Well, good morning. My name is Nate. I get to be one of the pastors here. Thank you so much for joining us this morning. If you're joining us online, thank you, or catching up, thank you for doing that. Clearly, you're all getting in your pre-Thanksgiving Sunday because you intend to skip next week. So let's make the most out of this week, and thank you for being here. As we finish up our series in Daniel, we arrive at the third very famous story. So in the first week, we talked about the Daniel diet, Daniel choosing not to eat according to the dictates of the Babylonian empire, but saying, hey, can I set my own standards in what we talked about for holiness for myself? And so we looked at that first week about choosing holiness and choosing our own standards. And then we had a morning of worship. And then last week, we looked at Abinadab, Mishael, and Hananiah, better known as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and the fiery furnace and this idea of even if faith, even if God doesn't do what I expect him to do, I will continue to remain faithful to him. And now we arrive at the last famous story of Daniel, and there's more famous stories. The handwriting on the wall, that phrase comes from the book of Daniel, so there's other famous stories there, but Daniel in the lion's den may be the one that it's most known for, and so that's where we find ourselves this morning. And so as we approach that story, a couple things. When we plan out series as a staff, I kind of have an idea of where I want to go each week. And as we planned this one, I knew where I wanted to go with Daniel and his diet. I knew the holiness, choosing holiness in Babylon. And I knew where I wanted to go with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, even if faith. And I write up a document for the people who make the graphics and for the people who make the videos and for Gibby as he's attempting to assemble worship music around what we're doing. And I kind of summarize everything. And week by week, I'll give a summary. And for this week, I said, I don't know, but I'll figure it out. So I didn't know where I wanted to go with Daniel and the lion's den. And it's probably not where you think I'm going to go this week. Because there's a lot of angles that you can take. Consistent devotion. And I say all the time, the most important thing anybody can do in their life is to wake up every day and spend time in God's word and time in God's presence through prayer. I say that all the time and I try to remind you guys of that because I believe it to be true. You can go with character and what you do behind closed doors is who you are. You can go with when you're alone in the lion's den, God is still with you. There's a lot of approach angles to the story and things to take away. And I don't think that what I'm going to talk about this morning is the only thing to take away, but I think it's what grace needs to take away. And because I want you to understand how we're approaching the story, I want to tell you about two different conversations. One was with a friend of mine, a very good friend, who's another pastor of a church in Georgia. His name is Ken Sermons. For some reason that I don't remember, I called him Keith Hermans. And we went to a pastor's conference together, and I registered him for this conference in Orlando a few years ago, and I him as Keith Herman's and so he had to wear a name tag that said Keith Herman's the whole time which delighted me and then we went to Star Wars the Star Wars area of Disney World together where I had bought us matching t-shirts and we also happened to wear the same color shorts and there's a picture if you look at my Instagram of us in Orlando together and it I don't think at first glance you would assume that we were two pastors just going to a conference together okay but I remember going to that conference with Keith and we sat in the auditorium of the church that was hosting the conference and it was this big monolithic auditorium 3,000 seats stadium seating lights and camera and screen and stage and all this production and so many people in the room and they're doing at, at pastor's conferences, you have to do worship. Whether you want to or not, you have to stand and sing. It doesn't matter. They treat us like we treat you. Stand up, sit down, stand up, sit down, sing this song, and then we're going to preach. This is what they do to us too. And I remember leaning over to Ken because his church is about the size of our church. And I just said, this is so far from everything I love about being a pastor. It's so impersonal. It's so produced. And there's no way as a pastor you can stand up and know the people that you're preaching to. Because it's 3,000 people. And I'm not critiquing those churches at all. They're serving a purpose in the kingdom. But as for me, I don't enjoy that. Every week, whether you realize I'm doing this or not, I call out names. Amel, Jeff, freaking Tom. I call out names. Alice Ann, hello, from Tennessee. Wonderful. Because we're a family. Because we're close. Because the way that I get to pastor you is familiar. Mayor Steve. I get to do that. And I don't want to not do that. And if you're a visitor here, I was told at my last church that when I preached, when I preached at my last church, there was however many people, 650, 700 people in the audience. And then we were simulcast out to three other campuses, two other campuses. And so I was told, don't say anything that a first time guest will not connect with. Don't use names. Don't say anything that they don't have context for. And I've just chosen a grace that I'm going to celebrate when Jan O'Sullivan and Ann Erb are here and they're with us and we've set out your special chairs for you that we set out every week because we love you. We're going to celebrate that. And we're going to be a family. And if it's your first time here or your second or third time here and you're like, I don't know about grace, just know we love each other. And as part of that, I'm going to talk to us as people and as individuals. So here's another conversation that I had. This one was with my dad. And my mom gives me flack because I talk about my dad more than I talk about her. So, Mom, Donna, I'm sorry. I love you. I love you. I love you more than Dad. You're far less annoying than him. Okay? But as we've gone through this building campaign that we've been languishing in for five years, we're going to have a meeting about it on December the 14th. I hope that you can come. I'm tired of it, and you are too. So let's see if we can't get to the end of this joker. But as we've gone through it, my dad has been on boards and has piloted efforts and campaigns to get buildings out of the ground for churches. And we've talked a couple of times. And when we'll talk, he's like, have you considered this? Have you considered this? Have you considered this? Do you need to do this? And he's giving me his advice and counsel, which is warranted because he has more experience than me in this space because he's done it a few times. But every time he asked me if I've considered this, I say, yeah, dad, we, we, we put a committee together. And on that committee, we have two career, um, corporate real estate agents. We have another career corporate real estate agent that we're calling on for advice, but they're not sitting in the committee, but we're talking to them. We have a corporate banker that is in charge of corporate loans at his bank, which is a pretty good bank. We have two general contractors who are advising us because they've done this professionally. And dad quickly realizes, which is very difficult for him to do, that the expertise in the room is beyond his. And at every turn at Grace, when we need to make a decision or we need to do something, what I realize is I'm surrounded by leaders. I'm surrounded by experts with influence. And one of the things, I share that story because then my dad says, how do you get all of these people to come to this church? And I say, I have no idea. I think it's the music. Or the children's ministry, which thanks to Kyle is great. Aaron's old news. This is wonderful. But here's my point. I have been aware of for a while that we have an unusual confluence of influence in this church. We have an unusually high capacity church. There are more of you per capita. If we were to go to another church and compare just per capita, what are your direct reports? What are your professional accomplishments? What kind of manager are you? What kind of CEO are you? What kind of leadership do you exhibit in your life at Grace? And this is just true. And this is why I shared the story of Ken, of, hey, that church is so far from what I want to be because it allows me to know you. And here's what I know about grace. And this is why I'm approaching the story this way this morning. We have an unusual confluence of influence here. We do. We have more people who are high capacity than if you were to just randomly gather 225 folks per week into a room. Our potential here and our influence here is outsized compared to that. And that's honestly, so what? Who cares? But it is also true. And so I want us to acknowledge that we have, I'm talking as I look out, I'm talking to many people who have direct reports, who there's an org chart and your name is on it and under it there are more names. I'm talking to people who have started businesses. I'm talking to people who have developed leaders. I'm talking to people who have been to leadership conferences and care deeply about that. And as I say that, that we have an unusual confluence of influence here, as I say that, there are some in this room who would check out and go, well, I'm a stay-at-home mom, so this one's not for me. Do you not think you're influencing those kids growing up with you? Do you not think you're influencing the people that you are in a small group with? Every person in this room has influence. At different capacities and for different reasons. And we find ourselves at different rungs on the ladder. But every person in this room has influence. I was, this is a funny right turn, I was on the streets of Istanbul in March with my friend Ru. And Ru had just done a session with Iranian pastors. Ru trains pastors who serve in countries where faith is illegal. Christian faith is illegal. And we were going back and forth on leadership and what it was. And we arrived at this definition of leadership. And those of you who have been to leadership conferences and have thought about it and have read books, you can try this on for size and see what you think. But here's what we concluded. Leadership is intentionally deployed influence. Leadership is intentionally deployed influence leadership is intentionally deployed influence it's acknowledging I have influence over the people around me I can impact the people who are here I have direct reports and I can influence them and this works vertically and. Maybe I have a vertical position where there are people below me and I can influence them because their job requires me to allow me to influence them. Or maybe it's horizontal. I have people on my team. I have no authority over them, but I can exert influence with them and through them. So leadership, I believe, is acknowledging that we have influence in different places in our lives and then intentionally deploying that to an end that we desire. There is the context that I want you to have as we approach the story of Daniel and the lion's den. Here's the story. Many of you know it, but let's review. Daniel was taken captive by the Babylonians, we assume in his late teens or early 20s. And he was put in with a group of other captives to be trained for service in the Babylonian government. And he served under King Nebuchadnezzar. And then Nebuchadnezzar was succeeded by Belshazzar. So he served under Belshazzar. And then Belshazzar was slain by King Darius, who is the king of the Persians and the Medes, who took over the Babylonian empire and set up the Persian empire. And even if you have no idea what the Bible says about anything, if you're a student of history, you know that Darius was a big deal and the Persian empire was a big deal. And that's where Daniel finds himself. And so we find Daniel likely as an older man who spent his life in government service. He's been doing it for a long time. And when Darius takes over, when he kills Belshazzar and claims the throne for himself, he looks at Daniel and he says, you're good. I want to keep you. It makes me think of Jen's dad, John, who was a VP of something or other at Bell South and then AT&T bought them out. And every vice president except for John from Bell South got fired. And then they put him in charge of all the AT&T properties over all the world. He was on the phone at 4 a.m. one day because there was a flood in Hong Kong. That's what he was doing. He was the one guy they kept. And so Daniel was the one that got kept by King Darius. And there was, it says, the text says there was 120 satraps, which is a foreign word to us. We don't know what that is, but that's essentially a governor. We're going to divide up the Persian Empire into these different provinces, and a satrap oversees that province. And then over the 120, there was three satraps. And then over the three, there was one. And it says that Darius wanted to make Daniel that one. He essentially, in our terms, wanted to make Daniel the managing partner of Persia. This was a big deal. He had garnered and gathered a lot of influence over the years. He had shown himself excellent. And he wasn't just rewarded by the first king, Nebuchadnezzar, by the second king, Belshazzar, but the third king realized his talent and elevated him. Darius made him the managing partner of Persia. And the rest of the satraps got jealous and the administrators and the governors. And so they went to Darius with this ploy, with this plot. And they said, hey, for 30 days, let no one in our empire worship anyone or anything but you. And if they do, let's throw them in the lion's den. Listen, this is just an aside. Why do kings have lion's dens? What are they doing with those? Seems like a lot of upkeep. You need a zoologist of some sort. Probably a veterinarian. You know. I don't know what you have to do to take care of lions. But he had a lion's den. And they said, and it was well known apparently. And they said, if people don't worship you for the next 30 days, put them in the lion's den. And then there was an edict released. This is what they said. This is what they said to Darius. Just so we're on the same page in the text. Daniel chapter 6 verse 6. And satraps went as a, issue the decree and put it in writing so that it cannot be altered in accordance with the law of the Medes and the Persians, which cannot be repealed. So King Darius put the decree in writing. So they went to him with this ruse and they appealed to his ego. And they said, may you live forever. You're the best. Let's put in writing that for the next 30 days, everyone has to worship you. And if they worship anybody else, they're going to be put to death in the lion's den. Put it in writing so it's true. And he did. They appealed to his ego and he signed it. And it went into practice. As soon as the decree was issued, the very next thing in the story is Daniel goes to his house. He goes to his room in the city and he opens the windows. And he opens the windows so that he could face Jerusalem. And you may not know this, and I did not know this before I went, but in 2013, I had the opportunity to go to Israel. And one of the things I learned over there was that all of the temples in Israel are built facing the temple in Jerusalem, the temple. And there is some sort of orientation within every temple that exists on the planet that faces it towards Jerusalem. So it's a very Jewish thing to face Jerusalem where God is. At this time, there was still the Holy of Holies. It was the presence of God. And so Daniel opened his windows, not to show that he was praying, not to be bold in what he was doing, but because he wanted to face the very presence of God. He was a man of humble faith. And so he opens the windows and he prays. And the jealous satraps see him doing this and they go to King Darius and they say, your servant Daniel has refused to worship you. He's worshiping his Hebrew God. And Darius is in a pickle. And to his credit, he's torn about this. He realizes his decree and what he needs to do. But he also loves Daniel. But he goes and he gets Daniel and he puts him in the lion's den. And it says that he had a sleepless night because he was hoping for the heart and the health of Daniel. And he says he wakes up the next morning and he rushes to the den and he sees that Daniel is healthy and alive and intact and in joy. He says, remove the stone. And he calls Daniel out and he celebrates with Daniel, and then hear, Darius, Cyrus, Daniel persists. His leadership persists. His influence persists. And when I read this story to get ready to preach to grace, the thing that jumped off the page to me, and this is why I have this story of the conference at the beginning and what it must be like to preach to 3,000 or 4,000 people and how much I love preaching to the people of grace. The thing that jumped off the page to me was not to reiterate devotion, was not to reiterate consistency. It was the juxtaposition. Knowing that we are a people of influence, knowing that we are a high-capacity people that impact the lives of others when we leave this space. It was the juxtaposition between how Darius and Daniel used their influence. Darius used it to point to himself. They came to him and they said, oh king, may you live forever, which is stupid. No one lives forever. That's just a silly thing. The fact that your ego needs that is automatically ridiculous. But they said, may you live forever. And then they proposed that everybody should worship you for 30 days. What kind of a leader wants that? A sycophant. It's kind of unbelievable. But he used, Darius was a man that had incredible influence. Absolutely incredible influence. He was a leader. He had intentionally deployed influence. He was someone that impacted millions of people. And what did he use that influence for? To point to himself. Worship me for 30 days. And so the juxtaposition of Darius and Daniel, to look at Daniel who had garnered influence over the course of four different kings, four different reigns. I don't know what your experience is in the corporate space, but if you've had four different bosses, you know how difficult it is to ingratiate yourself to a different person after a different person after a different person and to be one that rises above that means you must be someone of great potential and so that's what Daniel did and then he had an opportunity to use his influence and how did he use it by opening his windows and praying and pointing himself towards God. And pointing other people towards God. In Darius, we have someone of great influence and impact who uses that influence to point people towards himself. In Daniel, we have someone of great influence and impact who uses that influence to point people towards his God. And so the question before us this morning is, how are you going to use your influence? With your direct reports, in your career, in your company, in your school, on your team, with your clients, with your children, with your family, in your small group, with your friends. You have influence. How are you going to use it? Are you going to use it like Darius to point people towards yourself? With your grandkids? Or are you going to use it like Daniel to point to God? How are you going to use your influence? And that question would be enough of a landing zone, but I think it begs another. How do we cultivate that influence? How do we become the kind of people who impact the people around us towards God? If we can acknowledge that we have influence in various lives and in various ways, and we want to use that influence, not like Darius, but like Daniel, how can we use it to push people towards God? And how do we develop more of it so that we might push people closer to God. Here's what I would say. Influence is developed by displaying character over time. Influence is developed by displaying character over time. Character, I've been told since I was young, is what you do when no one can see what you're doing. What do you do alone? Do you pursue God? Do you pray? Do you do the little things, the small acts of kindness to someone that you have nothing to gain from except to be kind to them. This influence in our lives and with the people around us is developed by small acts of character over time. Think about your workplace and the people you work around. Think about the people that you trust the most. Think about the people that you respect the most. If you think about the people that you respect the most, isn't it true of them that what you've seen is over time they make the right choice over and over and over again? They say the hard thing when it needs to be said. They do the honest thing when it needs to be done. The people that you respect the most, haven't they over time displayed character? And every time you display character, isn't that a little bit of money in the bank on what influence is? One of my heroes in my faith and in my life is a man named Israel Gonzalez. I can feel it now. I might get emotional as I share his story. Please excuse me. Israel is a hero of the faith for me. He's a hero in life. From about 2008 to about 2013, I got to take some trips to Honduras. And in Honduras, I met Israel. Israel is a pastor. And he's an immigrant to Honduras from Nicaragua. And he married a woman who's a doctor. And Israel felt compelled to plant a church. So he planted a church called Christian Community Honduras. I don't know what it is in Spanish. I don't speak Spanish. Andrew, you could help me out with that. I have no idea. Or probably Doris. She's more reliable than you. And out of Christian Community Honduras, he discipled a young man. And he trained him and he raised him up to be a pastor. And he sent him out to plant a church. And the way that you plant churches in Honduras, which is a deeply traditionally Catholic nation and is also always in the bottom three of poverty in the Western Hemisphere. So he's in a city called Ciguarapeque. And in the mountains and hills surrounding Ciguatapeque are these villages and towns. And he goes into those villages and towns. And you have to literally, this is foreign to us, this sounds weird to us, but you have to ingratiate yourself to the town elders. And so to do that, he throws parties. And if you go on a mission trip, that's what you do, is you throw a party in these towns. And you serve hot dogs and you serve ice cream and you hang out with the kids. And I would go and get out of the van and throw a soccer ball up in the air. And 40 kids would come running and you just play soccer for forever. And then the other people who speak Spanish would minister to the parents and to the grandparents and to the adults in the village. And it was a wonderful experience, but he was doing that to gain traction with the village elders who would then approach him and say, we'd like a church here. They would have to ask for a church. And then he would take someone he had been training at his church and send them out to be the pastors of those churches. And this is his model of ministry. The other thing he would do, and this is incredible, the other thing he would do to ingratiate himself to the village is in Honduras, because of the poverty, they're cooking on open flame indoors, and that would cause smoke inhalation and cause people to die of lung cancer at accelerated rates. So Israel, and this is true, invented a stove, invented an oven that reduces smoke inhalation by 90%. He had it studied by Duke, and he had it studied by the University of Indiana, and he got a patent for a patent for it a patent thanks Tom I'm just looking at you helped he got a patent for it and you can give to Israel an amount of money that will allow him to buy the materials and build a stove and they go into these villages into the favored mothers of the. And they take out their old stove and they rebuild this new stove so that they don't have to breathe in smoke. And he does this to ingratiate himself to the villages so that he can build churches there. So that the gospel can go out. He uses his influence to point towards God. And here's a couple amazing things about Israel. If he did that in America, we'd put him on podcasts. We'd put him on stages with a thousand people. We'd make him famous. We'd give him money. And oh, by the way, with the extra money that he gets from the stoves, they built a clinic and his wife left her practice and she practices free medicine on the people in Ciguatapeque. Not for nothing. If he did all that here, he'd be a celebrity. But because he doesn't on Honduras, he's nobody. And I can't wait to get to heaven and meet more people like Israel. But let me tell you about his influence and what character does. These small acts when no one else is watching. One visit to Honduras, it was the last day, so it was R&R day. And you guys who have been on mission trips know that Americans demand at least one day of tourism at the end of serving God. You have to do it. Otherwise they won't come the next year. So we did our American day of tourism and we went to a waterfall. The waterfall was an hour away from Ciguarpeque, outside of what I would anticipate Israel's range of mission to be. And there wasn't enough room in the van, and so I ended up riding in the car with Israel. And we had a good conversation. I don't remember the conversation. It was his broken English and my non-Spanish. But we talked. And at one point he said, hey, brother, I have to make a pit stop. I hope you don't mind. That's fine. I was actually, I was really ticked. I was like, Israel, we've got to get to the waterfall. But no, he said, I need to make a stop. So we pull up. We're in this kind of community. And if you've spent time in third world countries, you know that that homes kind of double as bodegas. Sometimes homes are homes and their residences and their places of business. And this was one of those places. And we pull up in front of a home and the garage is open. And you can see the garage looks like essentially a makeshift convenience store. And it's over there and Israel's in the driver's seat and I'm sitting right here and he rolls down my window and he yells something at the proprietor. And the man looks and says, oh, hello Israel! And then turns and he yells something into the house. And immediately this kid, this teenage kid comes out of the house. And the first thing you notice about this kid, that any of us would notice about this kid, is that they were extremely special needs. So this special needs kid comes out of the house and sees that Israel's there and begins to make noises of excitement. And then get this, goes to the cooler, opens it up and gets out a Mountain Dew. He knows Israel's order. It's funny, but catch that. Israel's been there before. He's got a lot of Mountain Dews here. This kid's excited to see him. And he walks to the car with a Mountain Dew, and Israel gets out and he hugs him. And they have this moment in excited Spanish that I don't need to hear the words to understand. And I'm sitting there, sorry, in the passenger seat, marveling at this man who has made friends with a kid who lives an hour away from him, who will never give to his ministry, who he will never train to be a pastor and send out into the villages, who he has absolutely nothing to gain from. An hour away. He's not making a show in the middle of the city and going, hey, everybody else who can see me, look at the way I love. No one will ever know about that. And if I weren't in the car, 100% chance Israel stops there anyways. What kind of man is it to use your influence like that? To love like that? To point people towards God like that? In the story of Daniel in the lion's den, I see a picture of two men using their influence in different ways. I believe at grace we have an unusual confluence of influence. And I believe that we can use it to point towards God. And I believe that we can use it to be the kind of man that Daniel was, that Israel is, and that with what we have here, we can deploy all of our assets to point people towards God and who He is. Yeah? Let's pray. God, thank You for Your servant Daniel. Thank You for Your servant Israel. Thank You for this room and this body of people that does have great influence. And God, I pray that as we consider our influence, that we would use it to point people towards you. May our coworkers be better, be more inclined towards you because they worked with us. May our employees be closer to you and more inclined towards you because they worked for us. May our families desire you more because they were in a family with us that you assigned us to. Father, use us. Pull us towards you. And help us bring people with us. In Jesus' name, amen.

Well, good morning, everyone. My name is Nate. I get to be one of the pastors here. Thank you for joining us at Grace. I was late into the service this morning. Anecdotally, I'm just indulging myself. This has nothing to do with anything. I was just happy with the moment. When I was growing up, I got in trouble at church all the time. Me and my best friend, PJ Smith, we got kicked out of every ministry that ever existed at our church because we were troublemakers. And my senior pastor, a guy named Buddy Hoffman, used to, in Sunday night service, back when we encumbered our pastors with having to preach two sermons on one Sunday, he would call me out, Chris, stop talking to Karen, or do I need to get Donna to come down here and sit between you two? Like that kind of stuff in the service. And as a 12-year-old, that's mortifying. And I just remember that as what my pastor did. And I was next door refilling my water and getting ready to come over here. And there was a kid that got a little sideways. And the teacher had to pull him out. And the kid wasn't really listening to the teacher. And so I had to crouch down and get real stern with said kid and say, you're going to get right. And he says, she's not my mom. And I said, yeah, you're right, but she's your teacher. And if you don't listen to her, I'm going to go get your mom. And it was just like, and she said, thanks, Nate. I was like, you're welcome. Also, Carly, it was your, no, I'm just kidding. It was not, it was not, it was not. This morning, we're in our second part of Daniel, where we're going through the first portion of the book, the narrative portion of the book, and looking at these stories and asking what we can learn from them and what they have for us now. This morning, we arrive at the story of the fiery furnace, one of my favorite stories in the Bible, in the Old Testament, and I'm thrilled to arrive at it now. It's a story about Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, but years ago, I went to Honduras on a mission trip, and I got to know a man named Mark Searcy, who's a custom home builder in western North Carolina. But in his teenage and 20, in his late teens and 20s, he was a missionary to Haiti and has this missionary background. And he's really southern and really. And one of my favorite humans I've ever met. And he's, he told me that, uh, that I'm not going to tell him what, I'm not going to tell you what he calls, uh, Nebuchadnezzar. I'll tell you if you ask me after the service, I'll tell you, but I'm not going to tell you from here. Uh, he, and he said that Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego are the demon names for those boys because their real names were Benadab, Mishael, and Hananiah. Those were their Hebrew names that all meant some sort of praise to God. And they were renamed by the Babylonian government, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, what we know them by. And those are their demon names because those give praise to the Babylonian gods. And I'm not sure how convinced I am of Mark's perspective, but I do think it's interesting that there is, that there have been a dad, Mishael and Hananiah. Those are their God given, the names given by their Jewish parents that give praise to God. And I do think it's good as we remember the story to know their real names. But in the Bible and in the story, they're referred to as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. So we will refer to them as that. And here's the situation. Last week, we talked about the exile and basically Jewish slaves being carried to Babylon to serve in their court and that they took some of the elite, the cream of the crop, young men, and they installed them in the government. They put them through a training process and then they installed them in the government and gave them different roles. And so Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego have been prepared for that, and they've now been installed in their roles, and they've reached the upper echelons of government. And as such, they've made their peers jealous of them. So there are native Babylonians that are now working with them or even under them that have become jealous of their progress and of their success. And that's the environment. And in the midst of this environment, there's an edict that goes out. King Nebuchadnezzar erects a gold statue of himself. And there's an edict that whenever music is played, and in the Bible, this is where in Daniel chapter three, I'm going to look at some verses in a minute. So if you have a Bible and you want to turn there, that's where we are. But it says in the Bible that whenever these instruments, the lyre and the harp and the whatever, and the trumpet and whatever are played, then you should bow and worship the golden image or just bow towards the golden image and worship Nebuchadnezzar, who has now deified himself. And Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego don't agree to this. Whenever the music plays, they don't worship. And I was thinking about this as I was rereading the story and reacquainting myself with it. It's difficult to believe that they would stand in the city center obstinately going like this and saying, we're not going to worship. It's more easy to believe that they would discreetly and respectfully move off to the side and just kind of let everyone else do their thing. I certainly don't know what the situation was, but I seriously doubt they made a big show of not worshiping. I think they just didn't worship. But some of their peers noticed this and told on them. They went to King Nebuchadnezzar and they ratted them out. They told on them. And this is a lesson for all the, everybody, if you're in here and you're under 15, raise your hand. Snitches get stitches. All right. That's a real thing. Don't do this. Don't tell on people. That's for you. They told on them. And they said, hey, whenever the music plays, these people aren't worshiping you. They're not honoring you. And the text says that Nebuchadnezzar was enraged. He was an emotionally volatile man from everything we can tell from the text. Nebuchadnezzar was enraged, and he calls them in. And he's furious at them. And he says, I've heard you guys. I've brought you in. I've supported you. I've trained you. I've elevated you. I've progressed you. I've given you success. I've given you affluence. And as a thank you, you refuse to worship me. He's furious at them. He says, if you don't worship me, I'm going to play the music. I'm going to turn on Spotify. And if you don't worship me, I'm going to burn you in the fiery furnace. That's the threat. So that's the situation and that's where we are. And this is their response to King Nebuchadnezzar. And I think it is a remarkable response. Daniel chapter three, verses 16 through 18. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied to him, King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we. That's the most important phrase in the story. But even if he does not, we want you to know, your majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up. So he brings these young men before him. He's this enraged king surrounded by guards. And he says, if you don't worship me, I'm going to throw you into the furnace. I'm going to burn you alive. And their response is, we do not need to defend ourselves against you in this matter, which is difficult to parse out. And different theologians would say different things, because with this limited story we get from the text, it's difficult to know exactly what their intent is. And so this is a guess. But my guess is that they believe that Nebuchadnezzar knew of their faith. That they believe that he knew, like, hey, we're worshipers of the Hebrew God. We're not worshipers of other gods. We don't need to defend ourselves against you. I don't think it was defiant. I don't think it was, no, no, no, I'm not going to talk about that with you. You don't deserve that. I'm not going to answer that question. It was, it was more of, I believe, you know who we are. You know who we worship. That's not going to change. And that God that we worship is going to protect us. Throw us in there. He'll protect us. And even if he doesn't, we're going to continue to believe in him. And we will not worship you. That's their response. When they responded in that way, Nebuchadnezzar is so angry that he looks at his guards and he says, make the furnace seven times hotter, which is a hilarious command. Because if you're on fire, you're on fire. You know, does it get worse if it's seven times? Like if your arms on fire and then you make it seven times hotter, is that a worse fire on your arm? Like I don't understand that. And I also don't understand in ancient Babylon how you gauge what seven times hotter is. But that's what he says. Make it seven times hotter. And it was so hot that one of the guards that bound them and threw them into the furnace burned up himself because he got too close to the flame, which is a really tough way to go. But that's what happens. And he throws them into the flame. And then he's watching them in the flames, expecting to see them burn up. I don't know if there was like a bulletproof, like double-pane glass that was heatproof that he could see through, or if it was just like an open furnace. I don't know how it worked, but he's looking in and he's seeing them, and he notices something. And this is what the text says, Daniel 3, 24 through 26. Then King Nebuchadnezzar leapt to his feet in amazement and asked his advisors, weren't there three men that were tied up and threw into the fire? They replied, certainly, your majesty. He said, look, I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods. Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace there three people in the house, but only are there three people who are unharmed, but there's a fourth. And the text just says he looks like a son of the gods. And here's a thing that I like to do with the Old Testament. We don't know who that was. We don't know who the fourth person was in there with them. It could have been an angel. Some people think it could have been Jesus himself. And here's what I do as a highly trained theologian. Whenever... Shut up. That's great. I'm a very lowly train. I'm not a pastor, theologian. That's crazy. Anyways, just the snicker from the 26 year old was deserved. It was deserved. Whenever we have the opportunity in the Old Testament to put Jesus in a place, we should. So maybe it was an angel. But I think it was Jesus. I think he showed up with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. And he said, I'm with you. You have faith in me. I'm with you. And he protects them from the fiery furnace. You can extrapolate that out however you like. But I think Jesus was there. I think Jesus was there in the form of Melchizedek when Abraham showed up in Salem and gave a tithe to him. For me, it's just cooler to allow Jesus to show up wherever it seems like he does. So who knows who is there? And who knows who wrote Hebrews? But let's make guesses. And I think that was Jesus there in the furnace with them. When Nebuchadnezzar sees this, he calls them out. Come out right away. And the ties that bound their hands were done. They were burned up, but they were unharmed completely by the flames. And his response, if weadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who sent his angel and rescued his servants. They trusted in him and defied the king's command and were willing to give up their lives rather than serve or worship any god except their own god. Therefore, this is important, I decree that the people of any nation or language who say anything against the God of them must be cut to pieces and their houses be turned into piles of rub is, if you honor God, you will get a promotion. He sees what happens. Also, that's false. He sees what happens and he calls them out. And he says, he gives praise to this God that he was moments ago committed to defying. Do you see? And so that's the story. And then God gets the glory. So that's the story of, and that's all the rhyming I'm going to do. That's the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and the fiery furnace. And it's a wonderful story. And typically, when I preach a sermon, I'm really, whether you've noticed it or not, doing my best to try to get us to like one point to think about. I'm trying to drive the ship to this one thing for us to consider. And I'd love to do that with this story, but here's the problem. It's too grand of a story to reduce to one point. I've also been your pastor now for eight years, and this is the first time I've preached on it. I don't see myself getting back to it anytime soon. So instead of just saying one thing, I want to pull out three things from this story that we learned for us to consider this morning. And I would encourage you to weigh them with equal weight and to decide and determine this morning. We don't have the capacity to apply three things to ourselves and do three new things in our lives and all the things. So one of these three things, I think and I hope and I and I pray will connect with you. And I would invite you to just grab onto the one that does. And maybe you'll get to the end of them and be like, is there a fourth one? I don't, none of those mattered, but hopefully one of these three will be something that relates to you. So the first thing we see in this story is simply this. Holiness matters. Holiness matters. It matters in life. It matters to God. It should matter to you. Holiness matters. Last week, this is what we talked about. We talked about Daniel being trained by the Babylonians and being offered this new diet. And with this diet, he was encouraged to eat stuff that was outside the purview of the Jewish laws in which he grew up. And so he said, I'm going to refuse that and choose this vegetarian vegan diet. And let's just see how it goes. So he chose holiness. And when I say holiness, here's what I mean, because this is what the Bible means. The word holy means different and more accurately, it means other. So when we say holy, and when God said, when we say about God, holy, holy, holy, what we are saying is different, different, different, other than us, set aside from us, not the same as us. And so when we say we act with holiness, we pursue holiness, what we're saying is we're pursuing being different. And what we talked about last week is we're pursuing being different from the society in which we find ourselves entrenched. We are not citizens of the United States. We are not citizens of North Carolina. We find ourselves residing here. We are aliens in those places, and we are citizens of heaven. And so our behavior and our standards should be not in line with the given standards of North Carolina or Raleigh or North Raleigh or wherever it is you find yourself. Our standards for ourselves should be in line with what scripture says and who God tells us to be. That's what holiness is. Now, I had lunch with a friend of mine this week. And, excuse me, and he he was saying how does a leaf get up on this stage like all the way in looky there I had lunch with a friend of mine and he was saying that he enjoyed last week's sermon but that he wanted when I got I got to the holy part, to the diet, he wanted to say, what's the diet? Give me the standards. Tell me what to do. He's like, I don't know how everybody feels, but sometimes I like to get kicked in the teeth on Sunday morning. Like, make me feel a little bit bad. Like, ruffle my feathers a little bit and tell me what the standards should be. Tell me what we should watch and what we shouldn't watch. And tell me what we should think and what we shouldn't think. And tell me what practices in my life, like get on to me a little bit. And I said, I'll never do that. I'll never do that. That's not what I'm here to do. Because holiness, this is going to sound odd, is gray. It's different things for different people. I'm never going to get up here and tell you what it looks like to be holy as if I am that. You guys are smart, responsible adults with the gift of the Holy Spirit. Most of you. I believe in your capacity to decide what holiness is for you. I'm not going to sit up here and list standards off by which you should live. I'm going to trust you to establish those for yourself. And here's one of the reasons. I've given this example before. Years ago, I found myself, and I still do, as a big fan of NBA playoff basketball. I hate the regular season. I think the mid-season tournament is one of the dumbest things I've ever encountered in my life. That joke's going to land with 5% of you, but you know who you are. But I would watch the NBA playoffs because I like it. I like sports. I watch all the sports. And I like the playoffs. But the playoffs would keep me up because of the West Coast games until 1, 1.30, 2 o'clock in the morning. And by watching them every night, I was getting up later than I needed to. And sometimes it would cause me to either miss my quiet time, which you've heard me say a hundred times. The most important habit anyone can develop in their life is to wake up every day and spend time in God's word and time in his presence through prayer. You've heard me say that over a hundred times, if you've been here for any length of time and by staying up late and watching those games, it was causing me to wake up late and either have a truncated quiet time or none at all. And so it was impacting me spiritually. So it became unholy for me to stay up watching basketball games. But I'm not going to stand on this stage and tell you it's unholy to watch sports. That's how it's great. You have to determine how your behaviors impact you and how they push you to God or not and what diet is right for you. But here's what I know based on this story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, is that holiness matters. Here's the second thing I know from this story. God is always working for his glory. God is always working for his glory. You see in the story that they get into this scenario where they've been told on. It's a bad scene. And they could have justified their way out of it, couldn't they? They could have said, God, I'm going to bow down to Nebuchadnezzar so I don't die. And so that I can remain in this place and influence in the right way. I mean, if I die, they're just going to replace me with a godless Babylonian. You don't want that to happen. So like, I'm just going to do this. I don't mean it, but I'm going to bow down. They didn't do that. They were in a tough spot. And they had this standard because they chose holiness of I can't bow down to Nebuchadnezzar. And at any point, God could have intervened and saved them. But he waited until the very last minute to save them in the fiery furnace. And so they were in this predicament that was preventable, but God didn't prevent. He allowed his servants to continue to suffer. And what we see at the end of that is that God was working for his glory because what's the result of the story? The result of the story is Nebuchadnezzar declares, no one will ever blaspheme the God of the Hebrew people. No one will ever blaspheme the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. And by allowing them to go through this difficult phase and rescuing them at the very last minute, God made his own name great. Do you see? It was declared throughout Babylon because of that. There's an edict that went out that we will honor this God now. So it's important for us to hear from the story that whatever God is doing, he's doing it to work his own glory. I have a friend who, when he graduated, he got in with an accounting firm. And he began to just work and work diligently and work hard and do what you do in that stage of your career and kind of rise in the ranks and yada, yada, yada. And he ended up making partner with two other folks. And so now he's a partner with two other people, but he feels a sense of injustice because they don't work as hard as he does. They have this kind of mentality that once you make partner, now you have employees to do the work and you get to make the money off of what they do. And he felt like, no, you have to outwork your employees. And then he looked at his partners who he viewed as lazy and they are not working as hard. And this frustrated him and it caused years of frustration. And then eventually what happened was, and he's, by the way, going to church, he's a deacon at his church. He's, he's one of these people and he's getting frustrated with the situation because it feels unjust and it feels unfair. And he's like, God, I'm honoring you. Why are you, why is this happening? And then there's a personal fallout and he actually gets kicked out of the partnership and he has to start from scratch. And so he finds himself in his mid-30s with children starting from scratch and going, God, how is this happening? Why is this happening? This seems unfair. But he starts from scratch and he builds a new company and develops new partners. And you fast forward another 15, 20 years after that, and his firm exists and gives 20 to 30% of their profits to nonprofit organizations building God's kingdom around the globe. And he has people on his payroll whose entire job is to do the finances of nonprofits for free. He had to go through a hard time and be recalibrated. But it was to be recalibrated for God's glory. So that this person could be, so that my friend could be used to bring glory to God in his kingdom in a greater way. Some of us in here may find ourselves going through times that seem hard and seem preventable. God, if you wanted to fix this, you could. God, if you wanted to rescue, you could. God, if you wanted to restore, you could. If you wanted to repair, you could. If you wanted to heal, you could. And maybe he's not. But God doesn't work in days. He works in decades. And he works in centuries. And here's what I know about God based on this story and many others. God is always working for his glory. And he will involve you. In that path. If you stick with him. Like Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. So God is always working for his glory. Here's the last thing. And this one. I said consider them with equal weight. But this is my favorite one. And I stole this one from a friend of mine who I hadn't talked to in years. And I actually called him this week and I said, Hey dude, he's a guy, his name's Alan Smith. He's on staff at my last church. He's still there as a campus pastor. And he and I worked together. And I remember him preaching this sermon. This was the first sermon that he preached. It was on Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego when he had a chance to preach at the last church. And I called him this week and I said, dude, I'm preaching that story. And I remember the point you made. And I'm totally stealing it. But I'm going to give you credit. Like just so you know, I'm not going to pretend like this is my idea and my insight. and we had a good catch up and whatever. But this is not from me. This is from Alan. Not that Alan. This is from another Alan. Here's the question that I come out of with this story. And this is the thing I want to leave you with. Do you have, even if, faith? Do you have, even if, faith? I told you those words were the most important words in the story, and I told you that we were going to come back to them. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego said, Nebuchadnezzar, O king, if you throw us in the furnace, our God will protect us. But even if he doesn't, we will still worship him. Do you ever see the power of that? I believe my God can heal my dad. But even if he doesn't, I'm going to worship him. I believe my God can repair this. But even if he doesn't, I'm going to worship him. I believe that my God can make this better. But even if he chooses not to, but even if he doesn't, I will remain faithful. Do you know how hard it is? Many of you have walked through it, and you know what even if faith is. Do you know how hard it is to feel let down by God and say, but even if he lets me down and he doesn't do the thing that I think he's going to do or that I want him to do or that I need him to do or that I'm desperate for him to do or that I'm weeping for him to do, even if he doesn't do it, I will still choose him. That's even if faith. I had a conversation this last week and it made my week, man. I used to be a high school teacher. And Honeymoon is a football coach, Mike Devine. And I got really close with a particular class. And there were some of the kids, some of the guys that I got really close with. So close that I'll tell you this. One of my greatest regrets, this guy's name's Alex Williams, and we went to the lake. I took them to my in-law's lake house. And we were joking about getting tattoos, and I don't have any tattoos. We were joking about getting tattoos, and Alex said, I'll get a matching one with you. And I said, what do you want to get? And we decided that it would be great to get 100% awesome written on our butt cheek. I wish I had that tattoo. Golly, what a miss. That would be great. But I don't. But Alex and I were that kind of close. And in his junior and senior year, Alex's dad was dying of cancer. And I have a vivid memory of bringing in some of the other men and dads from the class into my classroom. And we gathered around Ron. And we prayed for God to heal him. And God did heal him. He just healed him in eternity. He didn't heal him here. And so Alex lost his dad. After losing his dad, his mom, understandably so, kind of went off the rails. And his two elementary age brothers had to move in with Alex at 19 years old. And he found himself as the caretaker for them. He had a hard go. And Alex always loved Jesus, but this was a hard season. And I lost touch with him for a while. I would see him on Facebook. He's got a wife. He's got a young family. He seems to be doing well and be thriving. And I got a Facebook message, which I don't check very often because it was two weeks old. But he reached out to me and he said, hey, I'm doing okay in life. And I want to give to people who need it. How do I do that? And so I said, this is a great conversation to have, dude. Let's talk. And we talked and he said, and this is, you guys will find this funny. Um, and it's sad that it's true. He said, you're the fourth pastor I've talked to. I'm involved in the church. I've talked to three other pastors. Can you guess where they told me to give my money? And he said, I knew you wouldn't do that, so I called you. And I said, 10% of everything we give goes to you. We had a great conversation. We caught up. We shared stories about the time I got too excited as a football coach and punched him in the stomach in the middle of a game. Not because I was mad, because I was pumped up. I was like, let's go get him. And I accidentally hit Alex. Anyways, it was a wonderful conversation. And he's coming to Raleigh. He's doing a bid on our church. He's a general contractor. He might build our church. Who knows if that's what God is orchestrating. But he's going to come here, and when he comes here, I'm going to lay out in front of him six nonprofits that I know of and say, whatever God directs your heart, get involved in these. But these are good people and they're doing good things. And I'm so thrilled to be able to do that. But here's the point of that story. That's even if faith. Isn't it? Even if you don't heal my dad. Even if my mom goes off the rails. Even if I adopt my brothers at the age of 19. Even if I have to go through trials and I can't go to college. I will find a way, and when I do, God, I'm going to honor you. As soon as you give me the means, I'm going to honor you. That's even if faith. So that's the question that I would leave you with today. Do you have even if faith? Let's pray and we'll take communion. Father, thank you so much for this morning. Thank you for this wonderful church and group of people. Thank you for the way that you allow us to love you and one another. Thank you for speaking to us through the stories of the Old Testament and this morning, hopefully, through the story of Ben-Hadad, Mishael, and Hananiah. Thank you for your servants then and your servants now. God, as we move into this time of communion, we just pray that we would reflect and be grateful for the way that you love us, for the way that you're always working for your glory. I pray that we would pursue holiness and that we would, if we don't have it now, progress towards an even-if faith. It's in your Son's name we pray these things. Amen.

Well, good morning, Grace. My name is Erin, and I get the privilege of being one of the pastors here. And thank you for being here this morning, whether you're joining us online or whether you're here in person. We are just grateful that you chose to carve a little bit of your Sunday out to spend it with us. This morning, we are actually continuing in our series, as Mikey kind of reminded us, in Gentle and Lowly, where we've actually been looking at the character of Christ. We've looked at his compassion. We've looked at his humanity. We've looked at him as our gentle priest. And last week, we looked how he is our intercessor, as well as our advocate before the Father. And this week, we're going to jump ahead. We're now in chapter 18, and today we're actually looking at his yearning bowels. That one took a minute to sink in, didn't it? For those of you all that giggled and or wanted to laugh but chose not to, may that middle school boy that lives inside of you remain there forever because they bring such joy and interest to life. And for those of you that the yearning bowels may have brought up unfortunate thoughts of explosive bowels, I apologize on that front as well. And I hope that in this morning I can erase those visions from your head. And you can't blame me for today's topic. Nate holds that one firmly on his shoulders because he's the one that picked up the book and went through chapter by chapter and decided what he felt is what Grace needed to hear. So he's the one that chose that y'all needed to hear about yearning bowels today. But in actuality, if you dig into the chapter, what the chapter is about is about God's yearning love for us, about his tender and his compassionate heart that reaches in and grabs us in the depths of our sin and wants to pull us out. And as I read this and I continue to read over this, I have to admit, and I stand before you very transparent as one of the pastors and say, I struggle with this. And I struggle with what this says. I know it to be theologically the truth but I have moments when I look at it and say hmm there's a God that loves me down to the depths of his being to his core. He loves me that much and I struggle with And I ask sometimes, how is that truly possible? For those of you that know me, this next statement will not come as a shock, but I am a people pleaser by nature. And for as long as I can remember, I've sought the approval of others. It's just who I am. It is part of my wiring, I truly believe. If you go into all the personality tests and you look at all the things, like I'm a helper. I don't know all the numbers and letters. I just don't. But that's just who I am. That's how I'm wired. I also think environmentally there was an impact. My dad was in food retail. We moved a ton when I was a kid. I was in four different elementary schools before I hit fifth grade. So I spent a lot of time trying to fit in, trying to find new friends, trying not to be labeled as, you know, the new girl. That's not something I wanted to carry. I just wanted to fit in and be part of a group or like just a little cluster. The other thing is, is that I didn't in those elementary years have a foundation in God's love for me. I grew up with parents who were believers, but we were also a family that were Christers. For those of you that don't understand that terminology, we went to church on Christmas and Easter. That was my exposure to the church. Good or bad, again, that's just what it was. I also had a brother who played travel hockey, so we were always on the road. These were choices that my parents made, and I don't hold any of it against them by any means, but I think it helped to form who I am and how I continue to do. Because from childhood and even into adulthood, my world's been marked by a lot of striving. This striving to be accepted, this striving to prove myself, to somehow earn a place. And then after I became a Christian, that striving also fell into, I think, and shaped how I viewed God. I knew that I loved him. I knew I believed in who he is and who he says he was. I knew that what scripture said about him was 100% true, but I still doubted sometimes that he could love me the way that he said he did in scripture. Because y'all, I knew I'm messy, I'm stinky, I carry lots of baggage. I carry lots of shame, lots of regret for my past. And so for me to think about that kind of love hitting home for me is hard sometimes to wrap my head around. And so as I was continuing to prepare, Nate and I have met a few times. And again, this might be shocking to you all. He came to me a couple times and said, you have too many words. You need to parse it down just a little bit. But he challenged me to find one thing, just one thing that out of this chapter and out of what I've studied, that I would hope that you guys would walk away with. And so, Nate, I apologize ahead of time because in looking for my one thing, I may have veered off course from what we had talked about originally. So this is what we've got, though. But he challenged me to think about one thing for you all to walk out of here with today as we talk about God's love for us. And the thing that hit me somewhere in all of this was from John chapter 13, verses 34 and 35. And what that says is, a new commandment I give you, love one another as I have loved you, so you must love one another. And by this, everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another. Y'all, when I read that, when I went back to it and I read over it and I read over it again, and it hit me right in the face. How is it that we can love others if we don't believe that he loves us? He states in that commandment, he wants us to love others like he's loved us. But if I doubt or if I don't believe in the love that he's given me, how then in turn can I give that love out to others? And I think that's why our world today is starving. It's starving for the kind of love that Jesus offers to us. This love that's real. It's not a political correctness or tolerance. It's not a kind of love that is social niceties, but it's the kind of love that is rooted in stays, forgives, it heals. So when he says for us to love others the way he's loved us, he's not asking us to try to do better. I think what he's doing is he's inviting us to be transformed. Transformed by the love that he has for us first. Because see, we can't love others like Jesus until we trust that we're loved by Jesus. This is it. If you hear nothing else I say today, this is it. That we ourselves can't love like he asks us to love others until we trust that we're truly loved by him. And this love that he has for us and is asking us to give out to others, it's not a cautious love. It's not a distant love. But it's a love that is actually drawn into our need and our messy. Which that's the part that I think for a lot of us is scary, right? So when we're at those places down deep, and this is where I said before, I have messy, I have lots of background baggage, right? But that's the place that Jesus wants to meet us and dig in, in that place of sin and love us all the more. So in those places where we feel the most unworthy or the most unlovable, the most ashamed, he wants to meet us there. We have to learn how to wrap our heads around that. And I think that there's a lot of us in this room that may be like, yeah, well, he extends that to others around us. I've seen it. I've seen it. I've seen that love extended to other people, but he's not going to give that to me because, you know, not after what I've done, not after the fact that I have yelled at my children for the 10,000th time, not after I have attempted and yet failed one more time to quit alcohol or drugs or pornography. Or after I have had the abuse that I have in my past. He can't love me there. He can't. And so instead of resting in his love, what we do when we put up that wall that says he can't get into those down, dark, dirty places with us is we start striving to earn love in other places. We have somehow to prove to others around us that we're lovable, that we're worthy of the love that he has or that somebody else has. I'm lovable. If I just keep doing, if I keep striving, if I keep somehow, somebody's going to think that I'm worthy. But when we doubt, when we doubt, when we strive, it doesn't do us any good. And in actuality, it makes us poor lovers of the people around us. He calls us to love others the way that he's loved us. But if we're striving to get that love from other people and from other places, then we are in a place where we have no capacity to give love if we're always striving to try to grab it from something. And when we doubt that we're loved, we tend to withhold our love from those around us. Because you know what? It took me an awful lot to feel this little bit of love that I've got right now. I'm not ready to give that up. And so we hold on and we're not doing a good job in loving other people. And so when you look at how Christ loved, we go back to where he was when he gave this commandment. He's in the upper room. It's the night before he's to go to the cross. The night before he makes the sacrifice of his life where he takes on your sin, my sin, your neighbor's sin, past, present, and future. So that we can have a relationship with him and that we can in turn be with him forever. So it's the night before he's getting ready to do that for us. He's sitting in a room with his 12 best friends and he knows already that Judas is about to betray him. He knows that Peter will deny him and he knows that by the time that the sun rises, all of the disciples will have scattered. He knows that. And yet he makes a very conscious choice to kneel down and to wash their feet. Y'all, if that was me and my humanness, that would not have been my response. Think about it. I might've been angry. I could have been, you know, or like, like, just not going to talk about this. You're going to be hateful, ugly people to me here in about 12 hours. I'm done with you. But that's not how he chooses to respond. He chooses with love and action. He chooses to serve when it is the least deserved. And he chooses to move towards those who are failing him. He knows it. And that's what he does for us too, right? He moves towards us in those places where he knows we're going to fail him, where we're not doing what we feel or what we should be doing. And then he continues on and he says to them, as I have loved you, so you must love one another. So he's just knelt down. He's just given them that love that they didn't deserve, that love that met them in this place of complete and total failure. And he says, have to receive it before you can give it because love starts with receiving before it becomes doing. We get that backward all the time in our humanness. We get that backward all the time. When we're not anchored in his love for us, all we end up doing is making ourselves exhausted making ourselves defensive and disappointed I said before that I am a people pleaser and one of the things that people pleasers do so beautifully is they put others before themselves quite often to your detriment. Many of you guys know that my parents passed away within 17 months of each other, and sandwiched in between there, there was lots of running back and forth to Pinehurst, lots of hospital visits, lots of taking on responsibility and helping my dad and aunt. There was a whole litany of things that I could add in there. In there also, I was trying to be a good wife. I was trying to be a good mom. I was trying to be a good pastor here at Grace. And I can stand before you and tell you I failed miserably at all of that during that period of time. It wasn't pretty. I was short with my family. I know I let people here down. I let my coworkers down. It wasn't pretty. And I know it. And I was constantly running. I had my kids later admit to me that there were things that they didn't tell me during that time because they didn't want to add anything else to my plate. And as a mama, for those of the other mamas in the room, you know that just breaks your heart to think that they just can't come to you. I just was not a good human at that moment or during this time. And I can also admit to the fact that I would get phone calls periodically from my dad after my mom had passed. And I remember seeing his name pop up on the screen and literally just staring at the phone and in moments dreading answering it. I love my dad to my core, but I knew to answer it there would be questions and he was very needy at those moments and I didn't have anything left to give. I was done. I was exhausted. I did answer it, by the way. But still, in that moment, there was always that thought and that hesitation as I looked at the screen because I was like, oh, no. And the thing is, I neglected myself, and I realize now that we can't, you can't pour out what you haven't first received. I was working from an empty cup, a very empty shell, because I was running myself absolutely ragged. And this goes back to the fact that we can't love like Jesus if we don't trust that we're loved by Jesus. If I'm not filled up by Jesus because I trust that he loves me, I am not loving others well. And I think that there's a lot of us in the world like this today. And I think that this emptiness or this constant striving and this constant motion trying to earn something, trying to pour ourselves out from empty cups is why the world can feel like it does sometimes, where we're living in this place where we're quick to divide and quick to assume things and slow to forgive. And we see that often sliding into the church as well because the church is made up of a lot of humans, right? And it slides into the church as well. You don't need me to tell you that. You all have seen it at some point in time. All you have to do is look online. And it makes you sad. And I think back to what Jesus said about his disciples loving others. And I wonder to us too, if we classify our followers, ourselves as followers of Jesus, what would it be like if the people of Jesus were known not for being right or righteous or all the things you could add there, but for being rooted. Being so secure in his love that we freely give out our love to others. That we are so rooted in his love that we no longer compete, but we serve, that we're so rooted in his love that we no longer compare ourselves to others, but we celebrate each other, and that somehow when we're so rooted that we no longer condemn, but we just choose to forgive and to offer grace. Because I think then the world will start to take notice. And the world's going to recognize us as Jesus followers by our love for one another. Our love, this love that is so rooted deep inside of us, is meant to be living evidence of who he is. It's meant to be that living evidence to the rest of the world that he is real and he is love. Not our striving love, not our performing love. That's not the kind of love that we need here. What we need here is that secure love, the love that is flowing from a heart that is rooted and anchored in grace. And I know some of you all are now looking at me going, okay, that sounds really good. And you've not met my mother-in-law or my father-in-law or whoever it may be, my coworker, my brother, my sister, whoever it may be that says, and you're going, but loving like Jesus is going to be really hard in those circumstances. Yeah, it is because we're human and we run out of patience and we run out of kindness and we run out of, in a lot of cases, just run out of ourselves. But I go back to that commandment that he gave us. And I don't think he gave it to us to be impossible. I think he gave it to us as a reminder and an invitation to draw us back to him and to remind us that that same love that he gives and that same love that saved us is now going to be the love that empowers us to love others. And that that love and that grace that he met us with in the middle of our messy, stinky mess is now going to be the love and grace that helps us to meet others in their mess. It's an invitation and a reminder that even with those that are super hard to love, we can't work it up sometimes. We can't just walk into the situation going, I'm going to love them better today. I am. I'm going to love them better today. It doesn't always work that way because our ability to love doesn't come from some sort of willpower. I truly believe that it comes from being willing to be loved. I had the opportunity last week to hang out with some sorority sisters. We did this the year before. It's just a sweet time. We get to reconnect. This year, my old roommate got to join us, and I was so excited. I had not seen her in probably seven or eight years. And Shelly and I got to actually room together again on this trip, and we spent many nights just chatting and talking and catching up. And I asked her about her sister and how things were going. Shelly had a sister who about 15 years ago had a brain tumor, multiple surgeries, etc. Left her sister with basically some traumatic brain injury. She had short-term memory issues. Long-term memory was very much intact. Her physical ability is very much intact. So she could live somewhat independently. It was always nice just to have some people around to check on her. And about seven years ago, she moved up to be close to Shelly and her family. Lived a couple houses away, so very involved in her life, constantly looking after, checking in on her, and all the things. In 2022, her sister caught COVID, and because of her compromised health, landed her in the hospital for a great deal of time. It accelerated some of her decline. And because of that, she ended up in a rehab facility. And Shelly's comment in all of this to me was, I don't understand why it's her and it's not me. There was a lot of guilt in that respect. And, you know, we talked about it, and she's a believer as well. And I'm like, I don't have an answer for you on that one. There isn't an answer for why it's her and not you. And then she went on to say that one of the things recently that Amy has started to do is that every time they go to visit, Amy just looks at her and says, God has been so good to me. And it's at every visit. And Shelly looked at me and she said, I don't know how she can say that. After 15 years and all she's gone through and all the struggles and all the things, I don't know sometimes how she can say that. But this time I knew I could look at Shelly right in the face and go, I know exactly why she says that. Because of you. You are her personal representative of God's love. You who shows up and loves on her unconditionally. You who takes her out. You who does all the things for her and with her. To her, you represent God's love. So when she says, God has been so good to me, she can say it because of the way that you love her. And I hope, Grace, that we can be that to other people as well. Nate often states that we can't be the big C church, but we can be Grace. And we as individual people can impact, we can work on ourselves, we can impact our families, we can also then impact this body and the communities around us. And so when you think about Shelly and you think about her willingness to love so unconditionally the way she did. I think about us and myself. This is me talking to myself too. But what would it be like if we chose to believe the best about one another because we know that that's what love does? What would it be like if we showed up for people who were hurting? Even when we didn't want to because their hurting is hard. But we did it because we know that that's what Jesus would do. What would it look like if we were forgiving before it's earned? Because we know that that's what grace would do. And what would it be like if we had all the patience with those that are just new or learning? Because again, we know what grace and love would do. Because I think every act of love then becomes this small reflection of the greater love that we've received. Because we can only do that, however, when we're sure of his love for us. And when we're secure in his love, we stop striving to earn it and we start living to spread it. And so today, I don't believe in my being that this is an invitation for us to walk out these doors and try to love better. I don't think that that's what this is. I think what this is is an invitation to us to let ourselves be loved deeper. To receive his love for us. All that Aaron and the team sang about. How much he loves us. That's what we have to receive first. And when we truly trust that we're loved by him. Freely, fully, without any condition. That will be the moment that we will turn and love others like he loves us. So we can't love others like Jesus until we trust that we're loved by Jesus. And so what is it, Grace, that you guys can do this week as you walk out these doors to root yourself deeper in the love that he has for you today? And will y'all pray with me? Thank you. Thank you, Lord, that you love us. Thank you, Lord, that you give so freely of your love. We just ask that we are willing to receive that, that we put down ourselves, that we quit striving to earn our love from someplace else and quit striving to earn your love. But somehow, by staying rooted in you, that we learn how very deeply you love us. That down deep in our core and our soul, that you love us that down deep in our core and our soul that you love us that much and by doing so challenging us to then take that love and spread it to those around us thank you Lord for your love thank for your son. Well, good morning, everyone. My name is Nate. I get to be one of the pastors here. Thanks for making grace a part of your Sunday. If you're watching online, wherever you are, whatever you may be doing, thank you for doing that and joining us in this way. This morning, we continue in our series called Gentle and Lowly, where we're looking at the character of Christ. Is that Kyle and Ashlyn back there? They're here. Look, with the new baby. Hey, guys. We continue in our series called Gentle and Lowly. I was going to say that we have more books on the information table. We do not. So if you don't have a book and you still want one, first of all, that makes no sense to me because we've been talking about this for three, four weeks. But if you don't and you want one, reach out and we'll tell you where to find one. Okay. But in this series, we are looking at the character of Christ. We are marveling at and learning about and from who Jesus was. And the second chapter of the book points out that Jesus was characterized by his compassion. Jesus was a man of compassion. And that's where I want us to focus this morning. And I want to do it in such a way where we kind of build a case for the compassion of Christ, because I want you to see just how prevalent it was in his character. And to me, the most prevailing instance of his compassion is found in the shortest verse in the Bible. Many of you know what the shortest verse in the Bible is. You may not know its address, but this will not be unfamiliar to you. It's John 11, 35, and it simply says, Jesus wept. Now, I meant to do the research this week and forgot, but syllabically, from a standpoint of syllables, it is not the shortest verse in the Bible. There is one verse with three words that are all singularly, they have one syllable, and it's actually shorter technically speaking. But this we acknowledge as the shortest verse in the Bible, Jesus wept. Without the context of it, we might not know why that is profound, or we might not know why I find it to be the greatest example of Jesus's compassion. But here's why. Let me give you the context for it. Jesus, in his life, had what many theologians and scholars believe were some besties. He had his very good friends that were not the disciples, that were not a part of the 100 to 120 people that would travel around with them, with him and his disciples. But it was Mary and Martha and their brother Lazarus. These were, a lot of people presume, some of Jesus's best friends. It was kind of home base for him, and they lived in a city called Bethany. And this is, some scholars say, Jesus's favorite place on earth. These were his dear friends. I don't know if you're fortunate enough to have good dear friends, but when you're with close friends, you can be your complete, total, vulnerable self. That's what friendship is. And many people believe that that's what he had with Mary and Martha and Lazarus. And so one day, word comes to Jesus by way of Mary and Martha. He was two days away by foot. And they said, hey, Lazarus is dying. Can you come heal him? And Jesus said, yeah, I'll be there in a minute. It's a loose paraphrase. He waited two days, and then he began the journey. In the time of his journey, Lazarus passed away. So as he's approaching Bethany, they hear of his approaching, and Mary runs out to meet Jesus. And when she meets him, she asks the question that we would all ask. Why did you wait? You could have prevented this. My brother has died. What are you doing? Why didn't you come sooner? What was so important that you couldn't come do this for us? It's the question we would all ask. And that through history in different ways, we have asked at different times. And then after asking the question, Mary begins to weep. And Jesus' response to this question that makes sense to every generation was John 11, 35. Jesus wept. And here's where the profundity of this passage struck me for the first time. And I've told you guys about this before. You may remember this story. There's a pastor in California named Rick Warren who's been very successful, sold a lot of books, and his church does very well. And even amidst that success, his son at the age of 27 took his own life. And when he did, he stepped away and took a leave of absence for either six weeks or six months. I can't remember. And when he came back, he preached a series called How We Got Through What We Went Through. And I watched that first sermon back and he highlighted this verse. And he said, I'd love to understand why Jesus lets things like this happen. But he doesn't explain it to us because we're not capable of understanding it. And even if he did, it wouldn't take my hurt away. So what we have in Jesus is a Savior who doesn't offer us explanations. He offers us his presence and his hope, and he kneels and he weeps with us. And I found that to be an amazing point. And in this instance, when Lazarus dies, Mary weeps, and so does Jesus. But here's what makes this further compelling to me. Jesus knew the rest of the story. He wasn't wondering if he was going to go resurrect Lazarus, which he does. If you haven't read the story, I'm sorry, I just ruined it for you. But he goes and he resurrects Lazarus. He says, Lazarus, come forth. And he does. He comes out of his tomb and he resurrects him. When Jesus meets Mary on the road, Jesus wasn't wondering about what would happen. He knew that he was going to raise Lazarus. He knew that Mary and Martha would be overjoyed. He knew that he would have his friend back. He knew that. So listen to this. When he's weeping with Mary, he's not weeping because he is sad. He's weeping because he's moved with compassion and his friend is sad. That's the Jesus that we worship. He was so moved with compassion that because his not shed a man tear. The older I get, the more I cry. I cry so much that when I'm watching a show with my nine-year-old daughter Lily, and we're watching a kid's baking championship, and a kid has to leave once we get to the final four, she looks at me to see if I'm crying. And I am. I can't help it. We watch Hometown, which is a great show. I highly recommend it to everyone. Ben and Aaron are the best. We watch Hometown. When they do the home reveal and the people are thrilled at their home, do you know what I'm doing? I'm crying. But I'm not inconsolably crying. My nose isn't running. I've just got a couple man tears and I wiped them away. It's fine. And forget you if you judge me for that. I emit this salty liquid from my eyes and I'm moved by emotion. Those are not the tears Jesus was crying. He was weeping. His shoulders were heaving. His nose was running. He was a mess. And he was not a mess because he'd lost his friend Lazarus. He was hurting because Mary was hurting. And Martha was hurting. That's what compelled him. And I think that is remarkable about our Savior. To further my case about compassion being personified in Christ and him being a man of compassion, I have a litany of verses to go through. We're going to go very quickly, okay? But here's what we have. And me and Lynn, we worked on this before the sermon. We'll see how we do together. But here's the verses very quickly to show you the compassion of Christ. In Matthew chapter 9, what we see, when he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were harassed and helpless like sheep without a shepherd. In Matthew 14, when Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and he healed their sick. And Matthew chapter 15, Jesus called his disciples to him and he said, I have compassion for these people. They have already been with me for three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry. And Mark chapter 6, verse 34, when Jesus landed, he saw a large crowd and he had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd. In Mark chapter 8, I have compassion for these people. They have already been with me three days with nothing to eat. In Luke chapter 7, when the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, don't cry. There's more. Jesus at every turn was a man of compassion. And here's what strikes me about the compassion of Christ in those instances when he chose to heal and he chose to feed the 5,000 and he chose to spend time with one person. I think one of the more interesting questions about the life of Christ is, why did he not go around healing more people? If he had the capacity to heal and to make illness go away, why didn't you just teach them to wash their hands? Just basic science. Why didn't he go around healing more people? Why didn't he do it all day, every day? The only compelling answer to that question is because it's not what he came to do. What Jesus came to do was to live a perfect life, die a perfect death, and train young men and women to run the church that he was establishing. That's what he came to do. He came to live a perfect life, to die a perfect death on the cross for us, and to train people to run the kingdom that he was establishing with his ministry, which is what we call the church, which is where we sit now. That's what Jesus came to do, which means, and I know that this is a weird thing to say, especially for a pastor in this spot. It's not inconceivable to think about every miracle of healing as a distraction from his purpose. It's not altogether unfair to consider the feeding of the 5,000 a distraction from what he actually came to do. It's not unfair to think that the widow that he healed that was bleeding was a distraction from whatever his real mission was that day. And yet, being moved by compassion, he feeds the hungry. And yet, being moved by compassion, he heals the sick. And yet, being moved by compassion, he preaches to the masses. When we see Jesus perform these miracles, when we see him heal and we see him feed, I think it's fair to see those as times when he veered off the point of his ministry because he was so moved by compassion in his heart to help others, to serve others, to be distracted because his heart moved so much for the people around him in need. This was who Jesus was. If you don't yet believe that Jesus was a man of compassion, I would simply make this point. Jesus' dying words were words of compassion. We did a Good Friday service this last spring, and we focused on the seven things that Jesus said while he hung on the cross for you and for me. And one of the things that he said was, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. The men, putting a spear in his side, driving nails through his feet and hands, putting a crown of thorns on his head, whipping him, blindfolding him and saying, you're a prophet, tell us who hit you. He said about those people, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. His dying words were words of compassion. And so here's the truth about Jesus. And here's what I want us to understand about his character and seek to emulate in ours. Hurt people hurt Jesus. Hurt people hurt Jesus. When Jesus sees people hurting, he hurts. When Jesus sees people suffering, he suffers. He suffers so much that he weeps, even though he knows the end of the story. He hurts so badly that he allows himself to be distracted from his divine purpose to execute this one. Hurt people hurt Jesus. And so, we talk a lot here about what the word sanctification means. And sanctification, as we understand, is the process between when we're saved and when we're glorified. When we accept Christ as our Savior and when we exist with Him in eternity. It's life. And through life we go through the process of sanctification. And sanctification, the easiest way I've ever found to understand it is to become more like Christ in character. And so, as believers, and some of you here are not, and that's fine. But this is a peek inside the curtain. If you are here as a believer, what God wants for you is to become more like Christ in character. Not in nature, because that's not possible, but in our character as we go through the years. And hopefully those of us who have been believers for a long time are slowly moving to be more like Christ and for our heart to beat with his. But if our goal is to be more like Christ in character, then we cannot do that without being people of compassion. We cannot do that without being moved by the hurt of others. So much so that we don't simply go, oh, that stinks. I hate that for them. But that we are compelled to go and do. We cannot be like Christ in character if hurt people don't hurt us to such a degree that we are activated to some action in service of God's kingdom for people who are hurting. How can we possibly, church, claim to be Christ-like if we are not people who are moved by compassion? Not just empathy. Not just seeing the floods and hurting for the people affected by them, but actually buying supplies or driving them out there. And that's just one example. And I'm not telling anyone that you should do anything except allow yourself to be moved by compassion. And we have stories in grace that I'm very proud of, of people being moved by compassion and doing great things. So here's the question for you this morning. How might we employ our compassion? How might we employ and deploy our compassion? We all have the capacity to be stirred. How might we employ it? Here's one of the things I'll tell you. When we think about compassion and being so stirred by the hurt of others that like our Jesus, we serve them and we help them because we can't stand it anymore. Here's one thing I'll tell you, and I can't presume or project my life upon you, but let me tell you about my day-to-day, okay? And you'll see if you relate. I wake up every day. I was going to make a joke there. I'm not going to make it. I'm going to be disciplined. I wake up every day. Most days take a shower, unless I don't have any meetings. Then I dress in basketball shorts and Crocs. But most days I take a shower. And then I take Lily, my daughter, to her private school. And I'm in the carpool line with a bunch of other people taking their kids to their private school. And I can only say that the car line at NRCA is not a place that moves me towards compassion. I don't weep for the people that I see. I'm in my ensconced, nice, safe bubble, right? And then I drive to church. And I get in the office. And I have this glorious hour where no one else is in the office. And I have it to myself. And then I loathe the first person that shows up and ruins my solitude. Usually it's Kyle. He's been mercifully on paternity leave for three weeks. Sorry, Kyle, I love you. And then I sit in my office and I have calls and I have meetings and I and I go to lunch yeah three times a week with someone and then Jen Jen jokes with me must be nice it's a nice life this last week I played in a golf tournament and I went to lunch twice look at me and then I go home or I go to soccer practice with a bunch of kids that whose parents $650 to play that season. That doesn't move me towards compassion. And then I go home in my ensconced little area. And we have dinner, and we watch Hometown, and I cry and my daughter makes fun of me. And then we go about our day. And I wake up the next day and I do the same thing. Here's my point. There's not a lot of spaces in my life where I encounter people who engender compassion. If your life is like mine, then you have to make a choice to go outside of your comfort zone and encounter people who engender compassion in you. You will not, most likely, come upon them honestly. You will not experience compassion if you do not choose to expose yourself to those who deserve it most. So if we want to be people of compassion, and if you're sitting here going, that is who my Jesus was, and I recognize that's what I need to do, then we need to be people who expose ourselves to being able to be compassionate and stirred towards hurt for others. If in our life, if what I'm saying is true, hurt people hurt Jesus, and in our life we have elegantly navigated a path to never encounter genuinely hurt people, then how can we possibly be hurt by their hurt? So we have to choose to engage outside of our bubble so that we might be moved as Jesus was. A great example of this in our church, and I've told this story many times. I'm so proud of it. I'm so proud that they call Grace home, and they predate me. They allow me to continue to be their pastor. But Suzanne and Wes Ward, some of you know their story, some of you don't. Suzanne was in youth group here. She grew up at Grace. And at some point, gosh, it's got to be six, seven years ago, if not longer than that, she went on a mission trip to Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, with her friend Cindy. And she saw in Addis an orphan crisis where families literally can't afford to keep the children that they're having, and so they have to give them up for adoption, and those children end up in orphanages. And she saw with her own eyes that the young girls, 17 and 18, who age out of those orphanages, not educated, not eligible for college, have very few choices about what they can do in life. And most of them ended up in the kind of work that you're assuming right now. And they were moved with compassion. And so they started a ministry called Addis Jamari. We partner with them. They were moved with compassion for the plight they saw in the Ethiopian, so much so that they did something about it and they started a house. And it was a house for the girls who aged out of the orphanage to come and to live in, where they're taught life skills and they're discipled and they're taught about Jesus and they're launched out of there going to college or having the capacity to get a job so that they can avoid the life that they would have lived had not Addis Jamari stepped in. And then to further it, they realized, you know what, if we can get ahead of this on the front end, we can prevent orphans altogether. And so they started what they call the FEP, the Family Empowerment Program, where for, I think it's $80 a month, you can donate that to Addis Jamari. And those $80, listen to this, this is amazing, allow a family to keep their child at home rather than having to give them up for adoption. How simple is that? That's like, what, eight lattes? That's easy. Also, Starbucks is stupid, okay? Germaine to nothing, sorry. And so they started doing that. And now, instead of just a home with three or four girls occupying it post-orphanage, they have what amounts to a daycare with 80 children every day, with programs for moms to educate them, to feed them, to take care of their kids, with counselors, like degreed counselors to work with their children and with the moms and with the dads. Compassion drove them to do that. So that's a big one. I don't think all of you need to go start a ministry in Africa. Actually, you probably should. But that's not the point. That's a big step. And in life, sometimes God moves us to make big steps. And we get moved and it changes the trajectory of our life. Suzanne is one of my heroes. She does not yet take a paycheck from Addis Jamari. And she works tirelessly for them. Every day. All the time. Because she's moved by compassion and believes in this. And some of us, God wants us to take steps like that. Others, first time I went to Addis Jamari, was in January, was it 2020 that we went, Karen? I think it was. I think it was. January 2020. Yeah, Andrea was there too. And we went over and Suzanne told me a couple weeks before, she was like, hey, it's just you and a bunch of ladies. So maybe invite somebody. And I had to think of the retired people that I knew that might be able to go. And so I invited a buddy of mine, Emil Lasavita. And I was like, hey, come to this. He goes, what is it? And I was like, it doesn't matter. Just please come with me. And he did. But when he saw the ministry, he was so moved by compassion that he got involved too. And now he sits on the board. Now he serves. He and I had a conversation last week where he called me about the future of Addis Jamari, and we talked about it. He was moved by compassion, so he acted. We have people who have been going to Mexico for 20 plus years to build houses for people less fortunate. Because when they went down there for the first time, they were so moved by compassion that they go back every year. We have people who have been doing that for 20 plus years. My buddy Keith right here, who, trust me, I do not like saying nice things about. The stupid Steelers jersey in church and the whole deal. Keith went years ago and was so moved by compassion that he's been a grandfather to someone who's grown up in that ministry. He's sent baby pictures. He's sent wedding pictures. They reunite every year. He's watched him go from this kid volunteering to this man who's in charge of all the construction of the houses now. He's the project manager. What happened was Keith went on a trip that he didn't want to go on very much, but his heart was moved by compassion and it changed the course of his life. There's at least one good thing you've done, Keith. If we want to be like Christ, we have to allow ourselves to be moved by compassion for others. And if we're going to be moved by compassion, then we have to make choices to expose ourselves to something that can move us in that way. So where I want to finish this sermon this morning is to simply challenge you with this. What step can you take towards compassion? What step can you take to expose yourself to hurt people that might hurt you in such a way that you begin to take steps of compassion as a result of that? And maybe you're already doing it, and that's wonderful. Lean into those places. But if you're not experiencing that, and you're not serving anybody outside of your bubble, and you haven't been moved by compassion for a long time to help and to sacrifice. Maybe the next step is to just think about how can I expose myself to portions of our society or our world that will compel me to do that. So let's think about that this morning.

Well, good morning, everybody. My name is Nate. I get to be one of the pastors here. Thanks for making grace a part of your September Sunday. Happy kickoff day to those who are celebrating. If you're joining us online, wherever you are and whatever you may be doing, we are grateful for that. This morning is our own kickoff of sorts as we kick off our new series called Gentle and Lowly, titled for the book, Gentle and Lowly, that we still have available in the lobby. We're going to be going through that this fall together. And I have found that the church always thrives. There seems to be kind of a greater pulse. We kind of come alive a little bit when we all have a shared experience, when we're doing some of the same things together. And so this is an opportunity for that. It's how we kind of, you might not know this, but at Grace on staff, for me, as I think about the year, our ministry year starts in September, and then we sprint all the way to Memorial Day, and then we kind of, we have summer extreme, then we take a breath and then we get ready for September again. So I wanted to start our ministry year on the same page together, going through this book. This is a book that the staff has gone through. Kyle, our now family pastor, recommended it to us. We went through it as a staff. It was a very impactful book. We've had a small group go through it and they really loved it. And so I thought it would be good for the whole church to move through this book as well. Now in the book, there's something like 16 chapters or maybe more. And this series is only eight weeks. So clearly I'm not going to cover every chapter. I've chosen the ones that I feel are most relevant to grace, which is by the way, one of my favorite things about being a pastor of a small church is that I feel like we know each other and I know you. So when I go through a book like this, I can pick the chapters that will probably be most relevant to us, which is something that I take. I feel a great privilege in being able to do. But if you want the full experience, then you'll need to read it on your own as we move through. We will move through the chapters chronologically, but I will not hit each one. So I would encourage you to grab that book and be reading it this fall as we go through it. As we begin the series, I want to start with a little thought experiment, okay? And now this is going to require us to activate our calcified, recalcitrant imaginations, okay, that many of you have not used in a long time. I have a four-year-old son. I'm 44. I'm too old to have a four-year-old son, especially one as imaginative as he is. That kid will talk to you for 10 minutes straight, and 85% of it is complete nonsense, untethered to reality. He's got the most active imagination, and I'm bad at imaginative play. I would have been better at 24, but not much better. Okay. I haven't used my imagination since I was three. And then I, then I, then I cut that guy off. It was like, that's useless. That's not practical in the adult world. And I moved forward. Some of us are like that. We haven't imagined anything in a long time, but I want to ask you to dust it off and imagine this with me. okay? Let's pretend, and I know, I just said pretend and you guys are like, you lost me. Let's pretend together that you're going to go see a movie. And this movie you've seen from the trailers is about a creator, a deity that builds a world. And this world, the people or the beings that inhabit it, rebel against him, do not follow his rules, do not care about his presence. Most of them live lives that essentially ignore him. And they turn themselves from him. Now, I know that this is not difficult to know where I'm going. But I do want you to depict that world in your head. There is a deity. He is the main character of the movie. He creates a universe. And the center of that universe is a world. And the people, the things occupying that world are made in his image to glorify him. And yet they don't do that. They turn against him. They rebel against him. They do not care about him. And so to rectify this deity, to rectify this creation back to himself, he sends his son and says, go fix it. He sends his son to this creation and he says, I want you to go get these, get my beings, get my creations rectified back to me, facing me, serving me, and right relationship with me. Go fix what's broken. If you're imagining that with me, it's a movie that we're going to go see, and this character is sent down to creation to rectify creation back to the creator on behalf of the Father. Let me ask you this question. How would he have the right to describe himself? How would he have the right to describe himself? How would that character be able to describe himself? This character comes down, the son of the deity comes down. He says, I'm here to rectify this and to get you facing back towards God, back towards your creator. How would that character have a right to describe himself? Angry? Authoritative? Vindictive? Powerful? Just? He would have the right to be ticked, wouldn't he? He would have the right to bow up and say, you are humans, I am deity. I'm more important than you. I'm a bigger deal than you. If you don't listen to me, I'm going to get you right. Wouldn't he have every right to come down here, to be angry, to go down there, sorry, and be angry and be upset with the inhabitants and get right and say, you better cower in front of me because I'm not a problem that you want to have. And right now you do. If we imagine that movie and we imagine that character, I think it's very easy to imagine how that character might describe himself when asked. The parallel is very simple and very easy, and you guys spotted it as soon as I started the idea. But this is what Jesus does. This is the movie that we live in. God created us. He populated at the center of the universe. He populated this world with people that were made in his own image. And those people have rejected their God. And so God sends his son to rectify the situation and to turn creation back to him. He sends his son Jesus and says, go fix it. And then we ask, how would this person have the right to describe themselves? What would make sense? How would you describe yourself? How would you expect him to describe himself? And this, to me, is the arresting principle of the book Gentle and Lowly. Because according to the author, Dane Ortlund, there is but one place in Scripture where Jesus describes himself. There is but one place where Jesus gives a description of himself. In the Gospels, he's described many, many times, but it's always by his followers. It's always by the people around him. Jesus never goes on about himself. He never describes himself. He's very humble like that. But we have one place where he does. And this to me is the arresting principle of the book. What is the one place in scripture where Jesus describes himself and what does he say about himself given how he has the right to describe himself, which is any way that he wants, given what his attitude, what we would expect it to be if we were watching that movie. Given all of that, Jesus describes himself in one place. How does he do it? Matthew 11, 28 through 30. Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. This is the one way that our Savior describes himself. And I memorized this verse as a kid in the King's English. So to me, it's still, come to me all ye who are weary and heavy laden, for my yoke is easy and my burden is light. For I am gentle and lowly in heart. This is the one descriptor Jesus gives of himself. And it is profound in myriad ways. So this morning, I want us to sit in these words and reflect on what they mean with the goal of launching us into a series in which we will marvel at our unexpected Savior. That's where we want to end today. But where we begin is with the words of Christ when he describes himself. And the first thing he says is, Come to me, all ye who are weary and heavy laden. And as I thought about that, this occurred to me. We come to Jesus when we come to Jesus, we are exhausted. Have you ever thought about that? When we in our lives reach a place where we reach out for Christ, where we turn our countenance towards him, where we say, God, I need you. Jesus, I need you. Jesus, I welcome you. Jesus, I'm done with this. Whether it's for the first time, and maybe there's those of you in here who would not yet call yourself a Christian, but you're kicking the tires because spirituality seems important to you right now. And you're not quite sure, and you might not have all the answers, and you might not be totally on board with have all the answers and you might not be totally on board with this church thing and you might not be totally on board with this Bible thing, but you know that you need something. So here you sit in church curious about spirituality. And so maybe for the first time in your life you're considering reaching out to Jesus. Or maybe like most of us, you're here and you've had times in your life when you've reached to Jesus. You've had times in your life when you've forgotten. Times in your life when you held him at arm's reach. Times in your life when you allowed yourself to get too busy and you didn't prioritize him in your life. But something happens to bring you back to him. To cause you to reach out for him, to cause you to recognize your need for him and to be relieved by him. And do you know what we have in common, whether it's for the first time or for the 12th time, when we reach out to Jesus, do you know what's common about that that I think is remarkable? Every time you do it, you're tired. We reach to Jesus when we are exhausted. I've never known anyone who is crushing it. Their days are good. Their burden is light. Everything's going well. They're in cruise control. Their kids are awesome. Their marriage is happy. Business is good. Everything around me is great. That person doesn't tend to go, you know what I need? Jesus. That person just tends to love the goodness of life. But the people that I see in my life, again, whether it's for the first time or for the 12th time, who are reaching for Jesus, you know what they have in common? They're tired. Life feels heavy. It feels hard. There's this latent unhappiness or discontent that I can't seem to shake. Every now and again, we'll have a good day and we'll have a good smile and we'll have a good interaction and that feels nice. But then when we just kind of get back to ourselves, we just kind of shrink back in because we're exhausted and we're tired. And so I think, and I don't know this to be sure, I cannot interpret the intentions of Jesus himself, but it would make sense to me that Jesus says, come to me. When he invites people, come to me, all ye who are weary and heavy laden. Come to me, those who are exhausted, because I think it's possible that Jesus knows there's no other way that we go to him until we are exhausted, until we have worn ourselves out, forgetting about him and going about our lives however we want. And then there's an emptiness in that that causes us dissatisfaction. And eventually, in that exhaustion, Jesus in his goodness invites us to him. And so I think he says, come to me all you who are exhausted because that's the only way we go. Energized people don't run to him. They think they're fine. And so maybe simply today, if you have been crushing it and you have been cruising, maybe today we don't drop something on the ground and wait for it to break to start asking Jesus to pick up the pieces. Maybe today we go to him before we get tired. Maybe this fall, as we commit to this series, and we commit to going through this together as a church, maybe September isn't just the start of our ministry year here. Maybe it's a renewal of the fervency of your faith. Maybe you are tired. Maybe you are exhausted. Maybe it doesn't feel like summer was long enough, or if you have young kids, it feels like it was way too long. And maybe you are just catapulting into September and all the things and you're already tired. You need a vacation from your vacation. Let this, this verse, Jesus's invitation, be a lighthouse to us, beckoning us in to go to Jesus this fall, to reconnect with Jesus this fall, especially if we are tired, especially if we are burdened. Come to me, all ye who are weary and heavy laden. If that's you, let's go to Jesus this fall. If we're tired, let's turn to him. He beckons us. But he doesn't stop there. He follows it with this interesting statement. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light, which is an interesting, oh yeah, this is what that means, which is an interesting thought. It's an interesting verbal flourish, right? Come to me all ye who are weary and heavy laden for my yoke is easy and my burden is light. It's, we kind of get the connotation. We understand that a yoke, at least I hope you do, if this is new information to you, your school failed you at some point, but a yoke is the thing that goes across the back of the ox so that they can pull the plow or they can pull the cart or whatever it is. It's the thing that goes over the animals so that they can pull it and be used. So he says, my yoke is easy and my burden is light. And so we kind of understand that imagery on a visceral level already. But here's what you may not know about that word yoke and what it means. In Jesus's time and in the times in Israel prior to, rabbis were the teachers. And I'm not going to go through what it takes to become a rabbi, but there wasn't a lot of them. It was like making the NFL. And the rabbis, they were the religious teachers. They were the ones charged with teaching God's people about God's word. But there was differences in interpretation. And different rabbis would see things differently. One easy example of this is, it's said in scripture that you should remember the Sabbath and keep it holy. You were not to work on the Sabbath day, which for them was Friday night to Saturday night, those 24 hours. And some rabbis looked at that and interpreted very, very strictly and very piously. And they said, if you have sandals that use a nail to fasten the leather to the sole of the sandals, those sandals have metal in them, and you can't wear them because it's requiring more of your body to pick up your foot, and that counts as work. So you cannot wear those sandals on the Sabbath. And other rabbis went, that's absurd, wear whatever you want, right? Those would be our rabbis, right? Nobody in this room is like, I'm pro-nail guy. That's the one I want. There was disagreements. If your donkey falls in a ditch on the Sabbath, can you pull it out or do you have to leave it there until Monday? When you tithe, what do you tithe? When the laws contradict each other, do I lie and protect somebody or do I tell the truth and get them in trouble? When the laws contradict each other and you don't know which way to go, that's what the rabbis were for. And so they had, they each had a way of understanding all understanding and applying and teaching all of the rules and the law and the old Testament. And that way of understanding those things was called their yoke. So when you would follow a rabbi, you would take their yoke upon you and follow the rules their way, which is not very much different than our current day denominations. Some people think that we should sprinkle water on a head of a baby, and that's baptism. Some people think that baptism is you get maximum wet, and it's for professing believers. We have difference of opinion on that. So we started the Presbyterians and the Baptists, right? Methodists have different ways that they interpret things. Lutherans, Pentecostals, we have these different things. And so back to this point, and now we can put it back up there, Laura, yoke equals religion. Yoke equals religion. It's not just an image. It's not just a metaphor. It really does mean religion. Way of thinking about faith. Way of following the rules. Way of living up to the standards of God. And so Jesus says, and this is what makes it remarkable, come to me you who are exhausted for my yoke, my religion, my way of living out your faith is easy, and my burden is light. And here's the way he makes it easy. Jesus does not seek to encumber us with rules, but to liberate us with relationship. He does not seek to encumber us with rules, but to liberate us with relationship. He says, at one point in his ministry, somebody asked him, what's the greatest commandment? And he asked it back to them, what do you say it is? And the person answers, to love your Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind, amen, and to love your neighbor as yourself. And Jesus says, you have spoken wisely. On these hang the whole law and the prophets. And what Jesus meant in that statement is, if you'll simply love God and love others, you will capture all the Old Testament. You will live out the truth and the rules that are found in the Old Testament law. The 630 something rules that Moses brought down the mountain. If you will simply love God and love others, you will fulfill those things. And then he further simplifies it in the upper room discourse in John 14 through 17. We spent a spring there one time. They're, to me, the greatest collection of chapters in the Bible. It's God's, it's Jesus's final instructions to his disciples. And he says in John 14, this new command I give you, this new command I give you, do you know what it is? Go love others as I have loved you. He drops off the God part. And he says, this one command, you live by this one command, this one rule, this one thing encumbering the yoke. And that's what I'm asking you to do. And it might feel odd that he leaves off the God part, but what Jesus knows is there is no possible way for us to love others sacrificially unless Jesus himself is the one empowering and infusing that love. I cannot love you the way that I'm supposed to love you the way that Jesus loved you. I can't even sniff at it unless I am actively, adamantly, and ferociously loving God first. Then I can love you. That's why Jesus sums it up this way. And he does not encumber us with rules. Because rules are tricky anyways, aren't they? Think about one of the most basic rules. Honor your father and mother in the Lord for this is right. Great. What if your dad's a degenerate? What if he left the family? What if your mom's abusive? What does it look like then to honor them? What if they tell you to do things that are actively wrong? What does it look like to honor them? Maybe you have great parents. What does it look like to honor them when you're eight? And what does it look like to honor them when you're 48? That simple rule, honor your father and mother, gets tricky. And so you know what Jesus says? Let's not worry about the pedantics of that. Let's simply love others as I have loved you. How did he love? Sacrificially. He gave of himself. Always. Always patient. He was always gracious. He was always kind. And in this way, he forces us into relationships. This is why we say at Grace that we exist to connect people to Jesus and connect people to people. Because our faith necessarily presses us into relationship with Jesus and then into relationship with others as we are tasked with loving one another as Jesus loves us. So when he says, come to me if you're tired, my yoke is easy and my burden is light, it's not to encumber us with rules. It's not to encumber us with do's and don'ts. It's simply to love your neighbor. We can make a rule that you shouldn't flip somebody off in traffic when they cut you off. We could make that rule. We could write it down. We could agree to it. We could abide by it. We could probably find something in Scripture that would lend itself to this idea that hanging your finger out the window is probably not a great idea in traffic. We could do that rule. But doesn't just love of our neighbor dictate that we would never do that anyways? And in this love, doesn't it make the relationship more genuine? What if every Monday, Jen sent me an email, and she said, this is what I need you to do for me to feel loved this week. And it was just a to-do list. And that was the basis of our marriage. And I did the things, and by Thursday, I'm lovable. I did them all. We good? Yes. She gives me a big hug and a kiss. Yes. Great. Now, here's the thing that she and I both know. I wouldn't do it. I'd want to. I'd really be up for it. I kind of like that policy. That makes things a lot simpler, doesn't it? But that's not how relationships work. So that's not how our relationship with Jesus works. So if we're compelled to go to him, it's not a list of do's and don'ts. It's a relationship that we lean further into with him, and then we lean outward into others. And the love of Jesus is what makes those relationships possible and makes us able to love well. So I would say if we are tired and we're not loving others well, maybe it's because we haven't been fueled by Jesus in a long time, and we should again choose to go to him. Now, that sentence is hugely important for who to know who he's inviting and what he intends for us. Come to me, all ye who are weary and heavy laden, for my yoke is easy and my burden is light. We go to him for relief. But this is the part where he describes himself. And what's remarkable is he describes himself as gentle and lowly. But it's important to understand Jesus is required to be neither gentle nor lowly. Jesus is required to be neither gentle nor lowly. Do you understand that? He doesn't have to do that. If we go back to the movie and think about what that character might be who comes down from on high to rectify creation, what attitude might he be carrying with him? Again, how would he have the right to describe himself? And we don't actually have to imagine this very much. There's actually an example of this movie in scripture. If we keep turning the pages of Matthew, eventually we'll get to this parable that Jesus tells. And it's a picture of the Old Testament prophets and Israel's reaction to Christ. And he says there was this owner of the vineyard, and he rented it to some workers with the agreement that they would give him an allocated amount of the profits, of the goods goods they would take, they would take some of the harvest. He would take a big portion of the harvest. And so when harvest season came, he sent some representatives, the owner of the vineyard sent some representatives to the workers, three of them. And it said, okay, it's time for us to collect the owner's share of the harvest. And the workers killed one, beat one up and st stoned the other one, and sent the two back to tell the owner, get lost. And so the owner sends some more of his representatives, and they do the same thing. And they tell him to get lost. And so then the owner says, I'm going to send my son. Surely they will respect him and give me my profits. And then when his son shows up, they kill him. Because now we can claim the inheritance for ourselves. This is a picture of the prophets that God sent to the Hebrew people in the Old Testament. They rejected them and they stoned them and they beat them up. And then eventually sending Christ. But again, if you're the son going to these ungrateful workers, what would your attitude towards them be? How might you feel towards them? What might you want to say? I remember I was playing a pickup soccer game in South Africa one time. And my dad and I were playing together. And dad he dad was I think was playing in goal and somebody was coming approaching the goal we're playing indoors and they kicked the ball and they kicked it as hard as they could and it hit my dad right in the face and snapped his snapped him back and it was like point blank it's from like me to Tom and it's indoor and we're all having fun there's's no reason to kick the ball that hard. And when that ball hit my dad's face, I saw red. I like, and I, it couldn't be helped. As soon as play started again, I ran into that guy as hard as I could. And I took him out in front of all the kids and in front of the people that we took there. I was one of the leaders of the trip. He was one of the people that we were ministering to. He was one of the camp leads. I flew 10 days to minister to him out of the overflow of the goodness of my heart. And when that ball hit my dad's face, I didn't care who he was. And after I did it, I was like, well, that's probably not the best way to handle this. How might that son feel going to that vineyard to rectify those people back to his father? Angry, entitled, knowing that he could squash him like a bug if he wanted to. And yet, gentle and lowly in heart. And I don't do this often, but that Greek word heart that's used in the text means center of your person, essence of your being. It is who you are in character to your core. And our Savior, who has every right to be angry. Who has every right to chide us for our betrayal. Who has every right to squash us under his thumb. Who has every right to say, I am here and you better come to me for I am fierce and I am angry and I am powerful and you've got about three seconds to cower before I prove it. Instead, he says, I am gentle and lowly at my core. It is the essence of who I am. And that word gentle is so interesting. Have you ever experienced the gentle conviction of Christ? Have you ever experienced the gentleness of God and how he works to turn our hearts towards him? Where there's something in your life that you know doesn't need to be there. You know it's wrong. You know that attitude or that behavior or that pattern is unacceptable to God. You know that. And yet you persist. And God has every right to crack you over the head with a two-by-four, to come running at you and knock you over in the middle of a soccer field. He has every right to just sweep your legs out from under you and force you in your humiliation to see the errors of your ways and begin to walk right. Doesn't he? But he almost never does. Gently, humbly, graciously, he massages the areas of our life as he cradles us and offers us comfort and walks us humbly into a profound submission and conviction of our sins. Have you ever experienced the gentle conviction of Christ? Maybe you're experiencing it now, this morning, as you hear Jesus calling you back to him. And maybe it's not some big thing. Your life's not going to blow up. He's not going to hit you with a two-by-four, but maybe this morning he's gently urging you back towards him. Jesus describes himself as gentle, and I don't think that we often enough marvel at how profound and meaningful that is. Because he didn't have to. And then he said, he's lowly in heart. He's humble. And this morning, what I want us to understand is that to be lowly is to be accessible. To be lowly, the way that Jesus is talking about, is to be accessible. And now, imagine, let's go back to the movie. This deity comes down from on high to right the wrongs and to rectify us back to our creator. Do you think you're going to get a face-to-face with that person? Like, do you think you're going to get to talk to them? Who's going to talk to that person? Who's going to talk to that entity that comes down? World leaders? The Pope? Rich people? Let me tell you what I'm sure of. That person comes down tomorrow to rectify the world back to the Creator. He's not taking a meeting with any of you. Years ago, and I still kick myself to it because it was a complete waste of time. Years ago, I emailed a United States Senator. I'm not going to tell you which one, and I'm not going to tell you what about. But I emailed a Senator because there was something happening that concerned me, and I wanted to express it. And here's what I know happened. Some 23-year-old intern read it and went, this is dumb, and deleted it and never told a soul about it. I wrote an email to an unnamed intern is what I did. It was a complete waste of time. We understand accessibility. This person who comes down from heaven is not someone that is accessible to the likes of us, unless, he says, I am lowly and gentle. I am meek. I am accessible. And we learn that he is accessible through his Holy Spirit. And we learn that where two or more are gathered in his name, that Jesus is there also. Jesus' presence is with us now in this room today. He offers that to us. He makes himself accessible. So that when we pray, when I pray in a few minutes, if you pray with me, the Holy Spirit is uttering things too deep for words to God to tell him what I really mean through the heart of my prayers. And Jesus himself is sitting at the right hand of the Father as he offers us his presence and he is interjecting to the Father on our behalf. He is that accessible. So here's what I want us to do this fall. Here's what I want us to do with gentle and lowly. Let us this fall marvel together at this unexpected Savior. Let us just take these eight weeks and read through this book and learn more about who our Jesus is and let us collectively marvel together at this unexpected Savior who comes down and he says, are you tired? Then you're who I'm looking for. Are the rules hard? Let me invite you into relationship. And let me tell you about myself. I am gentle. I don't have to be. But I am gentle at my very core. I am accessible and lowly at my very core. I hold on to none of the rights and privileges that you might impugn upon me. I am the most unexpected of saviors. And so this fall, what I want us to do is marvel at him together. Let's pray. Father, thank you for this morning. Thank you for who you are. Thank you for your son and how he loves us, how he shows up for us. Jesus, thank you for being gentle when so often that gentleness is not what we deserve. Thank you for being humble and lowly and accessible that we might come to you. Thank you for being an unexpected Savior. Father, thank you for sending him to us. Jesus, thank you for leaving us with your spirit. I pray that we would together marvel at you, Jesus, and who you are, and that we would be more desirous of you with each week that goes by and that for those of us who are tired that we would use this morning as a reminder to run to you and seek rest. Jesus, it's in your name that we ask these things as you advocate for us to the Father. Amen.
