys serve? So we fill your tummies every Sunday with yum, warm, yummy coffee. That's what we do. And what made you guys decide that we want to do coffee every Sunday? Because they literally do it every Sunday. I'm like, we can get you extra help. They're like, we're good. We like it. We'll do it every Sunday. So what made you decide, let's get involved, and let's get involved at the coffee level? Okay, so my wife and I, we own our own businesses. so we have an opportunity to do every year, like you do in corporate America, is we do a goal-setting session. And so we go through all of our business plans and all of our personal plans about what we want to get accomplished. And so we usually do that the end of November, early December, every year. And so the year that we were doing this, our personal plans was how do we invest more time, resources, money to Grace? That's kind of where we were. And this was our first. We were eight months, nine months into Grace at that point in time. And just trying to figure out where can we get plugged in? What can we do? How can we get more involved? Small group is definitely something we had just started. And we wanted to figure out how to get further more engaged and so the sunday of after setting those sessions on um that service was all about not being a consumer of grace and how do you be more of a provider as a partner and it really hit it hit us real quick and we shot nate a quick email you guys were just you were just leeching off the the system. We were just little leeching. Yeah, you were dead weight. And so we had lunch with Nate and we said, how can we help? What do we, we want to get plugged in somewhere somehow. And he tried to put us back there in that big old booth back there. And we know nothing about that booth. So we weren't going down that road. And so coffee, obviously with COVID and being very sensitive to what was going on in the world. We thought, you know, that would be a great way for us to kind of really get plugged in and start that back up and really move on. So we just kind of jumped on it and went from there. Now, tell me, Holly, I think it's helpful to get a little bit of y'all's background. Not like, how'd you meet? Not that, but you guys met doing a similar job, and I think that the job that you did contributes to how you guys approach how you do coffee. So what did you do when you met, and how does that help what you do here? Yeah, sure. So Mike and I met. We did sports tourism industry for a long time, so the hospitality industry. We worked for convention and visitors bureaus, and it's all about hospitality and service. And we approach everything in our life like that, our new career now. So we expect a high-level, high-touch service. And so it's the little things, like writing the messages on the cups and having a flavor of the month in creamer. So we never go here. We're always, like, way over the edge, sometimes too much. But it comes from our past and how we met and just high-touch customer service, and we wanted to bring just our love of that to the people that we love here at Grace. Yeah, and that's why you guys are discovering in real time right now that you're going to be planning the golf tournament for us in the spring when we do that. We've both done that before. They're perfect for it. And so they take their professional background and they apply it to coffee. Now, coffee is underwhelming. That is a small thing compared to what you normally organize. But one of the things I noticed right away is the writing on the cups. I don't know if you guys have noticed the writing on the cups, but we don't buy them like that. They do it. And which one of you does it? Mike does it. I have the worst handwriting ever. That's his penmanship on the cups. And I saw him back there this morning. He's got a note on his phone where he's typed up the little messages that he's brainstormed, and then he's just alternating as he's writing those on your cups, just bringing a little bit extra to it every Sunday morning. How have you guys, it's a combo question, so answer it however you like. How have you guys personally benefited from getting to do that for now, close to a year and a half, almost two years? And then most importantly, how have you watched God work to use that bit of service to bring you closer to him? Yeah, we kind of talked about how those kind of coincided, we felt like. And I think so much of it is we love coming here. We love sitting in this building with people that we've just really grown to see as family and friends. And it's been cool in the short amount of time we've been here. And so there's a selfish part of it that's like, I have to get up and go. Like, if I just want to put my PJs on and have coffee and watch Nate for my house, even though he'll give me business about it later, I at least, like, I can't even think that way, right? Like, I know that I have a reason to be here. So there's that selfish reason of I know I have to be because I've committed, but it's also because we want to be here. So I think it's helped that, and it's just helped plug us in. Like, just being here in the morning, I think we've gotten to know, you know, you guys and staff better, which has been really cool, but also the people that serve, too, and really get to see what it takes to make this all happen on Sunday. And it's been really, you know, really neat. We were talking that the church that I was most involved with when I was a little kid and my family was really involved. This is the first time as an adult that I've been plugged in. And it has just felt like the most perfect place. I call my mom all the time and I'm like, I can't believe God brought us here. This is just, it's perfect and amazing. And what I've been looking for for a long time. So That's great. That's great. I love to hear that. Well, we're grateful to you guys for serving. We're grateful to you for planning the golf tournament. And it'll be in the end of April. And we're grateful for the coffee. But if you want to sign up for coffee, they've agreed to relinquish some rights for Sunday mornings. So if you want to partner with them and help or just give them some reprieve and do coffee with them, we would love for you to do that. Now, you've got to rise to their standards, okay? Oh, yeah, because their dog got a little bit of a struggle. There you go. They've been in here for two weeks. Elena couldn't be less interested in being on the stage right now. I couldn't believe. I knew that Jacob would be game. Jacob's fine. But I couldn't believe. I was like, if Elena wants to do it, I think people would benefit. And I knew that you were going to be like, no, not a chance. And then Jacob said, yeah, we'll be there. And I thought, okay, I'm not going to ask any questions. I didn't ask permission. Yeah, sure. Sure. So, um, a little bit of background on them and I didn't have time, nor did I think it was appropriate and sure service, but it would have been fun. Jacob is a huge birdwatcher. So if you like birds, talk to Jacob at the hootenanny and he will love to talk to you about it. I know. And I almost, I wanted to do a slideshow of birds and see if you could identify them, but maybe another time, maybe another time. But after they had been going here a while, Jacob and I got lunch and he told me a little bit about his background, and he kind of let it slip that he could play guitar, that he could lead worship. And whenever, in my position, you hear that someone's musically talented, you kind of go, okay, you want to get involved? I mean, that's a high skill position. That's pretty tough. But I kind of told him, like, I'm not going to tell Aaron. I'm just going to let you sit on it. You let us know when you're ready. And so Jacob's story, and it's one of the reasons I wanted you all to hear from him, is I'm kind of, I'm teeing this up for you a little bit. He had done it a lot, gotten burned out, found a new place, and wasn't sure when he wanted to re-engage and if he even trusted doing that. And so I thought his perspective on why you decided to like, yeah, let's go ahead and sign back up and play guitar and all that stuff. So if you kind of want to fill in the blanks there for that story, that's great. Yeah, sure. So, um, yes, long story short, I've been in praise and worship since seventh grade. So whatever, whatever age that is, 13, um, got burned out. I mean, every, every church I was involved with was a, was a plant we were tearing up, sitting down every Sunday. We were serving multiple roles. Um, and then adding onto that, I kind of got burned a little bit at church as well. So I kind of had a sour taste in my mouth. And we were out of church for a long time. And I was not playing for a long time. In fact, I think the first thing I told Aaron was I probably haven't played in a band setting in close to 10 years. So we can tell, but you're getting there. Oh, for sure. Yeah. Yeah, for sure. Yeah. Yeah. So my, my first practice Aaron, Aaron's like, yeah, come, come, come sit in. And then he's like, Oh, see you Sunday. I'm like, Oh, that wasn't at all talked about. Um, but, uh, but yeah, so for me, I guess leading up to it as a series of things, my wife dragging me here into church when I was stubbornly not wanting to be here, her volunteering to serve initially in the children's ministry, you know, just all these things that were poking me. My parents, my dad actually had been borrowing my guitar for over a year, and he brought it back to me at the beach vacation last year in September. And he's like, I think you're going to need this. And so everyone around me was seeing the writing on the wall, and I was feeling kind of the tug on my heart. And I think our conversation, which I was intentionally coming here and hiding. I didn't want to be known. I wanted to be unknown. Because the second you find out, you play guitar. That's right. Yeah, a need. Right. Um, so I was, I mean, and that was impacting my ability to connect. Um, I was, I mean, I think you even made the comments like, Hey, you've been like here for a year or more and I don't know a thing about you. I think that's how you preface like, let's get lunch. That sounds right. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But there was something else you said at lunch, um, that I think it was a week later. I talked to Aaron after service and I'm going to paraphrase it. And you probably said it much more eloquently than I'm going to do. Basically, basically you said you want grace to be a place to heal, but not hide somewhere along those lines. No, that's better than I would say. Yeah. You know, and I'm going to actually, and that was just like the final like stab of like, okay, you're, you're hiding you know, you're healed. You there's, there's writing all on the wall that you need to jump back into this. And so that was, you know, the series of events that led up to me jumping back into worship. But I think a couple months before that, I had worked as an usher a couple times, kind of dipped my toe back into the service realm. Yeah. Yeah. And, Miss Elena, in what ways do you volunteer here? This is active service for her to be here right now. Yes. Yes. Right this second is how she's doing it. I volunteer with the kids ministry. Yeah. Yeah. Elena does a kids' men, but we're going to bring up Shane and Carter to talk about that. You don't have to talk about kids' men. We don't even care about that. That's what on my notes are. Oh, that's okay. That's okay. I want your notes, but I also, one of the reasons that I think her perspective is so great is because if you are also a person who would literally hate to be sitting where she's sitting and having me talking about you right now, like my wife, Jen, everybody look at Jen. She hates this moment. Like if that's you, sometimes it feels like you got to be out front or whatever. And like you don't. Elena, she's remarkably crafty and creative. And so, yes, yes. And so two summers ago, and I hope I don't hurt anybody's feelings with this, but two summers ago, the Summer Extreme theme was Under the Sea. Is that right? And every week, every year, the week before Summer Extreme, the Sunday before, we decorate, and then we kind of add to it throughout the week, and then we do the stage. And when we did Under the Sea, I walked through here the Monday after they got done decorating and was like, who'd we hire? Like, what happened? Like, anybody who comes every year knows that was amazing. And they were like, Elena Farmer. And, like, she started coming. I was like, this was her idea? And so then we got her going on Summer Extreme for this year. Last year, I didn't even know she was going to do this. I don't know if you all remember, but the Christmas theme was Not Home Alone. And it's kind of a Home Alone feel. She did the auditorium in Home Alone stuff. There was paint buckets, and there was a war map on the drum thing. I didn't even know she was going to do it. I just showed up, and it was done. So quietly behind the scenes, she's using this gift and this skill to make the church better. And she's able to do it without ever having to do this or even get any public feedback for it. And then she's already working on the theme for next year's Summer Extreme, I heard. So we're excited about that. But, yeah, when you guys started coming, you jumped in pretty much right away, just kind of helping wherever you could help. What made you want to do that? I knew, so I guess we had, we'd been married for a while, but we had just had Wren, and so I think she was maybe a year or so. And I knew I wanted to have kids, our kids and future kids involved in church and growing up around church. I wanted them to see that God was like important in our family and to us, and it was a priority. I also knew that I wouldn't be committed and prioritized coming to church if I didn't get involved. So it was very important to me to jump in somewhere and get involved so I would be accountable to come. Now, which one is more fun for you? Is it the decorating part? Because there was one day this year where she and I think Faith and maybe Liz were here until like 1.30 a.m. decorating and getting it done. So y'all get after it. Like y'all work hard. And I would imagine there's an element of that that's fun. At least I hope there is. Absolutely. Which one do you find that you enjoy more? Do you enjoy them the same differently? What do you get from kids ministry? What do you get from doing that behind the scenes stuff? I absolutely love doing the decorating. Like that is, I think having a goal and an idea and just being able to plan it and then doing it with my best friends. Like it's just, it's like a girl's party at night at church and nobody's here with no kids. It's amazing. That's right. They tell their husbands, just need a couple more touch-ups. It's great. A few more clouds. Sometimes he brings ice cream. I mean, it's great. For the kids' side, I love it just because I don't know who I was telling, I guess maybe Aaron a few months ago, that it's amazing to hear the kids retell the stories that they hear and then just to know that you kind of had a part in that relationship that they're developing with God. So that's really cool to see and to be a part of. And what age kids are you with usually? So I am now back with two, three, but I had been with the K through, I guess three, K through two. Yeah, K through third. Yeah. And Jacob, or to either one of you, whoever wants to answer, she's very happy to give that up. How has God used stepping out in faith and serving, going, okay, for consistency's sake, I'm going to do this, or God, I feel like you're just pushing me in this direction. How has God used that to encourage you to draw you close to him, to, to build you up as a, as a believer? Yeah. So existing in that kind of rub or the friction that I was in coming to church, but not wanting to commit, I mean, intentionally, um, hiding, I wasn't, I don't think I was receptive to sermons. I was certainly not connecting to people. Um, and you know, you mentioned, I mean, intentionally, hiding. I don't think I was receptive to sermons. I was certainly not connecting to people. And, you know, you mentioned, I guess, what 1 Corinthians, but I think 1 Peter also mentioned something about gifts, about whatever gifts you received, you know, basically serve others and demonstrate God's grace in its various forms, paraphrased. That's good. But for me, I mean, the same reason I've always wanted to be a leader at work is the connection to people and be able to influence people and be able to connect with people to understand how I can best serve people. And that's foundational. I mean, that's arguably one of the biggest parts of my walk, period, right? I mean, I got saved in seventh grade. I started playing place in worship in seventh grade. So, I mean, it's been quite literally foundational to my walk. And so to connect back to that, you know, it's opened my heart in the sermons. It's opened my heart in prayer and quiet time. I found joy in understanding how I can serve others. And I think something else that we really hadn't discussed, but I was thinking about out there, is how his presence fills our home. My kids were six before they heard me play the guitar, right? So, or Wren was six years old. So, and now Praise and Worship is played constantly. I mean, they know what a metronome sounds like now and they probably hate it, but praise and worship fills our house every week. Even the weeks I don't serve, I enjoy tagging along and practicing and playing. So, I think an unintended benefit, right? And so my kids are singing along and they know more of the words to the songs that I play than I do. So that's great. It's unintended. And I think a huge benefit to kind of serving. I love hearing that. And is it just for the record is Aaron now writing you like a rented mule? I mean, are we just driving you right back to burnout? Oh, no, no, no, no. So, well, well, I don't know. Yeah, we have a real discussion here. So, you know, I had never played with in-ears, never played with tracks, you know, hadn't played with a band. He's like, you know, one week of practice and I'm on stage. And then he's like, part of the story, it was before Christmas and I think it was an acoustic set and it was Greg and Carly and Jordan up here. And I remember thinking the whole I was like I probably could play acoustic guitar would probably be nice and that was another thing that kind of pushed me on this journey and I mentioned that to Aaron and he wasted no time and giving me that opportunity to be the solo acoustic guitar up here so I mean I'm improving as a musician selfishly it's nice to have a praise and worship team that's pushing me there. And so, yeah, I enjoy it. And I guess kind of to connect further on to wanting to serve, and I guess people that are maybe apprehensive, everyone's super, super accommodating, right? I mean, I just took three weeks off. I just blocked entire months off, and he hates it, but I do it. And I send him pictures of all the fish I'm catching at the beach. And the birds you're seeing. And the birds, yeah, well, no one cares about that. In fact, if I could get as good as evangelizing the gospel as I could about birds, I think I would be in a better place. That's a separate service. Yeah, right. Yeah. Elena, what would you say, and the last question, what would you say to anybody who's considering serving, not just in kids, although you could, but anywhere who's not serving yet but they're thinking about it? This is more intimidating, sitting up here. I would say just do it. Try it, and if you don't like it, then try a different spot or try somewhere else. I don't know. I don't feel like... That's not what I had in my notes. That's not what I had in my notes. It's all geared toward kids. I don't know. You put me on... Yeah, you put me on the spot. Sorry, Elena. She's never doing this again. Never, ever, ever. This is the one time. No, but I think, and I think we would agree on this. There's a sense of accomplishment, right? There's like, there's plenty of days at work that I leave work and just battered and tired. And I'm like, what did I actually get done? I have no clue. But I think we both feel a sense of accomplishment. You know know we mentioned how we're impacting how she's impacting the kids and and the summer extreme and I doubt I'm impacting anybody musically but I have fun yeah but being part of a team right and and and and just having a sense of pride and what we're accomplishing here and what we're doing here at Grace. Yeah, I like that. Thanks, guys. I like that. You can leave, Elena. Shane and Carter. This is Shane and Carter Smith. They serve in children's ministry together. They've also served as small group leaders. Carter actually served on our architectural committee and helped us come up with the design of the floor plan for the building. So she was there for all the meetings. And really, we should just be talking to Carter. She's a lot more valuable to us than you. If we had to pick one. Carter does a tremendous amount behind the scenes. We have a few people who work behind the scenes that whenever I hear their name brought up for something else, I always say to the staff or to the elders or whoever, like, just be careful. Like, they do so much. Like, please don't ask them. Like, offer to take something else off their plate before we ask them to do this other thing. And Carter is one of those. She's, she's, do what? Yeah, right, right, to do this. And then Shane, Shane used to be a bouncer, so he's in charge of security all the time around here, and he's a Panthers fan, and we beat them two weeks ago, and that's great. Thanks for being up here. What's up, Wake Forest? Okay, Shane and Carter, where do you guys serve? Because you guys serve together. Carter, you're on the children's ministry leadership team too, correct? Okay, but you guys serve together. So I started out actually ushering, I don't know, five or six years ago as a way to kind of get involved. And then Erin kept sending us some nagging emails about how much help she needed on the children's side. So being a coach, I was like, I guess I can try helping over there. And I don't know, it was pretty fun serving over there too. Carter, for everyone else, can you tell us what over there is? We teach K-3, and that's the other wing. K-3, so kindergarten through third grade meet over there. Yes, so we teach the kids over there, large group and small group on Sundays. What does that typically look like? Because that can sound pretty intimidating to go teach. Sometimes know, sometimes it's eight, sometimes it's 20 elementary age kids. You get the lesson during the week. What kind of prep goes into it? Like, what are you guys doing behind the scenes so that you're ready for Sunday morning? And then how does a typical Sunday morning go? Well, Aaron and Julie set up absolutely everything and their team. They have a team behind them. They have everything set up. They email you the lesson plans. They email you kind of an outline for the morning and are available to offer and ask and answer any questions that you have. The kids come in. You do a little activity. You get to sing and dance with them and they get a lot more wild than we do in here. And then we teach them large group and then we break into small group for second and third grade and kindergarten and first grade. And sometimes it's five kids total and sometimes it's 25 total and we just get to all cram back in there. That's great. And Shane, besides Carter Volland telling you probably to do it, what made you decide? because one of the reasons I wanted us to hear from Shane is because we we get we get women to volunteer in the children's ministry more often than we do men and frankly men probably need to just step up to the plate because there's there's not for nothing there's there's there's two genders in all of classrooms, and they should probably be able to look up to both genders as they lead them and guide them and teach them about Jesus. So I think it's good for our boys to see men in their teaching. I think it's good for our girls to see women in their teaching and vice versa. And so we're always grateful when a dad steps up and says, yeah, this is something I want to be a part of. So what made you decide like, okay, yeah, I'm going to do that? Because I didn't, I didn't, I meant to mention this up front. I've asked the volunteers to come up in ascending order of difficulty. So Mike and Holly Anderson running the coffee, and I ran this by Mike beforehand. That's compared now, if we really wanted to get easy, we do like ushers. Okay. But I didn't bring up any ushers. But then the coffee team, right? And then there's the security team, which you just stand out there, and you don't have to listen to the sermon. It's a nice team, actually. And then being in the band, that takes some skill, but I think the hardest ask in the church, honestly, is what you guys do, the K-3. That's super intimidating. It's really difficult, And I think we just disqualify ourselves from the jump, but I don't think we need to. And so I just wanted to hear from you, what made you decide like, yeah, I'm going to take that plunge and go volunteer in that room. Yeah. I think again, just being involved with coaching, you know, coaching different baseball teams and football, I kind of knew what to expect from kids. And I felt like, you know, I could at least teach them. Like I said, Aaron makes it pretty easy on us. She gives you basically a sheet of paper, and as long as you read from it, you can pretty much teach kids a class. For me, I felt like it was almost a way to answer the question of being a disciple making disciples too because I don't feel like I'm ever going to be like a street preacher. I'm not going to go out there, and it's hard to talk to adults, you know, about those situations. But going over there and teaching the kids some of the basic stuff, I just feel like that's a way that you can grow. Just feel like you're, you know, making disciples, somebody else that's hopefully going to grow up and lead this church as well. I love that. I love that a lot. And, Carter, you know, I mean, you guys were here when I got here. Y'all, y'all, y'all been here a long time. You've been serving the whole time that y'all have been here. So it's a part of your DNA and who you are. What is it that makes you continue to serve, continue to come back, continue to sign up and let us put you up on stage and things like that? Like what, what's the joy that you get out of it? Why do you continue to do it? Um, I don't think Aaron would allow me to keep coming to Grace if I didn't serve in the kids ministry. No, we get, I used to teach first grade before I had my oldest son, Cason. So I think that's part of it is selfishly. It's something I do enjoy and I enjoy doing it more for an hour than a nine to five. But we get poured into here every Sunday and it's just a chance to pour into kids. And they are just like little sponges and so excited to be there and so excited to learn and learn about Jesus. They have no hesitation asking hard questions. They have no hesitation expressing their joy through dancing and singing. And they're just genuinely excited to be there. And I find that excitement contagious. And my favorite Sunday to teach back there is Easter Sunday. Oh, wow. Why is that? I mean, I've heard Easter sermons for 30 years. They're pretty good. They're pretty good over here. They're pretty great. The podcast is great. But no, they are so excited. And for some of them, it's their first time hearing it. For some of them, they've heard it for a few years, but each time, something new is clicking for them. The story is unfolding, and they are more excited about the Bible than most of the adults I know. I love that. And last question for you guys. How has God used your opportunities at service, whether it's leading a small group, serving on a leadership team behind the scenes, or serving in the kids? How has God been using that over the years to draw you closer to him and build up your faith? So, I mean, it's for us, obviously, it's been a way to get to know a lot of people in the church. You know, and it's also a way that we feel like, as Carter mentioned, you know, the church pours into us so much. It's a way that we can give back and really help this whole community grow. I mean, we're all here to try and, you know, promote the kingdom. So I feel like it's a way for us to be able to give back. And again, I'm not going to be up on stage doing any preaching anytime soon. So, you know, teaching the kids is a lot easier. Just let me know when you want to. For me, I think teaching takes the focus off of me. It makes me be less self-centered in when I'm getting ready to come to church on Sunday in my prayer life. I'm thinking about the kids, praying for them, praying over what I'm going to be teaching. And so I think any opportunity I can take to be less self-centered is a good one for me spiritually. And I say this with some hesitancy because I want to be careful with my words, and I don't want them to be self-serving. That's not my heart at all. But I do think that based on the body passages, body of Christ, spiritual gifts mentioned, he mentioned, Jacob mentioned some in Peter, they're in Romans, they're in Corinthians, they're in Ephesians. They're all over the place. Because we have good works to walk in, because God calls us to be a part of a local church, I don't think it's optional to serve in a local church. And when I say that, I say local church intentionally because I'm not trying to leverage this and the Bible to get you to guiltily serve at grace. But what I can tell you as a pastor and someone who cares about you is, it is God's will for you to be using your gifts to benefit his kingdom. I know that for sure. It is God's will for you to be using the gifts and the talents and the abilities that he gave you to grow his kingdom. Now, many of you are doing that outside the walls of grace, and that's great. I would not reduce serving God and using your gifts to things that can be done here. But I would say that there's a reason that we have partners and we don't have members. Members tend to consume, partners tend to contribute. One of the things I am so humbled by in this church is that it doesn't go with just staff. Unless people are giving of their time, talent, and treasure during the week to sit on elder boards, to sit on committees, to be thoughtful about the church. We have some people because of their professional backgrounds who kind of mentor or pour into or befriend different people on staff. I've watched people in the church come alongside Aaron and begin to help him and give him some advice. I've watched them come alongside Kyle or Aaron Winston or me. And so there's different ways to serve the church and they're not all reduced to this sheet, okay? But here's what I would say. You ought to be doing something. You ought to be doing something to allow God to use the time and the talents and the treasures that he gave you to serve his church and build his kingdom. I don't know why. Well, I would want you to be going to a local church that you love so much that you wanted to partner with them and serve in some way. That's what I would say. Now, what Jacob said is true. And Jacob, the way you said it is better than I said it. We do want grace to be a place for you to heal, but not necessarily to hide. I know that there are people here because I've spoken with you. You have been burned by church. You have been worn out by church. You have been chewed up and spit out and something hurt you or something wore you out or whatever. And this can absolutely be a place to come and rest. But it ought to be restorative rest so that when you're ready to go again, you get going. So I would ask you guys to prayerfully consider, and in a minute I'm going to pray, Tamir's going to come up and give us a little bit more instructions, and then we're going to have a song sung over us while we kind of look over this and think about what we might want to do. Really quickly, if you want to grab this sheet, anything that might not be clear, Worship Team Tech and Production is back there. Those are, besides sound, largely low-skilled jobs, so you can do them, all right? I was joking around with David. David's running the live feed this morning and, uh, there's somebody else here. He's, he's being, he's being, uh, shadowed. Somebody's watching him to make sure that David doesn't mess it up. David runs a software company. So I'm pretty sure he can handle the live stream. And I was joking around with him beforehand. Like, dude, if you get stressed and you need to take a minute and get out of the sound booth, like go ahead. And we were laughing about it. So if you want to get, if you volunteer back there, that's, that's great. You can do that, but that's what the tech and production team is. And it's a vital team that we need greeters and ushers. That's if you're new or you've been coming here for a while, but you're not really plugged in, join one of those teams. It's a great entry point to join one of those teams, start meeting new people. It really doesn't impact your schedule a whole heck of a lot. You get here 15 minutes before you normally would unless you're late all the time, then you need to get here 25 minutes before you normally would and then you don't necessarily have to stay later but you get to meet a bunch of people, learn a bunch of names, shake a bunch of hands. That's a great way to get plugged in and involved. The prayer team is pretty obvious. We send prayer requests out to that. The care team is a big one, too, because we don't want people slipping through the cracks with care. And so the way that care works at Grace is first your small group leader is kind of responsible for you but sometimes people require ongoing care sometimes people are not in a small group sometimes the need is greater than what a small group can provide and we like to have a team that we can call on to go visit people who aren't able to leave their house or where they're living to make some phone calls. We even have a wonderful team of people that serve in something called Stephen Ministry that exists throughout a bunch of churches. And they provide ongoing pastoral care in ways that pastors just simply can't and don't have time for. And there's a whole training process with them. And they do incredible, incredible addition to that things that are not on here we have committees we have a finance committee that helped with the with the money at grace to make sure that everything's happening the way it's supposed to happen we have a personnel committee that serves as kind of the HR department at grace while we're while we're healthy and the staff development department so if you have a background in that, that's a great way to serve. We have a missions committee that determines who we get involved with and what activities we do outside the walls of Grace. So there's different ways that we can help and different things that we can do. But my heart would be, and what I would ask is, if you call Grace home, then prayerfully consider how you might jump in if you're not doing that already. If you call Grace home, take a few minutes right now, and prayerfully consider, God, what would you have me do at the local church where I go, where I can pour myself into? Maybe it's not on here. This sheet is a starting point. Maybe it's something else. Maybe you want to have a conversation about it. That's fine. I'd love to have that conversation. Maybe you can make us a little note on this and tell us what you'd like to talk about or what you think you'd like to offer. That's great too. But if you call Grace home, partner with us, let's work together and let's build God's kingdom together and move this place forward.
