The Well, good morning. It's good to see everybody. My name is Nate. I get to be the pastor here. If you're joining us online, thank you for doing that. If you're catching up later in the week, we appreciate you following along. This is our third part in our series going through the book of Revelation. There's a lot of questions there, a lot of curiosity, a lot of mystery. And so I want to do the best that I can as we move through the series to help make Revelation more approachable and understandable for all of us, whether that means pulling back from the details and the weeds so that we can actually see the forest and get the point of this amazing book, or whether it means making it approachable so that we can actually understand what's happening throughout the book. Last week, my dad carried the weight for us. He did a phenomenal job. Many of you have said kind things to me about him, and I appreciate that. I was as surprised as the rest of us that he did such a good job. I was watching from the cabin that I was at going, huh, look at this. The dude's good at it. So that was really, really cool and a neat moment for us. So I appreciate you guys indulging that. And he did a good job talking about Revelation 4 and 5. And the point that he made was that God in chapter 4 is seated on the throne and that Jesus, the Lamb of God, is the one worthy to open the seals. That's what happens in 4 and 5. But there's a question that leads into the rest of the book of why is Jesus, as the Lamb of God, stepping forward to open a seal? What's the deal there? What's going on? And it's actually an important part in the narrative of Revelation, what's happening in 4 and 5. And basically, what's happening in 4 and 5 is that Jesus is stepping up to begin the tribulation period. This is when the tribulation begins. It's the official start of it. Now, some of you know that word tribulation. Others of you may not. Maybe we can define it. Maybe we kind of have a loose knowledge of what it is. But what Jesus is doing in Revelation 4 and 5 is he is beginning the tribulation period. And in Revelation chapters 6 through 17 describes this tribulation period. So the way that we're going to approach it as a church is for the next three weeks, we're going to talk about this together. This morning, we're going to define the tribulation. Next week, we're going to look at the events of the tribulation. And then the week after that, we're going to look at the signs in the tribulation. Because this is where it gets sticky. This is the tough part. Revelation 1 through 5, that's easy. We just did that. The last two sermons, Jesus comes back. Hooray. God establishes new heaven and new earth. Those are easy. These middle three, boy, they're tricky. They are tricky. This is where if you have questions, what does this mean? What happens? In what order? I'm genuinely interested in them. So this week or next week, as you're reading through Revelation, hopefully you're following along in the reading plan, or maybe there's been something rattling around for a long time. If there's something that you in particular want me to address and say, hey, this is how we understand this event, then let me know, email me. And I will absolutely, if I can't address it in the sermon, I'll figure out how to answer you personally. But I would love your questions because the thing is, if you're asking it, so are five other people, at least. So ask away and we'll kind of cobble this thing together over the next three weeks as we focus on this tribulation period. So this morning, I want to define the tribulation and what it is, and then ask, why is it necessary? So that's the first thing to think about. What is the tribulation and why is it necessary? Why does it have to happen? And the tribulation is quite simply, the most abrupt way to put it is, the tribulation is the seven-year process of God pouring out his earned wrath and reclaiming what is rightfully his. The tribulation process is a seven-year process of God pouring out his earned wrath on creation and reclaiming what is rightfully his. I will be up front with you and tell you, this sermon this week is the least excited to preach a sermon I have been in my life. Okay. I did not wake up going, yes, wrath of God. This is super fun in 2021. I'm actually getting on a plane this afternoon to go to Atlanta and just be around the stadium during the game in case they win tonight. And it is really hard for me to not focus on how excited I am for that and appropriately address the wrath of God in the service this morning. As we began the series, I knew that this was coming. And to me, it's the hardest part of Revelation. Not interpreting what's going to happen and trying to figure everything out, but for a 21st century audience, to actually, for us to wrap our head around the fact that our God is a wrathful God, that he is a just God. And so this morning, as I was preparing this week, I realized we can't really go on and discuss the events of the tribulation until we adequately understand the wrath of God that's seen in the tribulation. So when we ask, why is the tribulation necessary? Why is it necessary for God to pour out his wrath on his creation at the end of time? Well, the first answer that I would offer you is that God's wrath is necessary because his justice requires it. God's wrath is necessary because his justice requires it. My dad did a great job last week of defining holiness in a way that I had never thought of before when he was talking about the angels around the throne and they're singing to God. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty. And what does that word holy mean? Well, he defined it as being the intersection of God's love and God's justice. That they are perfectly balanced in God. And we love God's love. We love God's love. But we don't talk a lot about God's justice. And the reality is that his person, his very essence, requires a balance of love and justice. And the further reality is we don't want a God creator sovereign over all of the universe who isn't just, who isn't capable of wrath. Our own sensibilities insist that our God would be just. Here's what I mean. The Braves are playing the Astros in the World Series. The whole country is a Braves fan right now because everybody hates the Astros, right? They are the patriots of baseball. Everyone hates them. Now, here's why everyone hates the Astros. For those of you who don't know baseball and may not be informed about this, back in 2017, the Astros had a great season and a great team, and they won the World Series. And they kind of came out of nowhere when they did it, and I think they may have won the next year or the year previous, I'm not sure, but two years around 2017, they won the World Series. And it was kind of fun, because they were kind of a cool team, and they were kind of fun to cheer for. But then it came out that they were cheating. Like, not cheating a little bit. They were cheating a lot of it. And that's how they won those two World Series. And then what happened was, what did baseball do? What did the commissioner do? Did the commissioner bring wrath and justice upon the Astros? No, he'd like find the owner and I think the coach got in trouble. But none of the players who actually cheated got punished. And so everyone hates the Astros because it wasn't fair. It's not right. They cheated, they got caught, and nothing happened to them. And our senses of justice cry out and say, that's not fair. To the extent that, and I was so proud of my hometown, when their best player came up to bat in game three of the World Series, first time he had to play in Atlanta, the whole stadium broke out with chants of cheater, cheater, cheater. I'm like, yes, this is great. Our sense of justice is offended when things are not fairly litigated. To think about it in a more applicable personal way. Parents, if somebody did something to genuinely harm your child in a way that requires you to be in court and to prosecute them. And they are absolutely guilty. How offended would you be if the judge did not display justice and said, you know what? That wasn't you. You didn't mean it. You're off the hook. No, we want a just judge in the same way we want a just God. His nature requires it. And our senses of fairness and justice demand it. The uncomfortable side of that justice is his wrath. And make no mistake, when you read the middle sections of the book of Revelation, it reads very much like the Old Testament prophets. Two times in the book of Revelation, the phrase, the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God is used. In Revelation 19, when Jesus comes back, it says that he is going to tread the press of the fury of the wrath of God, which tells us that God's wrath does not only exist, but it is furious. We are told at a different point that God will send an angel with a sickle to take a third of humanity like grapes and put them in a wine press and press them with his fury and his wrath. The wrath of God in Revelation is unavoidable. And to pretend like it's not there is dishonest and unfair. So we have to come to grips with this existence and learn how to accept that this is a part of the God that we worship. To do that, I think that we can listen to the voices of the martyrs in Revelation chapter 6 to begin not only to understand that God's justice requires wrath and that we want a just God, but also to begin to understand the source of this wrath. It's helpful to listen to the voice of the martyrs in Revelation 6. This to me is one of the more poignant moments in all of scripture, and I'll tell you why in a second. Revelation chapter 6 verses 9 through 11. So there's this poignant scene in heaven. As Jesus begins to open the seals, and if you don't understand what the seals are, that's all right. We're going to talk about those next week. The rest of Revelation is scheduled out through seven seals, seven trumpets, seven bowls. And we're going to talk about that progression next week. But for this one, as this seal was opened, then there's martyrs under the throne at the altar of God. And these martyrs are men and women who have died for their faith. They were killed because they professed a faith in God. And they cry out, how much longer are you going to wait before you avenge us, God? We were killed for you. You saw the people from heaven. You know who murdered us. When are you going to punish the people who are harming your children? And this voice, the voice of the martyrs, echoes. And it echoes particularly with the original audience. Because I told you in week one that the people who received this letter endured great persecution. The generations of the church that immediately followed this time around 90, 95 AD endured tremendous persecution. To be a Christian, to proclaim and claim the gospel of faith in Jesus was to put your life at risk, was to put your family at risk. So the people reading this letter and receiving it, they cried out with the martyrs too. Yeah, God, win. How much longer? And here's how much longer before you avenge. You saw them take our dad. You saw them kill our mom. You saw them take my wife. When are you going to make that okay? And if we pay attention, what we see is that we cry out with the martyrs as well. We also cry out with the martyrs. Paul talks about this in Romans when he says in Romans chapter 8 that all of creation groans for the return of our king. When we have that sense that this isn't right, most of you know that part of mine and Jen's story is that at the end of last year, her dad lost a two-year battle to pancreatic cancer. Her dad was the best man I ever knew. And I will always be sad that Lily doesn't get to experience the glow of his love in her life. I will always be sad that his grandson will only get to meet him in eternity. And so we cry out, God, he loved you. He served you. He loves his grandkids. He cried when we told him that we were pregnant because he knew we wouldn't meet that one. How is this okay with you? And that's just ours. You guys have it too. Where you cry out with the martyrs. God, you could have done something and you didn't. When are you going to fix it? When are you going to make this okay? How are you going to make this right? And it's not an insistent thing. It's not a precocious thing. We don't walk into the throne room of God and demand. We sit at the altar and we humbly wonder and plea like, God, how much longer are you going to watch this? And we need to realize that that voice has been echoing throughout the centuries, not just for the things that we endure that seem unfair or seem like God could have prevented it and he didn't, but for all the things going on over the course of history. God sat in heaven and he watched the Holocaust. And the voice of the martyr says, God, how much longer? He sat in heaven and he watches the slave trade. That still exists. And we think, how much longer, God? He's seen the atrocities of people claiming his name in the Crusades. Evil meted out over an entire continent, falsely claiming him. How much longer, God? So at the beginning, when I define the tribulation as God pouring out his earned wrath, that's what I mean. He's been waiting. He is angered by the evil things that happen. He is angered and hurt by school shootings. He is angered that our sin has broken down the world in such a way that we lose people too early from disease. He's angered by that. He's hurt by that, that Satan has been loosed into his perfect creation and the people who listen to his voice, including us, have perverted it and made it something that it is not. He's angered by that. He's angered by us when we trample on his gospel and we presume upon his grace and we act like our actions have no consequences because we're so used to hearing about the love of God that we forget about the wrath of God. And it angers him. God says that vengeance is his, and he will take it. He's simply waiting. And when the martyrs ask him, how much longer are you going to wait to do, as I always say, to make the wrong things right and the sad things untrue? When will that happen, God? His response is, rest a little while longer because there's still more to be added to your numbers. It's not time yet, but it's coming. And so we see in listening to the voice of the martyrs and in seeing the response of God that part of the necessity of God's wrath and his tribulation is that God's wrath is actually working to draw people to him. His wrath is working to wake people up and to draw them into his eternity. If there are still martyrs who have yet to be added to the number in Revelation chapter six, then what it means is there are people in the tribulation period actively sharing their faith so that more people might know Jesus, so that more people might spend eternity in heaven. If you flip the page to the next chapter, what you see is a mass of humanity being ushered into heaven. And John leans over to the angel next to him and he goes, who are they? And he says, those are all the people who have accepted Christ who are coming out of the tribulation. God is using his wrath as a tool to wake people up and draw them near to him. And if that sounds like a contradiction, then let's think of it this way. In our house, we try to be calm. I try, best I can, not to raise my voice. Except at Jen. Boy, howdy. I really get after Jen. I'm just messing around. I try not to raise my voice. Now, sometimes, Lily, she's five. She's very much like me. And so, I can't help it. But most of the time, I'm pretty calm with her. And the reason I try not to raise my voice is, first of all, I want to set that model for her. But second, I want it to matter when I do. We raise our voice all the time. Eventually, I mean, you can see these kids. They're in the store. Their mom's yelling at them. They couldn't care less. Because mom yells at them all the time. So I want it to matter when I raise my voice. Because when I raise my voice to Lily, sometimes I do it because it's the only thing left that's going to get her attention. Right, parents? I tell her to stop. Don't do that. Put that down. We're not going to talk about that. I try to be as calm as I can. But sometimes I have to get stern with her. And when I get stern with her, I'm doing it to get her attention. Because what I'm saying matters. The same is true of God. Sometimes God has to get stern with his children because he's been trying to get our attention in other ways and we're not listening. So sometimes God gets forceful with us because you parents know if you pick your moments there, you can really get your kids' attention simply by being more stern with them. So God also knows, and we see it in the Old Testament, that sometimes to get the attention of His people, He raises His voice. He does not do it to intimidate or scare us, although that should be our reaction. He does it to draw us near to him, to get our attention. He does it because his biggest priority in all of creation is that you and I would spend eternity with him. That's why Paul writes that even though we endure pain for a little while, he considers it nothing compared to the glory that he's going to experience in eternity. It's nothing. It doesn't matter. So is God, and Jesus tells us, listen, if your eye's causing you to sin, gouge it out. It's better to enter into heaven with one eye than it is to have both eyes and not be in eternity with God. So sometimes God uses his wrath and his stern voice to get our attention because his priority is that we would spend eternity with him. This may be why Solomon writes in Proverbs chapter 9 that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Many of you have probably heard this verse before. And when I was growing up and we would come across this verse, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, we were kind of told that fear there is an awe, it's a respect. It's not being afraid of our Heavenly Father because our Heavenly Father is good. It's being in awe of Him, and that's the beginning of wisdom. No, no, no. It's being fall on your face, terrified of the Father. It's actual fear. On the holiday that we celebrate fear, this is actual fear. Being fearful of our almighty God creator in heaven. Being scared of what he can do to us if he were to so choose. Being actually fearful of him. Reading through the wrath of God that will be poured out on creation and going, that sounds terrible. And God goes, yeah, because here's the thing. As we go through Revelation and we see God's wrath meted out on creation, please understand, the only people who experience God's wrath are the ones who don't believe in it. The only people who experience the wrath of God are the ones who have said, please God, or the ones who have not said, please God, spare me. At any point, if we look to God and we say, God, you're God and I'm not, and I trust you, please spare me your wrath. He does. The only ones left to experience the wrath at the end of the tribulation, I am convinced, are those who have chosen obstinately to refuse to submit to God in faith. And so he pours out his wrath. And he pours out his wrath because God in his goodness sent his son to rescue us up to heaven to spend eternity with him. And we obstinately, some of us choose to not believe in the son that he sent. Instead, we spit on it. Instead, we don't believe it. Instead, we pass it off like a fairy tale. And one day, every knee will bow before our God in heaven. And the only ones who will experience God's wrath are the ones that have to be forced to bow. And it is not, to me, until we understand that, that we can begin to appreciate God's love for us. This is why wisdom begins in, oh no, God created the universe and I'm terrified of him. And God says, good, but guess what? I created it so that you could spend eternity with me and I love you. And all you have to do to be spared from that wrath is ask me. As I sank into this topic for this week, I began to reflect on the wrath of God. It actually occurred to me, something that I've long understood, but something that fits very well into this sermon and this idea right now, which is it is impossible to adequately appreciate God's love without being in awe of his wrath. It is impossible to adequately appreciate God's love without being in awe of his wrath. And I think it's actually good for us to take a Sunday and confront the fact that our God is just and his justice necessitates wrath. And for us to exist and tremble and for us to hear it said, yeah, we want to be as nice as possible to everyone, but one day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess. And you do not want to be made to bow against your will. We submit to God now and we spend eternity with him later. And I think it's good for us to sink into that reality because we talk a lot about the love of God and we should. We talk about our good, good father and we should and we talk about his grace and we talk about his forgiveness and we talk about his mercy and we should. Those things are good and trust me, I like preaching about those things way more. But I think that sometimes we talk so much about God's love for us that we forget he has every right to smite us. All the times that we've trampled on the gospel. All the times that I've presumed upon God's grace, knowing he would forgive me. All the times I've cheapened the blood of Christ on the cross with my action and my attitude and my obstinance. We were in here on Tuesday morning for Bible study and I was sitting right here and over there was a roach. And I noticed it and Shane noticed it, but it was a roach. And we're like, whatever, I didn't care. It was like 620. Live it up, roach. But when Britt Vinson, who was dressed up like a cowboy that day, noticed it. You like that, Kyle? Okay. All right, pal. There you go. I love Kyle. When Britt Vinson in his cowboy boots saw the roach, he got up. That was the end of that roach. We live our lives as if God can't do that to us. We live our lives as if that's not a daily reality. And we live our lives as if it would somehow be unfair if he did. When it's not. The most fair and just thing for him to do is to take us. Is to die for our sin. That is the most just thing. But because his incredible love balances his incredible justice, he sent his son so he doesn't have to smite us, and we walk around acting like that's not a reality when it is. And so it's good for a Sunday for us to sink into the wrath of God and to appreciate it. Because I wonder about me and maybe about you if we feel stagnant in our walk with the Lord. If we heard Steve talk about being on fire for Jesus and it's been a while since we have experienced that. If we give mental assent to the fact that God loves us, but we are not warmed by it daily and overwhelmed by the magnitude of the grace of his love for us, maybe it's in part because we haven't sat and thought for a minute in a long time about the wrath that his love is balancing out. About what he's sparing us from. About what it means for him to have every right to claim us and choose in his goodness not to. So my hope and my prayer this week has been that by focusing on God's wrath, it would actually inexplicably draw us closer to him and help us more deeply appreciate the love that he lavishes upon us and the things that John writes, like from his fullness he has bestowed upon us grace upon grace. I hope we can appreciate those sentiments a little more deeply today and feel God's love a little more closely today by reflecting on his tremendous wrath as well. Let's pray. God, thank you for your justice. Thank you for your terrible and furious wrath. We know that we would not want a God that was not capable of those things, whose character didn't require them. Father, I pray that if anyone can hear my voice, whether it's today or in the future, who doesn't know you, who has not bowed their knee, I pray that they would cry out to you today. That they would claim Jesus as their Savior and you as their Father. That they would simply ask to be spared of your wrath, which you are so anxious to do. God, would we be brought more close to you? And God, would we walk more fearfully of you? To give us a greater depth of appreciation of your love for us. It's in your son's name we pray. Amen.

The Good morning, Grace Raleigh. How are you doing? It's good to see you today. I'm Dale Rector, Nathan's dad, and I am glad to be with you today. Hang in there for a minute. It's going to be a journey. I've got two Bibles. It's a long sermon. So just bear with me. Maybe it'll go quickly if we try. But I want to say something to the Grace Raleigh family first, and that is thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Not just for moving my son out of my basement four and a half years ago, but for loving him, loving his beautiful wife, Jen, our precious, precious grandchildren, Lily, and now John. And we are so grateful for you. Within the sound of my voice are those of you who will volunteer and step up and will do something to minister to my family and to my kids. And I can't thank you enough. You will do life together. You will laugh together. You'll cry together. You'll tell them the word of God together. You'll grow together. And I couldn't think of a better place for my family than here. So thank you very much, Grace Raleigh. When I was a child, I was given this Bible to me by my grandparents. 1969. I was 11 years old, and they gave me this Bible, and of course, this King James Bible. But Matthew chapter 24 is perhaps the most read portion of this Bible during my young adult life. In Matthew chapter 24, if any of you don't remember or recall, it is the place in which the disciples asked Jesus, what are the signs of the end times? What are those signs? And when is your return? If you pay attention and read Matthew chapter 24 this week, you will see it mirrored and imaged in Revelation chapter 6 next week with Nathan. So pay attention to that. We were crazy about eschatology. What's that? That's the study of the end times. And we dove in and we heard sermon after sermon. In fact, we predicted that Jesus would come back in 1988. There was a book that was written that said 88 reasons why Jesus would come back in 1988. And I'm like, wow, really? It didn't happen. It didn't occur. He still hasn't returned. And it seemed like over the years, the eschatology speeches and the study of Revelation got to be a little quiet and a little silent because most people were wrong. Most people, when they tried to predict something or say what this means, they were wrong. I have another Bible in front of me. This Bible was stolen by, it's not a Gideon Bible. It was stolen by my son four and a half years ago when he came up to here at Grace Raleigh. And four and a half years ago, he took this Bible that I had as a high school student, and I never had a chance to write in it and to say something in it, you know, sappy and meaningful like, you know, the greatest ever, the great Nate, you know. I love you dearly, the best dad you've ever had. Nothing like that at all. I don't have the words. Until I was preparing for this sermon, I thought, I have the perfect words. And to my son Nathan, this is true. That's it. This is the word of God. In Genesis, we see the tree of life. In Revelation, we see the tree of life. In Exodus, we see the ark of the covenant. In Revelation, we see the ark of the covenant. In Joel, we see the Ark of the Covenant. In Revelation, we see the Ark of the Covenant. In Joel, we see the trumpet sounds, and the day of the wrath of the Lamb has come. In Joel chapter 2 and chapter 3. In Revelation chapter 7, we see the trumpet sound, and the day of the wrath of the Lord and the Lamb comes. In Daniel, we see the exact specific days of the tribulation period. In Revelation, we see the exact same specific days in that book as well. Over and over and over again, if you fall in love with the Old Testament, you'll fall in love with Revelation because it all ties together. It all links together. It's true. It's right. It's God's word. It's what he wants us to have. So I'm grateful for you guys and your study of the word. And I'll be going into Revelation chapter four. If you have your Bibles, you can turn there. But basically, you know, when Doug got up a couple weeks ago and he spoke, I thought to myself, Doug, it's really kind of funny and hilarious that you were given one verse. I was given the two easiest chapters in the entire book of Revelation, and you'll see how easy it is in a minute. But chapter 4 is a mirror image of Ezekiel chapter 1. And if you have Ezekiel 1 and you study it later, you'll see this same throne room of God. But John, 90-year-old John, is caught up into heaven. And he's caught up into heaven. And on the Lord's day, he's in the spirit. And whose voice does he hear? Jesus. He says, John, come up here. I have some things I want to show you. I have some things I want you to see. And he shows him where dad sits, where God the Father has a throne. And there's this throne. It's a majestic throne. And on the throne is a brownish image. It's an image of God. It is God. And it looks brown. And it's got an emerald rainbow around its head. Ezekiel says there are fire and metal around his waist. And there's lightnings and thunders that come from the throne of God and go out, and there's a brightness and a brilliance and a wonderment. The throne is set on a firmament of solid water and glass, and it looks still, Still to indicate the comfort and the sovereignty of God. And that's the picture we see of the throne room of God. And around the throne is 24 elders and four cherubims. And we get all enthralled with the brilliance, with the majesty, with the wonder, with the glorious look of the throne of God. And we forget what the point is. What is the point of Revelation chapter 4? It's so simple. It's so easy. Theologians miss it. They like to describe everything that's in here. And I'm going to tell you this, and you're going to go, well, that's not that bright. What's the point of the throne of God? God is on the throne. That's it. God is on the throne. He is on the throne. When Joseph was in prison, captive, God was on the throne. When the children of Israel spent 400 years in captivity, God was on the throne. When the first Passover came and the blood was put on the doorpost of every Jewish family and the death angel passed through and spared those children, God was on the throne. When Moses led the children of Israel out of captivity and 40 days became 40 years, God was on the throne. When Moses was put to the side and went up to the mountain and wasn't allowed to go to the promised land, Joshua went into the promised land with the children of Israel, and God was on the throne. City by city, they took over. Promised to them, to the father Abraham. And the Jews possessed the promised land, they possessed the Canaan land, and God was still on the throne. The period of judges came. We had a few good kings with a bunch of bad kings. We had a dispersion of the nation of Israel. The temple was destroyed. Again, the nation of Israel was taken back to captivity to Babylon this time, and God was still on the throne. They came back to Israel. 400 years of silence. Jesus was born. And Jesus was born of a virgin, came to this planet, and lived in the filth that Satan and we created. And God was still on the throne. The thorns were placed upon his brow. The blood came down. His hands were pierced with the nails. He was hung on the cross, and he cried out, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani, which means, my God, my God, why has thou forsaken me? God was still on the throne. He couldn't look on his son because of our sin, but he was on the throne. Remember that. At that Passover, he was on the throne. Jesus was put into the grave. Three days later, God said, come forth. He came forth. God was still on the throne. 47 days, he appeared to 500 people at one time and then ascended into heaven. And guess what? God was still on the throne. He was still there. Still in control. Still in charge. Now what happens from here? What happens from here? Well, we have 11 of the 12 apostles martyred. John sees 60 years go by. And 60 years go by and he's caught up into heaven on the Lord's day. He thought he died and went to heaven, but he didn't. He was in the spirit. And guess what he saw? Revelation chapter four, God on the throne. Now what's going to happen in Revelation chapter 6 and following is nothing more than a full court press, nothing more than a reclamation process in which God reclaims stolen property. And he comes back and he takes what's rightfully his to redeem the last person who will say yes to Jesus and to say no to Satan and to crush Satan underneath our feet is what Romans says. And guess what? During everything you encounter in the next few weeks with Revelation, as good and as bad as it may seem, God's still on the throne. He is there. He hasn't left. He hasn't abrogated his position. He hasn't vacated it. He's still there. Through your cancer, through your COVID, through your disappointment, through abandonment, through your addictions, through your loss of family, loss of loved ones, to the loss of a young child. Everything that this world can throw at us and this world system can throw at us, God is still on the throne. That's chapter four. Now you say, well, what are the four cherubims? Everyone wants to know about the four cherubims and who are they and where'd they come from? And at this point in the sermon, I would say, who cares, right? Because God's on the throne no matter what. But we've got this curiosity about us. Have we seen the four cherubims before? Yes, we have, Ezekiel 1. The question is not what are the four cherubims, but where is God? You see, when the four cherubims show up, you would expect to see God, because God made these cherubims, angelic beings, if you will, looked like a human, had four sides to their head, the one of a man, the one of an ox, the one of an eagle, the one of a lion, and they looked weird to us, but we've never seen them. And John saw them and described them is exactly how Ezekiel described them in Ezekiel chapter 1. And these are around the throne of God. They move in unison around the throne of God. They're all together, the four cherubims, angelic beings. And I've got this to say about what the faces represent. And most people are guessing. And I'm guessing as well. But the faces represent the very essence of God. You see, we are made in the image of God. When I picture God, I think of a man. The descriptions of God, he has a head and face and hands and so forth. So I think these angelic beings meant to reflect the very essence of God, which is man, which is one of the faces you see. The other faces you see is the very essence of God as creation. And I think he made what he likes. You become that which you worship. And these four creatures, these four cherubims, wherever they go, they're around the throne of God. Can you imagine someone watching you 24-7, 365? I challenge you. Follow Nathan around 24-7. You may all leave the church. I hope you don't. I hope you stay with it. Jen's got a lot of love. We were so grateful for her. But for 24-7, 365, these angelic beings are around the throne of God. And you know what they say? It's recorded in Revelation chapter 4 and verse 8. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty who was and is and is to come. What is holiness? What does that mean? Holiness is the intersection of love and justice. It is the attribute of attributes. It's the attribute that contains all the other attributes. It's where love and justice collide. Everything, God's mercy, God's long-suffering, God's love, God's justice, is all wrapped up in this perfect word called holiness. It means different, different, different. Unique, unique, unique. There's never been anything like God. There'll never be anything like God ever again. He is holy. He is different all unto himself. The perfect amount of love is sprinkled with the perfect amount of justice at the right time, in the proportion in the right way. It is God's way and he is holy. So who am I? Who am I to question the character of God? I think it's funny. Each of us periodically do this little thing, which is wrong, but we do it anyways because we're human. Well, if I were God, I would zap them. Right? I mean, just think of it. When I'm driving down the road in traffic, you know, it's like, okay, here it comes. I believe half the people on the planet would be gone if I was God. Really. My wife knows that's true. You can't, you did what? Come on, man. But we sit there and we judge God through our lenses and through our eyes and from our limited perspective and we say, God, why didn't you exercise justice quicker? Hitler. Six million Jews died. We sit in amazement and say, well, God, if you'd just zapped them a little earlier, we wouldn't have had six million Jews die. And we question God's patience and long-suffering. And then when he does zap somebody, we go, man, that was mean. I can't believe God did that. What's going on here? So, you see, we can't do that. Whenever God acts, God acts in perfectness of love and justice all the time. There's a second group of people around the throne. It was the 24 elders. People have said it represents 12 apostles and 12 representatives from the tribe of Israel. They're wrong. I'm amazed at how wrong theologians can be. And when you study commentaries, be careful. Be careful. The way I study Revelation is in light of what it says in other parts of the Bible. Because some people have a bent on how it should play out. Well, I believe in this, and I believe in that. Well, I believe in the Word of God, and I'm going to let the Word of God just speak to me and say, what does it say to you? It's not Mother Teresa, it's not Billy Graham, it's not the Stanley brothers, you know, it's not Charles Stanley, it's not Andy Stanley, it's not any leaders, it's not any brilliant, it's definitely not me, definitely not my son. We're not one of the 24. What are they? Angelic beings. Well, how do you know that? Job 38, 7, where God is basically, if you will, talking to Job and saying, where were you when I created? You remember that? And Job 38.7 says, when the morning stars were put into place, when the planets were made and the solar systems were made, The sons of God rejoiced. Yes. The angels were there during creation to prove what the Savior did in creation. And these are nothing more than angelic beings that have some authority and some leadership. Why do you say that? Well, I say it because of what is in Revelation chapter 4 and verse 11. You created all things, and by your will they exist and were created. That's what they said. They're not puppets. They saw it. They were there. Hebrews 11.3 says, You mean the law of thermodynamics is wrong? In this case, it is. God created something out of nothing. He created that which is seen out of nothing. Well, that just doesn't compute with science. I love the faith of a child. Don't you? I love my grandkids. I mean, you can tell them almost anything and they believe it, right? And some of you think they have been duped in believing that Jesus is real and the Bible is real and they just haven't learned enough yet. When you walk a child through salvation and through that experience in following God, they look at you and they believe it. They trust you and trust you what you're going to say. Then they start trusting the word of God. Then they start trusting the teacher. Then they start trusting the preacher. And it says right in here the word of God that God created. Well, you know what? That's good enough for me. I don't care if it takes you 4.5 billion years to get there. I don't care. God could speak and it could happen. Well, science says this. Who cares? I believe what it says. He made us. He created us. And the reason we don't like to believe in a creation is because we don't want to be subject to God. But the whole thing hinges on his creating us. Because he made us and therefore he owns us and we're subject to him. Now, as an older adult, and this church has a lot my age and older, we kind of return back to that simple faith. That simple time that we had as children. And we sit there and we go, yeah, okay, I get it. Scientists have changed the age of the earth 18 times since I was born. Maybe they just don't know. Maybe they weren't there. And I'm telling you, the reason I believe it is because if I believe God existed in the four walls of my brain and that was it, I'm in big trouble, buddy. I really am. I mean, really, seriously. I get up from my easy chair, I go to the other room, and I wonder why I was there. Right? Hey, honey, would you bring the crackers back? You forgot the crackers again. What about the pudding? Well, I ate the pudding in the kitchen. Did you leave the light on? I don't know. Where's your phone? I don't know. Is it on silent? I don't know. And right now, all of you are thinking, I need to check my phone. You leave the house and you say, did I close the garage? Did I close the garage? You drive back, it's closed. You didn't believe yourself. I mean, this is fun. I mean, this is a blast getting old. And the older I get, the bigger God gets. Nathan, when he was of age to go to college, and we were grateful, my wife and I were both crying. We were crying for different reasons. When he went off to college, he went to Auburn. Not my pick. I picked a Bible college. I said, you should go to Bible college for one year. He didn't necessarily want to be a preacher. And he said, no, I'm going to Auburn. Why? Why do kids do that? Because they know more than you, right? They're smarter than you. They've got this thing figured out. So he went off to Auburn and I said to him, son, I've got one requirement for you and one only. And he says, what's that, dad? This is going to be pretty easy. I said, yeah, it's really easy. When you return from college, I want you to be dumber. And he looks at me, dumber? You want me to be dumber? Yes. He says, why dad? I said, well, right now, you know everything in the world. When you finish your first year, I want you to know a little less and I want you to be dumb again. I checked with him a few weeks ago and I said to him these words, son, the older I get, the bigger God gets. The more miraculous he gets, the more wondrous he gets. And he said, dad, I think the exact same thing. And I'm like, yes, he's dumb again. I like it. John 1 says, That's John 1. The triune God created mankind. We were created in the image of God. And in chapter 5, we see a segue to the right hand of the throne of God, and it is on the right hand of the throne of God you see a scroll. It looked nothing like this. This is the best we could do. And the scroll represented the title deed to planet Earth. And the title deed would be opened one seal at a time. And you had a seal, you opened it, you read it. You had another seal, you opened it, you unscrolled what was written. Had writing on the outside and writing on the inside. The writing on the outside was a person authorized to take the scroll from God the Father, from his right hand. And on the inside was the playbook to the end of the earth, to the reclamation of this planet and us back to our rightful position where he makes all the wrong things right. It's the playbook. It's the rest of the book of Revelation, what was in the Father's right hand. And there was a search in heaven as to the person who was worthy to take the scroll out of the Father's right hand and then loose the seals that were there. And John, 90-year-old John, weeped bitterly. He wept bitterly. Why? It's conjecture on my part, but can you imagine for a 60-year period of time between when Jesus ascended into heaven and when John was called back up into heaven, 60 years had passed. When you became a believer in the New Testament church era, first and second century, it was a death sentence. It was a sentence by which you would die. So John had led and given the gospel out to the ends of the earth and basically had seen his friends die. 11 out of the 12 apostles died and John and John alone only remained. And I can imagine, because I have doubts as an old person, always I have doubts, and I sit there and I go, is this really true? Is this word of God really true? Is this right? And John, I felt like, he thought for a moment, what if Jesus is not coming back to reclaim stolen property? What if this is all in vain? What if those people died in vain? And what I've been saying for 60 years is wrong. What then? What are we going to do? The angel of the Lord said to John, John, there's no crying in heaven. We don't cry up here. Dry it up, buddy. Something like that. And the angel said, behold, the lion of the tribe of Judah, of the root of David. Whoa. Wait a minute. To a Jewish boy. That meant something. That meant something. The lion of the tribe of Judah. The root of David. That was the Messiah. That was the Messiah they expected to come the first time. And rescue him for all the pain. And set up his kingdom. This is the Messiah they expected to come the first time and rescue him for all the pain and set up his kingdom. This is the Messiah. This is the one I've been waiting for. This is the guy, the lion of the tribe of Judah. And when John saw between the throne of God and the cherubims that were around the throne, he saw this figure. And it was a figure as a lamb that was slain. Wow. The lamb that was slain. Now wait a minute. Let that sink in a little bit. You mean it's not pretty picture book Jesus with the nice flowing hair, all his hair, with a nice face, a nice body, fit body? You mean it wasn't that Jesus? No. It was a Jesus from 60 years ago he recognized on the cross with the crown of thorns, the nails in his hand. It was a lamb as if it was slain. He had the scars that he got from the crucifixion. And John, I believe his countenance probably changed from tears to gladness, recognizing that the Savior he had followed for 60 years was really true. It was really right. It was the right thing. This was the lamb that was slain because he saw the marks. You see, you can debate the resurrection all you want, but it happened. You can debate creation, but it happened. You can debate how God is going to come back. It's going to happen. Jesus was around with 500 people at one time. There's no scientist on this planet that has the key for that. Nobody has the key for that except God. Without the resurrection of Jesus Christ, there is no hope. Let's go watch football. Let's go play. Let's go eat. But we exist because of the resurrection. We are the Easter people. We do celebrate. Every week, the new church celebrated the resurrection of Christ because it was such a miracle. And John, 60 years later, saw that same Jesus in front of him and was just overwhelmed with joy and gladness. That is the resurrected Christ. Now, the disciples, I believe, had their marching order in a couple places in the New Testament. One is found in Matthew chapter 16. There's a location that's in northern Israel called Caesarea Philippi. And at Caesarea Philippi, there was this, what is called the gates of hell. I'm allowed to say that in church because it says it in the Bible, the gates of hell. And what was that place? It was a cave, and me and Nathan were there in 2014. It was a place where people came to worship false, dead gods. It was a place where they came to do unspeakable atrocities, things that were wrong, to try to please these false gods, dead gods. And Jesus had the boys there in such a wicked, vile place with all these gods and the pan-god, and he says to them this something very simple, who do these people say that I am? Who do they say that I am? Well, you're Elijah. You're John the Baptist. You're a righteous dude, right? You're a good person. And then Jesus stopped them and said, no, no, no, no, no. And this is the question of questions that everyone must answer. But whom do you say that I am? Whom do you say that I am? Whom do you say that I am? And I love Peter. Peter finally got it right with all boldness, with all everything in his gut. And I believe the decibel level got really high. And he said, thou art the Christ, the son of the living God. And what did Jesus say? Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed it to you, but my Father which is in heaven. And upon this rock moment came back in every one of the apostles' mind as the ascension of Christ occurred, as they gathered together, as Jesus conquered death, as we see him overcoming death and overcoming all obstacles. They were worried that they would die too, but now they weren't worried. Why? Because Jesus came to life. And when Jesus came to life, they approached Pentecost with a fervor and an intensity that they never had before. And that intensity, I think, they kind of looked like, after the ascension, I think they kind of looked a little like William Wallace. Braveheart. You know the story. Every time I see this, I think of Peter. That's William Wallace. What happened to William Wallace? He died. Hey, you guys don't know what I'm referring to. Google it. In Google, we trust. So just Google it. You'll find out what Braveheart is. He lost his life for the cause. And Peter died, crucified, upside down, dying for the cause. 11 out of the 12 died and were martyred because of what happened. You know what we need today in the church? We need more William Wallaces. We need people that are willing to die for the cause. You know, we just kind of want them to show up to live for the cause, let alone die for it. And why has it become so hard and so different? 2,000 years later, what happened to our intensity? What happened to our focus? I've got a hero of mine. His name is Randy Rye. Randy was a preacher. He left his church because of illness. He was supposed to have died eight times. He's got cancer. He's got organs that shut down. A couple weeks ago, he texted me and said, pray for me. I've got pneumonia. I'm hoping it's not COVID. If he gets COVID, he may die. It may be a death sentence for him. Randy, everywhere, he has no money. He has two nickels to rub together. But he loves the Lord with all intensity. And you know what he does? Everywhere he goes, he says to the doctors, to the nurses, to the patients without hope, he says, I want to tell you about Jesus. And I don't know a better place than in a hospital to tell somebody and get them prepared for eternity. But that guy, he approaches the gates of hell and he says, I'm going to tell this last person about Jesus. In our offices, God is there. Tell people about Jesus. Now, how can we do that today? How can we be the person with intensity today that lives out its Christianity with all fervor? I don't know about you. I haven't checked with this church yet. You're probably not typical of every North American church because Nathan's here. You're probably a little different. But every church I know of has a need for children's ministries. Always. Always a need. Hey man, it's the next generation in there. It's an opportunity to teach and train the next generation. Aaron should have a waiting list of names for people to do childcare. Look, you can hear Nathan on video. We know that. So go sit with the kids. Tell them about Jesus. Well, I don't know what to do. Well, Moses didn't either, but he did it. We need people to step up. What if we had twice as many people step up for children's ministries? What if we had a need come about and twice as much money came in? What about if we had a missions trip and twice as many people signed up for it as could go. What about if we asked for volunteers to serve to love our neighbors and twice as many people showed up? We've lost our intensity. John was the bishop of the church of Ephesus. And at that church, if you read the first two and three chapters of Revelation, you'll find out that the church of Ephesus lost its first love. And John was the bishop there, and he held some responsibility for losing that first love. And they were admonished by God that, hey, you need to get that first love back. Maybe that's what we need to do. I believe when John went back, he was different. And things were different from that point on. Now, if you all would do me a favor and go ahead and stand up, we're going to have the reading of the word of God, and then we're going to transition right into worship at the same time. But John went from Patmos to paradise, from paradise back to Patmos. In one year, he left Patmos and went back to Ephesus. And for five years, he lived. And then five years later, he died. In that five-year period of time, he discipled many young person. Hey, who would like to learn at the feet of John, one of the apostles, particularly after he'd been up to heaven? Well, I would. That would be neat. And so John went back to Ephesus and he discipled a young man, 25 years old, by the name of Polycarp. Polycarp became the bishop at the church of Smyrna. He died a martyr's death in 155 A.D. He had somebody else he trained, Irenaeus, which gave us all the doctrines that we preserve today. The grandchild, if you will, the spiritual grandchild of the apostle Paul. Or, I'm sorry, John. And you see, it pays to disciple one another, to disciple our kids. And I believe John's life ended well with discipling one another. He also had a song. He had a song he learned when he's revelation experience and it's found in verses nine through 13. And it went something like this. And I heard a voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures and the elders, and the number of them was 10,000, and thousands and thousands saying with a loud voice, worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing. And every creature, every creature, which is in heaven and on earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea and that are in them, I heard saying, blessing and honor and glory and power be to him who sits on the throne and to the lamb forever and ever.

We serve a God who's working through time to bring about His will and ultimately our good. We see the evidence of His sovereignty in the book of Genesis with the life of Joseph. To know and understand the story of Joseph is to get a glimpse into the very heart of God and to be assured that we can trust His plan. Last week we heard about Jacob and collectively wondered why God would choose to bless someone who at times acted so very ungodly. We were comforted to learn that God blessed Jacob because he had promised him that he would, and our God always keeps his promises, no matter our behavior. This week, we will see God make a promise to Joseph in the form of a dream, but immediately be forced to wonder if and how God will actually keep his promise. In the end, Joseph will be compelled to decide if he trusts God and trusts that despite uncertain circumstances, he has a plan. Well, good morning, church. It's good to see everybody. Thank you for being here today. If I haven't gotten the chance to meet you yet, my name is Nate, and I would love to get to do that after the service. Thank you for that. Those were fantastic. This is the second part in our series called He Has a Plan, where we're going through the life of Joseph together. And so just as a reminder, it's a seven-week series, and the way that I'm looking at it and thinking about it as I write the sermons and think about how to weave them together is with the license that this is one big, long, seven-week sermon. Again, these sermons are not designed to stand alone by themselves and make the traditional point that you go home with thinking about, but rather each as a setup for the next as we follow the narrative of Joseph's life through scripture. And we're going to be spending a lot of time each week in the narrative, in learning the story, and thinking through what it would be like to walk through the story. Because I believe that honors the text. I believe that honors God's word that people have given their life to, have died for, have preserved through the years. And there's a reason that the author of Genesis recorded these stories. There's a reason that they choose the details that they do. And so we honor those stories and we honor the text and we honor our God by taking our time and going through the stories, not necessarily mining for things that can matter to us right now, primarily, but really as a vehicle to learn about God and his story as it's revealed in the stories of the Bible. So we're going to sink into them as we move through these next now six weeks. Last week, as you were reminded on our video there, that we started in the life of Jacob, Joseph's dad, whose name was later changed to Israel. And we picked up some important dynamics there, too, that are very relevant to the story this morning. The first is those promises that were made to Abraham that Jacob wanted to attach himself to. Abraham is Jacob's grandfather, Joseph's great-grandfather, and Jacob wanted to attach himself to those promises. And we're going to see those come up again today. And then we also learned, and this becomes very important, that Jacob had two wives. He married first Leah. He got tricked into marrying Leah by his uncle Laban, which is a really dirty trick. I mean, that's up there in terrible things to do to somebody, marry off a daughter that they're not interested in and then be like, well, you're stuck with her now. How must that have made Leah felt? And then he married the one that he really loved seven years later, Rachel. And what we didn't talk about last time that's worth mentioning now is that Leah was able to begin to produce male offspring with no problem at all, which was a huge deal in the ancient world. That's what you wanted was male offspring. And so Leah was able to do that with great efficacy. She had a bunch of kids, seven or eight boys. But Rachel really struggled to produce a male offspring. And it was years and years that went by of the struggle for her, which is a struggle that we see often in the Bible. Which is why I do very much think that God is near and cares deeply about those people, particularly those women who struggle to have the children that they want so desperately. That theme comes up again and again in the Bible, and Rachel is a part of that theme. But we see her eventually have a son, and his name is Joseph. Joseph is the firstborn son of the wife that Jacob really deeply loved. So we finished the narrative last week. Jacob had just encountered his brother Esau, and then he was moving into the land of Canaan, the land that was promised to his grandfather Abraham, and kind of setting up life and finally able to live the life that he had always wanted to lay hold of. And that's kind of where we pick up the story. So we turn over a couple of chapters, and we're in Genesis chapter 37, which is where we're going to be all morning this morning, if you have a Bible and you want to turn there. And we pick up the story when Joseph is 17 years old and they're living in the land of Canaan, what we now know as Israel. I'm going to begin reading in verse 2 and then verse 3 and 4 will appear on your screen. But this is where we pick up the story. Joseph, being 17 years old, was pasturing the flock with his brothers. He was a boy with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father's wives, and Joseph brought a bad report of them to their father. Now Israel loved Joseph more. Israel is Jacob. Remember when Jacob had the encounter with, we think, potentially Christ, his name would change to Israel. So now Israel loved Joseph more than any other of his sons because he was the son of his old age. And he made him a robe of many colors. But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peacefully to him. So there's a lot going on in the family dynamics there in those verses. But what we see is that Joseph, like I said, is the favored son. He's the firstborn son of Rachel, but he's got a lot of brothers. Joseph has 11 brothers, 12 sons in all, and they would become the 12 tribes of Israel when they move into that land later on in the time of Moses and Joshua. But right now they're just 12 individual dudes, and Joseph is younger than most of his brothers. The oldest, Reuben, was likely in his early to mid-30s by the time Joseph is 17 years old. So the dynamic is the patriarch of the family, Jacob, has two wives, and each wife has a servant that he uses as a concubine that each bear him some sons, but he's got a bunch of sons. But his first son from Rachel is the one that he loves the most. He's got another son from Rachel named Benjamin, and it's important that we remember that name because in week six and seven, we're going to encounter Benjamin again, and this is going to matter. But Joseph is his favorite son because that's from his favorite wife. Now, how do you think that made Joseph's brothers feel? These guys who are grown men, who are grown adults, and they're doing the hard work of the flocks. Jacob's not, he's not working with the herds anymore. He's not doing any of the stuff to generate the wealth. It's his sons that are doing it. And he's made it very clear to his sons that work the hardest that you are not my favorite, that Joseph is my favorite. This was, it's easy to say, a very unhealthy family and family dynamic. In the midst of this, Joseph is a 17-year-old, is out with the herds and his brothers. And this was a nomadic people. So Jacob was kind of the central hub. His camp was kind of the central hub. And then his herds were out in the countryside all around them. You could travel for a day before you would get to his sons and the flocks that they were tending. So they're pretty dispersed. And so Joseph comes back to his dad, Jacob, and he gives him a bad report of his brothers. Reuben doesn't know what he's doing. If Tally can't shear sheep worth a darn, they're terrible at this. They're selling them for peanuts. It's a bad operation out there. And he goes back and he tells on his brothers. And while he's back there telling on his brothers, his dad gives him the famous coat of many colors that we've probably all heard of before. And we might wonder, what's it matter that it was a multicolored coat? And I could get into all the stuff about how expensive it was to dye materials and what colors things normally were. And they were monochromatic and very easy to make and all that stuff. But suffice it to say, this is Joseph or this is Jacob in no uncertain terms, letting his sons know, this is my favorite son. I know that it's kind of been implied before. I know that you guys could probably figure this out, but now you need to know this. He's the guy. He's my favorite. It's not too dissimilar from the idea of somebody having a bunch of sons and whenever the son gets to be driving age, he buys them a truck, but it's a beater of a truck, like an old Ford Ranger with 180,000 miles on it that barely gets down the road. And then when Joseph comes of age, dad buys him a brand new F-150 with all the bells and whistles. And he takes that F-150 and he drives back to the brothers and he says, look at this truck. Joseph was incredibly unwise in this season of life. So he goes and he wears the coat around his brothers, which if it were me, I would thank you, dad, and I would fold that up and put it in my tent and I would come back to that later, but I wouldn't go wear it in front of my brothers. But this is what Joseph does because Joseph is dumb. And if you don't believe me that he's dumb, that he's just a dumb, bratty, snot-nosed 17-year-old kid, look at what he does. Joseph has some dreams. And this is important because Joseph has a gift from God that we'll see laced throughout the story as a dream interpreter, an interpreter of dreams. And I'll say up front before we read these, that there's nothing in the text that says that these dreams were from God, but all of the context around the text and all of the context around the life of Joseph suggests very much that these dreams are from God. And so I feel like I'm on solid footing if I were to espouse to you the idea that these are dreams that represent promises from God. But just know in your own thinking and the way you process the story yourself, it doesn't say that in scripture. That's just a license I'm taking with the context within which we find the dreams. We're going to look in 37 beginning in verse 7. These are the dreams that Joseph has. He says, So he has two dreams. In one dream, it's all equals, sheaves of wheat, stalks of wheat. And all of the wheat bows down to one wheat. And Joseph says, I'm the one. They were bowing down to me. Well, he has 11 brothers, so it's pretty obvious the symbolism here. And they respond in kind. Are you saying that you're going to rule over us? And then he has another dream. And in this dream, it wasn't just the planets, but the sun and the moon that bowed down to him as well, indicating his father and mother. And so the brothers resented him even more. But if you keep reading down into verse 10, what you'll find is it said that Jacob took this to heart. Jacob didn't get ticked yet because he kind of knew something was going on with this Joseph kid. He had already experienced in his life how God brings about his promises in unexpected ways. And this was really just a way of putting the writing, of taking the writing on the wall and putting it in front of their faces. Because the technicolor coat and all the other things indicated that Joseph was going to be the one to rule over his brothers. You'll remember from last week with the idea of birthright and blessing, that in the ancient world, the firstborn son received a double portion of inheritance from his father when his father passed away, and the firstborn son assumed the authority of the father if the father was incapacitated or passed away. So for Joseph to be the one that's favored above and beyond his other brothers, the writing is on the wall that one day all the older guys, Dan and Reuben and Naphtali and all the others, are going to be working for Joseph. And so it's at this point that I think it's worth just pausing and thinking about what Joseph is doing right here. Put yourself in his shoes. Pretend you're Joseph. And in your family dynamic, you know that you are your dad's favorite child. You also know that you have 10 brothers who are older than you. The oldest of whom is probably in his mid-30s. The rest are somewhere in their 20s. It's a whole swath between 17 and 35. And you know that they hate you. They can't stand you. They loathe you. They resent you. They do not want to work for you one day. And yet, your dad loves you and is going to elevate you above all of them. And so one day, you're going to have to find a way to get these guys to continue to work for you and produce for you and run the clan with them. These relationships are important. If Joseph is forward-thinking at all, which he was a 17-year-old kid, I don't know a single 17-year-old boy that is forward-thinking beyond prom. But if Joseph was forward-thinking at all, he would have understood, I'm going to have to lead these guys in the future. Me having a harmonious relationship with them is going to be pretty essential to our combined success. And so he ought to have slow played it. He ought to have been humble and played those things down. But instead he shows up wearing the coat instead of tucking it away and saving it for later. And if you had those dreams and you're Joseph, would you then go to your brothers who, by the way, in a land with no military and no police, no recourse for you, this is a place where might makes right. Are you going to walk up to them and be like, guys, I had a dream. Guess what it was? We were all weak, right? You with me? And then you guys bowed down to me. And then I had another dream. And you guys and mom and dad did too. How you like that, suckers? It was incredibly dumb and incredibly arrogant, incredibly bratty. At this point in his life, and we're going to talk about this more in a minute, because it's a stark transition from who Joseph becomes. But at this season of his life, Joseph is a snot-nosed 17-year-old brat. He's the worst kind of rich kid. He's kind of a terrible human, and he's rubbing his brother's noses in it. And so, one day, his dad says, go out to your brothers and check on the herds. And so off he goes. He goes to where his brothers are supposed to be, and they're not there. But someone points him in the right direction. He goes and he finds his brothers. As he's approaching, his brothers see him approaching and they begin to talk. And they say, hey, here's Joseph. He's coming. Let's just kill him. Let's just kill him and we'll tell dad that he's dead. And the thinking had to be, and then one of us can inherit the promises and we don't have to worry about that. One of us can be in charge of the family. We won't have to submit to Joseph. He's a jerk. That's going to be a terrible life to have to submit to this guy for the rest of our life. He's totally unbearable. Let's just kill him. And we'll tell dad that an animal got him. And they said, yeah, okay. Well, then the oldest son, Reuben, heard of this plan. And he was like, guys, let's not kill him. Let's just throw him in a pit. And in that way, he effectively saved Joseph's life, which is why to this day, the Reuben is the king of all sandwiches. I don't know if you guys ever knew that by that connection in scripture. They teach you that in seminary. So they decided to throw him in a pit. And then Reuben's off doing something else. I don't know what Reuben's doing. And Judah, one of the younger brothers, says, guys, what are we doing with Joseph in a pit? We can't make any money off of him. It doesn't do us any good. What are we going to do? We can't take him out now. He's going to tell dad on us. We're going to have to kill him. What do we get if we kill him? Nothing. Let's sell him. Here come the Midianites. They're known slave traders. Let's sell them to the Midianites. And at least we can make some money off of this, and then we'll tell dad that he's dead. So that's what they do. The Midianites come by. They sell Joseph to them. He's now a slave. They take the coat of many colors and they tatter it and they beat it up and they dip it in animal blood and they carry it home to Jacob and they say, we're so sorry we found this coat as we were coming back. It looks very much like some wild beast got to Joseph and killed your beloved son. We're so sorry, Dad. And then they grieve with him. And so Joseph goes from next in line to be the head of a tribe, the head of this clan, to on some ox cart in shackles, heading to a foreign country to be a slave. And it seems worth it to pause here and make note of this point, because this is not the Joseph that we know. When I think of Joseph, when I think of the Joseph of the Old Testament, I think of a man that personifies consistent obedience. I think of a man who at every turn does the right thing. I think of a man who we would all do well to be like Joseph. He is a moral exemplar in the Old Testament. Next week, we're going to look at his outright commitment to his own purity of heart and of spirit. I think of Joseph as a character to be attained to, of someone that I want to be like, who does the right thing all the time, no matter what. But in chapter 37, that's not the Joseph that we see. So there's a change that happens between chapter 37 and the rest of Genesis through 50. And I think that change is what's happening to him right here in this passage. And it makes me believe that humility always precedes obedience. Humility always precedes obedience. A humbling will happen before we can walk in the obedience that God asks of us. I'm not talking about little pockets of obedience. It's possible to be prideful and still obey in places. But what I'm talking about is it is impossible to live the obedient life that God calls us to. It is impossible to submit ourselves to God's word and to submit ourselves to God's will and his plan if we have not been humbled, if we are living arrogantly. Isn't this the fundamental agreement with salvation? Isn't that how it starts? Someone who is not a believer coming to the end of themselves, coming to a place where they say, you know what? I think I've been wrong about faith. I think I've been wrong about religion. I've been wrong about trying to be the Lord of my own life. God, I'm tired of doing it my way. I want to do it your way. Isn't there a fundamental submission in the obedience of salvation? And what is obedience besides agreeing that, you know what, I think that your way is better than my way? With your kids, we have a five-year-old. She has to choose to obey us. She has to choose to believe and humble herself and say, I'm not right here. You guys must be right, I'm going to trust you. Humility always precedes obedience. And if you think about it, how is it possible to become more Christ-like? How is it possible to be more like Jesus and carry a prideful and haughty spirit through life. Someone who is described as gentle and lowly in heart. How can we become more like that if we're prideful in ourselves? How can we produce the fruit of the Spirit? Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. How can we produce those things? How can those things be produced in our life if we are walking in a prideful, haughty arrogance? If we walk out and we look at our house and we say, look at what I bought, look at how successful I am. If we look at our cars and say, look at what I drive. If we look at our friendships and say, look at who they are. If we look at ourselves in the mirror and say, look how good I look, which is a particular struggle of mine. And how can we look at the things in our life and attribute those things to ourself? Look at what I've built. Look at what we've done. Look at who I am. How can we walk through life thinking that we're right about everything and that the people who disagree, who deign to disagree with us are stupid and misinformed and watch the wrong cable network that they shouldn't watch? Like how can we walk through life thinking that we're right about everything and that people who disagree with us must be inherently wrong about everything and yet walk in the humility that obedience requires? How can we think highly of ourselves as Joseph did and yet walk in the humility that obedience requires. We can't. And those of you who have been around long enough, which is approximately seven years, after seven years of life, you ought to have figured this out. Life has a way of bringing us all low, doesn't it? Life will humble you. One minute, you'll think you're the best. The next day, you feel like the worst. Life has a way of humbling us. And so I think the option for us, if we'll accept that the obedient life that God calls us to follows humility. And we'll accept that humility is going to happen. The question becomes, do you want to be humbled the easy way or the hard way? Do you want in your prayers to ask God of it, God, please keep me humble. God, please remind me of how much you love me. Please remind me of my own sin that you've forgiven in me so that I don't think overly hypocritically about other people and condemn others. Do we want to be people who pray and ask for God to keep us humble in what I believe is a gentle and loving way that our God does it? Or do we want to, like Joseph, be broken into humility? Not because God seeks to break us, but because life humbles us. How do we want to be humbled? The easy way or the hard way? This may be why Proverbs says in chapter 16 that pride comes before the fall, that a haughty spirit comes before destruction. This may be why James says in chapter 4 that God opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble. There is a profound change in the life of Joseph, and I think it has everything to do with the humbling that he went through here. And the other thing worth pointing out, particularly for those of us in the room who are starting out our adult life, God had plans for Joseph. God made a promise to Joseph. Your brothers are going to bow down to you. Even your dad and your mom are going to bow down to you. God made that promise to him. There was a plan for Joseph. The problem was Joseph wasn't ready for that plan. The problem was the current version of Joseph was going to muck that one up. So Joseph has to go through a humbling and a changing so that when that plan arrives, he as a person is ready for it. And for many of us, sure, God has a plan for you. God wants things for you. God has designed you to do and accomplish certain things and to experience certain blessings and to be used in certain ways. The problem is you're not ready for God's plan yet. So His Holy Spirit grows us and humbles us and brings us to a place where our character can handle the plans that He has for us. So if it feels like you're treading water, if it feels like you're not accomplishing the things that you want to accomplish, or that you're not yet where you feel like you want to be, or even where it feels like maybe God has told you that you would be, I'm not saying it's the reason, but there's a chance that the current version of you simply isn't ready for the plans that God has for you. And so we're going to need to go through a humbling and a changing. At the end of this chapter, we stop at this perilous place for Joseph. Verse 36 in chapter 37 sums it up this way. It says, Meanwhile, the Midianites had sold him in Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, the captain of the guard. This is where we will leave the story. We see this picture of a snot-nosed kid who can't get out of his own way, who angers his brother so deeply that they sell him into slavery and they go back and they tell his dad Joseph is dead. And Joseph goes from second in command, from claimant to the promises, from heir to the throne of a tribe, where he was going to be the guy. He goes from that to a slave, the slave of the captain of Pharaoh's guard, a slave in the most powerful nation on the planet, working for a guy that was tasked with protecting Pharaoh. It is a precipitous drop. And in this moment in his life, as he's being carted off by the Midianites, as he's eventually bought by Potiphar or representatives of Potiphar, I believe that Joseph faces this question that all of us at different points and seasons in our life face? Is he to resent God because he betrayed me or trust God because he loves me? That's the question that Joseph is faced with now as he travels down to Egypt. Do I resent God because I feel like he betrayed me or do I choose to trust God because I know that I know that I know that he loves me? Because make no mistake, in this moment, Joseph had to have felt betrayed by his God. God gave him a promise. God rose him to prominence. God told him, your brothers are going to bow down to you. And in this moment, it seems like that's the exact opposite of what's happening. His brothers heard that. They didn't want it to happen. So they do the exact opposite of God's will and sell him into slavery so they don't have to worry about that anymore. Problem solved. We're never going to bow down to Joseph. And so it seems very much like what's happening in Joseph's life is the exact opposite of what his God had promised him. So Joseph feels betrayed. So he's got a choice. Do I resent this betrayal? Or do I choose to trust God because I know that I know that I know that he loves me? And if he loves me, he must have a plan for me. And here's the thing. Here's the thing that I love about this crossroads in the life of Joseph. The very thing that has caused him to feel betrayed by his God, the very thing that makes him doubt his faith, the very thing that makes it seem like God has let him down, the fact that he has been sold into slavery and has been brought low and humbled and is no longer where he was and cannot see a clear path to the promises that God gave him, the very thing that happens to cause Joseph to doubt God and feel betrayed by God is the thing that has to happen to bring about the future that God promises to Joseph. Do you understand? If you know the whole story, you know, spoiler alert, eventually his brothers do bow down to him. But his being sold into slavery by his brothers was a necessary trial and instance to go through so that God could put Joseph exactly where he wanted to put him 25 years later and bring about the promises that he made to Joseph when he was a 17-year-old snot-nosed kid. And from his spot, from the ox cart on the way to Egypt, Joseph cannot see that future. There is no path in his head that brings about the promise that God gave to him. He cannot see that future. And in the midst of that blindness where he cannot see how in the world is God going to be faithful to what he promised me, he has to choose. Do I resent God because he's allowing me to sit here? Or do I choose to trust him because I know that he loves me? And I know that he has his hand on me still. And you have to make that choice too. There are times in life when we feel betrayed by our God. When a diagnosis comes in that feels unfair. When we're faced with a loss that doesn't seem right. When we don't get the job, when we don't get the child, when the child that we do have is so difficult to deal with that we're not really sure what went wrong or how we could fix it. To be someone who follows God is to experience a season where we feel like in some way or another he's let us down. And when we're in that season, we have good company and that Joseph sat there too. And he had to choose. Am I going to resent God because I feel like he betrayed me? Or am I going to choose to trust him because I know that I know that I know that He loves me. And if He loves me, He must have a plan for me. That's where we're going to pick it up next week. Let's pray. Father, thank You for loving us. Thank You for having a plan for us. Thank You for creating us in Christ Jesus for good works that we might walk in them. I pray that we would cling to those promises. Cling to what is promised to us in Scripture. Because Romans tells us that we can hope in you because that's the one place we can put our hope where it won't be put to shame. God, thank you for your servant Joseph. And thank you for directing the author of Genesis to show us his humanity, to show us that he wasn't always this guy who made incredibly good choices at every turn despite the difficulties. Thank you for showing us that he was human just like we are. Lord, I pray for our humility, that we would be gentle and humble in spirit, that we would be increasingly like your son, Jesus, that we would think more highly of those around us and that we would see your blessings in our life and allow those to bring us appropriately low so that we can walk in obedience to you. Let none of us in here require the force that Joseph did to bring us to a place of humility. And God, if there are those of us who are tempted to resent you right now, I pray this morning that we would choose to trust you, that we would be assured in myriad ways that you love us deeply, profoundly, and unconditionally. It's in your son's name that we pray. Amen.

We serve a God who's working through time to bring about His will and ultimately our good. We see the evidence of His sovereignty in the book of Genesis with the life of Joseph. To know and understand the story of Joseph is to get a glimpse into the very heart of God and to be assured that we can trust His plan. But to understand Joseph, we have to understand his roots. We have to know the promises made by his grandfather, Abraham, and tested by his father, Jacob. This week, we begin our journey through the life of Joseph by seeing where he came from and learning why he was the favored son. Only by looking at the origins of Joseph can we see the full depth of God's commitment to his children and begin to trust that no matter how unclear the future may seem to us, he has a plan. Well, good morning. It's good to see you. Thank you for being here. Thank you for watching, excuse me, online, if that's what you're doing. I feel compelled to say that was just a really great song. Yeah. I've not heard that song before, but I needed it. And just to be transparent, there are times if you come to grace long enough, you've probably figured out that I'm in the habit of kneeling and praying before I get up to preach. And there have been weeks that just between God and I that the prayer has been, God, just tether me to you. I feel myself wandering, and just draw me near to you. Use this sermon to preach to me as I preach to them. And he answers those prayers, man. He tethers you to him and he's good that way. So if that's your prayer, pray it hard and he'll be faithful. This week, we get into a series that I have been very, very much looking forward to since whenever it was that we planned to do it back in the summer. The story of Joseph in the Bible is, no surprise, one of my favorite stories. But I really mean it this time. I mean, you guys have a pastor that loves the Bible. You know, that's probably good, right? We can accept this. I love the story of Joseph. And as we said in the intro, it's this sweeping and stunning depiction of the sovereignty of God. And I'm not sure outside of Jesus himself and God's plan of redemption in Israel and sending his son and in birthing the church outside of the grand story of history. I don't know that there's one single story, particularly in the Old Testament, that is a more stunning and perfect example of the sovereignty of God. So for seven weeks, we're going to go through this story of Joseph together. And because I believe that there are points along the way that are worth sinking into, there are elements of the life of Joseph and the lives that preceded him that are worth understanding and sinking into and making points out of and all the things, I believe that this whole story is marching towards a larger point that we're going to make on week seven. So I want you to understand about this series that it is, this is one big, long, seven-week sermon. I'm not approaching these sermons like I normally do, where I come in, I tell a story, or we find some text, or I pick a topic, I talk about what the Bible says about that, or what text means and then I give us an application and so what and then we go home and we do the thing. That's a normal standalone sermon. I'm not going to encumber myself with that this week, this series. This series, I'm simply going to tell you the story. We're going to pause at one point and do a whole sermon on one sentence and one verse because I think it's so profound that we should stop and think about it and consider it together. And then it's kind of parenthetical to the series. And then we'll pick up every week and we'll go along. And we're so committed to this that the little intro that you just saw that was voiced for us by Carly Buchanan, she did a great job. And for those who don't know, Carly's actually on staff with us part-time. She does all of our graphics and social media and is in charge of the Grace Vine and all that stuff and contributes mightily in meetings. So each bumper video is going to be like previously on to kind of catch us up with the narrative so we know where we're at. I just realized this morning in my excitement, that's the excuse that we'll go with, in my excitement for this series, I failed to make sure that we produced a reading plan and I'm sorry, but we'll have one out tomorrow. It'll be online and I would love for everyone to be reading through this with us. The other reason you should read these stories too is like this morning, we're going to talk about the life of Jacob. That's a lot of chapters. I'm going to tell a lot of his story. I'm just telling you this right now. I'm going to get some details wrong. I don't want to. I've gone back and reread everything that I'm going to tell you today twice. I'm still going to mess it up. There's a lot of details. I'm sorry about that. But go read the Bible yourself so that you know what I'm messing up and what you should believe. We need to be doing that the whole time as we go through this series. But like we said in that video, to understand Joseph, to understand the sovereignty that we see in his life, to understand his status as the favored son, to understand his position in history and in the history of Israel and in the narrative of the scope of scripture, we have to understand his roots. We have to understand his father and his great-grandfather and who they were. So we're going to look today at the life of Jacob, the father of Joseph, and learn about him and some of the promises that God made to Jacob that are renewed promises that he made to Abraham that we will get to. But as we look at the life of Jacob, I feel like there is, whenever I read the story of the life of Jacob, there is this driving question to me as I read through who he is, which is simply, why does God continue to bless this guy? Jacob's the worst. You're going to see. He's the worst. He is a conniving, scheming jerk. He's a terrible human for most of his life. And yet God continues to bless him. At every turn, he gets exactly what he wants and what he needs. And I always read the story like, God, he's not doing any of the things. There's no fruit of the Spirit in his life. He's not repenting. He's not going to church. He's not even calling you God. Like, what's the deal? He keeps getting blessed. And so for me, the driving question as you go through the life of Jacob is, why does God choose to continue to bless this guy? Jacob's story begins in Genesis chapter 25, and we're going to go through into the 30s this morning. But his story begins in Genesis chapter 5. In Genesis chapter 5, his mom, Rebecca, is pregnant with twins, and they seem to be quarreling in her womb a lot. They're active, right? And she's praying about it. God, what gives? I got two babies in here, and they are really going to town. Like, what's going on? And God speaks to her, and he gives her a really significant sentence and prophecy and promise from God that you have two nations inside of you and the older will serve the younger. And that's a big deal. It might not seem like a big deal in the 21st century for a younger sibling to be more successful than an older sibling, but in the ancient world, that was a huge deal. In the ancient world, the eldest son, he was the heir to whatever tribe or fiefdom or clan they had developed. He was the heir. And we'll see in a minute when we start talking about birthright exactly what that entails. But to be the firstborn son was a big deal. And there was a birthright that went along with that. So for the younger to serve the older is kind of a radical thing. So for God to say that up front matters because that's not how it would typically go. So then we see the birth of Jacob. Jacob's born second. His brother Esau is born before him. And we're told that Jacob comes out of his mother's womb, from birth. Certainly in the English, it means something different, one would hope. But in the original Hebrew, it means he cheats or cheater. And boy, did this guy live up to his name. What we know about Jacob and Esau is that Esau was what we would traditionally refer to as a manly man. He was a hairy dude. He liked to be outdoors. He liked to hunt and fish. He liked to gut animals and cook meat and do the whole thing. He just stunk all the time. We'll see later. Later, his father, well, I'm not going to spoil the story for you, but he was a stinky dude. That was Esau. He was just rough and tumble. Jacob was more of a homebody. Jacob liked to cook. I identify with Jacob, all right? So I will defend him. But he liked to cook. He was his mom's favorite son. Esau was his dad's favorite son. And that was kind of the dynamic of the home. And one day, it's the Bible says when they had grown, the Hebrew Midrash, Hebrew tradition holds that they were about 15 years old, but that's word of mouth. So they were, at least in their adolescence, could be college age. They had grown up. And one day Esau comes in from a hunt. He bursts in, Jacob's at the stove cooking stew, and Esau is so famished and so hungry that he says, if you don't let me eat some of that stew, I'm going to die. Can I please have some stew? Which to me, in my head, always, just take it easy, Esau. Why don't you just relax? All right, you're not going to die. Like eat a granola bar or something. You don't need the stew. Go pick some berries. Like I think he's being dramatic, but who knows? I'm going to die if you don't give me some stew. And so Jacob sees a moment here that he can take advantage of, which Jacob is really good at seeing these moments. And he said, sure, I'll give you some stew for your birthright. And they kind of argue back and forth a little bit. And then finally Esau's like, fine, whatever. You can have my birthright. I don't care. Just give me some stew. So he sells his birthright for some stew. Now a birthright in the ancient world was the firstborn son has the birthright from the father to when the father is dead or incapacitated or absent for a long period of time due to a travel, the eldest son, because of his birthright, steps into the father's position of authority. And when the father eventually dies, gets a double portion of the inheritance. So it's kind of a big deal to have the birthright. And Esau's like, fine, whatever, take it. I just want the stew. And it's my contention that there's more going on here than Jacob's simple desire for more money when his father dies and Esau's simple rejection of the authority that his father has. I think that there's more going on here because later on in the Bible, in the New Testament, we're taught that because Esau despised his birthright, that God loved Jacob and hated Esau. That's strong language. And I almost chose to try to like soften up hate so that we could understand that a little bit better. But I thought, no, I'm not going to walk back with the Bible says about how God felt. He loved Jacob. I loved, and Esau, I hated, because Esau despised his birthright. So there's something more going on here than Esau simply deciding that he didn't want to be materialistic or authoritarian. And what I would contend with you is happening here. You guys are adults, you know your Bible, you decide whether or not you agree with this. But what I would contend with you is happening in this moment is Esau's kind of rejecting his inheritance. And when I say that, I mean his spiritual inheritance. Because when you were growing up, your parents told you about your grandparents. Your grandparents told you about your family. You knew what your family believed. Your family had values. These are things that are imparted on you. And in this culture, this word of mouth, oral tradition culture, you were told about your family. Jacob's grandfather was Abraham. And Abraham, all the way back in Genesis chapter 12, and I talk about these promises all the time. If you've heard me preach enough, you ought to be able to recite these promises to me. In Genesis chapter 12, Abraham was promised that. Abraham, we're certain, communicated those promises and that heritage to Isaac, his son. Isaac had two sons, Jacob and Esau. It stands to me to reason that Jacob and Esau, by the time they had arrived at this scene in their late adolescence or early adulthood, knew good and well the promises that God had made to their grandfather Abraham and knew that what that meant is because God made those promises to Abraham, those have to flow through our family line. So in Jacob's mind, whoever has the birthright, whoever is acknowledged as a firstborn son and gets the blessing of the father is going to carry these promises from God. And I want to be the one through whom all the descendants come. I want to be the one that has a claim on this land. I want to be the one whose one of my descendants will bless the whole earth. I want to be great. I want those things. I want to be the participant and the claimant in the promise. And so I'm going to find a way to get the birthright. And when Esau flippantly sold it for stew, to me, what he said is, fine. I don't really buy into the promises to grandpa anyways. You can have them. And in that moment, he was flippant. And Jacob saw something, not a God that he wanted to honor, but a future that he wanted to lay hold of. And so he got it with some stew. Later, at the end of Isaac's life, he's dying. He's on his deathbed. He's got days or weeks to live. His eyesight is failing him. And he calls Esau in and he says, the time has come for me to bless my sons. I'm going to die soon. This is a paraphrase. Go out, kill me my favorite game and make me my favorite meal so that I can enjoy it one last time and then bless you. And Esau dutifully, yes, father. And he takes off and he leaves. He goes out into the wilderness to kill what he needs to kill and cook what he needs to cook. Meanwhile, Rebecca hears this and knows what's going on. And she goes and gets her favorite son, Jacob. And she says, Jacob, listen, your dad just told Esau to do this. He's out in the woods. You go get one of the goats that we have in our pen. You go get a goat. You kill it. You make his stew. You strap that goat skin on yourself and you march into your dad's room and you get that blessing. Which Jacob always gets a bad rap for what he's about to do and he deserves it because it's horrible. But it was his mom's idea, man. She was scheming and conniving too. I mean, where do you think he got it? We're going to meet his uncle in a minute. It runs in the family. Which is why, this is just an aside, just general advice. Look out for mama's boys. Okay, you don't know what they're planning. You have no idea. You got to be careful about mama's boys. So Jacob does what he's told to do. He goes and he kills a goat and comes back. He makes a stew. He straps the skin on himself and he goes into, listen to this, listen to this. I really do want you to picture this. If you've ever had what I now, it's incredibly painful, but it's also an incredible privilege to sit at the bedside of someone who is slowly dying. If you've ever done that, that's who Jacob is going in to lie to. That's who Jacob is going in to deceive. Imagine the jerk you have to be. And because I'm preaching, that's as strong of language as I can use. Imagine the jerk that you would have to be to walk into this room and to lie in this way. Look at what he says. I'm in Genesis chapter 27, beginning in verse 18. So he went into his father and said, my father, he said, here I am. Who are you, my son? So already Isaac doesn't know who's who. Jacob said to his father, I am Esau, your firstborn. I have done as you told me. Now sit up and eat of my game that your soul may bless me. It's me, Esau. I did what you told me to do. Now sit up and eat and give me the blessing. Sign the paper. Do it. He's very much got an agenda. And then listen to this. But Isaac said to his son, how is it that you have found it so quickly? He answered, because the Lord, your God, granted me success. What a jerk. He says, Esau, this happened a lot more quickly than I thought it could. How did you have such success in going out and killing the game and making it and bringing it here? This is so much faster than I anticipated. And Jacob deceives him and plays on his heartstrings because the Lord your God delivered them into my hands. The Lord your God was good to me. You were right about this God guy all along. And as soon as I stepped foot into the wilderness, this thing just walked in front of me and I shot him true and I skinned him and cleaned him. What a deceptive little conniving weasel. He said to Jacob, He still doesn't know. He still thinks he's being duped. So Jacob went near Isaac, his father, who felt him and said, And he did not recognize him because his hands were hairy like his brother Esau's hands. So he blessed him. Now time out. Jacob, to deceive his dad, strapped on goat skin and fur to his own hands and arms. And when Esau reached out, or when Isaac reached out in his blindness and felt goat skin, he said, yep, that's Esau. That's a hairy dude, man. Like I'm a hairy guy, all right? I got plenty. If you put Jen in a blindfold and have her touch a goat, she's not going to be like, that's my Nate. Like, he's hairy. There's no spiritual point there. It's just remarkably hairy. Anyways. And he said, are you really my son Esau? And he answered, I am. Still, Isaac doesn't believe him. Still, Isaac is being so careful and thinks he's being duped and he triples down on the lie. He says, are you sure? He says, I am, of course, I'm Esau. Then he said, bring it near me that I may eat of my son's game and bless you. So he brought it near him and he ate and he brought him wine and he drank. Then his father Isaac said to him, come near Esau. And he smelled him, which apparently Esau smells like a dead goat. And he said, yeah, you're Esau. And he kissed him. And he blessed him. And in the blessing that follows, he gives everything to Jacob and nothing to Esau. And Esau comes back from the hunt and he prepares and he goes to his dad. And his dad, Isaac, is brokenhearted and they both weep. And he says, I can't give you anything. I've already given it all to Jacob. And Esau is rightly incensed with anger and decides in his heart that once my father passes away and when the mourning period has passed, I'm going to murder my brother and claim this. See, Jacob did whatever he had to do to lay his hands on the future that he wanted for himself, even if it meant betraying his brother and his father. And so he did. Rebekah again finds out about this and tells Jacob. And so Jacob then flees to go to Uncle Laban's tribe, his camp, because they were all nomadic. So he flees to go be with Uncle Laban. On his way there, he lays down. And while he's sleeping, he has a dream. In Genesis chapter 28. And this dream is Jacob's famous ladder. And as he's sleeping, he sees a ladder, and it's going up to heaven, and angels are going up and down this ladder. And God is at the top of it, and he begins to speak with him. And we're not going to put this on the screen, but I want you to hear what he said to him. He says in verse 13, Now he's making an extra promise to him. The other promises are promises that he's reiterating from Abraham. He's re-upping and offering them to Jacob. The ones that he lied to get from his dad, the ones that he connived to get from his brother in the birthright and in the blessing, the future that he's been trying to lay a hold of, now God is promising it to him by re-upping on the promises that he made to Abraham. They're the exact same promises he's now making to Jacob. And then God doubles down on it and he says, behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go and will bring you back to this land for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you. So Jacob has spent his life conniving and scheming and lying and cheating to lay hold of the future that he desired for himself, to be the one through whom the blessings of God flow. He finally gets to a place where he has what he wants. He's laid hold of the future that he's wanted for himself, but it's cost him his home. And so now he has to flee to his Uncle Laban's. He has to start over. And he has to start completely over and go start from ground zero to try to pursue this life that he's chosen for himself. And his brother, who's bigger and stronger than him and an incredible hunter and very good outdoors, is on his tail. He is scared and he is anxious. And in that fear and anxiety, God appears to him in a dream. He re-ups on the promises that he made to his grandfather, Abraham, which again, why does God choose to continue? Why is God promising him this? He's a jerk. He just lied to his dying father to get that blessing and then God affirms it. And then he says, and I promise you, I'll protect you. I'll bring you back here. Now, how would you respond to that from God? I would wake up and get on my knees and say, God, you are so good. Thank you. I really do genuinely think I would respond with profound gratitude. God, thank you for caring for me when I deserve it so little. That is not Jacob's response. Jacob's response we see in verse 28. He doubles down on the whole thing. Then Jacob made a vow when he woke up, is when he made the vow, saying, if God will be with me and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear so that I come again to my father this guy. Like, yeah, yeah, yeah, I hear you, God. We'll see. I tell you what, if you keep those promises and you bring me back here, and, oh, by the way, if you feed me and you clothe me, because you didn't, I don't know if you did this on purpose, God, but you didn't mention that in your promises to me. So if you do everything you said, plus clothing and shelter and food, then you bring me back here. Then at that point, I will give you the gift of me calling you my God. Jacob still doesn't get it. But God is consistent in his promises. So he makes it to Laban's camp, house. And when he gets there, he immediately sees Rachel. And Rachel is stunning. He is immediately captivated by Rachel's beauty. Now, don't worry about it that that's his cousin, all right? It's just different. It's like Mississippi. It's just different in the Old Testament, okay? Don't worry about that. It's like distant or something. And so he goes to Laban and he says, I want to marry Rachel, but I can't afford to pay the dowry. What's it going to take for me to earn the right to marry your daughter? And Laban says, work for me for seven years and you can marry her. And the Bible says that those years went by in a flash because of his deep and abiding love for Rachel. He was really, truly infatuated by her, and it went by speedily because this is his goal. So he worked for seven years. The problem is, after he's worked for Laban for seven years, Laban acknowledges, man, God is with this Jacob guy, and my profits are doubling. I can't let him go yet. I need him to keep working for me. So on the night of the wedding, they have the big celebration. They do all the stuff. Jacob goes back to his tent. It's probably safe to say he was less than sober upon his arrival at his tent. They present his bride to him and they do what married people do on their wedding night. And he wakes up the next day to roll over and give a kiss to his new bride, Rachel. And he sees Leah, Rachel's older sister, who the Bible really hilariously describes as weak in the eyes, which is apparently the Genesis author's way of saying she was not much of a looker. Jacob, he didn't like her. He liked Rachel. But now he's with Leah. So he just got out Jacobed by his uncle is what happened. So it runs in the family. Laban, Rebecca, Jacob, it's all a whole thing. They should all be on Jerry Springer together. So he goes to Laban. He's like, what gives? This is not the deal. And Laban's like, well, too bad. You already did married stuff with Leah, so now she's yours. And he's like, okay, well, what do I have to do to get Rachel? He's like, seven more years. Okay, so he worked for seven more years. Into the seven years, Laban's true to his word. He marries Rachel. Everyone's happy. So then he goes to Laban, and he's like, I'm ready to go out on my own. I'm ready to go make a name for myself and go fulfill these promises. He's still got pictured this future that he's claimed for himself. And he says, can I go? What do I need to do to be able to go? And Laban says, work for me for seven more years. We'll divide up the herds in this way and then you can go. I don't have time to get into how he did it, but Jacob devised a scheme to basically take all the biggest and best sheep and goats and cattle and everything from Laban on his way out and leave Laban with all the weak sisters of the poor. He had nothing left when Jacob left him. He robbed him of everything, and they go out into the wilderness. Twenty-one years after he laid down and God reiterated those promises, now he's back out, and he feels like he can finally pursue the life for himself that he wants and finally lay hold of the future that he's been fighting so valiantly for. As he leaves, word reaches him that his brother Esau knows where he is and is coming. And Esau, in these last 21 years, has amassed for himself a good tribe and a lot of fighting men. And he's coming for old Jacob. Jacob is scared. Again. He divides up his camp. He splits them in two so that if Esau encounters one or the other, maybe he'll only lose half of his stuff. And he separates himself from his wife, from his wives and his children. His wives eventually have children. We're going to talk about them next week. And so they're on their way back home, back to Canaan, and Esau's coming. So he divides them up and he spends the night by himself. And as he's spending the night, we're told that a man came to wrestle with him, to quarrel with him. Essentially, a man attacked Jacob while he was sleeping. And scripture says that they wrestled all night long. And as morning approached, the man who was wrestling with him said, you gotta let me go, day is about to break, I have to leave. And Jacob wouldn't let him go. And so the man that he was wrestling with touched his hip, we believe dislocated his hip. And after he did that, he said, you got to let me go. And Jacob said, I'm not letting you go until you bless me. You bless me and then you can go. And then they have this conversation. You're going to see verse 28 on the screen. He says, and the man, he's wrestling called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men and have prevailed. Then Jacob asked him, Please tell me your name. But he said, Why is it that you ask my name? And there he blessed him. So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered. So Jacob, the night before he meets Esau, is wrestling all night with a guy. For some reason, Jacob is compelled, I will not let you go unless you bless me. And the guy says, what's your name? And he says, Jacob. And he says, your name is no longer Jacob, but Israel. Because you have striven with man and with God and you have prevailed. And yes, that Israel. Jacob is the man for whom the country is named. Jacob is the man whose 12 sons, one of whom is Joseph, become the 12 tribes of Israel. In that moment, his name is changed to Israel from Jacob. And Jacob names the place Peniel because he says, I have seen God face to face and have survived. Many scholars believe that who he was wrestling with was really angelic and potentially Jesus. And my way of interpreting the Old Testament scripture is whenever you see an opportunity that it looks like Jesus might have come on the scene, just decide that that's what happened because that's a way cooler way to interpret scripture. And he said he saw the face of God and he said he had now striven with God. So Jacob wrestled with Jesus until I think, until Jesus renamed him Israel. And in that moment, when Jesus says this, when the man that he wrestled with says this, I think it was this enormous light bulb moment for Jacob. His whole life, he had been striving against man to lay hold of the future that he wanted for himself. He schemed against Esau. He schemed against his father, Isaac. He schemed against Laban. At every turn, he even made a deal with God when God appeared to him in his goodness and restated the promises. He was scheming with God. And his whole life, he saw what he wanted, and to get it, he was fighting against man. And what he realizes after he spends the night wrestling with who I think was Jesus, he realizes, oh my goodness, I've been fighting against God this whole time. Not just last night, but my whole life. I will take you back to the promise that God made to Rebecca. There are two nations in your womb, and the older will serve the younger. From the very beginning, before Jacob existed, before he came out clutching his brother's heel, before he lied for the birthright, before he lied for the blessing, before he deceived Laban for riches, before he did any of that, God had already decided that he was going to be the one through whom the promise ran. He had already decided on the future that Jacob would have. God had already made up his mind about that. And his whole life, Jacob invests all of his energy and all of his anxiety and all of his efforts and all of his talents and all of his time in trying to lay hold of this future that he wanted that God was already bestowing on him. And in this moment, I think he finally realized, oh my goodness, I've been fighting against God this whole time. My fight was not against Esau. It was not against Isaac. It was not against Laban. I was struggling with God. And if I'll just step out of his way, he's going to do what he wants to do anyways. And then I can experience the joy of being with him and watch him bring about these things. And in that way, I think there's a little bit of Jacob in all of us. I think all of us, if we could take a step back and look at what's bringing us the most anxiety, look at what's causing us the most stress, look at where we invest most of our thought and most of our efforts in trying to lay hold of the future that we want for ourselves or our family. Is it possible that in that striving, we, like Jacob, are really striving against God? Is it possible that if we'll just let go and trust Him, that He'll bring about the things for us that he wants that are what's best. And that if we'll just trust God's future instead of the one that we are trying to lay hold of and control all the uncontrollables and we'll stay up at night thinking about and putting all of our effort and our times and our talents and our energies into, if we'll turn that into an effort to trust God and walk with him and stand in His love where there is no fear? Is it possible that what we'll find is for a big portion of our life we've simply been striving against God, not against the things that we think we're striving against? This is why it should be important to us the answer to our question. Why does God choose to bless this guy? Because God's commitment to his promise is not contingent upon Jacob's behavior. God's commitment to the promise that he made to Abraham of land, people, and blessing, and the promise that he doubled down on for Jacob of land, people, and blessing, and to bring you back to this place safely is not contingent on Jacob's behavior. When God in heaven is watching Jacob be a jerk to his dad and lie in the bedroom to his dying father who can't see him and triple down on the lie, God in that moment doesn't consider rescinding his promises and removing his blessing because of Jacob's bad behavior. There's this really prominent scholar named N.T. Wright. He writes a whole book on justification and in that book he defines God's righteousness as his commitment to his promises. If you were asked to define what does it mean that God is righteous, it means that when he says he'll do something, he does it. He's committed to his promises, and he made a promise to Abraham, and he's not going to cut off his promises because Abraham had a jerk of a grandson. He's going to be patient with that jerk of a grandson until he wakes up one day and sees that I'm your God too, and I've been watching out. I know that you think you've been taking care of yourself the whole time, but it hasn't had anything to do with you, Jacob. It's been me. And as soon as you want to put your faith in me, I'm here. I'm not going to connect these dots for you because I want you to do it. But his promises to you are not contingent on your behavior either. And that's a pretty darn good thing. The tough part is, as believers, we walk around sometimes like it does. And it doesn't. God has made you promises too. God promises you a future that you want to lay hold of too, eternally. And his interest and commitment to keeping those promises is not contingent on how you behave. Jacob goes on from this moment where I believe everything changes. And he meets his brother Esau. Esau is excited to see him, has mercy on him and is gracious with him. They have a sweet reunion. And Jacob, if you look at the text, man, he starts acting totally differently than he had any time in his life in those chapters that follow. And he goes back to the land that was promised to his grandfather, that was promised to him. And he begins to live his life. And this assurance that God is looking out for him and a trust of God's promises, finally seeing the future that he wanted to lay hold of for himself. And he and his sons, one of whom is Joseph, begin to live their life in the land of Canaan. And that's where we'll pick up the story next week. Let's pray. Father, God, you're so good, but you're so big. You love so much. You're so mysterious, and you're so wonderful, and you're so patient. God, for those of us who have been striving against you, would we realize it? And would we stop it? God, I pray for each of us as we are on our journeys of knowing you, of working out our salvation with fear and trembling, of understanding what it is to have faith and cling to you and walk with you and be drawn to you. No matter where we are or what we're going through or how far or near to you we feel, I pray that you would draw us in. I pray in this series more than anything else that we would simply be drawn into you each week. That through the story of these saints of old that we would see their humanity and we would see your love and we would know that that love is reflected on us and we would know that your sovereignty still rules over us and that we would simply be drawn into your grandeur and into your love and into your plan. Draw us near to you as we come together for these next seven weeks, Lord. In Jesus' name, amen.

If you're like a lot of us, then this jar kind of looks like your life as we entered the pandemic. Lots of things in our life that are really important to us, big deals, things that we definitely want to prioritize, but maybe sometimes we have a hard time finding time for, and then other things in our life that are probably important, but maybe not essential, and we'd love to give our time to them, but we probably don't need to make big priorities out of them. But what happens in the end when we get so busy is that we don't have time for everything, right? But then with the pandemic, life, well it kind of hit the reset button. And we spent most of last year with nothing but time on our hands. And now, as we face moving back into what feels like normal, I think that we have this unique opportunity to reassemble our lives. And as we have this opportunity, I thought it would be appropriate for Grace to stop and really think critically about well, what are our big rocks? What are the things in our life that are the most important to us? What are the things that we want to prioritize above and beyond everything else? And what would our life look like if we actually identified our big rocks and prioritized our time around those things? What if we put these rocks in first and made sure that there was space in our life for the things that were most important and then around those things we allowed all the other little things to kind of fill in the rest of our time and priorities? What would it look like if we were to hit the reset button on our life and reassemble it in such a way that we had time and space for what was important to us and we didn't have to worry at all about the other things that just at the end of the day they're not nearly as big of a deal? What are our big rocks And how do we make space for them as we enter into a new normal? Well, good morning. Thank you for being here. My name is Nate. I get to be the pastor here. Isn't it cute in that video how I assumed that we were just charging right back into normal? And then here we are in masks again. Boy, the naivety as we roll into each wave of this is pretty funny, especially to think back. I can remember back in March of 2020 having conversations. Joe, the moderator of our board, called me in between the 8th and the 15th of March, and he said, hey, I think maybe we need to take a break. Maybe we can't meet in person this Sunday. And I was like, Joe, this is a big decision. I don't know if we should do this. And he goes, no, man, I really think we need to. And I'm like, Joe, listen to me. This is not going to be like a two-week thing. This could go well into April. So who the heck knows? But it's good to see everybody. Thank you for doing your part. And this is the last part of our series called Big Rocks, which if you've been here all four weeks or you've watched online all four weeks and you've watched that intro video of me four times in a row, good for you. That's serious partner of the year stuff right there. This week, as we talk about our priorities in life and approaching this fall, we're going to talk about the idea and the topic of community. And if you've been in church for any amount of time, you've heard a sermon on community. If you've been here, you've probably heard me talk about the importance of community. In our mission statement, we emphasize community by saying that grace exists to connect people to Jesus and connect people to people. So you might be tempted when I say that the sermon this week is on community, you might be tempted to kind of glaze over and go, yep, got it. Christian community is important. I'm going to do it. Good. And then start thinking about whatever you've got going on the rest of the day, lunch plans, or if you're me trying to get the grass cut before the thunderstorm start, whatever it is you've got going on, you might be tempted to take your head there when I say that the sermon is going to be on community because we might feel like we kind of get it. But if that's you, I want to encourage you to lean in this morning. Because I hope that what we'll do is I'll leave here or I'll turn off our TVs, wherever we might be consuming this, that we will finish this experience this morning or whenever you're listening, thinking differently about the power and efficacy of community than when we started. I hope that we will be inspired to pursue it as if our lives depended on it. I think the idea of community is incredibly important. And if you read your New Testament, if you read the Bible, the New Testament that starts with the Gospels, the accounts of the life of Christ, and then on to the end of Revelation, if you read your New Testament, if you read the Bible, the New Testament that starts with the gospels, the accounts of the life of Christ, and then on to the end of Revelation, if you read your New Testament and you pay attention, what you'll find is a lot of we's and ours and collective you. Like when Paul writes in the letters that he says, for this reason, I bow my knees before the father. And he says, I pray for you. I thank my God every time I remember you. That's not you as an individual. That's a collective you as the church in Rome or Philippi or Ephesus. The Gospels are written to an audience, are written to a church, are written to a group of people. You find in the New Testament very few personal, singular pronouns. You find very you singular yous. You should do this, you should do that, God did this, whatever it is for just you. You don't find those in the New Testament. What you find in the New Testament is collective we and are. The New Testament assumes that your faith will be communal. It assumes that you have other Christians around you walking in the same direction you are pursuing, the same Jesus that you are pursuing. As a matter of fact, if you go to Acts chapter 2, verses 42 through 47, that's not in your notes, so you can write that down if you want to. You can turn there if you get bored at some point in the sermon, which is likely to happen. Turn to Acts chapter 2, verses 42 through 47, and make sure that I'm not making this stuff up. That is the quintessential church passage. There is no pastor who has preached more than two sermons on community and has not based one of the sermons in that passage. It is a quintessential church passage. It describes what the church looked like and did in its very infancy. As soon as Christ ascends and we have Pentecost and Peter and the disciples share the gospel, we see 3,000 people come to faith that day. That's the birth of the church. And then Acts chapter 2 verses 42 through 47 describes what the church did and how it behaved in its infancy. It is the barometer by which all church for the rest of time is measured. And if you read those verses, what you find is collective wheeze. It's communal. The church did this and they committed themselves to the apostle teaching. They devoted themselves to prayer. They met in one another's homes day by day. They were together all the time pursuing teaching, sharing meals, praying together, learning together, pursuing Jesus together. It is a communal activity. Your faith, if you have it, is quintessentially communal, which is why there's a little bit of an issue in evangelical churches with this phrase that we like to use sometimes. Raise your hand if you've ever heard the phrase that Christianity is about a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Have you ever heard that? Now listen. Christianity is about a personal faith. It's about a personal belief that God is the creator and author of the universe, that to reconcile his creation to himself, namely you, he sent his son to die in your place, and we place our faith in Jesus' death on the cross, and we place our hope in his resurrection on Easter, that one day we will be united with our God and reunited with those who also have faith in our Jesus, and we have a hope that will not put us to shame. To be a Christian, you need to individually believe that and have faith in that, and one of the remarkable things about Christianity is that our God does offer us a personal relationship with him. But listen to me closely. We must have an individual faith, but your faith is not about your personal relationship with Jesus Christ because your relationship with Jesus Christ is not personal. It is communal. We see it over and over again in Scripture. It is a communal faith. It is not just your business. It is our business as a church. We don't see that phrase, personal relationship with Jesus Christ, pop up in the Bible. We see a necessity for an individually claimed faith. But make no mistake about it, your faith is quintessentially communal. It is, I would argue, it is impossible to grow close to Jesus and have a vibrant walk with him totally by yourself. To take your Bible and a prayer book and to wander off in the desert like these mystical people who have existed before us that we somehow, we look at and we think that they were the ones who had nailed faith. And I don't think any of those existed, but the people who just go off by themselves and just totally ensconced in God's word and in prayer, and it's just them and God. you can't have a vibrant walk with Jesus doing that because loving Jesus requires you to love others. If your love from Jesus does not cause you to pour out love onto other people, then you are not expressing the love that Jesus has lavished on you. You are bottling that up. You are keeping that to yourself. To live a non-communal faith is fundamentally self-centered. And we miss out on who Jesus is by not lavishing his love on others in the same way that he loves us. John tells us in his letters at the end of the Bible that if we love Jesus, then we will love others. The Christian faith was not designed to live alone. I think that there are parts of Jesus that you find in loving other people. We cannot come to know Christ in the way that he wants to be known if we are trying to do it void of loving others and serving others and doing his work. This is why the mission statement at Grace is connecting people to Jesus first, but also connecting people to people. Because your walk with God will not be as vibrant and as healthy as it can be if it is void of community as you share your faith. So community and our faiths is vitally important. It's why I think that community is God's primary tool for tethering, comforting, and sustaining his children. Community is God's primary tool for tethering his children to him, for comforting his children in their time of need and for sustaining them in their walks and in the commitments that he's led you to make. Now, I would offer you a caveat here. I need to, if you have notes, if you're a note taker, please write this in your notes. Community is God's primary tool dash outside of heaven. It's God's primary tool this side of heaven to tether us and to sustain us and to comfort us. Because he tethers us with his son. He sustains us with his spirit. He comforts us with Jesus as he weeps with us. But these things, this community I'm going to show you is the way that God gives himself time to work in your life to bring you to a place where you're walking with him. It's the way that God the Father throws his arms around you in times of trouble. It's the way that God comes beside you and sustains you when your faith and your commitments are faltering. So I do not at any point want to replace the work that the Holy Spirit and God the Father and Jesus are doing in our lives and moving in us, but I do want us to see that community is often the tool that they use to work powerfully and effectively in our lives. I say that it's the primary tool for tethering, for kind of keeping us attached to the faith, even at times when we might be wandering off. With that in mind, I'm going to share something with you that I really am not sure that I'm all the way ready to share, because if I share it and then I don't do it, I'm a failure and a quitter. But last week, I committed with some friends of mine to run a half marathon at the end of February. I committed to do this because I'm fat now, and I need to. Somebody asked me before the service, why is your shirt tucked down? Like, are you being serious today? I'm like, no, no, I'm fat. I need to be able to blouse a little bit for the camera, you know? But I'm sharing that with you because if you know me well, you know that I've got a group of really good buddies. One guy I've been best friends with since I was five years old, so we've been friends for 35 years. And then there's eight of us total. We've been friends together, all of us, for at least 20 years. And we talk on this app called Marco Polo. It's probably for high school girls, but we love it and we use it to talk back and forth. We talk every day. And so there's eight of us and we legit, we talk every day. Whatever's going on in the world, whatever's happening in sports, whatever's happening in our lives, we talk about it. Just this morning, I was watching my friend, he dropped his daughter off at college yesterday and was telling us how emotional he got about it. And I'm in my office getting emotional about Lily starting kindergarten tomorrow. And if I talk about it for too long, I'm gonna get emotional in front of you. So we talk about stuff all the time. And then we have different threads for different topics. You know, different things that some of us may wanna talk about, but not everybody does. Anyways, we've got one for exercising. I can't tell you the name of it. There's a cuss word in it, but we've got one for exercising. And I started it. I started it back in January. I was like, guys, I'm fat now. I think I want to start eating well. I think I want to start exercising. Is anybody with me? And seven of them were like, yeah, let's do it. My one buddy, Tim, God bless him. He does not care. And I wish I could be more like Tim. But the rest of us were in there. And so we're encouraging each other every day, right? But eventually, I just stopped caring. I kind of fell off the wagon. Having a nine-month-old or an eight-month-pregnant wife will do that to you. And then so will having an infant and a three-month-old. It kind of takes you out of your regular rhythm. So it's been more difficult, and I kind of just lost my desire to do it, and to the point where they were daily talking about their workouts and the stuff that they're doing and yada, yada, yada. And I would just skip. Like, I wouldn't even listen. I would just fast-forward to the last one, hit play, skip to the end of that one, and so that those didn't show up as new, because I don't know. You people that just leave notifications on your phone, I don't know how you live with yourself. So I would have to go and just skip all the way through it, right? Ignoring it. And then I even became the devil on the shoulder of the people. They would share sometimes when I would listen, like, I didn't do anything today. I've been eating like crud lately. I just don't feel good about myself. And then I'd go out there and be like, come on over. It's great over here. There's barbecue and sweet tea. This is wonderful. Just buy larger fishing shirts and you're good. Like you can just let it all hang out. It's really, really great. It's good over here. But somewhere in that week and a half ago, my buddy got on there and he said, hey, I found a half marathon in Greenville and I think it would be fun if we would train for it together and try to run it together. And something about it, I don't know what it was. I don't know. I had some weakness that day and I said, yeah, that sounds like a good idea. Like it caught me on a good day. And I said, let's do this. Let's do it. And they were all very surprised that I was into it. But now I think there's five or six of us who are going to do it. And I'm only a week and a half in and I'm just a slow lumbering mess. As a matter of fact, if you live in my neighborhood, Falls River and then Bedford or whatever, and you see me running, can you just do me a favor and avert your eyes? And we'll just both pretend like that never happened. Do not honk at me or wave. I do not want to know that you saw me. I'd just like to live in this world where no one can see me lumbering down the road. But it's been fun to get back to it and to begin to train and begin to exercise and share that with my buddies. And I feel more inspired now to do this than I have in a long time. And I really think it might stick. So barring injury, which is more of a factor than it's ever been in my life, Lord willing, I'll run that thing in February and I'm looking forward to doing that. I share that story because I believe that this is what Christian community does with us for the church. To be a Christian for any amount of time is to go through a season of wandering. It's to go through a season where I was once committed, I once cared very much about my spiritual health, I was once very consistent in going to church and going to small group and reading my Bible and praying on my own, and I can remember seasons of vibrancy in my life, but now I'm just, whatever you want to call it, I'm in a rut, I'm wandering off, I don't feel it right now, I just am not, I'm going through some things and I just not sure that I can really connect with God. I'm not really sure that's a thing that I want. To be a Christian is to have gone through a season of wandering and probably not just one. And what community does is it keeps us tethered to our faith, even in times when we're not necessarily very committed to our faith. I didn't leave that thread because I like my buddies. I wanted to know what they were talking about. I wanted the community there. Even though I wasn't engaged in what they were engaged in, even though I wasn't pursuing what they were pursuing, I didn't want to totally detach myself because I thought maybe one day I will. Plus, I want to know what my friends are talking about. I don't want to have FOMO. So I stayed in there. And then one day, because I was tethered to that group by the community in that group, something caught me right. And I said, yeah, I'm going to make that choice for my health or for my children. Church community does this too. As we're going through a season of wandering, maybe we're not feeling faith right now. Maybe we're not super committed to it. Maybe we're not doing the things in private that we know we ought to be doing, but we keep showing up because we love the people in our small group. We keep showing up because we love to serve on Sunday morning. We keep showing up because that's our community and we don't want to miss out and those are our people. And then one day when you're at church or your small group or you're having a conversation or one day God speaks to you. He shows you something. You have an experience that moves you. Something catches you right. And that's what clicks and you re-engage in your spiritual life and you begin to pursue Jesus again. Our community tethers us to God in a very real way. Don't raise your hand, but I would ask you, those of you who are Christians, has there been a season of your life where if you didn't have Christian brothers and sisters who loved you and who just accepted you, not who came after you and got onto you and tried to convict you for the decisions that you were making, but who simply loved you, have you had seasons in your life that if it weren't for your Christian community tethering you to your faith, that you would have walked away from it entirely? Yeah. Or you're not being honest. God places us in community because he knows there will be times when we wander, and when we do, he's tethering us about this wandering at the end of his book. he writes this, my brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, remember this, whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins. Not only do we have brothers and sisters who love us as we begin to wander and tether us to our faith and kind of draw us back to God as God works on our souls to soften them back to himself. But we also have the opportunity in Christian community, in church community, to be the one that pulls back a wandering brother or sister. To be the one who just consistently loves, who just consistently shows up for, who just consistently says, I'm not here to judge you. I'm just here to love you. I'm here to enjoy you. Not a project friendship, deep, meaningful friendship. When we express that with one another, when we express the kind of community that I've seen at Grace, we are used by God to tether people to their faith and draw them back towards him. You are a tool in his hand used to draw back a wondering brother or sister by simply maintaining community with people even if it feels like they're wandering. So those of you who have wandering friends, which, has there ever been an easier time than now to wander away from the church? Continue to love them. Continue to be that tether that lets them know anytime you want to come back, we're here, we love you. And you can be a brother or a sister that is blessed according to James as we do that. The community here is absolutely a huge way that God keeps us tethered to him and to our faith. Community is also an enormous tool in the hands of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit as they seek to comfort us. We're told in Psalms that the Lord is close to the brokenhearted, that he saves those who are crushed in spirit. It's this idea that when we're at our lowest, God is at his closest. I've preached from stage many times, John 11, 35, the miracle of that verse. It's the shortest verse in the Bible that says that Jesus wept when he met Mary in her sorrow at the loss of her brother Lazarus. Jesus' response was to weep with her. And we get to preach and we get to claim and we get to know that we have a Jesus who weeps with us. And that's wonderful. But have you ever thought about how he does that? Have you ever thought about how God brings himself close to the brokenhearted? Will he bring his presence and his spirit close to the brokenhearted? Yes, absolutely he will. And he will speak into difficult times. Just yesterday, I was sitting on my porch swing and we've had a difficult couple of days and I felt pretty stressed. And I was just sitting there in the rain because that's what I love to do. And it was a good storm yesterday. And there was just this moment where God spoke some encouragement into my life. And it instantly gave me a peace. And so God will absolutely do that and comfort us in that way. But have you ever considered that the church community itself is also how God wraps his arms around us? Have you ever considered that our church community crying with us is also how Jesus weeps with us? Have you ever considered that that might be why Paul tells us to weep with those who weep and mourn with those who mourn? Because that is the expression of the very body of Christ hurting with those who hurt. Jen told me as I was talking through this sermon with her, she said, you got to tell the Lisa story. And I'm actually glad she's not here. Jen's not here this morning, because we'd be a sobbing mess. But if you've been going here since the end of last year, at least, then you likely know that in December of 2020, December 29th of 2020, just to cap off a real humdinger of a year, we lost Jen's dad, John, to pancreatic cancer. That's who our son is named after. And so in the months prior, Jen had been down there a lot. They're located in Athens. Jen had been down there back and forth a lot. And at some point she came home. After Thanksgiving, she came back with me and we were home. And John has a brother-in-law named Edwin who's a doctor. And Edwin and Mary stayed with John. And Edwin told me, Nate, go back home, take your family. We don't really know what's going on with John. But when you need to be here, when it's time for family to be around him, we'll call you. I said, all right. So we came back. We were back for about a week. No, it was just a couple days. It wasn't even a week. And it was the Sunday of December 6th. And at the time, we weren't meeting in person because we'd had a COVID flare up, and so we were just chilling out for a little bit. And so I had to come that morning on December 6th, and we did a live service. So we had worship worship and then I was to preach, right? And five minutes before the service started, my phone rings and it's Edwin. And he says, you need to get down here. So I said, all right. So I called Jen. So we need to get down there. I'm going to go ahead and preach this sermon. And then we'll hop in the car and we'll go home. Let me tell you something. I have no idea what I preached December 6th. I have never been less present for a sermon in my whole life. If you watched it and got something out of it, the Holy Spirit is good, okay? Because my mind was not on that sermon. And I got done and things felt so urgent that I literally, and I never do this, I just pulled off my mic and everything. I set it down. I got right in my car and I drove away. Steve was still playing. The band was still going. Folks were still here. I just got in my car and I left. And when I got in my car, I texted Steve and Kyle because they were both here that morning. And I said, hey, I'm so sorry for leaving so quickly. Here's what's going on. We got to head home. And I go home. I get Jen and we're scrambling to get out the door. We scrambled to get out the door so quickly that to pack for this trip, I just opened up the biggest suitcase I have and dumped all my dirty clothes in it and then grabbed clean clothes and threw them in there, zipped it up, and we headed out the door. I can do laundry where I'm going. I don't know how long I'm going to be there. But that's the kind of urgency that we were trying to get out the door with. In the middle of that, somebody rings our doorbell. And we're like, who's ringing our doorbell on a Sunday morning? And we look, and it's Lisa Goldberg, Steve's wife. And she's at our door, and clearly Steve had called her or texted her and told her what was going on. And see, Lisa's mom passed away of pancreatic cancer a few years prior. Actually, right before, right as Steve and Lisa were moving here to become a part of Grace. And she knew the road that Jen was about to walk. So Jen goes and answers the door. And Lisa has a little gift bag prepared for her and hands it to her and just gives her a hug and starts crying. And Jen was telling me about it this week, and she said she can't even remember Lisa saying any words. Maybe I'm sorry. They just hugged for a really long time. And then we got in the car and we left. And that hug and those tears meant more to Jen in the following weeks than they did in the moment. Because in the moment, she didn't know the hell that she was about to walk through. But Lisa did because she had walked it. And so that provided her with comfort as she walked through that period. You can't tell me that that morning wasn't Jesus coming to our door and wrapping his arms around my wife. He did. That's how he weeps with us. That's how he comforts us. That's why he tells us to weep together. Because when we do those things, we're the hands and feet of God. We're the hands and feet of Jesus wrapping ourselves around people who are hurting. That's how God expresses his love to us. That's how we express ourselves as the body of Christ. He places us in community so that our community can comfort us when we need it. So that he can be close to the brokenhearted. So that we can experience having a God that weeps with us. That's what community does. And it also sustains us. And this is my favorite. Community sustains us. There's this great picture in Exodus. Exodus chapter 17. I'm just going to tell you the synopsis of it, but the story is in verses 8 through 16. I'm going to be a mess. David, can you go get me a tissue? Do you mind doing that? Thank you, sir. Oh, Wes is on it. Thanks, Wes. That's why Wes is an elder, because he does things like that. Oh. That's why Cindy's a resting elder. Thank you. All right, give me a second. I'm sorry. Especially if you're watching online. You're just going to watch me turn my back. All right. Does anybody else need some of these? I saw a couple of tears out there. In Exodus 17, there's a guy named Amalek who's brought his armies against Israel. Moses is the head of the nation at this point. Joshua is his general. Moses is too old to lead people into battle. And so Moses tells Joshua, you go down into the select some men, go down into this valley and you fight Amalek. And as you fight him, I will be up here and I will have my hands raised to God. And as long as my hands are raised to God, then you will win the day. And Joshua says, okay. So he goes down and he begins to fight Amalek. And as he's fighting Amalek, Moses is on the top of the mountain with his hands raised. And as his hands are raised, then what he said comes true. And God is with Joshua and Joshua is winning the battle. But battles are long and Moses is old. And I guarantee you, he had lived a life of shepherding for 40 years. If you wanted to have a hold your hands over your head contest, he would crush everybody in this room. But at one point or another, no matter how strong you are, you'd get fatigued. And he needed to take a rest and let the blood get back in his shoulders. And when he would rest, the army would begin to be defeated and the battle would go towards Amalek. And so he's in this struggle of trying to hold his hands up, but not having enough strength to do it. And they're losing the battle if he can't hold his hands up. So what happens? Well, his brother Aaron and his friend named Hur, H-U-R, are next to him and they find a rock and they put a rock behind him and they tell him to sit on it and then they stand. I love this picture. They stand next to him and they hold his hands up so that he doesn't have to anymore. That's the best picture of community in the Bible. Because each of you, your husband, your wife, your friend, your Christian, your son, a daughter, a brother, a sister, if you're a woman in this church who's married and you have children, you've got a marriage that you're holding up, that you're offering to God. You've got children that you're trusting to God. You've got concerns in your own life. You've got your own faith that you need to carry. You've got your own stresses and your own anxieties and your own worries, and you're facing those battles. And life is long, and I don't care how strong you are. At some point or another, your hands get tired. At some point or another, you think, I don't know if I can do it with this marriage. I don't know if I have the energy it takes to make this thing go. I just don't know if I can pick my hands up anymore. I don't know if I can continue to love these kids the way they need to be loved. I don't know what to do. I can't pick my hands up anymore. I don't know if I can walk in faith. I just can't see it. I have so many questions. God's disappointed me in these ways. I just don't know if I can keep doing this anymore. And when you're on your own, you're right, you can't. This is why we're placed in community, for our friends to come up beside us and grab our hands and say, hey, buddy, I got you right now. I will fight for your marriage right now. I will hold your hands up and fight for your faith right now. I will stand beside you and hold your hands up for your children and for your business and for your health and for your love of Christ right now. I will stand in this gap for you, and I will be the strength that you don't have. That's what community does for us. Our friends come alongside us, and they hold our hands up, and they give us the energy and the strength for the battle that we can't fight right now. And that's what community offers to others. This is why I think that community, this side of heaven, is the most powerful and effective tool that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Spirit use to tether us to him, to comfort us, and to sustain us in our faith and the commitments that he's led us to making. And I'll end with this because I think this is important. Community is a choice. It's a choice. That kind of community, that kind of community where someone shows up at your door just to wrap their arms around you because they know what you're about to walk through, that kind of community that grabs your hand and holds you up when you can't do it, that kind of community that loves you when you're wandering and keeps you tethered to your faith so that you can wander back. That kind of community, that doesn't happen by default, man. We don't just stumble into that. That kind of community we show up for. Sometimes in small groups, I'll talk about it in a second, we sign up for. And then we let the Lord do his work in bringing us together and knitting lives together. We have to choose that community. Just last night, some friends of ours had a birthday party. And our childcare fell through, and so we had to figure out what to do. And so we decided that Jen was going to go to dinner, and they were going to go to drinks afterwards. Jen was going to go to dinner, and then when she got home, I was going to go and have a drink or two with our friends and then come back. That's what we decided we were going to do. Well, Jen stayed at dinner until like 9.15. I needed her to be back at like 6.15. Do you think, listen, I don't know how well you guys all know me. You think I wanted to go anywhere at 9.30 on Saturday night? No, I was in my gym shorts with paint on them and a big baggy t-shirt and Crocs and I was unshowered. I didn't want to go anywhere. But I also knew that I couldn't get up here today and preach about community if I wasn't going to prioritize my own. So they got Saturday night and ate and I showed up just how I was dressed. And we had ourselves a grand old time over at, I think, Tonic in Wake Forest. We have to choose community. It's not always convenient. You're not always going to want to go to small group. You're not always going to want to prioritize it. Parents of elementary and middle school age kids, you'll never be in a busier season in your whole life. It's so hard right now to prioritize small group. Do it. Community is a choice. It's an essential tool that God has placed in our life to bring us closer to him, to experience his love of us. Thank you for our brothers and sisters who draw us back in our wandering. Thank you for the ones who comfort us. Thank you for the ones who sustain us and hold up our hands when we are too weak to do it. God, give us the desire and the conviction to choose community. To choose to live our faith with those around us. Remove any obstacles that we might have, whether fabricated or real, and knit us together, God, as a church family, that we might love one another well, that we might express your love for one another well. That we might support and sustain one another well. It's in your son's name we ask these things. Amen.
