Thank you very much. Well, good morning. It's good to see everybody. My name is Nate. I get to be one of the pastors here. There you go. Now they can see me on video. Isn't that so much better? If you are joining us online, thank you for doing that. And I would just say gently for those who are joining us online, if you're doing that consistently, there is nothing quite like worshiping together as a family. So if you can get here and worship with us, do that because it's a sweet, sweet time, and it's my favorite part of the week, every week when I get to worship with you guys. We are in the third part of our series called Traits of Grace, and these are kind of five distinctive characteristics that make grace, grace. I am a firm believer, and will wholeheartedly share it with whomever is curious that grace is not, we're not nailing it as a church. Okay. We haven't like figured out how to do church the right way and all the other churches are doing it wrong. Okay. They're, they're worse than us. You guys are the good Christians who've really figured out how to love Jesus well. And the other churches are apostate and we should pray for them. Like we don't believe that. We believe that there are plenty of churches in the city of Raleigh that are doing wonderful jobs, pushing people towards Jesus and making disciples. I would even say that there's got to be plenty of them who are doing better than us. But you guys are here this morning. So we're going to make the best of it together while you think about a better church to go to next week. But there's plenty of great churches doing plenty of great things, and so I think it's important for churches to figure out what is it that makes us us? What has God wired us to do? A few weeks ago, we talked about being kingdom builders, and I kind of left you guys with the question of what is your good work? Ephesians 2.10, for we are God's workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works that we might walk in them. And so we asked, what is your good work? And I think similarly, it's wise for churches to ask, what is our good work? Every church is supposed to make disciples, but how would God have us go about it? How has he uniquely wired and gathered and impassioned us to do it? And as we were having the discussion about what makes grace, grace last fall, we came up as a staff and then as elders with these five traits. So we've talked about the fact that partners at grace are kingdom builders. Then we talked last week about how partners at Grace are conduits of Grace. We stay connected to Jesus and we pour out all the love and all the goodness and all the grace that we receive from Jesus onto others. We are conduits of Grace. And so this week we arrive at the third trait that we feel like we are at Grace. And I realized this morning as I was reviewing and preparing that I didn't put this in your notes anywhere. So I don't know if this is going to be unofficial or something. I hope I haven't done something wrong and now this one doesn't count. But we are people of devotion. That's the third trait of grace. We are people of devotion. And when I say devotion, obviously that can mean multiple things, but it really means what it meant back in 1985. We are people who have devotions. You have heard me say many times, if you've been at grace for any period of time, that the single greatest habit that anyone can develop in their life, a lot of you can finish this sentence, is to get up every day and spend time in God's word and time in prayer. That is the most important thing, the most important habit that any single one of us can develop at any point in our life. And I believe that to be true, and we hit on that to be true, and we remind you of that all the time, because I also try to remind you that I am not enough. You can't come listen to me talk for 30 minutes a week and know the breadth and the depth of the God that's waiting for you in this text. You can't listen to whatever I choose to pick out and talk about just this little tiny snippet within here and somehow hope to understand the whole book. That's just not how that works. So it takes more than 30 minutes a week. It takes more than just one small group a week, which we'd love to say is an hour a week talking about spiritual things, but really it's about 45 minutes a week talking about whatever the heck and then about 15 minutes of good spiritual conversation. If you're in a small group, you know what I'm talking about. So that's not enough. We've got to spend time in God's Word, and we've got to spend time in God's presence through prayer. So when we thought about what are we at Grace, what do we want partners to be at Grace? We want to be people of devotion. We want to be people who develop that habit. And as we think about it this morning, I don't know about you, but I feel that when God is speaking to us, he often speaks in stereo. When someone will ask me, hey, how do I hear God's voice? How do I know what he's saying to me? How do I discern God's will for my life? I often will say, one of the first things I'll tell him is, God speaks, when he speaks to me, he speaks in stereo. He tells me from this source and this source and this source and this source, and it just kind of continues to come up in my life. And one of the themes that has been coming up for me in my life before the summer, but in particular the summer, you guys gave me the great privilege and rest of not having to preach in the month of July to just kind of settle and work on some other things in the church and allow God to refresh me a little bit. And it was wonderful. And one of the things that I brought out of there and that seems to continue to come up in my sermons that I'm preaching like when I preached on the law a couple weeks ago and I've seen it come through in themes these last couple weeks and then really we're hitting on it again in my Tuesday morning men's Bible study. I have a men's Bible study that meets on Tuesday mornings at 6 30. We meet that early to keep out the riffraff. The only thing the only thing prohibiting you from being there is laziness. So come on and join us. We're not any nicer there either. This is as nice as it gets. But I see this theme in my life and I've seen it in what we're learning at Grace and I thought it worth highlighting this morning, which is simply the beautiful simplicity of abiding. We talked about this last week. We're conduits of grace. And we looked at John 15, where Jesus is speaking to the disciples, particularly four and five. And he says, I am the vine, you are the branches. Abide in me and I in you, and you will bear much fruit. And we talked about this idea of all I have to do is stay connected to Christ, and he's going to produce the fruit in my life that I need to produce. I don't have to think about that. I just focus on abiding in Christ. And I think that there is this beautiful simplicity to that. Because we can make Christianity really complicated, can't we? It can be really challenging and difficult. It can be intimidating to look at this Bible, to open it up, to come to service on a Sunday and the pastor says, turn to Malachi. You're like, I've never even heard of that name in my life. I don't know where that is, right? Just to learn just the names of the 66 books, to learn how to find them all, that there's 37 or 39 in the Old Testament, 27 in the New Testament, to learn all, what are all the sins? What are all the things I'm supposed to do? What are all the things I'm not supposed to do? Who are all the people? And how old was Paul? Did he live to be 900? Or is that some other guy? Like it can be a lot. And one of the things that I have a heart for is adults, people who have already gone through life and made a bunch of decisions. And in your 30s, 40s, 50s or later, you decide this is when I want to get serious about my faith and you start trying to learn Bible. And you don't have the background that I've been learning about this since I was old enough to talk. But it can feel like a steep bell curve when you're trying to learn faith and taking it seriously. So I love the beautiful simplicity of really what God asks us to do, which is to simply abide in him. Just simply, you just, just, just focus on Jesus. Just pursue Jesus. Just love others like Jesus loves you. Just do all that. The rest of this stuff, if you focus on abiding in Christ, the rest of this stuff, the rest of Christianity, the rest of life will take care of itself. Just focus on abiding in Christ. And this is, this is an attitude that we see throughout scripture. We're going to look at two other places today where it's pared down and it's made just this simple. One of my favorite pictures of this in the Bible is in the book of Hebrews. In the book of Hebrews, there's Hebrews chapter 12, verse 1, obviously follows. I don't know if you know this. You have to go to seminary to know this, but chapter 12 of Hebrews follows chapter 11 of Hebrews. And in chapter 11 of Hebrews, we have this really famous passage that's called the Hall of Faith, where the author of Hebrews lists out all of these heroes of the faith and the acts that they performed by faith. And then when we get into 12, and I'll read it in just a minute, but when we get into 12, we see it begin, So it's this idea that we're on the playing field of earth as those in heaven who have come before us are now watching us in real time, which I think is a really cool thought. And here's what the author of Hebrews says. He says, Because we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us throw off the sin and the weight that so easily entangles and run the race that is set before us. And it's language, I think, that we can identify with. It's language that inspires. We're kind of like, okay, I'm on the playing field. I'm supposed to run this race. I'm supposed to live my life. I'm supposed to do the things that God wants me to do. How do I do that? Well, I throw off the sin and the weight that so easily entangles. I need to run in such a way that I can do what God wants me to do, that I can be who God wants me to be, and I need to get rid of all the things that don't help me run my race. And this, again, is an idea that is replete throughout Scripture. It shows up again and again and again. Paul tells us that we are to fight the good fight. He says that he fights the good fight. He tells us that in this race, we are to run as the one who's trying to get the prize, that we are supposed to cling to our faith. We are told to live a life worthy of the calling that we have received. Jesus tells us that other people should see our good works and so glorify our Father who is in heaven. So all throughout Scripture is this simple admonition that we need to live a life worthy of the calling that we've received. We need to run the race. We need to be who God created us to be. We need to determine what are our good works and how do we walk in them. And you can rephrase all of that and we say we need to be good Christians. We need to grow in our faith. We need to move towards Jesus. And we can identify with this. This is, to me, inspiring. It's easy to understand. Yep, I'm running a race and I do that by throwing off the sin and the weight that's so easily entangled. So I got to stop doing those things so I can do the things that God wants me to do. And sometimes, I think more often than not, that's where we stop. I'm going to try really hard at running this race. I'm going to try really hard to be a good Christian. I'm going to try really hard to be a good dad and a good husband and a good friend, a good employee or employer. I'm going to try really hard to be a good citizen. And I'm going to do that by throwing off the sin and the weight that so easily entangles. And we act like the next verse doesn't exist. How are we supposed to do that? By looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith. Even in Hebrews, where it uses this language about running our race, doing better, being good Christians, being who God's created us to be, it tells us, it gives us the answer right there. How do I do that? How do I run my race well? By focusing my eyes on Christ, the founder and perfecter of our faith. How do we produce much fruit? By abiding in Christ, by focusing on Jesus. And so I call it the beautiful simplicity of abiding because there's this thing that happens. When I decide that I want to be a better father or a better husband or a better pastor or a better human, there's a lot of growth that needs to happen in all of those areas, except for husband. I'm nailing that one. When I decide I want to be better at those things, I think our tendency is to go, okay, what do I need to do to be a better husband? And we identify things and we run and I'm going to do more of this and less of this. What do I need to do to be a better wife? I'm going to do more of this and less than this. What do I need to do to be a better mom? I'm going to do more of this and less of this. And we try to white knuckle our way to better, right? That's the American way. I want to be better at these things. I'm going to focus on those things. I'm going to come up with a plan, and I'm going to do it. And Christianity says, no, no, don't do that. Don't do that. Just focus on Jesus. Just focus on God. Just focus on abiding in Christ, and I'll take care of the rest of it. So here's how this works practically. I do have a lot of room to grow in being a husband. You know the most effective way for me to be a better husband to Jen? It's to pursue Jesus. It's to wake up tomorrow and say, Jesus, I want to honor you today as I seek to be Jen's husband. How do I honor you in that? How would you have me be a good husband today, Jesus? You want to be a better employee? You want to move up the ranks? You want your career to progress? You can spend a lot of time thinking about the best thing to do and the best person to please and the best way, the best jobs to go for or the best tasks to complete or the right people to make friends with or whatever it is you do to progress in your field. Or you can go to work every day, focus on Christ, and you can say, Jesus, how can I honor you today in my work? How can I honor you today in these meetings? How can I honor you today in these tasks? And then you honor Jesus. And you know what happens? Everything else works out. I was talking in my Bible study group about this idea. Just honor Jesus in what we do. Just pursue Jesus in what we do and let him handle the results. And they said, well, what does that mean practically? I said, for my sermons. My job is to be diligent on Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday so that when I stand before you on Sunday, before God on Sunday, I know I've given my best effort. I've honored God in my preparation. I've honored Jesus in my prayer life as I approached sharing this with you guys. And I know that I've done the best that I could in the week that I was given with the time that I was allotted. And I'm honoring Jesus as I give this to you. If I can say that, what happens as a result of the sermon is completely out of my hands. I have nothing to do with that. I don't worry about that. I worry about where my heart is as I prepare, and I'll be the first to confess. Listen, I say that, and that sounds lovely, like how Nate, he's worked diligently on sermons, and he's prayed through them, and he's ready to present them. Yeah, most of the time, sometimes, y'all, I'm winging it, and I sit down, and the very first, y'all are singing, and y'all think things are good, and I sit down, and I'm like, God, I'm so sorry. I dishonored these people. That wasn't worth showering for. I can't believe that I did that to them. So sometimes I don't do it. But on the weeks that I do, then I preach the sermon, and I wash my hands of it. Now it's between you and the Spirit. And somebody in my Bible study said, well, wouldn't that be a great way to approach life? And I was like, yeah, yeah, it would. We should do that with everything. We should do that with how we lead people, with how we love people, with how we be good parents. It's the beautiful simplicity of abiding in Christ. We focus on him, and then he takes care of everything else. And I think that this is a radical message in a culture that wants to try so hard at everything, that wants to have a to-do list for everything, for all the things in life. I'm going to find a way to tackle it, and I'm going to white-knuckle my way to better. And really, the beautiful simplicity of abiding means that we try hard at pursuing Jesus. That's it. That's where we try hard. Christians, you want to know where to put your efforts? You want to know what you need to wake up thinking about? What you need to be consumed with? How you get better at life? How you do all the things that matter? You want to know how to do that? You want to know where to put your efforts? You want to know what you need to wake up thinking about? What you need to be consumed with? How you get better at life? How you do all the things that matter? You want to know how to do that? You want to know where you should put your effort? Put it in pursuing Jesus. And waking up every day and spending time in God's word and time in God's presence through prayer. Put it into pursuing Christ and everything else will take care of itself. And there's a lot of ways to pursue Jesus, okay? We do it through worship. We do it, I believe, through godly community and spiritual conversations. We have transparency and vulnerability. We ask good questions. We share pieces of ourselves. We pursue Jesus through his service, through doing his work. Jesus says whatever we do unto the least of these, we do unto him. So we pursue Jesus by helping those who can't help themselves. But I think the primary way that we pursue Jesus is through devotions. One of the primary ways we pursue Jesus is by waking up every day and spending time in God's Word and time in prayer. I think it's the fundamental way. I think one of the most frustrating things to me about trying to get in shape and fit into your old mediums. I've got one on underneath this that I have to wear a baggy shirt over it because if I don't, I'll just bring shame on my family. I can't wear this polo in front of other people in public. I used to be able to, there was a time, but when you go to get in shape, you can, you can exercise 30 minutes a day, right? And exercising to me is the easy part. That's, that's, that's the fun thing to do. That's fine. That's good. I can put in a podcast or a book or something like that. That's kind of the easy discipline to gain on. You know what the hard part is? Eating like a rabbit, man. That stinks. Eating salads. That's not fun. I don't like eating right. I just don't. I like eating wrong. Very wrong. But unless you do both, you'll never be in good shape. You won't be in good health. And you can exercise all you want, but until your diet changes, your body really doesn't. And you really don't get that healthy. You can exercise all you want and go to church and do all the things and go to Bible study and have the conversations and serve sometimes and give of yourself and tithe. You can do all the exercise you want, but until your diet changes, your spiritual health won't really either. I believe that our pursuit of Jesus begins here. And that when we do that, when we begin it here, then God handles everything else. This is actually affirmed in the book of Psalms. The very first Psalm, the one that Parker read earlier in the service, blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers, but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. And then look what happens. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. David says, blessed is the man who doesn't waste his time with frivolous things, but his delight is in the law of the Lord. His delight is in God's word. And on that law, he meditates day and night. How can you meditate on it if you don't know it, if you haven't learned it, if you haven't poured yourself into it? He prays over it. He pursues Jesus in it. And because of that, he's like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in season. And all that he does, he prospers. The man that David is describing in Psalm 1 did not set about to prosper. That's not the point. He set about to know Jesus. He set about to know his God, to know his law, to know his word. And the happy side effect of that was that God blesses him along his way. I want to be careful when I say that. God's blessings look different than what you think blessings might be. So I'm not preaching that if we get up every day and read God's word that we're going to have all the things that we want. That's not how that goes. But what I am saying is if we get up every day and we spend time in God's word and time in prayer, then we will become who God wants us to be. That's the blessing. And I believe that becoming the people that God has created us to be is the place of greatest peace and contentment and happiness that we can find in life. If you've ever had a season where you were moving, you were doing exactly what God wanted you to do, you know there's no greater peace or joy than that. I had lunch with somebody this week, catching up with them after a long time, and he shifted careers and got a new job. And I said, how's it going, man? And he said, God has affirmed over and over and over again that I am doing exactly what he would have me do, and I have never been happier. It's remarkable how that works. When we walk the path that God has laid out for us, lo and behold, that's where joy is found. I think Psalm 16 tells us something about there being a fullness of joy in the presence of God. And I feel like that's a joy and a peace worth having. So I would also mention to you that nothing worth having is gained by default. Nothing in this life that we have that we really value is gained by default. If you have a good marriage, like a good one, you worked hard at that, Joker. You didn't just fall into that. Unless you're like, if you've been married for like two years, you're like, my marriage is pretty good. We haven't had to work that hard. Okay, forget you. All right. You don't count. Talk to the rest of us in 10 years, rookies. If you have a good marriage, you worked hard at that. You've intentionally spent time together when the kids made it difficult. You've intentionally chosen each other when life tried to prevent it. You've had hard conversations. You've said hard things. You've heard hard things. But you're stronger for it and you have a good marriage and you worked at it. If you have kids who love you, if you have adult kids who love you and want to spend time with you, you worked hard at that. That was not easy. That did not happen by default. If you have a career that you like, that you're proud of, you worked hard at that. That didn't happen by default. If you have good, rich, deep friendships, you've prioritized and valued them over the years. You've made them important. You didn't just default into those. Why would we think that we would default into a good, healthy, vibrant relationship with Jesus? We have to work at it. We have to make time for it. So do that. Prioritize it. Make it happen. Find a time when you can spend time in God's Word and spend time in prayer. If you don't know what to read, ask somebody. Start in Proverbs. If you don't know the Bible at all and you want to read it and you don't know what to read, start in Proverbs. You don't have to know anything about anything for Proverbs to make sense. Totally out of context, just start reading it. It's great. Read a gospel, read the book of Mark. It goes very fast and it points you with Jesus very well. Or just pick up and read something you've been curious about, but start doing it. Make it a habit. Be consistent in it. Trust me when I say that there's no greater habit that anyone can develop than that, and do it. Whatever you're currently doing first in the morning isn't as good as this. And if what you're doing first in the morning is sleeping an extra 30 minutes, it's definitely not as good as this. Just hit pause on that other stuff and engage with God first and then go about your day. I do it when I get into the office. I get into the office. I tend to be the first one in the office because I'm the hardest worker on staff. And I have a kid that starts school early and I have to drop her off every day. So I get here early. But the office is quiet and that's when I have my time. That's when I'm able to pray and read God's word and get ready to prayerfully approach my day. Pick a time when you can do it too. Make it happen. Prioritize it. Value it. Last week, I said that we needed to abide in Christ and we're going to talk about how to do that. And I said that when you came back this week, I was going to light some of your faces on fire and really convict you. So here's the convicting thing. What I'm about to say, I'm not saying to you if you're new. If this is the first time you've ever heard a sermon that's imploring you to have a devotional life, then I'm not saying this next thing to you. If it's the second time, maybe the first time you weren't paying attention, or I just did a bad job with it, whatever it was, I'm not talking to you either. But if you've heard this sermon before, I've preached it plenty. Maybe not from this angle, maybe not in this way, but I've preached have devotions. I've preached that a bunch. I've joked around. I'm going to do it one day. I'm just going to walk up here on stage and I'm going to go, hey, good morning, Grace. It's good to see everybody. My name's Nate, one of the pastors here. You should read the Bible more. Let's pray. Because that's all you need because you know that I'm right. You know that we need to do this. So if that's you and you still don't have habit, as your pastor, as someone who cares about you, let me just ask you, how many more times will you need this sermon? How many more times? How many more times are you going to sit in this room or a room like this and hear this sermon and go, yeah, Monday, I need to. How many more? Can this one be it? Can this one do it for us? Because there's some people in this room who already do this. They've got a rich, vibrant devotional life, and they've been sitting in here, and they've just been cheering me on. Yes, do it. Please. It's the best. And I want all of you to cheer this sermon on every time you hear it from now on. Next time you hear this sermon, listen, I don't want it to convict you one little bit. I want you to sit in those seats feeling great because you know it's true. And now you're the cheering section because I'm never going to stop preaching this sermon. I'm going to preach it once or twice a year for the rest of my days as long as God gives me a stage to preach on to push people back into God's word and to push people back into prayer. But at Grace, as our partners, when I preach this sermon again, I want you to be the biggest cheerleaders. And I never want it to convict you again. Because I want you to hang in there and develop this habit. And I'll tell you this, okay? Just give you a little pastoral advice. Some of you, gosh, I hope, as a result of this, are going to wake up tomorrow, you're going to read your Bible. And it'll be something that you haven't done in a while. And that's great. You'll set your alarm. You'll make your coffee. You get your vibe all right, exactly where you want to be. This is good. This nice fall weather. This is great. I'm going to have the best quiet time. And you're going to open up your Bible to wherever you've decided to open up your Bible. And maybe, maybe God parts the heavens and the angels sing to you and Shekinah glory shines down directly on your head. Maybe. What's probably going to happen is you're going to get a little something out of it that's encouraging, that speaks to something in your life, or maybe nothing at all. You'll pray. If you're not used to praying, you'll pray for about two and a half minutes. You'll be like, I'm all out. Kind of run out of stuff to pray about. That's okay. And maybe it doesn't feel like the heavens parted and Shekinah glory shone down on your noggin. But I tell you what, if you get up tomorrow and you spend time in God's word and you spend time in prayer, I can promise you this, you'll have a different day than you would have had otherwise. You have a different mindset going into that day than you would have had otherwise. And if you do that several days in a row, I don't know when the heavens are gonna open and words are gonna leap off the page, but I can tell you this, if you do it several days in a row, you're gonna have a different week. And if you can manage by God's goodness and grace to hang in there and string together a couple of weeks like that, three, four weeks, you're going to have a different month. And if you start stringing together months, you're going to have a different life. And that's what we want for you at Grace. That's why we want you to be people of devotion. So let's pray that God gives us the strength of conviction to do that so that we know the only thing we need to try hard at is pursuing Jesus, and he'll take care of the rest. Let's pray. Father, we love you so much. We thank you for your word, for the way that you've chosen to reveal yourself to us. I pray that you would give us a heart for it, that you would give us a passion for it, that we would love your word, that we would love this text. God, make it exciting to us as we dive into it. Let us start to piece things together and understand where people go and where they fit and how you're revealed in your word. Let it excite us about you. God, create in us such a hunger for your word that we wake up looking forward to it. Create in us such a hunger for your presence that we desire to pray every day. May we be refreshed in your presence. May we be refreshed by your word. And God, may we become increasingly people of devotion. In Jesus' name, amen.

And so this week we arrive at the third trait that we feel like we are at Grace. And I realized this morning as I was reviewing and preparing that I didn't put this in your notes anywhere. So I don't know if this is going to be unofficial or something. I hope I haven't done something wrong and now this one doesn't count. But we are people of devotion. That's the third trait of grace. We are people of devotion. And when I say devotion, obviously that can mean multiple things, but it really means what it meant back in 1985. We are people who have devotions. You have heard me say many times, if you've been at grace for any period of time, that the single greatest habit that anyone can develop in their life, a lot of you can finish this sentence, is to get up every day and spend time in God's word and time in prayer. That is the most important thing, the most important habit that any single one of us can develop at any point in our life. And I believe that to be true, and we hit on that to be true, and we remind you of that all the time, because I also try to remind you that I am not enough. You can't come listen to me talk for 30 minutes a week and know the breadth and the depth of the God that's waiting for you in this text. You can't listen to whatever I choose to pick out and talk about just this little tiny snippet within here and somehow hope to understand the whole book. That's just not how that works. So it takes more than 30 minutes a week. It takes more than just one small group a week, which we'd love to say is an hour a week talking about spiritual things, but really it's about 45 minutes a week talking about whatever the heck and then about 15 minutes of good spiritual conversation. If you're in a small group, you know what I'm talking about. So that's not enough. We've got to spend time in God's Word, and we've got to spend time in God's presence through prayer. So when we thought about what are we at Grace, what do we want partners to be at Grace? We want to be people of devotion. We want to be people who develop that habit. And as we think about it this morning, I don't know about you, but I feel that when God is speaking to us, he often speaks in stereo. When someone will ask me, hey, how do I hear God's voice? How do I know what he's saying to me? How do I discern God's will for my life? I often will say, one of the first things I'll tell him is, God speaks, when he speaks to me, he speaks in stereo. He tells me from this source and this source and this source and this source, and it just kind of continues to come up in my life. And one of the themes that has been coming up for me in my life before the summer, but in particular the summer, you guys gave me the great privilege and rest of not having to preach in the month of July to just kind of settle and work on some other things in the church and allow God to refresh me a little bit. And it was wonderful. And one of the things that I brought out of there and that seems to continue to come up in my sermons that I'm preaching like when I preached on the law a couple weeks ago and I've seen it come through in themes these last couple weeks and then really we're hitting on it again in my Tuesday morning men's Bible study. I have a men's Bible study that meets on Tuesday mornings at 6 30. We meet that early to keep out the riffraff. The only thing the only thing prohibiting you from being there is laziness. So come on and join us. We're not any nicer there either. This is as nice as it gets. But I see this theme in my life and I've seen it in what we're learning at Grace and I thought it worth highlighting this morning, which is simply the beautiful simplicity of abiding. We talked about this last week. We're conduits of grace. And we looked at John 15, where Jesus is speaking to the disciples, particularly four and five. And he says, I am the vine, you are the branches. Abide in me and I in you, and you will bear much fruit. And we talked about this idea of all I have to do is stay connected to Christ, and he's going to produce the fruit in my life that I need to produce. I don't have to think about that. I just focus on abiding in Christ. And I think that there is this beautiful simplicity to that. Because we can make Christianity really complicated, can't we? It can be really challenging and difficult. It can be intimidating to look at this Bible, to open it up, to come to service on a Sunday and the pastor says, turn to Malachi. You're like, I've never even heard of that name in my life. I don't know where that is, right? Just to learn just the names of the 66 books, to learn how to find them all, that there's 37 or 39 in the Old Testament, 27 in the New Testament, to learn all, what are all the sins? What are all the things I'm supposed to do? What are all the things I'm not supposed to do? Who are all the people? And how old was Paul? Did he live to be 900? Or is that some other guy? Like it can be a lot. And one of the things that I have a heart for is adults, people who have already gone through life and made a bunch of decisions. And in your 30s, 40s, 50s or later, you decide this is when I want to get serious about my faith and you start trying to learn Bible. And you don't have the background that I've been learning about this since I was old enough to talk. But it can feel like a steep bell curve when you're trying to learn faith and taking it seriously. So I love the beautiful simplicity of really what God asks us to do, which is to simply abide in him. Just simply, you just, just, just focus on Jesus. Just pursue Jesus. Just love others like Jesus loves you. Just do all that. The rest of this stuff, if you focus on abiding in Christ, the rest of this stuff, the rest of Christianity, the rest of life will take care of itself. Just focus on abiding in Christ. And this is, this is an attitude that we see throughout scripture. We're going to look at two other places today where it's pared down and it's made just this simple. One of my favorite pictures of this in the Bible is in the book of Hebrews. In the book of Hebrews, there's Hebrews chapter 12, verse 1, obviously follows. I don't know if you know this. You have to go to seminary to know this, but chapter 12 of Hebrews follows chapter 11 of Hebrews. And in chapter 11 of Hebrews, we have this really famous passage that's called the Hall of Faith, where the author of Hebrews lists out all of these heroes of the faith and the acts that they performed by faith. And then when we get into 12, and I'll read it in just a minute, but when we get into 12, we see it begin, So it's this idea that we're on the playing field of earth as those in heaven who have come before us are now watching us in real time, which I think is a really cool thought. And here's what the author of Hebrews says. He says, Because we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us throw off the sin and the weight that so easily entangles and run the race that is set before us. And it's language, I think, that we can identify with. It's language that inspires. We're kind of like, okay, I'm on the playing field. I'm supposed to run this race. I'm supposed to live my life. I'm supposed to do the things that God wants me to do. How do I do that? Well, I throw off the sin and the weight that so easily entangles. I need to run in such a way that I can do what God wants me to do, that I can be who God wants me to be, and I need to get rid of all the things that don't help me run my race. And this, again, is an idea that is replete throughout Scripture. It shows up again and again and again. Paul tells us that we are to fight the good fight. He says that he fights the good fight. He tells us that in this race, we are to run as the one who's trying to get the prize, that we are supposed to cling to our faith. We are told to live a life worthy of the calling that we have received. Jesus tells us that other people should see our good works and so glorify our Father who is in heaven. So all throughout Scripture is this simple admonition that we need to live a life worthy of the calling that we've received. We need to run the race. We need to be who God created us to be. We need to determine what are our good works and how do we walk in them. And you can rephrase all of that and we say we need to be good Christians. We need to grow in our faith. We need to move towards Jesus. And we can identify with this. This is, to me, inspiring. It's easy to understand. Yep, I'm running a race and I do that by throwing off the sin and the weight that's so easily entangled. So I got to stop doing those things so I can do the things that God wants me to do. And sometimes, I think more often than not, that's where we stop. I'm going to try really hard at running this race. I'm going to try really hard to be a good Christian. I'm going to try really hard to be a good dad and a good husband and a good friend, a good employee or employer. I'm going to try really hard to be a good citizen. And I'm going to do that by throwing off the sin and the weight that so easily entangles. And we act like the next verse doesn't exist. How are we supposed to do that? By looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith. Even in Hebrews, where it uses this language about running our race, doing better, being good Christians, being who God's created us to be, it tells us, it gives us the answer right there. How do I do that? How do I run my race well? By focusing my eyes on Christ, the founder and perfecter of our faith. How do we produce much fruit? By abiding in Christ, by focusing on Jesus. And so I call it the beautiful simplicity of abiding because there's this thing that happens. When I decide that I want to be a better father or a better husband or a better pastor or a better human, there's a lot of growth that needs to happen in all of those areas, except for husband. I'm nailing that one. When I decide I want to be better at those things, I think our tendency is to go, okay, what do I need to do to be a better husband? And we identify things and we run and I'm going to do more of this and less of this. What do I need to do to be a better wife? I'm going to do more of this and less than this. What do I need to do to be a better mom? I'm going to do more of this and less of this. And we try to white knuckle our way to better, right? That's the American way. I want to be better at these things. I'm going to focus on those things. I'm going to come up with a plan, and I'm going to do it. And Christianity says, no, no, don't do that. Don't do that. Just focus on Jesus. Just focus on God. Just focus on abiding in Christ, and I'll take care of the rest of it. So here's how this works practically. I do have a lot of room to grow in being a husband. You know the most effective way for me to be a better husband to Jen? It's to pursue Jesus. It's to wake up tomorrow and say, Jesus, I want to honor you today as I seek to be Jen's husband. How do I honor you in that? How would you have me be a good husband today, Jesus? You want to be a better employee? You want to move up the ranks? You want your career to progress? You can spend a lot of time thinking about the best thing to do and the best person to please and the best way, the best jobs to go for or the best tasks to complete or the right people to make friends with or whatever it is you do to progress in your field. Or you can go to work every day, focus on Christ, and you can say, Jesus, how can I honor you today in my work? How can I honor you today in these meetings? How can I honor you today in these tasks? And then you honor Jesus. And you know what happens? Everything else works out. I was talking in my Bible study group about this idea. Just honor Jesus in what we do. Just pursue Jesus in what we do and let him handle the results. And they said, well, what does that mean practically? I said, for my sermons. My job is to be diligent on Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday so that when I stand before you on Sunday, before God on Sunday, I know I've given my best effort. I've honored God in my preparation. I've honored Jesus in my prayer life as I approached sharing this with you guys. And I know that I've done the best that I could in the week that I was given with the time that I was allotted. And I'm honoring Jesus as I give this to you. If I can say that, what happens as a result of the sermon is completely out of my hands. I have nothing to do with that. I don't worry about that. I worry about where my heart is as I prepare, and I'll be the first to confess. Listen, I say that, and that sounds lovely, like how Nate, he's worked diligently on sermons, and he's prayed through them, and he's ready to present them. Yeah, most of the time, sometimes, y'all, I'm winging it, and I sit down, and the very first, y'all are singing, and y'all think things are good, and I sit down, and I'm like, God, I'm so sorry. I dishonored these people. That wasn't worth showering for. I can't believe that I did that to them. So sometimes I don't do it. But on the weeks that I do, then I preach the sermon, and I wash my hands of it. Now it's between you and the Spirit. And somebody in my Bible study said, well, wouldn't that be a great way to approach life? And I was like, yeah, yeah, it would. We should do that with everything. We should do that with how we lead people, with how we love people, with how we be good parents. It's the beautiful simplicity of abiding in Christ. We focus on him, and then he takes care of everything else. And I think that this is a radical message in a culture that wants to try so hard at everything, that wants to have a to-do list for everything, for all the things in life. I'm going to find a way to tackle it, and I'm going to white-knuckle my way to better. And really, the beautiful simplicity of abiding means that we try hard at pursuing Jesus. That's it. That's where we try hard. Christians, you want to know where to put your efforts? You want to know what you need to wake up thinking about? What you need to be consumed with? How you get better at life? How you do all the things that matter? You want to know how to do that? You want to know where to put your efforts? You want to know what you need to wake up thinking about? What you need to be consumed with? How you get better at life? How you do all the things that matter? You want to know how to do that? You want to know where you should put your effort? Put it in pursuing Jesus. And waking up every day and spending time in God's word and time in God's presence through prayer. Put it into pursuing Christ and everything else will take care of itself. And there's a lot of ways to pursue Jesus, okay? We do it through worship. We do it, I believe, through godly community and spiritual conversations. We have transparency and vulnerability. We ask good questions. We share pieces of ourselves. We pursue Jesus through his service, through doing his work. Jesus says whatever we do unto the least of these, we do unto him. So we pursue Jesus by helping those who can't help themselves. But I think the primary way that we pursue Jesus is through devotions. One of the primary ways we pursue Jesus is by waking up every day and spending time in God's Word and time in prayer. I think it's the fundamental way. I think one of the most frustrating things to me about trying to get in shape and fit into your old mediums. I've got one on underneath this that I have to wear a baggy shirt over it because if I don't, I'll just bring shame on my family. I can't wear this polo in front of other people in public. I used to be able to, there was a time, but when you go to get in shape, you can, you can exercise 30 minutes a day, right? And exercising to me is the easy part. That's, that's, that's the fun thing to do. That's fine. That's good. I can put in a podcast or a book or something like that. That's kind of the easy discipline to gain on. You know what the hard part is? Eating like a rabbit, man. That stinks. Eating salads. That's not fun. I don't like eating right. I just don't. I like eating wrong. Very wrong. But unless you do both, you'll never be in good shape. You won't be in good health. And you can exercise all you want, but until your diet changes, your body really doesn't. And you really don't get that healthy. You can exercise all you want and go to church and do all the things and go to Bible study and have the conversations and serve sometimes and give of yourself and tithe. You can do all the exercise you want, but until your diet changes, your spiritual health won't really either. I believe that our pursuit of Jesus begins here. And that when we do that, when we begin it here, then God handles everything else. This is actually affirmed in the book of Psalms. The very first Psalm, the one that Parker read earlier in the service, blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers, but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. And then look what happens. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. David says, blessed is the man who doesn't waste his time with frivolous things, but his delight is in the law of the Lord. His delight is in God's word. And on that law, he meditates day and night. How can you meditate on it if you don't know it, if you haven't learned it, if you haven't poured yourself into it? He prays over it. He pursues Jesus in it. And because of that, he's like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in season. And all that he does, he prospers. The man that David is describing in Psalm 1 did not set about to prosper. That's not the point. He set about to know Jesus. He set about to know his God, to know his law, to know his word. And the happy side effect of that was that God blesses him along his way. I want to be careful when I say that. God's blessings look different than what you think blessings might be. So I'm not preaching that if we get up every day and read God's word that we're going to have all the things that we want. That's not how that goes. But what I am saying is if we get up every day and we spend time in God's word and time in prayer, then we will become who God wants us to be. That's the blessing. And I believe that becoming the people that God has created us to be is the place of greatest peace and contentment and happiness that we can find in life. If you've ever had a season where you were moving, you were doing exactly what God wanted you to do, you know there's no greater peace or joy than that. I had lunch with somebody this week, catching up with them after a long time, and he shifted careers and got a new job. And I said, how's it going, man? And he said, God has affirmed over and over and over again that I am doing exactly what he would have me do, and I have never been happier. It's remarkable how that works. When we walk the path that God has laid out for us, lo and behold, that's where joy is found. I think Psalm 16 tells us something about there being a fullness of joy in the presence of God. And I feel like that's a joy and a peace worth having. So I would also mention to you that nothing worth having is gained by default. Nothing in this life that we have that we really value is gained by default. If you have a good marriage, like a good one, you worked hard at that, Joker. You didn't just fall into that. Unless you're like, if you've been married for like two years, you're like, my marriage is pretty good. We haven't had to work that hard. Okay, forget you. All right. You don't count. Talk to the rest of us in 10 years, rookies. If you have a good marriage, you worked hard at that. You've intentionally spent time together when the kids made it difficult. You've intentionally chosen each other when life tried to prevent it. You've had hard conversations. You've said hard things. You've heard hard things. But you're stronger for it and you have a good marriage and you worked at it. If you have kids who love you, if you have adult kids who love you and want to spend time with you, you worked hard at that. That was not easy. That did not happen by default. If you have a career that you like, that you're proud of, you worked hard at that. That didn't happen by default. If you have good, rich, deep friendships, you've prioritized and valued them over the years. You've made them important. You didn't just default into those. Why would we think that we would default into a good, healthy, vibrant relationship with Jesus? We have to work at it. We have to make time for it. So do that. Prioritize it. Make it happen. Find a time when you can spend time in God's Word and spend time in prayer. If you don't know what to read, ask somebody. Start in Proverbs. If you don't know the Bible at all and you want to read it and you don't know what to read, start in Proverbs. You don't have to know anything about anything for Proverbs to make sense. Totally out of context, just start reading it. It's great. Read a gospel, read the book of Mark. It goes very fast and it points you with Jesus very well. Or just pick up and read something you've been curious about, but start doing it. Make it a habit. Be consistent in it. Trust me when I say that there's no greater habit that anyone can develop than that, and do it. Whatever you're currently doing first in the morning isn't as good as this. And if what you're doing first in the morning is sleeping an extra 30 minutes, it's definitely not as good as this. Just hit pause on that other stuff and engage with God first and then go about your day. I do it when I get into the office. I get into the office. I tend to be the first one in the office because I'm the hardest worker on staff. And I have a kid that starts school early and I have to drop her off every day. So I get here early. But the office is quiet and that's when I have my time. That's when I'm able to pray and read God's word and get ready to prayerfully approach my day. Pick a time when you can do it too. Make it happen. Prioritize it. Value it. Last week, I said that we needed to abide in Christ and we're going to talk about how to do that. And I said that when you came back this week, I was going to light some of your faces on fire and really convict you. So here's the convicting thing. What I'm about to say, I'm not saying to you if you're new. If this is the first time you've ever heard a sermon that's imploring you to have a devotional life, then I'm not saying this next thing to you. If it's the second time, maybe the first time you weren't paying attention, or I just did a bad job with it, whatever it was, I'm not talking to you either. But if you've heard this sermon before, I've preached it plenty. Maybe not from this angle, maybe not in this way, but I've preached have devotions. I've preached that a bunch. I've joked around. I'm going to do it one day. I'm just going to walk up here on stage and I'm going to go, hey, good morning, Grace. It's good to see everybody. My name's Nate, one of the pastors here. You should read the Bible more. Let's pray. Because that's all you need because you know that I'm right. You know that we need to do this. So if that's you and you still don't have habit, as your pastor, as someone who cares about you, let me just ask you, how many more times will you need this sermon? How many more times? How many more times are you going to sit in this room or a room like this and hear this sermon and go, yeah, Monday, I need to. How many more? Can this one be it? Can this one do it for us? Because there's some people in this room who already do this. They've got a rich, vibrant devotional life, and they've been sitting in here, and they've just been cheering me on. Yes, do it. Please. It's the best. And I want all of you to cheer this sermon on every time you hear it from now on. Next time you hear this sermon, listen, I don't want it to convict you one little bit. I want you to sit in those seats feeling great because you know it's true. And now you're the cheering section because I'm never going to stop preaching this sermon. I'm going to preach it once or twice a year for the rest of my days as long as God gives me a stage to preach on to push people back into God's word and to push people back into prayer. But at Grace, as our partners, when I preach this sermon again, I want you to be the biggest cheerleaders. And I never want it to convict you again. Because I want you to hang in there and develop this habit. And I'll tell you this, okay? Just give you a little pastoral advice. Some of you, gosh, I hope, as a result of this, are going to wake up tomorrow, you're going to read your Bible. And it'll be something that you haven't done in a while. And that's great. You'll set your alarm. You'll make your coffee. You get your vibe all right, exactly where you want to be. This is good. This nice fall weather. This is great. I'm going to have the best quiet time. And you're going to open up your Bible to wherever you've decided to open up your Bible. And maybe, maybe God parts the heavens and the angels sing to you and Shekinah glory shines down directly on your head. Maybe. What's probably going to happen is you're going to get a little something out of it that's encouraging, that speaks to something in your life, or maybe nothing at all. You'll pray. If you're not used to praying, you'll pray for about two and a half minutes. You'll be like, I'm all out. Kind of run out of stuff to pray about. That's okay. And maybe it doesn't feel like the heavens parted and Shekinah glory shone down on your noggin. But I tell you what, if you get up tomorrow and you spend time in God's word and you spend time in prayer, I can promise you this, you'll have a different day than you would have had otherwise. You have a different mindset going into that day than you would have had otherwise. And if you do that several days in a row, I don't know when the heavens are gonna open and words are gonna leap off the page, but I can tell you this, if you do it several days in a row, you're gonna have a different week. And if you can manage by God's goodness and grace to hang in there and string together a couple of weeks like that, three, four weeks, you're going to have a different month. And if you start stringing together months, you're going to have a different life. And that's what we want for you at Grace. That's why we want you to be people of devotion. So let's pray that God gives us the strength of conviction to do that so that we know the only thing we need to try hard at is pursuing Jesus, and he'll take care of the rest. Let's pray. Father, we love you so much. We thank you for your word, for the way that you've chosen to reveal yourself to us. I pray that you would give us a heart for it, that you would give us a passion for it, that we would love your word, that we would love this text. God, make it exciting to us as we dive into it. Let us start to piece things together and understand where people go and where they fit and how you're revealed in your word. Let it excite us about you. God, create in us such a hunger for your word that we wake up looking forward to it. Create in us such a hunger for your presence that we desire to pray every day. May we be refreshed in your presence. May we be refreshed by your word. And God, may we become increasingly people of devotion. In Jesus' name, amen.

Well, good morning. My name is Nate. I get to be the pastor here. It's good to see you. Thanks for being a part of the Mother's Day service. To the moms, happy Mother's Day. We hope that it is all that you dreamed. I had one mom come up before the service and say, not that you asked for my opinion. She's a dear friend. I said, not that you, she said, not that you asked for my opinion, but just so you know, baby dedication on Mother's Day is not a gift to mothers. We empathize with you, mysterious friend, and I'm sorry, but everybody else really liked it. I don't know what to tell you. And to those for whom Mother's Day is difficult, Jen and I walked through difficult Mother's Days. For those to whom Mother's Day is kind of just a reminder of maybe something that you don't have or that you've lost or that you've hoped for, and that is unrequited. Our hearts are with you, and our prayers are with you. And I always say that in Mother's Day services, and as I look out now, I get to see some babies that I prayed for, that belonged to some mamas that I hurt for, and that's a real blessing. We're taking a break from our series in the letters of Peter this morning for really, I guess it feels silly to say it since I'm the one doing it, but a special Mother's Day message. But this is something that I will confess to you. I'm really excited to share. I feel really strongly and deeply about what I'm going to share with you this morning. And what I'm going to share with you is actually one of my primary motivators in ministry. It is one of my primary motivators to hang in there in ministry. It's one of the things I care most deeply about. And I will warn you, I've come prepared. I've been on the razor's edge of emotion this morning. I was supposed to pray at the end of the service. There's no way that's going to happen. You'll see why. But I bailed out of that before the service started. Because I'm going to sit there next to Jen and feel the freedom to be a mess if I want to be. But I'm going to do something that I don't normally do this morning and just talk to parents. Those of you who dedicated your babies. This is for you. And those of you who are family members, this is for you. And then parents in the room, this is for you. And I don't normally do this because I don't want to exclude any portion of the audience, but I'm going to take the license and the liberty here on Mother's Day to just talk to the parents in the room. And as I do that, I wanted to begin by asking you this question and get you thinking about this along with me. What sort of legacy are you leaving for your children? One day when you're gone and your children, Lord willing, have their own families and their own people in their life who love them, what will your legacy be to them? Because we're all leaving one. Make no mistake about that. We are all of us legacy builders. We all leave behind something. And there are myriad legacies to leave. We could leave an affinity for a sports team. We could leave a legacy of being a Red Sox fan or an unfortunate Panthers fan, whatever your legacy might be. We can leave behind fandom if we like. I'm going to continue to pray for your children, Shane, as you bestow that legacy on them. It's unfortunate. We can leave behind a legacy of generosity, of kindness, of hospitality, of grace. And then we all know, and I think our greatest fear as parents is to leave behind legacies that our children do not want to emulate. To leave behind legacies that wound those who have been entrusted to us. Of sin and struggle and failure. And make no mistake, we will all leave some of those too. But God in his goodness can clean up that mess for us. But we all leave legacies. We are all building them. And I think it's good to remind us of that because it's a sobering thought. It's an arresting thought. And if we just go throughout our days, I don't think that we pay attention to that. I don't think that we are reminded of that. I don't think that we are aware of that. We can be so hurried and harried that we're just trying to get people to the next thing. All kidding aside, getting kids up and getting them bathed and getting them ready to be seen by the whole church and then having the whole church laugh at your child. That was nice. And Jen had to do it by herself. That's stressful. You're not thinking about legacy when you're trying to dry a kid's hair and just get them in the dang car. Can you just sit down? We've been doing this for six years, all right? You know the drill. Get in the car. You're not thinking about legacy. You're not thinking about legacy when you're driving them to soccer practice and when you're picking them up and when they're out of town and when you're just going throughout the day and trying to decide another day what in the world dinner is going to be today. You're not thinking about legacy. But whether we like it or not, realize it or not, we are every day building a legacy for our children to follow and to walk in. And so more pointedly, what sort of spiritual legacy are you leaving behind? What will they learn about God from you? How will they see his love in you? Mamas, how will they watch you love their daddy in such a way that compels them to either find someone like you or be more like you when they grow up? Dads, how will your children see you love their mom? Will it be in such a way that compels them to love just like you did or to demand that someone loves them like you? What sort of legacy of marriage and family will we leave for our children? What sort of legacy of godliness will we leave for them? Will they see you open your word daily? Will they hear you teach them the principles of God as is dictated to us in Psalm 78 and in Deuteronomy and in Numbers? Will they not only hear you teach those things, but watch you walk them out and believe in and trust in your integrity? Will they know in their hearts that who you are on Sunday is every bit who you are on Wednesday night too? And is every bit who you are as you go into and out of your workplace? What sort of spiritual legacy will you leave? Because I am convinced, having watched children grow up in the church for 40 years, Having experienced adulthood myself, having watched my friends and my peers enter into adulthood and into parenthood and go through life, I am convinced that this is true, that you cannot overstate the value for an individual of growing up in a home where that child knows, my God loves me and my parents love me and they believe in me. You cannot overstate the value of that truth in the life of an adult. God, my creator, loves me. My mom and my dad, they love me. And God and my parents, they believe in me. And I want desperately for this church to produce children who know those things are true. I pray most ardently for the families in this church who are raising kids that those kids will grow up and they will know my God loves me, my parents love me, and they believe in me. You cannot overstate the value of those truths and the impact they have on our lives as adults. And to that end, some of us in the room, as we all acknowledge that we build legacies, some of us are legacy carriers. Some of us inherited a rich and deep faith from our parents, and it is our job to pick up that banner and to carry it forward with faith and with consistency and with passion. And we stand on shoulders of people who have come before us, who have chosen to prize Jesus in their life and have bestowed that richness of faith upon us. And our job as the carriers is to pick up the banner and go with it. And if you are a carrier of a legacy, you know the blessing that that is. You know the advantage that gives you. If you lived any life as an adult, you know the wealth that that has to grow up knowing, man, my God loves me and my parents love me and they believe in me. And to enter into adulthood being certain of those things and to have your own children and not have to worry and not have to be confused. What does godly parenthood look like? Because your parents faithfully modeled that for you. So all you do is you take the baton and you run with it. So some of us are legacy carriers. And you know the blessing of what that is. Others of us are tasked with being legacy starters. Others of us have parents, grew up in homes that may have been wonderful, may have been full of love, and maybe your parents bestowed upon you some wonderful traits of kindness and graciousness and generosity, but you did not learn from your parents what it was to love Jesus. You did not see godliness and devotion to Christ modeled in your home on a day-to-day basis. And so you don't know what that looks like as an adult. You're a legacy starter. You're a legacy beginner. You are tasked with making the decision to say, the generations that came before me, they didn't value godliness. They didn't teach the love of Christ in their home. They just were clouded and they didn't see it and they didn't have it. And I've entered into adulthood and I'm gonna draw a line in the sand that from now on, the generations that come in my family that have my last name will know that Jesus loves them. And you make a choice that moving forward, the name that you're giving to your kids is going to mean something different than the name that you got when you were a kid. You're a legacy starter. And for you, I pray the hardest. I don't know if it's fair. I don't mean to neglect anyone else, but you're the ones I love the most. You are the ones for whom I carry the most hope because I know it's hard to start a legacy. I've seen the wounds that you enter into life with. I've seen how hard it is to choose faith when you don't know the way. And I, with you, hope that your kids don't have to figure that out. I hope that they don't have to learn the lessons that you're learning. I hope that they don't have to walk the path that you've walked. I hope that you can walk it for them so that they might be legacy carriers, so that they might carry the baton on from you. And I pray hardest for you because I do think that your path is more difficult and because that's who my parents were. I won't get into the details because it's probably not appropriate here, but for different reasons, each of my parents had to draw a line in the sand and say, our name is going to mean something different when we give it to our children. And it did. And they've said it. And I get the blessing of being a carrier. I get the blessing of standing on shoulders and I've watched them struggle and I've watched them try and I've watched them prize Jesus in our home. And for those of you who are legacy starters, I want you to grow old and look at your children and see the struggles but know that it was worth it. And if you play your cards right, one day, one of your children could be the pastor of a tiny church straddling an aquarium store. And church, as we seek to surround these families. As we seek to surround these families. And at the beginning of the service, we stood, all of us. We are part of building that legacy too. In our small groups and in the ebbs and flows of life. As passions might wane, as other things in life might seek to interfere with the goals of the families and the parents. It's our job as a church to step in, to rally around, to protect, to pray for, to support, to challenge, to convict, to hope, and to see these families through as we all leave legacies. Grandparents, you're leaving one too. Your children will remember how you loved on and cared for their children. It's great if you're the fun one. Be the godly one. Be the praying one. Be the supportive one. Be the one that fights for their marriages. Be the one that loves your children well. And your children will inherit that legacy too. And let us remember remember as we seek to build these legacies, as we surround the parents who seek to leave a wake of godliness behind them, that our goal is not to raise well-behaved 10-year-olds. Big deal. Our goal is to release grown adults into the world who know that God loves them, that you love them, and that God believes in them, and that Christ died for them. Our goal is to raise grown adults who know that God loves them and he cherishes them. When I pray for my children, I pray that they would know God better than I do. I pray that they would love Jesus more than I do. And I pray that I would see things in their walks and in their journeys that inspire and convict me. I pray that they will go further than I do. And to put a fine point on it, what we are praying for is Ephesians 2.10. Ephesians 2.10 says that we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works that we might walk in them. And I love that verse because it tells us that God created us intentionally, on purpose, so that one day we might walk in the good works that he has laid out for us, that he has designed us for, that he has gifted us for, that he has turned us towards in our various bents. But as I think about it this morning, it occurs to me that that is the job of the parent, is to know and acknowledge that your children are God's workmanship. And they were created in Christ Jesus for good works that God has purposed them for before the beginning of time that they might walk in them. So as a parent, your role is to raise children who have ears to hear and eyes to see the good works that God has created them to walk in and then have the courage and the faith and the love and the passion and the freedom to walk in those good works. That's what we pray for. That's what we hope for. That we will release out of grace for generation after generation legacy carriers, not starters. That we will release generation after generation at Grace kids into the world who know that they are God's workmanship and they are seeking out the good works that they might walk in that God intentioned and purposed them for. That is our hope and our prayer for the families of Grace. And that is the challenge to the parents of Grace. And in light of that challenge, as we wrap up the service today, I'm going to invite the band up to sing a prayer over us. It's a song called The Blessing. And it's pulled straight from Scripture. It's pulled straight from Scripture most pointedly. You'll hear these words that are written in Numbers chapter six. The author writes this, the Lord spoke to Moses, tell Aaron and his sons, this is how you are to bless the Israelites. You should say to them, may the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord look with favor on you and give you peace. This song is an amalgamation of a passage in Deuteronomy that tells us to teach the word to our children, to put it on our walls, to repeat it to them in our coming and in our going. It's an amalgamation of this passage in Numbers and even the passage that we read from Psalms, a generation after generation, that if we can establish a legacy, then generation after generation can take that baton and run with it. And so this song is a prayer. And I'm going to invite you to just sit and let it be sung over you, parents. And in the song, there's this word, amen. And in the case of this song, it means I agree, I affirm that, yes, Lord. We hope that it is all that you dreamed. I had one mom come up before the service and say, not that you asked for my opinion. She's a dear friend. I said, not that you, she said, not that you asked for my opinion, but just so you know, baby dedication on Mother's Day is not a gift to mothers. We empathize with you, mysterious friend, and I'm sorry, but everybody else really liked it. I don't know what to tell you. And to those for whom Mother's Day is difficult, Jen and I walked through difficult Mother's Days. For those to whom Mother's Day is kind of just a reminder of maybe something that you don't have or that you've lost or that you've hoped for, and that is unrequited. Our hearts are with you, and our prayers are with you. And I always say that in Mother's Day services, and as I look out now, I get to see some babies that I prayed for, that belonged to some mamas that I hurt for, and that's a real blessing. We're taking a break from our series in the letters of Peter this morning for really, I guess it feels silly to say it since I'm the one doing it, but a special Mother's Day message. But this is something that I will confess to you. I'm really excited to share. I feel really strongly and deeply about what I'm going to share with you this morning. And what I'm going to share with you is actually one of my primary motivators in ministry. It is one of my primary motivators to hang in there in ministry. It's one of the things I care most deeply about. And I will warn you, I've come prepared. I've been on the razor's edge of emotion this morning. I was supposed to pray at the end of the service. There's no way that's going to happen. You'll see why. But I bailed out of that before the service started. Because I'm going to sit there next to Jen and feel the freedom to be a mess if I want to be. But I'm going to do something that I don't normally do this morning and just talk to parents. Those of you who dedicated your babies. This is for you. And those of you who are family members, this is for you. And then parents in the room, this is for you. And I don't normally do this because I don't want to exclude any portion of the audience, but I'm going to take the license and the liberty here on Mother's Day to just talk to the parents in the room. And as I do that, I wanted to begin by asking you this question and get you thinking about this along with me. What sort of legacy are you leaving for your children? One day when you're gone and your children, Lord willing, have their own families and their own people in their life who love them, what will your legacy be to them? Because we're all leaving one. Make no mistake about that. We are all of us legacy builders. We all leave behind something. And there are myriad legacies to leave. We could leave an affinity for a sports team. We could leave a legacy of being a Red Sox fan or an unfortunate Panthers fan, whatever your legacy might be. We can leave behind fandom if we like. I'm going to continue to pray for your children, Shane, as you bestow that legacy on them. It's unfortunate. We can leave behind a legacy of generosity, of kindness, of hospitality, of grace. And then we all know, and I think our greatest fear as parents is to leave behind legacies that our children do not want to emulate. To leave behind legacies that wound those who have been entrusted to us. Of sin and struggle and failure. And make no mistake, we will all leave some of those too. But God in his goodness can clean up that mess for us. But we all leave legacies. We are all building them. And I think it's good to remind us of that because it's a sobering thought. It's an arresting thought. And if we just go throughout our days, I don't think that we pay attention to that. I don't think that we are reminded of that. I don't think that we are aware of that. We can be so hurried and harried that we're just trying to get people to the next thing. All kidding aside, getting kids up and getting them bathed and getting them ready to be seen by the whole church and then having the whole church laugh at your child. That was nice. And Jen had to do it by herself. That's stressful. You're not thinking about legacy when you're trying to dry a kid's hair and just get them in the dang car. Can you just sit down? We've been doing this for six years, all right? You know the drill. Get in the car. You're not thinking about legacy. You're not thinking about legacy when you're driving them to soccer practice and when you're picking them up and when they're out of town and when you're just going throughout the day and trying to decide another day what in the world dinner is going to be today. You're not thinking about legacy. But whether we like it or not, realize it or not, we are every day building a legacy for our children to follow and to walk in. And so more pointedly, what sort of spiritual legacy are you leaving behind? What will they learn about God from you? How will they see his love in you? Mamas, how will they watch you love their daddy in such a way that compels them to either find someone like you or be more like you when they grow up? You did not see godliness and devotion to Christ modeled in your home on a day-to-day basis. And so you don't know what that looks like as an adult. You're a legacy starter. You're a legacy beginner. You are tasked with making the decision to say, the generations that came before me, they didn't value godliness. They didn't teach the love of Christ in their home. They just were clouded and they didn't see it and they didn't have it. And I've entered into adulthood and I'm gonna draw a line in the sand that from now on, the generations that come in my family that have my last name will know that Jesus loves them. And you make a choice that moving forward, the name that you're giving to your kids is going to mean something different than the name that you got when you were a kid. You're a legacy starter. And for you, I pray the hardest. I don't know if it's fair. I don't mean to neglect anyone else, but you're the ones I love the most. You are the ones for whom I carry the most hope because I know it's hard to start a legacy. I've seen the wounds that you enter into life with. I've seen how hard it is to choose faith when you don't know the way. And I, with you, hope that your kids don't have to figure that out. I hope that they don't have to learn the lessons that you're learning. I hope that they don't have to walk the path that you've walked. I hope that you can walk it for them so that they might be legacy carriers, so that they might carry the baton on from you. And I pray hardest for you because I do think that your path is more difficult and because that's who my parents were. I won't get into the details because it's probably not appropriate here, but for different reasons, each of my parents had to draw a line in the sand and say, our name is going to mean something different when we give it to our children. And it did. And they've said it. And I get the blessing of being a carrier. I get the blessing of standing on shoulders and I've watched them struggle and I've watched them try and I've watched them prize Jesus in our home. And for those of you who are legacy starters, I want you to grow old and look at your children and see the struggles but know that it was worth it. And if you play your cards right, one day, one of your children could be the pastor of a tiny church straddling an aquarium store. And church, as we seek to surround these families. As we seek to surround these families. And at the beginning of the service, we stood, all of us. We are part of building that legacy too. In our small groups and in the ebbs and flows of life. As passions might wane, as other things in life might seek to interfere with the goals of the families and the parents. It's our job as a church to step in, to rally around, to protect, to pray for, to support, to challenge, to convict, to hope, and to see these families through as we all leave legacies. Grandparents, you're leaving one too. Your children will remember how you loved on and cared for their children. It's great if you're the fun one. Be the godly one. Be the praying one. Be the supportive one. Be the one that fights for their marriages. Be the one that loves your children well. And your children will inherit that legacy too. And let us remember remember as we seek to build these legacies, as we surround the parents who seek to leave a wake of godliness behind them, that our goal is not to raise well-behaved 10-year-olds. Big deal. Our goal is to release grown adults into the world who know that God loves them, that you love them, and that God believes in them, and that Christ died for them. Our goal is to raise grown adults who know that God loves them and he cherishes them. When I pray for my children, I pray that they would know God better than I do. I pray that they would love Jesus more than I do. And I pray that I would see things in their walks and in their journeys that inspire and convict me. I pray that they will go further than I do. And to put a fine point on it, what we are praying for is Ephesians 2.10. Ephesians 2.10 says that we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works that we might walk in them. And I love that verse because it tells us that God created us intentionally, on purpose, so that one day we might walk in the good works that he has laid out for us, that he has designed us for, that he has gifted us for, that he has turned us towards in our various bents. But as I think about it this morning, it occurs to me that that is the job of the parent, is to know and acknowledge that your children are God's workmanship. And they were created in Christ Jesus for good works that God has purposed them for before the beginning of time that they might walk in them. So as a parent, your role is to raise children who have ears to hear and eyes to see the good works that God has created them to walk in and then have the courage and the faith and the love and the passion and the freedom to walk in those good works. That's what we pray for. That's what we hope for. That we will release out of grace for generation after generation legacy carriers, not starters. That we will release generation after generation at Grace kids into the world who know that they are God's workmanship and they are seeking out the good works that they might walk in that God intentioned and purposed them for. That is our hope and our prayer for the families of Grace. And that is the challenge to the parents of Grace. And in light of that challenge, as we wrap up the service today, I'm going to invite the band up to sing a prayer over us. It's a song called The Blessing. And it's pulled straight from Scripture. It's pulled straight from Scripture most pointedly. You'll hear these words that are written in Numbers chapter six. The author writes this, the Lord spoke to Moses, tell Aaron and his sons, this is how you are to bless the Israelites. You should say to them, may the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord look with favor on you and give you peace. This song is an amalgamation of a passage in Deuteronomy that tells us to teach the word to our children, to put it on our walls, to repeat it to them in our coming and in our going. It's an amalgamation of this passage in Numbers and even the passage that we read from Psalms, a generation after generation, that if we can establish a legacy, then generation after generation can take that baton and run with it. And so this song is a prayer. And I'm going to invite you to just sit and let it be sung over you, parents. And in the song, there's this word, amen. And in the case of this song, it means I agree, I affirm that, yes, Lord. So in light of our role as parents, in light of our responsibility to leave behind a legacy worth following, I hope that you'll receive this song as a prayer over you before we go back out into our weeks.

Well, good morning, everyone. My name is Nate. I get to be one of the pastors here. It's so good to see everybody. I've got a lot of people sitting in seats that they don't normally go in. I don't know what you're doing over there, Zach, DJ, Laura, what in the world? I'm totally distracted. And just, I need to give you a peek behind the scenes before I just dive into the sermon like there's nothing happening in my life. I know I'm jovial now. This is serious. Yesterday, my sister-in-law, Jen's sister, Lauren, was in a really bad car accident and has just a lot of broken bones and is currently in surgery. The doctors say that she will recover and walk again, which is just a wild sentence to hear about your sister-in-law on a normal Saturday. So Jen was doing something yesterday afternoon, got home, grabbed Lily, and fired down to Athens, Georgia. So she's down there. So I've got John. Normally on a Sunday morning, I get up at 5, I shower, I come into the office, I'm locked in at 545, I run through the sermon, and I just kind of steep it and I try not to let anything distract me and I just focus on that. And then at about 930, I come over here and I glad hand you guys and pretend like I'm not trying to think about my sermon. But I'm just focused on that for most of the morning. This morning I was getting John ready, right? And so just all the scramble of that and getting a toddler ready and kind of run through my sermon, juggling Bluey and Lucky Charms and then coming back and trying to go through it. And then at 9.20, I'm like, okay, I'm ahead of the game. This is really good. It's time to go to church. I've got plenty of time. And I go to get all my things, and I'm like, I don't know where my car key is. I can't find my car key. And so I just start frantically looking for my car key and at 935 I called our good friend Anna Johnson and I was like, hey I think I need a ride to church. You have a car seat. She had pulled in the parking lot. She was like, all right coming to get you. And so she came around and as we pulled up I said, Anna park front and center because this is a great look for me to show up with you at church while my wife is out of town. So when I say, I don't know what's about to come out of my mouth, it's honest. All right. And if you're sitting there thinking, is this an elaborate way for him to excuse a potentially terrible sermon? Yeah, that is. All right. It's June. Ride with me. In one way, I'm completely frazzled and off center on the sermon and I'm just really hoping and praying that the Lord will order my steps and my thoughts because I want to do justice to this passage because it's one that I love so much. In another way, and I'm reminded of this by the Holy Spirit from time to time, God's been preparing this sermon in my heart and in my head for 20 years. I love this passage. I love where we are. We are at Moses and the burning bush. And I love it so much that we're going to spend two weeks here. We're going to look this week at the five excuses of Moses and how we can relate to those. And the next week we're going to come back to what God says his name is, I am, because that is an amazing statement worthy of camping on for a week. As we arrive here this morning, what I want to bring to mind is something that we talk about often at Grace, and it's intentional. A few years ago, a good friend of mine was kind of pressing me. What do you want for Grace? What do you want to produce at Grace? What do you want to be about? I knew, based on past church experiences, what I didn't want to be, but he was pressing me into what do you want to be? What do you want grace to be? And that's how I arrived at that phrase that we use here all the time, kingdom builders. At grace, I want to produce a church full of kingdom builders. We have five traits at grace. If you leave, if you go out those doors, on the wall, over the glass windows and over the doors are the five traits of grace. People of devotion, step-takers, partners, conduits of grace, and kingdom builders. Those are all out there. That's who we want you to be. And the apex of that is to be a kingdom builder, someone who builds God's kingdom. And the idea is simply this. We acknowledge at Grace that we all spend our lives building a kingdom. The question is, whose kingdom are you building? Are you going to waste your life building your little fiefdom? And maybe you're really good at it, and you leave an inheritance and a legacy that lasts for a generation or two. But eventually it will pass away. Are you going to invest your life building your kingdom? Or are you going to invest your life building God's kingdom? And so at Grace, the goal is to have a church full of kingdom builders. People who understand that every gift, every talent, all the time, all the treasure that I've ever been given is to be leveraged to help build God's eternal kingdom, not my sorry temporary one. That's what we try to press on you over and over and over again. And it's my desire to have a church full of activated kingdom builders who understand that every gift they've ever been given is to be used to build God's kingdom, not their own. It's why I so often return to Ephesians 2.10 that says, we are God's workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works that we might walk in them. And so the idea here is when God knit you in your mother's womb, he had for you good works for you to walk in. Just like he had good works for Moses to walk in. And it's your job as an adult to find those good works and to faithfully walk in them. Parents, it's your job to help your children identify their good works and encourage them and inspire them to walk in them with trust and fidelity to their God. This is what we talk about at Grace all the time. And when we talk about kingdom builders, I'm talking about things big and small. Some of us have big God-sized dreams that we don't dare give breath to because we're afraid people might judge us or that it's impossible and we shy away from it. Others of us have small God dreams right now of just repairing our marriage or a relationship or just growing in our own faith or just getting to a place where we can actually reliably and dutifully disciple our own children. I don't know what the size of your dreams are and I don't know what God has placed on your heart, but here's what I do know. And here's what I am certain of that. God has given you something that he wants you to do. God is pressing on you to take a step of obedience, to build his kingdom, whether that's through generosity, whether that's through a relationship, whether it's realizing that you have been placed in your workplace to be a pastor there, not to forward and advance your career there. That's secondary to your primary role of being a missionary and a pastor in your workplace. Maybe it's simply to prepare your marriage, to repair your marriage. Maybe it's to start a ministry. Maybe it's to start a small group. Maybe it's to start a Bible study. Maybe it's to volunteer somewhere and get involved in a nonprofit. I don't know what God is pressing on each of you to do, but I am certain that he's pressing something somewhere. And so this morning is only going to work if you can lock into that. If you can lock into what that is, and you can ask God, God, what are you pressing on me to do? What should I think about? What should I consider? What's my next step of obedience? What would you have me start? What would you have me stop so I can start? What would you have me do? What conversation would you have me initiate? What neighbor would you have me reach out to? What Bible study would you have me start? What nonprofit would you have me volunteer with? This sermon only works if you're willing to lock into what God has for you to do to build his kingdom. I kind of feel a little bit this morning, this isn't completely true because I do think it's universally applicable if you'll tap into it and let it be, but I kind of feel this morning that this is almost an old school Marine recruitment tactic. I've heard stories of a guy that signed up for the Marines and there was an assembly at a school and the different armed forces, armed services came and they presented, this is why you should join the Army. This is why you should join the Navy, the Air Force. And they kind of did, this is awesome. You get to fly planes. You get to do this. You get to do this. You get to do this. And the Marine goes last. And the Marine comes up, and a lot of you guys know how this story goes. The Marine comes up, and he says, I've been watching you all. There's three, maybe four of you that have what it takes to be a Marine. If you think that's you, I'll be at my desk. That's it. That's the talk. Who has the most recruits? The Marine. Right. That's what I feel like this morning is. This sermon is not for everybody. Some of you are not ready for it. You're just not. That's okay. But some of you are. And if it's you, I want to press you this morning to answer God's call and to step into the obedience to which he is calling you. So let's press in together and learn from the example of Moses at the burning bush. goes out. Remember, as a young man, he walked out of the palace one day, and he saw Egyptian guards beating some Hebrews, some of his brethren, and he went to their defense, and he was so angry and virulent in his defense that he ended up murdering the two guards that were beating the Hebrew people, and so he had to flee. And he went to a place called Midian, and Midian had a priest named Jethro, and Jethro had seven daughters, and one of them was named Zipporah, and Moses married her. And he spent 40 years in the desert as a shepherd, long gone from his previous life in the palace. And one day he's shepherding, and an angel of the Lord appears to him, and there's a bush that's being burned but not consumed and he walks up to it. And in the subsequent reading, what you'll find is that the bush tells him, take your shoes off. You are on holy ground. And he realizes that he's in the very presence of God and God asks him to go do something. God, in our vernacular, we would say, God says, this is how I want you to go build my kingdom. Go and do this. And he tells Moses, I need you to go to Pharaoh, and I need you to tell him to let my people go. And I know that I alluded to this last week, but I want us to be on the same page as far as this ask, because it's a ludicrous ask, right? For some farmer to come, some shepherd from the wilderness to come into the most powerful palace in the world and walk up to the most powerful man in the world and say, I need you to let your slaves go. Let's understand that it's not just slaves and it's not just the ego of that, but this is his very economy. This is how he gets things done. If he lets the Hebrew people go, it's not just, well, that was a possession that we had and now we don't have it anymore. If he lets them go, it's, this is my workforce. This is how I get things done. This is how I pay the bills. This fundamentally changes the foundation of my country. So it's a pretty big ask. And God says, I want you, Moses, to make that ask. And Moses, in this discourse with God, offers five excuses. And I think that they're, I think that they're wonderful. I think it's a really a delightful discourse if you read it and you open your mind to what it must have been like to be there. And I think that we have this discourse with God, whatever you say, whatever, whatever is in your heart that God is calling you to do, however, God wants you to build his kingdom. And here's what I would say about being kingdom builders. One of the reasons we phrase it this way is some churches are, they're the orphan church at this church. We care for orphans and that's wonderful. At this church, we do prison ministry at this church. We do missions missions. At this church, we do children's. At this church, we do outreach to the unhoused. Whatever it may be, some churches have a specific thing that they funnel everyone to. And that's wonderful and good. And I would not deride any of those. Those are always choices between better and best. But at Grace, what we said is, I don't want to direct you where I think God wants you to go. I want you to walk with God and go where he would have you go. And if you can build his kingdom from here, wonderful. If you need to leave this church to go and build God's kingdom elsewhere, good. Be a kingdom builder. So that's our heart. And I don't know what God is calling you to as he seeks to use you to build his kingdom. But I do know that whatever is in your head and whatever you think it might be, we have some of the same excuses that Moses has at the burning bush. And so here's the first one in verse 11 of chapter 3 after God has told him what he wants to do. But Moses said to God, who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt? Who am I that I could possibly do this? I'm nobody, God. I'm a shepherd. I've been a shepherd for 40 years. No one's going to listen to me. You've got the wrong guy. And this is our natural instinct too. I know somebody who's very dear to me that every time they think of an idea of what God would have them do, they have this voice in their head that probably needs some counseling that pops up that says, who do you think you are? You're not going to do that. You're not going to follow through with that. You're not actually going to do it. And so I would be willing to bet that even as I pressed upon you, what's your thing? What does God want you to do? How can you tomorrow begin to build his kingdom? What steps of obedience can you take? For many of us in this room, our very first thought, if we even had the guts to identify that and say it out loud, speak it to ourselves, I bet for a lot of us the very next thought was, who do you think you are? Who am I that you would send me to do that? I'm not going to, that person's not going to listen to me. No one's going to come to my Bible study. I can't be a pastor in my workplace. They know who I am. And we begin like Moses to disqualify ourselves. So it's helpful to look at God's response when he says, who am I? And God said, I will be with you. And this will be a sign that it is I who have sent you. You have brought the people out of Egypt. You will worship God on this mountain. He's like, I'm going to be with you. I will come back here. And so if God is calling you to something, he will be with you in it. But that's Moses's first excuse. So Moses says, who am I? And God says, it doesn't matter who you are. It matters who I am. I'll be with you. Don't worry about it. God swats it aside. And Moses says, okay, I've got another one. Here's my other excuse. Here's his next question. Verse 13. I'm just going to read straight through so you guys can get a sense of the passage. And God said, I will be with you. And this will be a sign that it is I who has sent you. When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain. Verse 13. Moses said to God, suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, the God of your fathers has sent me to you. And they asked me, what is his name? Then what shall I tell them? And then this won't be on the screen, but verse 14 is, this is where we're going to spend all of our time next week. It's maybe the most amazing verse in Scripture. God said to Moses, I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites. I am has sent me to you. This is where we get the name of God. I am. And that's what we're going to talk about next week. This name of God is so powerful that 4,000 years later, Jesus is being arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane by 300 guards of the high priest. And they go to him and they say, are you Jesus of Nazareth? And he says, I am. And those words knock over all 300 guards. These are powerful words. God says, I am. But let's look at what Moses is asking. Okay, okay, all right, all right. I'm going to go back to my people. I'm going to go to the elders of the Hebrews. I'm going to say, God has sent me from Midian here to free our people, and I need your support as I go to Pharaoh and begin to negotiate our release. When I do that, God, this is something you think is possible, which is ridiculous. When I do that, who should I say sent me? What is your name? We're going to talk about God's answer to that next week. But here's the point of Moses' question for this week. Moses is asking, God, will you put your name on this? Will you put your name on this mission? Is this something you are behind? Is this something you are supporting? Am I doing this in your name or am I doing this in my own name? And when we feel that God has directed us to build his kingdom in a certain way, it is right and good to pause and say, God, are you putting your name on this? Because if God's name is on it, then he will see it through. But if God's name is not, then it is on us. And that is not good. So before we take a step of faith and obedience and walk, we need to be sure that God's name is on it. A few weeks ago in FAQ, I was talking about how can we be certain that we have heard from God? How do we know that we know that we know? And I said, you can test him sometimes. Look at what Gideon did with the fleece. God, make this wet and the ground dry. Okay, God, that was a neat trick. Make this dry and the ground wet. Okay, God, thank you. Now I know that I know that I know that your name is on this project and you want me to go do it. It's good to ask if God has put his name on something before we go. I remember at my previous church, and this is one of those moments where I hope that no one from my previous church is listening to my sermons because it's a little bit disparaging and I don't mean it to be. It's just a good illustration of this. My senior pastor was a guy named Jonathan who gave me tremendous opportunities and is still supportive to this day and is really wonderful as a human. And we, at the time, were running three services, 9.30, 10.30, or 11 and noon or something like that. Yeah, 9, 10.30 and noon. And so we were redlining. And those were pretty full. Noon wasn't very full, but we were redlining as a church. And we had some people who wanted to come, but we had a lot of them in the service industry. And so they weren't able to make it to Sunday morning because they were paramedics or nurses or servers or whatever. And Sunday morning was difficult for them. So Jonathan got the idea, let's do a 5 p.m. service. Let's have a Sunday evening service for folks that have to work on Sunday mornings or just would rather come to that. Betty and Steve Rock would love that. They would be the first to sign up. They bug me about it every week. Sorry, Beth. We're not doing it today. And he said, let's do this. But I don't want to preach it. That's too much work. And I don't want our band to have to do it. That's too much work for our volunteers, which about the second point, he was right. About the first point, come on, man, just go preach. But he didn't want to preach it. So he said, we're going to show a video and I'm going to be too tired to run it. So Nate, you be the campus pastor for the 5 p.m. service. You make it go. Recruit people to set up pipe and drape to make the auditorium smaller for the amount of people that are going to be there. Recruit a band, run it, recruit all the volunteers. You're the campus pastor of that service. You be in charge of it. You make it go. It was a big task. And as he and I were talking about it, I remember one day in his office, I looked at him and I said, I just need to know one thing, Jonathan. Do you feel that this is something that God has directed you to do? In today's language for this sermon, I would say, has God put his name on this to you? Has I am sent you? Because I knew that it was going to be discouraging and I knew that it was going to be hard and I knew that it was going to be a tough sell. And I knew that I was going to have to lean on some relationships and some friendships to make this thing go. And I didn't know if it was going to be successful. But I knew that if God put his name on it, that it was going to flourish. And so in those moments of discouragement, I needed to know that Jonathan felt that God had put his name on this and sent him to do it and said, yes, go and execute this thing. Because in those moments of discouragement, I could lean on that moment. That's what I needed. And so I asked him, is this something that you feel strongly God has asked you to and directed you to do? Because if it is, I can have confidence as I walk into it. And his response was, well, let's just see if it works. And I knew it was doomed. I gave it my best effort. We lasted 10, 12 weeks and we folded up the tent. God's name wasn't on it. It's important to say who is sending me? Whose name is on this? We need to know that. And so God says, my name's on it. I am. We're going to talk more next week about what that name means. But he says, you have me. You tell them I am sent you. I'm putting my name on this mission, on this instruction to go build my kingdom. You go. And so Moses says, okay. And you would think that this would be enough. That Moses says, who am I to go? And God says, don't worry about who you are. You worry about who I am. And Moses says, well, I don't have the ability. And he says, I'm going to supply you with the ability. And God says, well, who should I say, send me? And he says, yeah, I will send you. Okay, put my name on it. You're good. You should think that would be enough. But Moses has another excuse. In chapter 4, verse 1. After this whole discourse, this I am, I'm going to give you the power. I'm going to do this. I'm going to do that. Moses' response, because he's human, is, what if they do not believe me or listen to me and say the Lord did not appear to you? Moses says, no one's going to believe me. No one's going to listen to me. I'm going to go and I'm going to say, hey, God sent me and you guys have been in these moments. Or someone tells you that God has told them to do a thing and because we're jerks, our skeptical minds go, did he? So Moses says, I'm going to go and say that I'm doing this in your name and no one's going to believe me. I'm a shepherd from Midian. No one's going to buy this. What do I do? And God's response is really amazing. God says, do you see the staff in your hand? Moses, we presume, based on the text, is holding a staff. And he says, yeah. And God goes, throw it down. Moses threw it on the ground and it became a serpent. And God said, pick it back up. Moses bends down and he grabs the serpent and it becomes a staff. And God says, that's nothing, buddy. I've got a lot more of these in my back pocket. If anybody needs proof that you're with me, I'll give you a sign when you need it. You're fine. It's this little wink. I'm going to take care of you. I'm going to show you. And I believe that God is still in the business of doing these things. I believe that God is still in the business of winking at us. He may not turn your staff into a serpent and your serpent into a staff, but he will show you. If there's something that you think God wants you to do and you're trepidatious about it and you don't even dare breathe it and speak it out loud because it makes you so nervous and it makes you so worried. If there is something that you believe God is pressing on you to do and you're not sure if you should do it, God will give you those staff moments. He will give you those winks where he tells you that he is with you. I've had so many of those at Grace, so many of them. It's not very many times that I've been brought to a place where I'm thinking about maybe I need to quit. This is too hard. This is too difficult. Maybe I just need to get out of the way so they can get a real pastor that actually cares about others and things like that. Thanks. Maybe I need to get out of the way. Maybe I'm not in the right job. Maybe I need to quit. I'm just so discouraged. And the very next day, God turns a staff into a serpent. He encourages me in this uniquely God way. And I go, okay, all right, we're in. I remember, I guess it was last week, I mentioned Memorial Day is very special to me at Grace. And so I always preach on Memorial Day because of how grateful I am for what God has done on Memorial Day. It was the first year that I was here. And when I got here in 2017, it was a bad scene. To say it was a dumpster fire is actually a disservice to dumpster fires. It was really bad. If they didn't hire some poor schlep in April, they were not going to make it out of May. It's just where we were. We were in debt. It was bad. And at the time, we were looking week to week at offering. And when I got here and I saw the finances, I just said, I just made it my prayer, God, please don't let us go into any more debt over the summer. Please just let us get through the summer because the summer is bad giving months, just typically at a church. I said, just let us make it through the summer without accruing any debt. And then maybe we can start to chip away at it in the fall. That was my prayer. And we were coming to the end of May. Memorial Day is the last weekend of May. And we needed, I don't remember the numbers, so just go with me, but I think we needed about $11,000 a week to stay afloat. I have no idea what it is now. Probably $47,000. That's how much we need every week. Just give it. But we needed like $11,000 to stay afloat. And that particular week, we needed $13,000 to come in. And again, don't quote me on these numbers, but these are approximate. We need $13,000 to come in just to not go into debt and be able to pay our bills in May. And I remember praying that week, God, please allow $13,000 to come in, which on its face is an absurd prayer because Memorial Day in church world, we all know it's one of the lowest attendance attended and lowest giving Sundays of the year, Memorial Day and Labor Day. So the idea that we would need to bring in whatever it was, 15, 10 to 20% more on a particular week. That was a holiday weekend where nobody comes and nobody gives was an absurd prayer. It was a miracle in and of itself, but I remember praying it. God just let $13,000 come in. And we get to the Tuesday. Tuesday is when I learned what the giving was from our finance director, and I'm just refreshing my email, waiting for it to come in to see if God delivered on this prayer. And I got the email and I frantically click on it and $13,000 did not come in. $28,500 did. It was the largest Sunday of giving of 2017 until December. It was amazing. And I saw God turn my staff into a serpent. And then my serpent into a staff. And he said, I'm here. I got you. I'm with you. Let's go. You're in my hands. And there have been other moments. And so now what I say about grace, Aaron Winston likes it when I say this, God likes grace. I don't know why. He just does. Look at us. Who would have thought? He just likes us. And he's just rooting for us. And he's with us. And he shows up in these amazing ways when he turns our staff into a serpent and our serpent into a staff. And if God is calling you to do something and you have a moment's hesitation about it, I'm certain if you pray for it and if you look for it, he will turn that staff into a serpent for you too. And he will turn that serpent into a staff. Just give him a chance to show up and wink at you. But once he does, walk in faith. Once he does, walk in courage. But don't be like Moses, because Moses saw that cool trick and he's like, yeah, great. But how about this? Fourth excuse. Exodus 4, 10. Moses said to the Lord, I mentioned this last week, Pardon your servant, Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue. This is a legitimate gripe. We talked about last week that scholars believe that this probably indicates that he had a speech impediment of some sort, that Moses more than likely stuttered or had some other thing that kept him from speaking eloquently. He was not silver-tongued. He was not charming. Moses was not the guy. There's some people that when you go to dinner and they sit on a certain side of the table and you're on the other side of the table, you're bummed out because all the fun's down there and I have to talk to stupid matt down here you know it's just a bummer you want to be with this guy moses wasn't that guy moses for the sake of this illustration was matt sorry matt that's what you get for sitting on the front row pal he wasn't eloquent he wasnspoken. And how is he supposed to go in to the most powerful man in the world and make these negotiations? How is he supposed to do this? God, you've called me to this thing, but it's not in my skill set. That's not what I'm good at. You want me to be like Chief Shepard? We can talk about that. You want me to go negotiate with the most powerful man in the world? I'm not silver-tongued. I can't do this. So he says, I'm not qualified. I don't have the skill set for that. And I would be willing to bet that if there's something that God is pressing on you, something you need to start, something you need to stop, a conversation you need to initiate, a relationship that you need to patch up, a step of obedience that he wants you to take, I'd be willing to bet that for a lot of us, we kind of go, we disqualify ourselves. We go, I don't have the right skill set. God, you've got the wrong person. Those are not where my talents and abilities lie. I don't think I can do this. That's what Moses said. And you know what God said to Moses? Hey, pal, I made you. I made your mouth. I made your brain. I'll give you the words. Don't worry about it. And later we see, I'm also going to give you your brother Aaron, who is silver-tongued and is good at doing it. I will put, not only will I give you what you need to do to get this done, but I will put people around you who can help you get this done. This is an amazing thing that God does as he sends us to build his kingdom is not only does he give us the skill set that we need to get it done in his goodness and in his grace, but he also surrounds us with the right people who supplement us where we are weak. I can't tell you how blessed I feel in the decisions that we make as a church that at every decision, at every turn, every big thing that we we do, I am surrounded by people both in my elder board and in my friendships and in my advisors and on our committees who are smarter than me about that particular area. They're not smarter than me in general, okay? I'm not willing to concede that. But they're smarter than me in that particular area. And we lean on their expertise and they advise us, God, I am weak here. I can't guide the church in this way. Great. Here's five people to surround you that know more than you about that, and probably are, in reality, smarter than you. You should listen to them. God does this. He doesn't just equip us for what he calls us to, but he surrounds us with the right people that we can lean on and trust as we walk into that. And so that's Moses' last excuse. I don't have the skill set. And God says, I know. I do. I made you. I'm calling you to this. I've put my name on it. I've winked at you. You can go. I've got you. And then we get to Moses' final excuse, which is frankly hilarious. Exodus 4, 12 and 14. Now go. I will help you speak and will teach you what to say. This is what God says to Moses. But Moses says, pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else. Now we're just at the heart of it, right? Like the rest of it was smoke and mirrors, you know? When you ask your kid to do something and they give you all the reasons why they can't do it. And you're just like, yeah, you just don't want to do it. You're just being lazy. Like, yeah, I know. And then they have to go do it. All the smoke and mirrors are gone. Now we get to the heart of the issue. Oh Lord. Fine. I hear what you're saying. Please send someone else. Like I'm comfortable. I've got a life. I'm fine. I don't want to upset the apple cart. I'm used to this. I've been a shepherd for 40 years. This is normal to me. This is what my life is. I'm old. I'm in my sixties. I'm like really old. You know, we're just coasting until the retirement home at this point. When you hit 65, like you're just waiting, right? I'm good. I'm comfortable. Please don't make me do this. Which is what we say. God, my relationships are good. My life is good. My life is comfortable. Don't make me upset the apple cart. Don't make me be the weird one at work. Don't make me be the weird one in the neighborhood. Don't make me rearrange my, I'm 40. Don't make me rearrange my life around those things. That's not how I set things up. God, please, God, send someone else is what we tend to say. And this is the first time this happens, and I think it's amazing. Verse 14, then the Lord's anger burned against Moses. And he said, what about your brother Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He's already on his way to meet you. He'll be glad to see you. So Moses says, I want to have. I've placated you. I've put my name on it. I've given you a sign. I've assured you that I'll be with you, that I created you, that I'll give you the words to speak. I'm even bringing your brother Aaron to go with you. Go do the thing you're supposed to do. And whenever I read this, my thought is, may the wrath of God never be kindled against me because after all the assurances in the world for the thing he wants me to go do, I still have the response of, oh Lord, please send someone else. No! You go do it. You do it. You do it. I don't know what God's pressing on you. I don't know what he would have you start or have you do. But here's what else I know. Or here's what I do know. Moses, from this moment at the burning bush, goes on and becomes, this is true, one of the most known figures in human history. You understand, every tribe and every nation and every tongue virtually that has ever existed from this point on knows the story of Moses. They know who he was. They know what he did. Moses had no idea at the burning bush that the first five books of the Holy Bible would be called the books of Moses. He had no idea that he would bring God's law down from Mount Sinai and give it to the people and that that law would echo through the centuries for Jesus to satisfy it. He had no idea that in eternity he was going to appear with Jesus at the transfiguration on top of a mountain thousands of years later. He had no idea that God is going to use him in Revelation as one of the two witnesses. He had no idea what was in front of him. All he knew is that he needed to do the next thing that God asked him to do. Very quickly, I want to tell you this story because I think it's relevant. I'll try to go fast because we're at the end of our time. I have a friend who was on staff with me at my last church at Greystone, a guy named Jim Hollinsworth. Jim was the associate pastor, executive pastor there. And one Christmas, his small group received something from a sort of co-op that provides things for people in need. And there was a stack of papers of families that were in need and they needed some Christmas gifts that year, much like we do with the tree that we do every year. And him and Melinda at Small Group picked up a piece of paper and there was a family on it that happened to live in a particular trailer park down the road. And all of the families that their small group picked were located in that trailer park. So Jim and Melinda said, gather your stuff and we'll go drop it off. We'll be fine to do that. And so they go to drop it off. And I was talking to Jim this morning because I wanted to get the origin story right. And he said they felt his word was icky going the first time which makes sense but they went anyways and they dropped off these gifts and they dropped off this gift with a single mom and it happened to be in a trailer park where the population was 95% Mexican immigrant and they made they made a good connection with this mom and they kept in touch and so they just followed up to see how she was doing, see if she needed anything in January. And through conversation, one of the things she said is, you know, my kid's going into middle school. I don't speak English. They're struggling academically, and I don't know how to help them. Can you help them? And Melinda said, sure. And so she started showing up at the community center and tutoring this kid after school a few days a week. Well, that kid's friends found out. Another mom started sending more kids to Melinda. And then Jim started going. And then they got a volunteer to start working with them. And then it grew and it grew and it grew. Within a couple of years' time, it became a ministry known as the Path Project. They bought a trailer in that trailer park. They served out of there full time. Melinda quit her job to do this full time. Jim went halftime at the church to give time to Path Project. And then there were more needs and an after-school program and then ESOL for the parents so they could go be advocates for their children in the schools. And then this remarkable thing happened. The company that owned that trailer park reached out to Jim and he says, I don't know what you're doing, but I will give you a free trailer in any trailer park that I own across the country because crime is down, graduation rates are up, rent payment is up. Things are more consistent. This is across the board better for the community. Can we do more of these? Then you fast forward five years and I'm in a gala where things are being auctioned that I can't afford at all. I'm just watching rich people compete with themselves to support Path Project. It's amazing. Jim does it full time. They're nationwide. He didn't have the skill set. He was not a fundraiser when God called him to do this. There was not a vision in there in Jim and Melinda's mind that we're going to go nationwide with community centers and trailer parks to do after school programs and ESOL and offer haircuts and just general hygiene. That was not in their mind. All they did is take the next step. They didn't know at their burning bush what God was going to do. They just knew that they needed to buy some gifts for this family. And then while they were there, they needed to talk to her. God is pressing on you to do something. And maybe it's so big, this is what excites me. There's somebody in here. It's not everybody, and I don't know who. But there's something in your head that's so big that you're scared to say it out loud. You're who I'm preaching to. Do it. Take the step. Do the thing. Let this be your burning bush. Allow God to push you into obedience. Ask him if his name is on it. Watch him turn staffs into serpents and serpents into staffs. Let his assurance wash over you. And when it comes down to you admitting that you need to do it, don't be like Moses and say, oh Lord, please send someone else. Just go do the thing and let's see what God does with a church full of kingdom builders that he is enabling and equipping for his ministry. The last point is simply this. If God is calling you to something, he will equip you for it. If there is something God is pressing on your heart to do, do it. And let's see what happens. Let's pray. Father, thank you so much for this morning. Thank you for stories like Jim and Melinda's. Thank you for Moses. Thank you for keeping for us a record of this discourse at the burning bush. For us to see how you give assurances, how you wink at us, how you put your name on things. How you give us the skills that we lack and how you provide for us the people that we need. God, I pray that this can be a burning bush moment for some people in here who will go and do the thing, who will start the ministry or reach out to the people or begin to take the steps. God, make us a church full of kingdom builders, full of people who seek to allow their lives and their time and their talents and their treasures to be used by you to further your kingdom. Give us a distaste for our own such that all we want to do is build yours. Equip us to go, point us in the direction, and wind us up and sustain us as we run towards you. Use us, Lord. Make us kingdom builders. In Jesus' name, amen.

Well, good morning, everyone. My name is Nate. I get to be one of the pastors here. It's so good to see everybody. I've got a lot of people sitting in seats that they don't normally go in. I don't know what you're doing over there, Zach, DJ, Laura, what in the world? I'm totally distracted. And just, I need to give you a peek behind the scenes before I just dive into the sermon like there's nothing happening in my life. I know I'm jovial now. This is serious. Yesterday, my sister-in-law, Jen's sister, Lauren, was in a really bad car accident and has just a lot of broken bones and is currently in surgery. The doctors say that she will recover and walk again, which is just a wild sentence to hear about your sister-in-law on a normal Saturday. So Jen was doing something yesterday afternoon, got home, grabbed Lily, and fired down to Athens, Georgia. So she's down there. So I've got John. Normally on a Sunday morning, I get up at 5, I shower, I come into the office, I'm locked in at 545, I run through the sermon, and I just kind of steep it and I try not to let anything distract me and I just focus on that. And then at about 930, I come over here and I glad hand you guys and pretend like I'm not trying to think about my sermon. But I'm just focused on that for most of the morning. This morning I was getting John ready, right? And so just all the scramble of that and getting a toddler ready and kind of run through my sermon, juggling Bluey and Lucky Charms and then coming back and trying to go through it. And then at 9.20, I'm like, okay, I'm ahead of the game. This is really good. It's time to go to church. I've got plenty of time. And I go to get all my things, and I'm like, I don't know where my car key is. I can't find my car key. And so I just start frantically looking for my car key and at 935 I called our good friend Anna Johnson and I was like, hey I think I need a ride to church. You have a car seat. She had pulled in the parking lot. She was like, all right coming to get you. And so she came around and as we pulled up I said, Anna park front and center because this is a great look for me to show up with you at church while my wife is out of town. So when I say, I don't know what's about to come out of my mouth, it's honest. All right. And if you're sitting there thinking, is this an elaborate way for him to excuse a potentially terrible sermon? Yeah, that is. All right. It's June. Ride with me. In one way, I'm completely frazzled and off center on the sermon and I'm just really hoping and praying that the Lord will order my steps and my thoughts because I want to do justice to this passage because it's one that I love so much. In another way, and I'm reminded of this by the Holy Spirit from time to time, God's been preparing this sermon in my heart and in my head for 20 years. I love this passage. I love where we are. We are at Moses and the burning bush. And I love it so much that we're going to spend two weeks here. We're going to look this week at the five excuses of Moses and how we can relate to those. And the next week we're going to come back to what God says his name is, I am, because that is an amazing statement worthy of camping on for a week. As we arrive here this morning, what I want to bring to mind is something that we talk about often at Grace, and it's intentional. A few years ago, a good friend of mine was kind of pressing me. What do you want for Grace? What do you want to produce at Grace? What do you want to be about? I knew, based on past church experiences, what I didn't want to be, but he was pressing me into what do you want to be? What do you want grace to be? And that's how I arrived at that phrase that we use here all the time, kingdom builders. At grace, I want to produce a church full of kingdom builders. We have five traits at grace. If you leave, if you go out those doors, on the wall, over the glass windows and over the doors are the five traits of grace. People of devotion, step-takers, partners, conduits of grace, and kingdom builders. Those are all out there. That's who we want you to be. And the apex of that is to be a kingdom builder, someone who builds God's kingdom. And the idea is simply this. We acknowledge at Grace that we all spend our lives building a kingdom. The question is, whose kingdom are you building? Are you going to waste your life building your little fiefdom? And maybe you're really good at it, and you leave an inheritance and a legacy that lasts for a generation or two. But eventually it will pass away. Are you going to invest your life building your kingdom? Or are you going to invest your life building God's kingdom? And so at Grace, the goal is to have a church full of kingdom builders. People who understand that every gift, every talent, all the time, all the treasure that I've ever been given is to be leveraged to help build God's eternal kingdom, not my sorry temporary one. That's what we try to press on you over and over and over again. And it's my desire to have a church full of activated kingdom builders who understand that every gift they've ever been given is to be used to build God's kingdom, not their own. It's why I so often return to Ephesians 2.10 that says, we are God's workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works that we might walk in them. And so the idea here is when God knit you in your mother's womb, he had for you good works for you to walk in. Just like he had good works for Moses to walk in. And it's your job as an adult to find those good works and to faithfully walk in them. Parents, it's your job to help your children identify their good works and encourage them and inspire them to walk in them with trust and fidelity to their God. This is what we talk about at Grace all the time. And when we talk about kingdom builders, I'm talking about things big and small. Some of us have big God-sized dreams that we don't dare give breath to because we're afraid people might judge us or that it's impossible and we shy away from it. Others of us have small God dreams right now of just repairing our marriage or a relationship or just growing in our own faith or just getting to a place where we can actually reliably and dutifully disciple our own children. I don't know what the size of your dreams are and I don't know what God has placed on your heart, but here's what I do know. And here's what I am certain of that. God has given you something that he wants you to do. God is pressing on you to take a step of obedience, to build his kingdom, whether that's through generosity, whether that's through a relationship, whether it's realizing that you have been placed in your workplace to be a pastor there, not to forward and advance your career there. That's secondary to your primary role of being a missionary and a pastor in your workplace. Maybe it's simply to prepare your marriage, to repair your marriage. Maybe it's to start a ministry. Maybe it's to start a small group. Maybe it's to start a Bible study. Maybe it's to volunteer somewhere and get involved in a nonprofit. I don't know what God is pressing on each of you to do, but I am certain that he's pressing something somewhere. And so this morning is only going to work if you can lock into that. If you can lock into what that is, and you can ask God, God, what are you pressing on me to do? What should I think about? What should I consider? What's my next step of obedience? What would you have me start? What would you have me stop so I can start? What would you have me do? What conversation would you have me initiate? What neighbor would you have me reach out to? What Bible study would you have me start? What nonprofit would you have me volunteer with? This sermon only works if you're willing to lock into what God has for you to do to build his kingdom. I kind of feel a little bit this morning, this isn't completely true because I do think it's universally applicable if you'll tap into it and let it be, but I kind of feel this morning that this is almost an old school Marine recruitment tactic. I've heard stories of a guy that signed up for the Marines and there was an assembly at a school and the different armed forces, armed services came and they presented, this is why you should join the Army. This is why you should join the Navy, the Air Force. And they kind of did, this is awesome. You get to fly planes. You get to do this. You get to do this. You get to do this. And the Marine goes last. And the Marine comes up, and a lot of you guys know how this story goes. The Marine comes up, and he says, I've been watching you all. There's three, maybe four of you that have what it takes to be a Marine. If you think that's you, I'll be at my desk. That's it. That's the talk. Who has the most recruits? The Marine. Right. That's what I feel like this morning is. This sermon is not for everybody. Some of you are not ready for it. You're just not. That's okay. But some of you are. And if it's you, I want to press you this morning to answer God's call and to step into the obedience to which he is calling you. So let's press in together and learn from the example of Moses at the burning bush. goes out. Remember, as a young man, he walked out of the palace one day, and he saw Egyptian guards beating some Hebrews, some of his brethren, and he went to their defense, and he was so angry and virulent in his defense that he ended up murdering the two guards that were beating the Hebrew people, and so he had to flee. And he went to a place called Midian, and Midian had a priest named Jethro, and Jethro had seven daughters, and one of them was named Zipporah, and Moses married her. And he spent 40 years in the desert as a shepherd, long gone from his previous life in the palace. And one day he's shepherding, and an angel of the Lord appears to him, and there's a bush that's being burned but not consumed and he walks up to it. And in the subsequent reading, what you'll find is that the bush tells him, take your shoes off. You are on holy ground. And he realizes that he's in the very presence of God and God asks him to go do something. God, in our vernacular, we would say, God says, this is how I want you to go build my kingdom. Go and do this. And he tells Moses, I need you to go to Pharaoh, and I need you to tell him to let my people go. And I know that I alluded to this last week, but I want us to be on the same page as far as this ask, because it's a ludicrous ask, right? For some farmer to come, some shepherd from the wilderness to come into the most powerful palace in the world and walk up to the most powerful man in the world and say, I need you to let your slaves go. Let's understand that it's not just slaves and it's not just the ego of that, but this is his very economy. This is how he gets things done. If he lets the Hebrew people go, it's not just, well, that was a possession that we had and now we don't have it anymore. If he lets them go, it's, this is my workforce. This is how I get things done. This is how I pay the bills. This fundamentally changes the foundation of my country. So it's a pretty big ask. And God says, I want you, Moses, to make that ask. And Moses, in this discourse with God, offers five excuses. And I think that they're, I think that they're wonderful. I think it's a really a delightful discourse if you read it and you open your mind to what it must have been like to be there. And I think that we have this discourse with God, whatever you say, whatever, whatever is in your heart that God is calling you to do, however, God wants you to build his kingdom. And here's what I would say about being kingdom builders. One of the reasons we phrase it this way is some churches are, they're the orphan church at this church. We care for orphans and that's wonderful. At this church, we do prison ministry at this church. We do missions missions. At this church, we do children's. At this church, we do outreach to the unhoused. Whatever it may be, some churches have a specific thing that they funnel everyone to. And that's wonderful and good. And I would not deride any of those. Those are always choices between better and best. But at Grace, what we said is, I don't want to direct you where I think God wants you to go. I want you to walk with God and go where he would have you go. And if you can build his kingdom from here, wonderful. If you need to leave this church to go and build God's kingdom elsewhere, good. Be a kingdom builder. So that's our heart. And I don't know what God is calling you to as he seeks to use you to build his kingdom. But I do know that whatever is in your head and whatever you think it might be, we have some of the same excuses that Moses has at the burning bush. And so here's the first one in verse 11 of chapter 3 after God has told him what he wants to do. But Moses said to God, who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt? Who am I that I could possibly do this? I'm nobody, God. I'm a shepherd. I've been a shepherd for 40 years. No one's going to listen to me. You've got the wrong guy. And this is our natural instinct too. I know somebody who's very dear to me that every time they think of an idea of what God would have them do, they have this voice in their head that probably needs some counseling that pops up that says, who do you think you are? You're not going to do that. You're not going to follow through with that. You're not actually going to do it. And so I would be willing to bet that even as I pressed upon you, what's your thing? What does God want you to do? How can you tomorrow begin to build his kingdom? What steps of obedience can you take? For many of us in this room, our very first thought, if we even had the guts to identify that and say it out loud, speak it to ourselves, I bet for a lot of us the very next thought was, who do you think you are? Who am I that you would send me to do that? I'm not going to, that person's not going to listen to me. No one's going to come to my Bible study. I can't be a pastor in my workplace. They know who I am. And we begin like Moses to disqualify ourselves. So it's helpful to look at God's response when he says, who am I? And God said, I will be with you. And this will be a sign that it is I who have sent you. You have brought the people out of Egypt. You will worship God on this mountain. He's like, I'm going to be with you. I will come back here. And so if God is calling you to something, he will be with you in it. But that's Moses's first excuse. So Moses says, who am I? And God says, it doesn't matter who you are. It matters who I am. I'll be with you. Don't worry about it. God swats it aside. And Moses says, okay, I've got another one. Here's my other excuse. Here's his next question. Verse 13. I'm just going to read straight through so you guys can get a sense of the passage. And God said, I will be with you. And this will be a sign that it is I who has sent you. When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain. Verse 13. Moses said to God, suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, the God of your fathers has sent me to you. And they asked me, what is his name? Then what shall I tell them? And then this won't be on the screen, but verse 14 is, this is where we're going to spend all of our time next week. It's maybe the most amazing verse in Scripture. God said to Moses, I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites. I am has sent me to you. This is where we get the name of God. I am. And that's what we're going to talk about next week. This name of God is so powerful that 4,000 years later, Jesus is being arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane by 300 guards of the high priest. And they go to him and they say, are you Jesus of Nazareth? And he says, I am. And those words knock over all 300 guards. These are powerful words. God says, I am. But let's look at what Moses is asking. Okay, okay, all right, all right. I'm going to go back to my people. I'm going to go to the elders of the Hebrews. I'm going to say, God has sent me from Midian here to free our people, and I need your support as I go to Pharaoh and begin to negotiate our release. When I do that, God, this is something you think is possible, which is ridiculous. When I do that, who should I say sent me? What is your name? We're going to talk about God's answer to that next week. But here's the point of Moses' question for this week. Moses is asking, God, will you put your name on this? Will you put your name on this mission? Is this something you are behind? Is this something you are supporting? Am I doing this in your name or am I doing this in my own name? And when we feel that God has directed us to build his kingdom in a certain way, it is right and good to pause and say, God, are you putting your name on this? Because if God's name is on it, then he will see it through. But if God's name is not, then it is on us. And that is not good. So before we take a step of faith and obedience and walk, we need to be sure that God's name is on it. A few weeks ago in FAQ, I was talking about how can we be certain that we have heard from God? How do we know that we know that we know? And I said, you can test him sometimes. Look at what Gideon did with the fleece. God, make this wet and the ground dry. Okay, God, that was a neat trick. Make this dry and the ground wet. Okay, God, thank you. Now I know that I know that I know that your name is on this project and you want me to go do it. It's good to ask if God has put his name on something before we go. I remember at my previous church, and this is one of those moments where I hope that no one from my previous church is listening to my sermons because it's a little bit disparaging and I don't mean it to be. It's just a good illustration of this. My senior pastor was a guy named Jonathan who gave me tremendous opportunities and is still supportive to this day and is really wonderful as a human. And we, at the time, were running three services, 9.30, 10.30, or 11 and noon or something like that. Yeah, 9, 10.30 and noon. And so we were redlining. And those were pretty full. Noon wasn't very full, but we were redlining as a church. And we had some people who wanted to come, but we had a lot of them in the service industry. And so they weren't able to make it to Sunday morning because they were paramedics or nurses or servers or whatever. And Sunday morning was difficult for them. So Jonathan got the idea, let's do a 5 p.m. service. Let's have a Sunday evening service for folks that have to work on Sunday mornings or just would rather come to that. Betty and Steve Rock would love that. They would be the first to sign up. They bug me about it every week. Sorry, Beth. We're not doing it today. And he said, let's do this. But I don't want to preach it. That's too much work. And I don't want our band to have to do it. That's too much work for our volunteers, which about the second point, he was right. About the first point, come on, man, just go preach. But he didn't want to preach it. So he said, we're going to show a video and I'm going to be too tired to run it. So Nate, you be the campus pastor for the 5 p.m. service. You make it go. Recruit people to set up pipe and drape to make the auditorium smaller for the amount of people that are going to be there. Recruit a band, run it, recruit all the volunteers. You're the campus pastor of that service. You be in charge of it. You make it go. It was a big task. And as he and I were talking about it, I remember one day in his office, I looked at him and I said, I just need to know one thing, Jonathan. Do you feel that this is something that God has directed you to do? In today's language for this sermon, I would say, has God put his name on this to you? Has I am sent you? Because I knew that it was going to be discouraging and I knew that it was going to be hard and I knew that it was going to be a tough sell. And I knew that I was going to have to lean on some relationships and some friendships to make this thing go. And I didn't know if it was going to be successful. But I knew that if God put his name on it, that it was going to flourish. And so in those moments of discouragement, I needed to know that Jonathan felt that God had put his name on this and sent him to do it and said, yes, go and execute this thing. Because in those moments of discouragement, I could lean on that moment. That's what I needed. And so I asked him, is this something that you feel strongly God has asked you to and directed you to do? Because if it is, I can have confidence as I walk into it. And his response was, well, let's just see if it works. And I knew it was doomed. I gave it my best effort. We lasted 10, 12 weeks and we folded up the tent. God's name wasn't on it. It's important to say who is sending me? Whose name is on this? We need to know that. And so God says, my name's on it. I am. We're going to talk more next week about what that name means. But he says, you have me. You tell them I am sent you. I'm putting my name on this mission, on this instruction to go build my kingdom. You go. And so Moses says, okay. And you would think that this would be enough. That Moses says, who am I to go? And God says, don't worry about who you are. You worry about who I am. And Moses says, well, I don't have the ability. And he says, I'm going to supply you with the ability. And God says, well, who should I say, send me? And he says, yeah, I will send you. Okay, put my name on it. You're good. You should think that would be enough. But Moses has another excuse. In chapter 4, verse 1. After this whole discourse, this I am, I'm going to give you the power. I'm going to do this. I'm going to do that. Moses' response, because he's human, is, what if they do not believe me or listen to me and say the Lord did not appear to you? Moses says, no one's going to believe me. No one's going to listen to me. I'm going to go and I'm going to say, hey, God sent me and you guys have been in these moments. Or someone tells you that God has told them to do a thing and because we're jerks, our skeptical minds go, did he? So Moses says, I'm going to go and say that I'm doing this in your name and no one's going to believe me. I'm a shepherd from Midian. No one's going to buy this. What do I do? And God's response is really amazing. God says, do you see the staff in your hand? Moses, we presume, based on the text, is holding a staff. And he says, yeah. And God goes, throw it down. Moses threw it on the ground and it became a serpent. And God said, pick it back up. Moses bends down and he grabs the serpent and it becomes a staff. And God says, that's nothing, buddy. I've got a lot more of these in my back pocket. If anybody needs proof that you're with me, I'll give you a sign when you need it. You're fine. It's this little wink. I'm going to take care of you. I'm going to show you. And I believe that God is still in the business of doing these things. I believe that God is still in the business of winking at us. He may not turn your staff into a serpent and your serpent into a staff, but he will show you. If there's something that you think God wants you to do and you're trepidatious about it and you don't even dare breathe it and speak it out loud because it makes you so nervous and it makes you so worried. If there is something that you believe God is pressing on you to do and you're not sure if you should do it, God will give you those staff moments. He will give you those winks where he tells you that he is with you. I've had so many of those at Grace, so many of them. It's not very many times that I've been brought to a place where I'm thinking about maybe I need to quit. This is too hard. This is too difficult. Maybe I just need to get out of the way so they can get a real pastor that actually cares about others and things like that. Thanks. Maybe I need to get out of the way. Maybe I'm not in the right job. Maybe I need to quit. I'm just so discouraged. And the very next day, God turns a staff into a serpent. He encourages me in this uniquely God way. And I go, okay, all right, we're in. I remember, I guess it was last week, I mentioned Memorial Day is very special to me at Grace. And so I always preach on Memorial Day because of how grateful I am for what God has done on Memorial Day. It was the first year that I was here. And when I got here in 2017, it was a bad scene. To say it was a dumpster fire is actually a disservice to dumpster fires. It was really bad. If they didn't hire some poor schlep in April, they were not going to make it out of May. It's just where we were. We were in debt. It was bad. And at the time, we were looking week to week at offering. And when I got here and I saw the finances, I just said, I just made it my prayer, God, please don't let us go into any more debt over the summer. Please just let us get through the summer because the summer is bad giving months, just typically at a church. I said, just let us make it through the summer without accruing any debt. And then maybe we can start to chip away at it in the fall. That was my prayer. And we were coming to the end of May. Memorial Day is the last weekend of May. And we needed, I don't remember the numbers, so just go with me, but I think we needed about $11,000 a week to stay afloat. I have no idea what it is now. Probably $47,000. That's how much we need every week. Just give it. But we needed like $11,000 to stay afloat. And that particular week, we needed $13,000 to come in. And again, don't quote me on these numbers, but these are approximate. We need $13,000 to come in just to not go into debt and be able to pay our bills in May. And I remember praying that week, God, please allow $13,000 to come in, which on its face is an absurd prayer because Memorial Day in church world, we all know it's one of the lowest attendance attended and lowest giving Sundays of the year, Memorial Day and Labor Day. So the idea that we would need to bring in whatever it was, 15, 10 to 20% more on a particular week. That was a holiday weekend where nobody comes and nobody gives was an absurd prayer. It was a miracle in and of itself, but I remember praying it. God just let $13,000 come in. And we get to the Tuesday. Tuesday is when I learned what the giving was from our finance director, and I'm just refreshing my email, waiting for it to come in to see if God delivered on this prayer. And I got the email and I frantically click on it and $13,000 did not come in. $28,500 did. It was the largest Sunday of giving of 2017 until December. It was amazing. And I saw God turn my staff into a serpent. And then my serpent into a staff. And he said, I'm here. I got you. I'm with you. Let's go. You're in my hands. And there have been other moments. And so now what I say about grace, Aaron Winston likes it when I say this, God likes grace. I don't know why. He just does. Look at us. Who would have thought? He just likes us. And he's just rooting for us. And he's with us. And he shows up in these amazing ways when he turns our staff into a serpent and our serpent into a staff. And if God is calling you to do something and you have a moment's hesitation about it, I'm certain if you pray for it and if you look for it, he will turn that staff into a serpent for you too. And he will turn that serpent into a staff. Just give him a chance to show up and wink at you. But once he does, walk in faith. Once he does, walk in courage. But don't be like Moses, because Moses saw that cool trick and he's like, yeah, great. But how about this? Fourth excuse. Exodus 4, 10. Moses said to the Lord, I mentioned this last week, Pardon your servant, Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue. This is a legitimate gripe. We talked about last week that scholars believe that this probably indicates that he had a speech impediment of some sort, that Moses more than likely stuttered or had some other thing that kept him from speaking eloquently. He was not silver-tongued. He was not charming. Moses was not the guy. There's some people that when you go to dinner and they sit on a certain side of the table and you're on the other side of the table, you're bummed out because all the fun's down there and I have to talk to stupid matt down here you know it's just a bummer you want to be with this guy moses wasn't that guy moses for the sake of this illustration was matt sorry matt that's what you get for sitting on the front row pal he wasn't eloquent he wasnspoken. And how is he supposed to go in to the most powerful man in the world and make these negotiations? How is he supposed to do this? God, you've called me to this thing, but it's not in my skill set. That's not what I'm good at. You want me to be like Chief Shepard? We can talk about that. You want me to go negotiate with the most powerful man in the world? I'm not silver-tongued. I can't do this. So he says, I'm not qualified. I don't have the skill set for that. And I would be willing to bet that if there's something that God is pressing on you, something you need to start, something you need to stop, a conversation you need to initiate, a relationship that you need to patch up, a step of obedience that he wants you to take, I'd be willing to bet that for a lot of us, we kind of go, we disqualify ourselves. We go, I don't have the right skill set. God, you've got the wrong person. Those are not where my talents and abilities lie. I don't think I can do this. That's what Moses said. And you know what God said to Moses? Hey, pal, I made you. I made your mouth. I made your brain. I'll give you the words. Don't worry about it. And later we see, I'm also going to give you your brother Aaron, who is silver-tongued and is good at doing it. I will put, not only will I give you what you need to do to get this done, but I will put people around you who can help you get this done. This is an amazing thing that God does as he sends us to build his kingdom is not only does he give us the skill set that we need to get it done in his goodness and in his grace, but he also surrounds us with the right people who supplement us where we are weak. I can't tell you how blessed I feel in the decisions that we make as a church that at every decision, at every turn, every big thing that we we do, I am surrounded by people both in my elder board and in my friendships and in my advisors and on our committees who are smarter than me about that particular area. They're not smarter than me in general, okay? I'm not willing to concede that. But they're smarter than me in that particular area. And we lean on their expertise and they advise us, God, I am weak here. I can't guide the church in this way. Great. Here's five people to surround you that know more than you about that, and probably are, in reality, smarter than you. You should listen to them. God does this. He doesn't just equip us for what he calls us to, but he surrounds us with the right people that we can lean on and trust as we walk into that. And so that's Moses' last excuse. I don't have the skill set. And God says, I know. I do. I made you. I'm calling you to this. I've put my name on it. I've winked at you. You can go. I've got you. And then we get to Moses' final excuse, which is frankly hilarious. Exodus 4, 12 and 14. Now go. I will help you speak and will teach you what to say. This is what God says to Moses. But Moses says, pardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else. Now we're just at the heart of it, right? Like the rest of it was smoke and mirrors, you know? When you ask your kid to do something and they give you all the reasons why they can't do it. And you're just like, yeah, you just don't want to do it. You're just being lazy. Like, yeah, I know. And then they have to go do it. All the smoke and mirrors are gone. Now we get to the heart of the issue. Oh Lord. Fine. I hear what you're saying. Please send someone else. Like I'm comfortable. I've got a life. I'm fine. I don't want to upset the apple cart. I'm used to this. I've been a shepherd for 40 years. This is normal to me. This is what my life is. I'm old. I'm in my sixties. I'm like really old. You know, we're just coasting until the retirement home at this point. When you hit 65, like you're just waiting, right? I'm good. I'm comfortable. Please don't make me do this. Which is what we say. God, my relationships are good. My life is good. My life is comfortable. Don't make me upset the apple cart. Don't make me be the weird one at work. Don't make me be the weird one in the neighborhood. Don't make me rearrange my, I'm 40. Don't make me rearrange my life around those things. That's not how I set things up. God, please, God, send someone else is what we tend to say. And this is the first time this happens, and I think it's amazing. Verse 14, then the Lord's anger burned against Moses. And he said, what about your brother Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He's already on his way to meet you. He'll be glad to see you. So Moses says, I want to have. I've placated you. I've put my name on it. I've given you a sign. I've assured you that I'll be with you, that I created you, that I'll give you the words to speak. I'm even bringing your brother Aaron to go with you. Go do the thing you're supposed to do. And whenever I read this, my thought is, may the wrath of God never be kindled against me because after all the assurances in the world for the thing he wants me to go do, I still have the response of, oh Lord, please send someone else. No! You go do it. You do it. You do it. I don't know what God's pressing on you. I don't know what he would have you start or have you do. But here's what else I know. Or here's what I do know. Moses, from this moment at the burning bush, goes on and becomes, this is true, one of the most known figures in human history. You understand, every tribe and every nation and every tongue virtually that has ever existed from this point on knows the story of Moses. They know who he was. They know what he did. Moses had no idea at the burning bush that the first five books of the Holy Bible would be called the books of Moses. He had no idea that he would bring God's law down from Mount Sinai and give it to the people and that that law would echo through the centuries for Jesus to satisfy it. He had no idea that in eternity he was going to appear with Jesus at the transfiguration on top of a mountain thousands of years later. He had no idea that God is going to use him in Revelation as one of the two witnesses. He had no idea what was in front of him. All he knew is that he needed to do the next thing that God asked him to do. Very quickly, I want to tell you this story because I think it's relevant. I'll try to go fast because we're at the end of our time. I have a friend who was on staff with me at my last church at Greystone, a guy named Jim Hollinsworth. Jim was the associate pastor, executive pastor there. And one Christmas, his small group received something from a sort of co-op that provides things for people in need. And there was a stack of papers of families that were in need and they needed some Christmas gifts that year, much like we do with the tree that we do every year. And him and Melinda at Small Group picked up a piece of paper and there was a family on it that happened to live in a particular trailer park down the road. And all of the families that their small group picked were located in that trailer park. So Jim and Melinda said, gather your stuff and we'll go drop it off. We'll be fine to do that. And so they go to drop it off. And I was talking to Jim this morning because I wanted to get the origin story right. And he said they felt his word was icky going the first time which makes sense but they went anyways and they dropped off these gifts and they dropped off this gift with a single mom and it happened to be in a trailer park where the population was 95% Mexican immigrant and they made they made a good connection with this mom and they kept in touch and so they just followed up to see how she was doing, see if she needed anything in January. And through conversation, one of the things she said is, you know, my kid's going into middle school. I don't speak English. They're struggling academically, and I don't know how to help them. Can you help them? And Melinda said, sure. And so she started showing up at the community center and tutoring this kid after school a few days a week. Well, that kid's friends found out. Another mom started sending more kids to Melinda. And then Jim started going. And then they got a volunteer to start working with them. And then it grew and it grew and it grew. Within a couple of years' time, it became a ministry known as the Path Project. They bought a trailer in that trailer park. They served out of there full time. Melinda quit her job to do this full time. Jim went halftime at the church to give time to Path Project. And then there were more needs and an after-school program and then ESOL for the parents so they could go be advocates for their children in the schools. And then this remarkable thing happened. The company that owned that trailer park reached out to Jim and he says, I don't know what you're doing, but I will give you a free trailer in any trailer park that I own across the country because crime is down, graduation rates are up, rent payment is up. Things are more consistent. This is across the board better for the community. Can we do more of these? Then you fast forward five years and I'm in a gala where things are being auctioned that I can't afford at all. I'm just watching rich people compete with themselves to support Path Project. It's amazing. Jim does it full time. They're nationwide. He didn't have the skill set. He was not a fundraiser when God called him to do this. There was not a vision in there in Jim and Melinda's mind that we're going to go nationwide with community centers and trailer parks to do after school programs and ESOL and offer haircuts and just general hygiene. That was not in their mind. All they did is take the next step. They didn't know at their burning bush what God was going to do. They just knew that they needed to buy some gifts for this family. And then while they were there, they needed to talk to her. God is pressing on you to do something. And maybe it's so big, this is what excites me. There's somebody in here. It's not everybody, and I don't know who. But there's something in your head that's so big that you're scared to say it out loud. You're who I'm preaching to. Do it. Take the step. Do the thing. Let this be your burning bush. Allow God to push you into obedience. Ask him if his name is on it. Watch him turn staffs into serpents and serpents into staffs. Let his assurance wash over you. And when it comes down to you admitting that you need to do it, don't be like Moses and say, oh Lord, please send someone else. Just go do the thing and let's see what God does with a church full of kingdom builders that he is enabling and equipping for his ministry. The last point is simply this. If God is calling you to something, he will equip you for it. If there is something God is pressing on your heart to do, do it. And let's see what happens. Let's pray. Father, thank you so much for this morning. Thank you for stories like Jim and Melinda's. Thank you for Moses. Thank you for keeping for us a record of this discourse at the burning bush. For us to see how you give assurances, how you wink at us, how you put your name on things. How you give us the skills that we lack and how you provide for us the people that we need. God, I pray that this can be a burning bush moment for some people in here who will go and do the thing, who will start the ministry or reach out to the people or begin to take the steps. God, make us a church full of kingdom builders, full of people who seek to allow their lives and their time and their talents and their treasures to be used by you to further your kingdom. Give us a distaste for our own such that all we want to do is build yours. Equip us to go, point us in the direction, and wind us up and sustain us as we run towards you. Use us, Lord. Make us kingdom builders. In Jesus' name, amen.

Good morning. Thank you all for being here, for listening online. My name is Doug Bergeson. Thank you, thank you. It was my hope that I would get that. But to kick things off, I'm going to need a little help from you. The audience, congregation, flock, whatever you want to call yourselves. I need a little help. Who in today's culture, books, movies, TV, podcasts, or even real life would be considered a great detective, a master of deductive logic, one able to take the most cryptic clues, hints, and innuendo and figure out what's going on. I'm asking you all so as not to date myself and come across as a hopelessly out of touch boomer. So a little help, please. Just shout out some names of great detectives, masters of deductive logic from any realm of your experience. Sherlock Holmes. Okay, that's kind of a boomer response, but that's okay. Who else? I would have gotten that one. Who else? Columbo. That I had down too, and I wasn't going to share because it's so out of date. Anyone else? Axel Foley. Okay. Okay. In the first one or the one in the new release? Axel Foley. Okay. Who else? Ace Ventura. Okay. Okay. That's good. That's all I need. I really needed those names, and I appreciate your contributing to make this one point. When you see me being trotted up here to speak on a Sunday morning, you do not have to be a Sherlock Holmes, a Detective Columbo, an Axel Foley, or an Ace Ventura to know that we must be deep, deep, deep into the lazy, languid days of summer. When I plot up here on stage, you have the legitimate right to ask yourself dang why am I not on vacation but be that as it may I am here and I'm excited to share when Nate first reached out to me way back in March he wrote that he we'd be in the middle of our summer series which we started last year called 27 that covers the books of the New Testament and specifically the letters of the Apostle Paul and he said I could pick whichever one I wanted and build a sermon around its overall message. Now typically when asked to preach I deliberate, I agonize, hem and haw wringing my hands over whether I really want to do it or not. But not this time. I was excited and quickly responded to Nate, saying that I would leap at the chance to do the book of Colossians, as it is magisterial and soaring and easily one of my favorite books in all of Scripture. I was pumped. However, just moments later, Nate wrote back, and I quote, Doug, thanks for taking me up on the offer, though I have bad news that I hope will not dissuade you from your acceptance. Aaron preached on Colossians last year, and I failed to mention that to you in my request email. Kyle has also preached on 1 and 2 Thessalonians, so those are off the market as well. So remembering that old saying, fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me, I went back to Nate, explicitly asking him to confirm in writing what books were actually able and available for me to pick. And thankfully for me, and hopefully for you, Paul's letter to the Ephesians was one of them. And that's the book we're going to look at this morning. This letter was written by the Apostle Paul, once among the fiercest and most formidable opponents of the early Christian church. But God, in his wisdom and grace, had chosen Paul, this fervent enemy of the church and most unlikely of all candidates, to be his chosen messenger in spreading the life-changing news of Jesus Christ throughout the known world. And for two to three years, they don't know exactly how long, the city of Ephesus had been base camp for Paul's ministry, for his missionary work, establishing churches throughout the region. Now, by AD 60, some 25 years after his miraculous conversion experience on the road to Damascus, Paul is thought to have written this letter from a prison in Rome. Now, for those familiar with this letter, it is chock full of beautiful and iconic passages. Nate frequently has brought to our attention the last half of chapter 3, which is his favorite prayer in all of Scripture and one he prays over grace often. Ephesians also contains the verses that would shape and fuel the Protestant Reformation 500 years ago. Ephesians 2, 8, and 9 asserting that salvation is only found through God's gracious gift of Jesus Christ and is by faith in him alone. In other words, there's nothing we can do to earn or curry God's favor. For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not fromesians, there are the frequently misunderstood, misappropriated, and sometimes even abused house codes, describing how the relationships between wives and husbands, children and parents, slaves and masters, are to work in light of the Lordship of Christ. Finally, in a very famous passage near the end of the letter, Paul exhorts all believers to put on the full armor of God. And there are more, but this morning, our focus will be on the one overarching theme of this entire letter, our identity as believers, who we truly are now that we are in Christ. According to Paul, everything in both the individual and collective Christian experience, hangs in the balance, directly dependent upon the extent to which we can wrap our minds around this one transcendent and surpassing reality. At this stage of my life, if you were to ask me why I believe what I believe, my most honest and transparent answer would go something like this. I believe because everything I've seen, everything I've learned, and everything I've experienced in my life so far has validated the truth of Scripture. Not just some things, but literally everything has reinforced what the Bible has been saying all along. And despite being such an ancient book, I've for the most part stopped being surprised when I again discover another way in which the Bible is fresh and profoundly modern, relevant, life-changing, and most importantly, true. Here's one quick example from my long-ago past. In 1966, Professors Daniel Katz and Robert Kahn at the University of Michigan published a groundbreaking work in the field of psychology and organizational behavior. By the time I started graduate business school up in Chicago in 1980, Katz and Kahn's cutting-edge theory, only about a dozen years old, had swept through academia and was now all the rage at the elite business schools. What this theory offered was a sweeping transformational alternative to classical business management that up to that point had viewed organizations as machines. Now what this new systems theory proposed was that organizations should best be viewed not as machines but as living organisms. When I first heard this I was floored, blown away. What insight, what brilliance, so outside the box. I'd never in my life heard anything like that before. Oh, wait. Yes, I had. The Apostle Paul had made that very same point when he compared the church and how its members were to operate to a human body in his first letter to the Corinthians, written around A.D. 55. Turns out the Bible had beaten Dr. Katsakan and Kotz to the punch by just over 19 centuries. Much more recently, I was again struck by Scripture's remarkable freshness and relevance, revealing truth and wisdom long before the rest of us even begin to catch up. The occasion was this past fall when I listened to the book, The Coddling of the American Mind. And it has direct relevance and application to what Paul is trying to do in his letter to the Ephesians. Written in 2018 by social psychologist Jonathan Haidt and First Amendment expert Greg Lukianoff, the book makes the case that our society and culture have gradually but steadily moved towards broad acceptance of three great untruths with terrible consequences, particularly for our young people. The three great untruths the authors cite are, one, always trust your feelings. Two, avoid pain and discomfort if you can. And three, life is a battle between good people on the one side and bad people on the other. Even if well intended, as they often are, the book asserts that these beliefs represent terrible and demonstrably false ideas whose adoption and embrace by large swaths of our society have contributed to an epidemic of anxiety and depression and overall decline in our mental health, to the intolerance and turmoil roiling our public discourse, and to the tearing apart of any semblance of social cohesion in this country, to name just a few of the disastrous consequences of these ideas, these patterns of thinking. The book went on to show how these flawed beliefs not only contradicted thousands of years of wisdom literature from a variety of traditions, but also fly in the face of the latest findings of science and modern psychology. That the Bible is prominent among wisdom literature debunking those three great untruths came as no surprise. What did come as a new revelation to me was when the authors introduced something I've never heard of, something called cognitive behavior therapy, or CBT, as an especially effective remedy and tool in combating these three great untruths. Why this is pertinent to Ephesians is that the Bible in its entirety, and the Apostle Paul in particular, espoused and practiced cognitive behavior therapy almost two millennia before it was even a thing. Some of you older folks, as well as any country music freaks out there, might remember the 1981 chart-topping duet by Barbara Mandrell and George Jones, I Was Country Before When Country Wasn't Cool. Does anybody remember that? Yeah, there we go. Well, tweaking that a little bit for my purposes this morning, it turns out that the Apostle Paul was doing cognitive behavior therapy before cognitive behavior therapy was cool. First pioneered in the 1960s, CBT is premised on the idea that how we think and what we think is what determines to a large degree both our emotions and our behavior. Rather than focusing on the origins of a problem as happens in traditional psychotherapy, cognitive behavior therapy works to change our current thinking. It is our incorrect, distorted, and emotional thinking about ourselves and our world, what cognitive behavior therapy refers to as cognitive distortions that must be addressed and changed. In clinical practice over the last several decades, this has been shown to be true as CBT has been proven to be remarkably effective. But zoning in on just the first of those three great untruths, always trust your feelings. It's an important, even vital question to ask, to what extent should our feelings and emotions influence and shape what we think, what we believe to be true? If one has been paying any attention at all, we now live in a society and a culture which have elevated and anointed emotions and feelings to such prominence that they control the moral high ground. And in many instances instances assume ultimate authority, even to the extent of determining what is true and what is not. One simply doesn't question or challenge another's feelings in polite society. After all, that's what you feel. That's your truth, right? Well, no. Wrong. Wrong. Not according to cognitive behavior therapy, and certainly not according to what God has revealed in his word. It turns out that in many instances, God cares far less about our feelings and emotions than we do. It can be off-putting at first, even shocking. After all, if God's supposed to be so loving, how does that compute? But lest anyone here this morning or listening online misses this critical point, it's not that God doesn't care about our feelings and emotions, but that he cares more for those things that have the greatest chance to help us. And from God's vantage point, just as in cognitive behavior therapy, the mind is the key. The mind is the key because how we think determines how we act. Our behavior follows our thoughts and beliefs. And we intuitively know this to be true. If I care to know what you really think, what you really believe, there's no need for me to ask you or for you to tell me. I'll simply watch closely what you do. How do you spend your time and treasure? What you prioritize? What are you willing to stand up for, come what may? When are you quick to compromise and make exceptions? What sacrifices and trade-offs have you made? How do you treat people? How different are you in public than in private? Your actions are the tell. Even the old adage, follow your heart, which I love, is not so much an appeal to one's emotion as it is to what one truly believes is right and true. In actual practice, the heart doesn't do most of the leading. It is typically more of a follower. It is the convictions of your mind that set the wheels of action in motion. It's what one thinks and believes that does the leading, and our hearts then follow. That is why, whether we like it or not, it's a far greater concern to God how we think and what we think and why we think the way we do than how we might be feeling at any point in time. The priority on the mind rather than the emotion is found throughout scripture. Time and time again, the Bible asserts that our minds are the key. But you may ask, don't feelings and emotions greatly influence how we think? Absolutely they do. And therein lies the problem. God is obviously not against emotions, revealing in scripture his own deep emotions and feelings. Furthermore, he's imbued us, his treasured and loved creations, with gobs of both. Emotions can be wonderful and transcendent, an indispensable and indelible part of being human. But the downside to our feelings and emotions is that they are often fleeting and fickle. They can also easily deceive, mislead, and distort. Here's a simple case and point from real life. If we have any poker players in the house this morning, do we? Any poker players? Okay. It's probably not, I was hoping to get a little bit more, better response. Have to move to Vegas. But if you do play, well, if we have any poker players in the house, you're probably familiar with the term tilt. If you do play and are not familiar with the term, then my guess is you probably lose a lot. Always leaving the table a bit mystified as to why you have such bad luck. Tilt is when emotion knocks a player off balance, disrupting and distorting his objectivity and ability to discern what's really happening. Tilt most commonly occurs when a player suffers, is unlucky due to a bad beat, a hand he should by rights have won but didn't, as it can spiral into frustration and subsequent decision-making infected by emotion. But tilt can also happen to a player on a winning streak, where strong positive emotions lead to equally poor and distorted decision-making. In both instances, emotional reasoning, patterns of thinking unduly influenced by how we are feeling at the moment, leads to bad outcomes. But unless you're trying to make a living playing poker, that example might not strike much fear in you. But I think it should. Feelings are always compelling, but they are wholly subjective and not always reliable. For example, I might be thinking I'm absolutely killing it up here this morning, really giving Nate a run for his money. But just because I feel that way doesn't make it so, does it? We live in an age of emotional reasoning. Way, way too much importance is placed on how we feel, elevating our feelings to such a degree that they can overwhelm the facts and distort reality. It's not been good for our mental health. It's not been good for our public discourse. It's not been good for our social cohesion. And it just so happens it's not good for our faith either. The powerful and often pernicious ability of our emotions to distort reality and overwhelm our thinking, to convince us something is true that is not, or to convince us something is not true that really is, presents a clear and present danger to the vitality of our faith. Imagine being in a story in which you think you know what's going on. All your senses are in touch with that story. Yet, in fact, there is a much bigger story and a different reality at work. Guess what? We're all in that bigger story. And the challenge is that our feelings and emotions aren't going to be of much help as they often point us the wrong way. As the writer and pastor Eugene Peterson most famously known for his popular paraphrase of the Bible called the message states, my feelings are important for many things but they tell me next to nothing about God or my relation to God. My security comes from who God is, not from how I feel. Discipleship is a decision to live by what I know about God, not by what I feel about him or myself or my neighbors. In other words, it's not so much the feelings we have about God, but the facts we know about God, what we are convinced of, that need to be right. Whether we know it or not, whether we acknowledge it or not, there is a raging battle going on for our minds, and the stakes couldn't be higher. The key to victory, in a nutshell, is to think right about the things that matter. Paul puts it this way in his letter to the Romans, do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is, his good, pleasing, and perfect will. This task of renewing our minds is made even more difficult because influenced by both our own sin as well as the fallen world in which we live, we all begin our journeys of faith with a constricted and impoverished view of what's possible, of what God wants and has in store for us. And this is Paul's overriding message in Ephesians, to convince us of the things that are actually and eternally true. Paul knows that we all need a radically new orientation in our thinking. Because only when we change the way we think do we change the way we live. And in Ephesians, Paul starts right up front. In the opening verse, offering a view of a reality that immediately confronts and calls into question my own. Addressing his readers as saints or holy ones. Those set apart by God. Paul is directly contradicting my feelings about myself. For I don't very often feel saint-like or holy or set apart. That's certainly not how I would describe myself. Yet Paul is asserting that it's true. I have been set apart by God for his purposes. That is who I am in Christ Jesus. In essence, Paul is conducting a master class in cognitive behavior therapy. Just like in modern CBT, Paul goes about combating our incorrect, distorted, and emotional thinking about ourselves, our world, and our faith by laying out the facts and the truth. And as in cognitive behavior therapy, the goal is that the process becomes a virtuous cycle of sorts, slowly but surely changing the way we understand and interpret things, which causes a change in how we respond emotionally, which in turn causes our thinking to change a little further. And so begins Paul's full frontal assault on our small and constrained views of ourselves and our world that constitute reality as we know it. Like rapid, sharp staccato bursts of machine gun fire, Paul rattles off a whole slew of facts that we are in fact part of a massively bigger and grander story, one that began long ago and will continue for all eternity, that we were chosen by God before the creation of the world, an act rooted in the eternal purposes of God, to have a people, holy and blameless, set apart for himself, something only made possible through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, and that now unites all believers as one, that although once dead, we are now alive, despite rightfully deserving the judgment of a just God, someone else has borne our guilt and suffered in our stead, And by and through that extravagant act of love, we have been declared not guilty. Once consumed, controlled, enslaved by our own sinful natures, the ways of this world, we've been set free and made new through faith in Jesus Christ. And that even now, all of God's spiritual blessings in Christ are available, active, and evident in believers' lives. These are the things Paul thinks we should know. This is who we truly are. We can't intuit them. We can't feel our way towards them. Our feelings and emotions offer little help in arriving at these transcendent and transformational truths. Only by repeatedly reflecting on these things, allowing them to seep into us, to question and challenge our existing patterns of thinking and emotional reasoning, will we ever be able to renew our minds. Paul is asking, he's cajoling, commanding, encouraging us to put on a completely new lens, a lens designed to color everything that we think about and all of our thinking. We are indeed part of a bigger and grander story. And as Paul writes in chapter 1, verse 10, this story will culminate when the times will have reached their fulfillment to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ. So, though the world may often seem chaotic, mystifying, and out of control, a time is coming and is advancing already when all will make sense under the lordship of Christ. In the meantime, believers in Jesus Christ have been given the gift of God's Holy Spirit as the first installment and guarantee of our salvation, a magnificent promise and blessing. However, this has led to a tendency for Christians to sometimes describe their conversion process as inviting Christ into their hearts, as if salvation entailed a mini-Jesus or a little bit of Jesus being in us. While that, in a sense, is true, it can lead to a misconception that downplays the extent to which all believers are united together in Christ and whose identities are found together in Christ. Far more common in Paul's writings and conceptually more powerful and accurate is the idea that believers are part of a larger reality of God. We are now in Christ, not the other way around. In fact, Ephesians describes two separate and completely distinct realms, that of Christ and that of the world, which are polar opposites diametrically opposed to utterly incompatible spheres of influence. To be in Christ means we are moving from one sphere of influence to another, from the realm of the world to the realm of is in them due to the former way of life to put off the old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires to be made new in the attitude of your minds and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Putting off the old self and putting on the new is the process which happens as we move from the world's sphere of influence to that of Christ, a migration to a new identity that will define us for all eternity. However, again, we're not going to move very far unless this increasingly becomes how we view and understand ourselves and our reality. Paul insists that we must engage our minds rather than our emotions. Again, it is only when we change the way we think that we change the way we live. That's when transformation happens. Now, personally, I've often observed in my own life that if I really believe what I said I believed, my life would look a lot different. The great majority of the time, I don't feel like I'm a new creation or that I put off my old self. Far from it. On the contrary, I still struggle with the things that I've struggled with all my life. This has been convicting and has made me feel like a giant hypocrite at times. However, if my mind, what I think and what I believe, is decisive in determining how I act, then all this disconnect really means is that I obviously have a long ways to go in changing my thinking and renewing my mind. I'm still very much a work in progress. Fortunately for me, and for all of us, one of the most consequential and vastly underappreciated blessings of having been given God's Holy Spirit is that the Spirit helps us to make this transition by helping us to better grasp these truths, by purging our minds of those influences which distort, deceive, and mislead. In other words, by helping us to renew our minds. God's spirit in us seeks to shape us by reminding and teaching us who we are now in Christ. Only when we more fully know and believe can we authentically move and change. But we need to do our part. We have a role to play. Again, just as in cognitive behavior therapy, we need to deliberately, intentionally expose our minds to the truths of God and ourselves. If we were to have any chance of changing our thinking. It's simply not going to happen otherwise. And this is why worship, prayer, study, community are so vital. Christians, including myself, often act like these activities are certainly good things to do, but essentially voluntary ones, more or less. That we have times and seasons in our lives when they can have less prominence, be less of a priority, perhaps because we're so busy. And other seasons when we can allocate more time to them and really get our spiritual mojo back. The Apostle Paul in his letter to the Ephesians does not share that view. Being a believer, being saved, to use a nice evangelical expression, being a follower of Christ, having our identity found in Christ, are all descriptions of the process of moving from one sphere of influence, the world, to a completely new sphere of influence in corresponding reality, Christ. that requires a radically new orientation in our thinking because only when we change the way we think do we change the way we live. And we can't depend on our feelings, emotions, and intuition to convince us of these things, for they often tell us something very different, which is why we're going to close by listening to Aaron sing a song from about a dozen years ago called Remind Me Who I Am. I personally find it so, so compelling because it captures my desperate need to be constantly reminded of the truth of who I am and who God is. I'd like to read a few of the lyrics. When I lose my way and I forget my name, remind me who I am. In the mirror all I see is who I don't want to be. Remind me who I am. In the loneliest places when I can't remember what grace is, tell me once again who I am to you, who I am to you. Tell me, lest I forget, who I am to you, that I belong to you. When my heart is like a stone and I'm running far from home, remind me who I am. When I can't receive your love, afraid I'll never be enough, remind me who I am. Tell me, once again, who I am to you, who I am to you. Tell me, lest I forget who I am to you, that I belong to you. Worship is how we are reminded. Spending time in scripture is how we are reminded. Getting down on our knees in prayer is how we are reminded. Being in community is how we are reminded. These ancient and timeless disciplines remain profoundly modern for when we worship together on Sunday mornings, when we open our Bibles, when we bow our heads, when we sit quietly alone in God's presence, when we spend time with others who share the same Savior and the same hope, we are working on and renewing our minds, implicitly acknowledging that we are part of a much grander story.

Who in today's culture, books, movies, TV, podcasts, or even real life would be considered a great detective, a master of deductive logic, one able to take the most cryptic clues, hints, and innuendo and figure out what's going on. I'm asking you all so as not to date myself and come across as a hopelessly out of touch boomer. So a little help, please. When you see me being trotted up here to speak on a Sunday morning, you do not have to be a Sherlock Holmes, a Detective Columbo, an Axel Foley, or an Ace Ventura to know that we must be deep, deep, deep into the lazy, languid days of summer. When I plot up here on stage, you have the legitimate right to ask yourself dang why am I not on vacation but be that as it may I am here and I'm excited to share when Nate first reached out to me way back in March he wrote that he we'd be in the middle of our summer series which we started last year called 27 that covers the books of the New Testament and specifically the letters of the Apostle Paul and he said I could pick whichever one I wanted and build a sermon around its overall message. Now typically when asked to preach I deliberate, I agonize, hem and haw wringing my hands over whether I really want to do it or not. But not this time. I was excited and quickly responded to Nate, saying that I would leap at the chance to do the book of Colossians, as it is magisterial and soaring and easily one of my favorite books in all of Scripture. I was pumped. However, just moments later, Nate wrote back, and I quote, Doug, thanks for taking me up on the offer, though I have bad news that I hope will not dissuade you from your acceptance. Aaron preached on Colossians last year, and I failed to mention that to you in my request email. Kyle has also preached on 1 and 2 Thessalonians, so those are off the market as well. So remembering that old saying, fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me, I went back to Nate, explicitly asking him to confirm in writing what books were actually able and available for me to pick. And thankfully for me, and hopefully for you, Paul's letter to the Ephesians was one of them. And that's the book we're going to look at this morning. This letter was written by the Apostle Paul, once among the fiercest and most formidable opponents of the early Christian church. But God, in his wisdom and grace, had chosen Paul, this fervent enemy of the church and most unlikely of all candidates, to be his chosen messenger in spreading the life-changing news of Jesus Christ throughout the known world. And for two to three years, they don't know exactly how long, the city of Ephesus had been base camp for Paul's ministry, for his missionary work, establishing churches throughout the region. Now, by AD 60, some 25 years after his miraculous conversion experience on the road to Damascus, Paul is thought to have written this letter from a prison in Rome. Now, for those familiar with this letter, it is chock full of beautiful and iconic passages. Nate frequently has brought to our attention the last half of chapter 3, which is his favorite prayer in all of Scripture and one he prays over grace often. Ephesians also contains the verses that would shape and fuel the Protestant Reformation 500 years ago. Ephesians 2, 8, and 9 asserting that salvation is only found through God's gracious gift of Jesus Christ and is by faith in him alone. In other words, there's nothing we can do to earn or curry God's favor. For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not fromesians, there are the frequently misunderstood, misappropriated, and sometimes even abused house codes, describing how the relationships between wives and husbands, children and parents, slaves and masters, are to work in light of the Lordship of Christ. Finally, in a very famous passage near the end of the letter, Paul exhorts all believers to put on the full armor of God. And there are more, but this morning, our focus will be on the one overarching theme of this entire letter, our identity as believers, who we truly are now that we are in Christ. According to Paul, everything in both the individual and collective Christian experience, hangs in the balance, directly dependent upon the extent to which we can wrap our minds around this one transcendent and surpassing reality. At this stage of my life, if you were to ask me why I believe what I believe, my most honest and transparent answer would go something like this. I believe because everything I've seen, everything I've learned, and everything I've experienced in my life so far has validated the truth of Scripture. Not just some things, but literally everything has reinforced what the Bible has been saying all along. And despite being such an ancient book, I've for the most part stopped being surprised when I again discover another way in which the Bible is fresh and profoundly modern, relevant, life-changing, and most importantly, true. Here's one quick example from my long-ago past. In 1966, Professors Daniel Katz and Robert Kahn at the University of Michigan published a groundbreaking work in the field of psychology and organizational behavior. By the time I started graduate business school up in Chicago in 1980, Katz and Kahn's cutting-edge theory, only about a dozen years old, had swept through academia and was now all the rage at the elite business schools. What this theory offered was a sweeping transformational alternative to classical business management that up to that point had viewed organizations as machines. Now what this new systems theory proposed was that organizations should best be viewed not as machines but as living organisms. When I first heard this I was floored, blown away. What insight, what brilliance, so outside the box. I'd never in my life heard anything like that before. Oh, wait. Yes, I had. The Apostle Paul had made that very same point when he compared the church and how its members were to operate to a human body in his first letter to the Corinthians, written around A.D. 55. Turns out the Bible had beaten Dr. Katsakan and Kotz to the punch by just over 19 centuries. Much more recently, I was again struck by Scripture's remarkable freshness and relevance, revealing truth and wisdom long before the rest of us even begin to catch up. The occasion was this past fall when I listened to the book, The Coddling of the American Mind. And it has direct relevance and application to what Paul is trying to do in his letter to the Ephesians. Written in 2018 by social psychologist Jonathan Haidt and First Amendment expert Greg Lukianoff, the book makes the case that our society and culture have gradually but steadily moved towards broad acceptance of three great untruths with terrible consequences, particularly for our young people. The three great untruths the authors cite are, one, always trust your feelings. Two, avoid pain and discomfort if you can. And three, life is a battle between good people on the one side and bad people on the other. Even if well intended, as they often are, the book asserts that these beliefs represent terrible and demonstrably false ideas whose adoption and embrace by large swaths of our society have contributed to an epidemic of anxiety and depression and overall decline in our mental health, to the intolerance and turmoil roiling our public discourse, and to the tearing apart of any semblance of social cohesion in this country, to name just a few of the disastrous consequences of these ideas, these patterns of thinking. The book went on to show how these flawed beliefs not only contradicted thousands of years of wisdom literature from a variety of traditions, but also fly in the face of the latest findings of science and modern psychology. That the Bible is prominent among wisdom literature debunking those three great untruths came as no surprise. What did come as a new revelation to me was when the authors introduced something I've never heard of, something called cognitive behavior therapy, or CBT, as an especially effective remedy and tool in combating these three great untruths. Why this is pertinent to Ephesians is that the Bible in its entirety, and the Apostle Paul in particular, espoused and practiced cognitive behavior therapy almost two millennia before it was even a thing. Some of you older folks, as well as any country music freaks out there, might remember the 1981 chart-topping duet by Barbara Mandrell and George Jones, I Was Country Before When Country Wasn't Cool. Does anybody remember that? Yeah, there we go. Well, tweaking that a little bit for my purposes this morning, it turns out that the Apostle Paul was doing cognitive behavior therapy before cognitive behavior therapy was cool. First pioneered in the 1960s, CBT is premised on the idea that how we think and what we think is what determines to a large degree both our emotions and our behavior. Rather than focusing on the origins of a problem as happens in traditional psychotherapy, cognitive behavior therapy works to change our current thinking. It is our incorrect, distorted, and emotional thinking about ourselves and our world, what cognitive behavior therapy refers to as cognitive distortions that must be addressed and changed. In clinical practice over the last several decades, this has been shown to be true as CBT has been proven to be remarkably effective. This task of renewing our minds is made even more difficult because influenced by both our own sin as well as the fallen world in which we live, we all begin our journeys of faith with a constricted and impoverished view of what's possible, of what God wants and has in store for us. And this is Paul's overriding message in Ephesians, to convince us of the things that are actually and eternally true. Paul knows that we all need a radically new orientation in our thinking. Because only when we change the way we think do we change the way we live. And in Ephesians, Paul starts right up front. In the opening verse, offering a view of a reality that immediately confronts and calls into question my own. Addressing his readers as saints or holy ones. Those set apart by God. Paul is directly contradicting my feelings about myself. For I don't very often feel saint-like or holy or set apart. That's certainly not how I would describe myself. Yet Paul is asserting that it's true. I have been set apart by God for his purposes. That is who I am in Christ Jesus. In essence, Paul is conducting a master class in cognitive behavior therapy. Just like in modern CBT, Paul goes about combating our incorrect, distorted, and emotional thinking about ourselves, our world, and our faith by laying out the facts and the truth. And as in cognitive behavior therapy, the goal is that the process becomes a virtuous cycle of sorts, slowly but surely changing the way we understand and interpret things, which causes a change in how we respond emotionally, which in turn causes our thinking to change a little further. And so begins Paul's full frontal assault on our small and constrained views of ourselves and our world that constitute reality as we know it. Like rapid, sharp staccato bursts of machine gun fire, Paul rattles off a whole slew of facts that we are in fact part of a massively bigger and grander story, one that began long ago and will continue for all eternity, that we were chosen by God before the creation of the world, an act rooted in the eternal purposes of God, to have a people, holy and blameless, set apart for himself, something only made possible through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, and that now unites all believers as one, that although once dead, we are now alive, despite rightfully deserving the judgment of a just God, someone else has borne our guilt and suffered in our stead, And by and through that extravagant act of love, we have been declared not guilty. Once consumed, controlled, enslaved by our own sinful natures, the ways of this world, we've been set free and made new through faith in Jesus Christ. And that even now, all of God's spiritual blessings in Christ are available, active, and evident in believers' lives. These are the things Paul thinks we should know. This is who we truly are. We can't intuit them. We can't feel our way towards them. Our feelings and emotions offer little help in arriving at these transcendent and transformational truths. Only by repeatedly reflecting on these things, allowing them to seep into us, to question and challenge our existing patterns of thinking and emotional reasoning, will we ever be able to renew our minds. Paul is asking, he's cajoling, commanding, encouraging us to put on a completely new lens, a lens designed to color everything that we think about and all of our thinking. We are indeed part of a bigger and grander story. And as Paul writes in chapter 1, verse 10, this story will culminate when the times will have reached their fulfillment to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ. So, though the world may often seem chaotic, mystifying, and out of control, a time is coming and is advancing already when all will make sense under the lordship of Christ. In the meantime, believers in Jesus Christ have been given the gift of God's Holy Spirit as the first installment and guarantee of our salvation, a magnificent promise and blessing. However, this has led to a tendency for Christians to sometimes describe their conversion process as inviting Christ into their hearts, as if salvation entailed a mini-Jesus or a little bit of Jesus being in us. While that, in a sense, is true, it can lead to a misconception that downplays the extent to which all believers are united together in Christ and whose identities are found together in Christ. Far more common in Paul's writings and conceptually more powerful and accurate is the idea that believers are part of a larger reality of God. We are now in Christ, not the other way around. In fact, Ephesians describes two separate and completely distinct realms, that of Christ and that of the world, which are polar opposites diametrically opposed to utterly incompatible spheres of influence. To be in Christ means we are moving from one sphere of influence to another, from the realm of the world to the realm of is in them due to the former way of life to put off the old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires to be made new in the attitude of your minds and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Putting off the old self and putting on the new is the process which happens as we move from the world's sphere of influence to that of Christ, a migration to a new identity that will define us for all eternity. However, again, we're not going to move very far unless this increasingly becomes how we view and understand ourselves and our reality. Paul insists that we must engage our minds rather than our emotions. Again, it is only when we change the way we think that we change the way we live. That's when transformation happens. Now, personally, I've often observed in my own life that if I really believe what I said I believed, my life would look a lot different. The great majority of the time, I don't feel like I'm a new creation or that I put off my old self. Far from it. On the contrary, I still struggle with the things that I've struggled with all my life. This has been convicting and has made me feel like a giant hypocrite at times. However, if my mind, what I think and what I believe, is decisive in determining how I act, then all this disconnect really means is that I obviously have a long ways to go in changing my thinking and renewing my mind. I'm still very much a work in progress. Fortunately for me, and for all of us, one of the most consequential and vastly underappreciated blessings of having been given God's Holy Spirit is that the Spirit helps us to make this transition by helping us to better grasp these truths, by purging our minds of those influences which distort, deceive, and mislead. In other words, by helping us to renew our minds. God's spirit in us seeks to shape us by reminding and teaching us who we are now in Christ. Only when we more fully know and believe can we authentically move and change. But we need to do our part. We have a role to play. Again, just as in cognitive behavior therapy, we need to deliberately, intentionally expose our minds to the truths of God and ourselves. If we were to have any chance of changing our thinking. It's simply not going to happen otherwise. And this is why worship, prayer, study, community are so vital. Christians, including myself, often act like these activities are certainly good things to do, but essentially voluntary ones, more or less. That we have times and seasons in our lives when they can have less prominence, be less of a priority, perhaps because we're so busy. And other seasons when we can allocate more time to them and really get our spiritual mojo back. The Apostle Paul in his letter to the Ephesians does not share that view. Being a believer, being saved, to use a nice evangelical expression, being a follower of Christ, having our identity found in Christ, are all descriptions of the process of moving from one sphere of influence, the world, to a completely new sphere of influence in corresponding reality, Christ. that requires a radically new orientation in our thinking because only when we change the way we think do we change the way we live. And we can't depend on our feelings, emotions, and intuition to convince us of these things, for they often tell us something very different, which is why we're going to close by listening to Aaron sing a song from about a dozen years ago called Remind Me Who I Am. I personally find it so, so compelling because it captures my desperate need to be constantly reminded of the truth of who I am and who God is. I'd like to read a few of the lyrics. When I lose my way and I forget my name, remind me who I am. In the mirror all I see is who I don't want to be. Remind me who I am. In the loneliest places when I can't remember what grace is, tell me once again who I am to you, who I am to you. Tell me, lest I forget, who I am to you, that I belong to you. When my heart is like a stone and I'm running far from home, remind me who I am. When I can't receive your love, afraid I'll never be enough, remind me who I am. Tell me, once again, who I am to you, who I am to you. Tell me, lest I forget who I am to you, that I belong to you. Worship is how we are reminded. Spending time in scripture is how we are reminded. Getting down on our knees in prayer is how we are reminded. Being in community is how we are reminded. These ancient and timeless disciplines remain profoundly modern for when we worship together on Sunday mornings, when we open our Bibles, when we bow our heads, when we sit quietly alone in God's presence, when we spend time with others who share the same Savior and the same hope, we are working on and renewing our minds, implicitly acknowledging that we are part of a much grander story.

This is the fourth part in our series called 27, where this summer and next summer we're going to do an overview of all 27 books in the New Testament. We've been spending June in the Gospels, and this week we arrive at John. John is my favorite Gospel, and in the mode of the other Gospels, if you've listened to all four sermons, you kind of know that each Gospel is written to a certain audience and depicts Jesus in a certain way. By way of review, Matthew was written to the Jews, and Jesus is depicted as the king. Mark was written to the Romans, and Jesus is depicted as a servant. Luke was written to the Greeks, and Jesus is depicted as a man. And the book of John was written to everyone, and Jesus is depicted as God. The book of John is different than the other books. It's written to all people for all time, not a specific audience, and it begins right off the bat talking about Jesus as God. John's gospel is different. In fact, it starts off different. It starts off with a resounding claim that feels far different than the other gospels. I love the way that John starts his gospel. It's one of the reasons it's my favorite gospel. Look with me in John chapter 1, verses 1 through 3. And I'm going to keep reading verses 4 and 5 because I read them again this morning and I'm like those are cool verses too. They need to hear them. So here, John chapter 1, this is how his gospel begins. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him not anything made that was made. Listen, in Him was life by John. Who at the very beginning, from the very beginning, places Jesus in the Godhead at creation. He says, in the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, the Word was God. Through Him all things were made. Without Him nothing was made. If you think back, this is why it's a big deal to call Him the Word of God, because if you think back to Genesis 1, and you think back to the creation account, how did God create things? He spoke them into being. God said, let there be light. And there was light. He said, let there be fish and birds and animals. And there was fish and birds and animals. He spoke them into being. It was God's very word that was the agent of creation. And here at the beginning of John, right off the bat, just boom, right in your face, John says Jesus is the word, the logos of God. He is the agent of creation. Through him all things were made. Without him nothing was made. He places Jesus in the moment of creation along with creator God the Father and God the Spirit that Genesis says is hovering over the surface of the deep. So right there we get the idea of the Trinity. B.B. Warfield, a theologian from either Yale or Princeton, I should have double checked, from the early 1900s, wrote a lot of things about the Gospels and a lot of different things about Jesus. But one of the things that he said is that the synoptics were written from below upward, and John was written from above downward. The synoptic Gospels are the first three Gospels, Matthew, Mark, and Luke. They follow the same chronology. They have a lot of the same stories. They have a lot of the same parables. Those are called the synoptic gospels. And they present Jesus from the bottom upward. Matthew and Luke begin with genealogies. Here is Jesus' genealogical tree. Here are the men and women from whom he descends, right? It starts at the bottom. And then they introduce him as a baby, helpless, lying in a manger. And if you know nothing else outside of these gospels, this is your first encounter with Christ. And you see him gradually. We learn that he is God and that he is divine and that he is the son of God and that he is the Messiah. We build Jesus from the bottom upward. But in John's gospel, in John's gospel, we see Jesus from the top downward. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and then we see him show up at baptism. Then we see him human. Then we see him as fully God and fully man. But John's gospel is unique and differentiates itself from the rest of the gospels. If I were going to stay in the mode of the series that we've done so far, every week I kind of look at how Jesus is depicted and why he's depicted that way, and then we kind of pick it apart and see why that's important to us. Why is it important to us that Jesus needed to be displayed as king, or that Jesus is a servant, or that Jesus is man, and we kind of look at that. And so if I were going to follow that mode, I would take this week and I would say, why is it important that we understand that Jesus is God? How do we pull that theme out and how does that apply to us? But to me, and it doesn't mean I don't respect the other gospels, but to me, I love the gospel of John so much and there's's so much good stuff in there, that I found that to be overly reductive and dismissive of the message of John. So I didn't want to do that. And I thought about all the things about John that I love that make it unique, and eventually what we'll do is we'll land on this single unifying principle that comes out of the gospel of John that I think is one of the most profound, powerful, freeing principles in all the Bible. We might spend our entire spring on this one principle. But as we get there, I wanted to share with you what I love about the book of John, what I think makes it unique, because I'll tell you right now, the whole goal of this sermon, the only thing I want you to do is leave here and read the book of John. That's my goal. It's for you to walk out those doors or those doors thinking tomorrow or this afternoon, I'm going to crack open the book of John and I'm going to read it. And I'll tell you, I started reading it again too. And I read chapter one this morning. And if you can read chapter one and not want to read the rest of it, then I can't help you. Chapter one is a great chapter of the Bible when you're locked in and you're paying attention to what's going on. So my whole goal is to have you leave wanting to know Jesus through the book of John and wanting to read the book of John. What I think is unique about John, and it's not just me, I mean, you can find lists online. But the things that matter to me are, first of all, John is written from the perspective of a loving friend. Now Matthew and Luke, they knew Jesus. John Mark knew Jesus through Peter and Paul, but John knew Jesus. John was a loving friend. He was a close friend. And in your life, if someone was going to write the story of your life, who better to write it than a close and intimate lifelong friend, than someone who's known you and walk with you for years? Someone who's seen you, who's seen your vices and your values, who's watched you lose it, who knows what frustrates you, who knows what brings you joy, who knows how to complete your sentences, who knows what makes you happy, who's been with you in the down times and laughed with you and cried with you and mourned with you and wept with you? What about, who else can have a perspective on you like that of a good friend? And we say that John was Jesus' good friend because it kind of drips off the pages. First of all, in John's gospel, he refers to himself as the disciple whom Jesus loved. Now that, that is a bold claim. To write your gospel knowing the other gospel writers like they're around, they're going to see this and he still puts it out there that he is the disciple whom Jesus loved. So it would almost be like writing a letter, writing a book about your parents and calling yourself the child whom my parents loved. Like it's a bold claim. And in my case, everybody would just be like, yeah, that's true. It's legit. But he calls himself the disciple whom Jesus loved. And you can see that their relationship was unique amongst him and the disciples. At the last supper, they're reclining together and the way that they would eat dinner, you would lean on your side and you would reach to the table that way and so they were kind of front to back and John's head was in Jesus' chest at one point because he was asking, who is it, Jesus, that's going to betray you? And Jesus whispers into John's ear, it's the one who's going to dip the bread next. He whispers into John's ear who it was going to be, that it was going to be Judas. It's this intimate moment that only John records. And John records a lot of intimate moments like this. As a matter of fact, at the cross, we see that John may have been the only disciple that even bothered to show up. And Jesus musters up the energy and the oxygen to push himself up on the nails and tell John, when I die, please take care of my mother. He entrusted Mary to John. That was how close and intimate they were. So John's gospel is written from the perspective of a loving friend three decades later as he reminisces on the sweetest years of his life when he walked with his Savior. And so John just writes down different things than the other gospel writers did. John almost writes down a personal memoir of Christ where we get insights into these amazing conversations. We get insights into miracles that we don't see in other places like the miracle of the wedding at Cana. We get the longest recorded prayer of Jesus. We get long teachings of Jesus that we don't see in the other books. Matthew and Luke have the Sermon on the Mount or the Sermon by the Lake, whichever setting you want to take. But John has teachings and conversations that we see nowhere else. I actually have some there in your notes for you so you can use this as reference later when you're going through John. But in John chapter 3, we see him have this amazing conversation with Nicodemus that the other gospel writers don't record. Nicodemus was a Pharisee. And the Pharisees rejected Jesus and who he was. But I've always respected Nicodemus because Nicodemus had a way to see past the fake news and the tide and the current and the way that everything else was running in culture and say, wait, but what do I think and who is this man? And so he seems to have requested a conversation with Jesus. And they meet under cover of night and Jesus lays out everything for Nicodemus, who he is, what he came to do, and how we can be, in our words, saved. And in this discourse with Nicodemus, we see the most famous verse in the world, John 3.16, for God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. It's the salvation message, it's the gospel, it's the whole point of the Bible wrapped into this one succinct verse. It's in the conversation with Nicodemus that that verse appears. One chapter over in John chapter 4, Jesus has this incredible conversation with the woman at the well, this Samaritan woman where he breaks cultural norms, he goes past hated divides, and he talks with a woman who comes to the well in the middle of the day because she's so ashamed of her life that she doesn't want to be seen by the other women. And Jesus calls her out, says, you've had five husbands. The guy you're living with now is not your husband. That's not good for you. I don't want you to keep doing that, but I love you. I'm the living water. Drink of me and you will never perish. And she goes back to her village or her town and she tells everybody, there's a dude at the well that just told me everything I ever did and you guys need to come check him out. And the whole town goes out there, they meet Jesus and they have faith in him. We don't see that story in the other gospels. And then I referenced it earlier in John chapter 17 we have the lengthiest prayer recorded of Jesus. Now the most famous prayer of Jesus is the Lord's prayer. When he teaches the disciples how to pray, our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. That prayer. And then we have accounts of the prayer in Gethsemane, right before he's arrested to be crucified, where he says, Father, please take this cup from me. Please don't make me do this. But in John chapter 17, we have Jesus's most lengthy recorded prayer. It's an insight into his heart and his desires into his conversations with his father. And scholars refer to it as the high priestly prayer. And in that prayer, it's so remarkable because he starts off by praying for the disciples. And then after he prays for the disciples, he prays for all of those who would follow the disciples. He prays for the church down through the generations. Do you realize that in John chapter 17, if you're a Christian, if you're a part of God's church, if you call God your father and Jesus your savior, and to be a Christian means that you believe that Jesus is who he says he is. You believe that he did what he said he did. And you believe he's going to do what he says he's going to do. If you are a Christian, then in John chapter 17, Jesus prays for you. It's right there in the red letters. And I can't get over the fact that tucked away in this corner of the Bible, in the 17th chapter of John, that my Savior prayed for me and he prayed for you. And it's recorded and we get to read it. We don't see that in the other gospels. That kind of intimacy is not there. We see it in the gospel of John. And just as an aside, do you know what Jesus prays for? For his disciples and for the generations of the church to come? What would you pray for in that moment? Faithfulness? Power and efficacy of mission? The growth of the church? The fidelity of the saints. Jesus, in that moment, the most important thing on his mind was to pray for unity. Unity within the church. Unity within his children. Unity within the descendants of God. So when I read that passage, I feel equal parts inspired and encouraged that my Jesus prayed for me. But there's also a tinge of sadness there for me. Because I think we can admit and confess we're doing a pretty bad job of making our Savior proud of our unity. We, the church, we've let our Jesus down with all of our denominations and all of our differing beliefs. And it's not that we can't have variant beliefs, it's just that we insist on ours to the exclusion of others. And you fire up Twitter and it's just Christians calling other Christians bad Christians and you fire up Facebook and now it's Christians who know each other calling Christians bad Christians. And it's all just gross. And it's not the point of the sermon, but grace, let us not be a part of that evil. Let us not be a part of God's children that further the divide amongst His church and amongst His children. Let us honor the prayer of Christ and seek unity with one another, understanding we're not going to agree on everything and that never really seems to be a priority of Jesus'. But we see those lengthy discourses in the Gospel of John. Another thing that makes John unique amongst the Gospels, as I mentioned earlier, Matthew, Mark, and Luke include the teachings of, and Jesus always very intentionally taught through parables. We know these parables, the parable of the prodigal son, of the lost coin, the shrewd manager, the persistent widow. We could go on and on. We know the parables of Jesus. Even if you're not very familiar with the Bible, even if this is your first Sunday in a church in over a decade, you could probably name and loosely describe a parable because they're just kind of ubiquitous in our Christian culture. In the book of John, you won't find any parables. I don't know why, but for some reason, John didn't feel like he needed to record those. Maybe he had access to the gospels written prior to his and was like, they got those squared away. I don't have anything to add to the parables. Or maybe he thought it was more captivating to describe Jesus in the terms and to follow the teachings of Jesus in the way that Jesus described himself. Because in the book of John, Jesus teaches using I am statements rather than parables. If you read through the book of John, you'll find seven huge I am statements where Jesus tells us who he is. He's not reliant on the descriptions of gospel writers. He's not reliant on the descriptions of historians or other people or word of mouth. He tells us straight up who he is and what he is and how we ought to think of him. And the seven I am's are there in your notes if you have them. They're not going to be on the screen, but Jesus says, I'm the bread of life, I'm the light of the world, I'm the gate for the sheep, I'm the good shepherd, I'm the resurrection and the life, the way, the truth, and the life, and I am the true vine. And if you look at those for a second and you study them, what you'll see is that all of those things are referring to salvation and they're referring to life in him. I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father but through me. I am the light of the world. I am the bread of life. Come to me. Believe in me. I am the Savior. I am the Messiah. And then once you get to me, I am the shepherd at the gate. I am the good shepherd. I am the true vine. I am the bread. I will sustain you. Jesus beckons you. Come to me, believe in me, know me, and then be sustained by me. All through the gospel of John, these are the I am statements where Jesus invites us to come and to know who he is and then to find life in him. And then in the book of John, we get these verses that I love so much. I tell you guys every week, this is my new favorite verse, and whatever, but I love these verses in John. I love the way that John opens, that we read at the beginning. In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, the Word was God. Through him all things were made. Without him nothing was made. That is profound. Elevates Jesus to exactly who he is. Later on in that same chapter we get John 1 16 which is one of the verses I like to repeat around here that humbles me every time, fills me with joy every time. It's a simple verse. From his fullness we have all received grace grace. At grace, we say that we are conduits of grace because we are connected to God. And from his fullness, we have received grace upon grace. We can give grace upon grace to other people. From his fullness, from God's goodness, we, all of us, have received grace upon grace. I pointed out John 3, 16, the most famous verse in the Bible. I also think of John 10, 10, one of my favorite verses for a long time. The thief comes to steal and to kill and to destroy, but I have come that you might have life and have it to the full. Where Jesus says, I'm going to give you the best, most exciting, richest, fullest life possible. Well, he promises you, I know, I know the world tempts you with things that you think you want to run after. With wealth or power or success or men or women or attraction or friendship or whatever it is. I know that the world tempts you with things that you want to run after. But I promise that I will give you life to the full. When we pursue Jesus, when we trust our life to him, when we spend our life pursuing him, his promise on that pursuit is not that we will have given up some sort of richness of life to pursue him in this life and experience eternity later. No. It's that if you pursue him now, he will give you that richness now. You cannot imagine a better life for yourself than Jesus would give you if you would only follow him. That's his promise. I come to give you life to the full. I could do a sermon on every one of the things I've said so far. Because there's so many good, so much good stuff in the gospel of John. But my favorite one, the verse that I love so much, the verse that I want to land on that feels to me like a unifying principle for all of Christendom, is found in John chapter 15. After he said that he is the true vine, he tells them this. I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. I am the vine, you are the branches. If you abide in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit. Now here's why I love that verse. And here's why I think it is so profound. Because Jesus says, you don't need to worry about anything but abiding in me. You can sweep all the other concerns of life aside and focus on me. Pursue me. Follow me. Make me the apple of your eye. Stay attached to me and you will bear much fruit. And here's what I really love about that promise. One of my biggest fears in life, I think we all carry this fear to different degrees. One of my biggest fears in life is to get to the end of my life and to learn that I've wasted it. Is to have to settle into the harsh reality that my years didn't matter very much. That I could have done more or I could have done better. I first heard this quote from D.L. Moody. I've researched it out. I don't know to whom to attribute it because it wasn't his, but I heard it from him. He said that one of the most tragic things in life is to watch a man spend his entire life climbing the ladder of success only to get to the top and realized it was propped against the wrong building. It is profoundly sad for people to spend their life in pursuit of things that don't matter. And I carry a fear of that with me. And this verse, this principle safeguards you from that fruit. Over in first, I think it's first Peter or 1 Peter, it says that if we can learn to love one another, that it will keep us from being ineffective and unproductive in our knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. There are these promises through Scripture that if we'll pursue God and do what he has for us to do, that we will not waste our life, that we will bear much fruit. The question becomes, I think naturally, what that fruit is and what it looks like. What does it mean to bear fruit? And I think we probably think about that in ministerial terms. We think about that at Grace. We say that we want to be kingdom builders. We actually say we want to be kingdom builders so much that my goal for you, if this is your first Sunday here and you're here for 10 years, I hope that moves you through this process in life where you realize that everything that you have been given, every talent, all your time, all your treasure has been given so that you can leverage it for the growth of the kingdom of God. That's what we want for you, to leverage everything in your life to bear fruit and grow God's kingdom. So what does it mean to bear fruit? Well, I think we think about that ministerially, making disciples and converting people to Christianity, evangelism, discipleship and evangelism. We think about those things. We call it strengthening or adding to God's kingdom. And I think that's absolutely true. That is the way that we bear much fruit. And if we abide in Christ, we can't help but bear that fruit. That's another part that I love. If a branch is attached to an apple tree, then when it's time, that branch is going to grow apples. All it has to do is stay attached to the tree. It doesn't have to worry about what kind of fruit to bear or when to bear it or what to do or how to get the nutrients. All it has to do, stay attached to the tree and you're going to bear fruit. All we have to do if we stay attached to Jesus is we're going to bear fruit. That's it. That's all we have to worry about. But I got to thinking about what kind of fruit we bear. And if you just look at the natural world, there's all different kinds of fruit. Apples, oranges, pears, tangerines, lemons. That's about all I know. I don't eat a lot of fruit. I can tell you a lot of fast food menus. But throughout the natural world, trees grow fruit. They grow all different kinds of fruit. An apple tree doesn't decide, you know what we're feeling this year, boys? Oranges. Let's do it. That doesn't happen. Apple trees grow apples. That's it. For the rest of their days, apples. I don't think that God's kingdom and that this natural world is that much different. I tell you all the time, Ephesians 2.10, you are God's workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works that you might walk in them. I think that's the same ethos that we find in Proverbs when it says that we should train up a child in the way that they must go and they will not depart from it. We're going to train up that child to be quiet in church. That's great. We love you, Faith and Phil. But in that, in that is this tip of the cap to the idea that we're all different. In Corinthians, we see that there are a myriad spiritual gifts, and not everybody has all of them. We all have our different parts to play. We all have our different giftedness. God knew before you were that age when you were going to live, what you were going to do, and what gifts he was going to imbue you with so that you might be used in his kingdom. He already knew that. And I've told you before that because you're a God's workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works that you might walk in them, that your job is to figure out what your good works are and then walk in them. All of that ties in with abide in Christ and you will bear much fruit. I don't think the ministerial fruit looks the same for everybody. I think it is as wild and variant as the natural world and that what abiding in Christ and bearing fruit means is you will bear the fruit that God designed you and intended you to bear. If it comes out of your creativity, your hospitality, your gift of care, your gift of discernment, your gift of boldness, your gift of timidity, your gift of confidence, your gift of charisma, whatever it is, God has gifted you in different ways and he has gifted you to bear your fruit in his kingdom, in his way, in his ministry. So it doesn't look the same for everybody. And so what Jesus is promising is if you abide in me, listen, if you abide in me, then you will become the exact person I created you to be. You will experience the exact full life I want you to experience, and you will produce the exact fruit I designed and created you in your mother's womb to produce. You will be the absolute best version of yourself on this side of eternity, and all you have to do is abide in Christ. All you have to do is pursue him, is walk with him, yearn for him, know him, love him. And we could talk a long time about what it means to abide in Christ. Right now I'm leaning towards making the spring series that leads into Easter. Just call it Abide. And every week talk about what it means to abide in Christ. If you're a note taker, I should have brought it up here with me, but write this down. There's a book called Abide in Christ by a guy named Andrew Murray. I would highly recommend it. I tell a story about the facilities manager at the summer camp I worked at, a guy named Harry Stevenson. And now he's one of the godliest men I've ever met in my life. He has those eyes that when you look at him, you know immediately he loves Jesus and he loves me. Just an incredibly godly man. Harry, when I asked him, I said, what book do I need to read, Harry? And he told me, Abide in Christ, Andrew Murray. And I've read it and reread it. If you're a reader, go read it. If you're not a reader, grow up and go get it. The book of John beckons us to know Jesus that we might find life in him. The whole book of John through the I am statements, through the claims of Christ, through the conversations, through the prayer, through the examples beckons us to come to know Jesus. Look again at the I Am statements. Jesus himself beckons us, come to know me, come to trust me that you might find life in me, that you might find the best life possible in me. The book of John beckons us to know Christ, that we would find life in him. It beckons us to abide in Christ. And I would just close by saying this as I push you back into reading the book of John on your own. We can only abide in Christ if we can know Him. And we can best know Him through John. And that's said with a caveat. There's other ways to know Christ. We experience Him. We pray with Him. We walk with Him. We see Him in the Gospels for sure. But I think if you want what is the best written account to know the person of Jesus, to see His heart and to see Him exposed and to understand Him, then the Gospel of John is absolutely essential reading for knowing our Christ and abiding in Him and bearing much fruit in your life and in your ministry. So I'm going to pray. We're going to sing a song. And I hope you'll walk out those doors and open up the book of John soon and begin a fresh pursuit of Christ. Let's pray. God, we love you so much. We thank you for your son. We thank you for John's account of him. That we can know him intimately through John's gospel. We thank you for all the powerful teachings that we find in there, for the way that your son loves, for the simple admonition to abide in him and let you handle the rest. God, we want to be who you created us to be. We want to do what you intended us to do. Would you give us the clarity of sight, the strength of faith, and the boldness of courage to walk with you? Would you let us shake off the demons and walk past our past and leave the shadows behind and pursue you with vigor and fullness of heart and openness of mind and eyes that we might know you and experience what it is to walk with you. It's in your son's name we ask these things. Amen.
