Good morning. My name is Nate. I get to be one of the pastors here. We find ourselves at the end of a series called Known For where we're examining this idea of reputation. What are we known for as individuals? What are our families known for? Last week we talked about what our church is known for, and this week we want to talk about what our faith is known for. And this is a sermon for me that really means a whole lot to me. It's really very important. This is a message that when we set up this series and when I started writing the sermons each week, in the back of my head I wasn't really writing the other sermons. I was thinking about this one and what I felt compelled to say and what I felt needed to be said. When I go to write a sermon, I write down, I just sit down and I just write all of my thoughts that I have until there's one that seems good and then I go with that one, which sometimes doesn't take very much time at all. Sometimes it takes a little bit of time, but I wrote down more stuff for this sermon than I've ever written down for almost any of them, because the reputation of God's church matters very much to me. I love the church. I love this outpost of an eternal kingdom that we get to participate in with our lives. We are, we're told, the ambassadors of Christ to a lost and watching world. And so it is our job to carry that flag well. It is our job to be highly regarded in our culture and in the public square. And how God's children are perceived and how his kingdom on earth, the church, is perceived ought to matter very much to a believer. And so for me as a pastor who's dedicated his life to the church, who loves the church very much, it matters very much how we are perceived. And if we were to ask ourselves, how is Christianity in the American church perceived by our culture, the answer is not great. The answer is that for my lifetime, and for most of your lifetimes, we have been on a slow decline. Where the percentage of people over 60 who attend church and claim a faith has gotten lower and lower, and that's the highest percentage of our population that attends and prioritizes churches until you get down to people under 25 years old, and it's as low as 18% of people that claim of faith and attend church on any sort of regular basis. We are on a slow slide towards a post-Christian culture where the church has lost its position of prominence in our country. And the hard part is it's our fault. It's not them. People leaving church, rejecting church, are people who grew up in it. So what are we doing to make a bad name for our Savior? It's really the question that faces us, and it's an important one. To answer it, if you'll humor me, I would like to do a brief overview of all of Christian history. Also, I'm not kidding. So in the new church, after Jesus died, I almost wore, I used to teach Christian high school, and to make myself feel like more of a teacher, Jen remembers this, I bought a houndstooth blazer, and I wanted to wear it for you, but that thing don't fit, man. That would have been flapping open all day. That would have been bad news. So I couldn't do it, so I went with coral. Some people have called it salmon. I don't know which it is. But here we go. Humor me on this. I will try to move as quickly as possible. And I promise you, I'm getting to a point with this. And another reason I'm sharing this with you is because I'm assuming that most of us in this room are Christians, but that the vast majority of us didn't go to seminary and probably haven't taken a personal interest in exhaustive church history. And a lot of this might be new information for you, and I think it can be very helpful information to you. So the church began, obviously, in Jerusalem at the death of Christ. And then we see Pentecost and Acts. The disciples are the leaders of the church. Saul is converted to Paul and commissioned to plant churches throughout Asia Minor. He does this over four missionary journeys. And we see Christianity begin to flourish in the ancient world under the umbrella of the Roman Empire. Because Christianity claimed that there was a Lord who wasn't the emperor, it was reviled as a rebellious and revolutionary religion. And it was persecuted and attempted to be stamped out at every turn, sometimes really bad under Nero, sometimes a little lighter, but it was consistently persecuted in the early centuries of the church. Incidentally, the church always, always flourishes when it's persecuted and always messes things up when it's in power. We'll see that. So the church begins to flourish and grow and grow in prominence and God is blessing it. And in the midst of this flourishing in 313 AD, an emperor named Constantine decided to legalize Christianity. Many of you probably know that. What you may not know is that he did not legalize Christianity because he was a convert and was favorable towards it. All the evidence points to him continuing in the pagan faith that he claimed before he legalized Christianity. He simply legalized it to ingratiate himself to elements of his empire and political leaders and figures that were close to him whose power he needed so that it would be easier to be the emperor. He married the Christian faith for political expediency while feigning a faith that he didn't really have for the sake of his own political career and efficacy. And I would just like to say that I'm very grateful that only happened in 313 and definitely does not happen in the United States for any reason. So Christianity moves into this place of cultural power and primacy. And in the midst of this, eventually, while Christianity, and it's the Catholic Church, but I'm not picking on the Catholic Church because the Catholic Church was the only church until about 1050 when we had the Great Schism and that born Eastern Orthodoxy and Catholicism. So in that time, what we see is the crumble and the fall of the Roman Empire. And all of Europe is basically made up of Frankish and Germanic clans and tribes and nation states. The only transnational power in this time is the Catholic Church. And so the Pope, most pointed, Pope Gregory, becomes kingmaker. He decides who's going to be king of what tribe. He decides who's going to get promoted. And the Catholic Church decides what all these tribes have to believe and what they're going to think favorably of and what they're not. And so this is really historically the very height of power for the Christian church is the pope as kingmaker, as the most powerful force on the planet, single most powerful person on the planet. And out of this place of great power comes our worst and most egregious sins in history. Comes the Spanish Inquisition, where inquisitors are commissioned to go to towns and suss out the heretics and kill people who claim a Christian faith, they just don't articulate it like all the nuanced ways the Catholic Church insisted that they should, and so they kill them. This is when we started indulgences. Indulgences are some of the greatest evil to me in the history of the church. The church had this doctrine of purgatory, where you were taught that even if you're saved, even if you're going to heaven when you die, that since you've sinned here on earth to differing degrees, you have to pay penance in purgatory. Basically, we got to burn all the bad stuff off of you in purgatory before you can go to heaven. That was the idea. But there was this great system that they invented that's called indulgences. And what they said is you're probably going to burn for that for a little while in between this life and the next. But the more money you give to the church, God actually deposits that to your spiritual account, and you burn less. So this is just keep giving. And then they would tell you we're very sad that your mother just died died and we know you're grieving, but also she's on fire. So the more money you give, the quicker you can put out that flame. And there's this phrase, I'll never forget it. There was a guy who was the right hand of the Pope. I forget what his name was, but he used to go through small towns in Europe to collect money for indulgences. And he would ring the metal coffer and and he would say, for every coin in the coffer rings a soul from purgatory springs. And it is an egregious evil on a poor, illiterate populace. But it also paid for the Vatican City, so... And then the worst of our sins, the Crusades. Raping and pillaging our way across Europe for a holy war in the name of Jesus to try to conquer Jerusalem from the Muslims for what reasons I do not understand. Telling these young men who are again illiterate and uneducated that if they die in this holy war that they will go straight to heaven and skip purgatory altogether. At our time of greatest power, we committed our greatest sins. In the midst of these sins, towards the end of the 1400s, there was a guy named Ulrich Zwingli. He started to ask some questions. He was followed by John Calvin and then ultimately by a guy named Martin Luther, who we probably know, and you may have heard the 95 Theses on the Wittenberg Church door, where he says, hey, this church seems corrupt. I've got some questions. And out of their questions and in the corruption that they saw began the Great Reformation. And so that's when the Protestant church sprung off of the Catholic church. And in that Reformation, that was very necessary. And in asking those questions that did need to be asked, and in holding the powerful accountable, we see a spiritual flourishing again, where we have the Scottish Reformation and the English Reformation and the Swedish Reformation. And all of this was born out of Germany. So there's large reform going on in the German church. And so across Christendom, things start to get better, and churches start to be filled with more grace, and things get less corrupt. And so we kind of start to pick ourselves up again. Except what happens in the midst of this flourishing and this spiritual awakening? Well, Ulrich Zwingli and John Calvin decide that what they need to do is establish a Christian nation state in Geneva where it's going to be this perfect society where all we do is follow God's laws. And if you don't follow God's laws, you're not allowed to live there. And what they do, they killed heretics. John Calvin had one of his closest friends burned alive. He pleaded with the authorities that it could be just beheaded, so it would be a quicker death. But they said, no, we've got to burn him alive for his heresies. He was a believer. John Calvin killed other Christians. Martin Luther was anti-Semitic and was responsible for the death of thousands of Jews, and he would go around commissioning people to kill Baptists. If you would baptize somebody, Martin Luther didn't agree with that, and so he'd just have you killed for your heresy. So at the height of their power, what did they do? They used it to try to get people to behave the way they thought they should behave, and they tanked it. And so Europe, in response to the Reformation and the behavior of the Christians of the Reformation, in response to the behaviors of the Christians from the Catholic Church, wholeheartedly began to reject religion and move away from it. And the church in Europe goes into atrophy. About this time, some people seeking religious freedom from the oppression of Europe come to Jamestown, and they start the American experiment. The American experiment, we found this country on Christian principles, and the church occupies this place of importance in our country. And then the 1700s, we have figures like Jonathan Edwards who led the Great Awakening. And Christianity begins to flourish again in good and wonderful ways, in ways that led to missionary journeys across the world, that led to the church in China and many churches in South Africa or in South America and Central America. There was a good movement of the Spirit that poured out of this great awakening. And then eventually, the church and Christianity moved into this place again of cultural prominence and primacy for all of our lives who are in this room. Christianity has occupied this position of cultural primacy and power where we have a lot of sway in the country in which we live. And I want us to see these historic ebbs and flows because I want us to understand that in the scope of history, and this is very important, that for Christians, cultural primacy always produces corruption, hypocrisy, and abuse. Always. Without fail. In the span of history. And you can take cultural primacy and you can just make that power to make it a little easier. In the span of history, when you put Christians in power as a group over a country or a people, that power always, without fail, produces hypocrisy and corruption and abuse. Always. Now, why is that the case? Well, I think it's largely because when we achieve that power, we start to take our eye off the ball. And we forget the kingdom and we forget what got us there and we just start to focus on maintaining power. Very, very often, almost without fail, what Christians do with that power is we try to make people who don't believe like us behave like us. And when they won't, we punish them. And when it's real bad, we kill them. And I just wonder if in your experience in our American culture, if you could pick out some examples of where Christianity in its place of power in our country produced hypocrisy and corruption and abuse. I'm not going to list any because I'm pretty close to the line already, but I'm pretty sure you can think of them. Those instances of corruption and abuse of power where we leverage everything we can to try to make people who don't believe like us behave like us. How do they make us look in the public square? How do those advance the kingdom we live for? So, if that historic cycle is accurate, how do we make sure we're not a part of it? How can grace make sure that we are not participants in this terrible historical cycle of being persecuted, rising to power in a position of prominence, using that power in ways that are inappropriate, that produce corruption and abuse and hypocrisy, and then watching Christianity fall from prominence. Because let's be honest about where we sit in history. We are on the downside. We have existed in prominence in this country, and now we are on the downside, where based on the statistics I told you at the beginning, where the younger you get in this country, the less likely you are to go to church. We are on the tail end of our cultural dominance. So in this moment in history, as we sit as a church, as you sit as Christians, what do we do? How do we act? How do we respond? What do we admit to and own? And how do we try to chart a path moving forward as Christians within a culture that is beginning to reject us because of the way that we have behaved? Not because of them. What do we do? Well, this will be the least controversial thing I say this morning. We focus on Jesus. And we ask how Jesus engaged with culture. What did he do when he came? Because he entered into a time and place that had its moral bankruptcy, that was rife with oppression, that saw more tragedy than we see, that saw more blatant corruption than what we see. He entered into a world with myriad cultural ills. And when he entered into that world, what did he do about the damaged culture that he saw? Well, how did Jesus interact with culture? He ignored it. He ignored it. He just almost acted as if it weren't there and it didn't matter. I've got some examples of this that I will share with you. The first is in Luke chapter 5, verses 29 through 32. This is when he's calling the disciples at the beginning of his ministry. There's a disciple named Levi that we also know as Matthew. And Levi was a tax collector. And tax collectors in ancient Israel were persona non grata. They were no good because a tax collector is someone who had turned tail on his own people and now worked for the oppressive Roman government and took your money and then a cut of that and then gave the other money to the Roman government. So he was by accounts, a traitor. This was a job that you took and you said, I'm going to be morally bankrupt, but I'm doing it for the money and it's going to be fine. He was that guy. And Jesus, not caring about any of that, calls him to be a disciple. And this is Levi's response to that call. And Levi made him a great feast in his house. And there was a large company of tax collectors and others reclining at table with them. And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples saying, why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners? And Jesus answered them, those who are well have no You can't be, we don't do that. Our type, we are religiously proper. We don't interact with their type. We don't go to their house and have feasts where there's food and beverages. And Jesus says, yeah, but I do because that's who I came for. I actually came to spend time with them. I'm not really that concerned with your cultural norms. I'm going to go love on them because they're the ones who need my love the most. So I'll see you later. Another instance, in the book of John at the beginning, we see Jesus talking to the woman at the well, and maybe we forget sometimes that the woman at the well was a Samaritan. And the Samaritans to the Hebrew were an ethnic cultural mutt. They were unacceptable. And there was wildly accepted and agreed upon racism amongst the Hebrew people that the Samaritans are the worst. It is right and good to hate them. They have intermingled with other countries and other religions. They are not like us. We are better than them. We should disdain them. It is okay. It is rampant, agreed upon racism by God's people, a lot like the late 1860s in the United States. And Jesus, supposed to avoid Samaria, just walks right through it, goes to the well in the middle of the day, encounters a woman who's basically known for her life of what we would think of as sin and impropriety, and has a conversation with her. Part of the conversation goes like this, John chapter 4, verse 9, the Samaritan woman said to him, how is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria? The Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. And Jesus answered her, If you knew the gift of God and who it is that is saying to you, Give me a drink, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water. So he goes to the Samaritan, and she says, Why are you talking to me? You're not supposed to be talking to me. Culturally, this is not allowed. And Jesus says, yeah, I don't care. I'm actually here for you. You're who I came for. I love you. And if you'll ask me the right question, I'll love you forever. I'll offer you living water. Touched by his love, the Samaritan goes back to her village, tells everyone who she's met, brings them all back out to Jesus, and they all convert. And he reaches a Samaritan village that would have culturally never been reached by a Jewish person because of the norms that he was expected to uphold. Another interesting time we see the Samaritans show up in Scripture is when this rich young guy comes up to Jesus in the public square, and he says, I know that the Bible says that I'm supposed to love my neighbor, but can you tell me who is my neighbor? And Jesus tells them a parable of a priest and then a Levite who walks past a dying man on a road to Jericho, And then he says there was a Samaritan that came up. And the Samaritan healed him. Or paid for him and cared for him. Covered his bills at the hotel. Made sure he was squared away. And then he looks at the rich young guy and he says, and who was his neighbor? That is not dissimilar at all from Jesus showing up in Birmingham, Alabama in 1958 and talking with a group of white churchgoers and them asking him, who is our neighbor? And Jesus tells a parable where a black man is the hero and the moral exemplar over the pastor and the doctor that's respected in town. It's noteworthy to me that though this rampant racism was present in his culture, he did not seek a large audience to decry it, nor did he tacitly approve of it. He just called it out in instances where it made sense. Not really caring who was around and what they thought and what the culture expected of him at the time. We see Jesus greatly concerned with the behavior of others, but first he was concerned with loving others. The adulterous woman that's brought to his feet. Caught in the act of adultery. Asked in front of Pharisees if she should be stoned. And Jesus says, let he who is without sin cast the first stone. And then I am convinced began to write the names of ladies in the sand. And all those guys went, oh, okay, see you later. And so he shows her great grace, but does he in that grace approve of the behavior? No. He looks at her and he says, your sins are forgiven. Now go and sin no more. There's another example that I have here that we'll just go through really quickly. Luke 5, 12, there is a leper that came to him. While he was in one of the cities, there came a man full of leprosy. And when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged him, Lord, if you will, you can make me clean. And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, I will be clean. I will be clean. And immediately the leprosy left him. This is a big deal because if you've got leprosy in the ancient world, it was because of a sin that you or your family committed and you deserved it and you deserved the death that you were going to die. So they isolated them into communes where no one of any righteous standing would go. Because it was culturally incorrect to do so. And Jesus didn't care. He went and he healed the lepers. When I look at Jesus' life and I understand that he existed in a culture that had its ills, and I think about what he came to accomplish. Listen, if Jesus wanted to, have you ever thought about this? If Jesus wanted to, he could have come and established a nation state. He had the horses to do it. He could have overthrown the Roman Empire. He could have sat on the throne of David. He could have made Israel the moral exemplar for the whole world. He could have established a nation state and made people behave the right way within that nation state if that's what he really wanted to do. He could have done what Zwingli and Calvin and Luther tried to do. He could have done what the Catholic Church tried to do. He could have done what we in America sometimes tried to do, but he doesn't do that. He establishes a church, an eternal outpost of an eternal kingdom and a temporal world. And he didn't get all caught up in the culture wars of his day. Because Jesus fought kingdom wars, not culture wars. Jesus came to fight for a kingdom, not win over a culture. And he died on the cross to lay the cornerstone, to lay the foundation of that kingdom. And in a little bit, we're going to have communion and we're going to celebrate the establishment of this kingdom in which we get to participate. But if we want to encounter our culture like Jesus does, and if we want to care about the reputation of our faith within our culture, then I would contend very simply that we need to love as Jesus did. And that we need to concern ourselves with the things that concern Jesus. And that we ought not think that it is our job to fight culture wars to try to convince people who don't believe what we believe to behave how we behave. But instead, we build God's kingdom. And we build it the way that Jesus did. He fought for his kingdom one opportunity, conversation, and person at a time. That's what he did. When I say opportunity, sometimes Jesus had ministry opportunities or opportunities to love where he fed 5,000 or he gave a sermon, like the Sermon on the Mount, to thousands of people. And so not every interaction that Jesus had was isolated to the individual, but what my point is, we all have opportunities to minister. We all have opportunities to love. God gives us all a chance to show his love to our neighbor and to people within our culture. And when he does, we should seize it. And so Jesus fought for his kingdom, one opportunity, one conversation, and one person at a time. Very simply, Jesus loved. He didn't seek a bully pulpit in the Sanhedrin and try to convince all the Pharisees that they needed to go to Samaria and do ministry. He just went to Samaria and he did ministry. He didn't argue for time in the synagogue and try to convince them that they should care deeply about the lepers. He just went and loved on the lepers. He didn't enter into a debate in the public square about the validity of racism against the Samaritans. He just set them up as a hero and a parable to make a very clear point to the few people who were around him. It's not as though Jesus doesn't care about bad behavior. He just knows that the right behavior is never going to follow the wrong beliefs. And so as Christians, the most important thing we can do is fight for God's kingdom, which as we defined it in the fall, was to strengthen and add to the souls who are following Jesus. So what can grace do in our culture to make sure that we are not a part of the terrible historical cycle of abusing power and producing corruption and abuse and hypocrisy. I think that we can examine long and hard the culture wars that we feel like we need to fight as Christians. And start wondering what it might look like to fight kingdom wars like Jesus did instead. To fight for individuals and their souls, not principles. We can carefully and prayerfully consider the value of trying to get people who don't believe like us to behave like us. And we can ask, when we do find ourselves in a situation where we can legislate them to behave like we do, does that push them closer to or further away from our Savior? And if it's further away from our Jesus, did we really win anything? Or have we just perpetuated the historical cycle? So Grace, let's be a church that fights for God's kingdom. Let's fight for it one person at a time, one conversation at a time, one opportunity at a time. And if we do that, you know what I think we'll see? In this little outpost of God's eternal kingdom? Revival. Revival in our hearts. Revival in our neighbors. Revival in our friends. Let's pray for that. Father, we love you. We are sorry for making your good name look bad. We are sorry for the times that we, as individuals, have carried your banner poorly. We are sorry for the times that we have been a part of churches that have carried your banner poorly. God, we know that grace has not always displayed you perfectly in our communities, and we know that we will fail you again, but God that we would see it and that we would care and that we would try and that we would be like your son and try to win people to your kingdom one person at a time. God let us see and be very afraid of the potential damage that can be done when we are put in positions of power. Let us hold it well and honorably. Let us honor you in our interactions. And let our biggest priority, God, for everyone that we encounter be that they would know you, that they would love you, and in turn, eventually, they would begin to love others as you love them. Be with us in our small groups this week as we discuss this. Be with us as we drive and we think and we pray and we reflect. And God, for what it's worth, we really want this church to be a place that you're proud of. Would you give us the courage to be that? In Jesus' name, amen.

So in that time, what we see is the crumble and the fall of the Roman Empire. And all of Europe is basically made up of Frankish and Germanic clans and tribes and nation states. The only transnational power in this time is the Catholic Church. And so the Pope, most pointed, Pope Gregory, becomes kingmaker. He decides who's going to be king of what tribe. He decides who's going to get promoted. And the Catholic Church decides what all these tribes have to believe and what they're going to think favorably of and what they're not. And so this is really historically the very height of power for the Christian church is the pope as kingmaker, as the most powerful force on the planet, single most powerful person on the planet. And out of this place of great power comes our worst and most egregious sins in history. Comes the Spanish Inquisition, where inquisitors are commissioned to go to towns and suss out the heretics and kill people who claim a Christian faith, they just don't articulate it like all the nuanced ways the Catholic Church insisted that they should, and so they kill them. This is when we started indulgences. Indulgences are some of the greatest evil to me in the history of the church. The church had this doctrine of purgatory, where you were taught that even if you're saved, even if you're going to heaven when you die, that since you've sinned here on earth to differing degrees, you have to pay penance in purgatory. Basically, we got to burn all the bad stuff off of you in purgatory before you can go to heaven. That was the idea. But there was this great system that they invented that's called indulgences. And what they said is you're probably going to burn for that for a little while in between this life and the next. But the more money you give to the church, God actually deposits that to your spiritual account, and you burn less. So this is just keep giving. And then they would tell you we're very sad that your mother just died died and we know you're grieving, but also she's on fire. So the more money you give, the quicker you can put out that flame. And there's this phrase, I'll never forget it. There was a guy who was the right hand of the Pope. I forget what his name was, but he used to go through small towns in Europe to collect money for indulgences. And he would ring the metal coffer and and he would say, for every coin in the coffer rings a soul from purgatory springs. And it is an egregious evil on a poor, illiterate populace. But it also paid for the Vatican City, so... And then the worst of our sins, the Crusades. Raping and pillaging our way across Europe for a holy war in the name of Jesus to try to conquer Jerusalem from the Muslims for what reasons I do not understand. Telling these young men who are again illiterate and uneducated that if they die in this holy war that they will go straight to heaven and skip purgatory altogether. At our time of greatest power, we committed our greatest sins. In the midst of these sins, towards the end of the 1400s, there was a guy named Ulrich Zwingli. He started to ask some questions. He was followed by John Calvin and then ultimately by a guy named Martin Luther, who we probably know, and you may have heard the 95 Theses on the Wittenberg Church door, where he says, hey, this church seems corrupt. I've got some questions. And out of their questions and in the corruption that they saw began the Great Reformation. And so that's when the Protestant church sprung off of the Catholic church. And in that Reformation, that was very necessary. And in asking those questions that did need to be asked, and in holding the powerful accountable, we see a spiritual flourishing again, where we have the Scottish Reformation and the English Reformation and the Swedish Reformation. And all of this was born out of Germany. So there's large reform going on in the German church. And so across Christendom, things start to get better, and churches start to be filled with more grace, and things get less corrupt. And so we kind of start to pick ourselves up again. Except what happens in the midst of this flourishing and this spiritual awakening? Well, Ulrich Zwingli and John Calvin decide that what they need to do is establish a Christian nation state in Geneva where it's going to be this perfect society where all we do is follow God's laws. And if you don't follow God's laws, you're not allowed to live there. And what they do, they killed heretics. John Calvin had one of his closest friends burned alive. He pleaded with the authorities that it could be just beheaded, so it would be a quicker death. But they said, no, we've got to burn him alive for his heresies. He was a believer. John Calvin killed other Christians. Martin Luther was anti-Semitic and was responsible for the death of thousands of Jews, and he would go around commissioning people to kill Baptists. If you would baptize somebody, Martin Luther didn't agree with that, and so he'd just have you killed for your heresy. So at the height of their power, what did they do? They used it to try to get people to behave the way they thought they should behave, and they tanked it. And so Europe, in response to the Reformation and the behavior of the Christians of the Reformation, in response to the behaviors of the Christians from the Catholic Church, wholeheartedly began to reject religion and move away from it. And the church in Europe goes into atrophy. About this time, some people seeking religious freedom from the oppression of Europe come to Jamestown, and they start the American experiment. The American experiment, we found this country on Christian principles, and the church occupies this place of importance in our country. And then the 1700s, we have figures like Jonathan Edwards who led the Great Awakening. And Christianity begins to flourish again in good and wonderful ways, in ways that led to missionary journeys across the world, that led to the church in China and many churches in South Africa or in South America and Central America. There was a good movement of the Spirit that poured out of this great awakening. And then eventually, the church and Christianity moved into this place again of cultural prominence and primacy for all of our lives who are in this room. Christianity has occupied this position of cultural primacy and power where we have a lot of sway in the country in which we live. And I want us to see these historic ebbs and flows because I want us to understand that in the scope of history, and this is very important, that for Christians, cultural primacy always produces corruption, hypocrisy, and abuse. Always. Without fail. In the span of history. And you can take cultural primacy and you can just make that power to make it a little easier. In the span of history, when you put Christians in power as a group over a country or a people, that power always, without fail, produces hypocrisy and corruption and abuse. Always. Now, why is that the case? Well, I think it's largely because when we achieve that power, we start to take our eye off the ball. And we forget the kingdom and we forget what got us there and we just start to focus on maintaining power. Very, very often, almost without fail, what Christians do with that power is we try to make people who don't believe like us behave like us. And when they won't, we punish them. And when it's real bad, we kill them. And I just wonder if in your experience in our American culture, if you could pick out some examples of where Christianity in its place of power in our country produced hypocrisy and corruption and abuse. I'm not going to list any because I'm pretty close to the line already, but I'm pretty sure you can think of them. Those instances of corruption and abuse of power where we leverage everything we can to try to make people who don't believe like us behave like us. How do they make us look in the public square? How do those advance the kingdom we live for? So, if that historic cycle is accurate, how do we make sure we're not a part of it? How can grace make sure that we are not participants in this terrible historical cycle of being persecuted, rising to power in a position of prominence, using that power in ways that are inappropriate, that produce corruption and abuse and hypocrisy, and then watching Christianity fall from prominence. Because let's be honest about where we sit in history. We are on the downside. We have existed in prominence in this country, and now we are on the downside, where based on the statistics I told you at the beginning, where the younger you get in this country, the less likely you are to go to church. We are on the tail end of our cultural dominance. So in this moment in history, as we sit as a church, as you sit as Christians, what do we do? How do we act? How do we respond? What do we admit to and own? And how do we try to chart a path moving forward as Christians within a culture that is beginning to reject us because of the way that we have behaved? Not because of them. What do we do? Well, this will be the least controversial thing I say this morning. We focus on Jesus. And we ask how Jesus engaged with culture. What did he do when he came? Because he entered into a time and place that had its moral bankruptcy, that was rife with oppression, that saw more tragedy than we see, that saw more blatant corruption than what we see. He entered into a world with myriad cultural ills. And when he entered into that world, what did he do about the damaged culture that he saw? Well, how did Jesus interact with culture? He ignored it. He ignored it. He just almost acted as if it weren't there and it didn't matter. I've got some examples of this that I will share with you. The first is in Luke chapter 5, verses 29 through 32. This is when he's calling the disciples at the beginning of his ministry. There's a disciple named Levi that we also know as Matthew. And Levi was a tax collector. And tax collectors in ancient Israel were persona non grata. They were no good because a tax collector is someone who had turned tail on his own people and now worked for the oppressive Roman government and took your money and then a cut of that and then gave the other money to the Roman government. So he was by accounts, a traitor. This was a job that you took and you said, I'm going to be morally bankrupt, but I'm doing it for the money and it's going to be fine. He was that guy. And Jesus, not caring about any of that, calls him to be a disciple. And this is Levi's response to that call. And Levi made him a great feast in his house. And there was a large company of tax collectors and others reclining at table with them. And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled at his disciples saying, why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners? And Jesus answered them, those who are well have no You can't be, we don't do that. Our type, we are religiously proper. We don't interact with their type. We don't go to their house and have feasts where there's food and beverages. And Jesus says, yeah, but I do because that's who I came for. I actually came to spend time with them. I'm not really that concerned with your cultural norms. I'm going to go love on them because they're the ones who need my love the most. So I'll see you later. Another instance, in the book of John at the beginning, we see Jesus talking to the woman at the well, and maybe we forget sometimes that the woman at the well was a Samaritan. And the Samaritans to the Hebrew were an ethnic cultural mutt. They were unacceptable. And there was wildly accepted and agreed upon racism amongst the Hebrew people that the Samaritans are the worst. It is right and good to hate them. They have intermingled with other countries and other religions. They are not like us. We are better than them. We should disdain them. It is okay. It is rampant, agreed upon racism by God's people, a lot like the late 1860s in the United States. And Jesus, supposed to avoid Samaria, just walks right through it, goes to the well in the middle of the day, encounters a woman who's basically known for her life of what we would think of as sin and impropriety, and has a conversation with her. Part of the conversation goes like this, John chapter 4, verse 9, the Samaritan woman said to him, how is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria? The Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. And Jesus answered her, If you knew the gift of God and who it is that is saying to you, Give me a drink, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water. So he goes to the Samaritan, and she says, Why are you talking to me? You're not supposed to be talking to me. Culturally, this is not allowed. And Jesus says, yeah, I don't care. I'm actually here for you. You're who I came for. I love you. And if you'll ask me the right question, I'll love you forever. I'll offer you living water. Touched by his love, the Samaritan goes back to her village, tells everyone who she's met, brings them all back out to Jesus, and they all convert. And he reaches a Samaritan village that would have culturally never been reached by a Jewish person because of the norms that he was expected to uphold. Another interesting time we see the Samaritans show up in Scripture is when this rich young guy comes up to Jesus in the public square, and he says, I know that the Bible says that I'm supposed to love my neighbor, but can you tell me who is my neighbor? And Jesus tells them a parable of a priest and then a Levite who walks past a dying man on a road to Jericho, And then he says there was a Samaritan that came up. And the Samaritan healed him. Or paid for him and cared for him. Covered his bills at the hotel. Made sure he was squared away. And then he looks at the rich young guy and he says, and who was his neighbor? That is not dissimilar at all from Jesus showing up in Birmingham, Alabama in 1958 and talking with a group of white churchgoers and them asking him, who is our neighbor? And Jesus tells a parable where a black man is the hero and the moral exemplar over the pastor and the doctor that's respected in town. It's noteworthy to me that though this rampant racism was present in his culture, he did not seek a large audience to decry it, nor did he tacitly approve of it. He just called it out in instances where it made sense. Not really caring who was around and what they thought and what the culture expected of him at the time. We see Jesus greatly concerned with the behavior of others, but first he was concerned with loving others. The adulterous woman that's brought to his feet. Caught in the act of adultery. Asked in front of Pharisees if she should be stoned. And Jesus says, let he who is without sin cast the first stone. And then I am convinced began to write the names of ladies in the sand. And all those guys went, oh, okay, see you later. And so he shows her great grace, but does he in that grace approve of the behavior? No. He looks at her and he says, your sins are forgiven. Now go and sin no more. There's another example that I have here that we'll just go through really quickly. Luke 5, 12, there is a leper that came to him. While he was in one of the cities, there came a man full of leprosy. And when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged him, Lord, if you will, you can make me clean. And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, I will be clean. I will be clean. And immediately the leprosy left him. This is a big deal because if you've got leprosy in the ancient world, it was because of a sin that you or your family committed and you deserved it and you deserved the death that you were going to die. So they isolated them into communes where no one of any righteous standing would go. Because it was culturally incorrect to do so. And Jesus didn't care. He went and he healed the lepers. When I look at Jesus' life and I understand that he existed in a culture that had its ills, and I think about what he came to accomplish. Listen, if Jesus wanted to, have you ever thought about this? If Jesus wanted to, he could have come and established a nation state. He had the horses to do it. He could have overthrown the Roman Empire. He could have sat on the throne of David. He could have made Israel the moral exemplar for the whole world. He could have established a nation state and made people behave the right way within that nation state if that's what he really wanted to do. He could have done what Zwingli and Calvin and Luther tried to do. He could have done what the Catholic Church tried to do. He could have done what we in America sometimes tried to do, but he doesn't do that. He establishes a church, an eternal outpost of an eternal kingdom and a temporal world. And he didn't get all caught up in the culture wars of his day. Because Jesus fought kingdom wars, not culture wars. Jesus came to fight for a kingdom, not win over a culture. And he died on the cross to lay the cornerstone, to lay the foundation of that kingdom. And in a little bit, we're going to have communion and we're going to celebrate the establishment of this kingdom in which we get to participate. But if we want to encounter our culture like Jesus does, and if we want to care about the reputation of our faith within our culture, then I would contend very simply that we need to love as Jesus did. And that we need to concern ourselves with the things that concern Jesus. And that we ought not think that it is our job to fight culture wars to try to convince people who don't believe what we believe to behave how we behave. But instead, we build God's kingdom. And we build it the way that Jesus did. He fought for his kingdom one opportunity, conversation, and person at a time. That's what he did. When I say opportunity, sometimes Jesus had ministry opportunities or opportunities to love where he fed 5,000 or he gave a sermon, like the Sermon on the Mount, to thousands of people. And so not every interaction that Jesus had was isolated to the individual, but what my point is, we all have opportunities to minister. We all have opportunities to love. God gives us all a chance to show his love to our neighbor and to people within our culture. And when he does, we should seize it. And so Jesus fought for his kingdom, one opportunity, one conversation, and one person at a time. Very simply, Jesus loved. He didn't seek a bully pulpit in the Sanhedrin and try to convince all the Pharisees that they needed to go to Samaria and do ministry. He just went to Samaria and he did ministry. He didn't argue for time in the synagogue and try to convince them that they should care deeply about the lepers. He just went and loved on the lepers. He didn't enter into a debate in the public square about the validity of racism against the Samaritans. He just set them up as a hero and a parable to make a very clear point to the few people who were around him. It's not as though Jesus doesn't care about bad behavior. He just knows that the right behavior is never going to follow the wrong beliefs. And so as Christians, the most important thing we can do is fight for God's kingdom, which as we defined it in the fall, was to strengthen and add to the souls who are following Jesus. So what can grace do in our culture to make sure that we are not a part of the terrible historical cycle of abusing power and producing corruption and abuse and hypocrisy. I think that we can examine long and hard the culture wars that we feel like we need to fight as Christians. And start wondering what it might look like to fight kingdom wars like Jesus did instead. To fight for individuals and their souls, not principles. We can carefully and prayerfully consider the value of trying to get people who don't believe like us to behave like us. And we can ask, when we do find ourselves in a situation where we can legislate them to behave like we do, does that push them closer to or further away from our Savior? And if it's further away from our Jesus, did we really win anything? Or have we just perpetuated the historical cycle? So Grace, let's be a church that fights for God's kingdom. Let's fight for it one person at a time, one conversation at a time, one opportunity at a time. And if we do that, you know what I think we'll see? In this little outpost of God's eternal kingdom? Revival. Revival in our hearts. Revival in our neighbors. Revival in our friends. Let's pray for that. Father, we love you. We are sorry for making your good name look bad. We are sorry for the times that we, as individuals, have carried your banner poorly. We are sorry for the times that we have been a part of churches that have carried your banner poorly. God, we know that grace has not always displayed you perfectly in our communities, and we know that we will fail you again, but God that we would see it and that we would care and that we would try and that we would be like your son and try to win people to your kingdom one person at a time. God let us see and be very afraid of the potential damage that can be done when we are put in positions of power. Let us hold it well and honorably. Let us honor you in our interactions. And let our biggest priority, God, for everyone that we encounter be that they would know you, that they would love you, and in turn, eventually, they would begin to love others as you love them. Be with us in our small groups this week as we discuss this. Be with us as we drive and we think and we pray and we reflect. And God, for what it's worth, we really want this church to be a place that you're proud of. Would you give us the courage to be that? In Jesus' name, amen.

Well, good morning and happy Father's Day. My name is Nate. I get to be the pastor here. As I think about dads and wishing people happy Father's Day, I really think of two groups of people most of all. To those of you who are expectant fathers, this is your first kind of official, unofficial Father's Day. Boy, that is exciting. So good for you guys. I think of y'all today and I'm very excited and hopeful for y'all. And then I also think of those for whom Father's Day is hard because while everyone else celebrates their dad, you just miss yours. And that's hard too. So I'm sorry about that. And I'm praying specifically for you today. This is not going to look anything like a Father's Day sermon. As a matter of fact, I would even tell you that this isn't even a sermon, okay? A sermon is designed to teach you the Bible and point you to Jesus, point you to God. That's really what a sermon is. This is more of a message. This is more of just something that as your pastor, I want to communicate to our church. So I would also say this, that this morning is unique. It's different. We're pausing from the series that we've been in. We've been doing a series called One Hit Wonders, and we're taking a break from that this morning. And I have a special message, some things that I want to communicate with you. In light of that, I would tell you that this morning is for the partners of grace. If you don't know what that means and why I'm saying partners of grace, it's because at grace we like to say that we have partners, not members, because in membership there is this attitude of rights and privileges. I'm a member now. What do I get to enjoy? What rights are bestowed upon me? But partnership is a sense of ownership. I'm partnering with this organization. I'm taking ownership of the success of this place. What can I do? How can I ply my hand to move it forward? So we say at Grace that members tend to consume and partners tend to contribute. So we have partners, not members. And so this morning is for the partners of Grace. Which means that if you're here, your dad drug you here, you're visiting, you've been kicking the tires, you've been watching online, you wouldn't yet call Grace home, then I have good news for you. You picked a great Sunday. Because this doesn't apply to you. You don't have to do any of the stuff that I say. All right. You had, you feel no guilt. You feel no shame. You feel no sense of compulsion. You don't have to worry about it. You just kind of sit back and take it in. And you also kind of get a peek behind the curtain to decide if this is the kind of place that you want to be involved with. So please know if you don't call grace home, if you don't consider yourself a partner of grace, and if you're thinking to yourself, gosh, am I a partner? Listen, I always say a partner is what a partner does, all right? So I don't know about official classes and things and anointed and stuff. If you act like a partner, you're a partner. So if you consider yourself one, you are. If you don't, then you're not, okay. Now, if you're not, just take it in. Okay. The things that I'm about to say, I'm not saying to try to compel you to do anything. You just enjoy it. For the partners of grace, I wanted to take a Sunday and talk to specifically you, whether you're here in person, whether you're watching online or you catch up later this week, because there's just some things that have been on my heart, and I've been thinking through, gosh, how do I address those things? How do I share with the church about those things? And as I began to think and pray through that, I had a couple key conversations that kind of, they didn't intend to do it, but it pointed me in this direction, and I thought, I just want to take a Sunday and talk to the partners of grace. Kind of a State of the Union address, as it were. The State of Grace. Carly did a great job throwing that together last minute. Good job, Carly. And really, my desire to talk to you guys this morning as partners comes from this question that I get all the time. I get this question from people who love grace ask me this question all the time. Whenever we get one-on-one time in the lobby or I see you through the week or we hang out or whatever it is, at some point or another, people who care about grace always lean in and they ask me this question. How's grace doing? How's grace doing? That's what they want to know. A lot of you guys have asked me that. How are we doing? How's it looking on Sunday morning? What's it like in there? How's grace? And it's a fair question, right? Because here's the thing. Nobody really knows. We've been in a pandemic for 18 months. We were at this all-time high in February 2020, and then we just stopped meeting for 15 months, right? And listen, nobody knows how Grace is doing. I make the joke with other pastors. I've heard them say it too. I have no idea who goes to my church. I have no clue. I think of people every week that I haven't seen in 16 months, and I'm like, gosh, I don't think I've seen them at all. And I'll ask after them. I'll ask Erin. Erin's our children's pastor. She knows everything about everybody in the whole church. So I usually ask Erin, Erin, the sons and sisters still go here? Oh yeah, they're good. I was talking to them last week. They're still engaged. They just haven't come back yet for, you know, X, Y, Z. And there's all kinds of good reasons out there and that's fine. But it's good for me to know that they still call grace home. But the reality is, it's a fair question because it's difficult to know how is the church doing. So I wanted to let you know that we're doing pretty darn good. Grace is doing pretty well. I'm pretty proud of us. This last 16 months has been hard, man. It's been hard on a church. It's been hard on pastors, but it hasn't been as hard on this pastor because you guys are great. I think maybe the thing I might be most proud of about our little church is the unity that we've displayed in this last year. We've faced a pandemic together. We faced COVID together. And you guys were keeping up with it with all those addresses I did. I'll do little videos in my office and send it out to the church. Hey, here's how we're going to handle this. It'll hearten you to know that I have friends who don't go to the church that I used to work with at my other church who now make fun of me for those videos. Every time I send out a video, it shows up on their Facebook feed and I get texts with them making fun of me for them. So that's a thing that's going on in my life. So I've sent out a lot of those. I'd like to be done so my friends will quit making fun of me. But in every one of those videos, when I have to say, hey, we're going to come back in person. Hey, these are going to be, this is the caution that we're going to observe in the room. Hey, we still need to wear masks. Some people need to, some people don't. Hey, this is how we're going to sit. This is how it's going to be. I've known with every video, the elders have known with every decision that we've made that there's going to be some people who aren't happy with it and some people who are. And to watch a church full of people who at some point or another in this last year have been unhappy with one of those decisions, still come here and still call grace home and still love this place and still believe in what God is doing here and still trusting us. That's pretty great. We're a pretty darn unified church in a time when it would be really easy to start being a fragmented church. And it's not just COVID, right? This last, during the pandemic, for whatever reason, it felt like things came to a head politically, and our country is more divided and entrenched politically than it's ever been. We've walked through that with people on both sides of the aisle in unity. Racial reconciliation was thrust into the forefront of the national conversation in a way that I would argue it hasn't been since the 60s. And yet we remain strong. We've been unified this last year as a church, and it heartens me, and I think is maybe the most important thing that we could say about ourselves, that we still love Jesus, we still love each other, and we still love this place. I've been heartened to see momentum building on Sunday mornings. Every week a a few more people come back. Every week, I meet some new people who have been watching us online, who have come back again. Every week, I get here really early in the morning, earlier than I should because I don't want to mess up my sermons. I get here, and then I sit in my office, and I kind of slowly watch the parking lot fill up. And I kind of, who's going to come this week? Who do I get to see? Whose neck do I get to hug? I got to see Miss Ginger Gentry this morning. She came back. Oh, my gosh. It was so great. And I wonder at what's going to happen, right? And every week, it feels like a little bit of momentum gets picked up, and every week, the room feels like it's getting a little bit more full, even here in the middle of the summer. And I think that we could be doing better about that. I'm going to talk about that here in a little bit, but every week I feel a little bit of sense of grace kind of coming back to life. And if we think about coming back to normal, I don't think we're going to see February 2020 for a long time and I'm not worried about it. February 2020 was an all-time high for Grace Riley, and then we stopped meeting. So I'm not worried about that. I'm excited to see what the new normal is going to be, and I think we're going to see it in September. I think what we have in September is what we're going to be, just so you guys know where my thinking is on that. But I've been kind of anxious to see Grace kind of come back to life. We're doing incredible in our kids' ministry. Our rooms are full. I don't know if you know this. Our kids' ministry rooms, they're full like every week. When we had to take out chairs to meet and be able to socially distance, we took a room up in there with all the chairs. And about a month ago, Erin came to me and she was like, yo, you gotta get your chairs out of my room. Like, they gotta get out of there. I need space. I need this room. Our children's space is filled up every week. Our small groups have continued to grow. Our small groups have continued to meet and graft in new people. We've actually added to our small groups rather than detracting from them in a time when we can't even meet together for a large period of time. Many of you know that right as we went into the pandemic that we did a campaign because we believe that it's time for grace to go home. We believe that it's time for grace to have permanent roots in the community that we love so much. And so we pledged $1.5 million to that end. And in a year, when we didn't even need a building, we've raised nearly a million dollars already for a building that we think that we will need one day. I think that's amazing. And we haven't even talked about it. The chair of the campaign committee emailed the elders and said, just keep doing the nothing that you're doing because it seems to be working really well. And we have. I think we're going to crest a million dollars in September thereabouts and we'll let the church know about that and we'll make this final push to February when the campaign will officially be over. But all those things are going well. And I think that the pandemic has been hard on every church in the country. And the pastors that I talk to, it's a struggle. But I think for us, for Grace, we're doing very well as a church. I also think that there's some areas of the church that need our attention. I think there's some areas of the church that our partners need to focus on. And I want to talk to you about those areas. I think we've got some work to do, some parts that are maybe broken down a little, and I think it's time to get to work and to fix them. To talk about those areas, I want to share with you a ministry principle that I learned years ago. I learned this, I don't know where, but somewhere back in church world, somebody taught this to me and it stuck with me, and so I'm going to teach it to you. If you have a Bible, you can turn to Luke chapter 5. We're going to look at verses 1 through 6. This little interaction, we're going to focus in on one part of it and kind of use that for the ministry principle that is going to apply to the whole church today. But we find it in Luke chapter 5. Steve is going to be mad at me. I'm reading out of the King James Version. You're going to see the English Standard Version on the screen, so it's not going to make much sense. But this is my dad's Bible. I keep it in my office. And I thought it would be pretty good to preach out of my dad's Bible on Father's Day because I love that guy. So bear with me. If you're mad about this, shove it. All right. I didn't mean that for Steve. Steve, I love you. I don't know where you are. I didn't mean that for you. Oh, no. All right. Luke 5. And Simon answered, said unto him, And when they had done this, they enclosed a great multitude of lake, and the people are pressing on him, so much so that he's kind of like backing into the water just to get some space. So he looks and he sees two boats and he sees the fishermen, the owners of the boats, washing their nets. And he asks them, can we get in this boat and can you push off a little bit so I can get some space? And then he finishes teaching. And then he says, hey, go throw your nets out there. There's going to be a big catch. And Simon, who we know him as Peter, says, we've been toiling all night long. We've been out there all night. Like, we're done. We just did the night shift. We're finished up. And Jesus says, no, go ahead and throw them in the water again. And Simon Peter says, all right, fine. And he goes and he throws his net back into the same place where they've been fishing all along, catching nothing for hours on end. And then all of a sudden their nets are filled so full that they begin to break. And they have to call over, if you read the verses following, they have to call over some other guys in the boats and say, can you help us with this catch? Now what I want us to focus on in this story is this principle that was taught to me years ago, that when Jesus looks at Simon Peter, who is later to become a disciple, when Jesus looks at the disciples for the first time, they're washing their nets. This is a thing that fishermen have to do. Another way to think about this is mending the nets, because when you go fish for a night, you get debris in the nets. You get stuff in there that could cut the nets. You get stuff in there that could clog it. You get things in there that could tangle it up. So you've got to do the tedious work. Can you imagine how annoying it would be to take a net that's been used over and over again all night long, a huge fishing net, and spread it out and tediously undo all the knots and tediously mend it, grab new thread and reattach it and weave it back in there and care for these nets and wash them and get them ready for the next time. But listen, what those fishermen knew was if they don't mend the nets, if they don't prep them, they won't be ready for the catch. So from this, I've learned the ministry principle that we have to mend the nets to prepare for the movement of God. I've known as a pastor that if we're going to prepare for the movement of God, we have to mend the nets. We've got to get ready for the catch. This is actually a biblical principle. There's a verse I have highlighted in the Old Testament that says, I am the ax and God is the one who hews me. And so I have a note in my Bible, stay sharp, be ready. We don't know when the father is going to pick us up to use us for his will, but let's be ready when he does. Simon Peter had no idea that Jesus was about to tell him to cast his nets out and have the biggest catch of his fishing career. He didn't know that was about to come, yet he was still tediously preparing the nets for the catch. And so what I know about ministry and about church is, if we want to be ready for the work of the Lord, for God's movement, then we have to mend our nets and prepare for the catch. The first time I really felt this impressed upon me, it was a principle I've been familiar with for years, but the first time I really felt like God pressed this on me was actually in this room. In the summer of 2017, I got here in April of that year. In the summer of 2017, I was in this room during the day and I was praying, as I'm known to do on occasion. And I was just pacing around and praying for the church. And I felt God impress upon me. I'm not going to say speak to me. I'm not a God speaks to me guy. I get scared when people start claiming this just as a disclaimer. But as clearly as I've ever heard God in my life, I felt him say, mend the nets. Mend the nets. Get ready. There's a catch coming. Get things in order. Which was a tall task. Because at the time, if you were here, you know, we didn't have a staff. We didn't have a reliable microphone that I could preach from for an entire sermon. It used to cut out all the time. I literally yelled my first Christmas sermon ever at you guys because my mic cut out halfway through it. We didn't know if our songs were going to work. I didn't know if ProPresenter was going to pull up on the computer. All of our ministries were in disarray. There was a lot of net mending to do. And it didn't seem like at the time we were a church of like a hundred and it really didn't feel like anything big was about to happen, but I felt like God impressed upon me, hey, mend the nets, get ready. And I can tell you that he told us to do that because he had a catch prepared for grace. The first time I stepped foot in this room was in February of 2017. I was being interviewed to be the senior pastor. There was 96 souls in this room. Remember, I counted twice. In February of 2020, the last time we were normal, we averaged 335 people in this room every Sunday. That doesn't count the record number of about 45 kids a week that we were running. God brought a catch. He had me, he had us mend the nets for the reason. I'm not the only one that was working to mend the nets. I was just the only one who was using that phrasing in my head to get ready for what God was going to bring. And so now as we sit here in 2021, I feel the Lord pressing upon us again that we need to mend the nets, that we need to get ready, that we need to prepare for the catch that he is about to bring us. Except this time, I don't want to be the only one that's thinking about it. This time, I don't want to be the only one that's using that language. I want our partners to use that language too and let us build the nets together. I think right now in 2021, we need a church full of net menders. We need a church full of partners to work alongside and to get ready for what God is about to do. Why do I feel like God's about to do something here? First of all, I think we're incredibly strong as a church. I think that we're doing incredibly well coming out of a pandemic. I'm very proud of Grace. I'm not lying to you or exaggerating to you when I tell you that every week that we meet in person, I meet somebody who is here for the first time. I meet somebody, I have a conversation that goes something like this. I see a face I don't recognize in the lobby or in one of the seats because visitors always come in early, so I can kind of be in here and say hey to them. They don't have anything else to do. And I'll walk up to them. Hey, I'm Nate. It's nice to meet you. And they say, yeah, we know. We've been watching you online. It happens every week. Every week new people come. Every week you're inviting your friends as things open up again. Every week God brings us more families. I don't know if you know this, but on Mother's Day, we did a child dedication. It had been a year since we did one, so it was a lot. We dedicated eight children that day from nine different families. Now, some of y'all might not know this, but before we were Grace Raleigh, we were Grace Community Church. In December of 2017, we changed our name to Grace Raleigh. And do you understand, do you know that of the nine families that dedicated children on Mother's Day of this year, eight of them have only ever attended Grace Raleigh? Eight of them God has brought to us in the last three years, three, four years. We are growing like crazy in that area of the church. God is doing a thing. And we've got a group of 20-somethings. They're about to start getting pregnant too, and they're going to just add to the trouble. When we go back to normal, when things open back up, I think there's a chance we might have to go to two services in the fall. I think people are ready and chomping at the bit. I think people are ready to start meeting in person with their small groups again. I can feel, you can feel our culture just yearning for normal. And I think a big part of that is church. So I think God's about to do big things here. Even more than that, just the reality of this, this is long-term thinking, but while we're here, we already have a million dollars in the bank ready to buy a building when God presents an opportunity. When we set down permanent roots, when we have a place, when we have a building, that's going to bring some people. That's going to bring some tire kickers. Y'all are going to get excited about grace and be willing to put up with my sermons again and start inviting your friends to this thing that's happening. We need to get ready, guys. Somebody was asking me, a dear friend of mine who's a partner here, we went out to lunch and he just kind of said, hey, what's the vision of grace right now? Like it kind of feels like we just kind of go week to week. We're just kind of going along, maybe hoping for normal again. Like what's the vision of grace? Like what are we doing? And I thought about it for a while. And I thought, gosh, I'm not floating along. The staff's not floating along. The elders, maybe. But the rest of us, we're not floating along. I felt like I'm doing everything I can. I'm fighting and scratching and clawing for this place. Every week I want to see who comes. Every week when somebody does come, I wonder are they going to come back consistently or are they just dipping their toe in and then we'll see you in a month. I wonder when is this place going to come alive again. Every week I'm trying to preach my little heart out to bring people back, to give you something worth showing up to. Every week Steve's doing the best he can to lead us in worship with who shows up in the room. And so I feel like we're fighting like crazy for this place, but it makes sense to me that someone who comes on a weekly basis might not know that because I don't tell you. So I'm telling you, let's mend the nets. Let's get ready. So it makes sense to ask, what does a net mender do? All right, Nate, I'm in, fine. What are you asking of me? How do we mend nets? Well, the first thing we do is we prioritize Sunday morning attendance. We prioritize coming to church on Sunday. Now, this is honestly a thing I never wanted to preach about as a pastor. Because when I wasn't the senior pastor, I always thought it was real self-serving for the senior pastor to do the sermon where he guilts you into Sunday morning attendance. And I never really appreciated it. And so I've intentionally gone in the other direction, even at times making fun of the idea of coming to church on Sunday. I think it's possible that I've made the joke that if I didn't get paid to be here on a holiday weekend, I wouldn't be here either. But what I'm coming to realize is that I've really misled you in our attitude towards Sunday morning attendance. I've always had the attitude about people coming on Sunday that we, the staff, and the volunteers that make up the Sunday morning, we're going to do the best job we can to make it worth it for you to come here on Sunday. We're going to do the best job we can so that when you come on Sunday, you go home and you go, I'm glad I came. And my thought is, if we don't do that for you, then you're not going to come. So what's the point of trying to guilt you if you're not getting anything out of it anyways? And I still believe that that's true. And I still believe that the onus is on us to make it worth it, to get the family up and to come and to be a part of church. But I've also noticed this about our thinking about attendance. And this is really what I want to mention to you guys. I think it's really easy to think about the decision of whether or not to attend church. Isolated. As if it only affects you or your family. Do you want to go to church this Sunday? I don't know, I'm kind of tired. It just affects us, right? It just affects me. It doesn't really have any impact on anybody else. It's just a question for me. And I think that the pandemic and online church for a while has only exasperated that mindset. Because now it's become a thing that I can watch online. I can take part in church at the beach. And I'm still good. I'm still doing my Jesus thing. I'm still participating. I'm watching. I'm listening later in the week. And that's good. That's better than nothing. But I think increasingly the decision to attend church has become one that we believe is about ourselves and whether or not I want to consume the product that's being presented to me on Sunday morning. That sounds like member talking, doesn't it? Sounds like a consumer mindset. And that's hard for me to say because that's not what I do. If you've been here since I got here, you've been here with me for four years. I never talk down to the church. I never set myself up as moral exemplar. I never bring conviction on a Sunday morning that I don't sit in with you. So my part in this is how I've perpetuated the mindset about attendance, and I'm sorry for that. But I do believe that I have seen a more consumeristic approach to whether or not we're going to attend church on Sunday morning, if it fits into my schedule, if I'm not doing anything else, if we're not busy, if the kids aren't crazy, believing that that decision only affects you. But what I would impress upon you this morning is that no, it doesn't. The way that I want us to begin to think about church attendance is just with the layer of thinking. This is all I'm asking for. You're not asking me to cancel trips and make any new commitments. I'm just asking you to think about attendance in this way. Understand that your decision about whether or not to come to church on a Sunday morning impacts the whole church. It impacts everyone. It's not just about us and our families. And you know this to be true intuitively, right? When you show up on a Sunday morning and it's full in here, whoa, look at this. People commenting out in the lobby. Well, you really brought them in today. You really packed it out. People are excited. You know that you get excited when people are in the room. You know you get excited when there's energy in this room. You know. If you were here when we went to two services, you know that the hardest part about going to two services is sitting in here with the other 35 people in the 11 o'clock service. That stinks, man. Ain't nobody want to do that. And I know that people are curious about this. I know that people online want to know how many people in the room. How does it feel in there? I got comments that people, when we first started coming back in person, that people would appreciate when the camera person would kind of pan back so they could like see, are my friends there? Like, who's there? Who's in the room? How much energy? What's going on in there? And there was some Sundays when I would go to that camera person, I would say, hey, listen, we don't need to pan back today, okay? We'll just keep this, just we 25, okay? Just stay nice and tight, just zoomed. You know that when we attend, it adds energy to this place. That's important as we seek to rebuild, as we seek to mend nets. You know if you've brought a friend, if you've invited a couple or a family to come with you, and they show up and the energy's a little dead, you die a little bit on the inside. That's hard for you because you invite people here because you're proud of this place. And then when this place doesn't show up, that's a disservice to you and your friend. When we worship together, tell me that worship isn't better when this room isn't full. It is full. Tell me it's not better when we sing and we raise our voices together. Tell me worship in this room isn't better with 200 than it is with 40. There's something to it. There's something to the energy of a church. There's something to looking across the room, and maybe I don't even talk to them this week, but I see them and they're here, and they're committed and we're committed. And as we come back, as we come back out of the woodwork to see those faces again and again and know that they're committed to this place like you're committed to this place. That's heartening. That's good. Your attendance even passively matters to the whole church. It's not just a you decision. And how many conversations do we miss out on? Just a few weeks ago, I had another one of those conversations. A woman walked in. She looked at me. I looked at her. I knew that she knew me. I knew I didn't know her. And she said she'd been watching me online and she was ready to come back. And she was here and she wanted to be involved in Stephen ministry. And I said, that's great. The guy who leads at Bill Reith is right over there. Let me introduce you. And I got them hooked up. What if Bill just decided that day that his attendance was only about him? Maybe she connects via email. Maybe she doesn't. Every week people come in. I was just talking to a couple this morning. They came in, they're wanting to join a small group. Well, what if I had a small group for them to join and I thought, oh, so-and-so would be great for them to talk to and then so-and-so wasn't here. Our decision to come to church impacts the whole church every week. It's a big deal. It adds to the energy in the room. It adds to the sense of camaraderie and commitment from one another. It allows us to these introductions of two people's friends to people that might get plugged in with us. One of the best things in the world, I love it so much, is you cannot, you cannot, I'm looking at you guys right here, you cannot drop your kids off on that hallway without them inviting you to their small group. You just can't do it. What if they just decide this week's not the week and we miss a chance to connect some people? Our attendance doesn't just impact us. I want you to think of it as something that impacts the whole church. Moving forward, it's important. The other way we mend nets is to serve on service teams. The other way we mend nets is to volunteer in the church. Now here's a reality across every church in the country. All their service teams are broken down. None of them have as many people as they used to. I talked to Phil Leverett, our head usher. Sometimes he lets that title go to his head. He's got quite the ego and it's difficult to deal with, but he does a good job nevertheless. And I said, hey, we want to go back to full capacity. We want to start, get your ushers together. We want to start handing out the notes again and things like that. And I said, how's your team, by the way? And he goes, well, I used to have 10 people every week, and now I have four. And two of them are me and Doug Funk. So he's got two, okay? We need people across the board. We need people to serve on service teams. And as we've come back to church, we might not resume into the same role that we had. We might not have had a role previously when last time we were normal. And so we might not feel an impetus to serve again, but I'm telling you as your pastor, all of our teams are broken down. We need more people. We need help. So what I'm asking is, if you're coming to church, serve. If you're attending on a Sunday morning regularly and you're a partner of grace, be a partner. Serve somewhere. And listen, if you're watching online this morning and you're increasingly angry at me because you're like, Nate, I don't feel comfortable coming back. Leave me alone. I get it. And I would never try to convince you to come back before you're comfortable doing it. Ever. But what I would say is, when you do come back, be ready to get to work. Because that's what I'm asking of everyone here too. If you're coming on Sunday, serve. In some capacity. Because our teams are broken down. And people need your help. I talked earlier about the idea of mending a net. Can you imagine how tedious it would be to mend a whole net by yourself? Listen, we have some people who since August of last year have just been slowly but surely washing their net, waiting for other people to come alongside them and help them out. I think of Cindy Hayes back there. I know I'm going to embarrass her, but Cindy runs sound back there. You have this sheet in your seat. It's got urgent needs. There and there. Those are the urgent needs. When Cindy's not there, she's over there with the kids. Every week. Doing her part. Just slowly mending the nets. Waiting for some people to come alongside and help her. We've got other people like Keith. Keith is back there running the feed right now. He helped us set up the live stream. If we didn't have Keith in the summer, you guys would have been watching stuff recorded on YouTube for the duration of the pandemic. We have some faithful people who sit over there and they hold fussy pandemic babies all morning. And they do it week after week. We have the Phil Leveritz of the world who shows up every Sunday to help fill in the gaps. We have Doug Funk who continues to show up and do what he can. I could go on and on and on. We've got some folks in the church who have been mending some nets. But I'm telling you that they need help. So you've got these sheets in your seat. I want us all to take a look at them. Oh, and I'm supposed to say, together let's mend our nets and get ready for all that God is doing and will do at Grace. But really, let's do that. Let's not pastor talk about what I believe is coming. And let's not pastor talk about what our needs are. We need your help. To give you an idea of how badly we need your help, I asked Erin, last time it was normal, how many regular volunteers did you have in children's ministry? And she said, I had 55 people who were regularly a part of children's ministry. Not 55 people on the roster, because there's always people on the roster who are there, they exist on the roster, but they haven't done anything in like six weeks. So in a two-month period leading into the pandemic, 55 different people served. And I said, how many people have served who are not on staff in the last month? 18. And some of those are repeats, and they're doing it every week. Some of those are elders. Some of those are elders that when we went to two services, I looked at the elders and I said, this puts a lot of stress on Aaron and the children's ministry. So I'm asking the elders to all volunteer to do this for a Sunday at least. Some of those are band-aids. We need incredible help in the kids' ministry. And I know what you're thinking. Why don't their parents volunteer? They do. They do. And also, their parents live with three children under five. So let's give them a break. Or go babysit at their house. And then they'll come here and they'll watch the rest of the kids. They do volunteer. No, it's not an option. It's not really going to happen. And we have folks from an older generation that volunteer, but that number is getting smaller and smaller. So we need you to volunteer with the kids. We need people on the tech team. We need people to work back there in the sound booth. Those are very urgent needs. Every week I have conversations with Steve and Aaron about what can we do to find more help. They've done all the shoulder tapping they know how to do, so I'm just telling you corporately, we need help in those places. If those places feel like they just don't make sense for you right now, we need other things too. And those are under the other opportunities. We need you to serve there as well. But I would also tell you, this isn't just a plea to mend the nets of grace, which we need to do. We need to get ready for what God is going to bring us. And I really do think that starts by committing to Sunday morning attendance and changing the way we think about it. And it starts by serving on a team and helping move this thing forward every Sunday morning. But I would also tell you that Jesus is found in service. There's a part of Jesus that is found in his work that you will never find anywhere else. You can read all the Bible passages you want to. You can go to all the small groups you want to. You can have all the good conversations you want to. You can worship him all you want. But there is a part of Jesus that cannot be found outside of his service. And I can tell you story after story of just people on our elder board who their catalyst in faith was taking a small step to serve on Sunday morning. So if you do this, you won't just help mend our nets and get ready for what's next at Grace, but you will also, I believe, find Jesus in that service. So we're going to do this. In a few minutes, I'm going to pray. Steve and the band are going to come up and they're going to play through a song. During that song, we're going to ask you guys to stay seated and just kind of prayerfully go over this and consider being a net mender with us. Fill it out. And at the end of the service, when everyone's dismissed, there's offering boxes as you leave. You can fold these up and put those in there. If space runs out in the offering box for some reason, just hand them to me or anybody else on staff. We'll get it figured out. But I would really love for you to take a minute. If you're a partner, if you're committed to coming, pray through this sheet, fill it out, and let's mend the nets together. Can we do that? Let me pray for us. Father, you are a good father. For those who are on the precipice of knowing what it is to be one of those, God, I just pray for so much joy and happiness and peace for them. For those for whom this day is difficult because they miss their dad, they would give anything just to spend a little bit more time with them. God, I pray that you would just nurture their spirit today in a way that only you can. Father, we are also so grateful for how you've brought us through this difficult time in our country and in our culture. We're grateful that we have a church at all to go to and that you have shepherded us so well and that we do feel so strong right now. But God, I also pray that we as partners, as people of grace, would take ownership of what you are doing here and that we would do our part to get this place ready for what you're doing next. And I pray that in doing that part, we would find you. It's in your son's name we pray. Amen.

Well, good morning. My name is Nate. I get to be one of the pastors here. Gibby, I got to hand it to you. It takes a real man to bracket himself with people with better voices than him week after week. I thought Holly and Dave sounded great this morning. Fun fact about David, I'm pretty sure that this is true. If it's not, Katie, please don't publicly correct me. But I'm pretty sure that they met at a bar or a restaurant where David was singing karaoke to Backstreet Boys. And she said, I need to know about that guy. That's true, right? I can't believe that's true. I love that story so much. And I just think that every time he's up here singing, you should know that that voice got him a family. OK, That's pretty great. That's pretty great. This morning, we are starting a new series called Frequently Asked Questions. We thought it would be good and hopefully helpful to take some time here following Easter as we kind of finish up spring, move into the summer to answer questions that Christians often ask, but sometimes are too afraid to ask them like in a small group setting or ask somebody that they know because sometimes there's things that we feel like we should know and we don't and we don't want to admit that we don't. So we just kind of go along with it and pretend like we know things when we really don't know things. And so part of what we want to do is stop and answer those questions so you don't have to ask them out loud. We want you to keep your dignity, and we're just going to help you along the best we can. To get these questions, we did poll our small groups and ask our small groups to respond and give us your questions back. I think we had about 33% participation on that. So the ones who helped, thank you. The ones who didn't, thanks for nothing. I hope you hate this series because you could have fixed it. So then we got all the responses back and we kind of grouped them together, the staff and I did, and put them up on the whiteboard and we saw, okay, where are the redundancies? What are we seeing a lot of interest in? And we tried to talk about the things that came up the most. Now, I will tell you up front, we're not touching on any hard topics. Some of you guys snuck some questions in there about revelation or culture or whatever, like, hey, let's see if Nate will do this one. No, I will not do that one. But if those questions are so burning to you that you really do want to know, I would love to get coffee or lunch with you or let you come to my office and let's chat about it. So if you have a question that is serious to you and you really do want to discuss it, I would love to discuss it. I love discussing things way more than I love actually working. So if you want to take up some time in the afternoon and I call that work and I get to talk, this is fantastic. Okay, so if there's something you want to talk about, I want to talk about it with you if it doesn't get addressed in this series. And what I'll probably do is put out the schedule for the sermons so you guys will know what we're discussing and when we're discussing it. And then you'll know if there's something that we're not going to discuss that you would like to. This morning's question is kind of an amalgamation of a bunch of different questions that all mean, how can I discern God's will for my life? It's questions like, how do I know when I'm hearing the voice of God versus when I'm just dealing with my own thoughts? How can I know God's will and move in the direction that he's encouraging me to move in with confidence, knowing that it's something that he wants me to do? Essentially, how can I discern God's will for my life? How can I be sure that I'm hearing his voice? This question is a question that comes up a lot. Almost every time I do a sermon or I mention being kingdom builders, we need to build God's kingdom. And that's my goal for everybody who calls grace home is that God would slowly but surely mold you into someone who is passionate about building God's kingdom, who understands that that's why you were placed on this earth to build his kingdom, not your own. But I always get, okay, I want to build God's kingdom. How do I do that? What do I do? And the question that they're asking is, how can I get God's discernment on his will for my life? It's this question. So I think that this question, how can I be sure that I know God's will? How can I hear God's voice? I think it kind of comes up really in two big ways in our life. The first time it comes up is when we first become a Christian or we first begin to take our faith seriously. Because when I say that, what I mean is a lot of us were saved, became a Christian as children, but we didn't really click into that Christianity until adulthood or until high school or until college. And so there's some point in our life at which we began to take our faith seriously or we drifted away from a devout faith and now we're clicking back in. We never lost our faith. We just didn't prioritize it the same way. And now we're clicking back in and it occurs to us, man, God has a will and a plan for my life and I need to know what that is. So how do I hear from God? How do I learn from him? How can I walk with confidence in his direction and in obedience? And so one way that we begin to ask this question of how can I hear God's voice is when we first kind of come online as a Christian and start to realize that God does have a direction and a will for us, and we need to tap into that. So how do we hear it? The other time in life that this question becomes really important is when we are faced with a very difficult decision. Or maybe we even find ourselves languishing in a period of indecision in our life, where we just don't know what to do. Do I take the job or do I stay where I'm at? And what I would say there just real quickly is if that job is going to take you away from grace, God does not want you to take that job. As your pastor, I'm just telling you that. I want to be direct. Do I take the job or do I not? Do I fix this relationship or do I not? Do I have that conversation with someone or do I avoid it? Do I interject myself in this situation or do I stay out? How do I move forward with my child is making this decision. I don't want them to make that decision, but they're a grown up or they're close to it. And I don't know how to be their parent right now, what do I do? And so in a room this size with this many people, I'm certain that there are some of you who may or may not be languishing, but you're certainly existing in a season of indecision. Or you may be facing a big decision, and you're just not sure how to discern God's will for that decision. You're not sure how to hear his voice. And hopefully all of us are in places where we do try to listen to God. We do try to discern his will for the big decisions and the small decisions in our life. So the way I thought about this sermon is if you and I were to down for lunch, and you were to give me one of those two scenarios. I'm newer to the faith. I hear people talking about praying and hearing from God. I don't really know how that works. How do I hear from God? That's one question. Or we sit down for lunch, and you go, I'm facing this decision. I don't know what to do. How can I discern God's will for my life? Okay, that's another question. But I would answer both those questions in the same way. And so this morning is really just practical advice. This is a highly practical sermon. And I hope and pray that it's helpful for you if you're in either of those seasons. And if you're not, I hope it's a good reminder and some things that you'll grab onto that I can give you to think about as you face decisions in the future. So if you were to ask me, hey, how do I know God's will for my life? How can I hear his voice in either this situation or in general? I would say, well, I think it's progressive. I think we have to learn. I think there's a system. And I think the Bible teaches us. The Bible gives us enough information, but I don't have to guess at how we hear from God. The Bible shows us how we hear from God. So the first thing I would say is the very first thing to do when you're facing a decision or when you want to start listening to the voice of God, I think one of the very first things we do is know that we hear from the spiritually mature. We hear God's word and God's voice and God's will from the spiritually mature people that we have in our life. I'll show you where we see this. 2 Kings chapter 4. I'm going to be looking at verses 2 through 4. So this woman, this woman comes up to Elisha. Elisha, and you can just leave that up there, Andrea. I'll get to it in just a second. I false started you on that. I'm sorry. Elisha is one of the great prophets in the Old Testament. Elijah and Elisha are some of the great prophets in the Old Testament. They're underrated and underappreciated because they don't have a book named after them, but they're probably the two greatest prophets that we have. They're incredible and their lives are amazing. And we see their stories in 1 and 2 Kings. Elisha is going about his day and a woman, a widow, comes up to him and she says, my husband has died. I have no money. My creditors are after me. I'm afraid I'm going to be homeless and destitute. What should I do? What can I do? And this is how Elisha responds beginning in verse 2. She's afraid she's going to have to give her boys over as Testament. This widow comes to Elisha and she says, I'm poor, my husband's dead, I'm destitute, and I'm afraid I'm going to have to give my sons over to slavery to pay my debts off. I don't know what to do. And Elisha says, okay, I want you to get, what do you have? Do you have a jar of oil? Great. Go around to your neighbors, ask if you can have access to their recycling bins and get all the milk, get all the gallon jugs you could find. This is essentially what's happening. Get all the jars that you can find from your neighbors, bring them to your house, go into a room by yourself, shut the door behind you and begin to pour the oil from your jar into these other jars. And so she does, as she's told, it probably doesn't make any sense to her. She probably thinks this sounds crazy, but she does it. And it's one of the great miracles of the old Testament that no matter how much she poured, there was still oil in her jar. And all the jars were filled. And then she says, I've done it. I filled all the jars I could find. He says, okay, go and sell that oil and take a chunk of it and pay off your debts. And there should be enough remaining for you to live well for a while until you can figure something else out. And so she was taken care of, but she was taken care of by going to a spiritually mature person and saying, what should I do? And then having the courage to do what she was told. And what you're going to see is that this question isn't as much about how do I know God's will for my life? This sermon and this question is really about, do you have the courage to walk in obedience when it's clear? Because a lot of times it is clear to us what we need to do. We just keep praying, hoping for a different answer because we don't want to do the thing. She did the thing. It was crazy, but she did it. And so similarly in our lives, if we want to hear from God, if we want to know what to do in a difficult decision, we should go to the spiritually mature people in our life. I have a friend named Tyler. And Tyler is, he's the most trusted recommender I have in my life. I will do, and he does research about everything. Two or three years ago, we moved into our new house. I was in an airport, and I had been doing research on security systems. Jen said she wanted an alarm on the house, so I was trying to figure out the best way to do this and how to get this accomplished. Apparently, this is not much of a security system for us, so we need a little bit extra. And I'm in an airport. I can't remember which airport I'm in, and I'm not sure what to do, and I think, I know, I'll call Tyler. I'm certain that Tyler has done research on this. So I called him, and 45 minutes later, we are still talking about security systems from all the research that he's done. He was delighted to have the conversation. I kept saying, dude, I'm so sorry I'm taking up your time on this. I know this is silly. He's like, no, no, no, I love this. Anyways, so the ring system, and he's getting back into it. Tyler, if he tells me, hey, dude, you need to read this book. Hey, man, you need to listen to this podcast. Hey, I watched this show, and it was great. I always say, don't say another word. I don't want to know what it's about. I don't need to know what it's about. I will consume it tomorrow. He is the number one recommender in my life. If Tyler says it about silly, frivolous stuff, there's no one that knows more about less important things than Tyler. So I just go with whatever he says. We need spiritual Tylers in our lives. When we face indecision, we go to them. They've done the work. They've done the research. They're in the word. They're a man or a woman of prayer. They know how to hear from God. They've matured past us. We go trust their voice when we can't trust our own. We go to spiritually mature people and we ask them what they think, trusting their ability to hear from God. If you feel like I have no idea how to hear from God, the first thing you do, go talk to spiritually mature people who know God's word and who are prayed up. Before I took this job, when it was offered to me, before I agreed to come, I went to six different senior pastors who are far more experienced than me. And I put everything in front of them. And I said, does this seem wise? Do you think this is a good idea? I went to spiritually mature people who know better than me. As a spiritually mature Christian trying to discern God's word, I went to people who had already moved beyond me and asked them what they thought. And I sought their counsel. Proverbs has a lot to say about seeking wise counsel. So if we want to hear from God, we go to wise people. The other place we go, and the only reason I didn't put this one first is because sometimes you don't know where to go in God's word. And so sometimes we need a spiritually mature person to direct us there. But the other place we go to hear from God is to know that we hear from God's word. What do we hear from God? We hear from his word. Look at Luke chapter five, verses four through six. Simon Peter had been out fishing all night and he comes back and Jesus sends him back to throw out the nets. In verse 4, when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, put out into deep water and let down the nets for a catch. Simon answered, Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything, but because you say so, I will let down the nets. When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. A lot of us know this story. A lot of us know this story. We've seen this before. But what I want you to see is Peter is responding to the very words of God, the words of the Savior. He gets done with the night of fishing and Jesus says, you didn't catch anything, go back out, cast in deep water. Which, by the way, deep water's further away, so it's no small thing that he's asking after a full night of fishing. And Peter says, we just did that, but since you told me to, I will. And he has the courage and the fidelity to obey. Which, again, is what this question is really about. Once you have discerned God's voice, do you have the courage to walk in accordance with it? They go out, they cast the nets, just like Jesus told them to, and they caught more than they could ever imagine catching before. The nets were breaking from pulling in the fish. And so the example here is when God speaks to us, we should listen. And we have the benefit of this whole Bible. And we believe about this Bible that it is inspired and it is authoritative and that these words are God's words. And so if we can find it in the Bible, God is speaking to us. And there are some things that we're trying to discern God's will on. And there are very clear passages on that thing. I've had people come to me before and say, should I forgive so-and-so? This happened in my past. I can't forgive them. Do you think God wants me to forgive them? Well, there's a passage for that. That's easy. You go to where Peter asked Jesus that very question, where Peter says, hey, if someone sins against me, I know I should forgive them. But if they do the same sin, how many more times should I forgive them for the same thing? And Peter says, should I do it up to seven times? Thinking this is a generous offer. And Jesus says, I tell you the truth, you should forgive them 70 times seven times. Which means as many times as they commit the offense, you should forgive them. So if you come to me and you go, is it the Lord's will for me to forgive this person? And a lot of times that question is not asked lightly. That question is not asked lightly. Sometimes it's stupid. Sometimes it's, you know, my boyfriend and my girlfriend broke up with me and I can't forgive them. Okay, we'll be a grownup. But other times it's really, really serious stuff. It's stuff from childhood. It's the worst kinds of betrayal and I can't find it in my heart to forgive. Do you think God wants me to forgive? Yeah, it's in the Bible. It's right there. Do you think God wants me to give, even if it's tight, even if finances are difficult? Does God want me to be a generous person and be a giver? Yeah, I think he does. If I have a lot, if I have an overabundance, and 10% is a serious chunk of money, does God still want me to give 10% even though I'm giving generously compared to all the people around me? Yeah, I think he does. I think that's the baseline in Scripture. I think that's pretty clear. So there's some things that we go back and forth about, what's God's will here, when really it's answered in Scripture. And sometimes a spiritually mature person can point us to the right passage. Sometimes we can point ourselves to the right passage. I'll tell you what's really great in this instance. This is my number one sermon prep tool. It's www.google.com. What does the Bible say about forgiveness? What does the Bible say about fathers and mothers? What does the Bible say about child rearing? Now, I know that that sounds ridiculous, and you have to kind of sort through some stuff sometimes to get something of worth, but very often you'll find that someone has made a list of all the verses that address that topic. And it allows you easily just to see, oh, this is what the Bible says about these things. And when we're trying to discern God's will for our life or what we should do in a certain situation, if we're lucky enough to find a passage that addresses it directly, we can be done wondering what God wants us to do. We just again again, have to have the courage to actually do it. Now, sometimes, sometimes we've grown in our maturity. We believe we've heard from God before. We've been obedient to scripture and we allow it to speak to us and into situations in our life, but we might be facing a decision that isn't specifically covered in the Bible. Do I take that job? Do I address that situation? Do I support them in this or not? Do I invest in my friend's company in this way? What non-profit should I serve in? I want to give, and I want to give generously, but there's so many options. What's the right one? How do I know God's will for that? So there's some questions that are not easily laid out in scripture. And for those, we need to learn to listen to God. And one thing we can do to learn to listen to God is sometimes you test God. Sometimes you test him to see. And this is a biblical thing, because that sounds a little out there, put God to the test, but there's a way in which you can do it, and it's appropriate. There's that famous story in Judges with Gideon. Gideon is a judge that God has raised up to overthrow the Midianite oppressors of his Hebrew people. And Gideon thinks that God wants him to go to battle. He's pretty sure that he's got his army assembled and God wants him to go to battle, but he just wants to be extra sure. So he says, okay, God, I think that this is what you want me to do, but just to be sure, I'm going to go to bed and I'm going to leave a fleece. I'm going to leave a fleece, a rug out in front of my tent. And if I wake up in the morning and that fleece is wet with dew and the ground around it is dry, I will take that as a signal from you that this is what I need to do. So he goes to sleep. He wakes up the next morning. Sure enough, fleece is wet. We know this. The ground is dry. And he says, okay, God, I'm going to go do the thing. That's not what he says because Gideon is like us. Gideon actually says this when he finds the fleece. Look at this verse in Judges 6, verse 39. Then Gideon said to God, I love this part, do not be angry with me. Please don't be mad. Just let me make just one more request. Allow me one more test with the fleece, but this time make the fleece dry and let the ground be covered with dew. So he's like, all right, that was a cool trick that you did with the fleece last night. But just to be sure, can you do the opposite? Can we flip it? Are you that fancy? So he goes to bed. He wakes up the next day. The ground around the fleece is soaked in dew. The fleece is dry. And Gideon knows what he needs to do. He assembles the men and he goes to war. And he goes to war knowing that he has the assurance of God to do this thing. And the wonderful part about putting God to the test is when you put him to the test for very difficult things, we don't have to lead people into war, most of us. But sometimes we have to move our families to different states. Sometimes we have to eat a big thing of humble pie. Sometimes we have to take a new job that we don't know about. Sometimes we have to step off the cliff hoping that God will catch us. And when those times come, it is so helpful to put God to the test and be able to go back to a clear signal that he gave us, yes, this is what I want you to do, move forward. There's been so many times in the life of grace and in my tenure as a senior pastor where I've had to put God to the test and say, if you want this to happen, you're going to be the one that has to do it because I don't see a way forward. And then he's made a path forward. Sometimes we can put God to the test like this. Now, I'm not recommending this, but this is a famous story in my family. And every time I hear this story, I think it's false. I think one of my great aunts or uncles made it up, okay? But my mom swears that it's true. And if you can't trust your mom, who can you trust? I have a great aunt. I forget her name. Maybe Sarah. And my whole family on my mom's side is from the South. My pop all grew up in South Georgia, literally on a dirt floor. My mom all grew up in Red Stick, Baton Rouge, and she's Cajun. So I've got a real good combination of low quality individuals in my ancestry. And my great aunt Sarah was a widow and lived alone. And her house was in disrepair. Her roof looked terrible and I believe was leaking in some places. And she was a woman of faith. She was a devout woman of faith and she went to church every Sunday. And the story goes that one day she got fed up with her roof leaking in the way that it looked. And she marched out in her front yard and she turned and faced her house and she said, Father, everybody around here knows that I'm your daughter. And if this is how you want to see them taking care of your daughter, then that's your business. But I should think that you would want better for me. And then she walks back in the house. Again, I wouldn't try it. Walks back in the house. That was her prayer. It was her test. The next day, no kidding around, she gets a knock at the door. Two dudes from a roofing company. We're new in town. We can see that you need a new roof. We'd love to replace it for free if you'll allow us to use you as a model home and put a sign in your yard. And she says, thank you, Father. Yeah, that'll be fine. She gets a new roof. God wanted her to have that roof, no doubt about it. Sometimes we put them to the test. Here's something that I do sometimes. Sometimes I'll be concerned for a person, or I'll have something that I think I want to say to somebody that's hard. Maybe I see a pattern, and I just want them to know that I see it it and I want them to know that I want to encourage them through it. Or maybe I can just see that they're having a hard time and I want to give them a space to talk about that hard time. But I'm not sure if I need to interject myself. I'm not sure if they want that. You know those prompts that you feel of, I think I should probably talk to that person. I think I need to call them. Or maybe you're in a social gathering and you see somebody and you're like, oh yeah, I wanted to talk to them about this, but I don't know if it's appropriate. I don't know if I should. The prayer that I'll pray when I feel those things is, Father, if you want me to talk to that person, will you make that possible? If I'm in a social gathering and there's somebody that I know I need to talk to, but I can't just walk up to a circle of people and start talking to them about that thing. I will pray, God, if you really do want me to say that to them, will you put me alone with them and give me a window to do that? And then I just know, and I'm sensitive to, if I'm just moving about whatever it might be, a grace's big night out, and this person ends up alone with me. Now, none of you are going to talk to me at Grace's Big Night Out. I'm not talking to him. He might have prayed about this. I'm not going over there. But if there's a door that God opens to that conversation and it becomes appropriate, I have to have the courage to walk through it. Or I'm going to lunch with somebody, and I know that there's something I want to say to them, but I'm not sure if I should, I'll pray, God, if I'm supposed to say what I think you want me to say, will you have them bring it up so that I can walk in confidence into that conversation, knowing that I'm doing the right thing? And see, for me, that's an exercise in discipline, Because I don't know how many of you are like me in that you're messed up and you love confrontation. I love it. I want to say the thing. Like, I don't want to be mean about it. I just want to put my face in the wood chipper and have the conversation. Let's just do it. It's best for everybody. I'm chomping at the bit to have those conversations. So what I'm asking for is like, God, you tell me when I'm let off the leash and I'll go. That's what I'm asking for. Others of you are just, you don't even need a leash. You don't need an electric fence. You're just going to stay in your yard. You're not going, you are so scared of those conversations. But let me tell you something. If God's placed something on your heart that he might want you to say to somebody, and then he opens the door for you to do that, have the courage and the obedience to step through it. Because I can tell you from experience, God uses those conversations. When you're having a holy conversation, a holy confrontation, a holy period of encouragement, it refreshes refreshes you and it refreshes them and it builds both of your faiths and It builds your ability to hear from God God I think you want me to say this then he opens the door then you walk through it and you say it and now that you that exists in your life as a marker of a time that you heard God's voice. And you're starting to learn it. And you're starting to walk in obedience. And he's able to use you as more of a tool as you walk through life. And it builds their faith. Because you can say to them, you know, I just have been thinking about you and praying about you. And this is on my heart and so I just feel like I want to say it. I've never said that and been met with apathy. No one's ever said that to me and I've gone, yeah, I didn't really need to hear that. I think you missed it on that one. It's always right. It's always good. So whether it's a conversation or a situation, it's okay to put God to the test and say, God, if this is truly what you want me to do, can you give me this kind of sign? Can you do this thing? Can you bring this person into my life? Will you have them, if you, I've even done it before too. I've said, God, if you want me to talk to that person about that thing, I'm going to need you to have them call me today. And then an hour later, my phone will ring and I'll see their name and my heart will sink because it's like, shoot, I have to do it. I thought that was, I thought I was going to sneak that one by him. So one thing we can do is we can put God to the test. And as we do that, eventually you learn to hear God on your own. So as we talk progressively about how can we hear from God, eventually we talk to spiritually mature people who know how to hear from God. Then we consult Scripture, God's Word. Then we start putting God to the test to learn when we are and when we are not hearing God's voice. And then eventually we learn to hear God on our own. John 14, 27 says this, or 10, 27, sorry, it's wrong in your notes. My sheep listen to my voice. I know them and they follow me. We are taught, Jesus says that his sheep know his voice, right? That when the sheep are out there, all the shepherds in the world can be yelling, but when our shepherd yells, we know and we look. I've always thought about this as God's dad whistle. Every dad worth his salt has a whistle. Charlie Healy, if you don't have one, you've got to develop one. I don't want to see you shaking your head. You go home and you work on it. Or you're underserving Henry. Every dad worth his salt has a whistle. You have to. You have to. We were on the subway in Washington, D.C. this week. And Jen and the kids were in a seat. And I was standing in the door because I had the stroller that I had to hold up. And I wanted Lily to see something. So I just gave her a little. And it cut through just that loud. but it cut through everything. She's reading a book. She looks up right at me. She knew it was me. And I was like, yes, I'm a good dad. That's all you need. You don't need to know. I didn't snap at her or be too hard on her at any point in the trip. You don't even need to know that. I'm a good dad because she responded to that whistle. I can remember being in a park when I was a kid at the ballpark or something like that running around and I would hear my dad's whistle and I knew, I knew, I know Rayvon has a whistle. I knew that I had about 10 seconds to get my butt to the car or it was going to get tore up. Like I knew that, right? Every dad worth his salt has a whistle. We hear it and we know. When we've been walking with God long enough, we know his voice. We don't have to put him to the test anymore. We just say, yes, Lord, okay, open the door and I will walk through it. Do you want me to take this job? Do you want me to do this thing? Do you want me to fix this relationship? When we've been walking with him long enough, we know his voice. It's just, I don't think it's describable. When people say, how do you know you hear from God? When you've put them to the test enough times and you've learned to recognize that impulse in your life and in your heart, you learn when it's the Holy Spirit and when it's not. But that's just a repetition thing. It's just a time thing. We've spoken to spiritually mature people. We've consulted his word. We've we've put him to the test and over time we learn to identify his voice finally as we progress through it you expect to hear from God now this one's wild to me I've never known anyone that was like this but it's in the Bible so it's's true. 2 Kings 4.27. I'm going to read it to you. This will seem unremarkable, but you'll see where I'm going. 2 Kings 4.27. So the widow is coming back. Her son has died. And when she reached the man of God at the mountain, she took hold of his feet. Gehazi came over to push her away, but the man of God said, leave her alone. She is in bitter distress, but the Lord has hidden it from me and has not told me why. So he's going through his day. The widow that he helped with the oil earlier in the chapter, her son dies, and she comes to Elisha in distress. And she grabs his feet, and Gehazi was his assistant, his right-hand man, and he goes to push her away. Like, that's not appropriate. Don't do that. And Elisha holds him off and says, don't do that. She's in bitter distress. And this is a phrase I will, it will never not impact me when I see it. And when I think about it, the Lord has hid it from me and I'm not sure why. Do you understand that Elisha walked so closely with the Lord and heard his voice so regularly that he went through his day and listening and expecting to hear things from God. He is surprised that God did not tell him about the death of this boy that he is close to and that he loves. He's surprised that God didn't. Can you imagine walking through your day and going, oh, so-and-so just got diagnosed with cancer, I'm going to call him. That just occurring to you because you can hear God's voice that clearly, but that's who Elisha was and that's who we should strive to be. I know that that feels like a very long way off for most, if not all of us, but I believe it's possible based on the example of Elisha to listen to God so intently and so regularly and to know his voice so well that he begins to tell us things that we're not even asking about. And the last thing I would say about hearing God's voice and how do we discern it is something that I say very regularly. God often speaks in stereo. God often speaks in stereo. If you're a new Christian, you want to know, or you're a newly engaged Christian, you want to know how to hear God's voice and discern his will. Know that he speaks in stereo. If you have multiple mature friends saying the same thing, that's stereo. If you have a friend saying something and you're reading scripture and you're not even seeking out an answer for this, but a verse jumps off the page in a new way that's in some way directly applies to your situation, we call that, my buddy Harris calls that a God wink. Just God winking at you going, yeah, I got you. I'm taking care of you. That's my voice. You can trust it. Or you're having a conversation and it comes up and this person says a thing and you're like, you didn't even know I was dealing with that, but that's exactly what I'm dealing with right now. This must be a God thing. Yeah, it must be. Or you come to church and I'm preaching about something and it happens to be exactly what you're dealing with that week, which happens all the time. People come up to me afterwards and go, you have no idea, but either my wife called you and told you to preach that to me, or the Holy Spirit is speaking to you because that's exactly what I needed. God often speaks in stereo. And if you find yourself in a season of indecision, if you find yourself not knowing what God's will is, but you've heard the same thing from multiple sources, it might not be that you don't know what to do. It might just be that you don't have the courage to do it yet. Because like I said, this sermon is not really about learning to discern the voice of God. It's about challenging ourselves to walk in confidence once we've heard it. These are the ways that we hear it. And if God is speaking to you in stereo, then you already know what you should be doing. So I'm going to pray for us. I'm going to pray for those of you who are in seasons of indecision that God will bring some clarity, that he will speak to you in stereo and multiple trusted sources. And I'm going to pray that for those of you who want to learn the voice of God will have opportunities even this week to begin to hear him and put him to the test and walk in faith. Let's pray. Father, thank you for this morning. Thank you for speaking to us. Thank you for being a God who hears, but also a God who speaks. God, give us ears to hear you. Give us hearts to obey you. Help us walk in confidence once we've heard from you. God, if there is someone here, as a matter of fact, I know there are people here who find themselves in these seasons of indecision. Would you give them clarity for those choices? Would you give them confidence to walk according to your will? And would you make your will abundantly clear to them? Father, for those of us who are learning to hear your voice, would you give us a chance even this week to hear it? Would you give us a chance to put you to the test so that we might walk in faith and so learn to hear your voice more and more? Would we be like your sheep who know your voice and respond to it? And one day, maybe, God, we can be like Elisha and even have the boldness to expect to hear from you. We pray these things in your son's name. Amen.

Well, good morning. My name is Nate. I get to be one of the pastors here. Gibby, I got to hand it to you. It takes a real man to bracket himself with people with better voices than him week after week. I thought Holly and Dave sounded great this morning. Fun fact about David, I'm pretty sure that this is true. If it's not, Katie, please don't publicly correct me. But I'm pretty sure that they met at a bar or a restaurant where David was singing karaoke to Backstreet Boys. And she said, I need to know about that guy. That's true, right? I can't believe that's true. I love that story so much. And I just think that every time he's up here singing, you should know that that voice got him a family. OK, That's pretty great. That's pretty great. This morning, we are starting a new series called Frequently Asked Questions. We thought it would be good and hopefully helpful to take some time here following Easter as we kind of finish up spring, move into the summer to answer questions that Christians often ask, but sometimes are too afraid to ask them like in a small group setting or ask somebody that they know because sometimes there's things that we feel like we should know and we don't and we don't want to admit that we don't. So we just kind of go along with it and pretend like we know things when we really don't know things. And so part of what we want to do is stop and answer those questions so you don't have to ask them out loud. We want you to keep your dignity, and we're just going to help you along the best we can. To get these questions, we did poll our small groups and ask our small groups to respond and give us your questions back. I think we had about 33% participation on that. So the ones who helped, thank you. The ones who didn't, thanks for nothing. I hope you hate this series because you could have fixed it. So then we got all the responses back and we kind of grouped them together, the staff and I did, and put them up on the whiteboard and we saw, okay, where are the redundancies? What are we seeing a lot of interest in? And we tried to talk about the things that came up the most. Now, I will tell you up front, we're not touching on any hard topics. Some of you guys snuck some questions in there about revelation or culture or whatever, like, hey, let's see if Nate will do this one. No, I will not do that one. But if those questions are so burning to you that you really do want to know, I would love to get coffee or lunch with you or let you come to my office and let's chat about it. So if you have a question that is serious to you and you really do want to discuss it, I would love to discuss it. I love discussing things way more than I love actually working. So if you want to take up some time in the afternoon and I call that work and I get to talk, this is fantastic. Okay, so if there's something you want to talk about, I want to talk about it with you if it doesn't get addressed in this series. And what I'll probably do is put out the schedule for the sermons so you guys will know what we're discussing and when we're discussing it. And then you'll know if there's something that we're not going to discuss that you would like to. This morning's question is kind of an amalgamation of a bunch of different questions that all mean, how can I discern God's will for my life? It's questions like, how do I know when I'm hearing the voice of God versus when I'm just dealing with my own thoughts? How can I know God's will and move in the direction that he's encouraging me to move in with confidence, knowing that it's something that he wants me to do? Essentially, how can I discern God's will for my life? How can I be sure that I'm hearing his voice? This question is a question that comes up a lot. Almost every time I do a sermon or I mention being kingdom builders, we need to build God's kingdom. And that's my goal for everybody who calls grace home is that God would slowly but surely mold you into someone who is passionate about building God's kingdom, who understands that that's why you were placed on this earth to build his kingdom, not your own. But I always get, okay, I want to build God's kingdom. How do I do that? What do I do? And the question that they're asking is, how can I get God's discernment on his will for my life? It's this question. So I think that this question, how can I be sure that I know God's will? How can I hear God's voice? I think it kind of comes up really in two big ways in our life. The first time it comes up is when we first become a Christian or we first begin to take our faith seriously. Because when I say that, what I mean is a lot of us were saved, became a Christian as children, but we didn't really click into that Christianity until adulthood or until high school or until college. And so there's some point in our life at which we began to take our faith seriously or we drifted away from a devout faith and now we're clicking back in. We never lost our faith. We just didn't prioritize it the same way. And now we're clicking back in and it occurs to us, man, God has a will and a plan for my life and I need to know what that is. So how do I hear from God? How do I learn from him? How can I walk with confidence in his direction and in obedience? And so one way that we begin to ask this question of how can I hear God's voice is when we first kind of come online as a Christian and start to realize that God does have a direction and a will for us, and we need to tap into that. So how do we hear it? The other time in life that this question becomes really important is when we are faced with a very difficult decision. Or maybe we even find ourselves languishing in a period of indecision in our life, where we just don't know what to do. Do I take the job or do I stay where I'm at? And what I would say there just real quickly is if that job is going to take you away from grace, God does not want you to take that job. As your pastor, I'm just telling you that. I want to be direct. Do I take the job or do I not? Do I fix this relationship or do I not? Do I have that conversation with someone or do I avoid it? Do I interject myself in this situation or do I stay out? How do I move forward with my child is making this decision. I don't want them to make that decision, but they're a grown up or they're close to it. And I don't know how to be their parent right now, what do I do? And so in a room this size with this many people, I'm certain that there are some of you who may or may not be languishing, but you're certainly existing in a season of indecision. Or you may be facing a big decision, and you're just not sure how to discern God's will for that decision. You're not sure how to hear his voice. And hopefully all of us are in places where we do try to listen to God. We do try to discern his will for the big decisions and the small decisions in our life. So the way I thought about this sermon is if you and I were to down for lunch, and you were to give me one of those two scenarios. I'm newer to the faith. I hear people talking about praying and hearing from God. I don't really know how that works. How do I hear from God? That's one question. Or we sit down for lunch, and you go, I'm facing this decision. I don't know what to do. How can I discern God's will for my life? Okay, that's another question. But I would answer both those questions in the same way. And so this morning is really just practical advice. This is a highly practical sermon. And I hope and pray that it's helpful for you if you're in either of those seasons. And if you're not, I hope it's a good reminder and some things that you'll grab onto that I can give you to think about as you face decisions in the future. So if you were to ask me, hey, how do I know God's will for my life? How can I hear his voice in either this situation or in general? I would say, well, I think it's progressive. I think we have to learn. I think there's a system. And I think the Bible teaches us. The Bible gives us enough information, but I don't have to guess at how we hear from God. The Bible shows us how we hear from God. So the first thing I would say is the very first thing to do when you're facing a decision or when you want to start listening to the voice of God, I think one of the very first things we do is know that we hear from the spiritually mature. We hear God's word and God's voice and God's will from the spiritually mature people that we have in our life. I'll show you where we see this. 2 Kings chapter 4. I'm going to be looking at verses 2 through 4. So this woman, this woman comes up to Elisha. Elisha, and you can just leave that up there, Andrea. I'll get to it in just a second. I false started you on that. I'm sorry. Elisha is one of the great prophets in the Old Testament. Elijah and Elisha are some of the great prophets in the Old Testament. They're underrated and underappreciated because they don't have a book named after them, but they're probably the two greatest prophets that we have. They're incredible and their lives are amazing. And we see their stories in 1 and 2 Kings. Elisha is going about his day and a woman, a widow, comes up to him and she says, my husband has died. I have no money. My creditors are after me. I'm afraid I'm going to be homeless and destitute. What should I do? What can I do? And this is how Elisha responds beginning in verse 2. She's afraid she's going to have to give her boys over as Testament. This widow comes to Elisha and she says, I'm poor, my husband's dead, I'm destitute, and I'm afraid I'm going to have to give my sons over to slavery to pay my debts off. I don't know what to do. And Elisha says, okay, I want you to get, what do you have? Do you have a jar of oil? Great. Go around to your neighbors, ask if you can have access to their recycling bins and get all the milk, get all the gallon jugs you could find. This is essentially what's happening. Get all the jars that you can find from your neighbors, bring them to your house, go into a room by yourself, shut the door behind you and begin to pour the oil from your jar into these other jars. And so she does, as she's told, it probably doesn't make any sense to her. She probably thinks this sounds crazy, but she does it. And it's one of the great miracles of the old Testament that no matter how much she poured, there was still oil in her jar. And all the jars were filled. And then she says, I've done it. I filled all the jars I could find. He says, okay, go and sell that oil and take a chunk of it and pay off your debts. And there should be enough remaining for you to live well for a while until you can figure something else out. And so she was taken care of, but she was taken care of by going to a spiritually mature person and saying, what should I do? And then having the courage to do what she was told. And what you're going to see is that this question isn't as much about how do I know God's will for my life? This sermon and this question is really about, do you have the courage to walk in obedience when it's clear? Because a lot of times it is clear to us what we need to do. We just keep praying, hoping for a different answer because we don't want to do the thing. She did the thing. It was crazy, but she did it. And so similarly in our lives, if we want to hear from God, if we want to know what to do in a difficult decision, we should go to the spiritually mature people in our life. I have a friend named Tyler. And Tyler is, he's the most trusted recommender I have in my life. I will do, and he does research about everything. Two or three years ago, we moved into our new house. I was in an airport, and I had been doing research on security systems. Jen said she wanted an alarm on the house, so I was trying to figure out the best way to do this and how to get this accomplished. Apparently, this is not much of a security system for us, so we need a little bit extra. And I'm in an airport. I can't remember which airport I'm in, and I'm not sure what to do, and I think, I know, I'll call Tyler. I'm certain that Tyler has done research on this. So I called him, and 45 minutes later, we are still talking about security systems from all the research that he's done. He was delighted to have the conversation. I kept saying, dude, I'm so sorry I'm taking up your time on this. I know this is silly. He's like, no, no, no, I love this. Anyways, so the ring system, and he's getting back into it. Tyler, if he tells me, hey, dude, you need to read this book. Hey, man, you need to listen to this podcast. Hey, I watched this show, and it was great. I always say, don't say another word. I don't want to know what it's about. I don't need to know what it's about. I will consume it tomorrow. He is the number one recommender in my life. If Tyler says it about silly, frivolous stuff, there's no one that knows more about less important things than Tyler. So I just go with whatever he says. We need spiritual Tylers in our lives. When we face indecision, we go to them. They've done the work. They've done the research. They're in the word. They're a man or a woman of prayer. They know how to hear from God. They've matured past us. We go trust their voice when we can't trust our own. We go to spiritually mature people and we ask them what they think, trusting their ability to hear from God. If you feel like I have no idea how to hear from God, the first thing you do, go talk to spiritually mature people who know God's word and who are prayed up. Before I took this job, when it was offered to me, before I agreed to come, I went to six different senior pastors who are far more experienced than me. And I put everything in front of them. And I said, does this seem wise? Do you think this is a good idea? I went to spiritually mature people who know better than me. As a spiritually mature Christian trying to discern God's word, I went to people who had already moved beyond me and asked them what they thought. And I sought their counsel. Proverbs has a lot to say about seeking wise counsel. So if we want to hear from God, we go to wise people. The other place we go, and the only reason I didn't put this one first is because sometimes you don't know where to go in God's word. And so sometimes we need a spiritually mature person to direct us there. But the other place we go to hear from God is to know that we hear from God's word. What do we hear from God? We hear from his word. Look at Luke chapter five, verses four through six. Simon Peter had been out fishing all night and he comes back and Jesus sends him back to throw out the nets. In verse 4, when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, put out into deep water and let down the nets for a catch. Simon answered, Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything, but because you say so, I will let down the nets. When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. A lot of us know this story. A lot of us know this story. We've seen this before. But what I want you to see is Peter is responding to the very words of God, the words of the Savior. He gets done with the night of fishing and Jesus says, you didn't catch anything, go back out, cast in deep water. Which, by the way, deep water's further away, so it's no small thing that he's asking after a full night of fishing. And Peter says, we just did that, but since you told me to, I will. And he has the courage and the fidelity to obey. Which, again, is what this question is really about. Once you have discerned God's voice, do you have the courage to walk in accordance with it? They go out, they cast the nets, just like Jesus told them to, and they caught more than they could ever imagine catching before. The nets were breaking from pulling in the fish. And so the example here is when God speaks to us, we should listen. And we have the benefit of this whole Bible. And we believe about this Bible that it is inspired and it is authoritative and that these words are God's words. And so if we can find it in the Bible, God is speaking to us. And there are some things that we're trying to discern God's will on. And there are very clear passages on that thing. I've had people come to me before and say, should I forgive so-and-so? This happened in my past. I can't forgive them. Do you think God wants me to forgive them? Well, there's a passage for that. That's easy. You go to where Peter asked Jesus that very question, where Peter says, hey, if someone sins against me, I know I should forgive them. But if they do the same sin, how many more times should I forgive them for the same thing? And Peter says, should I do it up to seven times? Thinking this is a generous offer. And Jesus says, I tell you the truth, you should forgive them 70 times seven times. Which means as many times as they commit the offense, you should forgive them. So if you come to me and you go, is it the Lord's will for me to forgive this person? And a lot of times that question is not asked lightly. That question is not asked lightly. Sometimes it's stupid. Sometimes it's, you know, my boyfriend and my girlfriend broke up with me and I can't forgive them. Okay, we'll be a grownup. But other times it's really, really serious stuff. It's stuff from childhood. It's the worst kinds of betrayal and I can't find it in my heart to forgive. Do you think God wants me to forgive? Yeah, it's in the Bible. It's right there. Do you think God wants me to give, even if it's tight, even if finances are difficult? Does God want me to be a generous person and be a giver? Yeah, I think he does. If I have a lot, if I have an overabundance, and 10% is a serious chunk of money, does God still want me to give 10% even though I'm giving generously compared to all the people around me? Yeah, I think he does. I think that's the baseline in Scripture. I think that's pretty clear. So there's some things that we go back and forth about, what's God's will here, when really it's answered in Scripture. And sometimes a spiritually mature person can point us to the right passage. Sometimes we can point ourselves to the right passage. I'll tell you what's really great in this instance. This is my number one sermon prep tool. It's www.google.com. What does the Bible say about forgiveness? What does the Bible say about fathers and mothers? What does the Bible say about child rearing? Now, I know that that sounds ridiculous, and you have to kind of sort through some stuff sometimes to get something of worth, but very often you'll find that someone has made a list of all the verses that address that topic. And it allows you easily just to see, oh, this is what the Bible says about these things. And when we're trying to discern God's will for our life or what we should do in a certain situation, if we're lucky enough to find a passage that addresses it directly, we can be done wondering what God wants us to do. We just again again, have to have the courage to actually do it. Now, sometimes, sometimes we've grown in our maturity. We believe we've heard from God before. We've been obedient to scripture and we allow it to speak to us and into situations in our life, but we might be facing a decision that isn't specifically covered in the Bible. Do I take that job? Do I address that situation? Do I support them in this or not? Do I invest in my friend's company in this way? What non-profit should I serve in? I want to give, and I want to give generously, but there's so many options. What's the right one? How do I know God's will for that? So there's some questions that are not easily laid out in scripture. And for those, we need to learn to listen to God. And one thing we can do to learn to listen to God is sometimes you test God. Sometimes you test him to see. And this is a biblical thing, because that sounds a little out there, put God to the test, but there's a way in which you can do it, and it's appropriate. There's that famous story in Judges with Gideon. Gideon is a judge that God has raised up to overthrow the Midianite oppressors of his Hebrew people. And Gideon thinks that God wants him to go to battle. He's pretty sure that he's got his army assembled and God wants him to go to battle, but he just wants to be extra sure. So he says, okay, God, I think that this is what you want me to do, but just to be sure, I'm going to go to bed and I'm going to leave a fleece. I'm going to leave a fleece, a rug out in front of my tent. And if I wake up in the morning and that fleece is wet with dew and the ground around it is dry, I will take that as a signal from you that this is what I need to do. So he goes to sleep. He wakes up the next morning. Sure enough, fleece is wet. We know this. The ground is dry. And he says, okay, God, I'm going to go do the thing. That's not what he says because Gideon is like us. Gideon actually says this when he finds the fleece. Look at this verse in Judges 6, verse 39. Then Gideon said to God, I love this part, do not be angry with me. Please don't be mad. Just let me make just one more request. Allow me one more test with the fleece, but this time make the fleece dry and let the ground be covered with dew. So he's like, all right, that was a cool trick that you did with the fleece last night. But just to be sure, can you do the opposite? Can we flip it? Are you that fancy? So he goes to bed. He wakes up the next day. The ground around the fleece is soaked in dew. The fleece is dry. And Gideon knows what he needs to do. He assembles the men and he goes to war. And he goes to war knowing that he has the assurance of God to do this thing. And the wonderful part about putting God to the test is when you put him to the test for very difficult things, we don't have to lead people into war, most of us. But sometimes we have to move our families to different states. Sometimes we have to eat a big thing of humble pie. Sometimes we have to take a new job that we don't know about. Sometimes we have to step off the cliff hoping that God will catch us. And when those times come, it is so helpful to put God to the test and be able to go back to a clear signal that he gave us, yes, this is what I want you to do, move forward. There's been so many times in the life of grace and in my tenure as a senior pastor where I've had to put God to the test and say, if you want this to happen, you're going to be the one that has to do it because I don't see a way forward. And then he's made a path forward. Sometimes we can put God to the test like this. Now, I'm not recommending this, but this is a famous story in my family. And every time I hear this story, I think it's false. I think one of my great aunts or uncles made it up, okay? But my mom swears that it's true. And if you can't trust your mom, who can you trust? I have a great aunt. I forget her name. Maybe Sarah. And my whole family on my mom's side is from the South. My pop all grew up in South Georgia, literally on a dirt floor. My mom all grew up in Red Stick, Baton Rouge, and she's Cajun. So I've got a real good combination of low quality individuals in my ancestry. And my great aunt Sarah was a widow and lived alone. And her house was in disrepair. Her roof looked terrible and I believe was leaking in some places. And she was a woman of faith. She was a devout woman of faith and she went to church every Sunday. And the story goes that one day she got fed up with her roof leaking in the way that it looked. And she marched out in her front yard and she turned and faced her house and she said, Father, everybody around here knows that I'm your daughter. And if this is how you want to see them taking care of your daughter, then that's your business. But I should think that you would want better for me. And then she walks back in the house. Again, I wouldn't try it. Walks back in the house. That was her prayer. It was her test. The next day, no kidding around, she gets a knock at the door. Two dudes from a roofing company. We're new in town. We can see that you need a new roof. We'd love to replace it for free if you'll allow us to use you as a model home and put a sign in your yard. And she says, thank you, Father. Yeah, that'll be fine. She gets a new roof. God wanted her to have that roof, no doubt about it. Sometimes we put them to the test. Here's something that I do sometimes. Sometimes I'll be concerned for a person, or I'll have something that I think I want to say to somebody that's hard. Maybe I see a pattern, and I just want them to know that I see it it and I want them to know that I want to encourage them through it. Or maybe I can just see that they're having a hard time and I want to give them a space to talk about that hard time. But I'm not sure if I need to interject myself. I'm not sure if they want that. You know those prompts that you feel of, I think I should probably talk to that person. I think I need to call them. Or maybe you're in a social gathering and you see somebody and you're like, oh yeah, I wanted to talk to them about this, but I don't know if it's appropriate. I don't know if I should. The prayer that I'll pray when I feel those things is, Father, if you want me to talk to that person, will you make that possible? If I'm in a social gathering and there's somebody that I know I need to talk to, but I can't just walk up to a circle of people and start talking to them about that thing. I will pray, God, if you really do want me to say that to them, will you put me alone with them and give me a window to do that? And then I just know, and I'm sensitive to, if I'm just moving about whatever it might be, a grace's big night out, and this person ends up alone with me. Now, none of you are going to talk to me at Grace's Big Night Out. I'm not talking to him. He might have prayed about this. I'm not going over there. But if there's a door that God opens to that conversation and it becomes appropriate, I have to have the courage to walk through it. Or I'm going to lunch with somebody, and I know that there's something I want to say to them, but I'm not sure if I should, I'll pray, God, if I'm supposed to say what I think you want me to say, will you have them bring it up so that I can walk in confidence into that conversation, knowing that I'm doing the right thing? And see, for me, that's an exercise in discipline, Because I don't know how many of you are like me in that you're messed up and you love confrontation. I love it. I want to say the thing. Like, I don't want to be mean about it. I just want to put my face in the wood chipper and have the conversation. Let's just do it. It's best for everybody. I'm chomping at the bit to have those conversations. So what I'm asking for is like, God, you tell me when I'm let off the leash and I'll go. That's what I'm asking for. Others of you are just, you don't even need a leash. You don't need an electric fence. You're just going to stay in your yard. You're not going, you are so scared of those conversations. But let me tell you something. If God's placed something on your heart that he might want you to say to somebody, and then he opens the door for you to do that, have the courage and the obedience to step through it. Because I can tell you from experience, God uses those conversations. When you're having a holy conversation, a holy confrontation, a holy period of encouragement, it refreshes refreshes you and it refreshes them and it builds both of your faiths and It builds your ability to hear from God God I think you want me to say this then he opens the door then you walk through it and you say it and now that you that exists in your life as a marker of a time that you heard God's voice. And you're starting to learn it. And you're starting to walk in obedience. And he's able to use you as more of a tool as you walk through life. And it builds their faith. Because you can say to them, you know, I just have been thinking about you and praying about you. And this is on my heart and so I just feel like I want to say it. I've never said that and been met with apathy. No one's ever said that to me and I've gone, yeah, I didn't really need to hear that. I think you missed it on that one. It's always right. It's always good. So whether it's a conversation or a situation, it's okay to put God to the test and say, God, if this is truly what you want me to do, can you give me this kind of sign? Can you do this thing? Can you bring this person into my life? Will you have them, if you, I've even done it before too. I've said, God, if you want me to talk to that person about that thing, I'm going to need you to have them call me today. And then an hour later, my phone will ring and I'll see their name and my heart will sink because it's like, shoot, I have to do it. I thought that was, I thought I was going to sneak that one by him. So one thing we can do is we can put God to the test. And as we do that, eventually you learn to hear God on your own. So as we talk progressively about how can we hear from God, eventually we talk to spiritually mature people who know how to hear from God. Then we consult Scripture, God's Word. Then we start putting God to the test to learn when we are and when we are not hearing God's voice. And then eventually we learn to hear God on our own. John 14, 27 says this, or 10, 27, sorry, it's wrong in your notes. My sheep listen to my voice. I know them and they follow me. We are taught, Jesus says that his sheep know his voice, right? That when the sheep are out there, all the shepherds in the world can be yelling, but when our shepherd yells, we know and we look. I've always thought about this as God's dad whistle. Every dad worth his salt has a whistle. Charlie Healy, if you don't have one, you've got to develop one. I don't want to see you shaking your head. You go home and you work on it. Or you're underserving Henry. Every dad worth his salt has a whistle. You have to. You have to. We were on the subway in Washington, D.C. this week. And Jen and the kids were in a seat. And I was standing in the door because I had the stroller that I had to hold up. And I wanted Lily to see something. So I just gave her a little. And it cut through just that loud. but it cut through everything. She's reading a book. She looks up right at me. She knew it was me. And I was like, yes, I'm a good dad. That's all you need. You don't need to know. I didn't snap at her or be too hard on her at any point in the trip. You don't even need to know that. I'm a good dad because she responded to that whistle. I can remember being in a park when I was a kid at the ballpark or something like that running around and I would hear my dad's whistle and I knew, I knew, I know Rayvon has a whistle. I knew that I had about 10 seconds to get my butt to the car or it was going to get tore up. Like I knew that, right? Every dad worth his salt has a whistle. We hear it and we know. When we've been walking with God long enough, we know his voice. We don't have to put him to the test anymore. We just say, yes, Lord, okay, open the door and I will walk through it. Do you want me to take this job? Do you want me to do this thing? Do you want me to fix this relationship? When we've been walking with him long enough, we know his voice. It's just, I don't think it's describable. When people say, how do you know you hear from God? When you've put them to the test enough times and you've learned to recognize that impulse in your life and in your heart, you learn when it's the Holy Spirit and when it's not. But that's just a repetition thing. It's just a time thing. We've spoken to spiritually mature people. We've consulted his word. We've we've put him to the test and over time we learn to identify his voice finally as we progress through it you expect to hear from God now this one's wild to me I've never known anyone that was like this but it's in the Bible so it's's true. 2 Kings 4.27. I'm going to read it to you. This will seem unremarkable, but you'll see where I'm going. 2 Kings 4.27. So the widow is coming back. Her son has died. And when she reached the man of God at the mountain, she took hold of his feet. Gehazi came over to push her away, but the man of God said, leave her alone. She is in bitter distress, but the Lord has hidden it from me and has not told me why. So he's going through his day. The widow that he helped with the oil earlier in the chapter, her son dies, and she comes to Elisha in distress. And she grabs his feet, and Gehazi was his assistant, his right-hand man, and he goes to push her away. Like, that's not appropriate. Don't do that. And Elisha holds him off and says, don't do that. She's in bitter distress. And this is a phrase I will, it will never not impact me when I see it. And when I think about it, the Lord has hid it from me and I'm not sure why. Do you understand that Elisha walked so closely with the Lord and heard his voice so regularly that he went through his day and listening and expecting to hear things from God. He is surprised that God did not tell him about the death of this boy that he is close to and that he loves. He's surprised that God didn't. Can you imagine walking through your day and going, oh, so-and-so just got diagnosed with cancer, I'm going to call him. That just occurring to you because you can hear God's voice that clearly, but that's who Elisha was and that's who we should strive to be. I know that that feels like a very long way off for most, if not all of us, but I believe it's possible based on the example of Elisha to listen to God so intently and so regularly and to know his voice so well that he begins to tell us things that we're not even asking about. And the last thing I would say about hearing God's voice and how do we discern it is something that I say very regularly. God often speaks in stereo. God often speaks in stereo. If you're a new Christian, you want to know, or you're a newly engaged Christian, you want to know how to hear God's voice and discern his will. Know that he speaks in stereo. If you have multiple mature friends saying the same thing, that's stereo. If you have a friend saying something and you're reading scripture and you're not even seeking out an answer for this, but a verse jumps off the page in a new way that's in some way directly applies to your situation, we call that, my buddy Harris calls that a God wink. Just God winking at you going, yeah, I got you. I'm taking care of you. That's my voice. You can trust it. Or you're having a conversation and it comes up and this person says a thing and you're like, you didn't even know I was dealing with that, but that's exactly what I'm dealing with right now. This must be a God thing. Yeah, it must be. Or you come to church and I'm preaching about something and it happens to be exactly what you're dealing with that week, which happens all the time. People come up to me afterwards and go, you have no idea, but either my wife called you and told you to preach that to me, or the Holy Spirit is speaking to you because that's exactly what I needed. God often speaks in stereo. And if you find yourself in a season of indecision, if you find yourself not knowing what God's will is, but you've heard the same thing from multiple sources, it might not be that you don't know what to do. It might just be that you don't have the courage to do it yet. Because like I said, this sermon is not really about learning to discern the voice of God. It's about challenging ourselves to walk in confidence once we've heard it. These are the ways that we hear it. And if God is speaking to you in stereo, then you already know what you should be doing. So I'm going to pray for us. I'm going to pray for those of you who are in seasons of indecision that God will bring some clarity, that he will speak to you in stereo and multiple trusted sources. And I'm going to pray that for those of you who want to learn the voice of God will have opportunities even this week to begin to hear him and put him to the test and walk in faith. Let's pray. Father, thank you for this morning. Thank you for speaking to us. Thank you for being a God who hears, but also a God who speaks. God, give us ears to hear you. Give us hearts to obey you. Help us walk in confidence once we've heard from you. God, if there is someone here, as a matter of fact, I know there are people here who find themselves in these seasons of indecision. Would you give them clarity for those choices? Would you give them confidence to walk according to your will? And would you make your will abundantly clear to them? Father, for those of us who are learning to hear your voice, would you give us a chance even this week to hear it? Would you give us a chance to put you to the test so that we might walk in faith and so learn to hear your voice more and more? Would we be like your sheep who know your voice and respond to it? And one day, maybe, God, we can be like Elisha and even have the boldness to expect to hear from you. We pray these things in your son's name. Amen.

Well, good morning. My name is Nate. I get to be one of the pastors here. Gibby, I got to hand it to you. It takes a real man to bracket himself with people with better voices than him week after week. I thought Holly and Dave sounded great this morning. Fun fact about David, I'm pretty sure that this is true. If it's not, Katie, please don't publicly correct me. But I'm pretty sure that they met at a bar or a restaurant where David was singing karaoke to Backstreet Boys. And she said, I need to know about that guy. That's true, right? I can't believe that's true. I love that story so much. And I just think that every time he's up here singing, you should know that that voice got him a family. OK, That's pretty great. That's pretty great. This morning, we are starting a new series called Frequently Asked Questions. We thought it would be good and hopefully helpful to take some time here following Easter as we kind of finish up spring, move into the summer to answer questions that Christians often ask, but sometimes are too afraid to ask them like in a small group setting or ask somebody that they know because sometimes there's things that we feel like we should know and we don't and we don't want to admit that we don't. So we just kind of go along with it and pretend like we know things when we really don't know things. And so part of what we want to do is stop and answer those questions so you don't have to ask them out loud. We want you to keep your dignity, and we're just going to help you along the best we can. To get these questions, we did poll our small groups and ask our small groups to respond and give us your questions back. I think we had about 33% participation on that. So the ones who helped, thank you. The ones who didn't, thanks for nothing. I hope you hate this series because you could have fixed it. So then we got all the responses back and we kind of grouped them together, the staff and I did, and put them up on the whiteboard and we saw, okay, where are the redundancies? What are we seeing a lot of interest in? And we tried to talk about the things that came up the most. Now, I will tell you up front, we're not touching on any hard topics. Some of you guys snuck some questions in there about revelation or culture or whatever, like, hey, let's see if Nate will do this one. No, I will not do that one. But if those questions are so burning to you that you really do want to know, I would love to get coffee or lunch with you or let you come to my office and let's chat about it. So if you have a question that is serious to you and you really do want to discuss it, I would love to discuss it. I love discussing things way more than I love actually working. So if you want to take up some time in the afternoon and I call that work and I get to talk, this is fantastic. Okay, so if there's something you want to talk about, I want to talk about it with you if it doesn't get addressed in this series. And what I'll probably do is put out the schedule for the sermons so you guys will know what we're discussing and when we're discussing it. And then you'll know if there's something that we're not going to discuss that you would like to. This morning's question is kind of an amalgamation of a bunch of different questions that all mean, how can I discern God's will for my life? It's questions like, how do I know when I'm hearing the voice of God versus when I'm just dealing with my own thoughts? How can I know God's will and move in the direction that he's encouraging me to move in with confidence, knowing that it's something that he wants me to do? Essentially, how can I discern God's will for my life? How can I be sure that I'm hearing his voice? This question is a question that comes up a lot. Almost every time I do a sermon or I mention being kingdom builders, we need to build God's kingdom. And that's my goal for everybody who calls grace home is that God would slowly but surely mold you into someone who is passionate about building God's kingdom, who understands that that's why you were placed on this earth to build his kingdom, not your own. But I always get, okay, I want to build God's kingdom. How do I do that? What do I do? And the question that they're asking is, how can I get God's discernment on his will for my life? It's this question. So I think that this question, how can I be sure that I know God's will? How can I hear God's voice? I think it kind of comes up really in two big ways in our life. The first time it comes up is when we first become a Christian or we first begin to take our faith seriously. Because when I say that, what I mean is a lot of us were saved, became a Christian as children, but we didn't really click into that Christianity until adulthood or until high school or until college. And so there's some point in our life at which we began to take our faith seriously or we drifted away from a devout faith and now we're clicking back in. We never lost our faith. We just didn't prioritize it the same way. And now we're clicking back in and it occurs to us, man, God has a will and a plan for my life and I need to know what that is. So how do I hear from God? How do I learn from him? How can I walk with confidence in his direction and in obedience? And so one way that we begin to ask this question of how can I hear God's voice is when we first kind of come online as a Christian and start to realize that God does have a direction and a will for us, and we need to tap into that. So how do we hear it? The other time in life that this question becomes really important is when we are faced with a very difficult decision. Or maybe we even find ourselves languishing in a period of indecision in our life, where we just don't know what to do. Do I take the job or do I stay where I'm at? And what I would say there just real quickly is if that job is going to take you away from grace, God does not want you to take that job. As your pastor, I'm just telling you that. I want to be direct. Do I take the job or do I not? Do I fix this relationship or do I not? Do I have that conversation with someone or do I avoid it? Do I interject myself in this situation or do I stay out? How do I move forward with my child is making this decision. I don't want them to make that decision, but they're a grown up or they're close to it. And I don't know how to be their parent right now, what do I do? And so in a room this size with this many people, I'm certain that there are some of you who may or may not be languishing, but you're certainly existing in a season of indecision. Or you may be facing a big decision, and you're just not sure how to discern God's will for that decision. You're not sure how to hear his voice. And hopefully all of us are in places where we do try to listen to God. We do try to discern his will for the big decisions and the small decisions in our life. So the way I thought about this sermon is if you and I were to down for lunch, and you were to give me one of those two scenarios. I'm newer to the faith. I hear people talking about praying and hearing from God. I don't really know how that works. How do I hear from God? That's one question. Or we sit down for lunch, and you go, I'm facing this decision. I don't know what to do. How can I discern God's will for my life? Okay, that's another question. But I would answer both those questions in the same way. And so this morning is really just practical advice. This is a highly practical sermon. And I hope and pray that it's helpful for you if you're in either of those seasons. And if you're not, I hope it's a good reminder and some things that you'll grab onto that I can give you to think about as you face decisions in the future. So if you were to ask me, hey, how do I know God's will for my life? How can I hear his voice in either this situation or in general? I would say, well, I think it's progressive. I think we have to learn. I think there's a system. And I think the Bible teaches us. The Bible gives us enough information, but I don't have to guess at how we hear from God. The Bible shows us how we hear from God. So the first thing I would say is the very first thing to do when you're facing a decision or when you want to start listening to the voice of God, I think one of the very first things we do is know that we hear from the spiritually mature. We hear God's word and God's voice and God's will from the spiritually mature people that we have in our life. I'll show you where we see this. 2 Kings chapter 4. I'm going to be looking at verses 2 through 4. So this woman, this woman comes up to Elisha. Elisha, and you can just leave that up there, Andrea. I'll get to it in just a second. I false started you on that. I'm sorry. Elisha is one of the great prophets in the Old Testament. Elijah and Elisha are some of the great prophets in the Old Testament. They're underrated and underappreciated because they don't have a book named after them, but they're probably the two greatest prophets that we have. They're incredible and their lives are amazing. And we see their stories in 1 and 2 Kings. Elisha is going about his day and a woman, a widow, comes up to him and she says, my husband has died. I have no money. My creditors are after me. I'm afraid I'm going to be homeless and destitute. What should I do? What can I do? And this is how Elisha responds beginning in verse 2. She's afraid she's going to have to give her boys over as Testament. This widow comes to Elisha and she says, I'm poor, my husband's dead, I'm destitute, and I'm afraid I'm going to have to give my sons over to slavery to pay my debts off. I don't know what to do. And Elisha says, okay, I want you to get, what do you have? Do you have a jar of oil? Great. Go around to your neighbors, ask if you can have access to their recycling bins and get all the milk, get all the gallon jugs you could find. This is essentially what's happening. Get all the jars that you can find from your neighbors, bring them to your house, go into a room by yourself, shut the door behind you and begin to pour the oil from your jar into these other jars. And so she does, as she's told, it probably doesn't make any sense to her. She probably thinks this sounds crazy, but she does it. And it's one of the great miracles of the old Testament that no matter how much she poured, there was still oil in her jar. And all the jars were filled. And then she says, I've done it. I filled all the jars I could find. He says, okay, go and sell that oil and take a chunk of it and pay off your debts. And there should be enough remaining for you to live well for a while until you can figure something else out. And so she was taken care of, but she was taken care of by going to a spiritually mature person and saying, what should I do? And then having the courage to do what she was told. And what you're going to see is that this question isn't as much about how do I know God's will for my life? This sermon and this question is really about, do you have the courage to walk in obedience when it's clear? Because a lot of times it is clear to us what we need to do. We just keep praying, hoping for a different answer because we don't want to do the thing. She did the thing. It was crazy, but she did it. And so similarly in our lives, if we want to hear from God, if we want to know what to do in a difficult decision, we should go to the spiritually mature people in our life. I have a friend named Tyler. And Tyler is, he's the most trusted recommender I have in my life. I will do, and he does research about everything. Two or three years ago, we moved into our new house. I was in an airport, and I had been doing research on security systems. Jen said she wanted an alarm on the house, so I was trying to figure out the best way to do this and how to get this accomplished. Apparently, this is not much of a security system for us, so we need a little bit extra. And I'm in an airport. I can't remember which airport I'm in, and I'm not sure what to do, and I think, I know, I'll call Tyler. I'm certain that Tyler has done research on this. So I called him, and 45 minutes later, we are still talking about security systems from all the research that he's done. He was delighted to have the conversation. I kept saying, dude, I'm so sorry I'm taking up your time on this. I know this is silly. He's like, no, no, no, I love this. Anyways, so the ring system, and he's getting back into it. Tyler, if he tells me, hey, dude, you need to read this book. Hey, man, you need to listen to this podcast. Hey, I watched this show, and it was great. I always say, don't say another word. I don't want to know what it's about. I don't need to know what it's about. I will consume it tomorrow. He is the number one recommender in my life. If Tyler says it about silly, frivolous stuff, there's no one that knows more about less important things than Tyler. So I just go with whatever he says. We need spiritual Tylers in our lives. When we face indecision, we go to them. They've done the work. They've done the research. They're in the word. They're a man or a woman of prayer. They know how to hear from God. They've matured past us. We go trust their voice when we can't trust our own. We go to spiritually mature people and we ask them what they think, trusting their ability to hear from God. If you feel like I have no idea how to hear from God, the first thing you do, go talk to spiritually mature people who know God's word and who are prayed up. Before I took this job, when it was offered to me, before I agreed to come, I went to six different senior pastors who are far more experienced than me. And I put everything in front of them. And I said, does this seem wise? Do you think this is a good idea? I went to spiritually mature people who know better than me. As a spiritually mature Christian trying to discern God's word, I went to people who had already moved beyond me and asked them what they thought. And I sought their counsel. Proverbs has a lot to say about seeking wise counsel. So if we want to hear from God, we go to wise people. The other place we go, and the only reason I didn't put this one first is because sometimes you don't know where to go in God's word. And so sometimes we need a spiritually mature person to direct us there. But the other place we go to hear from God is to know that we hear from God's word. What do we hear from God? We hear from his word. Look at Luke chapter five, verses four through six. Simon Peter had been out fishing all night and he comes back and Jesus sends him back to throw out the nets. In verse 4, when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, put out into deep water and let down the nets for a catch. Simon answered, Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything, but because you say so, I will let down the nets. When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. A lot of us know this story. A lot of us know this story. We've seen this before. But what I want you to see is Peter is responding to the very words of God, the words of the Savior. He gets done with the night of fishing and Jesus says, you didn't catch anything, go back out, cast in deep water. Which, by the way, deep water's further away, so it's no small thing that he's asking after a full night of fishing. And Peter says, we just did that, but since you told me to, I will. And he has the courage and the fidelity to obey. Which, again, is what this question is really about. Once you have discerned God's voice, do you have the courage to walk in accordance with it? They go out, they cast the nets, just like Jesus told them to, and they caught more than they could ever imagine catching before. The nets were breaking from pulling in the fish. And so the example here is when God speaks to us, we should listen. And we have the benefit of this whole Bible. And we believe about this Bible that it is inspired and it is authoritative and that these words are God's words. And so if we can find it in the Bible, God is speaking to us. And there are some things that we're trying to discern God's will on. And there are very clear passages on that thing. I've had people come to me before and say, should I forgive so-and-so? This happened in my past. I can't forgive them. Do you think God wants me to forgive them? Well, there's a passage for that. That's easy. You go to where Peter asked Jesus that very question, where Peter says, hey, if someone sins against me, I know I should forgive them. But if they do the same sin, how many more times should I forgive them for the same thing? And Peter says, should I do it up to seven times? Thinking this is a generous offer. And Jesus says, I tell you the truth, you should forgive them 70 times seven times. Which means as many times as they commit the offense, you should forgive them. So if you come to me and you go, is it the Lord's will for me to forgive this person? And a lot of times that question is not asked lightly. That question is not asked lightly. Sometimes it's stupid. Sometimes it's, you know, my boyfriend and my girlfriend broke up with me and I can't forgive them. Okay, we'll be a grownup. But other times it's really, really serious stuff. It's stuff from childhood. It's the worst kinds of betrayal and I can't find it in my heart to forgive. Do you think God wants me to forgive? Yeah, it's in the Bible. It's right there. Do you think God wants me to give, even if it's tight, even if finances are difficult? Does God want me to be a generous person and be a giver? Yeah, I think he does. If I have a lot, if I have an overabundance, and 10% is a serious chunk of money, does God still want me to give 10% even though I'm giving generously compared to all the people around me? Yeah, I think he does. I think that's the baseline in Scripture. I think that's pretty clear. So there's some things that we go back and forth about, what's God's will here, when really it's answered in Scripture. And sometimes a spiritually mature person can point us to the right passage. Sometimes we can point ourselves to the right passage. I'll tell you what's really great in this instance. This is my number one sermon prep tool. It's www.google.com. What does the Bible say about forgiveness? What does the Bible say about fathers and mothers? What does the Bible say about child rearing? Now, I know that that sounds ridiculous, and you have to kind of sort through some stuff sometimes to get something of worth, but very often you'll find that someone has made a list of all the verses that address that topic. And it allows you easily just to see, oh, this is what the Bible says about these things. And when we're trying to discern God's will for our life or what we should do in a certain situation, if we're lucky enough to find a passage that addresses it directly, we can be done wondering what God wants us to do. We just again again, have to have the courage to actually do it. Now, sometimes, sometimes we've grown in our maturity. We believe we've heard from God before. We've been obedient to scripture and we allow it to speak to us and into situations in our life, but we might be facing a decision that isn't specifically covered in the Bible. Do I take that job? Do I address that situation? Do I support them in this or not? Do I invest in my friend's company in this way? What non-profit should I serve in? I want to give, and I want to give generously, but there's so many options. What's the right one? How do I know God's will for that? So there's some questions that are not easily laid out in scripture. And for those, we need to learn to listen to God. And one thing we can do to learn to listen to God is sometimes you test God. Sometimes you test him to see. And this is a biblical thing, because that sounds a little out there, put God to the test, but there's a way in which you can do it, and it's appropriate. There's that famous story in Judges with Gideon. Gideon is a judge that God has raised up to overthrow the Midianite oppressors of his Hebrew people. And Gideon thinks that God wants him to go to battle. He's pretty sure that he's got his army assembled and God wants him to go to battle, but he just wants to be extra sure. So he says, okay, God, I think that this is what you want me to do, but just to be sure, I'm going to go to bed and I'm going to leave a fleece. I'm going to leave a fleece, a rug out in front of my tent. And if I wake up in the morning and that fleece is wet with dew and the ground around it is dry, I will take that as a signal from you that this is what I need to do. So he goes to sleep. He wakes up the next morning. Sure enough, fleece is wet. We know this. The ground is dry. And he says, okay, God, I'm going to go do the thing. That's not what he says because Gideon is like us. Gideon actually says this when he finds the fleece. Look at this verse in Judges 6, verse 39. Then Gideon said to God, I love this part, do not be angry with me. Please don't be mad. Just let me make just one more request. Allow me one more test with the fleece, but this time make the fleece dry and let the ground be covered with dew. So he's like, all right, that was a cool trick that you did with the fleece last night. But just to be sure, can you do the opposite? Can we flip it? Are you that fancy? So he goes to bed. He wakes up the next day. The ground around the fleece is soaked in dew. The fleece is dry. And Gideon knows what he needs to do. He assembles the men and he goes to war. And he goes to war knowing that he has the assurance of God to do this thing. And the wonderful part about putting God to the test is when you put him to the test for very difficult things, we don't have to lead people into war, most of us. But sometimes we have to move our families to different states. Sometimes we have to eat a big thing of humble pie. Sometimes we have to take a new job that we don't know about. Sometimes we have to step off the cliff hoping that God will catch us. And when those times come, it is so helpful to put God to the test and be able to go back to a clear signal that he gave us, yes, this is what I want you to do, move forward. There's been so many times in the life of grace and in my tenure as a senior pastor where I've had to put God to the test and say, if you want this to happen, you're going to be the one that has to do it because I don't see a way forward. And then he's made a path forward. Sometimes we can put God to the test like this. Now, I'm not recommending this, but this is a famous story in my family. And every time I hear this story, I think it's false. I think one of my great aunts or uncles made it up, okay? But my mom swears that it's true. And if you can't trust your mom, who can you trust? I have a great aunt. I forget her name. Maybe Sarah. And my whole family on my mom's side is from the South. My pop all grew up in South Georgia, literally on a dirt floor. My mom all grew up in Red Stick, Baton Rouge, and she's Cajun. So I've got a real good combination of low quality individuals in my ancestry. And my great aunt Sarah was a widow and lived alone. And her house was in disrepair. Her roof looked terrible and I believe was leaking in some places. And she was a woman of faith. She was a devout woman of faith and she went to church every Sunday. And the story goes that one day she got fed up with her roof leaking in the way that it looked. And she marched out in her front yard and she turned and faced her house and she said, Father, everybody around here knows that I'm your daughter. And if this is how you want to see them taking care of your daughter, then that's your business. But I should think that you would want better for me. And then she walks back in the house. Again, I wouldn't try it. Walks back in the house. That was her prayer. It was her test. The next day, no kidding around, she gets a knock at the door. Two dudes from a roofing company. We're new in town. We can see that you need a new roof. We'd love to replace it for free if you'll allow us to use you as a model home and put a sign in your yard. And she says, thank you, Father. Yeah, that'll be fine. She gets a new roof. God wanted her to have that roof, no doubt about it. Sometimes we put them to the test. Here's something that I do sometimes. Sometimes I'll be concerned for a person, or I'll have something that I think I want to say to somebody that's hard. Maybe I see a pattern, and I just want them to know that I see it it and I want them to know that I want to encourage them through it. Or maybe I can just see that they're having a hard time and I want to give them a space to talk about that hard time. But I'm not sure if I need to interject myself. I'm not sure if they want that. You know those prompts that you feel of, I think I should probably talk to that person. I think I need to call them. Or maybe you're in a social gathering and you see somebody and you're like, oh yeah, I wanted to talk to them about this, but I don't know if it's appropriate. I don't know if I should. The prayer that I'll pray when I feel those things is, Father, if you want me to talk to that person, will you make that possible? If I'm in a social gathering and there's somebody that I know I need to talk to, but I can't just walk up to a circle of people and start talking to them about that thing. I will pray, God, if you really do want me to say that to them, will you put me alone with them and give me a window to do that? And then I just know, and I'm sensitive to, if I'm just moving about whatever it might be, a grace's big night out, and this person ends up alone with me. Now, none of you are going to talk to me at Grace's Big Night Out. I'm not talking to him. He might have prayed about this. I'm not going over there. But if there's a door that God opens to that conversation and it becomes appropriate, I have to have the courage to walk through it. Or I'm going to lunch with somebody, and I know that there's something I want to say to them, but I'm not sure if I should, I'll pray, God, if I'm supposed to say what I think you want me to say, will you have them bring it up so that I can walk in confidence into that conversation, knowing that I'm doing the right thing? And see, for me, that's an exercise in discipline, Because I don't know how many of you are like me in that you're messed up and you love confrontation. I love it. I want to say the thing. Like, I don't want to be mean about it. I just want to put my face in the wood chipper and have the conversation. Let's just do it. It's best for everybody. I'm chomping at the bit to have those conversations. So what I'm asking for is like, God, you tell me when I'm let off the leash and I'll go. That's what I'm asking for. Others of you are just, you don't even need a leash. You don't need an electric fence. You're just going to stay in your yard. You're not going, you are so scared of those conversations. But let me tell you something. If God's placed something on your heart that he might want you to say to somebody, and then he opens the door for you to do that, have the courage and the obedience to step through it. Because I can tell you from experience, God uses those conversations. When you're having a holy conversation, a holy confrontation, a holy period of encouragement, it refreshes refreshes you and it refreshes them and it builds both of your faiths and It builds your ability to hear from God God I think you want me to say this then he opens the door then you walk through it and you say it and now that you that exists in your life as a marker of a time that you heard God's voice. And you're starting to learn it. And you're starting to walk in obedience. And he's able to use you as more of a tool as you walk through life. And it builds their faith. Because you can say to them, you know, I just have been thinking about you and praying about you. And this is on my heart and so I just feel like I want to say it. I've never said that and been met with apathy. No one's ever said that to me and I've gone, yeah, I didn't really need to hear that. I think you missed it on that one. It's always right. It's always good. So whether it's a conversation or a situation, it's okay to put God to the test and say, God, if this is truly what you want me to do, can you give me this kind of sign? Can you do this thing? Can you bring this person into my life? Will you have them, if you, I've even done it before too. I've said, God, if you want me to talk to that person about that thing, I'm going to need you to have them call me today. And then an hour later, my phone will ring and I'll see their name and my heart will sink because it's like, shoot, I have to do it. I thought that was, I thought I was going to sneak that one by him. So one thing we can do is we can put God to the test. And as we do that, eventually you learn to hear God on your own. So as we talk progressively about how can we hear from God, eventually we talk to spiritually mature people who know how to hear from God. Then we consult Scripture, God's Word. Then we start putting God to the test to learn when we are and when we are not hearing God's voice. And then eventually we learn to hear God on our own. John 14, 27 says this, or 10, 27, sorry, it's wrong in your notes. My sheep listen to my voice. I know them and they follow me. We are taught, Jesus says that his sheep know his voice, right? That when the sheep are out there, all the shepherds in the world can be yelling, but when our shepherd yells, we know and we look. I've always thought about this as God's dad whistle. Every dad worth his salt has a whistle. Charlie Healy, if you don't have one, you've got to develop one. I don't want to see you shaking your head. You go home and you work on it. Or you're underserving Henry. Every dad worth his salt has a whistle. You have to. You have to. We were on the subway in Washington, D.C. this week. And Jen and the kids were in a seat. And I was standing in the door because I had the stroller that I had to hold up. And I wanted Lily to see something. So I just gave her a little. And it cut through just that loud. but it cut through everything. She's reading a book. She looks up right at me. She knew it was me. And I was like, yes, I'm a good dad. That's all you need. You don't need to know. I didn't snap at her or be too hard on her at any point in the trip. You don't even need to know that. I'm a good dad because she responded to that whistle. I can remember being in a park when I was a kid at the ballpark or something like that running around and I would hear my dad's whistle and I knew, I knew, I know Rayvon has a whistle. I knew that I had about 10 seconds to get my butt to the car or it was going to get tore up. Like I knew that, right? Every dad worth his salt has a whistle. We hear it and we know. When we've been walking with God long enough, we know his voice. We don't have to put him to the test anymore. We just say, yes, Lord, okay, open the door and I will walk through it. Do you want me to take this job? Do you want me to do this thing? Do you want me to fix this relationship? When we've been walking with him long enough, we know his voice. It's just, I don't think it's describable. When people say, how do you know you hear from God? When you've put them to the test enough times and you've learned to recognize that impulse in your life and in your heart, you learn when it's the Holy Spirit and when it's not. But that's just a repetition thing. It's just a time thing. We've spoken to spiritually mature people. We've consulted his word. We've we've put him to the test and over time we learn to identify his voice finally as we progress through it you expect to hear from God now this one's wild to me I've never known anyone that was like this but it's in the Bible so it's's true. 2 Kings 4.27. I'm going to read it to you. This will seem unremarkable, but you'll see where I'm going. 2 Kings 4.27. So the widow is coming back. Her son has died. And when she reached the man of God at the mountain, she took hold of his feet. Gehazi came over to push her away, but the man of God said, leave her alone. She is in bitter distress, but the Lord has hidden it from me and has not told me why. So he's going through his day. The widow that he helped with the oil earlier in the chapter, her son dies, and she comes to Elisha in distress. And she grabs his feet, and Gehazi was his assistant, his right-hand man, and he goes to push her away. Like, that's not appropriate. Don't do that. And Elisha holds him off and says, don't do that. She's in bitter distress. And this is a phrase I will, it will never not impact me when I see it. And when I think about it, the Lord has hid it from me and I'm not sure why. Do you understand that Elisha walked so closely with the Lord and heard his voice so regularly that he went through his day and listening and expecting to hear things from God. He is surprised that God did not tell him about the death of this boy that he is close to and that he loves. He's surprised that God didn't. Can you imagine walking through your day and going, oh, so-and-so just got diagnosed with cancer, I'm going to call him. That just occurring to you because you can hear God's voice that clearly, but that's who Elisha was and that's who we should strive to be. I know that that feels like a very long way off for most, if not all of us, but I believe it's possible based on the example of Elisha to listen to God so intently and so regularly and to know his voice so well that he begins to tell us things that we're not even asking about. And the last thing I would say about hearing God's voice and how do we discern it is something that I say very regularly. God often speaks in stereo. God often speaks in stereo. If you're a new Christian, you want to know, or you're a newly engaged Christian, you want to know how to hear God's voice and discern his will. Know that he speaks in stereo. If you have multiple mature friends saying the same thing, that's stereo. If you have a friend saying something and you're reading scripture and you're not even seeking out an answer for this, but a verse jumps off the page in a new way that's in some way directly applies to your situation, we call that, my buddy Harris calls that a God wink. Just God winking at you going, yeah, I got you. I'm taking care of you. That's my voice. You can trust it. Or you're having a conversation and it comes up and this person says a thing and you're like, you didn't even know I was dealing with that, but that's exactly what I'm dealing with right now. This must be a God thing. Yeah, it must be. Or you come to church and I'm preaching about something and it happens to be exactly what you're dealing with that week, which happens all the time. People come up to me afterwards and go, you have no idea, but either my wife called you and told you to preach that to me, or the Holy Spirit is speaking to you because that's exactly what I needed. God often speaks in stereo. And if you find yourself in a season of indecision, if you find yourself not knowing what God's will is, but you've heard the same thing from multiple sources, it might not be that you don't know what to do. It might just be that you don't have the courage to do it yet. Because like I said, this sermon is not really about learning to discern the voice of God. It's about challenging ourselves to walk in confidence once we've heard it. These are the ways that we hear it. And if God is speaking to you in stereo, then you already know what you should be doing. So I'm going to pray for us. I'm going to pray for those of you who are in seasons of indecision that God will bring some clarity, that he will speak to you in stereo and multiple trusted sources. And I'm going to pray that for those of you who want to learn the voice of God will have opportunities even this week to begin to hear him and put him to the test and walk in faith. Let's pray. Father, thank you for this morning. Thank you for speaking to us. Thank you for being a God who hears, but also a God who speaks. God, give us ears to hear you. Give us hearts to obey you. Help us walk in confidence once we've heard from you. God, if there is someone here, as a matter of fact, I know there are people here who find themselves in these seasons of indecision. Would you give them clarity for those choices? Would you give them confidence to walk according to your will? And would you make your will abundantly clear to them? Father, for those of us who are learning to hear your voice, would you give us a chance even this week to hear it? Would you give us a chance to put you to the test so that we might walk in faith and so learn to hear your voice more and more? Would we be like your sheep who know your voice and respond to it? And one day, maybe, God, we can be like Elisha and even have the boldness to expect to hear from you. We pray these things in your son's name. Amen.

Well, good morning. My name is Nate. I get to be one of the pastors here. Gibby, I got to hand it to you. It takes a real man to bracket himself with people with better voices than him week after week. I thought Holly and Dave sounded great this morning. Fun fact about David, I'm pretty sure that this is true. If it's not, Katie, please don't publicly correct me. But I'm pretty sure that they met at a bar or a restaurant where David was singing karaoke to Backstreet Boys. And she said, I need to know about that guy. That's true, right? I can't believe that's true. I love that story so much. And I just think that every time he's up here singing, you should know that that voice got him a family. OK, That's pretty great. That's pretty great. This morning, we are starting a new series called Frequently Asked Questions. We thought it would be good and hopefully helpful to take some time here following Easter as we kind of finish up spring, move into the summer to answer questions that Christians often ask, but sometimes are too afraid to ask them like in a small group setting or ask somebody that they know because sometimes there's things that we feel like we should know and we don't and we don't want to admit that we don't. So we just kind of go along with it and pretend like we know things when we really don't know things. And so part of what we want to do is stop and answer those questions so you don't have to ask them out loud. We want you to keep your dignity, and we're just going to help you along the best we can. To get these questions, we did poll our small groups and ask our small groups to respond and give us your questions back. I think we had about 33% participation on that. So the ones who helped, thank you. The ones who didn't, thanks for nothing. I hope you hate this series because you could have fixed it. So then we got all the responses back and we kind of grouped them together, the staff and I did, and put them up on the whiteboard and we saw, okay, where are the redundancies? What are we seeing a lot of interest in? And we tried to talk about the things that came up the most. Now, I will tell you up front, we're not touching on any hard topics. Some of you guys snuck some questions in there about revelation or culture or whatever, like, hey, let's see if Nate will do this one. No, I will not do that one. But if those questions are so burning to you that you really do want to know, I would love to get coffee or lunch with you or let you come to my office and let's chat about it. So if you have a question that is serious to you and you really do want to discuss it, I would love to discuss it. I love discussing things way more than I love actually working. So if you want to take up some time in the afternoon and I call that work and I get to talk, this is fantastic. Okay, so if there's something you want to talk about, I want to talk about it with you if it doesn't get addressed in this series. And what I'll probably do is put out the schedule for the sermons so you guys will know what we're discussing and when we're discussing it. And then you'll know if there's something that we're not going to discuss that you would like to. This morning's question is kind of an amalgamation of a bunch of different questions that all mean, how can I discern God's will for my life? It's questions like, how do I know when I'm hearing the voice of God versus when I'm just dealing with my own thoughts? How can I know God's will and move in the direction that he's encouraging me to move in with confidence, knowing that it's something that he wants me to do? Essentially, how can I discern God's will for my life? How can I be sure that I'm hearing his voice? This question is a question that comes up a lot. Almost every time I do a sermon or I mention being kingdom builders, we need to build God's kingdom. And that's my goal for everybody who calls grace home is that God would slowly but surely mold you into someone who is passionate about building God's kingdom, who understands that that's why you were placed on this earth to build his kingdom, not your own. But I always get, okay, I want to build God's kingdom. How do I do that? What do I do? And the question that they're asking is, how can I get God's discernment on his will for my life? It's this question. So I think that this question, how can I be sure that I know God's will? How can I hear God's voice? I think it kind of comes up really in two big ways in our life. The first time it comes up is when we first become a Christian or we first begin to take our faith seriously. Because when I say that, what I mean is a lot of us were saved, became a Christian as children, but we didn't really click into that Christianity until adulthood or until high school or until college. And so there's some point in our life at which we began to take our faith seriously or we drifted away from a devout faith and now we're clicking back in. We never lost our faith. We just didn't prioritize it the same way. And now we're clicking back in and it occurs to us, man, God has a will and a plan for my life and I need to know what that is. So how do I hear from God? How do I learn from him? How can I walk with confidence in his direction and in obedience? And so one way that we begin to ask this question of how can I hear God's voice is when we first kind of come online as a Christian and start to realize that God does have a direction and a will for us, and we need to tap into that. So how do we hear it? The other time in life that this question becomes really important is when we are faced with a very difficult decision. Or maybe we even find ourselves languishing in a period of indecision in our life, where we just don't know what to do. Do I take the job or do I stay where I'm at? And what I would say there just real quickly is if that job is going to take you away from grace, God does not want you to take that job. As your pastor, I'm just telling you that. I want to be direct. Do I take the job or do I not? Do I fix this relationship or do I not? Do I have that conversation with someone or do I avoid it? Do I interject myself in this situation or do I stay out? How do I move forward with my child is making this decision. I don't want them to make that decision, but they're a grown up or they're close to it. And I don't know how to be their parent right now, what do I do? And so in a room this size with this many people, I'm certain that there are some of you who may or may not be languishing, but you're certainly existing in a season of indecision. Or you may be facing a big decision, and you're just not sure how to discern God's will for that decision. You're not sure how to hear his voice. And hopefully all of us are in places where we do try to listen to God. We do try to discern his will for the big decisions and the small decisions in our life. So the way I thought about this sermon is if you and I were to down for lunch, and you were to give me one of those two scenarios. I'm newer to the faith. I hear people talking about praying and hearing from God. I don't really know how that works. How do I hear from God? That's one question. Or we sit down for lunch, and you go, I'm facing this decision. I don't know what to do. How can I discern God's will for my life? Okay, that's another question. But I would answer both those questions in the same way. And so this morning is really just practical advice. This is a highly practical sermon. And I hope and pray that it's helpful for you if you're in either of those seasons. And if you're not, I hope it's a good reminder and some things that you'll grab onto that I can give you to think about as you face decisions in the future. So if you were to ask me, hey, how do I know God's will for my life? How can I hear his voice in either this situation or in general? I would say, well, I think it's progressive. I think we have to learn. I think there's a system. And I think the Bible teaches us. The Bible gives us enough information, but I don't have to guess at how we hear from God. The Bible shows us how we hear from God. So the first thing I would say is the very first thing to do when you're facing a decision or when you want to start listening to the voice of God, I think one of the very first things we do is know that we hear from the spiritually mature. We hear God's word and God's voice and God's will from the spiritually mature people that we have in our life. I'll show you where we see this. 2 Kings chapter 4. I'm going to be looking at verses 2 through 4. So this woman, this woman comes up to Elisha. Elisha, and you can just leave that up there, Andrea. I'll get to it in just a second. I false started you on that. I'm sorry. Elisha is one of the great prophets in the Old Testament. Elijah and Elisha are some of the great prophets in the Old Testament. They're underrated and underappreciated because they don't have a book named after them, but they're probably the two greatest prophets that we have. They're incredible and their lives are amazing. And we see their stories in 1 and 2 Kings. Elisha is going about his day and a woman, a widow, comes up to him and she says, my husband has died. I have no money. My creditors are after me. I'm afraid I'm going to be homeless and destitute. What should I do? What can I do? And this is how Elisha responds beginning in verse 2. She's afraid she's going to have to give her boys over as Testament. This widow comes to Elisha and she says, I'm poor, my husband's dead, I'm destitute, and I'm afraid I'm going to have to give my sons over to slavery to pay my debts off. I don't know what to do. And Elisha says, okay, I want you to get, what do you have? Do you have a jar of oil? Great. Go around to your neighbors, ask if you can have access to their recycling bins and get all the milk, get all the gallon jugs you could find. This is essentially what's happening. Get all the jars that you can find from your neighbors, bring them to your house, go into a room by yourself, shut the door behind you and begin to pour the oil from your jar into these other jars. And so she does, as she's told, it probably doesn't make any sense to her. She probably thinks this sounds crazy, but she does it. And it's one of the great miracles of the old Testament that no matter how much she poured, there was still oil in her jar. And all the jars were filled. And then she says, I've done it. I filled all the jars I could find. He says, okay, go and sell that oil and take a chunk of it and pay off your debts. And there should be enough remaining for you to live well for a while until you can figure something else out. And so she was taken care of, but she was taken care of by going to a spiritually mature person and saying, what should I do? And then having the courage to do what she was told. And what you're going to see is that this question isn't as much about how do I know God's will for my life? This sermon and this question is really about, do you have the courage to walk in obedience when it's clear? Because a lot of times it is clear to us what we need to do. We just keep praying, hoping for a different answer because we don't want to do the thing. She did the thing. It was crazy, but she did it. And so similarly in our lives, if we want to hear from God, if we want to know what to do in a difficult decision, we should go to the spiritually mature people in our life. I have a friend named Tyler. And Tyler is, he's the most trusted recommender I have in my life. I will do, and he does research about everything. Two or three years ago, we moved into our new house. I was in an airport, and I had been doing research on security systems. Jen said she wanted an alarm on the house, so I was trying to figure out the best way to do this and how to get this accomplished. Apparently, this is not much of a security system for us, so we need a little bit extra. And I'm in an airport. I can't remember which airport I'm in, and I'm not sure what to do, and I think, I know, I'll call Tyler. I'm certain that Tyler has done research on this. So I called him, and 45 minutes later, we are still talking about security systems from all the research that he's done. He was delighted to have the conversation. I kept saying, dude, I'm so sorry I'm taking up your time on this. I know this is silly. He's like, no, no, no, I love this. Anyways, so the ring system, and he's getting back into it. Tyler, if he tells me, hey, dude, you need to read this book. Hey, man, you need to listen to this podcast. Hey, I watched this show, and it was great. I always say, don't say another word. I don't want to know what it's about. I don't need to know what it's about. I will consume it tomorrow. He is the number one recommender in my life. If Tyler says it about silly, frivolous stuff, there's no one that knows more about less important things than Tyler. So I just go with whatever he says. We need spiritual Tylers in our lives. When we face indecision, we go to them. They've done the work. They've done the research. They're in the word. They're a man or a woman of prayer. They know how to hear from God. They've matured past us. We go trust their voice when we can't trust our own. We go to spiritually mature people and we ask them what they think, trusting their ability to hear from God. If you feel like I have no idea how to hear from God, the first thing you do, go talk to spiritually mature people who know God's word and who are prayed up. Before I took this job, when it was offered to me, before I agreed to come, I went to six different senior pastors who are far more experienced than me. And I put everything in front of them. And I said, does this seem wise? Do you think this is a good idea? I went to spiritually mature people who know better than me. As a spiritually mature Christian trying to discern God's word, I went to people who had already moved beyond me and asked them what they thought. And I sought their counsel. Proverbs has a lot to say about seeking wise counsel. So if we want to hear from God, we go to wise people. The other place we go, and the only reason I didn't put this one first is because sometimes you don't know where to go in God's word. And so sometimes we need a spiritually mature person to direct us there. But the other place we go to hear from God is to know that we hear from God's word. What do we hear from God? We hear from his word. Look at Luke chapter five, verses four through six. Simon Peter had been out fishing all night and he comes back and Jesus sends him back to throw out the nets. In verse 4, when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, put out into deep water and let down the nets for a catch. Simon answered, Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything, but because you say so, I will let down the nets. When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. A lot of us know this story. A lot of us know this story. We've seen this before. But what I want you to see is Peter is responding to the very words of God, the words of the Savior. He gets done with the night of fishing and Jesus says, you didn't catch anything, go back out, cast in deep water. Which, by the way, deep water's further away, so it's no small thing that he's asking after a full night of fishing. And Peter says, we just did that, but since you told me to, I will. And he has the courage and the fidelity to obey. Which, again, is what this question is really about. Once you have discerned God's voice, do you have the courage to walk in accordance with it? They go out, they cast the nets, just like Jesus told them to, and they caught more than they could ever imagine catching before. The nets were breaking from pulling in the fish. And so the example here is when God speaks to us, we should listen. And we have the benefit of this whole Bible. And we believe about this Bible that it is inspired and it is authoritative and that these words are God's words. And so if we can find it in the Bible, God is speaking to us. And there are some things that we're trying to discern God's will on. And there are very clear passages on that thing. I've had people come to me before and say, should I forgive so-and-so? This happened in my past. I can't forgive them. Do you think God wants me to forgive them? Well, there's a passage for that. That's easy. You go to where Peter asked Jesus that very question, where Peter says, hey, if someone sins against me, I know I should forgive them. But if they do the same sin, how many more times should I forgive them for the same thing? And Peter says, should I do it up to seven times? Thinking this is a generous offer. And Jesus says, I tell you the truth, you should forgive them 70 times seven times. Which means as many times as they commit the offense, you should forgive them. So if you come to me and you go, is it the Lord's will for me to forgive this person? And a lot of times that question is not asked lightly. That question is not asked lightly. Sometimes it's stupid. Sometimes it's, you know, my boyfriend and my girlfriend broke up with me and I can't forgive them. Okay, we'll be a grownup. But other times it's really, really serious stuff. It's stuff from childhood. It's the worst kinds of betrayal and I can't find it in my heart to forgive. Do you think God wants me to forgive? Yeah, it's in the Bible. It's right there. Do you think God wants me to give, even if it's tight, even if finances are difficult? Does God want me to be a generous person and be a giver? Yeah, I think he does. If I have a lot, if I have an overabundance, and 10% is a serious chunk of money, does God still want me to give 10% even though I'm giving generously compared to all the people around me? Yeah, I think he does. I think that's the baseline in Scripture. I think that's pretty clear. So there's some things that we go back and forth about, what's God's will here, when really it's answered in Scripture. And sometimes a spiritually mature person can point us to the right passage. Sometimes we can point ourselves to the right passage. I'll tell you what's really great in this instance. This is my number one sermon prep tool. It's www.google.com. What does the Bible say about forgiveness? What does the Bible say about fathers and mothers? What does the Bible say about child rearing? Now, I know that that sounds ridiculous, and you have to kind of sort through some stuff sometimes to get something of worth, but very often you'll find that someone has made a list of all the verses that address that topic. And it allows you easily just to see, oh, this is what the Bible says about these things. And when we're trying to discern God's will for our life or what we should do in a certain situation, if we're lucky enough to find a passage that addresses it directly, we can be done wondering what God wants us to do. We just again again, have to have the courage to actually do it. Now, sometimes, sometimes we've grown in our maturity. We believe we've heard from God before. We've been obedient to scripture and we allow it to speak to us and into situations in our life, but we might be facing a decision that isn't specifically covered in the Bible. Do I take that job? Do I address that situation? Do I support them in this or not? Do I invest in my friend's company in this way? What non-profit should I serve in? I want to give, and I want to give generously, but there's so many options. What's the right one? How do I know God's will for that? So there's some questions that are not easily laid out in scripture. And for those, we need to learn to listen to God. And one thing we can do to learn to listen to God is sometimes you test God. Sometimes you test him to see. And this is a biblical thing, because that sounds a little out there, put God to the test, but there's a way in which you can do it, and it's appropriate. There's that famous story in Judges with Gideon. Gideon is a judge that God has raised up to overthrow the Midianite oppressors of his Hebrew people. And Gideon thinks that God wants him to go to battle. He's pretty sure that he's got his army assembled and God wants him to go to battle, but he just wants to be extra sure. So he says, okay, God, I think that this is what you want me to do, but just to be sure, I'm going to go to bed and I'm going to leave a fleece. I'm going to leave a fleece, a rug out in front of my tent. And if I wake up in the morning and that fleece is wet with dew and the ground around it is dry, I will take that as a signal from you that this is what I need to do. So he goes to sleep. He wakes up the next morning. Sure enough, fleece is wet. We know this. The ground is dry. And he says, okay, God, I'm going to go do the thing. That's not what he says because Gideon is like us. Gideon actually says this when he finds the fleece. Look at this verse in Judges 6, verse 39. Then Gideon said to God, I love this part, do not be angry with me. Please don't be mad. Just let me make just one more request. Allow me one more test with the fleece, but this time make the fleece dry and let the ground be covered with dew. So he's like, all right, that was a cool trick that you did with the fleece last night. But just to be sure, can you do the opposite? Can we flip it? Are you that fancy? So he goes to bed. He wakes up the next day. The ground around the fleece is soaked in dew. The fleece is dry. And Gideon knows what he needs to do. He assembles the men and he goes to war. And he goes to war knowing that he has the assurance of God to do this thing. And the wonderful part about putting God to the test is when you put him to the test for very difficult things, we don't have to lead people into war, most of us. But sometimes we have to move our families to different states. Sometimes we have to eat a big thing of humble pie. Sometimes we have to take a new job that we don't know about. Sometimes we have to step off the cliff hoping that God will catch us. And when those times come, it is so helpful to put God to the test and be able to go back to a clear signal that he gave us, yes, this is what I want you to do, move forward. There's been so many times in the life of grace and in my tenure as a senior pastor where I've had to put God to the test and say, if you want this to happen, you're going to be the one that has to do it because I don't see a way forward. And then he's made a path forward. Sometimes we can put God to the test like this. Now, I'm not recommending this, but this is a famous story in my family. And every time I hear this story, I think it's false. I think one of my great aunts or uncles made it up, okay? But my mom swears that it's true. And if you can't trust your mom, who can you trust? I have a great aunt. I forget her name. Maybe Sarah. And my whole family on my mom's side is from the South. My pop all grew up in South Georgia, literally on a dirt floor. My mom all grew up in Red Stick, Baton Rouge, and she's Cajun. So I've got a real good combination of low quality individuals in my ancestry. And my great aunt Sarah was a widow and lived alone. And her house was in disrepair. Her roof looked terrible and I believe was leaking in some places. And she was a woman of faith. She was a devout woman of faith and she went to church every Sunday. And the story goes that one day she got fed up with her roof leaking in the way that it looked. And she marched out in her front yard and she turned and faced her house and she said, Father, everybody around here knows that I'm your daughter. And if this is how you want to see them taking care of your daughter, then that's your business. But I should think that you would want better for me. And then she walks back in the house. Again, I wouldn't try it. Walks back in the house. That was her prayer. It was her test. The next day, no kidding around, she gets a knock at the door. Two dudes from a roofing company. We're new in town. We can see that you need a new roof. We'd love to replace it for free if you'll allow us to use you as a model home and put a sign in your yard. And she says, thank you, Father. Yeah, that'll be fine. She gets a new roof. God wanted her to have that roof, no doubt about it. Sometimes we put them to the test. Here's something that I do sometimes. Sometimes I'll be concerned for a person, or I'll have something that I think I want to say to somebody that's hard. Maybe I see a pattern, and I just want them to know that I see it it and I want them to know that I want to encourage them through it. Or maybe I can just see that they're having a hard time and I want to give them a space to talk about that hard time. But I'm not sure if I need to interject myself. I'm not sure if they want that. You know those prompts that you feel of, I think I should probably talk to that person. I think I need to call them. Or maybe you're in a social gathering and you see somebody and you're like, oh yeah, I wanted to talk to them about this, but I don't know if it's appropriate. I don't know if I should. The prayer that I'll pray when I feel those things is, Father, if you want me to talk to that person, will you make that possible? If I'm in a social gathering and there's somebody that I know I need to talk to, but I can't just walk up to a circle of people and start talking to them about that thing. I will pray, God, if you really do want me to say that to them, will you put me alone with them and give me a window to do that? And then I just know, and I'm sensitive to, if I'm just moving about whatever it might be, a grace's big night out, and this person ends up alone with me. Now, none of you are going to talk to me at Grace's Big Night Out. I'm not talking to him. He might have prayed about this. I'm not going over there. But if there's a door that God opens to that conversation and it becomes appropriate, I have to have the courage to walk through it. Or I'm going to lunch with somebody, and I know that there's something I want to say to them, but I'm not sure if I should, I'll pray, God, if I'm supposed to say what I think you want me to say, will you have them bring it up so that I can walk in confidence into that conversation, knowing that I'm doing the right thing? And see, for me, that's an exercise in discipline, Because I don't know how many of you are like me in that you're messed up and you love confrontation. I love it. I want to say the thing. Like, I don't want to be mean about it. I just want to put my face in the wood chipper and have the conversation. Let's just do it. It's best for everybody. I'm chomping at the bit to have those conversations. So what I'm asking for is like, God, you tell me when I'm let off the leash and I'll go. That's what I'm asking for. Others of you are just, you don't even need a leash. You don't need an electric fence. You're just going to stay in your yard. You're not going, you are so scared of those conversations. But let me tell you something. If God's placed something on your heart that he might want you to say to somebody, and then he opens the door for you to do that, have the courage and the obedience to step through it. Because I can tell you from experience, God uses those conversations. When you're having a holy conversation, a holy confrontation, a holy period of encouragement, it refreshes refreshes you and it refreshes them and it builds both of your faiths and It builds your ability to hear from God God I think you want me to say this then he opens the door then you walk through it and you say it and now that you that exists in your life as a marker of a time that you heard God's voice. And you're starting to learn it. And you're starting to walk in obedience. And he's able to use you as more of a tool as you walk through life. And it builds their faith. Because you can say to them, you know, I just have been thinking about you and praying about you. And this is on my heart and so I just feel like I want to say it. I've never said that and been met with apathy. No one's ever said that to me and I've gone, yeah, I didn't really need to hear that. I think you missed it on that one. It's always right. It's always good. So whether it's a conversation or a situation, it's okay to put God to the test and say, God, if this is truly what you want me to do, can you give me this kind of sign? Can you do this thing? Can you bring this person into my life? Will you have them, if you, I've even done it before too. I've said, God, if you want me to talk to that person about that thing, I'm going to need you to have them call me today. And then an hour later, my phone will ring and I'll see their name and my heart will sink because it's like, shoot, I have to do it. I thought that was, I thought I was going to sneak that one by him. So one thing we can do is we can put God to the test. And as we do that, eventually you learn to hear God on your own. So as we talk progressively about how can we hear from God, eventually we talk to spiritually mature people who know how to hear from God. Then we consult Scripture, God's Word. Then we start putting God to the test to learn when we are and when we are not hearing God's voice. And then eventually we learn to hear God on our own. John 14, 27 says this, or 10, 27, sorry, it's wrong in your notes. My sheep listen to my voice. I know them and they follow me. We are taught, Jesus says that his sheep know his voice, right? That when the sheep are out there, all the shepherds in the world can be yelling, but when our shepherd yells, we know and we look. I've always thought about this as God's dad whistle. Every dad worth his salt has a whistle. Charlie Healy, if you don't have one, you've got to develop one. I don't want to see you shaking your head. You go home and you work on it. Or you're underserving Henry. Every dad worth his salt has a whistle. You have to. You have to. We were on the subway in Washington, D.C. this week. And Jen and the kids were in a seat. And I was standing in the door because I had the stroller that I had to hold up. And I wanted Lily to see something. So I just gave her a little. And it cut through just that loud. but it cut through everything. She's reading a book. She looks up right at me. She knew it was me. And I was like, yes, I'm a good dad. That's all you need. You don't need to know. I didn't snap at her or be too hard on her at any point in the trip. You don't even need to know that. I'm a good dad because she responded to that whistle. I can remember being in a park when I was a kid at the ballpark or something like that running around and I would hear my dad's whistle and I knew, I knew, I know Rayvon has a whistle. I knew that I had about 10 seconds to get my butt to the car or it was going to get tore up. Like I knew that, right? Every dad worth his salt has a whistle. We hear it and we know. When we've been walking with God long enough, we know his voice. We don't have to put him to the test anymore. We just say, yes, Lord, okay, open the door and I will walk through it. Do you want me to take this job? Do you want me to do this thing? Do you want me to fix this relationship? When we've been walking with him long enough, we know his voice. It's just, I don't think it's describable. When people say, how do you know you hear from God? When you've put them to the test enough times and you've learned to recognize that impulse in your life and in your heart, you learn when it's the Holy Spirit and when it's not. But that's just a repetition thing. It's just a time thing. We've spoken to spiritually mature people. We've consulted his word. We've we've put him to the test and over time we learn to identify his voice finally as we progress through it you expect to hear from God now this one's wild to me I've never known anyone that was like this but it's in the Bible so it's's true. 2 Kings 4.27. I'm going to read it to you. This will seem unremarkable, but you'll see where I'm going. 2 Kings 4.27. So the widow is coming back. Her son has died. And when she reached the man of God at the mountain, she took hold of his feet. Gehazi came over to push her away, but the man of God said, leave her alone. She is in bitter distress, but the Lord has hidden it from me and has not told me why. So he's going through his day. The widow that he helped with the oil earlier in the chapter, her son dies, and she comes to Elisha in distress. And she grabs his feet, and Gehazi was his assistant, his right-hand man, and he goes to push her away. Like, that's not appropriate. Don't do that. And Elisha holds him off and says, don't do that. She's in bitter distress. And this is a phrase I will, it will never not impact me when I see it. And when I think about it, the Lord has hid it from me and I'm not sure why. Do you understand that Elisha walked so closely with the Lord and heard his voice so regularly that he went through his day and listening and expecting to hear things from God. He is surprised that God did not tell him about the death of this boy that he is close to and that he loves. He's surprised that God didn't. Can you imagine walking through your day and going, oh, so-and-so just got diagnosed with cancer, I'm going to call him. That just occurring to you because you can hear God's voice that clearly, but that's who Elisha was and that's who we should strive to be. I know that that feels like a very long way off for most, if not all of us, but I believe it's possible based on the example of Elisha to listen to God so intently and so regularly and to know his voice so well that he begins to tell us things that we're not even asking about. And the last thing I would say about hearing God's voice and how do we discern it is something that I say very regularly. God often speaks in stereo. God often speaks in stereo. If you're a new Christian, you want to know, or you're a newly engaged Christian, you want to know how to hear God's voice and discern his will. Know that he speaks in stereo. If you have multiple mature friends saying the same thing, that's stereo. If you have a friend saying something and you're reading scripture and you're not even seeking out an answer for this, but a verse jumps off the page in a new way that's in some way directly applies to your situation, we call that, my buddy Harris calls that a God wink. Just God winking at you going, yeah, I got you. I'm taking care of you. That's my voice. You can trust it. Or you're having a conversation and it comes up and this person says a thing and you're like, you didn't even know I was dealing with that, but that's exactly what I'm dealing with right now. This must be a God thing. Yeah, it must be. Or you come to church and I'm preaching about something and it happens to be exactly what you're dealing with that week, which happens all the time. People come up to me afterwards and go, you have no idea, but either my wife called you and told you to preach that to me, or the Holy Spirit is speaking to you because that's exactly what I needed. God often speaks in stereo. And if you find yourself in a season of indecision, if you find yourself not knowing what God's will is, but you've heard the same thing from multiple sources, it might not be that you don't know what to do. It might just be that you don't have the courage to do it yet. Because like I said, this sermon is not really about learning to discern the voice of God. It's about challenging ourselves to walk in confidence once we've heard it. These are the ways that we hear it. And if God is speaking to you in stereo, then you already know what you should be doing. So I'm going to pray for us. I'm going to pray for those of you who are in seasons of indecision that God will bring some clarity, that he will speak to you in stereo and multiple trusted sources. And I'm going to pray that for those of you who want to learn the voice of God will have opportunities even this week to begin to hear him and put him to the test and walk in faith. Let's pray. Father, thank you for this morning. Thank you for speaking to us. Thank you for being a God who hears, but also a God who speaks. God, give us ears to hear you. Give us hearts to obey you. Help us walk in confidence once we've heard from you. God, if there is someone here, as a matter of fact, I know there are people here who find themselves in these seasons of indecision. Would you give them clarity for those choices? Would you give them confidence to walk according to your will? And would you make your will abundantly clear to them? Father, for those of us who are learning to hear your voice, would you give us a chance even this week to hear it? Would you give us a chance to put you to the test so that we might walk in faith and so learn to hear your voice more and more? Would we be like your sheep who know your voice and respond to it? And one day, maybe, God, we can be like Elisha and even have the boldness to expect to hear from you. We pray these things in your son's name. Amen.

Well, good morning. My name is Nate. I get to be one of the pastors here. Gibby, I got to hand it to you. It takes a real man to bracket himself with people with better voices than him week after week. I thought Holly and Dave sounded great this morning. Fun fact about David, I'm pretty sure that this is true. If it's not, Katie, please don't publicly correct me. But I'm pretty sure that they met at a bar or a restaurant where David was singing karaoke to Backstreet Boys. And she said, I need to know about that guy. That's true, right? I can't believe that's true. I love that story so much. And I just think that every time he's up here singing, you should know that that voice got him a family. OK, That's pretty great. That's pretty great. This morning, we are starting a new series called Frequently Asked Questions. We thought it would be good and hopefully helpful to take some time here following Easter as we kind of finish up spring, move into the summer to answer questions that Christians often ask, but sometimes are too afraid to ask them like in a small group setting or ask somebody that they know because sometimes there's things that we feel like we should know and we don't and we don't want to admit that we don't. So we just kind of go along with it and pretend like we know things when we really don't know things. And so part of what we want to do is stop and answer those questions so you don't have to ask them out loud. We want you to keep your dignity, and we're just going to help you along the best we can. To get these questions, we did poll our small groups and ask our small groups to respond and give us your questions back. I think we had about 33% participation on that. So the ones who helped, thank you. The ones who didn't, thanks for nothing. I hope you hate this series because you could have fixed it. So then we got all the responses back and we kind of grouped them together, the staff and I did, and put them up on the whiteboard and we saw, okay, where are the redundancies? What are we seeing a lot of interest in? And we tried to talk about the things that came up the most. Now, I will tell you up front, we're not touching on any hard topics. Some of you guys snuck some questions in there about revelation or culture or whatever, like, hey, let's see if Nate will do this one. No, I will not do that one. But if those questions are so burning to you that you really do want to know, I would love to get coffee or lunch with you or let you come to my office and let's chat about it. So if you have a question that is serious to you and you really do want to discuss it, I would love to discuss it. I love discussing things way more than I love actually working. So if you want to take up some time in the afternoon and I call that work and I get to talk, this is fantastic. Okay, so if there's something you want to talk about, I want to talk about it with you if it doesn't get addressed in this series. And what I'll probably do is put out the schedule for the sermons so you guys will know what we're discussing and when we're discussing it. And then you'll know if there's something that we're not going to discuss that you would like to. This morning's question is kind of an amalgamation of a bunch of different questions that all mean, how can I discern God's will for my life? It's questions like, how do I know when I'm hearing the voice of God versus when I'm just dealing with my own thoughts? How can I know God's will and move in the direction that he's encouraging me to move in with confidence, knowing that it's something that he wants me to do? Essentially, how can I discern God's will for my life? How can I be sure that I'm hearing his voice? This question is a question that comes up a lot. Almost every time I do a sermon or I mention being kingdom builders, we need to build God's kingdom. And that's my goal for everybody who calls grace home is that God would slowly but surely mold you into someone who is passionate about building God's kingdom, who understands that that's why you were placed on this earth to build his kingdom, not your own. But I always get, okay, I want to build God's kingdom. How do I do that? What do I do? And the question that they're asking is, how can I get God's discernment on his will for my life? It's this question. So I think that this question, how can I be sure that I know God's will? How can I hear God's voice? I think it kind of comes up really in two big ways in our life. The first time it comes up is when we first become a Christian or we first begin to take our faith seriously. Because when I say that, what I mean is a lot of us were saved, became a Christian as children, but we didn't really click into that Christianity until adulthood or until high school or until college. And so there's some point in our life at which we began to take our faith seriously or we drifted away from a devout faith and now we're clicking back in. We never lost our faith. We just didn't prioritize it the same way. And now we're clicking back in and it occurs to us, man, God has a will and a plan for my life and I need to know what that is. So how do I hear from God? How do I learn from him? How can I walk with confidence in his direction and in obedience? And so one way that we begin to ask this question of how can I hear God's voice is when we first kind of come online as a Christian and start to realize that God does have a direction and a will for us, and we need to tap into that. So how do we hear it? The other time in life that this question becomes really important is when we are faced with a very difficult decision. Or maybe we even find ourselves languishing in a period of indecision in our life, where we just don't know what to do. Do I take the job or do I stay where I'm at? And what I would say there just real quickly is if that job is going to take you away from grace, God does not want you to take that job. As your pastor, I'm just telling you that. I want to be direct. Do I take the job or do I not? Do I fix this relationship or do I not? Do I have that conversation with someone or do I avoid it? Do I interject myself in this situation or do I stay out? How do I move forward with my child is making this decision. I don't want them to make that decision, but they're a grown up or they're close to it. And I don't know how to be their parent right now, what do I do? And so in a room this size with this many people, I'm certain that there are some of you who may or may not be languishing, but you're certainly existing in a season of indecision. Or you may be facing a big decision, and you're just not sure how to discern God's will for that decision. You're not sure how to hear his voice. And hopefully all of us are in places where we do try to listen to God. We do try to discern his will for the big decisions and the small decisions in our life. So the way I thought about this sermon is if you and I were to down for lunch, and you were to give me one of those two scenarios. I'm newer to the faith. I hear people talking about praying and hearing from God. I don't really know how that works. How do I hear from God? That's one question. Or we sit down for lunch, and you go, I'm facing this decision. I don't know what to do. How can I discern God's will for my life? Okay, that's another question. But I would answer both those questions in the same way. And so this morning is really just practical advice. This is a highly practical sermon. And I hope and pray that it's helpful for you if you're in either of those seasons. And if you're not, I hope it's a good reminder and some things that you'll grab onto that I can give you to think about as you face decisions in the future. So if you were to ask me, hey, how do I know God's will for my life? How can I hear his voice in either this situation or in general? I would say, well, I think it's progressive. I think we have to learn. I think there's a system. And I think the Bible teaches us. The Bible gives us enough information, but I don't have to guess at how we hear from God. The Bible shows us how we hear from God. So the first thing I would say is the very first thing to do when you're facing a decision or when you want to start listening to the voice of God, I think one of the very first things we do is know that we hear from the spiritually mature. We hear God's word and God's voice and God's will from the spiritually mature people that we have in our life. I'll show you where we see this. 2 Kings chapter 4. I'm going to be looking at verses 2 through 4. So this woman, this woman comes up to Elisha. Elisha, and you can just leave that up there, Andrea. I'll get to it in just a second. I false started you on that. I'm sorry. Elisha is one of the great prophets in the Old Testament. Elijah and Elisha are some of the great prophets in the Old Testament. They're underrated and underappreciated because they don't have a book named after them, but they're probably the two greatest prophets that we have. They're incredible and their lives are amazing. And we see their stories in 1 and 2 Kings. Elisha is going about his day and a woman, a widow, comes up to him and she says, my husband has died. I have no money. My creditors are after me. I'm afraid I'm going to be homeless and destitute. What should I do? What can I do? And this is how Elisha responds beginning in verse 2. She's afraid she's going to have to give her boys over as Testament. This widow comes to Elisha and she says, I'm poor, my husband's dead, I'm destitute, and I'm afraid I'm going to have to give my sons over to slavery to pay my debts off. I don't know what to do. And Elisha says, okay, I want you to get, what do you have? Do you have a jar of oil? Great. Go around to your neighbors, ask if you can have access to their recycling bins and get all the milk, get all the gallon jugs you could find. This is essentially what's happening. Get all the jars that you can find from your neighbors, bring them to your house, go into a room by yourself, shut the door behind you and begin to pour the oil from your jar into these other jars. And so she does, as she's told, it probably doesn't make any sense to her. She probably thinks this sounds crazy, but she does it. And it's one of the great miracles of the old Testament that no matter how much she poured, there was still oil in her jar. And all the jars were filled. And then she says, I've done it. I filled all the jars I could find. He says, okay, go and sell that oil and take a chunk of it and pay off your debts. And there should be enough remaining for you to live well for a while until you can figure something else out. And so she was taken care of, but she was taken care of by going to a spiritually mature person and saying, what should I do? And then having the courage to do what she was told. And what you're going to see is that this question isn't as much about how do I know God's will for my life? This sermon and this question is really about, do you have the courage to walk in obedience when it's clear? Because a lot of times it is clear to us what we need to do. We just keep praying, hoping for a different answer because we don't want to do the thing. She did the thing. It was crazy, but she did it. And so similarly in our lives, if we want to hear from God, if we want to know what to do in a difficult decision, we should go to the spiritually mature people in our life. I have a friend named Tyler. And Tyler is, he's the most trusted recommender I have in my life. I will do, and he does research about everything. Two or three years ago, we moved into our new house. I was in an airport, and I had been doing research on security systems. Jen said she wanted an alarm on the house, so I was trying to figure out the best way to do this and how to get this accomplished. Apparently, this is not much of a security system for us, so we need a little bit extra. And I'm in an airport. I can't remember which airport I'm in, and I'm not sure what to do, and I think, I know, I'll call Tyler. I'm certain that Tyler has done research on this. So I called him, and 45 minutes later, we are still talking about security systems from all the research that he's done. He was delighted to have the conversation. I kept saying, dude, I'm so sorry I'm taking up your time on this. I know this is silly. He's like, no, no, no, I love this. Anyways, so the ring system, and he's getting back into it. Tyler, if he tells me, hey, dude, you need to read this book. Hey, man, you need to listen to this podcast. Hey, I watched this show, and it was great. I always say, don't say another word. I don't want to know what it's about. I don't need to know what it's about. I will consume it tomorrow. He is the number one recommender in my life. If Tyler says it about silly, frivolous stuff, there's no one that knows more about less important things than Tyler. So I just go with whatever he says. We need spiritual Tylers in our lives. When we face indecision, we go to them. They've done the work. They've done the research. They're in the word. They're a man or a woman of prayer. They know how to hear from God. They've matured past us. We go trust their voice when we can't trust our own. We go to spiritually mature people and we ask them what they think, trusting their ability to hear from God. If you feel like I have no idea how to hear from God, the first thing you do, go talk to spiritually mature people who know God's word and who are prayed up. Before I took this job, when it was offered to me, before I agreed to come, I went to six different senior pastors who are far more experienced than me. And I put everything in front of them. And I said, does this seem wise? Do you think this is a good idea? I went to spiritually mature people who know better than me. As a spiritually mature Christian trying to discern God's word, I went to people who had already moved beyond me and asked them what they thought. And I sought their counsel. Proverbs has a lot to say about seeking wise counsel. So if we want to hear from God, we go to wise people. The other place we go, and the only reason I didn't put this one first is because sometimes you don't know where to go in God's word. And so sometimes we need a spiritually mature person to direct us there. But the other place we go to hear from God is to know that we hear from God's word. What do we hear from God? We hear from his word. Look at Luke chapter five, verses four through six. Simon Peter had been out fishing all night and he comes back and Jesus sends him back to throw out the nets. In verse 4, when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, put out into deep water and let down the nets for a catch. Simon answered, Master, we've worked hard all night and haven't caught anything, but because you say so, I will let down the nets. When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break. A lot of us know this story. A lot of us know this story. We've seen this before. But what I want you to see is Peter is responding to the very words of God, the words of the Savior. He gets done with the night of fishing and Jesus says, you didn't catch anything, go back out, cast in deep water. Which, by the way, deep water's further away, so it's no small thing that he's asking after a full night of fishing. And Peter says, we just did that, but since you told me to, I will. And he has the courage and the fidelity to obey. Which, again, is what this question is really about. Once you have discerned God's voice, do you have the courage to walk in accordance with it? They go out, they cast the nets, just like Jesus told them to, and they caught more than they could ever imagine catching before. The nets were breaking from pulling in the fish. And so the example here is when God speaks to us, we should listen. And we have the benefit of this whole Bible. And we believe about this Bible that it is inspired and it is authoritative and that these words are God's words. And so if we can find it in the Bible, God is speaking to us. And there are some things that we're trying to discern God's will on. And there are very clear passages on that thing. I've had people come to me before and say, should I forgive so-and-so? This happened in my past. I can't forgive them. Do you think God wants me to forgive them? Well, there's a passage for that. That's easy. You go to where Peter asked Jesus that very question, where Peter says, hey, if someone sins against me, I know I should forgive them. But if they do the same sin, how many more times should I forgive them for the same thing? And Peter says, should I do it up to seven times? Thinking this is a generous offer. And Jesus says, I tell you the truth, you should forgive them 70 times seven times. Which means as many times as they commit the offense, you should forgive them. So if you come to me and you go, is it the Lord's will for me to forgive this person? And a lot of times that question is not asked lightly. That question is not asked lightly. Sometimes it's stupid. Sometimes it's, you know, my boyfriend and my girlfriend broke up with me and I can't forgive them. Okay, we'll be a grownup. But other times it's really, really serious stuff. It's stuff from childhood. It's the worst kinds of betrayal and I can't find it in my heart to forgive. Do you think God wants me to forgive? Yeah, it's in the Bible. It's right there. Do you think God wants me to give, even if it's tight, even if finances are difficult? Does God want me to be a generous person and be a giver? Yeah, I think he does. If I have a lot, if I have an overabundance, and 10% is a serious chunk of money, does God still want me to give 10% even though I'm giving generously compared to all the people around me? Yeah, I think he does. I think that's the baseline in Scripture. I think that's pretty clear. So there's some things that we go back and forth about, what's God's will here, when really it's answered in Scripture. And sometimes a spiritually mature person can point us to the right passage. Sometimes we can point ourselves to the right passage. I'll tell you what's really great in this instance. This is my number one sermon prep tool. It's www.google.com. What does the Bible say about forgiveness? What does the Bible say about fathers and mothers? What does the Bible say about child rearing? Now, I know that that sounds ridiculous, and you have to kind of sort through some stuff sometimes to get something of worth, but very often you'll find that someone has made a list of all the verses that address that topic. And it allows you easily just to see, oh, this is what the Bible says about these things. And when we're trying to discern God's will for our life or what we should do in a certain situation, if we're lucky enough to find a passage that addresses it directly, we can be done wondering what God wants us to do. We just again again, have to have the courage to actually do it. Now, sometimes, sometimes we've grown in our maturity. We believe we've heard from God before. We've been obedient to scripture and we allow it to speak to us and into situations in our life, but we might be facing a decision that isn't specifically covered in the Bible. Do I take that job? Do I address that situation? Do I support them in this or not? Do I invest in my friend's company in this way? What non-profit should I serve in? I want to give, and I want to give generously, but there's so many options. What's the right one? How do I know God's will for that? So there's some questions that are not easily laid out in scripture. And for those, we need to learn to listen to God. And one thing we can do to learn to listen to God is sometimes you test God. Sometimes you test him to see. And this is a biblical thing, because that sounds a little out there, put God to the test, but there's a way in which you can do it, and it's appropriate. There's that famous story in Judges with Gideon. Gideon is a judge that God has raised up to overthrow the Midianite oppressors of his Hebrew people. And Gideon thinks that God wants him to go to battle. He's pretty sure that he's got his army assembled and God wants him to go to battle, but he just wants to be extra sure. So he says, okay, God, I think that this is what you want me to do, but just to be sure, I'm going to go to bed and I'm going to leave a fleece. I'm going to leave a fleece, a rug out in front of my tent. And if I wake up in the morning and that fleece is wet with dew and the ground around it is dry, I will take that as a signal from you that this is what I need to do. So he goes to sleep. He wakes up the next morning. Sure enough, fleece is wet. We know this. The ground is dry. And he says, okay, God, I'm going to go do the thing. That's not what he says because Gideon is like us. Gideon actually says this when he finds the fleece. Look at this verse in Judges 6, verse 39. Then Gideon said to God, I love this part, do not be angry with me. Please don't be mad. Just let me make just one more request. Allow me one more test with the fleece, but this time make the fleece dry and let the ground be covered with dew. So he's like, all right, that was a cool trick that you did with the fleece last night. But just to be sure, can you do the opposite? Can we flip it? Are you that fancy? So he goes to bed. He wakes up the next day. The ground around the fleece is soaked in dew. The fleece is dry. And Gideon knows what he needs to do. He assembles the men and he goes to war. And he goes to war knowing that he has the assurance of God to do this thing. And the wonderful part about putting God to the test is when you put him to the test for very difficult things, we don't have to lead people into war, most of us. But sometimes we have to move our families to different states. Sometimes we have to eat a big thing of humble pie. Sometimes we have to take a new job that we don't know about. Sometimes we have to step off the cliff hoping that God will catch us. And when those times come, it is so helpful to put God to the test and be able to go back to a clear signal that he gave us, yes, this is what I want you to do, move forward. There's been so many times in the life of grace and in my tenure as a senior pastor where I've had to put God to the test and say, if you want this to happen, you're going to be the one that has to do it because I don't see a way forward. And then he's made a path forward. Sometimes we can put God to the test like this. Now, I'm not recommending this, but this is a famous story in my family. And every time I hear this story, I think it's false. I think one of my great aunts or uncles made it up, okay? But my mom swears that it's true. And if you can't trust your mom, who can you trust? I have a great aunt. I forget her name. Maybe Sarah. And my whole family on my mom's side is from the South. My pop all grew up in South Georgia, literally on a dirt floor. My mom all grew up in Red Stick, Baton Rouge, and she's Cajun. So I've got a real good combination of low quality individuals in my ancestry. And my great aunt Sarah was a widow and lived alone. And her house was in disrepair. Her roof looked terrible and I believe was leaking in some places. And she was a woman of faith. She was a devout woman of faith and she went to church every Sunday. And the story goes that one day she got fed up with her roof leaking in the way that it looked. And she marched out in her front yard and she turned and faced her house and she said, Father, everybody around here knows that I'm your daughter. And if this is how you want to see them taking care of your daughter, then that's your business. But I should think that you would want better for me. And then she walks back in the house. Again, I wouldn't try it. Walks back in the house. That was her prayer. It was her test. The next day, no kidding around, she gets a knock at the door. Two dudes from a roofing company. We're new in town. We can see that you need a new roof. We'd love to replace it for free if you'll allow us to use you as a model home and put a sign in your yard. And she says, thank you, Father. Yeah, that'll be fine. She gets a new roof. God wanted her to have that roof, no doubt about it. Sometimes we put them to the test. Here's something that I do sometimes. Sometimes I'll be concerned for a person, or I'll have something that I think I want to say to somebody that's hard. Maybe I see a pattern, and I just want them to know that I see it it and I want them to know that I want to encourage them through it. Or maybe I can just see that they're having a hard time and I want to give them a space to talk about that hard time. But I'm not sure if I need to interject myself. I'm not sure if they want that. You know those prompts that you feel of, I think I should probably talk to that person. I think I need to call them. Or maybe you're in a social gathering and you see somebody and you're like, oh yeah, I wanted to talk to them about this, but I don't know if it's appropriate. I don't know if I should. The prayer that I'll pray when I feel those things is, Father, if you want me to talk to that person, will you make that possible? If I'm in a social gathering and there's somebody that I know I need to talk to, but I can't just walk up to a circle of people and start talking to them about that thing. I will pray, God, if you really do want me to say that to them, will you put me alone with them and give me a window to do that? And then I just know, and I'm sensitive to, if I'm just moving about whatever it might be, a grace's big night out, and this person ends up alone with me. Now, none of you are going to talk to me at Grace's Big Night Out. I'm not talking to him. He might have prayed about this. I'm not going over there. But if there's a door that God opens to that conversation and it becomes appropriate, I have to have the courage to walk through it. Or I'm going to lunch with somebody, and I know that there's something I want to say to them, but I'm not sure if I should, I'll pray, God, if I'm supposed to say what I think you want me to say, will you have them bring it up so that I can walk in confidence into that conversation, knowing that I'm doing the right thing? And see, for me, that's an exercise in discipline, Because I don't know how many of you are like me in that you're messed up and you love confrontation. I love it. I want to say the thing. Like, I don't want to be mean about it. I just want to put my face in the wood chipper and have the conversation. Let's just do it. It's best for everybody. I'm chomping at the bit to have those conversations. So what I'm asking for is like, God, you tell me when I'm let off the leash and I'll go. That's what I'm asking for. Others of you are just, you don't even need a leash. You don't need an electric fence. You're just going to stay in your yard. You're not going, you are so scared of those conversations. But let me tell you something. If God's placed something on your heart that he might want you to say to somebody, and then he opens the door for you to do that, have the courage and the obedience to step through it. Because I can tell you from experience, God uses those conversations. When you're having a holy conversation, a holy confrontation, a holy period of encouragement, it refreshes refreshes you and it refreshes them and it builds both of your faiths and It builds your ability to hear from God God I think you want me to say this then he opens the door then you walk through it and you say it and now that you that exists in your life as a marker of a time that you heard God's voice. And you're starting to learn it. And you're starting to walk in obedience. And he's able to use you as more of a tool as you walk through life. And it builds their faith. Because you can say to them, you know, I just have been thinking about you and praying about you. And this is on my heart and so I just feel like I want to say it. I've never said that and been met with apathy. No one's ever said that to me and I've gone, yeah, I didn't really need to hear that. I think you missed it on that one. It's always right. It's always good. So whether it's a conversation or a situation, it's okay to put God to the test and say, God, if this is truly what you want me to do, can you give me this kind of sign? Can you do this thing? Can you bring this person into my life? Will you have them, if you, I've even done it before too. I've said, God, if you want me to talk to that person about that thing, I'm going to need you to have them call me today. And then an hour later, my phone will ring and I'll see their name and my heart will sink because it's like, shoot, I have to do it. I thought that was, I thought I was going to sneak that one by him. So one thing we can do is we can put God to the test. And as we do that, eventually you learn to hear God on your own. So as we talk progressively about how can we hear from God, eventually we talk to spiritually mature people who know how to hear from God. Then we consult Scripture, God's Word. Then we start putting God to the test to learn when we are and when we are not hearing God's voice. And then eventually we learn to hear God on our own. John 14, 27 says this, or 10, 27, sorry, it's wrong in your notes. My sheep listen to my voice. I know them and they follow me. We are taught, Jesus says that his sheep know his voice, right? That when the sheep are out there, all the shepherds in the world can be yelling, but when our shepherd yells, we know and we look. I've always thought about this as God's dad whistle. Every dad worth his salt has a whistle. Charlie Healy, if you don't have one, you've got to develop one. I don't want to see you shaking your head. You go home and you work on it. Or you're underserving Henry. Every dad worth his salt has a whistle. You have to. You have to. We were on the subway in Washington, D.C. this week. And Jen and the kids were in a seat. And I was standing in the door because I had the stroller that I had to hold up. And I wanted Lily to see something. So I just gave her a little. And it cut through just that loud. but it cut through everything. She's reading a book. She looks up right at me. She knew it was me. And I was like, yes, I'm a good dad. That's all you need. You don't need to know. I didn't snap at her or be too hard on her at any point in the trip. You don't even need to know that. I'm a good dad because she responded to that whistle. I can remember being in a park when I was a kid at the ballpark or something like that running around and I would hear my dad's whistle and I knew, I knew, I know Rayvon has a whistle. I knew that I had about 10 seconds to get my butt to the car or it was going to get tore up. Like I knew that, right? Every dad worth his salt has a whistle. We hear it and we know. When we've been walking with God long enough, we know his voice. We don't have to put him to the test anymore. We just say, yes, Lord, okay, open the door and I will walk through it. Do you want me to take this job? Do you want me to do this thing? Do you want me to fix this relationship? When we've been walking with him long enough, we know his voice. It's just, I don't think it's describable. When people say, how do you know you hear from God? When you've put them to the test enough times and you've learned to recognize that impulse in your life and in your heart, you learn when it's the Holy Spirit and when it's not. But that's just a repetition thing. It's just a time thing. We've spoken to spiritually mature people. We've consulted his word. We've we've put him to the test and over time we learn to identify his voice finally as we progress through it you expect to hear from God now this one's wild to me I've never known anyone that was like this but it's in the Bible so it's's true. 2 Kings 4.27. I'm going to read it to you. This will seem unremarkable, but you'll see where I'm going. 2 Kings 4.27. So the widow is coming back. Her son has died. And when she reached the man of God at the mountain, she took hold of his feet. Gehazi came over to push her away, but the man of God said, leave her alone. She is in bitter distress, but the Lord has hidden it from me and has not told me why. So he's going through his day. The widow that he helped with the oil earlier in the chapter, her son dies, and she comes to Elisha in distress. And she grabs his feet, and Gehazi was his assistant, his right-hand man, and he goes to push her away. Like, that's not appropriate. Don't do that. And Elisha holds him off and says, don't do that. She's in bitter distress. And this is a phrase I will, it will never not impact me when I see it. And when I think about it, the Lord has hid it from me and I'm not sure why. Do you understand that Elisha walked so closely with the Lord and heard his voice so regularly that he went through his day and listening and expecting to hear things from God. He is surprised that God did not tell him about the death of this boy that he is close to and that he loves. He's surprised that God didn't. Can you imagine walking through your day and going, oh, so-and-so just got diagnosed with cancer, I'm going to call him. That just occurring to you because you can hear God's voice that clearly, but that's who Elisha was and that's who we should strive to be. I know that that feels like a very long way off for most, if not all of us, but I believe it's possible based on the example of Elisha to listen to God so intently and so regularly and to know his voice so well that he begins to tell us things that we're not even asking about. And the last thing I would say about hearing God's voice and how do we discern it is something that I say very regularly. God often speaks in stereo. God often speaks in stereo. If you're a new Christian, you want to know, or you're a newly engaged Christian, you want to know how to hear God's voice and discern his will. Know that he speaks in stereo. If you have multiple mature friends saying the same thing, that's stereo. If you have a friend saying something and you're reading scripture and you're not even seeking out an answer for this, but a verse jumps off the page in a new way that's in some way directly applies to your situation, we call that, my buddy Harris calls that a God wink. Just God winking at you going, yeah, I got you. I'm taking care of you. That's my voice. You can trust it. Or you're having a conversation and it comes up and this person says a thing and you're like, you didn't even know I was dealing with that, but that's exactly what I'm dealing with right now. This must be a God thing. Yeah, it must be. Or you come to church and I'm preaching about something and it happens to be exactly what you're dealing with that week, which happens all the time. People come up to me afterwards and go, you have no idea, but either my wife called you and told you to preach that to me, or the Holy Spirit is speaking to you because that's exactly what I needed. God often speaks in stereo. And if you find yourself in a season of indecision, if you find yourself not knowing what God's will is, but you've heard the same thing from multiple sources, it might not be that you don't know what to do. It might just be that you don't have the courage to do it yet. Because like I said, this sermon is not really about learning to discern the voice of God. It's about challenging ourselves to walk in confidence once we've heard it. These are the ways that we hear it. And if God is speaking to you in stereo, then you already know what you should be doing. So I'm going to pray for us. I'm going to pray for those of you who are in seasons of indecision that God will bring some clarity, that he will speak to you in stereo and multiple trusted sources. And I'm going to pray that for those of you who want to learn the voice of God will have opportunities even this week to begin to hear him and put him to the test and walk in faith. Let's pray. Father, thank you for this morning. Thank you for speaking to us. Thank you for being a God who hears, but also a God who speaks. God, give us ears to hear you. Give us hearts to obey you. Help us walk in confidence once we've heard from you. God, if there is someone here, as a matter of fact, I know there are people here who find themselves in these seasons of indecision. Would you give them clarity for those choices? Would you give them confidence to walk according to your will? And would you make your will abundantly clear to them? Father, for those of us who are learning to hear your voice, would you give us a chance even this week to hear it? Would you give us a chance to put you to the test so that we might walk in faith and so learn to hear your voice more and more? Would we be like your sheep who know your voice and respond to it? And one day, maybe, God, we can be like Elisha and even have the boldness to expect to hear from you. We pray these things in your son's name. Amen.
