I wonder, pals, how long's it been since we heard those stories? I bet it's been a while. And if we could tell them again, I wonder if we would find out that those stories aren't really kids' stories at all, but they were meant for grown-ups all along, and that there's still lessons we can learn from them today. Let's find out together. Speedy delivery. For me? Thanks mailman Kyle. Today, Jonah and the Whale. Well, good morning, Grace Raleigh. My name is Erin, or as I have affectionately somehow been now dubbed, Girl Erin. So I am so glad to be here this morning. I am excited to see these beautiful faces. And so thanks for joining us, whether here or online, or maybe later this week. We appreciate your time. So thanks for being here. I feel like I kind of need to start out our morning with a small confession. And that confession is, I'm a bit of a history nerd. And I'm in love with the Old Testament. And I know there's lots of you in here that are looking at me going, but the New Testament, Aaron, is where it's at. And you know what? Yes, it's the gospel. You know, we get to see all of the creation of the church and then the beautiful letters that show the church how to act and how to behave and how to love each other. And it's great. And I love that part too. But to me, the Old Testament, it just has me. It's got a special, special place in my heart. The 39 books that make up the Old Testament do a spectacular job of showing us the history of God and his people. And it shows us all about Jesus. It continues to point us in his direction. And then it just does a really cool job also of showing us how much God really kind of cares about us and thinks that we're special and our everyday lives mean something. So hear me out on this one because it really is like it's the cool place to be. It's full of really cool heroes that you guys have been seeing, some of them. And I know our world today has all kinds of great heroes too. We got a little Captain America over here. Maybe there's Thor. I think there's a new Thor movie out. There's also some Iron Man. I seem to be stuck a little bit in Marvel for DC folks. I'm sorry. But it's all the heroes. We have sports heroes. We have all these places that we could put and look to to put our faith maybe. But the Old Testament gives us really, really cool heroes too. And what I think makes them the coolest is the fact that they're big old mess-ups just like you and me. And so we have this place to land. The Old Testament tells us the good, the bad, the ugly. There's no filter put on these guys. You know, Instagram has that beautiful filter where everybody looks perfect and pretty and all of the other things. You're going to find in the Old Testament those heroes aren't filtered. They come to us raw and in their natural glory. We have Adam who was God's first creation, the man, but we find out later that Adam is a bit of a blame shifter who lacks some self-control. And then we also have Noah who was considered the last righteous man on earth and yet the minute that the ark landed Noah was over served and ended up falling asleep in his birthday suit and thus embarrassing his sons greatly. And then there's Jacob. We've learned all about Jacob in the past. Jacob from the very beginning was a manipulator. But you know what? Jacob's other name is Israel. So we think he's this big spectacular hero, which he was. But he also has his flaws. He convinced his brother to give him his birth, just like we are. And yet God chooses to use them in pretty spectacular ways. And I want to introduce you to another one of the heroes, I personally think is a hero, of the Old Testament. And his name is Jonah. And you're going to see as we talk about Jonah that Jonah was a little bit headstrong. And Jonah liked to do things his way. And that because of all this, Jonah gets to sit in some pretty stinky circumstances for a little while. But I've gotten ahead of myself. So let me introduce you, first of all, to Jonah before we jump into Jonah's story. You will find the book of Jonah in the back part of the Old Testament sandwiched in between Obadiah and Micah. And if you happen to have a Bible that has sticky pages, which mine can sometimes, you'll miss it because it's four short little chapters long. That's it. And it's back there waiting for us to dig into it. Jonah was a prophet. All that means is Jonah was God's mouthpiece. It was easy and simple. God gave instruction to Jonah. Jonah, in turn, then gave instruction to his people. And that was his job. He lived in a small little village outside of Nazareth. It was called Gas Heifer. Just to give you a little information, that's what it was called. It was called Gas Heifer. It's also speculated that he lived during the time of the Assyrian Empire's reign. And at this point in time, the Assyrian Empire was to the north and west or east, whichever. I'm directionally challenged, y'all. I'm so sorry. But it was up here to where he was down here. How about that? Does that work? And so he's, and this empire liked to try to take over all of the territory surrounding it, which included the lands where the Israelites lived. So unfortunately, or whatever, the Assyrian army was a huge enemy of the Israelite people. That becomes important later, so hold on to that one. The other thing to know about the Assyrians as people is they weren't nice. They were classified as idolatrous. They were proud. They were ruthless. They were bent on world conquest. They were known very specifically for their brutality and torture when it came to how they fought, as well as once they conquered an area, they were then known for their intimidation and fear factors that they used in order to hold these people in their control. So just the kind of people you would want to have as your neighbor. Just saying. Okay, so hold on to all that because, again, that information we'll come back to. So now let me introduce you to the book of Jonah. I did not prepare slides. So you have nothing to look at. I'm so sorry. But you do have your Bibles in front of you. So if you want to pull out and look at Jonah, again, it's towards the back of the Old Testament, you can kind of follow along there. We pick up in chapter one, verse 1, and it starts out and states that the word of the Lord came to Jonah, the son of Amittai, saying, arise, go to Nineveh, the great city, and call out against it, for the evil has come up before us. Well, that sounds pretty simple, right? God's doing exactly what it is. He's giving instruction to his prophet, and he's telling his prophet to go talk to people, but the thing is that he's not saying go talk to the Israelites. He's telling Jonah, I want you to get up, and I want you to go, and I want you to go talk to the Ninevites. Any idea where Nineveh is? Ah, Nineveh sits right in the Assyrian Empire. Right in the middle, y'all. So here it is as God's telling him, I want you to get up and I want you to go over here to our mortal enemies and I want you to tell them that they're in trouble. So Jonah, being the good prophet he is, decides to get up, and he decides to go, right? Well, unfortunately, his compass is about as directionally challenged as I am, and Jonah did get up and go, and if you look in verse 3, it says, but, oh, that word in the Bible is never a good thing. But Jonah rose and fled to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa. He found a ship going to Tarshish. So he paid the fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord. So here it is. Jonah is just like all the other people that we've talked about. He's not the perfect little hero that we kind of would hope he is because he gets up and he goes in the direction that he wants to go, not in the direction that God has asked him to go. No, he has chosen, and y'all, this one makes me laugh a little. If he wanted to go from where he was in Joppa to Nineveh where God asked him to go, it's about 500 miles, which is about like going from Raleigh to Buffalo, New York. And instead, though, Jonah has said, no, no, no, no, I'm not going to do that. I'm going my way. And his way, though, is to go 2,500 miles in the opposite direction. And 2,500 miles is like going from Raleigh to Los Angeles. So not only is he fleeing, he's fleeing really hard, really fast, and completely in the opposite direction. And why is he doing this? All because it says here he's fleeing the presence of the Lord. So how many times is it that we've done that? How many times is it that we've had some sort of call from God to go and do something, and we've chosen to go our way or to the opposite way? Be honest. What in here is your Nineveh? Everybody has a Nineveh. Everybody has some place that you're avoiding. For whatever reason it is. Maybe it's that it's just too hard to even think about. Maybe that it's a little too dangerous. Or maybe it's going to require a little too much sacrifice on your part. And it's just so much easier to do it your way, even if, like in Jonah's case, it's a whole lot farther in a different direction. Maybe it's a relationship that you're supposed to be mending. Maybe it's something to do with your job. I don't know what your Nineveh is, but you do. So what is it? And I know also you guys are thinking, well, I might have my Nineveh, but I definitely don't run from God. I would never do that. Well, I tell you what. How about if I give you a couple of things to think about to see if you possibly are running from God. What does it look like for you to run from his presence? Are you avoiding those places where he shows up? What does your church attendance look like? Are you avoiding being here on a Sunday morning because you don't want to listen to these worship songs because it may hit someplace? Or you definitely don't want to hear something that Nate may have to say because it's going to convict you and then you're going to have something to do because of it. What does your activity inside of Bible study or small group look like? Are you part of one? If you're not part of one, why? And if you are part of one, are you actively engaged? Are you participating? Or are you trying to stay away from where God may show up? And the last one is, what does your daily time with God look like? Are you spending time with him each day? Do you sit? Do you reflect? Do you pray? Do you allow him to speak to you? Or do you just continue to run? Because, you know, Scripture tells us he's not going to leave us. He's not going to forsake us. But it's us that turns and runs. Thankfully, though, when he sees us on the run, quite often he does something to stop us and move us back into his direction. He tries to fix our compass a little bit. And I don't know about y'all, but I can be stubborn. As my family agrees, I can be stubborn. I can be hard-headed and sometimes I just don't listen very well. So the way that God has to move me, unfortunately, can become a two-by-four situation, like right here between the eyes that says, hey, Aaron, wake up. But then there's others. Maybe y'all are lucky and his still small whisper is what will get you where you need to go. I don't know. But in Jonah's case, we find out that God does a pretty big work to get his attention. So Jonah has moved and he's now on this boat and this boat is heading 2,500 miles away to Tarshish. And all of a sudden, God says, it's time for you to come home. And he sends a mighty wind off to the sea, which creates what they call a tempest. So basically, y'all, this is a big storm unlike anything we would have ever seen before. And this poor little boat is out in the middle of it, rocking and shaking and probably being pushed really, really hard at the seams. The crew that's on this boat knows. They're sailors. They're seasoned sailors. They know that this is not any normal storm. They're trying to figure out how not to sink. So they start picking stuff up and throwing it overboard. Like, I got to get rid of this so that we don't go down in this storm. And all the while, the captain's like, oh, wait a second. We had somebody on board with us. Has anybody seen Jonah? The captain goes looking for Jonah. He goes, y'all, Jonah is down in the hull of the ship, sound asleep. Of all things, it's rocking and rolling and the wind is blowing and it's probably raining and the whole works. And I don't know about you, but I might have been a little seasick at that moment. But Jonah's taking himself a little nap. And the captain looks at him and says, hey, you need to wake up. And you need to start praying that we don't all perish in the middle of this storm. And I hate to say it, but Jonah doesn't pray at this moment. But he does get up, and he does go up onto the deck. And somewhere when the captain was looking for him, the rest of the crew is just trying to figure out exactly what has caused this supernatural storm that's around there. And so they do something called casting lots and it all comes to a point that it's Jonah is the problem. So when Jonah appears up back onto deck, these crew members look at him and they literally start throwing all kinds of questions at him about as fast as you can hear them come out of their mouths. Tell us on whose account this evil has come upon us. What is your occupation and where do you come from and what is your country and of what people are you? And then Jonah in turn responds, I am a Hebrew and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven who made the sea and the dry land. And right there, Jonah just told them everything that they needed to know about what was happening to him and why it was happening. He's a Hebrew, and he worships the one true God, the one true God who made the sea that they're sitting on that's now in this huge storm. And so they know it's Jonah's fault. And so they look at Jonah and say, what do we need to do in order to fix this? Because you're our problem. And Jonah just looks at him and he very calmly says, just throw me overboard. Okay. The crew members have probably got this going in their head though. Like the, the guy, God's already angry. He's already got this sea all churned up. And so if we pitch this guy overboard, don't we think he's going to be even more mad at us because we've just now killed this guy? And so instead of doing what Jonah said, they proceed to row as hard as they possibly can row because they're going to get him up on shore and kick him off and their problem is going to be solved. Well, the faster they row, the angrier the sea gets. And so finally they stop. But before they pitch Jonah overboard, these men stop and they pray. They don't pray to their idols or to their gods. They pray to Jonah's God. And they say, hey, Lord, we're going to do what he told us to do. And we're going to throw him overboard. And please don't let his blood be on our hands. Mind you, Jonah has still not prayed. But these pagans are praying to his God. And so they then pick up Jonah and they throw Jonah overboard and the seas stop. Whew. That was a whole lot in 12 verses. So I'm going to stop for just a second. I'm going to back us up and I want to look at something really fast. We've got our little rebellious prophet who has defied God. He's boarded his ship and I can only imagine what's going on in his head when he boarded the ship was I had a conversation with God. He told me to go to Nineveh. Nobody knows about that but me and God. And so it really doesn't matter that I'm going to get on this ship and I'm going the other way because nobody's for the wiser. It's just between me and God. But what do we see? This is that Noah's disobedience brought calamity to that ship and to all that were part of it. So ultimately what he shows us in this moment is that our obedience and our disobedience affects so many more people than we could ever begin to imagine. There are very, very few instances where our choices only affect us. Our choices echo through generations. A great example of these choices is, let's say, I'm the kids pastor, so I can use this as an example. But let's say you choose to volunteer inside of kids ministry or inside of Kyle's student ministry. You've made a choice to do it. In a lot of instances, it's not like you're getting a bunch for this choice. In most instances, there's a whole lot more sacrifice that happens on your part because you're giving up a Sunday to be hanging out with kids or a Sunday night on your couch to hang out with students. You get to laugh at all the 12-year-old humor, which, y'all, that's the best part right there. You get to answer crazy questions and weird texts and all of the above. But somewhere in there, that time that you spend with these kids or with these students is impacting that generation, which in turn will impact the next generation and the next and the next. You may never see the fruits from all those seeds that you planted, but I promise you heaven does. And there is a party happening because of your yes. And the same thing, though, goes with our disobedience. Let's say you've got that relationship that you know darn well you need to do something about. It's broken, and it needs some reconciliation. But by choosing the easy way and saying no, what have you told that other person? Maybe you've kind of told them that they're not lovable or that when the going gets hard, you're going to pack up and go the other way. What about your kids, your big kids, little kids, any of the above that are watching this. You know, this may be communicating to them too that it's really okay to give up on a friendship. It's really okay to hold a grudge. That forgiveness is not always the way to go. And maybe you have somebody else that's watching this in the background. Maybe it's a neighbor. And all of a sudden, by you choosing the easy way, it all of a sudden validates to them that Christianity is kind of a farce and that somehow most Christians are hypocrites. Our disobedience or our obedience affects so many more people than just us. So let's jump back into where Jonah is. We know Jonah is now overboard, but we also know that God is not done with Jonah. So God sends Jonah his little saving grace, which happens to be a rather large fish that swallows him up. And a bit of a side note, we don't know if this is a fish, a shark, a whale, or some creature that lives six miles down at the bottom of the ocean that we've never seen before. We have no idea. Scripture just calls it a big fish. So I'm going to call it a big fish. It just works that way. And Jonah is given now three days and three nights to sit in his circumstances and the consequences of his actions. And I don't know about y'all, but when I was little and I used to get in trouble, quite often my mama would look at me and say, hey, Aaron, and she used to call me Aaron Beth when I was in trouble. She's like, Aaron Beth, you need to go sit over there and think about what you've done, and then we're going to talk about it. Well, this is exactly what God is doing for Jonah. Hey, Jonah, you've messed up, and I'm going to give you some time to think about it and then we're going to talk about it. So that's what Jonah gets, three days and three nights in the belly of a very stinky fish. And while he's in there, Jonah does sit, Jonah does think, and then Jonah does what we hoped he would have done in chapter 1, and he prays. And all of chapter 2 is Jonah's prayer from his repentant heart as he pours out to God. And so I'm just going to pull out verse 2. I'm not going to give you the whole prayer. You guys can read it. But verse 2 says, I called out to the what that just says to me is that even after we've messed up and even after we're totally disobedient, God still hears our prayers. He still hears us. He still wants that relationship with us. Jesus is currently seated at the right hand of God, waiting to intercede for us, waiting to be able to say, hey, I'm going to give you a second chance or a third or a twelfth or a twentieth, whatever it is that you may need. He wants to give that to us because he longs to be in relationship with us and he longs to take the messes that are our lives and turn them into something very, very beautiful for his purposes. And that's exactly what he does for Jonah. After Jonah pours out his heart to him, God says, okay, it's time. And the fish deposits him on dry land. And again, some of the other reasons I love the Old Testament is it doesn't mince words. And my version says that he vomited Jonah onto dry land. So just add to the stinkiness, okay? So then we come to chapter 3, verse 1, and this is just so amazing because it says straight up, the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time. Again, he loves us, wants a relationship, and he's going to give us second chances. He doesn't need us to accomplish his goals. God, at this point in time, y'all, he could have taken care of Nineveh all on his own. He didn't need Jonah, but he wanted Jonah to join in, and that's exactly what He wants from us. And the next part, if you look down into the second verse, it says, Arrive and go to Nineveh, the great city, and call out against in the message that I tell you. I think this is so amazing too because guess what? Not only is he a God of second chances, but he's also not going to let Jonah off the hook though because he's now telling him to do exactly what he told him to do back in chapter 1. Arise and go to Nineveh. You don't get to, you spent all that time and you were repentant. But you're still going to do what I need you to do. I need you to get up and I need you to go. And so this time, thankfully, Jonah gets up and Jonah goes. And he goes to Nineveh. But the really cool part or the hard part or whatever you want to say here is that Jonah has 500 miles to go. Jonah has some hard work that he needs to do. And that is this hard work of obedience. Because I can guarantee you in this five mile walk, or 500 mile walk that Jonah is about to take, he's going to do a whole lot of thinking. Because here he goes, stepping, hey God, like, I'm doing what you're asking me to do. I'm making this journey. I'm going. But what about like Amos and Hosea who were two other prophets at the same time as Jonah? You know, they're over there talking to the Israelites. Why can't I be over there like them? No, Jonah, keep walking. Jonah keeps walking. Okay, well, could you just send me a friend then so I don't have to do this by myself? No, no, Jonah, keep putting that foot in front of the other. And that's exactly what Jonah does in this act of obedience. And is it easy? No, it's not easy because guess what? Obedience doesn't come with a convenience clause. God doesn't make it easy because God wants you to have to rely on him with each step that you take. So like that broken relationship that we talked about, it may mean that to do the hard work of obedience is that you have to be the first person that puts out a hand and says, can we talk? Is it easier the other way? Of course it is. It's so much easier the other way. Because guess what? The other way is our way. And all we're trying to do is run the other way. He doesn't need our excuses. He just wants our obedience. The other thing to remember about Jonah at this point in time is he's probably a bit of a sight to see. There are actually two recorded versions of men who have been swallowed by a whale and later lived to tell the tale. And these men emerged hairless and covered in yellow and green splotches. And I imagine they smelled really good also. So now I'll get a picture of Jonah also in his 500-mile walk. We don't know if he bathed or not. We have no idea on that one. But he's also walking 500 miles, so we know he probably doesn't smell very good. We also know that he looks really, really strange. This is what he does. This is how he looks as he walks into the city of Nineveh. I'm here. And all that's going through his head at that point in time is like, really? Lord, are you sure about this? These people are going to run the opposite direction. I look pretty scary, and oh, I don't smell very good. And God's like, no, no, no, keep going, keep going. So Jonah keeps going, and he starts crying out, yet 40 days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown. And he goes another step and yells again. And all I can think about is at this moment, the Lord is loving the position that he has Jonah in because he loves to put us in these challenging positions where he gets to be who he is. Jonah thinks it's impossible. Jonah thinks these people are not going to respond. There's no way this is going to come out for any kind of good. And God says, oh, but watch this. And in chapter 3, verse 5, it says, and the people of Nineveh believed God. And then verse 10 says, God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, and he did not overthrow them. So here's this one little guy who walks in smelling, and he's full of sores, etc. And yet because he did the work of obedience, these people believed God, and they turned from God. It was an unprecedented response because remember Ninevites are horrible people by nature and yet they turned to the one living God. It was a revival beyond all revivals. And I think it would just be fabulous if we could end right here. We're done. Let's have the baptism. We can call it a day. But the thing is, is if you remember correctly, I told you there's four chapters to the book of Jonah. And we just got to the end of chapter three. Because the fourth chapter does so much to show us Jonah's humanity in full color and full display. And, yeah, hear what happens. Because the beginning of chapter 4, verse 1 says, but, there's that word again, but it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he was angry. Come on, y'all. Seriously? Greatest revival ever, and Jonah is now mad because it happened. Why? Why would you be mad at something like that? I think what it really comes down to is Jonah is mad because God didn't do it his way. You see, back then the Israelites all believed that God's blessing and God's favor was for them and them alone. And it wasn't to be shared with others. But yet God said, oh, no, no. These Ninevites are part of my plan. And I need them to be taken care of. And so Jonah's mad. That's why Jonah's mad. But can I ask how many times we've done something like that. Where we've had our plan for ourselves. I am going to, and you know, you've just got it all written down. You know where your life's going. You know what your plan looks like. It's all great and good. And then you walk up to God and go, would you please just, will you sign off on this for me? Give it a good stamp of approval. Because it's my way, right? That's the way I want it to go. But we cannot. We cannot do that to God. We can't do that to ourselves because ultimately what happens is we're putting God in this box. And we're saying that your way, my way, has to be your way. That's not how he works. His ways are not our ways. His thoughts are not our thoughts. He knows what he wants to do. And we should be just getting out of his way instead. And so I don't know. You know, he's very good at what it is that he does. And I am so not sure why we choose not to trust him and what his plan is for us. And I kind of sat and thought about this. And the thing that I kind of came up with is I think that we're more concerned about ourselves than we are with actually showing others who God is. We don't believe that anything that we do, that the choices that we make, actually affect anybody around us. It's kind of an all about me. And I also think that, again, in that all about me, we don't want to be inconvenienced by having to do some hard work of obedience. But I'm so very thankful that God, in all of our ugly humanness, still chooses to use us. And in this case, we know he used Jonah in a mighty way. Chapter 4, unfortunately, does not tie up Jonah's story in a big red bow. We don't know if Jonah ever even got over himself. And I'm sorry. I like a good ending. This one's not a good ending, and I'm sorry about that. But that's just the way that it is. But I think that the lessons that Jonah brings to us before this ending are ones that we can hold on to for a really, really long time. God wants desperately to be in a relationship with us, but he doesn't need us. He wants us. He wants to use us to accomplish his goals. But the thing is, being the gentleman that he is, he's going to ask. And we, in turn, have to respond. We have to be willing to surrender to him. We have to be willing to do the hard work that he's going to ask of us. And when we choose to do that, we, in turn, bring glory to him. And again, maybe a little growth to ourselves. In the beginning of the book The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, there's an exchange between two characters, two of the main characters, Gandalf, who's kind of a kindly old wizarding folk, and then Bilbo Baggins, who is the hobbit. And the exchange starts like this. Gandalf says, I'm looking for someone to share an adventure that I'm actually in the process of arranging, and it's very difficult to find anyone. And Bilbo's response to him is, well, I should think so in these parts. We are plain, quiet folk, and we have no use for adventure. Nasty, disturbing, uncomfortable things make you late for dinner. So my question for y'all is, the next time God says to you, I'm looking for someone to share an adventure, or I'm looking for someone to step out to do something for me, are you going to be like Bilbo, and are you going to avoid it at all costs? Because it's uncomfortable. Because it doesn't quite fit in with your plans. Because you just might have to sacrifice something. And maybe something a little bit more than dinner. Or will you be willing to say yes, knowing that your yes is for God's glory and for your growth? And will you all pray with me? Lord, thank you. Thank you, thank you for these examples in the Old Testament, these human characters that give us such a beautiful picture of the fact that no matter how messed up we really are, you can use us. And we ask that as we go through this week that you give us what it is that we need to turn towards you to begin that beautiful walk of obedience, no matter how hard it might be, no matter how uncomfortable it makes us. Give us what we need to do that. And Lord, we love you. And it's in your name we pray. Amen.

I'll tell you what else makes me feel nostalgic. It's those old Bible stories, the ones that we learned in Sunday school or maybe just picked them up somewhere along the way. I love the heroes, David and Goliath, Noah and the ark, Jonah and the whale. The list really does go on and on. And I wonder, pals, how long's it been since we heard those stories? I bet it's been a while. And if we could tell them again, I wonder if we would find out that those stories aren't really kids stories at all, but they were meant for grown-ups all along and that there's still lessons we can learn from them today. Let's find out together. Speedy delivery. For me? Thanks, Mailman Kyle. Good morning, everyone. If you missed on the video, my name is Mailman Kyle. I am the student pastor here at Grace. Before we get going, I just wanted to make you all aware. I had COVID about a month or so ago, and I have a cough that has not yet subsided. So you see a lot of things on this table. I've got tea, I've got water, I've got loose cough drops, all of the things that I need. But there may be a time where we run into me coughing a little bit, and I promise you that as annoying as it is for you, it's at least as annoying for me. So let's just get through it together. But I am so excited this morning to finally be kicking off our summer series, Kid Stories for Grownups, where we take these stories that we've heard and been told so many times if we grew up in the church. And if you're parents, you've probably either read or more honestly, you've probably recited all of these stories to your kids over and over and over again. These stories that we know back and forth. And we take a look inside of those stories and we dive deep into them and are reminded that, hey, like, certainly these are awesome stories for kids, but these stories are incredibly rich and they're incredibly deep and they're incredibly beneficial to us as grownups and as adults as well. And maybe as we go through these stories, we highlight something that maybe isn't the thing that jumps out of the page, that maybe, hey, I've always taught this story and read this story and taken this from this, but maybe there's something more or something deeper we can take away. And this morning, as Nate so beautifully told us, we're talking about Jesus walking on water. And I know a lot of us probably know this story. This story comes on the back of Jesus feeding the 5,000. Jesus has come to earth. He has left heaven and he's come to earth. He has begun his ministry. He has gone and he's found his disciples and they have walked together in ministry, serving people, teaching, preaching, doing all those things. Well, he comes to this crowd, and as he's preaching to them, he realizes, hey, these people are hungry. They've been here all day. We've got to feed them. And so what happens? They have five pieces of bread, two pieces of fish, and Jesus breaks those apart until literally every member of the 5,000 plus the wives and children are fed with food to spare. An unbelievable, incredible, awesome miracle into this second unbelievable, incredible, awesome miracle of Jesus walking on water. After he was done ministering, he sends the crowds away, and he sends his disciples on a boat. So the disciples head out, and Jesus goes up on a mountain, and he prays. He spends time recharging and refocusing. He spends time with his father. He spends time praying. Well, as the disciples are on the boat, winds are crazy, weather's crazy, the water's up and down, all of those things, and they're a bit scared and they're a bit afraid. Well, their fear then suddenly increases by tenfold because then a man starts walking towards them in the like middle of the morning, like 3 a.m. Here comes this man walking up and starting to talk to them. So they get terrified. Literally their response is, is this a ghost? Are we seeing a ghost right now? What is going on? And Jesus's response to that is wherever it is in my, oh, looks like my, I turned the page. I'm very sorry about that. His response is, take heart, it is I. Do not be afraid. And we look at that and we're like, that is unbelievable. That is incredible. This is literally Jesus walking on the water. An unbelievable miracle, back-to-back miracles to say, look at this. This man, who is definitely a man, is definitely not just a man. This is clearly the Son of God because no one else, no other human would be able to do such a thing. And we look at that and we tell and we learned about that story as a kid and we're like, wow, look at what Jesus is able to do and look at what he was able to do when he was on earth. But that story continues. And I think if we cut the story short by simply talking about Jesus walking on water, then we miss some of the meaning and we miss some of the gold that we can find if we keep going. And so I want to start off by reading the rest of the story. We're going to be in Matthew 14 and reading 28 through 33. It says, But when he saw the wind, he was afraid. And beginning to sink, he cried out, Lord, save me. Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, O you of little faith, why do you doubt? And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, truly, you are the Son of God. Not only does Jesus walk on water, but so does Peter. Once again, an unbelievable, incredible miracle of what happens when the power of Christ says come. But then Peter falls in. As the wind is going crazy, as he looks and he sees the crazy seas, he gets a bit blinded to the power of Christ. He begins to doubt, hey, I don't think I can be doing this, and he falls in. And Jesus comes and grabs him. And to help us draw a bit more from this story, I think that the best and the easiest way is to connect to another story that a lot of us grew up listening to. A lot of us grew up learning, and a lot of us have taught our kids as well, and that is later in the Gospels, in the Gospel of John, with another disciple, Thomas. When I mention Thomas, a lot of us in our minds immediately think of one characteristic of Thomas. Thomas is a disciple. He's mentioned plenty in Scripture. He's mentioned plenty in the Bible. There are times where he shows absolutely incredible courage and incredible faith throughout the Gospels and throughout Scripture, but that's not the characteristic that we're thinking of. Those of us who grew up in church, or those of us who have begun coming to church and reading the Bibles for ourselves, we know Thomas by a nickname. What's that nickname? Doubting Thomas. We know him by Doubting Thomas because when Jesus hung on the cross, when Jesus died and was resurrected, Thomas didn't immediately believe. This man that Thomas had followed for years, had absolutely love, had complete and utter faith in, had gone up and he had watched him be killed and die. And in his sorrow, he isolates himself and just sits and wallows and is so overwhelmed in sorrow because he's like, this guy that I believed in, maybe he actually wasn't who I thought he was. And so the beginning of this story with Thomas comes when a lot of the disciples were together. And when they were together, Jesus, after he had been resurrected, after he had come back from the dead, had gone and visited those disciples. And the disciples, obviously, absolutely threw the roof, crazy excited that Christ actually was who he said he was. He actually had been resurrected. He is alive again once more. They go and they tell Thomas, Thomas, he's back. He's back. He did what he said he was going to do. He's here. He's living. But Thomas, so overcome and overwhelmed with his grief and with his sorrow, just can't bring himself to believe. And so he responds to them, unless I see him, unless I see and I feel the holes in his hands where the nails went, unless I'm able to see that and to see him, then I'll never believe. And so that is where we pick up and we read John 20, 26 through 29. Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas this time was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus answered him, my Lord and my God. Jesus said to him, have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have yet believed. Here we have the story of two disciples of Jesus, two of Jesus' closest friends, these two people who Jesus had been preparing them for the whole time that they were together to fully have faith and believe and trust in what Jesus has to say. I am with you. I will not leave you. I am in complete control of what is going on here. Yet in both circumstances, we find two disciples wrestling with doubt that puts them in places of turmoil. We've got Thomas flailing about in the water and in the winds, yelling and asking Jesus to come and to save him. You've got Thomas sitting isolated, crippled by sorrow, and crippled by the doubt that maybe Jesus isn't the guy I thought he was. But that's not the only connection of the two stories. Because what drives those two connections home is the way that Jesus responds and the way that Jesus reacts to that sorrow, to that fear, and ultimately to the doubt that both of them experienced. And he responds by going to them. He responds by literally putting his hand out, giving them his hand. Peter reaching down, reaching his hand down, pulling him up, putting him in the boat, and calming the winds. Thomas, he shows up, he offers his hands, he says, look, put your fingers here. See me, believe that I am who I said that I am. He reminds them that he is in complete control. He reminds them that he never went anywhere. He was always with them, and all they had to do was believe, and all they had to do was have faith. I love these stories, and they remind me of this commercial that I've seen. I've seen it a few times, but I couldn't find it on the internet. So I think that it was a commercial about adoption and just how great parenthood or fatherhood is or whatever. One of those. And in the commercial, it starts off, it's this kid who's kind of running around the house and it's pretty frantic. Like he's running, he's like, dad, dad, dad. Like where you can see where he's like, dad, dad. and then like it just kind of elevates to frantic of he's running around, and he's worried, and he's looking around, and he's trying to figure out where his dad is because he can't find him in the house. And as his calling turns to be a bit more frantic and a bit more fearful, then his dad comes out from a hiding spot, gives him a hug, and basically the response is, hey, we're just playing hide and seek. I promised you I was never gone. Hey, I was here the whole time. I would never actually leave you. There is absolutely no reason to fear. And I think it connects pretty well to maybe both sides of both Peter and Thomas' doubt, right? That at the slightest amount of doubt, his fear took over. The kid's circumstances were such that he couldn't find his dad, and his fear took over, and he forgot about the fact that if he would have sat back and thought, he'd be like, oh yeah, dad would never leave the house and leave me. But his circumstances were bigger than that and he began to fear. Or at its deepest, he did think about it. And at his deepest, he went around and as he's looking and he can't find his dad, he goes, maybe he would leave me. I can't find him. I can't see him right now. I can't feel where he's at. So maybe he's not who he said he was. But ultimately, the point and the purpose of the video and the point and the purpose of the commercial is not to rest on why is this kid doubting that his dad would be there. Ultimately, the point and the purpose of the commercial is seeing the dad's response to the kid getting afraid. And that is to show up and to say, hey, I'm right here, and I never left. I've always been here, and as soon as the kid needed to seek out, and as soon as in his worry and in his frantic energy goes, dad, where are you? His dad instantly came to his side, put him in his arms, and said, buddy, I'm right here. I was never anywhere else. And I think that's what we see with how Jesus responds to Peter and with how Jesus responds to Thomas. In their doubts and in their worry and their sorrow, their fear, and all of it, Jesus literally seeks them out. He offers his hand, not simply to save them, but more importantly to restore their faith that he never wasn't there. He never wasn't with them. He never wasn't for them. He's always going to be who he said he was. And I believe that these two passages are a lot deeper in that way than simply focusing on the miracles. Certainly, walking on water is a miracle that is unbelievable. And it's like, yes, this must be the Son of God. This is incredibly important to see that this man is no simple man. He is literally walking on liquid. That's unbelievable. Or on the other end, far more importantly, this is a man who came not only to live, but also to die. And when he dies, he brings our sin with him. And ultimately, we get to see and realize, just like Thomas and just like all of the rest of them, that he is raised back to life. That as we believe and have faith in that, then we too do not live our final chapter by death on earth, but we just begin eternity. Both of those things are incredibly important, but at the same time, I think both of these passages are meant to encourage us, those of us in our lives who have experienced doubt, to help restore our faith and to help remind us that Jesus is exactly who he said he is. I don't think it's too presumptuous for me to say that we've probably experienced doubts similar to Peter and doubts similar to Thomas. Like Peter, there may be times where our circumstances feel heavier than the peace and the assurance that Jesus offers. I know that Jesus is bigger. I know that Jesus is better. But right now, everything is so big and everything feels so hard and so scary that it just makes me just forget. And so I begin to doubt just for a second that Christ is who he says he is, and he is in control. Or maybe like Thomas, there may be times where we wrestle with doubt or struggle to believe that Jesus really is everything that he says he is. I think many of us have felt this way about Christ. There are times where our circumstances overshadow the goodness of God and we simply fail to believe or even remember that Christ truly is in control. And for that reason, we have passages like this. We get to see that even Jesus' best friends dealt with doubt, and we get to be reminded of how Jesus responds to us in our doubt as well. I love the way that William Barclay puts it in his commentary about Jesus and Peter walking on water. When he says, in life, the wind is often contrary. There are times when we are up against it, and life is a desperate struggle with ourselves, with our circumstances, with our temptations, with our sorrows, and with our decisions. At such a time, no one needs struggle alone, for Jesus comes to us across the storms of life with hands stretched but Jesus, through the Holy Spirit, still reaches his hand out to us in our times of fear, doubt, and everything in between. And if you're like me, there's times where we kind of wish it would be reversed, right? There's times where I'm just like, Jesus, if you would just for once physically grab me and pull me out of my storms so I would know that you're here. Jesus, if you could just one time come and show me those scars that you showed Thomas so I could feel them and I could know for certain that you are still here and that you are still alive. But Jesus pushes back on that fully. In John 16, he basically tells the disciples, it is better for you that I leave, that at some point I'm going to go, at some point I'm going back to heaven, and it is better for you that I leave, because when I leave, there is a helper that is coming, that I am sending the Holy Spirit, And he assures us that the most intimate connection that we could ever have with Christ on this side of heaven comes only through the Holy Spirit, not through his physical presence, not through his hands, not through seeing his hands or foreshadowing that one day it's coming that I'm not going to be here at all. But I'm going to send the Holy Spirit. And the Holy Spirit, while he's not offering a physical hand to pull you and a physical hand to say, I'm right here. It's going to be okay. I have control. I am still exactly who you believe I am. But he instead offers us Christ's heart. And when we seek after his heart, we find his heart, which is far deeper and far greater than simply his hand. Maybe the best way I've heard that put is by an author, Dane Ortlund, in a book called Gentle and Lowly that I've had the opportunity to read with my small group and read also with the staff. It's just a perfect and beautiful quote that reminds us and tells us, hey, when we have the Holy Spirit, we have the full living and active heart of Christ inside of us. The quote's a bit lengthy, but we're going to read it together. It's going to be on the screen, and so as I go to read, would you please just read along with me? You don't have to read it out loud, but just read along as I read. The Spirit makes the heart of Christ real to us. Not just heard, but seen. Not just seen, but felt. Not just felt, but enjoyed. The Spirit takes what we read in the Bible and believe on paper about Jesus's heart and moves it from theory to reality, from doctrine to experience, from knowing to believing. It is one thing as a child to be told your father loves you. You believe him. You take him at his word. But it is another thing, unutterably more real, to be swept up in his embrace, to feel the warmth, to hear his beating heart within his chest, to instantly know the protective grip of his arms. It's one thing to hear he loves you. It's another thing to feel his love. This is the glorious work of the Spirit. When we fear, when we experience sorrow, when we get overwhelmed, there are times where that can lead to doubts. Where is Christ and why isn't he here? Or can Christ actually be real if this is what's going on in the world, in my life? In those times, all that Christ asks of us is to seek after him. In the same way that that boy sought after his dad, and the second he did, his dad was there simply to give him a hug and remind him, hey, I've been here the whole time. You were never alone, and you were never in danger. There show his heart to us, and we allow him to remind us that why would we ever doubt because he is exactly who he says he is. So that we may believe. So that our faith may grow. So that our faith may exceed where it currently is and we may not doubt again. The end of both stories. You see worship and praise. Surely you are the Son of God. Praise be to you, the Son of God. Christ gets on them a little bit. Why would you doubt me? But ultimately, he gets on them after coming and showing himself to them and saying, I'm going to be here. When you doubt me, I will be here to remind you and prove to you that I am exactly who I say I am, that my heart is still for you, and that I still love you with all of my heart. And when I show up, I want that to increase not only your joy and not only your worship of me, but your faith in me. When you look at the kid's perspective in that hide-and-seek commercial, if that was real life, I imagine if they're playing hide-and-seek again, he's a little bit less fearful if it takes him a minute to see where his dad is. Because he knows. He's experienced it. He's experienced his dad show up and say, I'm right here. You are never in danger. And in the same way, maybe the next time we experience certain circumstances that are overwhelming or bring us to fear or bring us to sorrow, then maybe we wouldn't doubt. But when we do, because we know Jesus has showed up before, then maybe we would pray the prayer of Mark 9, 24. It says, I believe, Lord Jesus, help my unbelief, knowing full well that he's right there with us and he's ready to offer us his hand. Let's pray. Lord, we love you so much. Lord, I wish that in our life of faith that there would never be a moment or never be a time where we would doubt you, doubt your goodness, doubt your heart, doubt anything about you. But Lord, I also know that we live in a fallen world and there are times where it gets hard to trust in what you say. It gets hard to believe in you. And so Lord, in those times, may we as your children turn to you and seek after you and allow you to remind us of your heart and remind us that you are perfect and exactly who you say that you are. And Lord, as we seek after you and as we find you, as you wrap us in your arms, may our faith grow ever stronger through our experiencing you. We love you so much. Amen.

All right, well, once again, good morning. It's good to see everybody. This morning in the sermon, my goal really, more than to get you to feel or to convict you or to challenge you or encourage you, is simply to get you to think. So the goal this morning is that we leave here thinking, and I would tip the cap a little bit and say, in depth about our faith and the reasons behind our faith. And so I would begin with this question. You have it there in your notes in front of you. Why are you a Christian? Now, I understand that there are some people in the room who you wouldn't yet call yourself a Christian. You're here because you're exploring or you're considering or you're curious. And to that end, I am so grateful that you trust this place to help you on your path to answer some of those questions. That really, really is very honoring and humbling. And we hope that we hold that well. If you ever want to talk about beliefs that you may or may not have or things that you're considering in a nonjudgmental way, I would love to do that with you. I promise I'm open to whatever your thoughts are. If you are a Christian, however, I would ask, why is that the case? If we could sit down and have coffee together or beer, whatever you prefer, not wine though, that's gross. If we could sit down and we could talk to each other and I could say, why is it that you're a believer? What's the reason for your faith? How would you answer me? I feel like that answer is very, very important for reasons that we're going to explore as we get into the text. And my goal is for you to leave here considering that and hopefully to arrive at an answer to that question that feels substantive, that feels good. And I want to tell you why I feel like that question is such an important one. It's important for many reasons, not the least of which is that it comes up in 1 Peter chapter 4. Peter writes about this question. He poses it to the people who received the letter. And I know that we took a break this last week, and then we missed, or two weeks ago for Mother's Day, and then we missed last week, and so now we jump in the middle of the letters to Peter, and we might have forgotten the context and some of the things going on. So, so that we're all on the same page, and we can appreciate the importance of Peter weaving this into his letter, I wanted to just remind us that Peter was the disciple that I feel like I can relate to. He was the ready, fire, aim disciple, right? He was the one that would always speak first and think later about the things that he just said. He was always sticking his foot in his mouth. He was always the one that was going out first. He was the one jumping in the water. He was the one who would answer Jesus's hard questions. And sometimes he was right. And sometimes he was, he was spectacularly right. And he was honored for that. And other times he was spectacularly wrong and he felt shame for that. And I can relate to Peter a lot. And his letter gives me hope that even dummies like me might be able to grow up one day and be remotely wise. And so in Peter's old age, in his measured, weathered wisdom, he writes two letters to the churches in Asia Minor, which we know pretty much is modern day Turkey, with the intent of them being circulated around the churches. And these are churches that have people in them who are not of a Jewish background, but largely of a Gentile background, meaning they are first-generation believers. They are just coming into this faith. And to them, he writes the same encouragement, the same question that I posed to you just a few minutes ago, why is it that you are a Christian? He phrases it in a different way, but it leads to the same question. This is what he writes in 1 Peter 3. Sorry, I misspoke earlier. Verses 14 through 16. So Peter encourages the early church in the first century, be prepared with an answer when anyone asks for the reason of the hope that you cling to. Now, what is the hope that they cling to? Where does their hope rest? Well, their hope rests in the same place that our hope rests, and our hope rests in the promises of Christ. The hope that we have as Christians, what we hope for in the future, rests in the promises and in the actions and in the victories of Jesus. The hope that we have as Christians is the same hope that they had as Christians, that Jesus really did live, that he really did die on a cross in Jerusalem, that he really was buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea, and that Easter really is true, that he really did raise himself from the dead after three days, and in doing so, conquered sin and death for the rest of time. And then as he went back up into heaven, before he did, he made promises. He made promises that he was going to prepare a place for us. He made promises that he was going to return again to retrieve his bride, the church, to retrieve his brothers and sisters, the children of God the Father. He made promises to us that he's going to come back and get us. That one day, and I say this a lot, he made promises to us that one day all the wrong things would be made right and the sad things would be untrue. Those are the promises that we cling to, the promises of Jesus. Just this week, I was on the phone with a lady who had just lost her dad moments earlier. And she was crying, and it was hard. And those are, it's this really weird juxtaposition, my favorite and least favorite conversations that I have in my role, because what an honor it is to be there as people endure that sort of pain, and to be the one that they call to talk to. I never carry that lightly. But the hope that she clings to is because her father was a believer and professed a faith, and she's a believer and professes a faith, that when she said goodbye to her dad, it wasn't goodbye forever. It was goodbye for now. That's the hope that we cling to because Jesus promised us that. The hope we cling to is one day we'll be at the marriage supper of the Lamb, that one day we'll be in heaven in eternity, that we will see our Jesus face to face. That's the hope that we cling to. It's the same hope that the early church clung to. That's where we are similar to the audience that Peter wrote to in the first century. Here's where we're dissimilar, but in some ways kind of close still. In the first century, everyone was a first generation believer. Maybe, maybe, maybe there was a second generation believer, meaning they were the first ones in their family to come to faith. There could have been some children in the services where this were read whose parents were believers and they were therefore believers. But I could say with almost certainty, there were no adults receiving this letter the first time it was read in the very first edition, maybe a couple hundred years later, but there was no adults receiving this freshly whose parents were believers and who bestowed it upon them. That is highly, highly unlikely. So we have a bunch of first generation believers. And we have a bunch of first generation believers in a culture and in a context where this Christian religion seems like some weird fringe cultish thing. Why would you be a part of that? Why would you do that? Why would you be one of those crazy people where you have to eat the flesh of the Savior? That's so freaking weird. Why would you want to have anything to do with it? To be a Christian in the first century was to choose to be ostracized and to be put on the fringes of society. And so when you would declare publicly that you were a Christian, it was pretty normal to be met with, why? What for? And Peter tells them, when they ask you why, be prepared with an answer. Be ready. Have a why. Another way of thinking about that why is it that you are a believer is to say, what is your why? So Peter says, know what your why is. Know how to respond when people ask why you have faith. And then he says this, and this is so, so important. He says, yet do it with gentleness and respect. Do it with gentleness and respect. This is not the point of the sermon, okay? But I guess I'm getting to the age where I just feel like it's all right to climb on top of my soapbox every now and again when a chord struck with me. Christians in the public forum, on social media, commenting on Facebook, posting on Twitter, maybe on Instagram, I don't know. When you talk with your friends, when you get beers with the fellows, when you talk with the ladies, whatever it is, if our speech is not marked in contentious situations with gentleness and respect, then we dishonor the Savior that gave us the opportunity to use those words. If our speech in the public forum with people who disagree with us, not just about faith, but about anything, especially politics. If our speech isn't marked with respect and with gentleness, then our speech, no matter what our words are, is not Christian. It must be marked with gentleness and respect. That is the mark of the believer, and that is what will have our words heard. And I think the admonition of Peter here to be prepared with an answer for why you believe what you believe and gentleness and respect is every bit as applicable now in our lives and in our public forums. Our speech, when we answer why we think what we think, why we believe what we believe, because listen, the question doesn't always come up, why do you believe what you believe? Why do you believe, people aren't gonna come up to you and go, why do you cling to the hope that you have in Jesus? That's not how that question comes in. It's why do you believe this about this? Why did you vote this way about this thing? Why do you go to church on Sunday? Why do you prioritize this in your family? You tithe? What for? That's crazy. That's how those questions look in real life. And when we answer those questions, they go back to why, because we have a faith. Why do we have a faith? Well, that's your why. And then it's incumbent upon us to offer those answers with gentleness and respect. Now, here's the difference in our context now in the 21st century and the first century. In the first century, Christianity was this fringe religion that nobody had ever heard of. And if you believed in it, you were probably cultish and crazy. But now, particularly in the Southern United States, which Raleigh like barely counts. I'm from Georgia. Raleigh's kind of Southern. It's not super Southern. We still got some work to do. But in the Southern United States, that's not the case at all. Christianity isn't a fringe religion, it's the religion. It's the assumed one. Everybody knows who Jesus is. Everybody knows what church is. Everybody knows why it exists. Everybody's heard the story of Jesus. If you went man on the street interview, if you just went to Triangle or to Crabtree and just started grabbing people and saying, hey, what do you think about Jesus? You would be hard pressed to find somebody who would go, who? Do you mean Jesus? They would all know who you were talking about to a man and to a woman. If you were to say to them, do you go to church? If they said no and you said why, they'd have a reason. In our context, it's important to understand that if people in our culture are not Christians, they have a reason for that. As we seek to share our faith, as we seek to invite people to church, as we seek to build God's kingdom in Raleigh, in the South, we need to understand that when we engage in spiritual conversations with other people, they know who Jesus is. They know what the church is. And if they don't come to church and if they have rejected Christ, they have a reason for that. It's not that no one has ever told them. I would be shocked to find somebody who grew up in this area or who grew up in the general vicinity, who hasn't come over from another country without a Christian context, but to find someone who's from here and ask them, why is it that you don't have a faith? And for them to have never heard the story of Jesus dying on the cross before. They've heard it, which means if we know people in our life, when we encounter people in our life who are not yet believers, they have a reason for it. And often the reason is that God's children gave them a bad impression of their father. Often the reason that people are not believers is because God's children gave them a bad impression of their father. And this can happen really in two ways. It can happen in the way that you're thinking of, where someone's a hypocrite. You know, we see the pastor who preaches God's good news every Sunday, and then they have a moral failure, and they're off, and they're living some different life. Or somebody says, you know, hey, you come to my church with me on Sunday, and then during the week, they're every bit the hellier than you are, and you're like, your life looks no different than mine. How am I supposed to believe in your God? So there's hypocrisy that can often give people a bad impression of the Father, to be sure. But then it's also the church that does this sometimes. It's also the way the church talks to itself and to other people without gentleness and respect that turns people off. I think of my aunt who grew up in a very conservative Southern Baptist church where Christianity was reduced to moralism and legalism and following the rules. And we obeyed God because he's wrathful and he's sitting in heaven and he wants to get you. And in adulthood, she walked away from the faith. She rejected the version of the God that was taught there, and she should have because that's not the God that we serve. But to her, and this broke my heart when I heard her say it, early in ministry, I knew that she wasn't a believer, and so I wanted to have an honest talk with her about it. And I asked her in all sincerity, when you hear the name Jesus, what do you think? And she said, hatred. And I thought, oh my goodness, that's pretty strong. Why hatred? And she said, because that name has only ever been used to make me feel bad about who I am. It has only ever been used to heap guilt on my head. And I don't want to have anything to do with that name. God forbid anyone ever have that experience at Grace. God forbid it. And so sometimes God's children give people a bad impression of their father, not because of their hypocrisy, but because of their wrong beliefs, because of their wrong why, because of the way they carry out their faith that is in no way taught in scripture. And so we need to be prepared with our why. We need to be ready to encounter things like that when we have these conversations. And listen, we never know when these conversations are going to happen. We never have any idea when somebody in our circles, when someone who works for us or with us or one of our neighbors or somebody at the ball field will just kind of lob this question over to us. Why do you go to church? Why don't you guys do this? We invite y'all to these parties. Why don't you come to them? Why did you change those plans? Why do you do this thing? The question comes in a lot of different formats, but we need to have ears to hear it when it happens. And like I said, we never know when it's going to happen. Years ago, I had joined a men's tennis team. And I'm sitting there, my very first match. We had practice on, I don't know, Wednesdays, and then we had a match on Saturday. And so I'd gone to practice, and I'm sitting at the match, and I think I was done with my match, and I was just trying to support the team and watch the rest of the guys and eat the stale donuts and drink some Gatorade or whatever it was. And I'm just watching the match. And some dude sits next to me. His name is Brent. And Brent and I get to talking and I asked what he did and he told me and he asked what I did. And I said, well, I'm, you know, I'm one of the pastors at the church down the road. And he goes, oh, you're a pastor. I go, yeah. And he goes, all right, so tell me something. And I'm like, ah, here we go. Okay. What do you, what do you want to know, man? I said, sure, what's up? He goes, all the trains are getting off at the same station, right? Like, everybody believes something, but it's all the same. We're all climbing the same mountain, you know what I'm saying? Which is universalism. Universalism is the belief that at the end of the day, all roads, all religious roads, all spiritual paths lead to God. Even agnostics and atheists who don't believe in God or who believe in a God that doesn't care about them will one day find their way into eternal harmony with or without Jesus. And so he's asking me, you're a pastor, but like, everybody's right, right? And I'm like, yo, you just jumped in the deep end, didn't you? We couldn't start with like an easy one. Like, do we have to go to church every Sunday? Like, that's easy. Yes, of course you do. Otherwise God condemns you forever. That's not true. That's not true. Church should be vitally important to you, but anyway. You just jumped right in the deep end, didn't you, pal? I just want to know. But luckily, I had thought about that a lot. I considered it and been in conversations about it. And I had an answer worth sharing. And so I shared it. And I guess he found the answer valuable enough that he asked a lot more questions. And I spent a lot of evenings in Brent's backyard having a beer with him, answering his questions. And then his wife, Susan, was always off to the side. She would kind of know what we were talking about, but she would do her own thing. And then eventually she started to come to talk to us too until we get a year down the road. And I'm asked at that church to lead a Sunday night service that was totally independent of the Monday morning service. And so it needed its whole crew of volunteers. And Brent and Susan were the ones who volunteered to be in charge of set up and tear down for the service, to put the chairs where they needed to go and put the curtains around the chairs so it felt smaller and more intimate. Within a year's time, God used those conversations to bring them into the fold, to help them find a faith and to get them serving in the church and doing something that they would not have done a year earlier when he sat down and said, so all the trains get off at the same station, right? You never know when those conversations are going to happen. You never know when you're going to have the chance to have them. And if you're sitting here now and you're thinking, I never have those conversations. They never happened to me. Then pray that God would give you ears to hear and eyes to see. Because either one of two things is true. Either you only hang out with Christians and you need to go make some pagan friends. And I say pagan, I'm just messing around. You need to go make some friends who are really great people who don't share the faith that you have. You make some friends with them and it'll come up. Or if you have pagan friends, you're not paying attention because I promise you they've asked you some of these questions. I promise you they've opened the door for spiritual conversation for you to be able to enter it and say, with all gentleness and respect, here's why I believe what I believe. And these conversations, when we get to have them, they ripple for eternity. They have eternal impact when we get to have these conversations. There needs to be a switch that flips in your head where you go, oh, okay, Holy Spirit, all right, all right, I'm done. I'm not just casually talking anymore. I really want to be sensitive to you and what you might have me say. These conversations, when people begin to ask you, hey, why is it that you believe what you believe? And what they're really asking in our culture, as I alluded to earlier, everybody has a reason for not being a Christian if they're not. What they're really saying is, why do you still go? Why are you hanging in there? Your God lets you get cancer. Why do you still have faith in him? Your God let you endure these things. Why do you still put up with him? Church does this and this and this and it's terrible. Why do you still go to one? If you can be prepared with an answer to those questions that's substantive and good and compelling, then God can use those answers to compel them right to Jesus. He can use those answers to compel them towards the Holy Spirit, to allow the Holy Spirit to get into their life and into their heart, to do the work, to draw them into the Father. Being prepared with an answer to these questions when people ask about your faith can literally compel them into eternity if we will be humble and respectful and gentle and thoughtful as we explain to people why we have the faith that we have. But here's the other thing it does for us when we understand our why. Your why not only compels them, but it also guards you. I try to say this as often as I can so that when it happens to you, you will not be surprised, but to be a Christian is to sometimes be dismayed with Christianity. To be a Christian is to sometimes be brought to a place where you're like, why do I even believe this? Am I sure that I'm sure that I'm sure? To be a Christian is to experience God not doing something that you thought he would do, not protecting you or a family member from something that you thought he would protect you from. To be a Christian is to sit in a disappointment that you felt like God didn't come through and he did not keep his promises to you. It's to sit in the remains of kind of a broken faith and have to choose to put things back together. Or it's to be promised things in scripture to be told that it's going to be like this to be a Christian and it just doesn't feel that way as you can't seem to get any traction living the life that God wants you to live. There will be times in your Christian faith and in your Christian walk where you come to a place where you go, gosh, I'm not even really sure why I believe in this. This is really hard. Maybe I should just be done with it. This is the whole deconstruction era in our lifetime, right? I saw somebody say, a pastor recently, Tim Keller, he said, let's be honest. It may be possible that Christianity has never had a worse name than it does right now. And so when you are a Christian in the midst of a culture where our church does not have a good name, sometimes it gets challenging to cling to that faith that is derided by so many and questioned by so many. And when that questioning comes for your faith, it's going to be important to you to have an answer of why. I'm reminded of the parable that Jesus told at the end of the Sermon on the Mount about the house built on rock versus the house built on sand. He says, the foolish man builds his house on the sand, and when the rains come and the winds blow, the sand melts underneath it and the house crashes into the ocean, but the wise man builds his house on the rock, and when the rains come and the winds blow, his house stands firm. If we think about the foundation of our faith so it can weather the storms of life, certainly our why is one of the cornerstones, yes? And sometimes when the winds come and the rains blow, I've seen believers who might not have had a good why allow it to be washed away, and so their faith is with it. And so I would challenge you this morning with what is your why? Why is it that you believe what you believe? Why is it that you make the choices that you do to build your life around faith? When it comes up, what will your answer be? You don't need to be prepared to answer every question. You don't need to go home and do a deep dive into universalist theology so that you have a good answer for that. But you need to have a why that's sufficient for you. I know that for me, what I have found, this is just personal, is that the most solid whys are built first on undeniable experiences of God showing up in your life. When I think, why is it that I believe what I believe, the first place my mind goes is because it's the times when I go, well, because I saw God come through here. I saw God speak to me here. I saw God move in this thing there. I saw God, I saw God, I saw God. And so there's enough events in my life that I can point to and say, I can't deny that God exists. I can't deny God's existence because I saw him show up in myriad ways throughout my life. And then on top of that, we build the academic things. We build our understanding and our trust for scripture and our understanding and our trust of doctrine and theology and all of those things. But God shows up for us first and lets us know that he exists. And then we learn on top of that. So I would encourage you today. I told you my goal is to get you to think. If you ride home from church with someone, ask that someone, what's your why? Why do you believe what you believe? And poke them a little bit. Because they might say, well, I believe that the Bible is true. Okay. Why do you believe the Bible is true? I believe that God is real. Okay. Why do you believe that God is real? I believe that Jesus existed. All right. Why do you believe that Jesus existed? Let's sharpen one another and help prepare one another to be ready with an answer that we can share in all gentleness and humility because my prayer for you is that you will find yourself in some of these conversations and that when you do, you will remember that those conversations ripple for eternity. And it is my hope that you will be prepared with an answer and raring to go when someone opens this door in your life to have these conversations. So as you go home today, what is your why? Let's pray. Father, we love you so much. We thank you for who you are, for all that you've done. We thank you for the hope that you give us in your son. We know you bind all that hope together, God. We know that hope rests in you as well. We thank you for the spirit that convicts and leads us to that hope. Father, if there's anyone here who does not know you, I pray they would. If there's anyone here with questions, may they be bold enough to ask them. God, if there are any of us with questions about our faith, may we be courageous and diligent enough to seek out those answers. God, I pray that each of us, within the sound of my voice in this room and whoever listens to this later on, would be prepared with the reason why we cling to you. We'll be happy and eager to share with others why we cling to the hope that we find in you and why that hope brings us so much encouragement in uncertain times. God, would you give each of us the courage to seek it out and help us discover and solidify why we believe what we believe. Strengthen our faith in you, God. In Jesus' name, amen.

Well, good morning. My name is Nate. I get to be the lead pastor here. You guys say what you want about me, but I'm good at hiring worship pastors, apparently. I had no help. There was no teams or anyone else involved. It was solely my decision, and it was a good one. I'm sticking with it. No, just messing around. As we wrap that up, we're moved into a new series called the Letters of Peter. With the Lent series, there was a devotional and I heard a lot of feedback that you guys really, really enjoyed that. And I loved getting to hear from all the different voices in the church. And we will definitely find a reason to do those in the future. That's not the last time you're going to see a church devotional like that, because I really thought it was very good for us as a church. If you are looking for what to read in your quiet times, we do have a reading plan. It's available online. It's also on the information table in the lobby. If you don't know where the information table is, we have a coffee table and an information table, and I trust you to figure it out. It's a small lobby. But if you are curious about what to read, grab that reading plan and read through the letters of Peter with us. I'm excited to be in 1 and 2 Peter. I love the books of 1 and 2 Peter. Every time as a staff, we sit down to brainstorm what it is we're going to talk about and to kind of map out the series for us. This ends up on the whiteboard. Somebody will say, usually me, we could do 1 and 2 Peter, and then we write it up there, and then we have other ideas that we like, and we move on. And this time, it just hit right, man. It just felt right. It was up there on the board, and Kyle said, maybe this is the time that we're actually going to do it. And I said, you know what? Darn it, it is. I love Peter, and we're going to follow up the Lent series with these letters from Peter. So I'll say a couple things up front. We're not going to go through verse by verse or even theme by theme. There's just not enough space to do that. So I hope that you will read along with us so that you can get the full message of the letters of 1 and 2 Peter. These letters were written to the early church in the first century AD in Asia Minor. They were written to Gentile people, so they were not written to Jews. Most of the New Testament was written with kind of a mind towards Jewish thought, Jewish culture, Jewish inheritance. Peter wrote his letters to Gentiles that lived basically in modern day Turkey. And the idea with these letters is that they're meant to be circulated around the churches that are in that area. The other reason I like these letters is because they're written by Peter. And I can relate to Peter, just in overall holiness and usefulness to the church. Thank you, Harris. Peter was the dummy. Peter was one of these ready fire aim guys. He was, Peter would start running his mouth before he really even knew the end of the sentence. He just had words to say and out they came. My dad likes to say about me that Nathan, because my family calls me Nathan, Nathan having nothing to say, thus said. That's Peter. That's what Peter does. He just, he hops out of the boat and he walks on water until he sees a wave and then he sinks. He's the one that says, no, Jesus, I won't deny you. And then he does it three times. He's the one that steps up and answers all of Jesus's hard problems, hard questions. He'll take one for the team. I got this one, guys. That's Peter. He's just hard charging and he's out there. But Peter writes these letters at the end of his life. The years have softened him. They've made him wiser and more measured. And this is his message to the church. And I find great comfort in that because it gives me some optimism that maybe one day I can be a little bit more wise like Peter. Maybe one day I can quit doing dumb stuff and maybe I'll season into it like Peter did. But I love where Peter starts his letter. You would expect maybe if you thought about it, I don't know, but this is a murky time in church history. Their faith is 30 to 40 years old. We're talking about, we're talking about 60, 70, 80 AD right now as these letters are circulating. So they have this murky faith that's not based on 2000 years of good sound doctrinal biblical teaching. They don't have a canonized New Testament. They have some confusion abounds and false teachers are there kind of influencing them. And so Peter writes to this culture and these churches, and I would expect him in that context to write a book, maybe like Romans, what Paul wrote to the church in Rome, that really is the most detailed theology in the whole Bible in chapters one through eight. It's basically, here's what we believe and here's why we believe it. And then the rest of Romans is, here's what we're supposed to do in light of those truths. Or maybe Hebrews, which is just this high Christology, this high view of Jesus, of who he is and who he was and what he still does for us. Maybe I would start there, but that's not where Peter starts. Peter actually starts with suffering. It's like the first thing he addresses right out of the gates. And it's interesting to me that he would do this. And I think he does it because this is a culture, first century AD, very familiar with suffering. They knew what it was to grieve. They knew what it was to hurt. They knew what it was to lose. This is a culture and these are churches that are being actively persecuted, arrested, beaten, killed for their faith. This is a culture in which infant mortality is high and life expectancy is low. They knew what loss was. They knew what grief was. They had to walk through suffering on a regular basis as a regular part of life. And what Peter, I believe, knew and knows is that suffering can very often derail our faith. And it's why I wanted to open up the series talking about it as well. Because though I think we would admit that life in the 22nd century is markedly easier than life in the first century, we are the spoiled billionaire kids of history and the way that we get to live our life. But on the other hand, it's similar. Everybody in this room knows loss. Everybody in this room knows grief. Everybody in this room has been hurt by something that's happened in their life in a deep and profound way. Most of us know what it is to get the phone call that you or someone you love has a disease that's going to be really tough to battle. Most of us know what it is to have life not go the way we wanted or the way that we planned to sit in the midst of shattered dreams. We know what hurt is. We know what pain is. And we know that suffering has the power to dismantle our faith. We know that it has the power to tear it down. Which is why whenever I have the opportunity as your pastor to talk about suffering, as not fun as it is and as somber as it is and as serious as it is, I'm going to stop and I'm going to slow down and I'm going to talk about it with you. Because we have to do everything we can as a church and as individuals to fight against this pernicious idea that sneaks into the church over and over and over again, that somehow when I choose God, that somehow when I accept Christ, that Jesus is going to protect me from pain. Yeah, I'm going to have to go through some things. I mean, it's not all just going to be rosy. Life doesn't get to just be completely awesome all the time. There's going to be seasons of unhappiness, but the really bad stuff, God's going to protect me from that. If I follow God, he will not let anybody that I love get a disease that they don't deserve. If I follow God, everyone who dies, I'll be able to explain why they did. If I follow God, he's going to protect my children. If I follow God, he's going to bless me with children. If I follow God, he's going to protect me from failure. That idea sneaks in over and over and over again. And I think part of the reason it sneaks in is because it's so easy to preach. I would love to bring you in here and tell you, listen, the more you believe in God, the better your life's going to be. Now go live the good life. But that's crap. That's not true. And so we have to push against it every opportunity that we have. This idea that somehow my belief in God protects me from pain. So when suffering comes up in the Bible, we're going to talk about it. Because if we believe that about suffering, that my faith in God protects me from pain, then when we experience pain, we will no longer have faith in our God. Some of you have walked that road. The erroneous expectation, the misguided expectation that Jesus protects me from pain, only to find out that he doesn't. And then to reject the Jesus that was supposed to protect you, and he didn't. That failure of faith comes from understanding suffering wrongly. But I think this morning that what we'll see is if we understand suffering correctly, if we understand it biblically, if we understand it accurately, then it can be something that actually strengthens us. It can serve us. So let's look at what Peter says about suffering. Let's look at Jesus's role in that suffering. And then let's look at our responsibility in that suffering. This is just an old-fashioned work-through-the-text sermon, which they are my favorite to do, because I just stick to God's Word. Peter says this in of a loved one to persecution, Peter? Those kinds of various trials that have grieved me for a little while? Trials that grieve me for a little while are when I remember that Chick-fil-A is closed on Sundays. That grieves me for a little while, and then I go to PDQ, all right? But what he's talking about here is not that. It's deep loss. It's deep persecution. It's deep grief and deep suffering. And he says, though you endure these trials for a little while, if necessary, and not if necessary for you as if God is putting them on you, if necessary because broken things happen in a broken world, and sometimes that necessitates suffering. Paul is similarly flippant in Corinthians, where he says that we suffer from light and momentary affliction. Again, I love the flippancy with which the New Testament refers to really, really deep, hard, depression-level suffering. Light, momentary affliction. Grieved with trials for a little while. And so what we see from this attitude of Peter as he presents the topic of suffering, sandwiched with the gospel, as we'll see, is simply this truth. Suffering will happen, and we don't have to understand it. Suffering will happen. It will. No one dodges the raindrops of tragedy in their life. No one lives a full life and doesn't experience some suffering, doesn't experience or see abuse, doesn't experience or see death. I mean, right now, if you just turn on the news, you see what's going on in Ukraine and your mind is just boggled at the suffering that's happening there and the horror of the stories coming out of the towns that the Russian forces have now evacuated. And you know that once you live enough life, there's suffering that happens that you don't understand and that you can't explain. And there's this thing with suffering, with hardship, with grief and with struggle, where the very first thing we seek to do, our knee-jerk reaction is to understand it. Why would God let this happen? Why would God allow that person to die? Why would God allow that person to get this disease? Why would God allow things to not go that way? Why wouldn't God protect my family when he could? The very first thing we want in suffering is answers. Why is this allowed to happen? And sometimes, sometimes there's answers and it does make sense. Sometimes it is struggling for a little while so that you can harden your faith and so that it can be ready and seasoned. Sometimes the thing you're praying for, you're simply not ready for it yet. And if God gives it to you, you're going to mess it up. So you're waiting and you're being prepared. So sometimes when we suffer, we look back on that suffering and we go, oh yeah, okay. I understand why God allowed me to walk through that season. But sometimes suffering happens for which there is no explanation. That we cannot explain away. And this is when we need to be careful with phrases like, oh, everything happens for a reason. Does it? I've told you guys this before, but my college roommate dropped dead of a widow-maker heart attack at 30 with two kids under five years old. What was the reason for that? To make his wife's faith stronger? Get out of here. What was the reason for that? So his boys could grow up with a different dad who loves the Lord. No, my buddy was a pastor. He was one of the best people I knew. If everything happens for a reason, what's the reason for that? I was on the phone this week talking to a pastor. He's been a pastor for 40 years. He's been at one point the president of the Southern Baptist Convention. He was really great friends with my father-in-law, John. And we were just kind of chatting about it, and he calls me buddy. He said, you know, buddy, I've seen a lot of people pass away. I've seen a lot of people go too soon. But this one, losing John, that will never make sense to me. That's one that I just don't get. And it just makes me think, if there is suffering that happens, that a pastor who's been a pastor for 40 years, who's pastored thousands of people, who's done hundreds of funerals, thousands of hospital visits, he's seen all the suffering. When you're a pastor, sometimes you get a front row seat to that stuff, whether you like it or not. And he's been through it and he's looking at a death and he's going, this one, I don't get, man, there can't be any reason for this. If he can't make heads or tails of it, then what, what hope do we have to make it all make sense? And so something I want to alleve you of this morning, alleviate from you, unburden you of, is the necessity to make it all make sense. Because sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the only explanation for events, like what's happening in Ukraine, is that broken things happen in a broken world. And God in his infinite goodness and his infinite wisdom is choosing to allow those things to happen. He's choosing to allow the world to remain broken until one day he returns and he repairs it. But there's going to be suffering that happens in this life that there is no reason for. And if someone tells you everything happens for a reason, it's only because they've never experienced something that doesn't happen for a reason. And in that suffering, Peter tells us that we should rejoice. In this you rejoice, even though you're suffering. Even when we don't understand it, we should rejoice. And sometimes when we seek to understand it, we just want to make the pain go away. And we feel like if we understand it, it will make it feel better. But when I say that sometimes we just don't get to know why suffering happens, sometimes we're just not going to understand it. That's not me just being practical about things that I've seen in my life. That's actually me being biblical about God being confronted with why. We see it, to my mind, two very prominent times. Once in John chapter 11, when Jesus waits and allows Lazarus to die and then comes to raise him from the dead. And Mary, Lazarus's younger sister, runs out to meet him and he says, to meet Jesus and says, why did you wait? You could have come and you could have done something about this. And Jesus, in that moment, when we lean in and we want to understand why, why do you allow suffering? He doesn't offer an explanation. He weeps with her. He cries with her. We see it another time in Job, towards the end of the book, when Job confronts God and he's like, I need to know. I demand an answer. Why have you allowed all these things to happen to me? The worst suffering that could ever happen in the world happened to Job. And he said, why God, why did you allow this to happen? You owe me an answer. And God said to Job, and we are going to, might be uncomfortable with this. This is graduate level theology. But God said to Job, you lost your place. If I tried to understand this to you, you wouldn't get it. Tell me how I laid the foundations of the world and then I'll explain this to you. Tell me how the oceans know how far to go and no further. Tell me how souls get created. When you can grasp that, I'll tell you. So I have a belief that even though sometimes in the midst of our heart of suffering, we go, God, this doesn't make any sense. That one day when we're in eternity, if our heavenly brains have the capacity to understand and we can understand things like God does. We'll all collectively go, oh, huh. Yeah, that checks out. That makes sense. And I suspect that what we'll find in eternity is that the ones that we grieve so much for losing too early or the lucky ones? Because they got there before us. We don't have the capacity to understand all the reasons and all the suffering that happens around us. And I can't sit up here as a pastor and tell you exactly why God lets a broken world do broken things. But I know that when we get to eternity, if we have the capacity to understand it, we'll go, hmm, yeah, okay, I get it. And so in the midst of that uncertainty and in the midst of our suffering, we're grieved by various things for a little while, Peter tells us to rejoice. How is this possible and what should we rejoice? Well, it follows verses 3 day these wounds will be healed. In what do we rejoice in the midst of suffering? How do we find a way to find joy? How do we find a way to find hope? Because Easter, that's how. Because last week I told you the most important sentence in the Bible is, why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, he is risen. On that, all of history hinges. Because Jesus came to earth, because he lived a perfect life, because he died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins, because he rose again on the third day and left us with the Holy Spirit and ascended into heaven where he's prepared a place for us, where he sits at the right hand of God interceding for you, where he sends the Holy Spirit to chase after your soul and bring you near to him and bring you back to him as he prepares for the marriage supper of the lamb to call you into eternity. He bought your salvation and he's waiting for you and he invites you into that. And in that truth, you rejoice. In that reality, you rejoice. That because he rose from the dead on Easter, we know that he's gonna come back to get us in Revelation. We know that he's gonna come back and that he's gonna make all the wrong things right and the sad things untrue. We have faith that he is going to do that. And so we know that one day the wounds that we carry and the wounds that we walk in and the scars on our body emotionally and physically, that one day we will not have those anymore because Jesus has won us the next day. That one day we will not sit in that pain anymore because one day as believers, we're going to be in heaven for all of eternity where we will not need faith and we will not need hope and we will just simply sit in the joy of being in the presence of our Father and of our Savior and of the saints. We wait anxiously for that day. That's why I think if you pay attention, the most seasoned believers in the face of suffering and in the face of things that they can't explain will simply say, come Lord Jesus, just come. We don't get this stuff anymore. And so in the midst of suffering, we look to the gospel. We look to our hope. I'm fond of saying on days when I'm not feeling great, which is not awesome, or not often, because my life is awesome and my days are good. On days when I'm not feeling great, when I'm blue, or when I'm down, when I'm discouraged, when something hard is happening, I like to remind myself that not every day will feel like this day. This day is sad. That's okay. Let it be sad. But not every day is this day. Tomorrow's a new one. Maybe it'll be better. If it's not, there's a day after that. Not every day will feel like this day. And that's true in eternity too. If you're sitting in hurt and pain, if you've experienced loss, not every day feels like that day. And if there is scarring in your life that is so bad that it simmers under the surface at all times that can sometimes just jerk us right back into grief, there's coming a day when you can finally set that down and just bask in the presence of your Savior. And so we rejoice in that day and we hope for that day. And it's important to remind us that Jesus doesn't protect us from suffering. He sustains us through it. He doesn't protect us from the suffering. It's going to happen. All right, I can't reiterate that enough. There are no promises in the Christian faith that you get protected from suffering. There is a promise that you will experience it. And in the midst of experiencing it, Jesus will sustain us through it. It says in verse 5, That is us. That God himself is sustaining our faith. He's giving us the power for faith. And so he sustains us in the midst of our suffering. As we look at the gospel, we rejoice in the glorious future that awaits us. We know the people that we love that might already be there are experiencing joy and they are waiting for us too. So in the midst of suffering, we don't look to try to make sense of it here. We look to the fact that later it will not be true. That's what we rejoice in. And that's what Jesus does for us in our suffering. He wins us a future without that hurt and without those wounds. But what do we do in the midst of suffering? What do we do right now? How do we respond to it when life is really, really hard? Well, this is what Peter says we should do. Verse 7. So what do we do in the midst of suffering? What do we do when life is hard right now? How do we counsel people when they walk through suffering? We do it with this knowledge, that your faith, which guards your inheritance, becomes strengthened and results in the salvation of your soul. Your faith, which in this passage says guards your inheritance, the inheritance in verses three through five, that is imperishable, that is unfading, that is everlasting, that Jesus has prepared for you, your inheritance in glory one day. This teaches that somehow it is guarded by your very faith. That the fact that you have faith in that future protects that future. And I know that this calls into question, wait, wait, wait, so like I can lose my salvation if I don't have enough faith or I'm not secured by something besides my faith. No, no, no. God secures you. When you are saved, when you cry out to Jesus as your Savior and God as your Father, God saves you and secures you. But it is your faith that led you to that moment. Your faith is the one thing you're asked to maintain. Your belief in God is the one thing that he presses on you for your salvation. What do we have to do to be saved? We have to believe. What do we have to do to be invited into the kingdom of heaven? We have to believe that Jesus is who he says he is and that he did what he said he did. We have to have faith. But here's why God secures us. Because according to this passage, who powers our faith? God. So what do we do in the midst of suffering? We cling. We choose faith. In the midst of inevitable suffering, cling tightly to your faith and Jesus will sustain you. In a few minutes, Aaron and the band are gonna come up and they're gonna close this out with Don't Stop Believing. I'm just kidding. That would be awesome. I really wish we should have talked about that on Tuesday. But in the midst of our suffering, that's what you do. That's what you do. You don't stop believing in Jesus. You don't allow it to erode your faith. You don't allow it to steal it from you. You don't try to make sense and then argue Jesus away. You just sit in it and you know he's won me a future where one day this won't hurt like it does right now. And I'm going to cling to that future and I'm going to rejoice in that future. And in the meantime, when it's murkiest, when it's hardest, when life is darkest, I'm going to cling to faith. I'm going to cling to the faith that God empowers in me and choose to believe that Jesus is good and choose to believe in the promises of God and choose to believe that he makes graves, he makes gardens out of graves. We choose to cling to the faith when we don't know what else to do. Suffering will happen. It will. It's a promise. Because God knew that would happen, he bought our souls through his death. And he gives us an inheritance that's waiting for us. And so in the midst of that suffering, we don't say to ourselves, this must have happened for a reason. We don't say to ourselves, well, God has a plan. This has to be part of it. No. No, no. We say to ourselves, I'm going to choose to believe in the goodness of God. I'm going to choose to believe in the promises of God. I'm going to choose to believe that one day, if this could all make sense to me, it would, and I would understand it, and it would be fine, and it would be good, and it would be well with my soul, but until that day comes, I am clinging to Jesus. That's what we do in the midst of suffering. And that's how we should encourage others as we walk alongside them and their suffering. Let's pray and the band's going to come up. Father, God, first and foremost, if there is anyone in this room or anyone listening to my voice this morning or later this week who is hurting, who has suffering going on in their life that they cannot explain, that they cannot make sense of, that every explanation of it just somehow falls short. If there are people here or listening who are hurting, Father, would they cling to you? Would they wake up every day and choose faith and choose a belief in your goodness and choose a belief in your goodness. And choose a belief in your son. And in that choice, God, as your word promises, so galvanize our faith that it would be tested and true that as we walk through life many years from now, our faith is strong and our faith sustains and our faith guards. But in the midst of it, Lord, whether it's today or in the future, as we inevitably experience trials again, God, I pray that we would cling to you. It's in your son's name I pray these things. Amen.

Sometimes in life, we simply need to pause. We need to stop and sit and rest and think and reflect. In these moments of rest, often what we need most is for God to refresh us. We need Him to speak to us and breathe fresh life into us. We need for God to move and restore and encourage. This is why we observe Lent. It is a moment for us amidst all the busyness of our years to pause and focus on Jesus. Lent reminds us of what Jesus has done for us, how much he loves us and how he relentlessly pursues us. So let us together right now, be still and set our collective focus on Jesus, asking him to speak to us in this holy pause. Good morning. We'll be reading from Matthew chapter 6 this morning. This, then, is how you should pray. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we have also forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you get to be the senior pastor here. Congratulations to Tar Heel fans. Please be humble about it, lest you become unbearable to your Christian brothers and sisters. That was a heck of a game last night. Yes, yes. That's good. That was some very tepid applause there. I know you feel bigger than that, but you're being humble as we speak. We have been going through our Lent series. This is, I believe, part six of the series, and I hope that you have been keeping up with the devotionals, as I say, every week and reading and being encouraged by those and by the other folks in the church as you've gone through those. This week, we arrive at the topic of forgiveness, and we've been kind of walking through that all week. Hopefully, as you've read the devotionals, you've thought about forgiveness in your own life. I think when we arrive at the topic of forgiveness, we can't help but wonder, do we owe some forgiveness? Whenever I encounter that topic of forgiveness, whenever I see the word, whenever I'm challenged by scripture, whenever I'm talked about how God has forgiven me so I should forgive others, I immediately think, who in my life am I holding a grudge against? Who am I withholding forgiveness from? And I would bet that most of us, when we hear that idea, begin to think about who in our life have we had to forgive? Where have we had a difficult path to forgiveness? Is there anybody in my life that I need to work towards forgiving now? And so with that in mind, I wanted to kind of talk about the challenge of forgiveness and the instructions that we find in the Bible concerning forgiveness. And the best place, I think, to start is with the very words of Jesus. We're going to allow Jesus to frame up our discussion on forgiveness this morning. The Bible in the Old Testament, New Testament, all throughout it has a ton to say about forgiveness. But again, I think if we can go to Jesus and read his very words and what he has to say about it, that that's the best framework for the discussion that you and I need to have about forgiveness as we rest on that topic this morning. So I would first look at two different passages, two different things that Jesus says about forgiveness that are really in harmony with a lot of other teachings throughout scripture about forgiveness. The first is the one that Jacob just so eloquently read a few minutes ago. I don't know if you've noticed it before. Most of us know the Lord's Prayer, and you identified that as the Lord's Prayer as soon as he started to read, right? But in Matthew, when Jesus finishes the Lord's prayer, which is where Jacob was reading from, he does a little bit of commentary. He has some comments to make about it. And we read those this morning, but I'm not sure if we heard it or if you've paid attention to those before. So I would call our attention back to the way that Jesus comments on the prayer that he just prayed. Because part of that prayer is, Father, forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. At least that's how I memorized it growing up in the King's English. But sometimes forgive us and then help us forgive other people. So Jesus says this after that in verse 14, for if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your father will not forgive your sins. So this is a pretty stark and interesting teaching. And I'll be honest with you, I don't know how this works theologically necessarily and intertwines with the doctrine of salvation. I just know that when, that Jesus himself says that if we will not forgive other people, then our Father in heaven will not forgive us, which is pretty stark. That leaves us very little option, right? So forgiveness immediately we see is required. It is not optional. And then later in the passage, or later in that same book, Jesus is having a conversation with his disciple Peter. And Peter asks about this forgiveness. Surely by now Peter knows that forgiveness is not optional, that if we do not forgive other people in our life, then God does not forgive us. And that seems like a place that we don't want to be in. But Peter asks, certainly there has to be a limit to the forgiveness that we are instructed to offer to others. But to that, Jesus says this in Matthew 18, verses 21 and 22. Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times? Jesus answered, I tell you, not seven times, but 77 times. Some translations say, but 70 times seven. And see, we need to give Peter a little bit of credit. He says, Jesus, how many times should I forgive someone for sinning against me, for wronging me, for harming me? Up to seven times? Which feels very generous, if we're being honest about it. Someone slaps you in the face seven times in a row. You're just going to keep forgiving them? A business partner steals from you. Maybe you can forgive them once. You're going to, up to seven times, you're going to do that? Your neighbor backs into your mailbox. One is a whoopsie, but three, come on, man, knock it off. Like seven times is pretty generous. And Jesus says, no, no, not seven times, but up to 70 times seven, up to 77 times, which is a figurative way of saying as often as they require it. No, you forgive others as often as they require your forgiveness. And when we look at these two teachings from Jesus on forgiveness, these two statements, we have no choice but to conclude this, that unlimited forgiveness for the Christian is not optional. If you're here this morning and you wouldn't call yourself a believer, I would say that the good part of that is that you don't have to forgive anybody if you don't want to. You can just hold grudges, which may be nice. But for the believer, unlimited forgiveness is not optional. And I think that that's important to say out loud and to acknowledge. Because so often, we Christians have a habit of kind of viewing instructions that we're given as things that maybe we're supposed to do. Maybe we can try to do. Maybe one day I'll get there. Maybe one day I'll work up to forgiveness. Or we will think of it as optional. Someone hurt me. I don't want to forgive them. I don't need to. That's in the past and we've never done the work to do that. Or someone did something to us and we have every right to withhold our forgiveness from them. And so we do because it hurts so deeply. And what the Christian ethic is on this is to say, hey, we're instructed to offer unlimited forgiveness, and it is not optional. Now, to some of us, to many of us, that sounds like a challenge. That sounds difficult. If you think about some of the people who have hurt you in your life, some of the things that would require your forgiveness, to simply pithily say, well, God tells you to offer unlimited forgiveness, it's not optional. That's tough. And so I thought it best to have this conversation kind of in light of different groups of people in life that we will feel called to or pressed on to forgive. So I've got three categories of folks, three categories of situations that require forgiveness from us. And I want to talk about how we should kind of address those things because some are different than the others when we get into forgiveness. So the first and maybe the easiest category of people to forgive are those who have apologized and sought restitution. Your neighbor backs into your mailbox. They knock on your door. They say, hey, I'm so sorry. I just knocked over your mailbox. That's my bad. How can I pay for it? Okay. If you withhold forgiveness from your neighbor in that scenario, you've got issues, right? Like you've got problems. Someone stole 50 bucks from you 10 years ago. You still haven't forgiven them. Simple, everyday offenses. Your spouse said something that had a bad day. Just yesterday, I was kind of just being snippy in the morning, and Jen just looked at me. She goes, are you grumpy? Like, did you wake up grumpy? And I'm like, yeah. Sorry. I'll fix it. And, you know, thankfully, I got a little bit more chipper, but I had to apologize. Sorry. Sorry I woke up. I don't know why. I had slept eight hours. It was a great night. I had a great night last night, a good day. I don't know what my deal is, but I'll fix it, right? So there's sometimes just these run-of-the-mill things. Someone wrongs us. They apologize and seek restitution. And the right thing to do is to forgive them and move on. And if in these scenarios, you can't simply forgive them and move on, that's a you problem. You should do that. If you are holding grudges and can't just forgive people when they apologize to you, listen, I sent that email and you shouldn't have been copied on it. And I know I said those negative things about you in front of our coworkers, and I'm very sorry. and I will not do that again. Okay, that one stings a little bit, but still, you're a grown-up. Get over it. Forgive. So in these situations where someone has wronged us, but they've apologized, admitted their fault, they're seeking restitution, we should forgive. And we all know that. And the more I thought about it, the more I thought like, yeah, that's pretty easy. You're all adjusted adults. If you can't do that by now, you need a different sermon. Okay, this isn't for that. Let's just suck it up and forgive. The second one is a little bit more challenging. The second one is when we are tasked to forgive those who do not know they need to or simply refuse to apologize. That's a little bit more difficult. When someone has wronged you and they refuse to apologize for the wrong or acknowledge that it was wrong, and yet you find yourself in a position where you need to forgive them. Spouses get into a fight. They argue. They each say hurtful things. They go to their separate corners of the room, and they sit there like children with their arms folded. I mean, are you going to forgive him? I'm not going to forgive him until he says he's sorry. Okay, well, you sure are teaching him a lesson. Congratulations on being a grown-up. I always say in those situations that children are concerned with whose fault it is, and grown-ups are worried about making things right. So as adjusted adults, as people who love Jesus, we seek to make things right. Now, it's more challenging when someone has hurt you and they won't admit it. They refuse to admit that that was their fault. They refuse to admit that what they did was wrong, but we need to find it in ourselves to forgive them. It's a more difficult task, and yet we should simply extend forgiveness. Another one that I thought of this week is, you know, in this category too, is when people don't know that you even need to forgive them. When people don't know that they've hurt you. And so when you forgive them, you just forgive in silence and they'll never know that you forgave them. And I don't know if this is appropriate for me to share or not, but one of the difficult things in my position is when people choose to no longer be at grace, when people choose to move on from grace. The longer they've come to grace, the more difficult it is when they choose to leave. And I understand that we're not all going to go to the same church for our whole life. Like, I get that, and not everybody leaves poorly, and not everybody hurts when they leave, and some people leave really, really gracefully. But sometimes people leave, and as they're leaving, they say things that hurt. They say things that are insensitive to me, and they'll hurt my feelings. And I understand that I operate in a world where most of the people around me don't think I have those. But I do. I do have feelings. I don't have as much as you all. That would be rough. But I have some. And sometimes they get hurt. But they don't know that they hurt me. They don't know that that's difficult for me. They don't know that I haven't forgiven them. They don't know that I need to. And I'm not going to call them up and say, hey, you hurt me. I just want you to know you hurt me, but I forgive you, so we're good. So I just have to forgive in silence. We don't get any credit for that. But God calls us to forgive nonetheless. And in both of these situations, those where people have wronged us, they've apologized and sought restitution, and then those where people have wronged us and they don't know they have or they refuse to admit that they have, I think it's very helpful for us to refer back to Jesus' instructions and say, to the Lord's prayer, and say, Father, forgive our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Forgive us our debts. Forgive us our sins as we forgive the people who have sinned against us. It's this reciprocity. It's this awareness of the more I focus on Christ, the more I allow the reality of his forgiveness to wash over me. The more I see myself as the happy recipient, undeserving recipient of his grace and of his goodness and of his mercy and of his kindness and of his forgiveness, the easier it is for me to be a conduit of that forgiveness to others. When I reflect on what God has forgiven me of, the fact that he has forgiven me before I even know that I needed to admit fault. Before I was willing to admit that I had wronged him, God in his goodness still offers me and extends to me forgiveness as soon as I'm ready to accept it. And so particularly for these first two categories, when someone's wronged you and apologized, or when someone's wronged you and they haven't apologized yet, but it's your run-of-the-mill average amount of frustration or hurt, it helps us to reflect on Jesus and who he is and how he's loved us and how he's forgiven us and say, yeah, how could I possibly hold a grudge in light of all that love? And so in most situations where you need to offer forgiveness to someone else because they've wronged you, in a vast majority of them, 95% of situations that require our obedience, My official pastoral counsel to you would be, just suck it up and forgive them, man. Figure it out. That would be my counsel to you. Now, I might arrive there in a gentler way. I might say it like, well, you know, and we'll pray about it and wait for you to call me back and realize that's what you need to do. But at the end of the day, the advice would be just suck it up and forgive them and move on. God forgave you. You forgive other people. He empowers you to forgive. We have no right to hold grudges. We've all messed up. Let's move on. But there is a third category where I would never, never give that clumsy of advice. And it's really where I want to spend the bulk of our time today because I feel like it's probably the most helpful for us. And that's those of us who have this group of people to forgive. Those from whom you have every right to withhold your forgiveness. If there is somebody in your life who has hurt you so profoundly and so deeply that you have every right to never forgive them. No one could come to you with an argument and say, you know they deserve your forgiveness, right? Because they don't. No one could come to you and be like, you know, you just need to kind of eventually, it's been 20 years, eventually you got to figure out how to suck it up and forgive. No, no, no, you don't. No, you don't. I have a very good friend who used to be married to another really good friend of mine. Their names are Kevin and Lacey. They live in another state, so I can use their names. If you know Kevin and Lacey, just shut up about this. About seven or eight years ago, Lacey had invited me and another friend of mine, Tyler, to their house to surprise Kevin for his 40th birthday. And we went up for a couple of days to celebrate the birthday. And it was a little weird. There was a little bit of tension. But Kevin and Lacey also had an adult daughter who was engaged. And then five children aged like 10 to 12 and younger. So the oldest was like 10 or 12 and then they had four younger ones and one of those was adopted. So their life was crazy. So to go to their house and for it to feel a little bit crazy or a little bit stressful wasn't totally out of the ordinary. So I didn't really have any red flags going off. It just felt a little tense, right? So we spent a couple of days there, Tyler and I do, and then we hit the road to drive back to, at the time I lived in Atlanta, so we're driving back to Atlanta. And we get about 45 minutes away, and Lacey calls me. I answer the phone, and she said, hey, her voice was shaking. She said, hey, can you come back? I said, sure, what's up? She said, I think he did it again. Three, four years prior to that, Kevin had admitted to an affair with a friend of theirs. And, you know, we kind of all walked through that together, and they had sought restitution and made things right and worked on their marriage, and she had extended forgiveness and yada, yada, yada. But when she said, I think he did it again, I knew immediately what she meant. So we turn back around, go back to Lacey's house. She kind of explained why she thought what she thought. We get into Kevin's computer and read text messages, and she's right. It was a woman in their church small group of all things. And they had made plans in a couple of weeks to tell their families because she had three young kids too. They had made plans to tell their families and somehow existed in this fantasy world where everything was eventually going to work out okay. They just had to get over this difficult challenge at first. But Lacey had figured things out too soon. So Kevin had gone over to her house, picked her up, and they ran off together. And we didn't know where they were, and he wasn't answering his phone. But see, Kevin and Lacey only had one car and Kevin had it. And they only had one bank account and Lacey, they had one bank account and Kevin had moved everything to his business account. So she had no car, no resources and she had five kids. And I spent the next two days convincing my friend Kevin to let Lacey have a car and a couple thousand dollars. And I sat in that house as Lacey gathered up the kids with some close friends of hers and explained to them that sometimes people make poor choices and your daddy's been making poor choices. That is pain. That is hurt. That is being wronged. And I would never, never look at Lacey in those moments and say, you know that offering unlimited forgiveness is not optional, right? You're a believer. And yet that's still true. And I don't know everyone's story, but I'm confident that we have some Lacey's in this room. Some women who have been hurt in that way. Some men who have had to walk through that pain. I know in a congregation our size, we have people who grew up in abusive homes. We have people whose parents victimized them. I know that we have folks in our midst who have walked through being a victim, who have been abused by a parent or by a grandparent or by a spouse or by a partner, and your hurt is deep, and that wrong is big, and that chasm is wide. And what I wanted to know when I was looking at the topic of forgiveness is, what do we tell those folks? How do we help you, those of you with the deepest hurt and the deepest lies and the most challenging path to forgiveness, what can we offer you? So frankly, if your issue is someone hurt my feelings or someone hurt me and they apologize and they've sought restitution but I'm choosing to hold this grudge, figure it out. Figure it out. Forgive them. But for those who sit in profound hurt, what do we do? How do we even start towards forgiveness? The thing that kind of played in my head as I thought about deep hurt is kind of this question, is how could the father look at his victimized children and instruct them to forgive? How could our good heavenly father take Lacey, pull her in, hug her and hold her and tell her, you know, eventually you're going to need to let go of this. Eventually I'm going to move you to a place where I'm going to ask you to forgive Kevin. How can God do that? If we've been hurt in that way, how can we hope to do that? And listen, listen, listen. If you're like me and the path to forgiveness in your life, you're lucky, you're blessed. It's never been that difficult. When I think of, gosh, what are my challenges in forgiveness? They're not a lot. I've not had to walk the road that Lacey's had to walk. So if that's you, I would still encourage you to lean in to what we're talking about this morning. I would still encourage you to listen to what I'm about to share with you that Lacey told me this week, because you might find yourself one day in that room when your friend's life is falling apart, and you might want to counsel them well, or God forbid, you might walk through this too. And let me also say this. Last week, talked about repentance, walking away from the things in our life that don't need to be in our life and walking towards Jesus. If you are doing things that have the potential to require someone to forgive you the way that Lacey is working to forgive Kevin, please stop doing those things before they require the forgiveness that you do not want to force on anyone. But I picked up the phone this week realizing my ignorance, realizing I have not much to offer for deep hurt. And I called Lacey. And I basically asked her that question. How can the Father look at you and love you and yet still push you towards forgiveness? How have you processed forgiveness over the course of the last seven to eight years? What would you say to this topic? And it really, it kind of made me sad. I'll just be honest with you guys. We talked for about 45 minutes, and at the end of it, I realized how badly I wish that I would write sermons several weeks out because it would have been so much more beneficial to have Lacey here and to let us just have a conversation and let you guys listen to it and listen to her perspective. And I told her that. I said, I wish that we could just play this phone call for the people of grace, for the folks in the church. I wish that they could hear these come out of your mouth and not just me bloviating for 30 minutes trying to repeat what you said that was so, so great. I wish you could hear that conversation. But since you can't, I wanted to share with you some of the more helpful things that she shared with me about how she's moved through this profound season of hurt and tried to walk in obedience to offering unlimited forgiveness in the way that she is called to do. And so a couple of things that she said about forgiveness were particularly insightful. And I wanted to share those with you as well, particularly those of you who are walking through profound hurt. And you could say, I have every right to withhold forgiveness from this person. Okay, a couple things for you to know. First, that she pointed out to me, forgiveness does not require trust or affection. To forgive someone, you don't have to reinstitute them into the position that they were in. You don't have to drum up some artificial affection for this person. Lacey has forgiven the other woman, the woman that was in her small group that claimed to be her friend that Kevin left her for. She has forgiven her. She feels no affection for her and she feels no calling to do it. So if one of the things holding you back is, I don't know how I could ever like that person, I don't think you need to. Forgiveness looks like loving somebody. Biblical love, we're instructed, is that we should love others as we love ourselves. How do we love ourselves? We want what's best for ourselves. So how do we love others? To offer biblical love to someone else is to simply desire what is best for them. It is possible to desire what is best for them without actually liking them. Last night, I desired that Duke would win because it's a more interesting story. It was best for Coach K. I do not like the man. I don't have any affection for him. It was just an interesting story, right? We can want what's best for someone without having feelings of affection towards them. And if that helps you get over that hump, so that's good. We also don't have to reinstall them into trust, right? If you have a business partner who steals from you, you can forgive that business partner. You do not have to go back into business with them. If you do, the next one's on you, man. That's your bad. We do not have to reinstall trust. If someone cheats on you, you can forgive them. You do not have to go back and stay with them. So if that's helpful for you, just understand that forgiveness, as I understand it, does not require a reinstatement of trust or affection. It's simply wanting what's best for them and moving on. This one was helpful too. Forgiveness doesn't get to be an arrival. For deep, profound hurt like that, someone lied to you for years, someone hurt you in an incredible way, it doesn't get to be an arrival. Lacey told me she kept expecting to kind of cross this finish line, that she would have one day where God had worked in her heart, with through enough prayer and enough counseling and enough time and enough space that she would be able to say, okay, he's forgiven. I'm moved on. That's done. Except the ripple effects of his actions show up again and again and again in her life. The weekly task of just coordinating the kids with him, where to pick them up and where to drop them off and what are you going to pay for and what are going to pay for, and all the crap that you have to deal with when there's a divorce now, and you have to shuttle kids around, and it's just fresh aggravation every week. Right now, she's got a couple kids going into college, and she has to fill out all of that paperwork on her own, and it's difficult when there's two different parents and two different families, and she's experiencing fresh frustration at the reality of her divorce because of choices that he made and she didn't. That's fresh frustration that she has to then forgive him for again and again. One of the most profound things she ever said to me as we were kind of talking through it, and I was asking what are the hard parts, she said one of the hardest parts is watching your kids grow up alone. Because they do that thing that they do and they make you smile or they make you laugh. And you get to look over at your husband or your wife and you both acknowledge what they just did and you get to experience that intimate joy together that no one else gets to see. And now she has to do that alone. That requires fresh forgiveness. And so it made me think that maybe this is what Jesus was talking about. When he said, no, no, no, not seven times. As many times as they require it. Because maybe Jesus understands that profound hurt has ripple effects. And they show up again and again and again and again. And if you're not prepared to offer ongoing forgiveness, then you're not yet prepared for forgiveness. Because those ripples show up over and over again in your life. And so if you're facing profound hurt like that, just understand, you don't get to cross the finish line. It's more of a mindset of forgiveness. And really the thing that she said that I wanted to finish with is she said, you know, Nate, this would all be impossible without Jesus anyways. She said, I don't know how people walk through hurt like this without Jesus and then try to forgive without Jesus. He's the only reason I can even ever forgive. And she said, in this really funny way, everything that's happened has pushed me more to him, has pushed me closer ever forgive without him. And it reminded me of this verse in 1 Corinthians. And I thought, oh, how appropriate and how much sense does that make in the context of forgiveness when he says to Paul, Jesus says this to Paul, my grace is sufficient for you. My power is made perfect in your weakness. Or rather, that's God the Father saying that to Paul. We are insufficient to offer the forgiveness that we need to for some of the offenses that have been committed against us. It is only through Jesus that we are able to offer that forgiveness. His strength is made perfect in our weakness. It is only through him that we are able to forgive. So if you're one of those people who's carrying that profound hurt, just know that I don't believe you will ever find true forgiveness outside of Christ empowering you to offer it, compelling you to offer it. And when we do that, and when we allow Jesus to empower and compel us towards forgiveness, I think this really great thing happens. By empowering us to forgive, Jesus untethers us from our hurtful past. By empowering us to forgive, Jesus untethers us from our hurtful past. Lacey described it like this. She would just be going through her day, having a perfectly fine day, and then she would see something. She would see a store that Kevin liked to shop at, or a place that they used to go to, or just something that would trigger her and remind her. And then instantly, because she was holding all that hurt, and because she had not yet moved to a place of forgiveness, it was like there was this tether attached to the back of her head that would just jerk her attention into years in the past and jerk her right back into that hurt of those days following the decisions that he made. And she said it was terrible to go through days not knowing when or how my attention was going to be jerked back into the past and I was going to experience that pain fresh. And so really and truly, and we know this about grudges, and we know this about hurt, and we know this about pain, when you are walking through life carrying hurt, when you are walking through life carrying anger, when you are walking through life holding a grudge, that's not hurting them. It's not hurting them for you to be angry at them, not nearly as badly as it's hurting you. And so when Jesus empowers us to forgive, he cuts that tether and he gives us the freedom to walk forward into our future, not being constantly jerked back into our painful past. And I think that there is some freedom there. He unburdens us from the hurt and the pain that we carry every day. And he says, here, let me take that from you so that you can walk in freedom. And so I would say to you this, very carefully, very gently, if there is deep and profound pain in your life, if forgiveness for you is hard, and that person or those people have no right to ask it of you, okay. But when you're ready, Jesus offers you freedom from that hurt. When you're ready, Jesus offers to untether you from that past. When you're ready, you can move into a more free and loving future where you can't get snapped back into your pain at a moment's notice. But it requires you to forgive. It requires you to offer that. But when you do, you find a freedom in Jesus that you can't find anywhere else. I don't know how deep your hurt is, but I do know that life is better when you're not holding it. I don't know how hard forgiveness is for you, but I do know that the reason the Father would hold you and call you to him and say, you know that I'm going to ask you to forgive that person is not so that you can be morally right and morally exemplar and so that he can push you into this uncomfortable situation just so that you feel like a good human. He's telling you to do that because he loves you and he knows that freedom and love are going to be found on the other side of untethering yourself from that. He holds his victimized children and encourages them towards forgiveness precisely because he loves them and wants them to experience the freedom of life on the other side of that pain and he knows he's the only one that can make it go away. Which incidentally is why if your pain is in the first two categories, and I flippantly say, just get over it and forgive, because the same promise is extended to you, that Jesus will empower you to do it and that you will walk in love on the other side of it. So I would encourage you this morning, wherever you are on the spectrum, however you've been hurt, if it's possible to forgive, do it. Allow Jesus to empower that. If you're not there yet, if you say, I hear you, Nate. I know, I understand. Hopefully you don't disagree with what I've said. I haven't said anything clumsy. But you're simply not there yet. It's okay. Maybe just pray this prayer. And say, Father, I know you call me to forgive. I'm not ready. Will you please work in my heart so that I want to forgive? Just pray that prayer. I know I'm supposed to forgive. I don't want to. But I'm asking you and giving you permission to work in my heart to change that so that I do. And just take that step towards forgiveness. But I hope and I pray that as I pray in a second, that if there are people in your life who have hurt you, who you do need to extend forgiveness to, maybe just take a second while I'm praying right now and go ahead and offer that. And let's move out these doors free from some of the pain that we carried in with us this morning. And if you can't do that, let's take a step. Let's pray. Father, we thank you for modeling forgiveness to us. God, we know that we have offended, that we have hurt, that we have trampled with our actions, and yet you offer us unlimited forgiveness. So God, first, I pray that we would be grateful for that and overwhelmed by that. Second, Father, I pray that in turn we would offer forgiveness to others. And Lord, I pray in particular for those who have walked through deep hurt, through a hard betrayal, through abuse, through manipulation, through whatever kinds of awful things we people can do to one another. God, I pray that you would give them the courage to take a step towards forgiveness, to simply maybe even just pray that you would help their heart move, that you would soften their heart. Father, if we do offer forgiveness and obedience to your instructions, I pray that you would meet us there, that we would find you there, and that we would experience a peace there that maybe we haven't had in a long time. In the meantime, God, thank you for loving us so well. In Jesus' name, amen.
