Thank you. Well, good morning. Welcome to Grace. My name is Nate. I get to be one of the pastors here. Before I launch into the sermon, just point of clarity, when Mikey was doing the announcements earlier, there was some pictures of Grace Serves, and there was one picture that one of our elders, the esteemed Doug Bergeson, was in. And in that picture, he appeared to be just leaning up against his rake and resting. And I would love to tell you that that was not typical for the morning, but it was. After that, he was sitting, and that was it for the whole morning. So anyways, we're launching into this new series called Traits of Grace. And this is a series that has been a year in the making, and it's one that I've been very excited to share with you. So I thought that it would be helpful for you to understand how we came about this series and how we arrived at a need for the series and a need for the traits of grace and what they even are so that as we go through them each week for the next five weeks, you'll have an appreciation of where this comes from. So a year ago in our staff meetings, we have staff meetings on Tuesday afternoons, and this is when we talk about things like this. A year ago in our staff meetings, I kind of brought to the staff that I wanted to start doing some more liturgical elements in the church service, which if that's a church word that you're not familiar with, that's kind of from high church, from old school church that's fancy and proper and has an order of service that they go through. There's reading. Sometimes you stand and read. Sometimes there's prepared benedictions. But some of those elements can be really good and really helpful and really encouraging. And some of you come from backgrounds with those liturgical elements. And so we wanted to try to serve everyone in the church and bring those into our service. But as we were talking about what elements to add and what to do, I think it was Kyle made the point that, you know, we really can't just start adding things to Sunday morning services willy-nilly. We really need to know, like, what is the goal of a Sunday morning service? How do we determine if it's good? Is it when people sing loud and the sermon ends on time and people seem to get five or more compliments in the lobby? Is that what a good service means? I heard a snicker over here. I get compliments sometimes. Like, what denotes a good service? And so we started talking about that. What's important to us? What do we want to do? What is the goal of a Sunday morning service? And as we started having discussions about what the goal of a Sunday morning service was, we realized we really can't adequately talk about that until we understand who we are as a church. So what defines us as a church? What are we trying to do as a body of believers? What makes grace, grace? And then let's work backwards to that. And then let's work back into what we should include in our services. And so as I enjoy doing, I pulled out the whiteboard in multiple colors and so that it can all be color coordinated and clear for me up there. I pulled out the whiteboard and I said, that it can all be color-coordinated and clear for me up there. I pulled out the whiteboard, and I said, okay, and this is over the course of several weeks. I said, okay, what makes Grace Grace? Who are we? Like, just throw out things, our traits, our characteristics. And I started to throw them up on the whiteboard, and we got them up there, and there was some that were true but maybe not as true or maybe not us or whatever it is. And there was some that's like, well, those three kind of seem similar. I think we could combine those into one. And after talking about it for a couple of weeks, we arrived at these five traits. And we said, these things we feel as a staff are the things that make grace, grace. It's what we feel we are as a church. So as I put these in front of you, as we put these in front of you, this is not a new direction for grace to go in. These are not new directives for us to walk in. These are putting words around things and around values and around passions that I hope you all share. And this just gives us common language for them. So this is a process by which we are defining the church and who we are. And before I could just come out with it and say, these are the new five traits of grace, I had to take these to the elders because the staff doesn't decide who grace is. I don't decide who grace is. Our elders do. So I typed these out and I presented them to the elders and I told them the process that we went through. And I said, what do you guys think? Do you want to add to or take away? Do we want to tweak some descriptions? What do we, what do you think of this? And the elders were actually excited about it. I was a little bit surprised. I thought they'd be like, all right, great. You know, run with your traits, buddy. But they were, they were actually a little bit animated by it, so animated that they put it in my yearly goals. At the end of my work year, I'm going to get assessed, and when I do, part of the assessment is how well did we begin to integrate these traits into the culture of the church. So my goal is that all the partners of grace would know these five traits, at least like two or three of them, okay? Just like we all know that our mission as a church is to connect people to Jesus and connect people to people, we want us to start understanding these traits and to start understanding this common language. So much so that when we build a new building, which I'm going to talk about at the end of the service today, when we do that, because that looks like that's what we're going to be doing, we're going to put these in the lobby in some decorative way so that we can see them and be reminded of them and who we are and what makes us us. And I kind of think about it like this. I think it's important for us to have these traits and for us to know what they are because I think it helps us stay focused as a church on what we do. And I think that this is important because I'm not going to belabor the story. This story is not the point of the sermon, but there's this great story in the Old Testament, the book of Nehemiah. A man named Nehemiah, he's a captive of a Persian king and he is higher up in his kingdom and he hears that his home city of Jerusalem has been laid to waste and that the walls are no longer standing. And he begs the king for the opportunity to go back to Jerusalem and rebuild the walls. And the king gives him that permission. So he goes back to Jerusalem. He gets a lay of the land for a little while. And then to rebuild the walls, he looks at the families that live in Jerusalem. And he says, okay, you guys, you build the wall from here to here. And then you guys, y'all build it from there to there. And then you build it from the gate to that post. And he assigned portions of the wall to all the families of Jerusalem. And every family had their portion that they built. And I think it's a great picture of what the church is. That in church, we all have our portions of the wall that we're supposed to build. Your family's assigned to these things. Your family's assigned to these ministries and those tasks. But I also think that that's a really good picture of how God builds his kingdom in the cities, how God builds his kingdom in communities. I personally believe that there's plenty of great churches that you could be at this morning. There's plenty of churches that you could be at with good worship, with likely better preaching, with better looking people. I mean, the whole gamut. You could go out and you could find other churches and they would be good churches. I would never argue to you that Grace Raleigh is the one church nailing it in the city. We're just doing great. And everybody else is apostate and they need to get on our level. Like that's ridiculous. There's Catholic mass happening right now where Jesus is being honored. There's other Baptist churches, Presbyterian churches, Methodist churches all over where Jesus is being honored and that's good. And so I think that God designed and gives a DNA to churches and assigns them portions of the wall to build in his communities. And I think that there's a portion of the wall in Raleigh that's been assigned to Grace Raleigh. And there's a portion that's been assigned to Summit. And there's a portion that's been assigned to Providence. And go on down the list, we all have the portion of the wall that we're supposed to build. And so as a church, as we think about it, these traits are how we build our part of the wall. This is what we do. This is what we focus on. This is not a statement of faith. This is not a statement of what we believe. That's on our website. That's a different thing. This is believing that Jesus is the son of God and that he came to save us and that we love him with all of our heart. What should we do in light of that belief? These things. So the first trait that I would talk with you about, it's what all the songs are about. You ought to be able to guess it by now, is partners of grace are kingdom builders. Partners of grace are kingdom builders. Now, these traits define us as a church holistically, but they also should define what a partner at grace does. I've actually shifted in our Discover Grace class that we do for people who are coming here and are newer to the church. We spend more time on the five traits than on the old boring stuff we used to focus on. So if you came in previous years and it was boring, come again, maybe it's better. But partners of grace are kingdom builders. This is based on a principle that I've shared with you before. And I would say, if parts of this sermon sound familiar to you, they should. I preached a very similar message to this back in January when I talked about what it meant to be all in at grace in our Consumed series. It was the one that I had to come in and film early, so I was actually wearing a hat for the sermon for the first time in my life. And then a couple of years ago in the spring, we went through the book of John, and when we got to the story of John the Baptist, I talked about this, about building kingdoms. So if this sounds familiar to you, it should, if you're a partner of grace. If you're not yet a partner of grace, this is a great series for you to go, for you to know good and well what you're getting yourself into. But when I say that partners of grace are kingdom builders, the idea behind this is every one of us, every one of us to one degree or another is building a kingdom. Every one of you is building a kingdom. It could be your kingdom. It could be God's kingdom. You could be a real sucker and it's someone else's kingdom. You don't even get any of that. But every one of us is, we spend our lives building kingdoms. We go through adolescence. We grow up. We're told somewhere around college age that we've got to make a way for ourselves. We get a degree or we learn a trade and we jump right into it and we just start building our kingdom, right? I had an old pastor that would use the phrase, the American dream is to get all you can, can all you get, and sit on your can. That's what we do, man. We're just building our kingdom. Look at all my stuff I got. Look at my, I'm the king of my quarter acre lot, right? And now some of us have big dreams and build huge kingdoms. Bezos has got himself a big old kingdom. But compared to God's, it's a little baby kingdom. We build our kingdoms too, and sometimes we have big dreams, and we want to build big kingdoms, and we got big goals, and they include multiple vacation houses all over the world. And sometimes we have smaller goals, and our kingdom is our family, and that's what we pour our lives into. But I want to turn, I want to open our eyes to the idea that every single one of us invests our life building a kingdom. And so the question becomes, whose kingdom are you building? And to answer that question, we define kingdom builders like this. A kingdom builder is one who realizes that all the talents, gifts, abilities, and resources they have were given to them by God for the purposes of building his kingdom, not their own. I know it's a longer note than we normally put up there, but I wanted to be very clear. A kingdom builder, someone who's not building their kingdom, someone who's building God's kingdom, is one who realizes that all of the talents, gifts, abilities, charisma, resources, finances, everything that I've been given or the tools that I use to acquire the things that I have are not mine. I am a steward of those things. And God gave them to me to build his kingdom, not my own kingdom. Many, many, many, if not a vast majority of us in church and outside of church go through life believing that all the talents that we have and all the abilities that we have and all the ways that we can find to build relationships, power, money, whatever it is that we're after, that we just came by those by hard work or luck or some combination of the two and that we're supposed to employ those for our benefit. But to be a Christian, to be a believer, to be a child of God is to understand, no, no, he didn't give you those things to build your kingdom. He gave you those things to be a part of building his, which is a much more thrilling invitation than building our paltry kingdom that will all fade. They all will. I remember when this clicked for me for the first time. I was about 28 years old, and I was taking kids to summer camp. And I had always been marginally athletic growing up, all right? And that's not false humility. I really was. I was good enough. I was marginally athletic, although I don't think I really need to claim that. No one's looking at me going, I don't believe you, man. You were apex predator out there on that soccer field. Yeah, all right. So we're all on the same page here. And I don't, I mean, I don't know if you know this, but you are looking at a member of the 1998 Georgia Association of Christian Schools All-State Soccer Team. So, yeah, I know. I know. I don't want to intimidate people, so I don't bring it up a lot. There was like four schools in that association. I really thrive in low-bar situations. It's been a theme of my life. But I was marginally athletic. I was athletic enough that I could get in just about any game, any sport, and jump in and participate and not embarrass myself and sometimes do well and usually not get picked last. And so that served me well in high school and college and particularly growing up in my culture in the, where you, as a dude, your worth was your ability to play sports. And so I had that ability, and I could jump in. Clearly, I'm no longer in a position where that attribute is relevant. So that is atrophied greatly. I'm not a marginal athlete anymore, but I used to be. And I remember I was going to summer camp, taking these kids, and I had just been hired by this church. It was a larger church with a youth group of about 200, 225. And I was hired as the middle school pastor. And when we went, we had a high school pastor who was a friend of mine. But I knew that when we got back, they were going to fire him, which was an uncomfortable week. But I also knew that these high school kids are really close with him, and they're going to be bummed when we get back from intense relationship building camp. And then they have to say goodbye to their buddy, and they're not going to understand why. So I knew that I needed to create relationships, bridges with these high school guys as quickly as I could, because I was going to need to be there for some conversations when we got back home, but they didn't know that. So I'm racking my brain, how do I even get these guys to talk to me? They don't care about me. I'm the middle school pastor. They don't care about the new guy. They have their relationships. But every day during free time, they'd go down to the ball courts. And so I would too. And we'd roll the basketball out on the court, and I'd get to playing with them, and I'd spend two hours every day playing basketball with these guys. Building rapport, making jokes, and whatever, whatever. And it built a bridge for me so that when we got back and everything hit the fan, I was able to lean on some relationships that I had begun building. And that's when it dawned on me, oh my goodness, God did not give me marginal athletic talent so that I could get people to like me in high school. He gave it to me because he knew that I would spend 15 years of my life in youth ministry and that it is an essential and crucial part of building necessary relationships with the people around you. And I thought, oh, getting to be on the All-State soccer team in 1998 was a happy byproduct to what God really cared about, which was putting me on the courts with those guys in 2010 so that I could build some rapport with them as their pastor. That's the first time it really clicked with me that everything I've been given has been given to me to build his kingdom, not my own kingdom. And that it is so easy to get caught in the pattern of putting our head down and building our own kingdom without remembering regularly that we are to be stewards of the gifts and abilities and the resources that we have. And Jesus actually preached this in the Sermon on the Mount. He addressed this. He talked about it like this. that we can build here on earth. And how eventually, no matter how big we build them, they will fade. The moth and rust will destroy. They will be corroded away. And what we build will not matter. Rather than investing your life in something that ultimately doesn't matter at all, invest your only finite resource in eternal things, in God's kingdom, and things that will matter for eternity. That's the invitation that God gives the Christian. I think it's one of the greatest apologetics for the Christian faith. Where else in this world, where else in our lives can we be imbued with purpose that great as to wake up every day and have the opportunity to build something that will last forever? And yet that's the invitation that God gives us, to be kingdom builders. So how do we build kingdoms? What does that look like? I hope by now you're asking that question. Yeah, Nate, I get it. We're supposed to leverage our gifts and abilities to build God's kingdom. But what does it mean to build God's kingdom? I think this is how we build God's kingdom. We build God's kingdom by adding and strengthening souls. Supposed to be a souls there. Sorry. I must've been moving fast when I put in the slides. We build God's kingdom by adding and strengthening souls. And here's how I know that's true. Because this is what Jesus told us to do. The very last instruction he gave the disciples. He's trained them for three years. He's died. He's resurrected. He's heading back up to heaven to be our high priest and to leave the Holy Spirit with us to guide us as we go. And he gives them final instructions. What does he tell them? Go into all the world and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. He says, go, build my kingdom. I'm giving you the keys. You're the only pastors the world has. Now go and tell everybody what you saw for the last three years. Go and make disciples. And because Jesus says go and make disciples and not simply go and make converts, that I know that Jesus wants us to build the kingdom not only by adding souls to the kingdom, by sharing our faith and seeing people come to faith and seeing people trust in Jesus. And again, just so I can be clear, what it means to be a Christian, as I understand it, is to believe that Jesus was who he says he was. He's the Savior and Son of God. He did what he said he did. He died. He conquered death. He rose on the third day. And he's going to do what he says he's going to do, which is to come back and make all the wrong things right and the sad things untrue. You believe those things about Jesus Christ, you're a believer. But it's not enough to just bring someone to the point where they believe those things and we so add them to the kingdom and make the kingdom grow in number. We are commissioned to strengthen those souls that are converted. That's why Jesus says, go and make disciples. So not only do we build the kingdom by sharing our faith and adding people, adding numbers to the kingdom, but we build the kingdom by walking with one another, by helping one another deepen our faith and grow in our spiritual life and become more vulnerable with one another as we share this journey together. We add to the kingdom. We strengthen the kingdom by discipling one another. And that's one of our traits. That's step-takers. We're going to talk about that one. But if you're asking, how do I build the kingdom? You build it by adding and strengthening souls. And so our job is to set about with our lives doing that the best way we can. And I think when I think of people who are building God's kingdom, I can think of so many people at Grace who are kingdom builders, inside and outside of Grace. I think of a man that I deeply respect who's a business owner. And within his business, he has the opportunity to develop leaders. And he sends those leaders out and they start their own businesses. But they grow up within his culture. And his culture is founded on Christian principles and Christian values. And the people that he leads are almost always believers and creating work environments where people are treated rightly and justly and fairly and they're loved. And all the people under the umbrella of his business are people who are loved well and led well. And then he develops people within that and sends them out so that they love and they develop well. Adding and strengthening souls to the kingdom by simply doing. Everybody from the outside would look at him and say, well, he's doing his job. But what he knows is his job is boring. What's fun is developing leaders and sending them out and watching them replicate these cultures. That's what my life is for. I think about Lynn Lemons, who's been given a gift of organization and been given a heart for missions. And she uses that as the chair of our missions committee, who, I don't know if you know this, decides what happens with 10% of our budget and how we partner with ministry partners outside of the walls of grace, using gifts and abilities that she's been given to add to and to strengthen God's kingdom. I think of Phil Leverett. Y'all probably don't know that Phil is our head usher, which is, I hate to say it publicly because it always goes to his head, but he is. He's our head usher. And he shows up early almost every Sunday. And he makes sure everything's in line. If stuff needs to be on the seats, he'll double check that. He'll make sure everyone's scheduled. He's just faithfully devoted to doing that, to building God's kingdom, strengthening souls, adding to the kingdom by making everything in the church work. I think of Debbie Bergeson, who sits in the COVID baby room and just holds a screaming child once or twice a month, just completely nonplussed, shuts the door, just sits there, the kid screams, and mom and dad just hold on for dear life, hoping they can get an hour to themselves and enjoy church and enjoy one another. Just silently, thanklessly doing that week in and week out. I think of some of the moms we have in the church who are devoted to homeschooling. And they get together and they teach their children. And they build them up and they make disciples and they form them and that is their ministry and that is how they build the kingdom. I think of somebody who had an opportunity to become an elder, and he said, not right now. It's not my season to lead the church in that way. We're so busy with all of our schedules. I need to focus on my children and be the husband and the father that I need to be. And he's going and building God's kingdom that way. But I happen to believe that all of us are given gifts and abilities and talents that God intends for us to use to build his kingdom. And I believe that not only because I've seen it, but because it's in the Bible. It's in the verse that Tamara read to us during the worship this morning. Ephesians 2.10, I don't know when or how I stumbled upon that verse, but it was in the early years of me at Grace, 2017, 2018. I was just reading my Bible, and the all-star verses in Ephesians chapter 2 are the two that precede it and talk about salvation. It is by grace that we are saved through faith, that not of ourselves, that it is a gift of God, so that no man may boast. And you always read those, and you're like, yeah, and you highlight those, and those are the important ones. But this one right after it, for the Christian, who understands the doctrine of salvation, we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, that God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. You know what that verse tells us? Whether you believe it or not, God created each one of you with a design for good works that you would walk in, that he's laid out for you with the sincere hope and with the will and with the desire that as you move through your life and as you move through your faith, your eyes would be opened to what those good works are and that you would walk in them. I believe that this is true of every human that's ever lived, that God has created them and imbued them with certain gifts for a purpose so that they might deploy those to build his kingdom. I think of my uncle, Uncle Deg. Those are his initials, but everybody knows him as Deg. If you knew him in the 80s, you knew him as Flash, so that's the kind of dude he was. There was Camaros and motorcycles involved. Deg is a militant atheist. It breaks my heart. But when he was growing up in the 70s, he went to a hyper conservative independent Baptist church that just ruined his faith. And I don't really blame him for walking away from that God, because I would have too. And I'm grateful that my mom didn't introduce me to that God that she met when she was growing up. But Deg, Deg can tell a story, man. That guy can own a room. He can take over a dinner party. And people follow Deg. People listen to him. And he's smart. And I just know he would have been a great pastor. I just know it. I'd love to go to his church. I think when God formed him in my grandmother's womb, that that's what he purposed him for. But Degg's just lived a life and he hasn't been able to have his eyes open to see his good works. And so he doesn't walk in them. But if you're at grace, let's have our eyes open to that. Each one of us, no matter how talentless, talentless, or insignificant, or unimportant we might feel, your God doesn't think that of you. We don't think that of you. We think that Ephesians 2.10 is true. And that when God formed you in your mother's womb, that he laid out for you good works that you should walk in until the day that he takes you back up to heaven to be with him. Because we believe that, and because we believe, and this is so important, and I'm so glad, Aaron, that you referred to this in your prayer earlier today. When you are walking in God's purpose for your life, when you are walking in obedience, when you are walking in the good works that God has prepared for you, there is no greater happiness or peace. To walk outside of those, to build our own kingdom, to refuse to walk in the good works that God laid out for us, that's where life feels disjointed. That's where we feel out of whack. That's where we beat our heads against the wall trying to find a sense of purpose. But when we walk in the good works that Jesus laid out for us before time, there's no greater peace or joy than being exactly who God created you to be. Parents, while we're here, do you know what you're raising? Kingdom builders. You're raising humans that God formed, knowing the good works that they should walk in. And it is your primary job as a parent to help them love Jesus and be able to identify the good works in which they are called to walk. That's what a successful parent is. Parents of adults, you get to help coach them through it. But because that's what we believe, because at Grace we are kingdom builders and we believe that everybody has a portion of that kingdom to build, I want to leave you with these two questions. I want you, honestly, I want you to think about these, talk about these with your spouse or with your small group people or with some friends at the church. And I would really love it, small group leaders, if we could spend a portion of our small group time this week in our groups talking about these two questions. Not all the time, but just give folks who heard the sermon a chance to respond to these a little bit. Five, ten minutes. Here's the two questions I want you to go thinking about this week. Whose kingdom are you building? And what is my good work? Whose kingdom am I building? Am I building my kingdom or am I building God's? Have I rallied all the resources in my life to make my name great or am I doing it to make God's name great? And then what are my good works? What can I walk in right now? If you don't know, ask somebody who loves you and knows you. But everybody has them. And we all should walk in them. I hope you'll go and you'll think about those things. Whose kingdom am I building? With the time I have here, whose kingdom do I want to build? And what is the good work that God has prepared me to walk in. Let me pray. Father, we thank you for who you are and for how much you love us. God, I just pray particularly right now for folks in the room who just really might not know. Maybe their heart position is, God, I want to serve you. I want to do what you want me to do. I want to build your kingdom, but I don't know what. Lord, would you please show them? Would you have someone who loves them speak into their lives and in their hearts this week? Would you show them the good works that they could walk in, that they might experience your joy as they do it? Father, if there are those of us here this morning who have had our heads down building our own kingdoms, would you convict us of that? Would you show us that in ourselves? Would you help all of us be people who are zealous to build your eternal kingdom? And God, as we do this, I pray for courage and I pray for strength and I pray for the peace and joy that comes with taking the steps of obedience and faith as we begin to live out the purpose that you've given us. In Jesus' name, amen.

I wonder, pals, how long has it been since we heard those stories? I bet it's been a while. And if we could tell them again, I wonder if we would find out that those stories aren't really kids' stories at all, but they were meant for grown-ups all along, and that there's still lessons we can learn from them today. Let's find out together. Speedy delivery. For me? Thanks mailman Kyle. This week, it's getting hot in here, the story of the fiery furnace. All right, nice. Good morning everyone. My name is Kyle. I'm the student pastor here. You can see me in films such as that video you just watched, most notably. But I am so excited this morning to be continuing in our series, Kid Stories for Grownups. In the next two weeks, we're going to be in Daniel, and we are going to tell two of the great kid stories of our faith. You know, I see a lot of people who grew up in church. These are stories you probably know back and forward, not only because you grew up listening to them, but you probably grew up telling them to your own kids as well. These are fun ones. As I was reading through here and as I'm prepping, I feel like I'm prepping myself to give a message that's basically just like a series download or like an episode download of VeggieTales. These are two of the great VeggieTales films, episodes of all time. But this morning, we find ourselves talking about the fiery furnace. But before we actually dive into the fiery furnace, well, before we actually dive into the story of the fiery furnace, I feel like it's important to have a little context, a little background of what is going on and how these men have found themselves being thrown into a fiery furnace. And so we open up in Daniel. We're going to be reading a decent amount in Daniel. So if you would be interested in opening that up, I actually am using this Bible, so I can tell you that you can find that on 873. And it's going to be on the screen as well, but like we're going to be reading a decent amount, and I would love for us to be able to open up our scripture together. But we find some background and some context that we need at the very beginning of Daniel chapter 1, verses 1 through 2. It says, That gives us some background because we see this nation, Judah, which is a part of Israel, and they are being taken away from Israel and brought to Babylon. They are becoming exiles to Babylon. Now, the reason for this, we find had a covenant with his people. The people of Israel, if you will serve me and love me and worship me as the one and only true God, and if you will live up to the Ten Commandments that I've given you, the laws that I've given you,. And they turned against him. They began worshiping themselves or worshiping other gods or other idols. They began to seek after self-satisfaction instead of the satisfaction of the Lord. The kings became power hungry and wanted them to be the most powerful as opposed to seeking the guidance of God, who they would have to argue is somebody more powerful than them, and they didn't want to deal with that. And so now we find ourselves at this moment where the Lord has allowed these people, Babylon, an enemy of Judah, to come and to take over this nation. Now, when we jump in here, we see that there's kind of, when we look at Daniel, there's kind of a decent summary that I can give you of Daniel, and it's this. One, God is in control. And two, Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego have complete faith and trust in that truth. We see it from the very beginning. God's people are being taken over, but they're only being taken over because the Lord is allowing it to happen. And so they begin to bring people. So what happens is, because King Nebuchadnezzar is a smart king, as they take these people over, what he doesn't want to happen is, hey, we have now taken you over. And so now you are like our servants, or now you guys living in exile are now enemies of us. He doesn't want to take over nations and have an entire nation of people hating him, and so he starts to try to work on his cultural appropriation. And so what does he do? He reaches out and he says, hey, will you bring to me from the nation of Judah, people in the royal family, people of nobility, of high birth, will you bring to me some of these men so that I can start bringing them in to my council? Maybe putting them in my armies or putting them as wise men in my council in different places and in different areas in different ways like that, which is a smart move, right? And you guys will never guess what four men were part of the group that they invited to come up. Yeah, right? Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. I know it's crazy, but just bear with me. And so they get brought in, but the problem is that even though they were welcomed in as friends, they were welcomed in upon conditions because ultimately the goal is, let me build these people up. If they're going to be in my armies, they need to be well-fed and they need to be of right stature to be able to be in an army. And along with that, I'm going to teach them our ways. I'm going to teach them our culture so that they can dive into it and they can be a part of our culture. It sounds great, except for there are different cultural things that are against what Daniel and his friends think are true and accurate and right with the God. One of those is the food that they were being asked to eat and the wine that they were being asked to drink. They found that if they were to partake in those things, that it would defile both them and their God. And so they go to a guard, a servant who's bringing them the stuff and says, hey, here's the deal. We feel like we're defiling ourselves and we're kind of like making a mockery of God or whatever it is. By doing this, do you mind if you just gave us water and vegetables? That's all we want, and then we'll be good to go. And so it says, once again, the Lord is in control. We've talked about this. The Lord softened the heart of the man that they asked and allowed him to hear them out. And so he's like, yeah, but like, here's the problem with that. If you do that and then you don't build up and if you don't grow up to the stature that all of the rest of these men grow up to, then not only are you in trouble and probably going to get killed for doing the wrong thing, but so will I, because I gave you the wrong nutrients that didn't allow you to grow. But Daniel and his friends, they stand together and they say, if you give us 10 days, I promise you, our God is good and he's going to deliver. He's going to allow us to be in the same stature. And he was right. At the end of those 10 days, when they took stock of, hey, what do all of these men look like? Here are these four men that looked most ready and most nourished by what they had eaten. The Lord had provided for them. they were given the name Shadrach, Meshael, and Azariah. Background, those are the three names of the men that they were given. But when they moved to Babylon, they were given the names Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. So we'll go back to that. So they entered the king's service. In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them 10 times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom. Daniel remained there until the first year of King Cyrus. They chose to serve God because they knew that, and they had faith that the Lord would pull through. And so here they are. Now they're brought in, and they are a part of the council of the king. Now they are within the king's inner circle, which should mean that they're set now. They're good to go. They are separated now from harm's way. But there's two problems with that thinking. The first is that King Nebuchadnezzar is like pretty unhinged. He's a pretty unhinged guy. He flies off the handle pretty quickly, gets pretty angry. And two, once again, they still find themselves within a culture that is polytheistic, that though they're totally fine with, hey, you guys are welcome to pray and serve and love your God, as long as you pray and serve and love these other gods. It's too narrow-minded of you to think that the God that you serve is the one true and only God. Well, that presents some issues. So we then go into chapter two. And in chapter two, what we see is Nebuchadnezzar has this dream. This dream is very troubling for him. He's very, he's upset. He's figuring it out. And so he goes to his wise men, the wise men closest to him. And he says, here's the deal. I need you to tell me what my dream means. But, but here's the kicker. I need you also, because how do I know you're not just making up, how do I know you're not just making up your own interpretation as opposed to the correct interpretation? The only way I'm going to actually trust that you're telling me the right thing is if beforehand you also tell me what my dream was. So not only do I want to know what my dream meant, but you have to tell me what I dreamed. And if not, I'm going to get angry. Well, the men naturally say, King Nebuchadnezzar, that is literally impossible. There is no way for us to tell you what you want. Sure, if you want to tell me your dream, I've got wisdom for you. I've got wisdom for days, but we don't have this. Well, the king, as we previously discussed, becomes unhinged. He becomes so angry at the fact that these people are acting like they can't tell him. He's like, okay, fine. It's time to clean house, find some new people. So he says, okay, all of the wise men that are here, all of my wise men in my council, I'm making a decree. I'm going to kill you all. You're all meant to be put to death. Well, Daniel hears this. It upsets him. But he goes and he says, can I have some time with the king for tomorrow? Whatever. And after he does so, he goes back. He goes back to his home. He finds Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. And he urges them, he says, guys, right here, right now, we have to come together and we need to pray and just beg God for God's grace and God's mercy that he will show and reveal to them this dream so that they might be saved. Faced with a problem and his solution is, let go, find my friends, sit together, pray and praise God, and hopefully the Lord will reveal. And the Lord does. The Lord reveals the dream. They respond by praising God for his goodness, and then he goes and he talks to King Nebuchadnezzar, and he makes it very clear to the king. He says, no man, no man could ever do this, but the Lord, our God, has revealed the dream. Back story of the dream, basically the point of the dream is God has put Nebuchadnezzar in charge for now. God's in control, but right now he's allowed Nebuchadnezzar to be in control of this place. At some point that will end, and at some point the Lord will take back over. But the Lord will take over Nebuchadnezzar's reign and for the Lord's people. But nonetheless, Nebuchadnezzar is through the moon. He instantly falls to the ground. He falls at the feet of Daniel and basically just starts praising Daniel's God. Your God must be the God of gods. It must be the king of kings. And he just begins to worship and finally begins to understand how great Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego's God is. And that is where we come to chapter three. And that is where we finally get to turn to and talk about the story of the fiery furnace. This isn't the first time that these three men, the story that a lot of us know so well, this isn't the first time they are standing up for their lives or standing up for their faith, even if it means their life. This is now going to be the third time that they get to do so. So it's been a few years, and certainly the king now understands that their god is one of the gods, but he doesn't quite understand yet that he's not, he doesn't quite understand that he's the one true god, and the only god. And so a few years pass, and as these men have been elevated, Daniel is now separated from Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. And so this story just includes the three. And what happens in this story is the king goes, and he basically has this giant golden statue idol made, and he puts it down. It's, let me make sure that I've got the name of the area correct. Oh yes, the plain of Dura in Babylon. The reason why I wanted to make sure of that is that's the same place that years before they had tried to build the Tower of Babel, trying to put themselves on a level playing field with God. And so here they are back in the same exact area, creating this giant idol to serve and to bow down to. And the decree is, hey, when all of the music, you can worship whatever God you want to, but when all of this music starts playing, you must fall down and you must praise and you must worship this idol that I have placed in the center of this town. Well, I think you can probably imagine what Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego did with that, and that was absolutely nothing. The kicker was, a part of that decree was not simply, hey, you have to do this, but if you don't do it, we're going to throw you into the fiery furnace. He said the title. They didn't care though. They went about their business. They served and they loved and they praised their one God. Well, some of the other people in the council of Nebuchadnezzar were not too thrilled about that. So they go to Nebuchadnezzar. they say, hey, the three Jewish men that you have in your wise council, not only are they not falling down and praising this golden idol that you've given us, so whatever, they don't pray to any of your gods. None of your gods they pray or praise to. And Nebuchadnezzar gives way to his being unhinged and gets furious. But as he calls them in, he reels it back in a little bit, and he offers them this. If you'll just pray to this idol the next time that the instruments play, if you'll now begin to praise and pray to these other gods, I'll let you walk. And almost in a way of cutting them off, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego respond this way in Daniel 3, 16 through 18. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, O king. But even if he does not, we want you to know, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up. We have full faith and assurance that God is strong enough to deliver us from this. But we also have full faith and assurance that even if he doesn't, we're still going to only serve him because our God is not the God of right now. Our God is the God of eternity, and that's all that matters. So you can give us whatever deal you want to. We're not going to abide by it because our God is the only God. And so Nebuchadnezzar, as you can imagine, was very cool and understanding. He was furious. It says that he ordered the flames to be elevated to seven times as hot, like I guess the flames to elevate to his level of anger, which I think is funny because if you're burning people alive, then like, it seems like fire would be fire, but whatever, he decides to do that. So here we are. What's a few extra degrees, but you know, he wanted it, so they did it. And that's where we come to the rest of the story. That's where we get to close out. And I would love for us to be able to read the rest of the story together. And shouted, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out, come here. So Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego came out of the fire, and the satraps, prefects, governors, and royal advisors crowded around them. They saw that the fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair on their heads singed. Their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them. Then Nebuchadnezzar said, Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego be cut into pieces and their houses to be turned into piles of rubble, for no other god can save in this way. Then the king promoted Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to the province of Babylon. That's good stuff. That is an incredible story. So far, we're three chapters in. You feel like it holds up to the bill that I delivered of a summation of Daniel is the Lord is in control. And that Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego have complete and utter faith in the fact that the Lord is in control. Every step, every moment, every discussion, all orchestrated by God to reveal his glory, not only to his own people, but to these other people, to show himself to these people who don't know him. And that's worthy of praise, man. It's worthy of praise, and it's worthy of excitement to say this God who's completely in control throughout these stories is the same God who is completely in control right now over every one of our stories. It's why we come and we stand and we sing and we raise our hands talking about the goodness of God, that all of my life you've been faithful, all of my life you have been so, so good to me, and I know that you will continue to be so, and I know that forever I have you because I've given my heart to you. That is worthy of an amen. That is worthy of praise. That is worthy of excitement. But that second part of the summary sometimes becomes hard for me. I look and I go, you know, I have an easier time putting my feet in the shoes of some of our other people in this series. I see myself more, and I can take more, I feel like, from the stories of Thomas and Peter when they doubted, but then in their doubt, the Lord pursues after them and shows them great love and grace in their doubt and still continues to use them in spite of it. I feel much more connected to the story of Jonah that Aaron Winston talked to us two weeks ago about, or last week about. Someone who loves God, certainly, and has a complete faith in God, but sometimes his selfishness got in the way, and sometimes his fear got in the way of what he knew the Lord wanted him to do. But in spite of those things, the Lord still works through him, works through his heart and he allows his glory to be revealed through a man who has a faith that isn't perfect, I feel more comfortable there. I see myself in the fear and in the doubt, in the selfishness. And I feel uplifted that in those things, the Lord still uses me. But man, to continue to look in the face of danger and evil and death and to unwaveringly say yes to Christ and to stand in faith and to stand in the glory of God and no other, it feels too big and too much. It feels like this story is one where I go, that was so nice. I love that so much. How good is God? Amen. Now let me go back to my broken faith. Good for them for being heroes. That's not me. And so as I'm thinking through this, then the question, the impossible question that I'm asking myself and presenting to myself is, okay, so then how do you attain an unattainable faith? This feels completely unattainable for me and for most humans. And as I continued reading and as I continued to dive in and dig in, what I realized is, ultimately, the product of these men's great faith was huge and feels unattainable. But when we leave here and we come back to here, when we come and look at the root of these men's faith, and we look at the characteristics of what drives these men to have such great faith, I think we begin to see roots that are far more attainable than what we see on the surface. The first one that I see is that these are men that compare their circumstances not to their own power, but to God's. If that sounds familiar to you, it means you've been keeping up. That was Nate's point when he talked about David and Goliath. This tiny, young, teenage kid looks at this nine-foot giant or however big and says, who does this guy think he is? He's disrespecting our God, and God will not stand for this. And so while an entire army looks and says, there's no way we can fight this man because there's no way I'm strong enough to do this, this kid doesn't look at the circumstance that he's in and say, I can't fight this. He looks and says, God can fight this. This is what these men do. They say, God is in control of all this. God wants his glory to be revealed. If it was left up to them and if it was left up to their power, there's nothing. But left up to God's, never any doubt. We can be people who are reminded that it's not about our power, it's about God's power. The second one I see is they have their ark. This is a little insider language, but Aaron Gibson, when he preached on Joshua fighting the battle of Jericho, he talked about that these people were asked to do something that seemed pretty insane. Instead of trying to take hammers and all this stuff to these walls that they're trying to take down so that they can fight Jericho, God says, I'm going to take care of the wall. I need you seven days to walk around this wall. They're going seven days, and it doesn't talk about on day three, wow, look at all the bricks who have fallen already. Wall is standing up tight. Doesn't feel like anything's moving. Why would they continue to go? Well, because when they look back, they see that they have the Ark of the Covenant. The Ark of the Covenant holds the Ten Commandments and it holds these different treasures of their faith that are reminders to them that God provided for us then, and God was good then, and so therefore now, even though I don't quite see him, and even though I don't quite understand why he's asked me to do what he's asked me to do, I know that he'll provide for me again, and I know that he is still good because he was good then. And ultimately, like they say, they say, but even if he doesn't, even if he doesn't save me, what they ultimately know is the Lord is good for eternity. And they can get on board with that. But the problem becomes, once again, we're still left at a place where if you're telling me these things, then I'm saying, yes, I agree with both of those. But I think a lot of us have this. We know. We know the Lord is in control. We know that he is stronger than we are, and we know he's been good in the past. So why is it, Kyle, why is it that I still can't stand? Why do I still choose myself over my faith? Why do I still not do this? Well, that is where I come to a third characteristic that I see that I think kind of drives the point home a little bit better, not only for these people, but for us. And that's that they grow and that they stand in their faith together. I think a lot of times we find ourselves feeling the same way that Paul does. When he writes in Romans 7.15, bear with me here because this is a lot of, there's a lot of do's in here, so just bear with me. I do not understand what I do. Amen, right? For what I do, or excuse me know full well what is good and what is right to do, but then when it comes to actually doing it, we do something else? I mean, I know that is for me. The last time I was consistent in working out and lifting weights and stuff was ninth grade. I know full well how important that is and how valuable it is to be healthy, to eat healthy, to work out, all that stuff. But ninth grade was the last season I played a football. And when the weightlifting coaches are football coaches and the other people in the weightlifting class are football players, everyone is pushing each other because ultimately you are going to that same goal because we are best if you are at your best. And so I'm going to make sure you do what you need to do. You're going to make sure I do what I need to do. And the coaches are going to make sure that it all gets done. But then when I was away from that team, when I wasn't on football team anymore, then it kind of was up to me. Do I want to continue doing this? Do I want to continue this hard work and this hard grind? I know I should. It'll be best for me. It'll be best for all of the things. But when it's left up to me and I feel like it's up to my own devices, a lot of times it just doesn't happen. I mean, gosh, even in my relationship with Ashlyn, man, like, I see the way that she, like, the way that she values health. I see the way that she values loving and caring for people. I see the way that she values building up and encouraging people, random encouragements to friends, friends that are close, friends that are far away, valuing getting on the phone with friends that I have fallen far from connected to, even though I love them so much. All of these things I know to be true and good and right. I should love people. I should serve people. I should be more connected to the people around me and the people that I love that are not currently around me. But man, until I had somebody that I could see doing it with me, it was a lot harder to do it. And until I had somebody who encouraged me in those things and in those ways, I had a hard time figuring it out. And look at how these guys handle all of this. They come together, and together they stand and say, we're not eating these things. We're only going to eat these things. Daniel finds out about this, and instantly he goes to his friends, and he says, guys, we need to sit together in a circle right now, and together we have to pray to God. These three guys say, we're not going to serve this God, even if it means we're getting thrown into the furnace. And if we are going to be thrown into the furnace, we're going to be thrown in together. They stand on top of what they believe in, and they stand together, which gives them the power to do so. It is very hard, I would say nearly impossible so you don't need to find it, but will you just read it with me as you see it on the screen? Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess for he who promises faithful. What is he saying there? Let us hold without, like unswervingly. Let us never veer away from loving God and holding to our faith. How? How are we going to be able to do that unswervingly? That's why we have 24 through 25. And let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another all the more as you see the day approaching. We spur one another on towards our love, towards the good deeds that we do in our faith. We don't give up meeting together, but we encourage one another. We uplift one another. In here on Sunday mornings, we stand and we praise together. In small groups, we're vulnerable. We talk, we discuss, we sit down in prayer with our brothers and sisters in Christ. We encourage, we love, we hold accountable. That is how we grow, and that is how we build up this type of faith. Because ultimately, our goal is this, to have a faith like Martin Luther discussed when he says, Because of it, you freely, willingly, and joyfully do good to everyone, serve everyone, suffer all kinds of things, love, and praise God. It's not just about looking death in the face. It's about looking every single person you see in the face and showing them love and serving them however you possibly can. That's our goal. And how we accomplish it is together. Let's pray. Lord, I'm so thankful that you have your hand on us and you are completely in control. Lord, I pray that I consistently remember that and that we consistently remember that. But God, I pray that as we try to build and maintain our faith, Lord, and as it gets hard, allow us to realize and remember that we have each other. God, I thank you for giving us such a beautiful and wonderful community as you've given us in grace. God, I pray that we are a people who love and meet together and serve each other, uplift and encourage one another so that we can do your will to the fullest effect. Lord, we love you so much. Amen.

All right, good morning. You guys can have a seat. My name is Nate. I get to be one of the pastors here. Thank you for being here on this holiday weekend. As I always like to remind people who come on holiday weekend, God does love you more than the ones who are not here right now. He loves you less at the beach. It's just how it goes. So thank you so much for being here to celebrate Ministry Partner Weekend with us. This is a really special Sunday for us. We like to remind you as often as we can that 10% of everything that's given here at Grace goes to ministries going on outside the walls of Grace. And so the way that we are structured is we support three international partners and three local partners. And you're going to get to hear from most of those this morning through video or from them being up on stage. Speaking of people being up on stage, we're going to hear from Addis Jamari. Towards the end of the service, I get to talk with Suzanne Ward, who helped to start that. And we get to find out more about that ministry. But I'm also really excited this morning to have David Rodriguez with us from Faith Ministry. I got to meet, you'll have a chance to cheer. David's not that big of a deal, all right? Just messing around, David. Love you, pal. I got to meet David in October of 2017. I had started here as the senior pastor, and that was the trip that we do in our church. And so we went to Mexico, and I felt like I needed to go to Mexico because missions are important to me as well. I just wanted to see what all the fuss was about. And as soon as I met David, I thought, man, Grace would love this guy. Grace needs to see this guy. Grace needs to hear his heart for missions and what's going on down in Reynosa. And so I've been wanting to find a time to get him up here, and finally it's the time. So he's going to share with us a little bit about God's heart for the world, and then I'm going to have a chance to talk with him on our behalf to find out more about faith ministry and what's going on down there. Buenos dias. Puedo hacer esto en español, verdad? Todos hablan español. I was going to ask Nate to translate this for me. I feel more comfortable speaking in Spanish. I know you are an expert, but I'm going to give you a break today, my friend. So thank you so much. It's so good to be here, guys, with you. It's amazing. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity. And you know my name is David Rodriguez, and I'm Executive Director of Faith Ministry, whatever that means. I have no idea what that means, but I'm the Executive Director of Faith Ministry. And as I was walking here, I just saw those beautiful familiar faces, and thank you so much for coming and doing this with us. And I was talking with some of the youth that used to come to faith ministry years and years ago as students in high school, and now they're grown up and married and with kids and all of that, and that did not make me feel old at all. So thank you for doing that, but it's just a beautiful, beautiful time. I think the last time I was here at Grace, it was 2015 or something, something like that. I don't remember. Don't trust me on that, but it was a different world right then, 2015, a reckless world when they put in front of us a birthday cake and we blew on the candles and then we gave the cake away. What were we thinking? Gosh. But it was a different world right there, but it was just great to be here with us. And they asked me to share a little bit about God's heart for missions and for partnerships. And I know for a fact that it runs really deep in the DNA of church, right? Missions and programs and all of this. And I know for sure it's important for this church. I was hired in 2002 to work with faith ministry. And by the summer of 2003, I was introduced to Grace Youth, right? With 50 or 40 or 80 kids coming. and I wanted to run away right there. But I was introduced to the beautiful leadership of this church with everyone that you know from years and years ago, and I can see how much love you have for the communities. I can see how much you put into the ministry and how much you love everyone. And every time that the team came to the area, it was a fiesta, not only for the ministry right there, not only for us, for the whole town. You know, everyone got really excited about that, and it was just wonderful, wonderful to have. And then I was introduced to the adults, right, that they're a little crazier than the kids, so, but beautiful adults, and every time they come, I have tons and tons of people coming to the ministry, because they want to take pictures with you guys, and they call you family, and they call you my friends, and they call you, and they feel that you you belong to them and they belong to you. And it's just a wonderful, wonderful feeling about that. And that's how much you appreciate the partnership and we appreciate the partnership with the ministry. That's the fiesta, that's family. And that's how God sees us without putting ourselves first and our minds and our cultures and our languages and our ideas and all of that. We put it on the side and we say, you're my brother and you're my sister. Regardless of everything, we are family because we belong to Jesus. And that's it. That's the important part. That's the heart of God working through all of us. God loves us so much. That beats me because I know me, right? It's how come God loves me? I have no idea. I don't know about you and yourself, but you guys look beautiful and it looks like you behave very well. But God loves you so much. And that's the important thing, that we can give back that love because of what we receive. That's the responsibility that we have. We are, God is counting on you, by the way. God is counting on me to go out and to share that love. If you're expecting an angel that came from heaven, you know, to do the work that we are supposed to do, I have news for you. It's not coming. The closest thing that you're going to have to an angel is Nate here and me. Let me tell you, you are in troubles right there, right now, right? You look like an angel, by the way. I'll send you the invoice later. You are in troubles. There's not going to be fire from heaven in showing people the love of God. God is depending on you. God is depending on me to get involved in organizations like this, to go out and to share that love of God with the people that is in need. I witnessed firsthand the love that you guys have and how comfortable you are, how good you are in that field. But let me tell you something, this world is an expert on throwing things at us that make us, you know, discourage us from going. You name it, COVID or financial crisis, or you put the name there that discourage you to go out in the field and do this. And when I was growing up, I learned this the hard way because my dad was a principal, a director of a ministry at Bible College. And that's what they did all the time, going out and doing mission work and going in different fashions. And one of those fashions was singing. He had a choir, a group of people singing, and I thought that was fun. He's like, let me do it. You got old, good old David thinking that that was beautiful, and I wanted to join that team, go all over the place and sing and all that. I didn't count that my father was a perfectionist, and he wanted to deliver quality. So they were practicing and practicing for hours and hours because he wanted the harmonies. He wanted the first voice to match with the second voice. And then it was all of that. And it seems like he wanted me to join one of those voices. And I was singing not on first voice or second voice. I was singing on reverse because he was always speaking on me. So I became uncomfortable with that. I became like, this is not fun. I don't want to do this anymore. And I talked to him about that. It's like, I don't feel good about this. I don't want to do this anymore. And he looked at me. It's like, do you really thought that this was going to be fun? Do you really thought that this was going to be something easy? You think it's about your feelings? You think it's about you, how you feel, how comfortable you feel, how happy you feel about that. Let me tell you something. It's not about you. It's not about how you feel. It's about the responsibility that we have to share that love of God with the people that have never seen the love of God. So put your feelings on the side. We have work to do. And I keep on trying to sing. I keep on trying because this world makes and produces problems. And we know this wonderful God. this loving God that we need to share with the community. In Romans 5, 8, it speaks loud about this. God demonstrated His love while we were sinners. Christ died for us. And I keep thinking, how fun that was for the Lord. How easy that was for the Lord. And that's the question. How good He felt about dying on a cross for you and for me. I guess it was not fun. It was not comfortable. It was not easy. But He did it for you. And He did it for me. He loved us so much. He loved us so deep that He died for you and he died for me. He cleaned me. He saved me. He put me in a place that I don't deserve, but he deserves and he's in me. And now I have a big responsibility to go out there. God cares for me. God cares for the people. Let's go out. Let's get involved. Let's go out and tell the people from Raleigh, from people from Mexico, people from Africa, from people from all the way in the world that we have an awesome God. That God cares. That God loves us so much. And they need to hear this good news. There's plenty of bad news. Just turn on your TV. They don't need that anymore. They need to know about this God that you have. And that you can share those great news with everyone. Thank you for this opportunity. Thank you. It's so good to see you here tonight. I mean, today, tonight, tomorrow, yesterday. I don't know. David, I'm so excited that you committed to me on the way to church this morning that you'd come back and preach to us for the next two, three weeks. We're looking forward to your series on missions. You got it. People are not going to be happy in Mexico, let me tell you. Thanks so much for sharing that with us. I'd ask David just to share a little bit really about the heart of God and why God cares deeply about the ministries that we're focused on this morning. And thank you so much for doing that. A simple message of it is our job. God's counting on us to spread his love. And David's actively doing that with his staff down there. The folks that we've highlighted on video are actively spreading the love of God. We at Grace do everything that we can to actively spread the love of God. Suze is going to talk about that in a little bit. And so now what I want us to get a kind of a sense of is faith ministry and what they do and what David's role is there and moving forward what we're looking forward to next. And then ultimately, how can we partner with them in moving God's love forward and spreading the love of God to other people? And so really, if you're here this morning, what I would really encourage you to do, or if you're catching up online, I would encourage you to think through, God, how can I partner with one of these ministries? How can I do something? How can I help spread your love in a way that I'm not currently engaged in? What's the thing that I can engage in and help with? So just allow the Holy Spirit to kind of speak with you as we hear more from these folks that we partner with. So David, first of all, I got to hand it to you, pal. When I told you, you know, take about 10 minutes and share, I didn't think there was any chance in the world that was coming in under 10 minutes. I thought for sure we were going to be 15, 18 minutes. I'm just going to be sitting there and be like, well, I'm just going to interview him for two minutes. That's it. That's his time. So I'm, first of all, very impressed. Thank you. So tell us what Faith Ministry does. And let's pretend that there's people here who have never heard of Faith Ministry before and don't know what it is. Educate us on what you guys do and where you do it. Well, I thought you say 10 Mexican minutes. I was going to go for 20, right? But I said maybe, Jimen, you know, 10 minutes, actually 10 minutes. You did good. I appreciate that. Well, Faith Ministry is an organization that creates opportunities, opportunities to meet the Lord, to meet Jesus in different fashions, different ways. What we have is people that they leave their hometowns. They leave South Mexico. South Mexico has nothing for it is extreme poverty that is over there. It's beautiful areas, but it has nothing for them. They move into big cities like Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterey. But you need education to succeed. And Monterey is my hometown. It's four million people. So it's an industrial capital of Mexico. So it's hard for them to do it. So they come to the border, not because the border is beautiful. It's because they want to jump in the United States, right? It's the American dream. And they get stuck in the middle. They cannot come here. They cannot go back home. So they're stuck with nothing, nothing at all, with no hope, no things like that. And that's, I'm sorry, my phone, it's saying that he didn't understand what I say. So it's listening somehow. So, beats me. Your phone is mocking you from the audience. I know, right? That's great. It's throwing jokes. I didn't understand that. Can you repeat that? Okay. And that's what we do. We meet these people where they are, and we tell them that we have an awesome God. But it's hard to tell somebody that has no house and no food and no medical attention, and they cannot send their kids to school, that God loves you, right? And you go and say, God loves you. Jesus loves you so much. And they look at you like, really? You're making a mistake. I have never seen the love of God in my life. And that's why we begin doing things and we've been building houses and providing meals. We have three churches that we support and we provide meals for 150 people a month. And we create all these opportunities to tell them with actions, God loves you. And that's faith ministry. That's faith ministry in action with all of that. Yeah, great, great. And as I understand it, you guys kind of have, a little bit, you kind of have your summer focus, and then you have your focus during the year. So tell us about those two different focuses. And during the summer months, what do you focus on? And this is when teams go down, and this is how Grace has a relationship with faith ministry. And then during the year when teams can't come down as often, you're focused on other things locally. So tell us about your summer focus and your year-round focus. The summer looks beautiful for us. You know, for a few years it was awful with everything happening. But now every week we have a team. And that means that there's a group of people from a church organization coming our way. And we focus on that week and that church. And they come to build a house. And they come and there's nothing. And at the end of the week, there's walls and there's columns and there's a ring and there's a house for families. And we keep telling families, God is awesome. God is good. Perform miracles. And then there's a team coming and building a house for them. And that makes that team an answer to their prayers and how beautiful that is. So that's the summer. They come on a Sunday. They leave on a Friday. And the next team comes either Saturday or Sunday. and that's team after team all the summer. Let me interject real quick before the rest of the year, because one of the things that was interesting to me is to go down, and when you're there and you're helping build the house, and when I say help, I use that term very loosely, because I am no help. I lay the worst cinder block. I'm terrible at it, and I'm never going to do it again. That's what people say in Mexico about you as well. Yeah, I know. I'm probably a legend down there. There's no kidding around. There was one afternoon I worked all afternoon on a wall to get it to this high, and one of my buddies who goes here, Keith Cathcart, he's not here this morning, but he's a jerk. And he was there working as well, and he came around the corner to give me a hard time about the bad job that I was doing and saw the abject stress and terror on my face and left me alone. Can you imagine how bad the wall looked for him to leave me alone? And then when Angel, the foreman, got there later the day, he had to literally, I'm not making this up, take a sledgehammer to the wall to get it back aligned to where it needed to be. So help, the word help is very loose there. I will never attempt to help in that way again. But sorry for the digression. That doesn't count as part of your time. When you get there, usually they have the families on a bulletin board or something in the kitchen of where you're staying and kind of telling you the stories of the family. A single mom who works in an electronics factory and makes a little bit more than a dollar a day, and she's got two kids who are in school, and they're trying to figure it out. So I would love, just off the top of your head, I know I'm putting you on the spot, just an example or two of the last couple of houses that you built, who they were for, what was going on with the families. And then I think it's also important for the folks to know what qualifies you to get a house built for you by Faith Ministry. Well, we have a lot of examples. I'll tell you one that it's a lady that works for us and she injured her hand and she cannot work anymore. She's broken her hand and they have family, extended family with a mentally challenged kid with mobility issues. And for them to build a house, it's horrible. They can say for years and years and years and nothing is going to happen about that. And then there's a team coming in one week building a house for them. And you have to see their faces and their smiles and their tears saying, well, think this is a miracle for us. You know, this is something that God has given us. Years ago, I was working in Miguel de Man with many of you who work and a lady came to me and say, I need a house. And I told her, we cannot build a house anymore. Our summer is done. We have all the teams coming. We're not going to be able to build a house anymore. And she began crying. It's like, what's going on? Tell me. Why do you need a house? And I was not ready for the answer. And she looked at me and said, well, I need a house because I'm dying. I'm going to die. And I said, well, we are going to die, right, one way or another, sooner or later. She's like, no, you don't understand. I'm dying right now. I have cancer in my stomach. And I have two kids that they depend on me. And it was three kids that depended on her, the're little kids, so I'm gonna go and I'm gonna leave them with nothing. So I want a house for them to stay to go in because I'm gonna die and they're gonna thrown out of the street. I was speechless. What do you say to somebody like that? I didn't have any teams coming, everyone was already committed to a house, and it was that need, and I began telling her in the interview, oh, we have an awesome God and a mighty God and a God that makes miracles. And when I hear all of that, I say to myself, David, you and your big mouth, right? Now we're going to have to do something about it. And it was amazing to hear one of the teams calling in and say, David, we told you that we're going to build one house. And guess what? We have the money to build two houses. So you need to find me another family. And that was the miracle right there. So we built a house for her. That was the first member of the Miguel Aleman Presbyterian Church that got baptized. And she got baptized in her bed. And the pastor called me, he's like, David, she passed away, and she passed away with a smile on her face. And that's the impact that you do when you come to the community because you're sharing the love of God right there with people in extreme need. And that's great. Thank you for sharing that with us. And as I understand it, to get a house, to have a house built for you, you have to have someone representing your family who agrees to work for faith ministry. What's the time period on that? How long do they have to work with you guys? It depends. If they bring me tacos, it's a short period of time. Yeah, sure. Yeah. Right. But if they don't. Right. Those jerks. Yeah. Yes. We always ask the families to come in and work because we want them to get involved. We're not a construction company. We don't build houses for people. The house is just an excuse to share the love of God with them. But we want to tell them, if you work hard, you help, good things are going to come. So eight months, we ask them to get involved. And the first thing that they do is not building their own houses. They begin building some other people's houses. And by the time that they build their own house, they already help 10 different houses or 15 different houses by the time they build their own house. And then everyone else is going to join them and build this. And their reward is at the end of the season, they're going to to have a beautiful beautiful house not the wall is not going to be straight all the time no no right but we call it art you know it's like it's it's abstract handcrafted yeah exactly exactly so well there's so many more questions i want to ask you, David, but we are running out of time. So I would encourage you, hang around afterwards for tacos. I've even heard there's going to be an after party after the tacos at Compass Rose where we can hang out with David a little bit longer. So make a plan to stay and hang out and ask him personally what else happens during the year at Faith Ministry and most importantly, how can we get involved as individuals? I would think the biggest way to get involved as an individual 22nd through the 29th, we are taking a trip down there as a church and you can go and see faith ministry. David is really, really good on site at mixing concrete and doing all the manual labor. Very, very impressive at those things. He will be right there alongside you. David doesn't do any of that stuff. He wears khakis every day and says, good job everyone. Which is why I want to be like David. All right, David, thank you so much for your time. God bless you. We look forward to hanging out with you more afterwards. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Hey, Suze. Hey, Nate. I'm glad I don't have to follow David. I don't envy you one little bit. I'm going to do the best I can. I know you will. I know you will. So, again, we'll start off. Suze is with Addis Jamari, a ministry based in Ethiopia that you and your pal Cindy started how many years ago? Six years ago now. Wow. Yeah. Look at you. Okay, so tell us what it is and why. Well, I think it's more interesting to say why it started. You went over there, you saw some things, and then this started, and then tell us what it is. Yeah, so back in 2014, said yes to a mission trip and went to Ethiopia for the first time, and we worked in orphanages. While we were there, the level of poverty that we saw was on a level I'd never seen. But more importantly, the children that were aging out of orphanages were very young. And what happens to them when that happens? And we came home with this bird. What does happen to them when they age out of orphanages? Well, I have a 15-year-old, and that's a similar age to the girls aging out of the orphanage. And they fend for themselves. And that comes with not being educated to find jobs that can be self-sustainable. They end up having to do work that you would not want any child to have to do. Slave labor, sex trafficking, things of that nature. And so this burden was laid on our heart. Because once they age out, and I'm sorry to interrupt, but once they age out, just for our American brains, there's no government infrastructure for them anymore. They've aged out. They've just exited the government infrastructure. Now they're 15 and there's nothing to help them and there is no education. Yeah, basically they're given a small stipend, some pots and pans, maybe a pillow and a good luck. That's it. And so that burden was on our heart. We came home and we said, you know, this is not right. We can do something about this. So we went back multiple times over the next few years and just began to learn, partner alongside other ministries. And Adishamari was launched in 2016, where we first opened a home for orphaned teenage girls. And it was a safe landing place for girls that had aged out to have a loving home with people that could care for them, got them back into school, really taught them about the love of God, that they're valued and worthy. And that's how Adishamari began. Right. But now, if you work in a country long enough, you begin to understand the root issue. And some of the girls in our home had living mothers, but they just couldn't afford to care for them because of poverty. So they had to make that hard decision to relinquish their child to the orphanage, knowing they would have a better chance of getting a meal there than they would at home. So the poverty in Ethiopia, and it's the capital city. We're in Addis Ababa, which is the capital city. I always forget if it's Ababa or Adaba, and I have no confidence to say it, but the capital of Ethiopia. They're there, and these women, and sometimes women and men, sometimes it's couples. They already have children. They have another child, and they are really faced with the decision of, does this child have a better chance at a decent life if we hand them over to the government to feed them because we can inadequately care for our children? Like that's the excruciating decision that their decision point that they're coming to. And some of them are realizing their best shot is to hand them over to the orphanage. Yeah, that's right. So that's how they end up having living mothers. So we noticed and learned that some of our girls in our home had living mothers. And we had this thought, well, what if we had come alongside Zelphy's mom before Zelphy was in the government orphanage and then in our home? And we gave her tools and education and things to thrive. And that's where our family empowerment program kind of came to life, where the AJ Home combats the orphan crisis. The family empowerment program prevents it. So we want to be alongside those families, giving them the tools so they can keep their children at home. So what does the family empowerment program do? So if there's a family that's partnered up with you guys in Ethiopia, what are you providing for them? And what are you asking of them? Yeah, so when you become part of our family empowerment program, we come alongside you with education. We're teaching financial literacy, English. English is very important in Ethiopia. If you know English, you can get better jobs. You can make more money. We do economic empowerment. We're teaching them how to put business plans into practice and business management. We're doing discipleship because none of this really matters if you don't know Christ and the love of God. And then social support, medical assistance, counseling. Most of these families come from immense trauma. And so in order to really make a family whole, you have to get to that root issue of what's causing some of the rift and some of the things that are holding them back from thriving. And I think what else you guys stumbled upon, if I remember correctly, is you look at the scope of the ministry you're able to do. How many girls are you able to have in the home at once? We have six, and we do that intentionally because you can really pour into six. You get many more than that, it becomes orphanage. Yeah, when I was there, you had three. How many families are you serving through the Family Empowerment Program? We intentionally keep that small as well and only do 50 because we want to really, we'd rather pour deep than spread thin. And so we do that so we can really get to know the families. My family is different than your family and different than your family, and we all have different needs. So you really want to get to know the family on an individual basis so you can serve them best. Right. And I think it's, I don't know if you picked up on that, but when they went over, it was to care for girls aging out of orphanages. And then they realized, man, we can be so much more effective if we'll focus on families and prevent it on the front end. And even intentionally keeping it small, three to six compared with 50, and I know that they want you to do more. I know that there's opportunities to take it. You could probably take on another 50 families in the next week if you really wanted to do it. And I also think that that's a wise thing that they're doing because they're a growing organization. So staying small on purpose so we can do it well and grow with wisdom instead of just grabbing all that they can grab and then being overwhelmed and doing a bad job. So I always think highly of you guys for the pace at which you're kind of going through that. So, and I would say this, she's not going to say this. If you want to partner with Addis Jamari, you can sponsor a family. I think sponsoring a family every month is 60 bucks. That's one Chick-fil-A Coke a day. Just don't go to Chick-fil-A just like once a day. Or I went the other day. That's two meals. That's two family of four lunches. It's just two. It's so expensive over there. So just don't go to lunch at Chick-fil-A twice a month. Support Addis Jamari and you're done. It's fantastic. But that is an easy way to get involved. Suze will be at a table out there, and you can find out how to support a family for the FEP program and know that what's happening over there is really, really an effective use of God's resources to love on those families. So as we wrap up, what's next for AJ? What's on the horizon? What are you most excited about? Yeah, July's a big month. We get our second set of 50 families. We are moving FEP centers. Inflation in Ethiopia has been at a rate of 35%. And so our landlord so kindly told us recently the new cost to stay at the center. And unfortunately, we had to make a move. But with that comes great blessings. So we're moving to a new FEP center. We have 50 new families coming into our program. And we also have a new girl joining our home tomorrow. So if you guys can be praying for all of those things. What's her name? Her name is Solita. Solita. Yes, I love that name. So yeah, she comes with a really hard story. So just prayer that she will feel like God's presence from day one, that the other girls in our home will wrap their arms and love around her and that she'll just immediately feel like she's home. Good, good. Great. Well, will you join me in prayer for these ministries and for Solita? And then I think, are we closing out with worship? We're not? We're canning it? Oh yeah, I'm supposed to ask everybody to do a thing. All right, let's pray. Father, thanks so much for this morning. We lift up Solita to you and just are so grateful that it was your will to acquaint her with Addis Jamari. We pray that your hand would be on her in the transition to yet another new place with yet more new faces, but that these would be faces that reflect your love. These would be eyes that carry your acceptance and your support, and that these would be arms that are your arms wrapping wrapping around her and that when she moves out, however many years from now she does, that she would be an equipped young woman with a heart for Jesus and want to go share the love with others that she's received from the home at Addis Jamari. We pray for AJ as they move into July and all the exciting things going on. And we know that even though it is difficult to change homes, God, that your hand is in that. And I pray that they would see evidence all over the new complex that this is exactly where you want them to be as they look to move forward. Thank you for David and what he's doing in faith ministry and how you're using him to share your love with the people in Reynosa and Mago de Arman. And God, we just are so grateful for the opportunity to partner with them. I pray that we would continue to partner with these ministries boldly and cheerfully as a church, but that we would also do that as individuals as well. We'll be right back. I don't know about you, but when you hear the word revival, we often think of reviving the city, which is what we prayed for, reviving the community, the people around us. God, let's see your spirit move and people come to know you in amazing ways. And that is what revival is, and that is the revival that God brings. But as Aaron alluded to in his prayer, he also revives individuals. He also breathes life into dry bones. And so if you are here this morning and your spiritual health, you personally, your soul, is in need of revival, God does that too. And as you sung and you prayed and sung for revival, just know that I have prayed for you this morning that God would revive our spirits, that God would breathe fresh life into us. And that I pray that prayer for myself often. So just know that though God does revive communities and cities, that he breathed life into us as well, and he revives us too. And if that's you, be encouraged this morning. I also wanted to mention before I jump in that the reason the church looks the way it does in the lobby is not just because it's summertime and we're encouraging you to go on vacation. You walk in, it's like, why are you here? You should be at the beach. But since you're not, here's some beach for you, which is also great. But tomorrow starts Summer Extreme. It's the first day of it. It goes for three nights, Monday through Wednesday. And we really hope that you'll come and hang out with us, even if you are not signed up to help or your child's not signed up to be a part of it. Now, as we look to finish the series in Peter, this week is part two of a two-part sermon that, you guessed it, I started last week. So I would tell you if you're watching online or catching up online or via the podcast or however it is you consume the sermons, I would encourage you to pause it here and go listen to last week's so that this week's makes more sense. Now, for those of you in the room who either you were here last week and you just forgot what I said, which I don't blame you. I forget what I preach about half the time. Or you were here this week, but you weren't here last week. Just by way of context, this is what we talked about so that we can arrive at verse 8 this week. It's a two-part sermon in 2 Peter 1, verses 5-8 that I said kind of gives us all that we need for life and godliness and points us in the right direction and tells us why we're running it. And it's a really, really important passage to me. And I hope that God makes it an important passage to you as well. So last week, we agreed that biblically speaking, the apex value is love. That's what we are to go for. We looked at Paul summing this up in Corinthians 13, where he says, now these three remain, faith, hope, and love, and the greatest of these is love. And then we looked at Jesus's capstone of a new commandment. All the other commandments are fine, but I'm going to give you a new one that encapsulates all of them. Go and love others as I have loved you. Go and offer Christ-like love. And so we agree that we are supposed to pursue love as believers. But the problem is that telling a new believer to go and offer love as Christ offered to us, sacrificial Christ-like love, is like telling a crawling baby to go and run a marathon. There's some steps that have to happen along the way. There's some things that we need to build to so that we even have the capacity to offer Christ-like love. And Peter lays out those building blocks for us in verses five through seven. He says, for this reason, make every effort to add to your faith, knowledge, to knowledge, virtue, to virtue, self-control, to self-control, perseverance, to perseverance, godliness, to godliness, brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness, love. So there's these things that we have to build to before we have the capacity to love. And the encouragement at the end was to go and, like Peter says, make every effort. Go from here and make every effort to build towards the capacity to love others as Christ has loved you. That was the admonishment as we went last week. And one of the things that I love about the Bible and about the Christian faith is whenever we're told to do something, we should start doing these things, we should stop doing these things, we should embrace these virtues, and we should shun these vices, we're always in Scripture given a reason why. And the reason is never because God said so. And the amazing thing is, it very well could be. God can make the reason for everything he asks us to do because I said so. And we would go, well, you're creator God, you're all powerful, you're in charge of the universe. We are not because you said so is sufficient for us. let's go. Because God said so should be sufficient and yet still in his goodness, he never leaves it there. Whenever you look at what scripture asks you to do, at what God requires of us, you never have to look very hard for the why. Why does God want me to do that? Why is that what's actually best for me? It's always very clear in scripture when God asks us, when Jesus instructs us to do something, when we say why, why is that what's best for me? You can find that answer very quickly. And that's what verse eight does for us. So if we go, okay, I'm supposed to go from here and I'm supposed to go pursue, make every effort to have the capacity to love others as Christ loved me. That's what I need to do. I need to go pursue the capacity for Christ-like love. Why do I need to do that? Well, verse eight tells us why we need to do that. And I would sum it up in this way. I would tell you that this is the why. This is why it's best for us to pursue the capacity to love as Jesus did. If we pursue love, our deepest desires will come true. If we simply pursue the capacity to offer Christ-like love, our deepest desires will come to fruition. Now, I know that that sounds an awful lot like the health and wealth gospel that I tell you all the time that I hate and is not true. It is a trick of Satan. It ruins faiths and it shipwrecks Christians. It forces people to walk away from it when we have this idea that if I just go to God, everything's going to work out. I won't experience any tragedy. I'm probably going to make a little bit more money than I used to. I'm definitely going to get this promotion. If I'll just dedicate myself to God, then he'll give me the things that I want. And so I know that when I say, if we simply pursue Christ-like love, then he will give us our deepest desires. I know that sounds like I'm doing health and wealth, but I promise you I'm not, and here's why. First of all, what I'm saying is biblical. Second of all, I can say that if we pursue love, we will see our deepest desires come to fruition because I'm pretty sure I can guess what yours are. I don't know how you would word it or what you would say are your deepest desires in life, but I bet 1A and 1B, I bet for one, it's I just want to know when many years from now, when I'm facing death, when it is imminent, when I'm on my deathbed and I'm thinking back on my life, I want to know that I loved well. I want to know that I have family in my life who love me and are grateful for me. I want to know that in those waning years, I am surrounded by people who love me because I have invested my life in loving others. I want to know that I will love well. And so clearly, if we spend our life loving as Christ did, that will come to fruition. The other thing, 1B, that we all want to know, that we all deeply desire at the end of life, thinking back on life, what is it that we most want? I would be willing to bet that we all want to live a life that matters. That in our waning years, as we reflect back on the life that we led, that we will want to know and feel good about the life that we led. Did I invest it in the right things? Did I accomplish what I was supposed to accomplish? Did my life make a difference? Did it matter at all or will I fade into oblivion and no one will ever think of me or remember me again? Did I live a life that matters? I mean, this is what a midlife crisis is, right? And if you haven't dealt with one, it's coming. It's when you get in the middle of your life and your head's been down since you were in your 20s and you've just been making your path and making your way and figuring out life and getting independent. And then at some point or another, you pull your head up from all the work and you go, wait a second, I've built this whole life around myself. Is this even what I want? Is this the life that I wanted to build? And I've talked with enough people who were in their later years of their life to know that when you get to that stage, you think about, have I loved well and have I lived a life that matters? That's what we all want. We all want to live a life that matters. I remember when this really clicked for me. I was 18 or 19 years old, and I was at a Sunday night church service at my church. Remember when churches used to have Sunday night services? That's when pastors were good, man. We're lazy now. I go to this service, and there was a summer camp that we went to at my church called Look Up Lodge. And the director of that camp, the speaker of that camp, was a guy named Greg Boone. And we had invited Greg to come and to speak that night at our church. There was probably about 500 people there. And what Greg didn't know is that it was really a service to honor him because we were just grateful for the profound impact he had made on the youth of the church and the families of the church and the church as a whole. And so at one point or another, there was some boys up in the front that Greg had discipled, and I could explain the whole thing, but there's high school guys in the front of the room with candles, and everybody's got a candle in their seat. And Pastor Buddy gets up, and he says, if Greg Boone has touched your life directly through his ministry because you've been to look up Lodge and God has used him to impact you, I'd like you to stand up. And so me and all my friends and all the youth group leaders and parents and volunteers stand up. And before you know it, all 500 people are standing up. And then the boys walk down the aisle and they light all the candles and the lights are off in the room, but the room's totally illuminated. And Greg is able to visibly see the impact that his life has had in one space. And I remember in that moment, I was very moved by it. And I prayed, God, I don't ever need to see the room. I don't ever need to see the candles, but just let me live a life that could fill up one of these places. That's all I want. And I know that for my friends, it resonated with them too, because what you see in that moment is purpose. What you see in that moment is a life that mattered, that God was using, and that's a common desire that we all have. Now, some of you would never be as audacious to say, God, I want to know that I could fill up a room with the people that I've impacted. Some of you, our vision is as small as our family is, and that's fine, but the thing that we have in common, no matter how big or how small our vision is for what we want for our future, is that we want it to matter. We want it to count. And that's why I love verse 8 so much. Because it promises us that it will. It promises us that there's a way that we can ensure that our life will matter. That at the end of the day, when we're sitting there in the waning years of our life and we're reflecting back on a life lived, we can know that we know that we know that our life will matter, that at the end of the day, when we're sitting there in the waning years of our life and we're reflecting back on a life lived, we can know that we know that we know that our life was impactful and used by God. It can safeguard us against that fear. There's that, I love, it's a D.L. Moody quote where he says, one of the greatest tragedies in life is for a person to spend their life climbing the ladder of success only to get to the top and find that it was propped against the wrong building. How do we insure ourselves against that? Verse 8. Other versions say ineffective or unproductive in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. And it's really very simple. You want to live a life that matters? To know that we're investing it in the right things? Then pursue these things. Go and do what we talked about last week. Pursue the capacity to love as Christ loved. Pursue these things. Make every effort to pursue them. And when you do, you will build a life that matters. God will use that person in incredible ways. When we commit ourselves to pursuing the virtues laid out for us in 2 Peter 1, verses 5-7. The promise is, if you commit yourself to those things, Jesus says, God says, Peter says, I promise you that your life will matter. And so the bottom line is, if we pursue Christ-like love, we can be certain that our lives will matter. And here's what I love about this truth is it's really just a focus on the fundamentals. We don't have to map it out. We don't have to think about the ministries that we're going to start or the people that we're going to disciple or the folks that we're going to share our faith with. We don't have to think about the things that we're going to build and this grand strategy for down the road. All we have to do is focus on the fundamentals. All we have to do is focus on these virtues, and God will use us as we pursue those. It reminds me of my experience, it feels like a lifetime ago, as a high school football coach. You guys may not know, but for three years of my life, from 2007 to 2010, I was a high school Bible teacher and school chaplain for Covenant Christian Academy in Loganville, Georgia. And it is every bit as fancy as you think it is. We had a cafe gym notarium that everything happened in. It was one of those schools. And the first week that I was hired, I'm starting out fresh. I was 26 or 27 years old, and I mean, I looked great. And we had a new science teacher named Coach McCready. Coach McCready is one of my favorite people I've ever met in my life. I love him very dearly. He was a recon Marine in Vietnam, and he was a tailback for Auburn in the 60s. He was the toughest man I've ever met. He's the only person I've met that I've been instantly scared of as soon as we started talking, and he was wonderful. So he comes to my classroom and he says, hey, Coach Rector. And I'm like, I don't even coach anything here. He goes, hey, Coach Rector, you got any experience in football? I said, no, sir. And he goes, I want you to come practice anyways, baby. I was like, okay. So I text Jen. I'm like, I got to go to practice. Coach says I have to go to practice. I'll be home late. So I go to practice and I'm out there watching the boys. They're practicing. They're doing whatever, and there's this guy off in the corner, and he's kicking a football, and he's not doing a very good job at it. And I've played a little bit of soccer in my life, so I said, hey, coach, I don't really have a lot of experience blocking and tackling, but I know how to kick things. You want me to work with that guy over there who clearly needs it? I can teach him how to kick things. And he's like, and he puts his hand on my shoulder and he goes, Coach Rector, congratulations. You've just become my new special teams coordinator, baby. It came with a free shirt and the whole deal. It was great. And we get out there and I become part of the staff and we're talking about strategy and all the other things. And this team was terrible. They were awful. The previous year, they were two and eight. The team they beat was the same. They beat one team twice who was just, they had like three children running around out there. And this is rinky-dink small-time football. This is eight-man football. It is not a big deal at all, but it's the best we could muster in our private school league when we were two and eight the year before. And we also, from the previous coaching staff, inherited this big, huge playbook, right? Like a wristband with the flap and like 75 different plays that you have to call in from the side. And these kids are trying to figure it out and they don't know what direction to run. Their shoulder pads don't fit and the pants are too small. But we got 75 plays. And these really complicated, intricate defenses and the whole deal. And nobody knew what was going on, but it was very clear that the previous regime had focused heavily on strategy, right, and not so much on fundamentals because these guys were terrible at everything. And so Coach threw it all out. He said, we don't need any of these plays. And the quarterback's like, that's all I know, Coach. He's like, don't worry. You're not going to have to learn that much. And I'm not kidding you. We reduced the whole playbook. We had two defensive formations that each had one play, blitz or don't. That was it. That was it. And if you don't know what that means, somebody laughing will explain it to you later. That was it. Those are the two options. Everybody go for the quarterback or everybody kind of hang out. That was it. That was all you had in two formations. And then we reduced 75 offensive plays to 12. And coach said, and everybody was like, coach, don't you think we need more? We're going to get a little predictable. Don't you think we're going to need more plays in this? He says, nope. All we need to do is block and tackle, baby. We just need to teach the boys to block and tackle and we'll be fine. Everything else take care of itself. And that's all we did in practice. We blocked and tackled. We ran those 12 plays. And that first year we made it to the playoffs. And then the three years after that, Coach McCready won back-to-back-to-back state championships. You know why? Because he had a great special teams coordinator. But also because we just focused on the fundamentals. Let's just learn to block and tackle. That happens on every play in football, and the results will come. Let's focus on the fundamentals. And so to me, there's a correlation there between the way that he coached and the way that Peter is coaching us. Don't worry about strategy. Don't worry about the 75 plays. Don't worry about the future and your grand plans and your big vision. Don't worry about that. You just focus on faith and knowledge and godliness and brotherly kindness and perseverance and self-control and virtue and love. You focus on those things and God will take care of how he uses you. You focus on those things and God will take those people and put them to work. You focus on those things. Don't worry about strategy. Don't worry about how big the ministry is. Don't worry about what you're supposed to start or what you're supposed to stop. You focus on these characteristics and we are promised in Scripture that we will live a life that is productive and fruitful of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are promised a life that will echo in eternity because of how we invest it now. And what could be a better investment of a life than one that matters for all eternity? The other thing that I love about this passage is it's not the only place that promise is made. That, hey, if you just simply focus on these things, then I promise you you will be effective and productive. I promise you that when you get to heaven, you'll hear the words that every Christian longs to hear, well done, good and faithful servant. This isn't the only place that promise shows up. The other place it shows up that I can think of is in John chapter 15, when Jesus is talking to the disciples and he calls himself the vine and then the branches. And he says this, I am the vine, you are the branches, whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit. It's the same thing. Don't worry about plans. Don't worry about ministries. Don't worry about all the things you're supposed to do. Don't worry about all the things you're supposed to learn. You abide in me. You focus on me. You stick with me. You walk with me. You abide in me. And I promise as you do that, the results will take care of themselves. You will bear much fruit. God will use you in incredible ways if we simply abide in Christ. And the question becomes, well, what do I do to abide in Christ? And that's such an important question. And I was actually reading this passage this morning. And what he says prior to this is, abide in me. And the way that you abide in me is to obey my commands. And what was Jesus' command? To go love as I have loved you. It was a singular command. How do we abide in Christ? How do we promise that we will be fruitful? We love as Christ loved us. How do we love as Christ loved us? Well, we go through Peter and we build these virtues. We make every effort. These two passages are intricately connected to one another and they promise us that we can live lives that matter. But here's the other thing I would tell you as we pursue these lives that matter in God's kingdom and for all of eternity, that if you commit yourself to these character traits, if you commit yourself to being able to offer Christ-like love to people around you, sacrificial, selfless love to people around you. God will change those desires about how you're going to matter. He will change your plans. He's got a different path for you than you do. I saw this meted out in my dad, who when he started in his career, his goal was to be a millionaire by the time he was 40. And somewhere in there, as he pursued these character traits and fits and starts, God changed his heart and his goal became, before I retire, I want to have given away a million dollars. It changes you. And where it changed me is really the rest of the story about the candles. Because the rest of the story is, I went and I worked at Look Up. I worked for Greg because I wanted those candles. And when I got to Look Up, I met a man named Harry Stevenson. Harry was the maintenance director at the camp. Harry unclogged toilets and cut grass and felled trees and cleaned up hair clogs from the girl campers. Harry had a very humble job. Harry, from my 18, 19-year-old brain, was doing very little to impact the kingdom. There would be no candles for Harry. Greg was the guy. Except that, Harry discipled Greg. When Greg didn't know what to do in his marriage or in his family or in his ministry, he went and he talked to Harry first. Harry was the one who welcomed us. Harry was the one who led a Bible study that changed my life forever. Harry was the one that recommended to me a book called Abide in Christ by Andrew Murray that's one of the best, most formative books I've ever read all about these promises. And Harry was the one that when I looked at him the very first time I met him short guy, balding, deep piercing blue eyes and a mustache. And the way that he looked at me and the way that he smiled at me, I could see it in his eyes and I don't know how to describe it, but I knew in that moment this man loves God and this man loves me. I just knew it. And I've not met very many people with those eyes. That when you see them, when they look at you, there's something else happening there. There's some other kind of grace there. And you know this person loves God and they love me. And I didn't catch it at the time, but I was reflecting back years later. And I realized life is not about the candles at all. It's about the eyes. It's not about the rooms that we could fill with the people that we've impacted. It's about what it's like to be in our presence as we are conduits of God's love. And somewhere in my life, I shifted from wanting to be like Greg to just wishing I was a little bit more like Harry. And I'm so far off from it. Frankly, it would be a lot easier for me to try to be like Greg. But God, in his goodness, has shifted my desires to want to be like that person that simply loves. And I promise you, I promise you, that when Harry is in heaven one day, the people who are going to come to him and want to hug his neck are legion. I promise you that his life has mattered in ways that will echo in eternity. And it's because Harry simply pursued these values and these virtues. And God has used him in incredible ways to love others all along the way. And one of my favorite things about our Christian faith, if you're here and you're a believer, about our shared faith, is that God in his goodness offers us the joy and peace of purpose. If you're a Christian, you don't have to wonder, why am I here? What's my life for? How should I invest myself? What should I do? What's the best investment of my time? Where should I put my efforts? We don't have to worry about that. We don't have to be frantic about that. We don't have to get to 60 years old and wonder if we're doing it right. We don't have to get to 80 years old and wonder if we're doing it right. We don't have to keep getting older and wonder if we've already done everything right. God tells us what to do. Pursue Him. Pursue love. Make every effort to have the capacity to offer the love of Christ to other people. And I promise you, I promise you, I promise you based on Scripture, based on 2 Peter, based on John 15, based on the promises of Christ that you will have a life well lived. So my prayer for you is that this passage in 2 Peter 1 would take hold in your heart and possess a place of prominence in your life. It's a passage that I come back to regularly. It's a passage that every time I read it, I smile. Every time I read it, I want to talk about it and I want to tell people about it and I want people to understand the truth from it. And so I know that not everything I've said over the last two weeks, we're just going to follow in lockstep. I know that we've got life and we've got to move on from here and you're going to forget the things I said, even if you thought that they were good. But my hope is that this passage has made enough of an impression on you that you'll revisit it again, that you'll come back to it over and over again, that you'll be affirmed. If I simply choose to pursue love, if I simply be who God has designed me to be. It's not about how I behave, it's about who I am. If I'll simply let God create, work me into who he wants me to be and love other people well, I will have no regrets as I fade into eternity. I hope that this passage can mean for you what it means for me and that God will bring you back to it with a more fullness of understanding as we go from here. And I hope and I pray that you all would be people who go live lives that matter and that they matter because you love well, because you've pursued him earnestly, because you've made every effort. Let's pray. Father, we do love you. We do thank you for the joy and peace of purpose. We thank you for taking the stress of the unknown away from us and not having to wonder what we should do or where we should go, but that you make it very simple for us. Help us to be people who pursue the capacity to offer love as you've offered to us. Make us, God, people like Harry, who when other people interact with us, they know that we love you and that we love them. Let other people feel your love as it channels through us. And God, for those in this room whose spirits need revival, would you please revive them? Even in this song, even as we close, I pray that we would leave here with more of a desire to be close to you than what we entered with. God, I pray that our hearts would be softened towards you. They would be softer than they were when they entered into this place. God, I pray that as we leave here, we would have a stronger desire to know you, to love you, and to love others than we did when we came through those doors. And I pray that your spirit would remind us of it and hold us fast to it, and that those desires would not fade as we do your work for others and on ourselves this week. It's in your son's name that we ask all these things. Amen.

Well, good morning, everybody. My name is Nate. I get to be one of the pastors here, and it's good to see you. Thank you for coming on a holiday weekend. I always like to tell the folks that come on a holiday weekend that God does love you more than the people at the beach right now. You've made the wise choice, and God will not forget this. Before I just dive into the sermon, obviously it's been a very heavy week. We found out in the ways that we find out on your phone or on your TV or from a text or whatever that there was another school shooting, that the uniquely American problem happened again. And I can't speak for you and the emotions that you went through. I could guess at some of them. But I went awful quick to anger this time. And I think one of the things that angers me the most is the hopelessness that you feel for anything to actually change, for us as a country to actually do anything that matters in any way, that can give parents who send kids to school or people who go to grocery stores or people who go to church. Our strategy now as a country is simply to hope it's not us. That's our whole plan. And that's enraging. And one of the things that angers me most is the way the church seems to respond to this when it happens. And I have a lot of thoughts about what church should do, what the body of Christ should do in the wake of these tragedies. And I almost scrapped a sermon this week to share those thoughts. But I feel so strongly about them that I do not trust myself to stay in my lane and address it. I don't trust myself to get up here and not tell you what I really think. So I don't think it would be wise for me to do that. If you would like to get a beer, I'll tell you everything, I think. And I'll buy. But one thing that I do know, one response that the church should have is to be the light that beats back the darkness. Because this is a week, to me, the word that I kept feeling was despair. What can we do? What's going to change? What do we expect ourselves to do as a country when this happens again? Because it will. And you just feel this sense of despair sink in when you realize the answer is nothing. But that's not the whole answer. I was reminded this week of a quote that I share every Easter. It's one of my favorite quotes. It's from Pope John Paul II who said, for we do not give way to despair, for we are the Easter people, and hallelujah is our song. And so what the church does in moments like these is we cling to hope. We cling to the hope that Jesus will keep his promises, that he will return one day and he will make the wrong things right and the sad things untrue, that he will rectify things like this, and that there is coming a day when we will no longer get news like this. When tragedies that happen like this that cause the national conscience to weep, there's coming a day when this won't happen anymore. And that's the day that Jesus keeps his promises. So as Christians, we do this. We gather and we sing praises and we honor our Jesus and we declare him in the public square and we agree with the world that this place is broken but that we have a savior who will fix it. And so we are the light and the darkness. We are the army that beats back despair. So let's pray. Let's pray for our country. Let's pray for the families in Uvalde. And let's pray that maybe we won't have to wait for the return of Jesus for something to be different about these instances and their occurrences in the future. Let's pray. Lord, we know that you are brokenhearted this week too. We know that we are brokenhearted about this tragedy because it has been shoved in our faces, but God, I cannot imagine the tragedies you see meted out across the world on a weekly basis that must be so heavy on your heart. So God, we just first pray that Jesus would come. We cry out with the martyrs in Revelation 6 and say, how much longer, God? But until that day comes, God, give us strength to cling to you. Make us your lights in dark places. Make us your army that beats back despair. Help us to love. Help us to help others mourn. Help us be voices of reason in our different circles of influence that ultimately point people back to you. And God, we just lift up these families in Uvalde. The mamas and daddies with empty beds and bedrooms. God, the police officers that know now that they made some great mistakes that they have to live with. God, I just pray that you would pick them up too. Lord, we don't know what to pray. Everything we say feels inadequate. But we ask that you would be there, that your children would be seen, and that your light would be noticed. Your word says that you are close to the brokenhearted and that you comfort those who are crushed in spirit. So would your spirit act in Uvalde to surround those people? And God, would your spirit act in the leadership of our country to do what we need to do to protect our children in the future? Move and stir, God, in ways that only you can so that we don't have to live in fear of things like this. It's in your son's name we pray. Amen. Admittedly, transitioning to a sermon after that feels a little silly, but we're going to do it together, and in like two minutes you won't even notice, okay? So, Peter. We're in the book of Peter, and this week, we're looking at 1 Peter 5, verses 1 through 11, and I'm just going to work through that text. This is going to be a good old-fashioned sermon. We're just going to read a part of the Bible, and we're going to go, what's that say? And then we're going to talk about it a little bit. So, you have a Bible in the seat back in front of you. I would highly encourage you to pull that out if you did not bring one with you. If you're looking at your phone, I will assume that it is the Bible app and not somebody you were texting. But we're going to look at 1 Peter chapter 5 verses 1 through 11. And as is my habit, I open up the passage or the topic that I'm going to be addressing that week, typically on a Monday, and kind of look at it and begin to pray through, okay, God, what do you have for us in this passage? What do you want grace to know from here? And as I read the passage this week, I thought it was incredibly appropriate because the passage on the whole is addressed to the elders of the church. Now there is one sentence in there about how young people are supposed to act, and we'll talk about that sentence. But on the whole, this passage is Peter closes up this letter. This is the very end of 1 Peter. So it's the very end of his letter. So he closes it up with some summary advice. And most of this advice is directed towards the elders of the church. And when you see the word elders of the church in the New Testament, that means the leaders of the church, both in official office and de facto leaders of the church. And I thought, well, this is perfect timing to take a passage that addresses the leaders of the church, not necessarily the older people in the church, but those who are older and more mature in their faith in the church. It's interesting to me that this passage came up on a holiday weekend, and we even kind of put out on social media that if you're the kind of person who comes to church on a holiday weekend, then this is the kind of sermon for you. Because in this passage, we are addressing the elders of the church, the leaders of the church, and many of you are leaders within grace. And I don't get the opportunity to do this very often, to kind of say, hey, grace, those of you who lead, those of you who are on committees, those of you who are elders, those of you who serve in children, those of you who lead in any capacity, when we lead at grace, here's what's expected of us. Here is the kind of leaders that God wants to install into his church. So we're going to take a morning and address those of us who are leaders within grace. A couple things about that. There's some of you who are sitting there thinking, well, great, I'm not a leader here. I'm not a leader anywhere. This does not pertain to me. And you may be right. You may not be a leader. You may not lead here yet. You may not feel like you have influence outside of here. But some of you, some of you are wrong about that. Some of you are right. And if you're right about it and you're not leading yet, I would just say, keep being the kind of person who comes to church on holiday weekends and pretty soon you're going to be leading in the church. So pay attention because the goal, one of the things that we're supposed to do as we grow in our faith is lead the church in certain ways. Now, I don't mean positions and roles of leadership, but I do mean that we become people who have influence, whose example other people look at. And so if we go through our entire Christian life and we go to the same church for 25 years and we're never at any point looked to as a leader for anything, no one ever follows our example for anything ever, then we're probably not growing and living out our faith the way that we need to. So even if you don't feel like you're there yet, if you stay consistent and faithful, God gives us opportunities. And so I think this can be helpful to tuck away and say, when I have an opportunity to lead, this is what I want to lead like. Now, some of you who think that you're not leaders in the church, you're simply wrong because you are. Because I would actually define and frame up leadership in this way. If people are paying attention to your example, then you're a leader. If people pay attention to your example, if there's someone who looks at you and because of the way you act, they think that's the way that I ought to act as well, then you're leading in the church whether you like it or not. My sweet wife right here would never, ever, ever call herself a leader. She doesn't like the idea. She doesn't want to be in positions of leadership. She hates it. I'm talking about her right now. I'm going to hear about this later. But she teaches the fourth and fifth grade kids. And if you've been in the fourth and fifth grade for the past three or four years, then you've watched Miss Jen, and you've watched how she's interacted with your parents and other people's parents and other people in the church, and they've looked to her to learn, in part, how they ought to behave and carry themselves in the public square. If you serve in kids ministry, you're leading in the church, whether you like it or not. If you're on a committee, you're leading, whether you like it or not. If you're somebody in small group who speaks up often, if you can be counted on to give your input every week, you're leading, whether you like it or not. So many, many, many of you are leaders within grace without holding official office. And some of you are leaders within grace and you do have that office. You're on staff. You're an elder. You serve on a committee or you chair a committee or you help with volunteer efforts or whatever. So many of us in this room are currently leading and setting an example and exerting influence over the church. And if you're not doing it yet, you will. So as we accept that, what does God want from us as leaders? How does Peter tell us to lead? Before I answer that question, I do want to honor the text. There is one sentence about how young people are supposed to behave in the church, and it's in verse 5, and it says this, likewise, you who are younger be subject to the elders. And then it goes on, and we'll read that verse, the rest of the verse in a minute. But I take that to mean you who are younger in your faith, heed the advice and the wisdom of the people in the church who are older in their faith than you. Listen to them. Learn from them. Ask them questions. Don't think that you have it all figured out. Don't immediately dismiss them as old and antiquated and you have the right way to do all the things. Because the church gets better when we respect our elders. I'm talking specifically to the people who are younger than me. The church gets better, I'm just messing around, when we respect our elders. When we actually listen to the generations that came before us. And I know that's true, and I've experienced it being true recently, because of the way that the cross behind me ended up getting up on this stage. Back in the fall, months ago, the fall in autumn, not the fall of man in Genesis, but back several months ago in autumn, I got an email from an older lady in the church. And she's part of a small group that's populated with some of our older folks. It's like Chris and Karen's age. I'm just messing around, sorry. You know, Lucy Goosey on Memorial Day. Really and truly some of our older people in the church, they're in a small group. It's a great small group. They've been meeting for a long time. And most of them, I think maybe all, none of them come, but they all watch online every week. They're still just being very cautious and I don't blame them. Well, one of them emailed me and she said very sweetly that she really thought it would be great if there could be a cross on the stage and laid out all the reasons why she thought it would be great if there was a cross on the stage. And I responded to her and I said, you know, I agree with you. I looked at some ways to do it. Didn't really have a great way to get it done. So I just didn't do it. Now, you know, we're going to be getting a new space, so what's the hassle? Why bother with it? And I just kind of sloughed it off, right? Like, I understand we're pro-cross here, but we've got a lot, we've got cross in our logo and everything, so let's just relax about the cross, which seems like a really wonderful pastor response. And I mean, I said it nicer and more eloquently than that in big and long email and whatever, and I sent it off to her, and I didn't hear back. And then in February, to open our series in Lent, I preached a sermon, and in the sermon, one of the things I said was that we were acknowledging that we're standing on shoulders of the generations that came before us, and that this church wants to be a church that listens to all the voices in the church, that God forbid there be a generation of people who feel like they have aged out of relevance and that we no longer listen to them anymore. I would hate for Grace to be that place. So then I get another email. Hey, you remember what you preached? And I'm like, man, she's at it again. And she said the whole small group agrees with her. Now listen, call me a pessimist. I've been told plenty of times. Oh yeah, yeah, I think this and a bunch of other people do too. Oh yeah, who are the bunch? Well, my wife. Anybody else? But I'm sure they would agree if I talked to them. Yeah, okay, so let's chill out with whole small group language, right? And I was kind of skeptical. But I could tell it was really important to her, so I called the small group leader, an old elder of ours, who I have a good relationship with, and I said, hey man, what's the deal here? What do you think I should do? And his wife took the phone from him. And she said, you need to listen to us. Now they said it in a much nicer way than this, because these are two of the kindest people that I know. But they essentially said, you just shut up and do it, all right? Like you said you wanted to listen to the older generation. Here's your chance, big dog, do it. And I'm like, yeah, it cost me very little to do this. We need to do it. So I reached out to Greg Taylor, one of our great partners, and I said, let's inlay a cross in there, and we did. And honestly, it looks great. It was funny. We debuted it on Easter, and people were coming up to me, and they're like, hey, can we please keep the cross up there? Is that just for Easter? I'm like, yeah, no, Greg worked on it for like 20 hours, so it's going to stay up there. And in the weeks subsequent to that, Jen and I are standing over here worshiping, and she leans over to me, and she goes, it looks so good. It makes this room so much better. And it does. And I emailed the whole small group, and I said, guys, I am so sorry for being obstinate and stubborn and not listening to you. You made the church better. Thank you for your grace and putting up with me. And they were very kind and they are very gracious to me. But the church gets better when we listen to the voices that came before us. We should not slough them off. We should not dismiss them as antiquated, as not understanding, as not really getting it. We should hear some value in their years and in their experience and apply it to our lives. Our marriages would get better. Our small groups will get better. Our children will get better. Our relationships and our families will get better when we listen to the voices that came before us. Now, most of the passage, as I said, is addressed to the elders in the church, to the leaders in the church, to those who exert influence in the church. And I think I laid out the case that that's going to be most of you. So what does God expect from his leaders? And as we think about leadership at Grace, what do we expect from our leaders? So what does God ask of his leaders? The first thing that he asks is that we lead for the sake of others, not ourselves. Lead for the sake of others, not yourselves. I'm going to read you the verses that kind of lay this out, starting in verse 1. He writes, This may be to me the most crucial element of effective leadership. It may be for me the biggest responsibility that anyone with influence carries. That we acknowledge that we carry that influence not for ourselves, but for the sake of those that we serve. We're put in a position of committee chair, sitting on a committee, or being an elder, or being placed on staff, or being placed in a volunteer role. We're placed there not for ourselves, but so that we can serve the people that we have influence over. And sometimes it's really easy to see how people will use their leadership to be domineering and make it about themselves. I have a good buddy whose son Miles is six years old and he's playing on his first little T-ball baseball team or whatever it is. And he was expressing some frustration the other day because the coach will only put Miles in right field. He never puts him in any other positions. And my buddy's kind of, he's ticked. And he's like, listen, Miles isn't the best one out there. He might be the worst one out there, but he's also six. And this is teaching him to hate baseball, which is fine for me because sooner later, you learn to hate baseball. It's super boring. But it just makes me so mad, because that coach is making just this tiny little modicum of leadership over a bunch of six-year-olds. You're doing it because no one else wants to, dude. Like, we've all made the mistake, and now you've fallen on the sword. But it's going to his head, and his whole goal is to win ballgames. So. So I got to put the best players in the best places because if I don't win this six-year-old baseball game, I'm not going to be easy to live with this Saturday. Like, come on. It's silly. And so sometimes it's easy to tell when people in positions of leadership are doing it in a domineering way, are making it about themselves and what they can get out of it and not about others. But sometimes it's a lot more subtle than that. And I know for me that this lesson came home to roost over COVID, specifically in the summer of 2020 and coming out of 2020 into 2021. I realized during that season, and I'm going to be vulnerable with the Memorial Day crowd here because no one's going to keep up with this online. Let's pick it up next week. I realized during that season that my primary motivator in doing sermons and preparing sermons, whether I liked it or not, and it had always been this way, and I would have never admitted it to you, but I would have said, yeah, that's there, but I keep my eye on it. But really and truly, for all of my preaching career, dating back to when I was 25 years old and started preaching at Covenant Community Church, my primary motivator in preparing and presenting sermons was I want to impress you. That's it. I want you to think I'm good at it. I want you to think I'm smart. I want you to think that my insights are good. I want to show you something you haven't thought about before in a long time. Show you something fresh. I wanted to, you know, learn to raise my voice when I'm supposed to and lean in when it matters and all the stuff that you learn to do. And then my primary motivation was to just be impressive. Dating all the way back to when I first started. God gave me influence. He put me on a stage and he winds me up and he lets me go. And my primary motivator in that was that I would be exalted. That I would get to walk through the lobby a hero for this wonderful message that I just gave. And I was really good at pretending like, oh, thank you, thank you. But I loved it. And then COVID happened. And when COVID happened, I'm in this room preaching to that camera with one other person here. He's sitting at the soundboard not even listening to the words that I'm saying, just trying to make sure technically everything's going well. So I'm literally preaching to nothing. And we would record on Thursday. Sunday would come around. I'd sit in my living room and watch it, which felt super weird to sit in your own living room and watch yourself preach with your family expecting them. Are you getting anything out of this? Is this changing your life right now? No adulation, no good jobs, no attaboys, very little feedback. And the thing that I wanted from the work that I put into the sermons wasn't there anymore. My motivation to prep and to be sharp and to be ready and to do well, it wasn't there anymore. And so I kind of walked through this season of lifelessness and didn't really understand what was going on. And honestly, I thought more in that season. It was the first time in my life I asked the question about myself, like, is this really what I want to do? Do I really want to be a pastor for the rest of my life? Because this job's weird, man. But somewhere in there, the Holy Spirit kept working on me. And I don't remember the day or the time. I just know that profoundly it happened kind of coming back from we spent that holiday with Jen's family for a longer time and ended up losing her dad right before the new year. And when we got back from that, there's just this switch. And I just remember, maybe it was the Holy Spirit, I don't know. But I just remember thinking, why don't you just try to help them and not impress them? Why don't you just try to be helpful and not impressive? Why don't you quit worrying about if the sermon is the best sermon that they've ever heard on this particular topic? Why don't you quit stressing yourself out about that and just try to be helpful with the topic or with the passage that's been presented. Just serve God's people. And when I started thinking about it in that way, it was like a switch went off. It was like life got breathed back into my body. It was the joy of being a pastor came back. The desire to prepare and study returned. Before that, the sermon felt like the weekly test that I had to pass. You guys gonna keep paying me? Is this good enough for you? And then after that, it became the thing I was excited about. God, how do I get to help your people this week? How can I encourage the folks this week? How can I serve grace this week? What can I show them this week? I would have never done a sermon like this a couple years ago because this is listy and pointed and boring. But as I looked at the text and what we could learn from it and what we could gain from it, I was convinced that this is the most helpful thing I can do is to say, what does God expect of his leaders? More of you are leaders than you think you are, so what does God expect of us as we lead? And what's our leadership culture going to look like here? It feels like the most helpful thing to do. So where you are in your leadership, both here and in the areas outside of the church where you exert influence? Have you made it about yourself and what that influence can do for you? Or have you made it about how you can use that influence to be helpful to others and serve them? And I don't share that with you to be able to say, look at me, I've arrived at pure motives as a pastor. It's going to be smooth sailing from here. No, I'm sure I'll preach a sermon when I'm 50, if the Lord lets me do it that long, and I will have unraveled all kinds of messiness in my 40s that I need to repent of. I just don't know what they are yet. But to encourage you, if you feel like you're in a dry season in your leadership, if things don't feel like they're going, if the joy that you used to have and the things that God has you do, if that's not there anymore, maybe, maybe he's pruning you and rewiring you to get you to a place where your service isn't about you, it's about the people that you get to help. So when we lead at grace, we lead for the sake of others. We do not lead for the sake of ourselves. The other thing that God asks of his leaders is to lead while clothed in humility. Lead while clothed in humility. He says this down in verse 5. Likewise, when you were younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you. So now he's back talking to everyone. With humility toward one another. For God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble. You know, you guys are smart adults, most of you. And we know what humility is. I don't need to get up here and try to define humility for you in a clever way. You know what it is to be humble. The easiest definition that I've heard that you've heard too is humility is to think, is not to think less of yourself, it's to just think about yourself less. I think that's a good example in humility. Humility isn't to falsely claim that things are not true of you. I have to walk knowing that I'm like off the charts attractive. And for me to deny that is not humble, that's just dishonest. And that's the cross that I have to bear. You have those things you have to be honest about too. But as I thought about humble people, the people in my life who are the most humble, that I want to be more like, the Ron Torrences and the Ginger Gentries of the world. And I think of Jen's dad, John. What are those people who are remarkably humble folks, what do they have in common? I think it's this. I think humility says, I am willing to serve and learn from anyone. The people I know who are the most humble walk through life with this attitude. I am willing to serve anyone. No one is beneath me. No one is too small for me. No one needs to clean up after themselves. I can do it. There is no position. There is no piece of volunteering that I can ascend to where that is too small for me. I'm an elder of the church now. I will not hold babies. No, that's not what humility says. I'm the senior pastor. I deserve all the best things. No, that's dumb. That's not what humility says. I've arrived at this point in my company. I've arrived at this point in my life. I don't have to deal with the small things anymore. Yes, you do, big fella. Because humility says there is no service, there is no act of service that is too small for me. There is no person who is too small for me to serve. And that's the easy one. To me, the harder one is there is, I also have something to learn from everybody. Because I don't know about you, but sometimes it's possible that I can get to thinking I'm pretty smart. I've kind of figured stuff out. And I see somebody who doesn't have as many years or doesn't have the experience, and I see them making these mistakes, and they're mistakes that I probably made too, and I just write them off like I got nothing to learn from them. Or I see people who have their life organized in ways that I would not organize my life. And because of that, I write them off like I have nothing to learn from them. And that's a huge mistake. That's not what humility says. Humility says that the greatest of us can learn from the least of us. That those of us who have the most to offer and the most to share and the most wisdom, that the people in this room who we would all love to hear from on certain issues, those are also the people who think that they can learn something from anybody in this room. So when I think of humility, I think of people who go through life believing, not just trying to convince themselves it's true, but believing that they can serve anyone and learn from anyone. If we maintain those two attitudes, it's going to be hard to go through life arrogantly. Another thing that God asks his leaders to do, and this one's important, is to lead watchfully. To lead watchfully. This is the verse from this passage that you've probably heard before in verse eight. It says, be sober-minded, be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour. A lot of us have probably heard that verse before. Whenever there's a sermon done on the enemy, on Satan, that's usually the go-to verse, is that he prowls around like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour. And so as the leaders of God's church, we are to lead watchfully. And what's interesting to me about this verse and this passage is normally in the past when I've read it or when I've encountered it, you kind of just encounter it and it makes me think of me. Watch myself. Take hold of myself. Just know that the enemy is prowling around and that his schemes will disrupt my life and ruin my life if he can do it, so guard myself. But in the context of the larger passage, it really feels more like he's telling the elders of the church, hey, watch the flock, watch your people, lead watchfully. Know that Satan does not like what's going on here. Know that Satan does not like when families show up here. Know that Satan does not like when new people come here or when folks get more involved. He does not like that. He is not for it. And we as the elders and leaders of the church need to be watchful. And I think of the time I went on safari in South Africa. And you're driving out through the plains and the hills and whatever. And there's the way that all of the dumb Americans look at all the fields. There's a way that we look at it like, oh, look at the rhinos. That's super fun. And there's a way that the tour guide watches the fields. And his eyes are a thousand yards beyond yours. His eyes see all kinds of potential danger, and I don't like the way those elephants are acting over there. I think we might be able to see something over here if we go over there. They're looking at 10,000 things that your eyes can't see and are not trained or affixed to. You think of a captain on a boat that's looking out on the horizon for all the potential dangers and we're just looking at the person skiing in the back, right? That is how we are to be watchful over God's flock. Everybody here is the church attends and we do the things and we interact with lives and we ask questions and how are things going and what's going on with so-and-so and how's your family and I haven't seen in a little while, whatever it is. Those of us who are leaders in the church need to have the thousand, need to be looking out onto the horizon and see all kinds of dangers and evils that are waiting up for us for the sake of the flock. And what I think of the most, to put a point on it, is that old adage that we go back to whenever we talk about this passage. Who does the roaring lion devour? Well, the ones who have fallen away from the flock. The ones who are weak. The ones who are hurt. The ones who are slower. The ones who have wandered off. And so for us as leaders to lead watchfully, we look at the fringes of the church. We notice, listen, listen, listen. We notice when families start to dip in their attendance. I haven't seen you in a few weeks. Leaders, that's a red flag. We need to reach out to them. Hey, how you doing? Everything okay? Do you wanna go grab some lunch to grab coffee? Do you want to grab a beer? That's how we be watchful. We talk to somebody and it doesn't seem like things are super good in their marriage. We got to keep our eyes on that. Whatever it is, they're not coming to church together. It doesn't seem like they're talking very much. I don't know how things are doing. They look like they're stressed. They look like life is hard on them right now. Okay. Then they're on the fringe. They're out there on their own. Leaders. We need to be watchful of that. When families start to disengage from church, it could be that the preaching is terrible. I will accept that as one of the motives. It is more likely that the enemy is driving a wedge in their life. It is more likely that they have things going on under the surface that you don't see on a Sunday morning in the lobby, and that those things are bubbling up in such a way that it's demotivating them to come to church. And they're wandering off and they're on the fringes of the flock, leaders. It can't just be me reaching back out to them and calling them and saying, hey, we missed you. We have collective ownership of that to lead watchfully, seeing the dangers that are approaching people and families before they even see them and actively doing something about those dangers. Lastly, God calls us to lead with consistency. Lead with consistency knowing that at the proper time Jesus will give you rest. Here's what Peter writes. Resist him firm in your faith, starting in verse 9, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen. So Peter says, once you're doing all these things, leading with humility, making it about others and not about yourself, when you're leading watchfully, actively looking over the flock where God has assigned you, once you're doing that, keep doing it. Stand firm. Don't stop. Don't waver. Don't give up. Don't give in. Continue to cling to the faith in weeks like this when it is difficult. Continue to be the light in dark places. Continue to beat back despair in the lives of others. Continue to reach out to other people and bring them back into the fold. Continue to reach out to people when you feel like you are faltering so that they might bring you back into the fold. But stand firm. Stay consistent. Hold on tight. And God, in His goodness and in His grace, will let you rest when it's your time to rest. God in his grace and his goodness will send Jesus for you when it is time to send Jesus for you. But until then, Christians and leaders, we cling to our hope. We serve God's church well. We serve it with humility and we serve it with selflessness. So my encouragement to you is if you are a leader at grace in any capacity, if you become a leader at grace, lead well. Lead with humility. And let's lead as hard as we can, as faithfully as we can, as selflessly and consistently as we can until Jesus says it's time to stop. Let's pray. Father, thank you for this morning. Thank you for these words from Peter. Lord, I pray that you would choose people at grace to put in positions of influence who embody these things, who are humble and who are not self-serving and who are watchful. God, make me these things more and more. Lord, we are so grateful for this place where we can come, where worship is sweet, where we get to see our friends, where we get to be recharged and rejuvenated. So God, we just pray that you would protect this little place, that we would be good stewards of the souls that you entrust to us, that for all the new people who come in, God, we would welcome them with open arms. For the people who have been here, God, we will watch after them and reach out to them. We ask that you would make grace all that you want it to be, and that we would serve you well in the midst of that. In Jesus' name, amen.
